Czech Enthusiasm at the State Fair What a wonderful day it was at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on

10-10-10 (Sunday, October 10, 2010)! It was the Heritage Festival presented by Texas Cultural Partnership. The partnership consists of the American Czech Culture Society, Norwegian Society of Texas, Ukrainian American Society of Texas, and German Heritage Society. Several SPJST members serve as officers of the American Czech Culture Society or on the steering committee of the Texas Cultural Partnership. The delicious lunch of sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, bread, and strudel, catered by Publication Committee Vice Chairman Bessie Petr and her amazing crew, was worth the drive to Dallas! Dining on this Czech cuisine while musicians played and sang Czech tunes really gets a person into the Czech spirit. Outside, the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra performed. Sister Bessie has been coordinating beseda dancers for about 59 years. This year, two youth groups and four adult groups performed. What a beautiful site to see almost 50 people dressed in kroj performing. For some, it was the first year to dance. For others, it was close to the 60th year. Congratulations to the day’s organizers and volunteers on a very successful event that SPJST was proud to be a part of. Thanks for your efforts and for continuing to promote Czech heritage at the State Fair of Texas! Thanks, d.knape Special thanks to Lodge 187, Round Rock member David Knape for sharing his poems with us. We get

calls about whether David’s poetry is published in a book. He does have two books currently available. One is Short Order Poems and the other is Wolf Country - Plain and Simple Poems. Wolf Country contains the poem “When I Think Czech.” Each book contains 30 pages of poems and is available for $5.95, plus $1.50 shipping/handling. Orders can be mailed to D. Knape, 1405 Newbury Lane, Plano, Texas 75025.

Lodge 15 Buckholts proud of new fire station

President Douglas Williams called the meeting to order at 5 p.m. Guest Regina Peevey was asked to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. All officers were present except Vice President Scott Brandon. Second Vice President Adolph Jurca sat in for him. We had 13 in attendance — nine members and four guests. The secretary and treasurer each gave their reports, and the reports were accepted as read. In old business, President Williams thanked Arthur Peevey for mowing the grass and spreading some gravel for us. We also want to thank President Williams for mowing the grass several times to cut down on expenses. Rentals have been down some here lately, but President Williams stated things look better for the upcoming months. On the Memorial Garden, they decided to make a few changes so it is not quite ready at this time. In new business, President Williams stated that he plans to put up a bulletin board to display old pictures

and things of interest. We are in need of some tables to replace some damaged ones, and we want to get some additional plastic chairs. This has been an exciting week here in Buckholts seeing the very first fire station becoming a reality. It is such a spacious building — 4,000 square feet. Twenty-seven workers from around the state came and helped erect it. Volunteers from all around the community helped in so many ways. Delicious meals were provided each day for the workers, and refreshments were provided for everyone attending the dedication. Thanks to Mueller, Inc. and Bob Phillips with Texas Country Reporter. It was so exciting to see the Texas Country Reporter van in our little town and to meet Bob Phillips of the Texas Country Reporter in person after watching him on television for so many years. In fact, this is his 37th year. The nice fire trucks were in the parade as in neighboring towns which

presented our fire department with many nice useful gifts as well. On display was Buckholt’s very first fire truck built by the Gresek brothers. It was built from an old school bus chassis and an old fuel tank in 1946 — 64 years ago. It was openair no cab. We give thanks to Frank Tomascik and family for all their work involved in loading up this old fire truck and displaying it at the dedication. Thanks to Tri Co Propane for furnishing the long flatbed truck on which to display the truck. The fire truck had not been moved since it was placed on Frank’s property in 1973 — 37 years ago — so the wheels were imbedded in the ground, and trees had grown up all around it. It was quite a job to get it loaded up. Most of the firemen from back then are deceased except August Marek, Robert Holder, and Frank Tomascik. Frank tells the story that when they were putting out a fire along the railroad track. Felix Marek was driving, and Frank was applying the water when all of a sudden, the fire truck got over-balanced on the downward slope, and Felix jumped from the truck. The fire truck completely turned over and ended back up on its wheels! Though the truck had no cab, it was a blessing that Felix could jump off, and that Frank was not injured. We are so thankful for our firemen. What would we do without them? The entire 30-minute show on the Texas Country Reporter will cover the whole event which will be on television on Thanksgiving weekend so watch for it. President Williams brought us upto-date on upcoming SPJST events. The SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive began October 1. Sandie Fischer made the motion that we contribute as usual, seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried.

