Dobry Den, SPJST Youth Clubs! Join and Get Involved Today! SPJST is a fraternal organization
founded on the time-honored idea of doing good for each other and for the communities that we seek to serve. Our youth mission is to provide a wellrounded educational, patriotic, and social program. We also like to have fun! Through active participation in local SPJST Youth Clubs and statewide events, youngsters between the ages of five and 18 develop a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share. SPJST youth clubs also work with community-based organizations to tailor programs to fit local needs. Youth activities include summer camps and community service projects, talent contests, and other local and statewide contests. SPJST also has a great scholarship program that has helped to enable hundreds of SPJST youth to continue their higher education. SPJST also strives to instill a healthy lifestyle for children and families with programs like SPJST summer camp. Summer camp provides our members with the chance to have fun in the great outdoors and foster friendships that will last a lifetime. Creating experiences that help children develop a love of the outdoors and be physically active at the same is big part of the SPJST mission. Young people are influenced by their friends, family, media, and other information that they receive. Our District Youth Counselors and volunteer youth leaders work hard to build and maintain a fun and stimulating youth program that instills positive values in SPJST youth. By becoming involved in the youth program as an adult volunteer, you can make a positive difference in your community and in the lives of our young people. Seeing is believing. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 SPJST Youth Spectacular. You and your family can be a part of these same programs by becoming an active member of SPJST. SPJST

membership is available through the purchase of a life insurance certificate from SPJST. If you are not currently a member of SPJST and would like information about membership, SPJST life insurance, and the many benefits that SPJST has, please look on pages four and five and contact the District Youth Counselor or youth leader in your area. You may also contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and ask to speak with someone in the Youth Department. Membership in SPJST provides many opportunities for active youth club members. Even in communities that do not have an active youth club, there are ways that you can participate in our fun, service-oriented program. Those qualifications are outlined in the following summary. Please take some time to look over this information.
Whats’ an Active Youth Member? In SPJST, an active youth club
member is considered a youth with an SPJST insurance certificate that is current and who attends at least a majority of the monthly youth club meetings during the youth year. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings. Active youth members must be single and not pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). A youth with a current certificate may enter the SPJST youth program the youth year that they will be entering kindergarten. The youth will be eligible for camp and youth achievement day after the completion of their kindergarten year. The youth year begins June 1 and goes through May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.
Each district sponsors a YAD in which local lodge youth club members compete for district honors. First place district winners go on to compete at State Youth Achievement Day to be held Saturday, August 6, 2011, at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.
Who Can Enter? Active youth club members, who have completed their kindergarten year to high school senior, who attended seven out of 12 youth club meetings during the youth year and who perform constructive activities in the lodge are eligible for the YAD contests. Youth club members participating at YAD must have an SPJST life insurance certificate in force by October 31 of the previous youth year and must have attended at least seven meetings since the application was written. Youth in lodges where there are no youth clubs can enter the YAD contest if they attend seven out of 12 adult meetings. Youth leaders will verify eligibility of each contestant selected to complete in District YAD. All YAD contestants must be single and not pregnant or a parent.

How Do You Enter? A YAD contestant must pre-register for all contests by completing a separate YAD entry card for each contest to be entered. YAD entry cards are available from the youth leader, DYC, or State Youth Director.
SPJST Summer Camp and Participation Guidelines The SPJST provides summer camping for its youth members. Youth camp funds come from an annual allocation by the SPJST Supreme Lodge. Each of the seven SPJST districts across the state hosts its own camp. Some districts may have combined camp sessions.
Who Can Participate? Camp is provided on the basis of participation in SPJST activities. Pending that the qualifications are met, summer camp is available to all SPJST certificate-holding youth members. Campers must also be in good standing with SPJST. The ages for camp are post kindergarten to high school senior as of June 1 of the camping year. Graduating high school seniors who are active youth club members may attend camp as a Senior Leader-in-Training (LIT) during the camp session that follows their high school graduation.
Eligibility Qualifications for youth to attend SPJST camp are based on the previous youth year (June 1 to May 31). To be eligible to attend camp at no charge, youth members must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings or seven out of 12 adult lodge meetings, if the lodge does not have a youth club. Youth
members must also attend a majority of the youth activities in the youth club or lodge. Any youth (previous member or new certificate) who initially joins the youth club by October 31 and attends seven meetings may go to camp free of charge. A member initially joining the youth club who is not able to make seven meetings may still go to camp for a fee determined by his/her district’s DYC. SPJST youth members who do not meet the above qualifications may attend camp for a fee determined by the DYC and must have the certificate in force by May 1. These funds will be submitted to the State Youth Director. The youth leader will report all youth who qualify and intend to attend camp to the DYC no later than May 15 on an Eligibility Qualification form available from the State Youth Director. The DYC must send a copy of his/her district’s qualification forms to the SYD on May 15 for eligibility verification. In cases where there is no youth club, two officers of the lodge may submit the form. All youth who will be going to camp must have their name on the submitted eligibility qualification form by May 15. No one can be added to the eligibility qualification roster after May 15. Each camper must submit a completed SPJST Camp Application to his/her DYC no later than 20 days before camp. These applications are available from the local lodge youth leader, DYC, or State Youth Director. All incomplete camp applications will be returned to the youth. No one may attend SPJST Camp without a completed SPJST Eligibility Application on file for the current year. If a youth submits an application
but is not eligible to attend according to the youth leader’s qualification form, the DYC will contact the leader about the matter. All eligible and qualified SPJST youth are entitled to attend camp with expenses paid in equal proportion from the district’s annual camp fund. If camping facilities are limited and elimination is inevitable, the seniority of youth club members will have first consideration. The DYC will notify all leaders at least 15 days before camp what extra costs to expect per camper. 2011 SPJST Scholarship Program and Qualifications SPJST recognizes and awards its members for academic excellence, exceptional leadership ability, and outstanding service with its scholarship and leadership grant program. This past spring, the SPJST Home Office awarded 53 $1,000 scholarships to deserving SPJST youth. Another nine scholarships were presented at State Youth Achievement Day in August. SPJST awards the following scholarships and leadership grants:
General Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 Leadership Grants in the amount of $1,000 State Merit Grant in the amount of $1,500 District Merit Grants in the amount of $1,000 Royalty Grants in the amount of $1,500
Any youth member who has been the recipient of either the State Merit Grant, the District Merit Grant, or the Royalty Grant is also eligible to apply
VӖSTNÍK
for a General Scholarship or a Leadership Grant. A youth may receive a maximum of two scholarships/grants within SPJST, excluding the State Merit Grant. General scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members. Leadership grants are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge. To be eligible, applicants must: • Have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for one year. • Hold an active SPJST life insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship or grant; and • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
General scholarship recipients may only receive one general scholarship. Active youth club members are required to apply for both the general scholarship and the leadership grant; however, they are only eligible to receive one. You may request scholarship application guidelines through the Office of the President during the fall of the year. All required application materials must be returned to the SPJST Scholarship Department by February 1. Please note that this information is subject to change. All applicants are encouraged to please refer to the Office of the President for the most complete and update information regarding the SPJST Scholarship application process. Complete application and guidelines may be obtained through the President’s Office. —SPJST—

SPJST Youth Showcase Talents at State Youth Achievement Day
pproximately 250 SPJST youth from across Texas met at Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 7 to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2010 competition involved participants ages six to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods, handicraft, photography, sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is always a surprise until the day of the competition. Participants were each given as assortment of various craft items and instructed to create something that incorporates SPJST. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualify to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Taylor, Arlington, Hawley, Houston, Blessing, and Floresville.

