Lodge 24, Cyclone plans Christmas party

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone was called to order by President Daniel Wilde. After the Pledge of Allegiance, we had a moment of silence for the sick and deceased members. Our sympathy went out to the Robert and Barbara Macek for the loss of Robert’s brother Alfred Macek. We were so sorry and are sure that he will be missed. I also want to apologize for missing the birthdays of two of our dear members Alice Hoelscher - September 19 and Doris Vanicek - September 1 and for missing the anniversary of David and Pat Vanicek on September 10. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer gave the report, and all is going well. The hall and bar manager gave his report. We had a very busy month for September and October. The manager needs a rest. FAC Shirley Hoelscher gave her report reminding each of us about Czech Feszt the weekend of October 23. We hope to see everyone at the festival. We also want to congratulate Susan Skrabanek for being named National Fraternalist of the Year. This is a very high honor and is especially good for the Home Office in Temple, Texas. Joan reported on the last youth club

meeting. They had a hiking trip which all enjoyed. The youth also did a clean-up on the hiking trail for community service. September 19 was the District Two Fall Meeting. There was a Christmas ornament contest. In the youth contest, Samuel Vanicek came in second, but at least he placed. Stephanie Vanicek entered the adult category and she also won — what talent! The youth held a bake sale at Oscar Store on October 9, and they had a great turnout. Lodge 24 is getting ready to spruce up the hall in and out. We are getting ready for new doors to the youth room and a new paint job on the walls of the hall. We will also be replacing light and trimming trees. It seems we are going to be busy. Keep this day on your calendar — December 12. This year, we will be having a Christmas party at the hall again. The hall will furnish the meat, and everyone is asked to bring a side dish and a dessert. This is for December 12. We hope to see everyone there. We call this a potluck covered dish dinner. It will start at 2 p.m. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. If you wish, please bring a gift for Santa Pal - child or adult. toberfest at The Wellington Retirement Home. We enjoyed Joe Kozel’s accordion music, and singers Mary Ann Krivanek, Lydia Alholm, Alene Kercho, and Martha Pelzel. All in attendance did enjoy R.L. Alholm’s sauerkraut, klobase, kolace, and pivo. One resident kept telling everyone how much he enjoyed the sauerkraut and that he hadn’t eaten any in seven years. All of our Friendship Club members in attendance certainly had a great time. Sharron Connelly enjoyed her trip to Branson, Missouri, with her daughter and husband and his mother. She said that they saw lots of shows and especially enjoyed the dinner/show cruise. Tracy Horn’s oldest son and family went on a cruise out of Galveston and offered to drop Tracy off in Bryan for a visit with her sister-in-law. Tracy said that on the first night, they had so much to visit about that they didn’t go to bed until 5:30 a.m. the next morning. Anyway, Tracy had a great time being wined and dined every day for lunch and dinner. Our sympathy goes out to Ann

Conner and Ella Greer on the death of their sister-in-law Betty Musny. May her soul rest in peace. Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, Pauline Morbitzer, Lydia Alholm, and I enjoyed seeing To Kill a Mockingbird at the Artisan Theater. It was a great performance. I just have to comment on the picture perfect white cake Ann Conner and Ella Greer brought for lunch. Not only was it beautiful, but delicious. Both of them are super bakers. I’ve been busy going to funerals in Ennis. Last week, I attended the graveside service for Gladys Houdek. She and her late husband George were good friends, and I still recall all the wonderful times that we had traveling to Houston with their sons Jimmy and Allan to attend Sokol programs and always going to Galveston on Saturday. This week, I attended the visitation and graveside service for my cousin John Vrla. His sister Olga Pechak always referred to me and my sisters as their double cousins because our grandfathers were brothers and our grandmothers were sisters. I always told John that he made me an instant