Next Meeting—November 8 We continue to miss Willie and Adeline Kohutek, and surely hope that they will be able to return home soon. We are so thankful to hear that Jerry Haisler is able to be home. We continue to remember all these folks in our daily prayers. We missed some of our old faithful members—Lillie Zajicek, Charlsie Svetlik, and Martha Glaser. We hope that they will be back with us at the next meeting which will be held on November 8 at 5 p.m. We hope that you can be there, too. Fifth Circuit Upholds Texas Pledge of Allegiance

VӖSTNÍK

AUSTIN – The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled on October 13, 2010, that the Texas Pledge of Allegiance is constitutional. The federal court’s decision rejected an appeal filed by a Dallas couple, who unsuccessfully argued that the State’s Pledge violated the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. “Today a federal appeals court rejected a challenge to the Texas Pledge of Allegiance and found that it is constitutional for the State to acknowledge religious faith,” Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said. “This ruling marks not only a second consecutive victory for the State pledge, but also a victory for all Texans’ constitutionally protected rights and freedoms.” The words “under God” were added to the Texas Pledge of Allegiance in 2007. That year, the plaintiffs filed a lawsuit challenging the phrase’s constitutionality and sought an injunction banning its use. In the district court, the State successfully argued that reciting the Texas Pledge is a patriotic exercise – and is protected by the constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of religion. The federal district court issued a decision rejecting the plaintiffs’ challenge in 2009, and the plaintiffs appealed their loss to the Fifth Circuit. In the October 13 ruling, the Fifth Circuit affirmed the lower court’s decision, ruling that the Texas Pledge “. . . is a patriotic exercise, and it is made no less so by the acknowledgement of Texas’s religious heritage via the inclusion of the phrase ‘under God.’” The appeals court also denied the plaintiffs’ argument that the Texas Pledge endorses a particular religious belief. Rather, the ruling acknowledged: “A pledge can constitutionally acknowledge the existence of, and even value, a religious belief without impermissibly favoring that value or belief, without advancing belief over non-belief, and without coercing participation in a religious exercise. Texas’s pledge is of this sort and consequently survives this challenge.” The Texas Pledge of Allegiance reads: “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.” —SPJST—

ʻTis the Season to Help Hungry Pets and Their Owners

(NewsUSA) - During a tough economic climate, it can be a stressful time for many homebound seniors, if not for their pets. Many seniors, when strapped for resources, choose to feed their pets instead of themselves. This means neither the pet owner nor the pet get the nutrition they need to stay healthy. To keep both pets and their owners fed, Banfield Pet Hospital and the Banfield Charitable Trust (BCT) partnered with the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which provides home-delivered meals to people in need, to create a pet-feeding program called Season of Suppers, which is now in its fifth year. As part of the program, more than 760 Banfield locations are collecting pet food and monetary donations during November and December to help homebound seniors feed their pets. Despite the current economy, the BCT hopes to collect 40 tons of pet food and raise $100,000 to fund pet food distribution programs, which is an increase from last year. Season of Suppers does more than provide meals. The funds it raises each year help sustain and expand pet-feeding programs throughout the country. As a direct result of the Season of Suppers campaign, more than 100 petfeeding programs have been funded or received much-needed support. Season of Suppers runs from November 1 until December 31. There are three ways to help feed hungry pets this year:

1. Purchase pet food and place it in the Season of Suppers donation bin in any Banfield Pet Hospital (located inside PetSmart). The BCT suggests items that are easy to transport, such as small bags and cans.

2. Donate money at any Banfield Pet Hospital in the Season of Suppers donation box. To find your nearest Banfield location, visit www.banfield.net

3. Contribute online by visiting www.BCTSOS.org and clicking the “donate now” button. Your donation of $30 will help feed one pet for an entire month. —SPJST—

They come at night by the light of the moon and in the half-light creep across the room Carrying their tools of torture along a bag of tricks for the woebegone

Then shake you from sleep and smilingly say how are we feeling are we having a good day? Then roll you over suck out some blood they'd take all you had if they thought they could

Important Tax and Retirement Planning Deadlines for 2010 By James L. Lee, III, CPA

