SPJST and the City of Killeen unveiled the artist’s rendering of the design for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial on Friday, November 5 at 4:30 p.m. in the tract of land between the Killeen Civic and Conference Center, located at 3601 S. WS Young Drive, and Shilo Inn and Suites. Patriot Guard Riders proudly outlined the area while United States flags waved in the autumn breeze under sunny, blue skies. One year has passed since gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood. Thirteen people were killed and 32 were wounded. Thanks to the heroic intervention of Fort Hood police officers Sgts. Kimberly Munley and Mark Todd, the rampage was brought to an end. The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones or who had recently returned

Holiday with Parents Thanks to Roy Belz of Lodge 29, Taylor for sharing this: A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York and says, “I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; 45 years of misery is enough.” “Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man says. “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call

your sister in Chicago and tell her,” and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like thunder they’re getting divorced,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.” She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at the old man, “You are not getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing. Do you hear me?” And, she hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone, too, and turns to his wife. “Okay,” he says, “they’re coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way.”

Fort Hood Memorial

Continued from Page 1.

from them. On the afternoon of November 5, 2009, 13 Americans were sacrificed for their country — not on the distant soils of Iraq or Afghanistan — but down the road in Fort Hood, Texas. In the aftermath of this tragic event, memorial services were held to pay tribute to those who had died or who had been injured. From that initial outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event came the concept of establishing a permanent public and living memorial. The idea for establishing the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial was conceived by SPJST State Field Representative Hiram Dixon of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. Mr. Dixon served in the U.S. Army from 1969 until 1972, during which time he completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. Working as partners with the City of Killeen, Texas and Killeen Volunteers, Inc., SPJST is spearheading efforts in the public and private sector to build the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. The site will serve to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. Throughout the spring and summer months of 2010, great efforts were made by an ad-hoc committee designated by City of Killeen Mayor Timothy Hancock to determine the exact name, location, design and budget for the project. As approved by the Killeen City Council on June 8, the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial, designed by Salado artist Troy Kelley, will include a memorial pavilion and garden on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Killeen area builder and civic supporter Don Farek of SPJST Lodge 35, Elk is pro-

viding oversight for the project’s construction. More than 500 people attended the program on Friday, November 5 to witness the unveil of artist Troy Kelley’s design. SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek opened the program on Friday, November 5 by introducing Boy Scouts of America Longhorn Council — Mattison Parker and Allen Hilton of Pack 201, Matt Glennon and Adrian Bogart of Troop 287, and Michael Swader and Alyssa Salisbury of Ship 255 who posted the colors. State Field Representative Dixon led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by an invocation by U.S. Army Colonel (Ret.) Chaplain Wilfred Brewster. Mayor Hancock welcomed all who attended the program. President Vanicek explained the background of the project. State Field Representative Dixon shared his concept for the memorial. He got the idea while eating lunch one day after the shooting. He drew an initial sketch of 13 trees and a gazebo on a napkin. His vision is that the memorial will be a place where healing can occur. He presented a United States flag that was flown over Afghanistan on July 4, 2010, on a combat mission to Joleen Cahill, wife of Michael G. Cahill. Mr. Cahill was among the 13 people killed in the shooting rampage. The flag will fly atop the memorial after it is constructed. The design was then unveiled by Mrs. Cahill, Mayor Hancock, Mr. Kelley, and Mr. Dixon. Mr. Kelley explained some of the concepts he incorporated into the memorial’s design. Thirteen blackgranite columns will surround the memorial, each with a bronze sculpture depicting an object selected by the victims’ families to represent their lost loved ones. Each column will have engraved photos of the victims and will include a personal message or poem from each family. A moment of silence in memory of our fallen heroes was then observed.

Leila Hunt-Willingham, sister of SPC Jason Dean Hunt, stated: “One year ago today, dozens of lives were forever changed. I think a lot of us have been apprehensive about this ‘anniversary,’ because it seems impossible to think there is anything to celebrate. Some of us wish that we could forget about the horror of November 5th all together. But because of this community, SPJST, and patriots who have supported the victims of the November 5th shooting, we do have something to celebrate. Rather than focus on the deaths and the wounds and the pain from that day, this memorial helps shift the focus to the lives and the healing and the gratitude we have for those who died, those who were wounded, and those who witnessed and responded to the shooting. “The last year has been one of the hardest years a person can endure for those directly affected by this tragedy. However, I know personally that it lessens the pain a little when someone says something kind or appreciative toward the sacrifice that our family members have made, or vows to remember their names. This memorial is a beautiful way to acknowledge those who gave their lives that day. “Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for remembering November 5, 2009, and for the hard work and dedication in creating a place to honor the 13 incredible heroes that died one year ago. There will be 13 empty seats at the Thanksgiving dinner table each year because of 11/5/09. But thanks to you, Thanksgiving dinner could possibly be a picnic in this garden, under a tree that lives in place of the loved one we will never see in this life again. Thank you for reminding us that we can indeed