State Merit Grant Essay: SPJST Youth—Czech Us Out Dobry den – it’s a Czech phrase
that friends use to tell each other “Hello” or “Good day.” When it’s written alongside SPJST Spirit 2010, it takes on an even deeper meaning. Dobry den captures the spirit of SPJST this year not only as an optimistic Czech phrase, but as a greeting to the opportunity we discover every day when we find new ways of doing good for one another. It’s a greeting to the days full of good things happening now, as well as the days full of growth and fraternalism we plan for in the years to come. One example of how SPJST is bringing its members into the future is the construction of a brand new summer campsite. In the past, campers and youth coordinators have had to deal with camps with dirty cabins, high prices, and uncooperative owners. Thanks to SPJST spearheading a project called the Education and Nature Center (or ENC), members of every SPJST youth club will now have a quality camp to call home. This year, everyone attending camp can look forward to a variety of fun, new activities, including waterskiing on a lake, hiking through nature trails, and tackling the largest high ropes element in the state of Texas. The camp will also create new volunteering and job opportunities. The ENC has been

a huge project for SPJST to plan and follow through on, but when Supreme Lodge officers and employees of the company had the idea for the camp, they knew the end result would be well worth it. The camp isn’t only for SPJST members, either. Its purpose is to teach nature education and conservation, and it is available for family, religious, and civic retreats. With all that in mind, it’s easy to see why our SPJST camp tee-shirts this year say “Dobry Den – SPJST Spirit 2010.” The ENC is a new facet in what makes up the spirit of SPJST. It is a reason for campers to excitedly greet future camp experiences. It is one of many ways SPJST is spreading fraternalism to different groups of people and equipping its young members for the future with experiences that will last a lifetime. SPJST also teaches its youth club members how important it is to reach out to the community. The adult members of SPJST teach this lesson by example, especially through their recent work with the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. When a tragic shooting occurred on November 5, 2009, in Fort Hood, Texas, memorial services were held to honor the people who were injured or killed. However, SPJST members knew that something must be done to establish a permanent

Keeping the Spirit of SPJST Alive!
Royalty Speech By 2010-2011 State King Samuel Vanicek
Dobre odpoledne. Good afternoon, distinguished judges, family and friends. SPJST. Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. It is culture. It is heritage. Above all, it is men, women, boys, and girls sharing a common bond. We are the spirit that distinguishes the SPJST from being a commercial business. Instead, the SPJST is a fraternal benefit society. We work together, as a team. Through this relationship, we are rewarded with stronger communities, families, and friendships. We become part of a team that depends on each one of us contributing what he or she can. That is why our spirit is so important. Our efforts have accounted for countless donations to numerous causes, a youth program that provides young people with a safe social environment, and a variety of activities that allow for bonding between family, friends, and the community. SPJST is us, the members, combined with our actions. We control the SPJST; each member has the

include peaceful places for reflection and a limestone pavilion with 13 columns honoring the 13 victims of the shooting. According to the SPJST website, fundraisers for the project have already brought in more than $60,000 in donations and pledges. The Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden represents an important ingredient in the spirit of SPJST. It is an example of how members of SPJST respond to the community in difficult times. It is a testimony of how bringing people together to honor our loved ones can create something beautiful. As a lifelong member of SPJST, I know that this is an organization that doesn’t just sit back and watch things happen. It thrives because its members are willing to work hard. In addition to state and nationwide projects
power to make an impact. This means that, in order to keep the spirit of SPJST alive, we must respect each other and practice the golden rule. It is important that we treat others as we would have them treat us. This nurtures fraternalism. It keeps the spirit of SPJST alive and thriving in projects like the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden, the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, and the new SPJST Education and Nature Center. These projects were possible through efforts of spirited members. They initiated, developed, and currently maintain these statewide projects along with other efforts in their local lodges. Our spirit breathes life into SPJST. The SPJST helps us members in various ways and we members, in return, help the company. All for one and one for all. Our spirit to help and give back is vital to the company’s survival. It is up to each one of us to keep the spirit of SPJST alive. Dekuji. Thank you. —SPJST—
like the ENC and the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden, hundreds of local lodges work throughout the year to provide activities for members of all ages. During my last few years in the youth club, I participated in one of my district’s Ceska Beseda dance circles. I learned this traditional Czech dance with seven of my peers in the youth club, and we traveled to different towns in Texas performing the dance. It was a rewarding experience in which we all dressed in Czech costumes and strengthened our friendships as members of the same circle. The opportunity for all of us to become closer in this way was made possible thanks to our district youth counselor, who worked hard to make sure we practiced and had crowds to perform for. Along with entertaining audiences, I have served my community through my youth club by participating in Join Hands Day. SPJST encourages youth

Dobry den, distinguished judges, family, and friends. It was our own Czech ancestors who started this thriving, benevolent society 113 years ago. They wanted a place of their own, a place to have a good time, and a place to protect their people. The spirit they created has been passed down all these years, and I keep it alive even today. The spirit, the fire, of the SPJST I relate to a Czech favorite—kolache dough. Certain ingredients are crucial to make dough rise. The same is relevant to keeping the spirit alive. First and foremost, tradition: what has been passed down and the SPJST’s mighty legacy. When I was little, I learned that the “SPJST” on the back of my grandparent’s dominoes stood for “Special People Jesus Sent To Texas.” Just one thing I grew up learning that had such an impact. My grandparents are avid players, and I join them for a game on frequent occasions. Our lodges hold domino tournaments and dances. My family has been going to dance at the SP for generations. While baking kolaches with my grandmother, she tells me stories about SPJST and what it’s meant to her. Tradition and what I’ve learned from it is the biggest and perhaps most abundant ingredient to the
clubs to work with their adult lodges on this day each year by volunteering together to better the lives of others. One year, our lodge collected canned goods and made casserole dishes to donate to local charities and a maternity shelter. Later, we received letters from the shelters expressing their gratitude. By participating in Join Hands Day, SPJST stresses the importance of volunteerism to young members as well as adults. Another event that I feel captures the spirit of SPJST and says “Dobry den!” to the community is the presence of the SPJST Float in parades across the state. I am happy to say that I have been a part of this exhibition by walking alongside the float and carrying its banner. The float displays bright, patriotic colors of red, white
spirit—the flour to the dough. Participation in various events with my youth group keeps things interesting and fun while promoting the ideals of SPJST. On Join Hands Day, we help clean up our lodge grounds to make it look beautiful while promoting the environment. We host bake sales to raise money for our funds to go places together. Participation is the yeast in the dough. It reacts with the flour and rises. In everything we do, in everywhere we go, we represent SPJST and everything it stands for. The last ingredient to the recipe of keeping the spirit alive is delight, having a good time. Like the water that mixes all the ingredients together, enjoying what I do within SPJST is equally important. Easy enough, it goes “hand in hand” with both learning about the past and participating now, and in the future. The people I meet through this great organization are like the fillings in the kolaches: different from one another, but I haven’t found a flavor I don’t like yet! The great people and opportunities that arise from SPJST have molded me into a great leader and person, and help keep the flame of SPJST burning! God bless! —SPJST—
and blue and proudly shows off the SPJST State King and Queen as well as local members. It really makes a statement and shows bystanders that we are proud of our organization. SPJST was founded upon the spirit of doing good for one another. With a new camp and nationally recognized memorial spearheaded by SPJST becoming reality, along with lodges across the state volunteering and serving local communities throughout the year, the spirit of the organization is alive now more than ever. “Dobry den” captures the spirit of SPJST because members welcome the challenges of today as we set our sights high for a bright and brilliant future. Dobry den to fraternalism in 2010. —SPJST—