This article focuses on a number of fast approaching tax filing and document execution deadlines. It is not too early to begin thinking about these and other year-end tax and retirement planning opportunities as you prepare for James L. Lee, III year-end. November 2, 2010 – Deadline To Establish A SIMPLE IRA Plan Effective 1/1/2010. An employer may adopt a SIMPLE IRA plan to become effective January 1, 2010, provided the employer will not maintain any Qualified Retirement Plan (QRP) for 2010. A 457 plan is not treated as a QRP for purposes of denying SIMPLE IRA contributions. Note: beginning 2002, salary deferral contributions made to an eligible 457(b) plan no longer reduces the amount an employee may defer to a SIMPLE IRA. November 2, 2010 – Deadline For Providing SIMPLE IRA Required Notices (Including Notification Of Plan Termination). Employers sponsoring a SIMPLE IRA plan must provide each eligible employee with two required notices 60 days prior to the start of the 2010 plan year. First, employers must provide eligible employees with either (1) a Summary Plan Description (SPD) for the plan, or (2) a copy of the IRS Form 5304-Simple or 5305-Simple (whichever is applicable). Second, employers are also required to notify each eligible employee that the employee may make or change salary reduction elections during this 60-day period, the “election period.” Such elections or changes will become effective on January 1, 2010. Employers terminating a SIMPLE IRA effective December 31, 2010 must include notification of the termination. December 1, 2010 – Deadline For Notification Of Switch From Regular 401(k) Or Profit Sharing Plan To A Safe Harbor 401(k) Plan. Employers that have amended their existing 401(k) or PSPs to include a safe-harbor 401(k) provision effective 2010 must provide written notice to each eligible employee between 30 and 90 days prior to the start of the 2010 plan year. The written notice must (1) explain their rights and obligations under the plan, (2) be accurate and comprehensive, and (3) be written

in a manner calculated to be understood by the average employee eligible to participate in the plan. Notification that each eligible employee may make, or change, a salary reduction election that will become effective on January 1, 2011. December 15, 2010 – Last Day to Initiate A 2010 Termination Of A Money Purchase Pension Plan Or (2) Reduction Of Future Plan Year Benefit Accruals To Zero. Beginning 2002, Economic Growth & Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA) increased the deduction limit for Profit Sharing Plans (PSPs) from 15% to 25% of eligible compensation. Because of the new limits, employers will no longer need their existing Money Purchase Pension plans (MPPs) to maximize contributions. Therefore, many employers will either (1) terminate existing MPPs, or (2) change the plan document to cease benefit accruals. ERISA requires employers that are terminating a MPP, or changing it to cease benefit accruals, to provide written notice to all eligible participants at least 15 days prior to the effective date of the termination or change. December 31, 2010 is the last day to effectively terminate or merge a MPP prior to the beginning of the 2011 tax year. Therefore, the employer must provide the written notice on or before December 15, 2010. December 31, 2010 – Last Day To Execute Documents To Adopt A Qualified Retirement Plan (other than a Safe-Harbor 401(k)) For 2010. December 31 is the last day an employer may execute document to establish a Qualified Retirement Plan for 2010 to be effective any date between January 1st and December 31st, provided the employer did not previously maintain a Simple IRA plan for 2010. Employers whose corporate entity came into being after January 1 should use an effective date coinciding with or following the corporation’s inception date. 401(k) plan notes: A participant may only defer compensation earned after a salary deferral form has been completed and signed. New Safe-Harbor 401(k)s must be established by October 1st, see above. December 31, 2010 – Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) Deadline. Taxpayers taking their second and following RMDs, from a QRP or IRA, must take distribution of their 2010

RMD on or before December 31, 2010. Taxpayers reaching age 70½ during 2010 may delay taking their 2010 RMD, the initial RMD, until April 1, 2011. Taxpayers electing to delay distribution of their first RMD will then take two distributions in 2011: the 2010 RMD by April 1, 2011 and the 2011 RMD by December 31, 2011. Tips for a healthy Halloween

(StatePoint) Halloween ghouls may give kids a fright, but the buckets and bags of candy that come home can be equally scary for parents. With the abundance of sweet treats consumed on Halloween, not to mention the Thanksgiving pies and holiday cookies to come, now is the perfect time to teach your kids healthy habits, such as nutritious eating and good oral hygiene. Here are some ideas for keeping things healthy while still having fun: Candy Common Sense Consider offering alternatives to candy on Halloween. Stickers, removable tattoos or bottles of bubbles will be a refreshing change for kids of all ages. Toys like jump ropes, hacky sacks or sidewalk chalk for hopscotch will encourage kids to be active while still having fun. Of course, you won’t be able to avoid candy completely. Let your kids indulge now and then. Enjoying treats in moderation will help your kids learn to savor the moment.

The Unsweet Tooth Half of all American kids will have a cavity by age 10. The good news is that you can play a role in teaching your kids healthy oral care habits from an early age. Be a role model with your own oral health by brushing and flossing every day and encourage your kids to practice along with you. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests parents supervise children under seven. Making brushing fun can encourage interdependence so kids become accustomed to their daily routines. Power toothbrushes, which typically remove more plaque than manual ones, can assist parents in teaching

healthy brushing habits. Consider trying a toothbrush like the Philips Sonicare For Kids. It’s simple to use and designed with two gripping locations so you can help your child brush. It also has a “KidTimer” to help children reach the dentist-recommended twominute brushing time and musical tones indicating when it’s time to

move to a different area of the mouth. To learn more, visit sonicareforkids.philips.com.