celebrity when I moved to San Angelo in the early 1960s. John was the television camera person for the Dallas Cowboys and at the end of each game, credits were always shown on the television screen which said, “John Vrla, Television Producer.” Vrla wasn’t exactly a common name in San Angelo so everyone recognized it when I was introduced to them. Joe Kozel entertained us with beautiful accordion music before our meeting. Thank you, Joe! After the Pledge of Allegiance, the meeting was opened with a reading by Mary Ann Krivanek. We had 46 members and two guests. Welcome to George and Mary Carpenter from Tennessee. The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given. The final income for our quilt raffle was $4,692. We gave ourselves a hand. We used some of the money to buy a nice new refrigerator for the hall. A motion by Mary Ann Kozel was made that we donate a minimum of $1,000 of our quilt raffle money to three or four favorite local charities, and Alene Kercho seconded the motion. Motion passed. Doris Overstreet suggested we give $300 to each, and all agreed. The charities will be decided at our next meeting. Gloria thanked everyone for the help many Circle members gave at the wonderful 100th anniversary celebration. A thank you card for a job well done at the anniversary, from the Praslicka’s was read. Cards are being sent to Monalee Hattendorf (she fell getting in her car); Janet Basham, who is having surgery; and to Carman Alcott. Gloria thanked the many members who sent her cards when she was in the hospital. We were reminded to bring canned goods and staples to our November meeting. Also, bring toiletries for Safe Haven. Lisa Juran made a motion to donate the food to St. Thomas pantry, and it was seconded by Marlene Bass. It passed unanimously. After reviewing the menus and costs of the suggested restaurants to cater our November lunch for our meeting, it was decided to have Tim Farek cater with a fajita lunch. None of the October birthday members were present, but we thought about you! Gloria had cute spiders made with Tootsie Pops and pipe cleaners for everyone. There were 17 nice door prizes including some plants brought by Willie Mae Becan. We said grace together before lunch which was hosted by Lois Smith and other helpers. Carmen Alcott couldn’t come so she provided the money to buy fried chicken. We hope to see you on November

I hear it howling the wild Texas wind It blows from the West and wants to come in Moaning and groaning pushing the pane it rants relentless from off the plain and calls to me in loud rough roars It wants to come in It’s pounding the door.

The sand piles up deposits of ore and makes a beach at my back door The silt piles up in waves of red the color of copper the weight of lead and buckets of brown are tossed and blown and the neighbor’s back yard is now my own.

Tumbleweeds fly by and get caught under benches Trash cans roll away and slam into fences Car doors fly free and bang into sides We’re gripping the wheel hang on for a ride! Great gusts whip up and push us awry we veer to the right and off we fly and the sand piles up on the windshield wipers and people go chasing their baby’s diapers

And chasing their caps and holding their skirts caught up in a whirl a devil of dirt and dodging the baskets that run with the wind and slam into car doors Out for a spin!

Old Lubbock is littered with blue and white plastic decorated with danglers a wind show fantastic They cling to chain-links and hang in the trees like forests of flags they flap in the breeze and the fields are filled with Walmart sacks

and sand fills up the sidewalk cracks and overwrought people squint at the wind and talk to themselves “When will it all end”?

The wind is constant The wind is mean It never ends it seems to me for when it blasts it lasts for days it leaves us in a gritty haze It lasts so long it wears us away and makes us cry and curse the day It gusts to 40, 50, and then it’s a hurricane

It’s all the same for creature or man We make a run to get out of the sand We hide in our corners or under the ground and hold our ears to block the sound. “Get out of my way” It pounds its drum “I’ll blow you all To kingdom come.”

Out here on our plains it’s a common occurrence The wind will test your will and endurance It lashes out It is violent and scary

It will pummel and punish your house on the prairie and whatever’s not nailed will pick up and fly set free in the fury we’ll kiss it goodbye It will bend you and blind you and leave you calloused It makes you want to move to Dallas!