SPJST Youth Beseda Dance Groups Participate at State YAD
The Beseda is a Czech folk
dance that has been around for many generations. SPJST Youth Clubs perform the dance at events across Texas. Seven groups exhibited the dance at the 2010 State Youth Achievement Day on August 7 in Temple.
The Beseda— A Czech Tradition from www.praguekolachefestival.com The history of the beseda began back in ancient history. A number of small tribes settled in the central part of Europe and gradually grew into a group of small states, commonly known as Central European States in early history. The Central European States were surrounded by savage warlike tribes, and they had to band together for mutual protection. Their languages became similar over the years and first one state then another became dominant. Because of the raiding and pillaging by the fierce warriors of the stronger tribes, the Cen-
tral Europeans settled in small villages and towns for protection. They went from there straight out to their farms and jobs. They soon found that they couldn’t fight the stronger warriors and learned to outwit and outmaneuver them. When the people went away to war, the children were left with the old people of the village. To keep the children entertained, the grandparents told them folk
tales of their ancestors and the heroes of the region. Those tales and old love stories and other tales became folk songs and folk dances. The word beseda, to us, means company or visitors. When they got together, they danced their favorite company dances or beseda. Later the state leaders chose some of the most popular besedas and combined them to make a national dance for the big state and national
celebrations. There are many variations of the beseda, and the costumes — kroje — as they came from different sections of the country. After World War I, the area was renamed Czechoslovakia. Here in America, we dance many folk dances brought from Europe like the Highland Fling from Scotland and the Irish jibs and reels. (In SPJST,) we also dance the Beseda to try to preserve it and some of the customs and traditions that have been passed down through the years by the people who originated in Central Europe. Each of the eight parts of the Beseda tells a separate story—a throwback to the origin of the dance. The first part tells of a group of young people who are out having fun and the girls decide to look around to see if they can find new partners who are more to their liking. The second part is part of the old game and so on, each part telling something about the early days. —SPJST—

District Two Youth Achievement Day Saturday, July 10, 2010 - Lodge 29, Taylor
Thank you to all youth members who participated in District Two Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Lodge 29, Taylor. Guests, you were a tremendous audience. Thank you to all who came and supported our youth. Thank you to Lodge 29 for your kind hospitality. We appreciate the many ways you made this day run so smooth and enjoyable for all of us. This year, once again, we topped the 300 mark for entries. It was great to see so many participants. There were many countless hours of preparations for each entry, whether it be crafts, posters, scrapbooks, talent, royalty, or beseda. I must say these youth are very dedicated as are their leaders and parents. I thank each of you for your involvement in SPJST Youth Program. District Two Flag Bearers Kayla Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville and Justin Kraatz of Lodge 47, Seaton presented the flags. Our 2008-2009 District Two Queen Amber Penn of Lodge 24, Cyclone sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” Thank you, Amber, for sharing your most beautiful voice. Introductions included Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife Ruth Ann, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny and husband David Nauert, State FAC Chester Jenke and wife Colleen, District Two President Ray Nelson and wife Joyce,
District Two Royalty participants. Front, left to right, duchesses Shelby Horak (80), Kayla Wuensche (48), Ramsey Washam (20), and Chandee Bachmeyer (29), dukes Ty Stock (24), Koby Stone (47), Trent Wuensche (48), and duchess Stephanie Sanders (47). BACK: Queens Nichole Festa (80), Alyssa Torres (48), Elizabeth Tischler (20), and Jacqueline Klaus (29); kings Samuel Vanicek (24), Chris Zavodny (47), and Connor Vanecek (48); and queen Candace Stone (47).
and Lodge 29 member Jesse Pospisil giving a warm welcome to all. I was honored to introduce our masters of ceremonies for the afternoon— graduating senior Miss Stephanie Vanicek of Lodge 24, Cyclone and incoming senior Mr. Neil Rabroker of Lodge 47, Seaton. It is wonderful when our youth take the spotlight to be in charge of such an important part of the program. Thank you both for such a job well done. Five beautiful young ladies and three handsome young men took the stage to share with the audience and judges what “Keeping The Spirit of
SPJST Alive” means to them. Prior to their speeches, each contestant drew a question to answer that was judged. Each contestant’s response was so well answered, and each one presented themselves and their speeches so well. I am so proud of each of you. Congratulations to 2010-2011 District King Samuel Vanicek and Duke Ty Stock, both of Lodge 24, Cyclone, and
2010-2011 District Queen Jaqueline Klaus and Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer, both of Lodge 29, Taylor. Runners-up were Chris Zavodny of Lodge 47, Seaton and Elizabeth Tischler of Lodge 20, Granger. I want to thank our 2009-2010 District Two King Samuel Vanicek and Duke Ty Stock, both of Lodge 24, Cyclone, and Queen Nichole Festa and Duchess Shelby Horak, both of Lodge 80, Holland. Your representation of District Two was fantastic, especially at the Temple Christmas parade braving the cold rain. Crafts, individual and group talents along with the two groups of beseda were great. What talent you all have! All participants – whether you took home a ribbon or not, remember, in my book, all District Two youth are winners. I am so proud of each of you! You make so many people proud of you, your parents, family, and friends. You deserve to give yourself a pat on your back. Thank you to everyone who made this day possible. You are an awesome group of people. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