celebrate this day because 13 people lived, not because they died. “Nothing can erase the event that has forever changed our lives. Our scars will forever be present. But creating this haven only a few miles away from the place of the tragedy is a poignant way of reminding us to turn our eyes from the sadness, to the things we can cling to in our darkest hour, which is the love and support of this grateful nation. Thank you for demonstrating this to us and for vowing to remember the heroes from Fort Hood last November.”

Boy Scouts of America then retired the colors. Following the ceremony, kolaches were served. The initial response to the memorial project has been gratifying as veterans groups, businesses and civic organizations have been stepping up to donate or pledge support. Already, more than $70,000 has been raised. The unveiling ceremony marks the start of a sixmonth fundraising campaign in the public and private sector to generate the remaining portion of the $500,000 that will be needed to bring the project to completion. This amount includes an endowment to be established from the funds collected to provide for the maintenance and upkeep of the memorial and garden. If you would like to contribute fundraising support or host a fund raising event, please contact the SPJST Home Office (800) 727-7578. Tax-deductible donations may be made payable to: Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial c/o SPJST Home Office P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100

Lillie Zajicek led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Ms. Lillie, as she is affectionately known, continues in her full support and dedication to the lodge. A moment of silence was observed for those who are ill and for the departed member. Work schedules and vacations prevented two officers from attending. Vice President Scott Brandon’s position was chaired by Adolph Jurca, and Secretary Dorothy Tomascik’s position was chaired by Frank Klinkovsky who read the minutes. Sandie Fischer presented the treasurer’s report and motions carried on both reports to accept as given. Joe Kopriva made motions to accept, and seconds were made by Lillie Zajicek and Lamerle Zajicek. Visiting brother Frank Klinkovsky whom we respect so much of his supportive role gave us a brief summary of

the Fort Hood Memorial activities and the Czech Heritage Museum’s preparation for a Veterans Day display on November 11. Brother Frank keeps us in the loop on special activities that we often cannot attend. Appreciation to Laverne who keeps this man on track. Considerable time was spent on discussion and audience participation on

one aspect of old business relating to the methods of displaying paver bricks and paver stones for the restoration fundraising project. ture construction as a lasting memory in time, and appointments will be made with Brian Vanicek at the SPJST Home Office and Steph McDougal, Architectural History Project Manager. The Historical Commission has suggested that we mail a request to each member of this lodge seeking a small gift to support restoration efforts. This step is necessary in foundation funding to know that all the members are on board and agree to the historical value of this lodge building. Prior to closing, President Williams gave special recognition and thanks to Adolph Jurca for his work efforts at meetings and his assistance in helping members and to Arthur and Regina Peevey who contribute their time and support for events helping the lodge to stay lively and progressive. Motions to close the meeting were made by Joe Kopriva and Hilda Burtis. By the way, Hilda was alternate judge at the election last week and proudly proclaimed that at 95, she is looking forwards to the 2012 elections. 2009 deductions up until the return due date in 2010. In order for a distribution to qualify as a lump sum distribution, 100 percent of the balance to the credit of the employee must be distributed in one taxable year. If you have retired this year, make sure that you received (or will receive by year-end) everything you have coming under your former employer’s qualified retirement plan. Charitable Contributions —Many people make their annual charitable contributions during the holidays. If you’re going to make a cash contribution, mail the check by December 31, 2009 to qualify for a 2010 deduction. Giving a personal note or I.O.U. to the charity won’t qualify for a deduction; but, donating with a credit card does. Making gifts of securities is a very effective way to make charitable contributions. Charities are happy to receive odd lots. Donations of long-term capital gain property are deductible based on fair market value. It doesn’t make sense to donate shortterm capital gain property; your deduction will be limited to your basis. Also, it doesn’t make sense to donate securities with losses; sell the stock and donate the cash. To claim a 2008 deduction, the security must actually be transferred to the charity before December 31, 2010. Check in with your financial planner near the end of the year to see what deadlines and opportunities apply to your particular financial situation.