But all is not hopeless All is not lost We’ll survive this blow repair the cost and creep out of our burrows when its all said and done and smile at the earth and wink at the sun We’ll talk with our neighbors about weather and wind

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Awards Scholarship to Past Youth Member

Travis Barta, 2010 graduate of Pleasanton High School, is presented a scholarship from Lodge 202, Jourdanton President Lloyd House. Travis, a past youth club officer, turned 18 on August 25. Towards the end of the year, investors begin to size up the performance of their investments for the year. Our winning positions, both realized and unrealized fill us with great satisfaction while our losers sit there and stare us square in the face. Attempting to take advanJames L. Lee, III tage of your losses may help you overcome them both psychologically and financially. First, let’s cover the basics. Shortterm capital gains and losses are incurred in a holding period of one year’s time or less. Long-term gains and losses are incurred over more than a one-year holding period. Short-term gains are subject to the individual’s ordinary income tax rates, up to a maximum of 35 percent. For 2010, long-term gains are taxed at a 15 percent maximum for taxpayers above the 15 percent income tax bracket and longterm gains are taxed at a 0 percent maximum for those in the 10 percent and 15 percent tax brackets. The IRS allows taxpayers to match all short-term gains and losses against each other. Long-term gains and losses are also matched against each other. Any overall short-term gain or loss is then netted against any long-term gain or loss. If the result is a negative amount, no capital gains taxes are due and losses can be used to offset ordinary income up to $3,000 in the current tax year. Additional losses may be carried forward to be used in future years. One last important note is the wash sale. A wash sale occurs when a tax-

payer sells a stock at a loss and either has acquired or acquires during a period beginning 30 days before the sale and ending 30 days after the sale substantially similar stock through a purchase, taxable exchange or purchase of an option. If a wash sale occurs, no loss is recognized for tax purposes on the sale. The loss that would have been recognized, but for the wash sale rule, is added to the basis of the newly acquired stock. With these facts in mind, we can examine tax loss selling as the government’s way of letting you recoup a little something from the losses you have taken in the stocks you own. Tax-loss selling does not turn a loss into a gain, but it may put more post-tax dollars into your pocket. If you sell before the end of the year and turn paper losses into real losses, you reduce the taxes you owe on any profits you took during the year. Remember, this strategy is for taxable accounts only. Psychologically, selling your losers to offset gains in your portfolio can help you to view the loss in a more positive light. Sell the loser and move on. Or, if you are really convinced the stock is not a long-term loser, and that you just experienced unfortunate timing, you can sell the stock under the wash rules and re-purchase it 31 days later. You will take the loss and re-establish your position. As always, you should discuss and coordinate tax-loss strategies with your financial and tax advisors. All About Pumpkins

Pumpkins are a type of gourd that grows on just about every continent (Antarctica not included). The majority of pumpkins are bought and sold around Halloween, commonly to convert to jack-o-lanterns. However, pumpkins can be used as a delicious food source. Here is some other interesting information about pumpkins. Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Seeds from pumpkins dating back to 7000 B.C. have been found in Mexico. The name “pumpkin” evolved originally from the Greek word “pepon,” for large melon. The French called them “pompon,” and the English eventually changed the word to “pumpion.” There are dozens of varieties of pumpkins, and they come in many colors, including white, besides the familiar orange. Most pumpkins can be harvested for carving. However, certain varieties are better for cooking. These include the Buckskin, Chelsey, Dickinson Field, and Kentucky Field. It is possible for the home gardener to grow pumpkins. It may take a few tries, but the results can be worth it if pumpkins eventually form. Keep in mind that although pumpkin plants will produce several flowers throughout the life of the plant, a person can expect only one to two actual pumpkins per vine. Pumpkin plants naturally produce separate male and female flowers on the same plant for pollination. Pumpkin plants should be watered, but only the roots, in the early morning or during the day for good health. Wet leaves can lead to mildew. Later-day

watering may result in powdery mildew, a blight that can form and spread quickly. Bugs are another problem that may destroy a pumpkin plant. The cucumber beetle is a carrier of plant disease. Of course, if growing pumpkins seems too much work, a trip to a local pumpkin patch is a good excursion for families. Pumpkins ripen at the end of summer into early fall. However, it

fun in the swimming pool. I can’t wait until Uncle Michael comes over again so we can play in the swimming pool again next summer. I stood on top of Uncle Michael’s shoulder and then splashed in the water! Having fun! Misty Dvorak, age 7 —SPJST—

could be best to wait until later in the season to pick a pumpkin because a picked or carved pumpkin won’t last forever. And most people will want to be sure their pumpkin is on proud display for Halloween. (MS) —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Bay City High School Band performed at a marching contest this past weekend in El Campo. We had to put together a new program in just a week because we lost some students at the last minute. We scored twos but we

worked hard so we were happy. Maybe next year we will do better. Your friend, Dylan Treumer —SPJST—