District Three Youth Achievement Day
Sunday, June 27, 2010 - SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington
Dobry den, and we are having a good day from District Three! We held Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on June 27, 2010, at Lodge 183, Arlington. Many thanks to the youth leaders and members of Lodge 183 for a well organized day for our youth. They served us a great continental breakfast to help us all get started for the day. When registration was complete and all craft items were turned over to the judges to make that hard choice of which one will make it to the final stage, a fabulous homecooked meal was served. We are very proud of our youth turning in eight more entries than last year, which added up to 358 entries. Many thanks to parents who guided and helped pushed the children to start and complete their projects. This year, our children are getting even more crafty with the nine craft categories. The posters and scrapbooks were very creative with our theme
of “Czech Us Out in 2009-2010. This year’s talent was very competitive. And, you should have been there for the group numbers! They are getting harder and harder to judge each year. Congratulations, also, to our merit point winners. District Three Top Junior of the Year is Melinda McClellan of Lodge 84, Dallas, and District Three Top Teen of the Year is Anna Dulock of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Many of our first place winners who went to State Youth Achievement Day that was held in Temple on August 7 brought home state medals. Congratulations to all, and just remember, everyone is a winner at District Three Youth Achievement Day. This is why you need to come Czech us out anytime! District Three Merit Grant winner is Tommy Weeks of Lodge 183, Arlington. To receive this award, Tommy earned the highest merit points in our district. He was then asked to write an essay that determined the top state winner. Other than attending his local meetings, Tommy also participates in many things that the SPJST Youth Programs offers. He participates in Dis-
trict Youth Achievement Day, district summer camp, state Leaders-inTraining workshop, State Youth Achievement Day, Join Hands Day, Flag Day essay contest, Make A Difference Day, and donates to the 100 Pennies Scholar- Tommy Weeks ship Fund Drive. He also attends his district meetings and participates in all the contests we have such as Christmas ornament, kraslice (Easter egg) decorating, and camp tee-shirt design, and completes Vestnik projects and contests in our weekly newspaper. He has held many officer positions in his own lodge as well as our district. Tommy is so deserving of this award, and we are very proud of his accomplishments that he has achieved within our organization. I would also like to give special recognition to our District Three Royalty who participated at State YAD. District Three King for 2010-2011 is Tommy Weeks. Tommy is the 16-yearold son of Tom and Kay Weeks. He is a member of Lodge 183, Arlington where he has served as treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, and vice president and has assisted on the scrapbook and poster committees. Tommy is a junior at Martin High School where he plays in band and is on the soccer team. His honors include Principal’s Award, honor roll, Spanish Honor Society, and Band Squad Leader. Tommy enjoys band, soccer, video games, and watching television. He plans to attend col-
lege and have a successful career. Tommy’s duke is Levi Adamek. Levi is 11 years old and the son of Randy Adamek. He is a member of Lodge 183, Arlington. Levi is in fifth grade at Sam Houston Elementary School. The 2010-2011 District Three Queen is Katie Weeks. Katie is the 16-year-old daughter of Tom and Kay Weeks. She is a member of Lodge 183, Arlington where she has served as president, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, and vice president and has assisted with the scrapbook, poster, and sunshine committees. Katie is a junior at Martin High School and is involved in band and soccer. She also plays on a club soccer team and participates in her church youth group. Her honors include Principal’s Award and Trumpet Leadership Award. Katie’s future plan is to graduate from college and be successful. Katie’s duchess is Brittney Higgins. Brittney is eight years old and the daughter of Eddie Higgins. She is a member of Lodge 183, Arlington. Brittney is in third grade at Dunn Elementary School. With our theme being Dobry Den, which in Czech means “good day,” I would like to shine some sun rays about our district. We, over the past decade
have increased our volunteerism and service projects. All of our energy is helping others and our community in which we believe and trusting our ability to make this world a better place. In SPJST, we believe in our tradition of helping families and others which is a great promise for our future fraternalism, by teaching our younger generations the motto, and I quote the youth motto, “I pledge my support to uphold the high ideals of the SPJST: Seeking brotherhood; Pledging benevolence; Joining hands; Supporting humanity; Trusting in my ability to make this world a better place. This I pledge.” By teaching this to our youth in the generations to come, I hope I have mentored the generations of children from the past to carry on this tradition. Thank you again for a wonderful, memorable year that I have added to my 58 years of service. Fraternally yours, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST—
District Three: Leaders-In-Training Great Help at Youth Activities
In District Three, active high school youth club members have the opportunity to attend the Leader-in-Training workshop that the state youth department sponsors. It is usually the first weekend in June. This year, the LIT workshop was June 11 to 13 at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm. Those youth who attend this workshop assist their district youth counselors during their summer camping session. This also allows them to help their own youth leader throughout the year. Sometimes working with a lot of younger members can be too much on one person, and this extra helping hand is just so appreciated by the youth
leader and or youth counselor. LITs are usually the most influential youth that the younger members look up to in his/her club. LITs learn positions of leadership and responsibility and share their creative skills and talents.
At this workshop, they learn the keys to successful teamwork, problem-
solving, and guidance to a positive influence to the younger members. District Youth Counselors (DYCs) can put trust into these candidates to help them all throughout the year, and it is always a great helping hand in all events the district sponsors. In 2010, District Three had 19 teens attending the workshop. We were very proud of the large attendance and grateful to know that we will have several helping hands at camp and all throughout the year! Fraternally, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST—

District Seven Youth Achievement Day was hosted by Lodge 107, Floresville and was held at the lodge hall on Sunday, June 27, 2010. We had a nice turnout with around 200 craft and talent entries. We started the busy day with registration. Thanks to all of the adults for their help with registration and setting up the crafts. Thanks to former State Youth Director John Hoelscher and Assistant District Youth Counselors Regina House and Belenda Barta for
checking the crafts to make sure everyone followed the rules. Thank you to Val Barta for taking care of participation awards and to Donnie Howard for serving as our master of ceremonies. District One Camp
July 23 to 25, 2010 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas
District One attended summer camp
Friday, July 23 to Saturday, July 25, 2010 at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas. There were 116 total campers this year! We arrived to beautiful Cooper Farm on Friday, July 23 at 9 a.m. Everyone was greeted by the wonderful staff then taken to their cabins to get settled in. After lunch, the younger campers went swimming, and the older campers spent the afternoon at Fayette County Lake tubing and boat riding. Friday evening after supper, we had a dance. Everyone had a great time, and danced the night away. Thanks to Bill Orsak and Josef Orsak (Chattin’ Charlie) for providing the great music. Saturday, July 24 was filled with activities. The younger campers enjoyed the ropes course. WOW . . . the elements are fantastic! The zip-line was a big hit. They also went to Fayette County Lake that afternoon and enjoyed all the water activities. The older campers enjoyed archery, rifles, and pond activities, as well as swimming. Saturday afternoon, a horseshoe tournament was held, and the younger campers watched a movie which was a nice break from the heat.
Sunday, July 25 was a little more of a relaxed day. The younger campers enjoyed pond activities, archery, and the rifle range. The older campers had fun on the ropes course. The ‘swing’ was awesome! Ms. Susan even braved the element after much encouragement, hesitation, and a lot of praying. All the campers enjoyed seeing her ‘swing’ from the ropes course. Sunday afternoon, parents were invited to closing ceremonies and to enjoy a barbecue meal with all the trimmings provided by District One Director. Thanks to Donnie and Janice
Victorick for providing the meal. It was delicious! First-time camper and chaperone initiation was very interesting and exciting this year. First-time campers and chaperones had to eat chocolate drenched donuts on a string held over their heads and without using their hands. To say the least, things got a bit messy. Everyone was a good sport. Welcome, new campers and chaperones. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s camp a huge success. Thank you, Mrs. Susan Skrabanek, for all of your hard work and dedication
to District One and Cooper Farm. Thank you, Mrs. Ann Schoeneman and Mrs. Sharon Russell for everything you did. Thank you, Donnie and Janice Victorick, for the cookies and sodas you provided for all the campers and chaperones to enjoy on Saturday. We look forward to the refreshments every year. Also, thank you for providing the delicious barbecue meal on the last day. Our camp cooks were the best. A big thank you goes out to James Faust, Buddy Shelfer, and Randy Gaas for preparing the meals. Thank you to Betty Suehs for providing us with a spaghetti meal. Everyone enjoyed a taste of your homemade cooking and the delicious banana pudding. Thank you, Sue David, for helping with duties as camp nurse. Chaperones and leaders, we could not have done it without you. Thanks for all you did to make camp a success this year. All in all, this was a great camp. Fun was had by all, and we can’t wait until next year for an even better camp! Fraternally, Holly Narro District One Assistant Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Districts Two and Four Camp
July 30 to August 1, 2010 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas
What a wonderful camping experi-
ence for District Two which was joined by District Four from Friday, July 30 to Monday, August 1, 2010. We began our tour of adventure on Friday, July 30 at the new at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas. Attending were 92 District Two campers along with 22 staff and chaperones. Attendance was more than we have had in several years. Many of our campers and chaperones were new and experiencing what SPJST camp is all about. In the end, I feel all are ready for 2011. We began camp with a presentation to former SPJST State Youth Director/ENC Camp Director John Hoelscher. John and his family were presented a wooden glider for their newly finished home. It included an engraved plaque — “To SYD John Hoelscher and Family With Love, District Two Youth and Leaders”. May you enjoy, just a glidin’ on the cool summer nights. What a camp—everything you
could ever imagine! We began with a fun ol’ hayride. Everyone really enjoyed it. Swimming and horseshoes were familiar activities for many with each being so much better than in the past. An activity we have not had in a couple of years was the ropes course. The low ropes was so challenging for the group activity. Many learned that teamwork is essential to complete challenges. It was great to see each group working together to complete the tasks. The high ropes course was a dare to challenge for many. I was so proud to see so many trying the challenges and the many who completed them. I know campers will be more apt to try again next year knowing that if I can do the zip-line, anyone can do it. It was great. The pond was a great place to cool off with a variety of different activities including swimming, canoeing, paddle boating, fishing, jumping on the water trampoline, and if you were more adventurous, jumping onto the blob.
Many used their skills at the rifle range and shooting bows and arrows. For those who had not experienced either, they left as pros. The most fun voted was the journey in the big yellow bus to the lake. The younger groups enjoyed the traditional shaving cream fight. It seemed as if the campers were putting on a performance for everyone in sight. Not knowing the identity of anyone, the lake was the best place to share their identity along with the sharing of the shaving cream with onlookers once the lake was covered white as snow. The boating was fun. Those who rode the water tube and the banana boat were in for a blast. I must say the tube was an awesome ride. Just ask new Lodge 87, Temple Youth Leader Jennifer Davidson. At one time, she even took a swim in the lake. John and Lisa, your boat driving was excellent and thrilling. Thank you! Once again, campers were delighted to join in on Janet’s most famous scav-
enger hunt. There were groups racing in all directions to find the clues which she and Carol had hidden so well. From the pavilion to the pond then to the ropes course and all over the campgrounds, you could see the eagerness of all to make it back to the dining hall with all clues in tact. When Ty was asked at State YAD “What was the most fun at camp?” he stated that it was the scavenger hunt. Could it be that Ty’s group won? By the way Ty, you made Janet tear up. With so many new campers and chaperones, camp would not have been complete without initiation. With all the new first-year campers and chaperone stars, the popular show, “Minute to Win It” was brought to Cooper Farm. Some laughed so hard, they could not finish their task. Some were determined to make it in 58 seconds. Others embarrassed themselves, and others needed to go on the show with their expertise. It was fantastic! Not all new campers got to take the challenge, but