Snack-or-Treat? On Halloween, offer your kids a healthy snack before they go trick-ortreating. Peanut butter and apple slices and a glass of low-fat milk will go a long way in keeping candy cravings at bay. Filling them with protein and fiber will leave less room for sweet treats that offer little nutritional value.

Party Down Halloween parties are a great new tradition that allows kids to stay safely off the streets while eating a moderate amount of sweets and getting exercise from fun and games. Just make sure you keep lit candles and jack-olanterns away from high-traffic areas. Then join in the fun! —SPJST—

Vampire bats not to be feared

Myths abound of blood-sucking bats that prey on people. Even the notorious blood-sucker himself, Dracula, turns into a fluttering bat in some versions of the story. This further compounds the myth that bats seek out unsuspecting people for a tasty meal. In reality, bats are not the demonic creatures many people make them out to be. Vampire bats really do exist, but there are only three species, and they live in Central and South America. Vampire bats survive on the blood of birds and other mammals. However, they don’t target humans. Vampire bat bodies are about the size of one’s thumb, with a wingspan of about 8 inches. They do not “suck” blood. Rather, they bite their victims. The saliva of these bats contains a substance that prevents the blood from

It was such an honor to have my grandparents attend our awards and Grandparents Day celebration. My Granny Ann and Papa Fritsch and my Grandma Rita and Grandpa Harry Marker drove all the way in from Houston. If there was an award for who drove the farthest, they would have gotten it! I got perfect attendance again, and I also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for the seventh year. I could have not been prouder to receive this award with the

only other senior in our lodge, Meghan Blum. It just shows that being a part of the SPJST organization is about giving back to our community and getting involved. This is my last celebration I will attend as a youth member so it was a little sad in a way; but I know once I graduate in May, I will be back to always support the Lodge 17 youth. clotting. The bats then lap up the running blood. Another chemical in the saliva numbs the animals’ skin and keeps them from waking up while the bat is feeding at night. Bats that are found elsewhere in the world generally feed upon insects or fruit. Bats actually can be beneficial, eating mosquitoes and other nuissance bugs. (MS) —SPJST—

Black cat folklore

Black cats have long been associated with Halloween, and frequently found in myths and folklore. Some people believe that black cats are witches’ familiars, or close companions. Others think that black cats are witches reincarnated. In the Middle Ages, black cats were regarded as evil. Perhaps because cats are largely nocturnal, and beings of the night are often feared. Today, Halloween and black cats go hand-in-hand, primarily because decorating often involves pictures of witches and their feline companions. Depending on geography, black cats are thought to bring bad or good luck. Here is some of the common folklore and beliefs:

• Finding a white hair on a black cat brings good luck. • To dream of a black cat is lucky.

• In Asia, a black cat is considered lucky.

Both the words and the music of Kde domov muj? come from the opening scene of a comic theater piece, Fidlovačka aneb Žádný hněv a žádná rvačka (Fidlovačka, or “No Anger and No Brawling,” written by Josef Kajetán Tyl and first performed in the Prague Estates Theatre on December 21, 1834. At the time, Czechs were an ethnic minority in the Austrian Empire, and the German language dominated. Tyl a political activist - asked the music composer František Škroup to compose a “Czech patriotic chorale” as a piece of incidental music for his play, but the result was a bit different than Tyl expected. Škroup produced - based on Tyl’s text - the highly sentimental and slightly melancholy folksong that has become our beloved anthem. There were many different reactions to the opening performance. Some praised the play (often incorrectly identified as an “opera”) as a patriotic work-of-art while others criticized it for being too folksy and vulgar. Nevertheless, during the following years and decades, this inconsequential folksong - which Tyl didn’t like and had considered cutting from the play - became very popular with the Czechs and was often sung at official occasions. Soon after “Czechoslovakia” was formed in 1918, the first verse of Kde domov muj? became the “Czech” part of the national anthem, followed by the first verse of the Slovak song Nad Tatrou sa blyska. And, because there were so many Germans living in Bohemia-Moravia and so many Hungarians living in Slovakia, “official” translations into German and Hungarian were produced to accompany the “Czech” version!

Didn’t realize that there is a second verse to our “Czech” National Anthem? Well, not many people know that there are four verses to our own Star Spangled Banner!