Blacksmithʼs craft showcased at West Bohemian international symposium

The charming and historic West Bohemian town of Bečov nad Teplou has just hosted its third international symposium showcasing the blacksmith’s craft. The two-day event gave the public the chance to get up close and feel the heat of the braziers as a series of top smiths showed that this is very much a craft making a comeback.

The sound of metal on metal together with the more modern mechanical sound of an electrically powered hammer that substitutes some of the muscle power of the smith could be heard in Bečov last weekend and down the Tepla valley. The sound would have been familiar in the not so long ago age when horses had not been replaced by horsepower and almost every village would have had a blacksmith. A few decades ago the craft looked like it had almost died out in the Czech Republic. But now as the Bečov symposium testifies, this is a craft that has come back from the brink and can pull in a lot of public interest. The national association of Czech blacksmiths has around 350 members. Ivo Rudolf who lives in the next village downriver of Bečov and has been a blacksmith for the last 30 years is the organiser of the symposium. He got into the profession first of all as a blacksmith mending farm machinery. His more recent artistic craftsmanship can be spotted frequently around a town dominated by a medieval castle and baroque chateau. The work of other smiths was also on show at an al fresco exhibition under the arches of the bridge leading to the baroque chateau: “This is the third international symposium and nearly all of Europe is represented here. There is Germany, Ukraine, Slovakia, France and also Japan.”

When it started three years ago there were a lot of Czechs, but just a token presence from Slovakia and France. Representatives are mostly prize winners in their field who have

Page 21

been invited to take part in what is very much a showcase event. This year, there was a record attendance at the symposium of 53 blacksmiths:

“We do this to raise the profile of the craft of the blacksmith which was almost forgotten not so long ago so that it has the recognition that it deserves. This is a craft which has a future, the craft today has a new lease of life. When you do good work, with the help of exhibitions and actions of that sort, it is very popular.”

One of the younger professionals participating was Jiří Oplt from around 50 kilometres away in the engineering and metal bashing west Bohemian city of Plzeň. I spoke to him after they had just finished a two hour session fashioning a work of art out of a steel bar. I asked what the finished piece was meant to be:

“This piece of work has not got a title. It is more or less a fantastical piece. We originally wanted to fashion an angel out of iron but we stylised it so much that it might just now be a wing, but it could still be a stylised angel.” Jiří Oplt says that he decided to become a blacksmith although there was no such tradition in the family, and there is no likelihood that it will make him rich quick.: “I think that this is the sort of work which if you enjoy and do it properly and well, then you can make a living out of it. But it is not the kind of work that will make you wealthy.”

He and a grouping of other blacksmiths from the city contributed to its successful bid to be in the European spotlight in 2015 as the joint European city of culture that year along with the Belgian city of Mons: “I am a member of a Plzeň grouping, or rather the Plzeň regional association of craft blacksmiths. As far as re-

cent craftsmanship, we made the logo which was used for the campaign to be the European City of Culture in 2015. Plzeň got the title and this was very interesting work.”

Organizer Ivo Rudolf has been followed into the profession by his son. And he is pretty upbeat about the future for blacksmiths.: “The craft is developing. Of course we have just been hit by the economic crisis which has left a mark, but a good craftsman always finds a way. There are young people here, you can see some young blacksmiths here. But this sort of symposium is really for seasoned smiths that have been invited to take part.” His preparations for the fourth symposium in 2011 are already underway.