next year is another year. I can’t promise it will be so easy — or could it be more embarrassing? Stay tuned for next year—especially you chaperones. You will not be forgotten. After initiation, everyone enjoyed swimming, basketball, and s’mores. Games ended the night for the younger groups. Then, the teens enjoyed a night of singing and dancing. I must say I am so proud of each of our teens. By the end of the night, every teen was dancing. I am so proud of you. There were many new friendships made that evening. It was great to see the bond that was made between the entire group. Thank you for your participation. On Sunday morning, to show appreciation to our 16 LITs for a job well done, John and Lisa took them to the lake for another round of tubing. I understand, they had a great time. Thank you, LITs for being the best — Brandon Bowen of Lodge 18, Elgin; Elizabeth Tischler of Lodge 20, Granger; Sam Vanicek and Stephanie Vanicek, both of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Najatt Mohad and Jackie Klaus, both of

Camp ended with all parents, grandparents, and friends enjoying a tour of the campgrounds by their campers. All adults were so impressed that I don’t think I will have a problem needing chaperones next year. From the sounds of it, there may be one chaperone per camper! There were many tears as we said our goodbyes. The good thing about our camping date is that we would see all our friends the following weekend at State YAD. Thank you to Becky Zavodny of Lodge 47, Seaton for keeping everyone safe and healthy. We appreciate your tender care. Of course, camp would not be possible without the great chaperones to keep the campers in line. I do appreci-
ate your time and care to these campers. I do believe the chaperones have as much fun as the campers. I know I sure do. My hats off to you: Kim Campbell of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Tammy Pechal, David Koslovsky, Rodney Posvar, Lynette Talasek, Michelle Porubsky, Joyce Kraatz, and Missy Wilson, all of Lodge 47, Seaton; Linda and John Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville; Frank Horak and Christine and Terry Festa, all of Lodge 80, Holland; Jennifer and Lucas Davidson of Lodge 87, Temple; and Carlos and Jessica Fernandez of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. To SPJST and the ENC board, we thank you for all you have done to make such a beautiful, and safe camping facility for our youth. We thank everyone who has supported the ENC. I truly do believe that the 2010 camping experience these campers had this year will be a lifetime memory. Would Cooper Farm be with us today with the success it is without former SPJST State Youth Director John Hoelscher? We all know the answer no. John, we thank you and your fam-
ily for all the hard work, sacrifices, and dedication you have done to make an SPJST dream a reality. We all had a fantastic time at camp this year, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We appreciate your involvement not only as being the camp director, but your interaction with all the campers and chaperones. We will miss you as our State Youth Director, but you will always be a part of all our lives with many, many fun memories. I remember you telling me years ago back at Camp Val Verde how you would love to run a camp. Well, John, my former youth member, you have accomplished a goal and dream you set years ago. You are now the Cooper Farm Camp Director, and I could not be more proud of you. You are a true example of reaching the stars. District Two wishes you, Lisa, Michael, Emma, and Abby the best at Cooper Farm. We can hardly wait until SPJST Camp 2011. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

District Two Recaps 2009 - 2010 Fun-Filled Youth Year
District Two youth members have had a wonderful and exciting time since the last Youth Spectacular was published in 2009. It has been a year of many fun-filled activities, new friendships, and lasting memories. We thank SPJST members for giving us these opportunities. I thank the youth leaders for their countless hours in preparing and planning. To the parents, we thank you for all your support and getting the youth to the meetings, practices, and activities. We hope you have also had as much fun as we have had this past year. September 2009 The annual District Two Fall Meeting held at Lodge 47, Seaton was very well attended by our youth. Many different games and fun prizes were enjoyed by all. There was great participation in the Christmas ornament design contest.
October With our annual district trip being held in August last year, October was a rather slow month for District Two. I was honored to be invited by Seaton Youth Club to join in their trip to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. What a fun experience! District Two Czech Beseda Dancers performed at Czech Feszt which was held on Halloween.
November The annual District Two lock-in was held in Temple at the City Recreation Center. We had a great turnout with members bringing friends to let them know how much fun we have within the SPJST family. There were volleyball, basketball, dancing, games, movies, crafts, karaoke, food, and just the plain ol’ hanging out with friends. It was fun to have the facility all to ourselves, especially with the big gym. Everyone had a great time.
December To show appreciation to all youth leaders, assistants, and camp chaperones, a Christmas party was held in their honor. There are no words that can thank these friends enough for all the hard work, time, and jiggling of their schedules to make all the things happen for our youth. Many youth clubs presented Christmas programs at their home lodges. Beseda dancers performed at Christmas parties. Beseda dancers rode on the beautiful SPJST Float. District Two King Sam Vanicek and Queen Nichole Festa rode in the Temple Christmas Parade in a Corvette furnished by Editor Melanie and husband David. Duke Ty Stock and Duchess Shelby Horak kept right up with their king and queen and rode in a Corvette also furnished by Melanie and David. The weather was cold and misty, but our faithful royalty loved being in full view atop the Corvettes. I was honored to chauffeur them. The most popular answer when asked what the king and queen enjoy the most during their reign is “riding the Corvette.” Thank you, Melanie and David! Your generosity of sharing the Corvettes gives our royality an added spotlight during their reign. January 2010 It was a rather slow month for youth. What a way to start off a new year—by giving the parents a break to get over the holidays. There was interest in four new youth clubs within our district. What a way to begin 2010!
February We get back into the swing of things and enjoy seeing our friends at the annual District Two Skating Party in Temple. This activity has been held for well over 35 years and seems to get bigger and better each year. Everyone enjoys skating then waiting for their number to be called for a lucky door prize. Keeping with our District Two saying, “Every youth in District Two is a winner,” we make that happen here, too. Each youth receives a dollar bill as they leave. Prior to the skating party, a membership drive was held for potential new youth clubs. It was a terrific meeting with many of those in attendance joining us in skating. March The annual District Two Spring Meeting was held at Lodge 80, Holland. Youth participated in the Czech
Easter Egg (kraslice) decorating contest. After the meeting, the youth were excited to see the Easter Bunny had arrived outdoors. The grounds were covered with all colors of eggs and candy.
April I enjoyed visiting many youth clubs and welcoming the new ones at Round Rock, Temple, Morgan’s Point, and Falls County. How exciting to have more youth be a part of our great organization!
May Most youth clubs in District Two participated in Join Hands Day by helping others. Some gave to food pantries, cleaned cemeteries, had bake sales for those in need, worked at a community barbecue fundraiser, or helped the local animal shelters. Thank you for showing your true fraternalism.
June The LIT workshop was awesome. We had 17 attending from our district this year. I am so proud of their involvement and enthusiasm throughout their time at Cooper Farm. Beseda dancers performed at Pioneer Day at the Mayborn Center in Temple and were so well received. Approximately 125 youth, friends, and parents enjoyed an evening of swimming at Temple’s Walker Pool. It was great to see so many. July What a fun and exciting month! See more in the camp and YAD sections in this Youth Spectacular.
August It was the most memorable State YAD for District Two in over 30 years. The State Royalty King and Queen are from District Two! Words could never
55
be expressed for the excitement in the audience when former SYD John Hoelscher read the final results. As District Youth Counselor, my years of waiting became reality. King Samuel Vanicek and Queen Jacqueline Klaus made my dream come true. Congratulations to both of you and to State Duke Ty Stock and State Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer. What fun it will be representing SPJST! Congratulations to all participants of State YAD. One big activity was left before the summer ended prior to the busy school year—SPJST Corpus Christi Getaway. District Two youth voted to have this as our summer trip. Thirty-one youth club families traveled to Corpus to spend the weekend. What an awesome time we all had! Each youth club participated in the sand sculpture contest. Way to go, Seaton Youth Club, for winning first place. What talent! Congratulations to the youth clubs represented—Elgin, Cyclone, Seaton, Beyersville, Holland, Temple, and Round Rock. District Two took tops for having the most in attendance from the entire state. Thank you, SPJST officers, directors, and Home Office staff for all your hard work in making this activity so enjoyable for everyone. The limbo, hula hoop contest, musical chairs, kolache eating contest, bunco, and all the other tournaments were excellent. There was so much to do for all ages. I again thank each youth member of District Two for your love, joy, and dedication to the SPJST Youth Program. Please encourage your friends to join in on the fun! Thank you, SPJST, for giving us a lifetime of memories. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

District Three Camp
July 9 to 11, 2010 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas
Districts Three and Five met to-
gether for the first time for SPJST Summer Camp at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas. It was a lot of fun meeting new friends from other districts. The two districts really did enjoy each other and made many new memories during camp time from Friday, July 9 to Sunday, July 11, 2010. With camp being three days, many activities were planned by both DYCs and Assistant DYCs to make sure everyone would have a great time together. With District Three being so far from the ENC campgrounds, we all had to be driven by a charter bus to ensure everyone’s safety in the travel. This year, it felt very different waking up so early to catch a bus to be at camp by noon. But, this made registration a lot easier. As you loaded up on the bus, all paperwork had to be done. But with the distance being closer for District Five, our district was welcomed by our new camp friends with open arms. Thank you, DYC Barbara LinneyGonzales for that fraternal welcome. It was deeply loved by us all! With Barbara and John and Diana Engelke directing us in an orderly fashion when unloading our bags off the bus, it just made things go so smoothly. John and Lisa Hoelscher were ready with the trailer to take our bags right to our cabins quickly so we could get started with our day. The first day consisted of an orientation swim check by John Hoelscher at the new pool. This just helped the life guards in knowing who can swim in the deep or swallow end. Other activities we had that day were a great
trip to the lake where the kids enjoyed it very much. The other groups stayed on the campgrounds and attended activities such as archery, BB guns, and crafts. Many thanks need to be acknowledged to Tom and Kay Weeks who supervised archery. Tom has been our archery instructor for several years. With having more kids this year, we needed an extra person, and Kay was the best person for the job. Thank you, Tom and Kay, for making archery a safe and fun activity. I still think this is the children’s favorite event at camp from year to year. Tom, you always know how to make it fun and still teach new techniques in archery. This year, we had a new event that everyone just had to do and learn some safety rules, and that was the BB guns. Again, since we had so many in attendance, we needed two special people supervising this event. This job could not have been handled any better than with Ken Humphreys and Kenneth “Scooter” Holland. Their lesson before using the BB guns was a great tool for the children; they will remember Ken Humphreys’ instructions for many years. Scooter’s assistance was to make sure that everyone understood the safety and to have fun at this event. A special thanks to Ken and Scooter for handling this event with such class. Everyone including the adults learned a lot from them. Our crafty ladies had several things to do in the craft area. This is where we all enjoyed leaders and parents from both districts. Mary Ann Kieschnick, Michelle Wockenfuss, Brenda Moyle, Catherine Manchack, and Jennifer
Malovets from District Five along with Debra Daniel, Peggy Dobecka, Pat Dieterich, and Ann Pustejovsky from District Three all took turns in helping, instructing, and guiding the children with crafts. There were several types of crafts to be done, and these crafty people had more fun watching and helping the kids with their crafts. Thank you, ladies, for your ideas; they were great! With the heat building up, our snacks are a traditional one with Jerry Zabojnik’s sno cones! Nothing is more refreshing than a shaved icy flavored Zabo’s sno cone. If you have never had one, you just need to come to District Three Camp; he is always there to cool you off from the heat. When District Five campers and chaperones tried his sno cones, they thought they had died and gone to heaven! Jerry always comes up with new flavors each year to match up with our theme. Thank you, Jerry, for continuing the challenge of coming up with new suggested flavors that is always enjoyed by all. But I still like grape the best! Our evening events were so much fun that we just wished time would not get away from us. The Comedy Club was really fun with John and Lisa Hoelscher. We learned all kinds of new camp songs and traditions. John Hoelscher made a camp fire for us to make s’mores and the oowee-gooey, chocolatey treat made by the LITs was just what we all needed. After eating that great snack, we all went swimming and swam until 1:30 in the morning. Of course, our chaperones were ready to head towards their cabins to make sure lights were out by 2 a.m. The next morning would be a long
one. It would be the only full day we would have, and we tried to squeeze all of our fun things within a 24-hour period. Our flag ceremony by District Three, ages 9 to 11 boys and girls, was different and very patriotic. And the ages 12 to 14 girls really did put on a show with the morning prayer. After breakfast, we all headed in our groups to high ropes, pond, pavilion, and nature hikes. John Hoelscher and his high ropes course staff treated us to the scary “Beast”! That is sooo high and sooo tall and sooo scary. But I know the kids enjoyed it sooo much! The zip-line was really different and a lot of fun, too. There were other high rope things that the kids got to do that were scary even for me to just watch them from the ground. I was just proud of those who all tried new things and tested their fears of being so high and challenging themselves to new heights. The lifeguards were at the pond watching and securing safety with the blob and swim area. I was surprised with a beautiful lily flower that the girls brought me as a special thank you for letting them have so much fun. The nature hike was a new event for Melissa Hubenak. She had a quick lesson from John Hoelscher as she hiked with the three groups to explain some of the highlights of the nature part of the campground. I think Melissa then realized that the ENC campground is a very large camp. Thank you, Melissa, for being a great sport about taking on this challenge. Back at the pavilion, we had a basketball challenge game going on. It was fun watching the kids coming up with all kinds of shooting styles and making the baskets as if they were

pros. I do believe Mark Cuban needed to know some of District Three and Five kids to join on with his team. As the evening came, District Five held its flag-lowering ceremony and prayer. They came prepared with a patriotic sunset skit that involved their whole district. They enjoyed doing one of John Hoelscher’s prayer skits which was enjoyed by all as we gathered for supper. The second night of activities were even longer than the first. We had skit night by cabins. Each cabin had to come up with a short skit. We never had so much fun, laughter, and talent displayed by all. This, I think, was my favorite event. It is just amazing and fun to watch what all the kids come up with, in just a short period of time, with people they really don’t know. After that, we had awards. The kids did not know that the DYCs and Assistant DYCs were watching and observing each cabin and how well everyone was getting along and having fun. Chaperones received a thank you camp gift as well as John Hoelscher’s family and staff. This was our way of saying thanks for taking the time off to be with us, watching the children, and making sure that they had a memorable time. When we were done with awards, Lynda Novak and Diana Engelke had a nighttime, colorful walk outside to the pavilion to get ice cream sandwich snacks. There were all different colored circles that led you up to the pavilion and a cool direction to your treat. When you are at ENC campgrounds at night, the stars shine a lot brighter and with the colorful circles, it was just a sight to see. Carrie Ann Jones taught us a Czech song. It was a tongue-twister in Czech, and she conducted this song in sections. It was fun to watch and listen to everyone saying the new words. I did teach the campers some new words, but we all had more fun singing the songs that everyone had already learned at past camps. It was so good to hear that they did not forget the
2010 SPJST Youth Spectacular
songs, and all enjoyed singing them. Melissa Hubenak and Christopher Novak set up the karaoke machine for everyone to enjoy. The kids enjoyed dancing and singing. After awhile, it was already to the point that they were all just acting silly, but having fun. Thank you, Melissa, for bringing your equipment to camp and helping out with the nighttime entertainment. Slowly, one by one, chaperones were leading their groups back to the cabins to get ready for lights out. By the time we got everyone back to the cabins, it was already 2 a.m. By this time, I knew camp 2010 was going to be counted as a fun, good, memorable one. District Five held its flag ceremony on the short, last day of camp. District Three, ages 6 to 8 boys and girls held their prayer, as we had vesper service led by John Hoelscher before breakfast Sunday morning. We all knew that our time was really running short, and camp would be ending soon. This is the time the children began grouping off with their new friends to exchange emails and phone numbers so they could keep in touch with each other. After breakfast, all groups went to the low ropes course for a new teamwork experience. This was the same exercise that John Hoelscher had for the LITs, and I was really anxious to see how the little ones would do on this event. Some thought it was hard, and some thought it
was really challenging. But I know they really faced some new challenges, and to me, that is what camp is all about! As I headed back to my cabin to start packing up all the stuff that we had brought, I had to give a special thanks to Camp Nurse Brenda Carmin. She was always there and made sure the kids were having a good time without any bumps, bruises, tummy aches, headaches, and to hand out medication - making the children feel as if they were at home. Things just went so smoothly, but that is really because Brenda knows District Three kids and had treated them in the years past. She had fun learning the children from District Five, and we hope that they will be returning with us in the future camps. She knows that her job as camp nurse will be easier because she now is learning the names and medical care of the District Five children so it will be even easier for her next time. Thank you, Brenda, for your medical care you gave

us during camp. I have a very special thanks to my assistants Lynda Novak and Diana Engelke. They had helped me get together with District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales to set the schedule, cabin assignments, snacks, and anything else that needed planning. But there was always one special person who just looked over all of us during camp. John Engelke is the one who really made sure things went the way they’re suppose to. He is always the one to just jump into the situation if we were to have any problems. Without John and Diana Engelke, my job would be very hard on me! I am so appreciative of their hard work and dedication to ensure fun and safety to everyone. Thank you, John and Diana. The two districts are so grateful for all of your fraternal acts! Last, but not least, I need to say thank you to all of the chaperones. Without you, camp could never really happen. You took time off from your busy schedules and donated it to our children. Thank you for caring for the youth and making sure we all had fun. One thing I am proud to say about District Three chaperones is that they do not treat camp like a vacation. They really do help out the youth, give suggestions, and treat the children in their cabins as if they were their own. This means so much to me, and I appreciate that very much. As my year comes close to an end, all I have are memories of all the good times and friendships that I have made along the way. This year has been an exciting one, and I am so proud of all of the youth participation and eagerness to continue on all of our traditions. Dobry Den in 2010 will be put down in my history and memory books, and all the fun I had with each and everyone in my district. Thank you, District Three, for a wonderful year. I cannot wait until next year! Fraternally yours, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST—

District Five Camp
July 9 to July 11, 2010 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas
District Five camped this year with
District Three at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas, from Friday, July 9 to Sunday, July 11, 2010. These two districts had never camped together since I became involved in SPJST in 1987. It was a lot of fun. District Three is a very large group, and with us being smaller, it was a good fit. They have a lot of older youth where we in District Five have the young ones. We all arrived on Friday around lunch time and checked in with Mrs. Engelke of District Three. She gave everyone his/her cabin assignments, and we all unloaded. Once we were set up, we headed to the mess hall for lunch. After lunch, we broke into groups and for the next day and a half, we enjoyed activities such as crafts, archery, BB guns, the lake, high/low ropes, swimming, hay ride, s’mores, and skits as well as an awards ceremony. I think that the sno cones that Mr. Jerry of District Three made were probably the biggest hit of camp for the young, and even young-at-heart. I enjoyed just the plain crushed ice as even some of the younger campers were asking for it as well.
The weather cooperated with us, and we only had one scare of a rain storm, but it passed us by. Thank goodness! It was true Texas heat though. I think the only encounter with any snakes had to be with my son Keith and myself. Mavrick had just pushed us off in the kayak, and under it curled up, was a copperhead. Needless to say, that was enough for DYC Barbara who discovered it as well as Mavrick. He immediately began to look for something to kill the snake. Luckily, one of the chaperones from District Three had a hoe and just so happened to be at the pond with us. The copperhead was then a dead snake! All of District Five really enjoyed camp, and we look forward to next year as well as years to come at our new found home and camp! Thanks to all the DYCs, Assistant DYCs, youth leaders, chaperones, parents, and especially the staff for making this such an enjoyable camp! District Six Camp
July 11 to 13, 2010 • SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas
istrict Six Leaders-in-Training, District Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela, and District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom planned for a wonderful and awesome camp that was held Sunday, July 11 to Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter, Texas. There was a total of 43 youth and chaperones from various lodges including Lodges 30, Taiton; 40, El Campo-Hillje; 4, Hallettsville; 97, Placedo; 32, Victoria; and 148, El Maton. Camp was under the direction of District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela. Serving as Leaders-inTraining (LITs) for the weekend were Vincent Lutringer, Ryan Drapela, Allison and Jessica Fucik, and Sarah Supak, all of Lodge 30, Taiton; Johathan Vahalik and Mark Siptak, both of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; and Andrew Zielonka of Lodge 148, El Maton. Throughout the weekend, LITs were in charge of various responsibilities and activities. They made sure all youth participated and were on time for each event, such as the ropes course, swimming in the pond and in the pool, games, and devotional. My husband Greg and I arrived at the camp at 12:30 p.m. to get things in order and set up before the campers arrived at 1 p.m. As the campers arrived, they were welcomed by DYC Lisa Bubela and District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom. The youth were provided snacks when they arrived. What a treat because it was very hot! After everyone arrived safely, DYC Lisa welcomed the group, then followed with the orientation of camp rules. They were then dismissed to find cabin assignments. After they returned from setting up sleeping quarters, we were ready for the first event of the day. We were off to a great afternoon at Fayette County Lake. We must thank bus driver Lisa Hoelscher for getting us to the lake safely. The youth sang songs on the way to the lake. At the lake, the youth enjoyed water skiing and tubing behind the boats and swimming in the lake. This was the first for our campers, and they really had a wonderful, great time. Thanks to John and Lisa for running the boats. There were some campers
D
who never got off of the tubes — they rode all afternoon long. We also enjoyed snacks and sno cones for it was a very hot day. After a fun-filled afternoon, I really thought the youth would be worn out, but who was I fooling? We returned to camp safely again thanks to bus driver Lisa. The youth cleaned up and got ready for the evening meal which was spaghetti and meatballs, salad, garlic
bread, and trimmings. It was great! After the evening meal, campers enjoyed popcorn and the movie “Little Rascals.” The night ended with the LITs in charge of the devotional. The morning came quickly. We began with a flag ceremony and singing “The Star Spangled Banner.” After reciting a meal prayer, we were off for a wonderful breakfast of pancakes and sausage patties, cereal, milk, and juice. Then, we were ready for the start of a new day at Cooper Farm. We went to the new ropes course area which was incredible and included rock walls, zip-lines, and walking across a bridge some three stories high. Believe it or not, there were quite a few
of the chaperones and myself who participated in the zip line. Maybe we were just a little envious of the youth having so much fun. After being on such a high, the youth were ready to cool off. They were sent to put on swimsuits for the pool. Yes, we were off to the new, large, and wonderful pool where some played water volley ball, slid down the slides, or just enjoyed sitting and visiting. Then, we were off for the noon meal of hot dogs and trimmings. They were great! Everyone then took a short rest in their cabins after a fun-filled morning and awaiting a fun-filled afternoon to

come. Afternoon activities consisted of blobbing in the pond, archery, and BB gun target shooting. The evening meal was hamburgers and the trimmings. It was great again. By the time we left camp, we all weighed just a little more. Thanks to the wonderful cooks for the week—Greg Bubela and District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and wife Kathy. After the evening meal, the campers went to put on swimsuits again — like they did not have a enough swimming. Some played water volleyball, slid down the slides at the pool, and some of us just enjoyed sitting and visiting. All talked about the wonderful day’s events. The evening ended with the LITs having prepared a special devotional. Then we enjoyed root beer floats for a night cap before heading to their cabins for a good night’s rest. Tuesday morning, we all awoke to a beautiful sunrise. We took a morning hike to the end of the road for a Kodak moment. Each lodge took pictures in
front of the ENC sign which is at the entrance to the camp. Boy, were they ready for breakfast. We all headed back for eggs, sausage, tortillas, hot sauce, milk, juice, and cereal. After breakfast, a craft was presented by DYC Lisa Bubela. The youth made wind chimes out of spoons and decorated them with beads, birds, dragon flies, and bees. After the craft was finished, the youth were asked to go back to the cabins to get their belongings together, to clean their cabins, and to be ready to depart for home. Youth of District Six, I hope you all enjoyed your stay at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm. Most of all, I appreciated you all coming out for District Six Camp. Without you, it would not be possible. I hope you had a great time. I am looking forward to a better and more wonderful camp next year where we will have more activities. I cannot say enough about my LITs — you are the greatest. You are great leaders of tomorrow. Some day, as I have said before, I know and hope that

one of you will fill my shoes. There is plenty of room for more help and leadership which all of you show so greatly. A special thanks to my Assistant DYC Susan Siptak for always being at my side and willing to go that extra mile for the youth; to our wonderful camp nurse Teresa Treybig — What can I say? You stole so many hearts. We enjoyed having you, and I know you will be back next year or I might have something hanging over my head; to my chaperones — Tommy Drapela and Yvonne Marcaurele, both of Lodge 30, Taiton; Mary Monclova and Robert, both of Lodge 32, Victoria; and Shirley Kalmus of Lodge 4, Hallettsville — thanks for the great help and hard work and for always being with the youth and staying on top of things. I know most of you have jobs, and I appreciate you taking the time off to spend with us as chaperones. And to my cooks — great job! A special thanks goes out to our wonderful District Six Director Mike

Ahlstrom and wife Kathy. It was great to have you even if you were in the kitchen most of the time, but you always gave me encouraging words and stood by me the days before and after. A special thanks goes out to the parents who encouraged their children to attend District Six Camp, and to former State Youth Director John — what can we say? Our dream has come true. The camp is well on its way. I know you and your family have given up a lot to get to this point in your life and for the ENC, job well done. And to your wife Lisa and children Michael, Emma, and Abby — it is always a pleasure having you. As the youth of today always say, it is the SPJST Youth Program that puts self-confidence into their lives and makes them strong and stand tall. It is a great privilege to serve as DYC of District Six. I look forward to camp next year! Lisa Bubela District Six Youth Counselor —SPJST—