Last Minute Tax Tips

Here’s a potpourri of rules and ideas that are important for year-end planning. Securities Sales—To realize a gain or loss in 2010, the trade date must occur on or before December 31, 2010. Settlement date is irrelevant for publicly traded James L. Lee, III securities. The limit on the deduction of capital losses in excess of capital gains is $3,000. Any net capital losses in excess of $3,000 are carried over into 2011. Both short- and long-term losses are counted on a dollar-fordollar basis. A few years ago, longterm losses were worth only $.50 on the $1. No longer. The holding period to achieve a long-term capital gain or loss is now more than twelve months. Count the period from trade date to trade date. Whether a gain is short- or long-term does make a difference. The date a long-term gain is realized also makes a difference. In general, net shortterm gains are subject to a 35 percent maximum rate, while net long-term gains are taxed at a maximum of 15 percent. However, some gains may be subject to a 25 or 28 percent rate, such as gains on the sale of art or collectibles and gains on certain depreciated real property. Retirement Plans —If you are a calendar year taxpayer, the deadline for establishing a qualified retirement plan for deductions against 2010 income is December 31, 2010. The contribution need not be made until the tax filing deadline of the taxpayer’s return. Note; however, that a SEP plan can still be established for

their age. An older male is preferable to a younger male, because the young “tom” is stringy. Conversely, younger female hens are preferred to older ones.

• A turkey less than 16 weeks old is called a fryer. An older turkey between five and seven months of age is known as a roaster. • Turkeys are a type of pheasant. They are the only breed of poultry native to the Western Hemisphere.

District Youth Counselors gathered on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at the LaQuinta in Brownwood for their semi-annual meeting. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Participates in Czech Feszt

Dear Readers, I had a fun time at Czech Feszt in Temple. We danced the beseda and did “The Chicken Dance!” My sister Macy and my cousin Tabor participated in the Czech Feszt pag-

• Wild turkeys are able to fly for short durations and up to 55 mph. However, domesticated turkeys raised on farms for food are bred to be fat and meaty, which prevents their ability to get airborne.

• The turkey is no exception to other birds. Sometimes it likes to spend the night in trees.

• Benjamin Franklin was one person who argued vehemently on behalf of the turkey being the national symbol of America. However, as most know, the bald eagle won out. • The first turkeys to domesticated were from Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, the turkey was a sacrificial bird.

• Male turkeys make the commonly known “gobble” sound, particularly during breeding seasons to attract a mate. Females, however, cluck.

• A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers. That’s a lot of plucking to do before the bird can be eaten. • Minnesota and North Carolina produce the most turkeys for sale annually.

• The skin that hangs from a turkey’s neck is known as a wattle. The fleshy growth on the base of the beak is known as the snood.

How are 3D movies and video games affecting your eyes?

secret, and the record number of 3D films that hit movie theaters and Bluray players every month is helping satisfy our cinematic appetite, transforming entertainment into a super sensory experience. But as 3D continues to make its mark on our culture, many of us are asking what impact it is having on our eyes? Moreover, not everyone can even view 3D effects, say experts. Some 3D viewers have found themselves experiencing eye strain, headaches, or even nausea while watching 3D movies. While some attribute this to the 3D imagery, it’s actually more likely that the person may have an undiagnosed vision problem. “About five percent of the population can’t perceive 3D because they’re monocular, which means they only

use one eye to see,” says Dr. Roger Phelps, a private practice VSP Vision Care optometrist based in Ojai, California. “Another 25 percent of the population has borderline binocular vision, meaning they can use both eyes to perceive 3D, but it’s difficult for them because their eyes may not be working in synch together.” 3D movies present two different images on screen, separated by a certain distance to enhance the perception of depth. Without 3D glasses — which filter the light and present different images to each eye — the scene on screen looks blurry and unclear. And if either eye is not in excellent focus, or if the eyes have a tendency to misalign with each other, it may be difficult for that person to enjoy a 3D film. So what’s a 3D fan with less-than-

19

perfect eye coordination to do? The first step is to visit your eye doctor, who will first make sure that both of your eyes are in the best possible focus. If you still have problems even with your best glasses, the doctor may recommend treatment with vision therapy — a series of special techniques that help you learn how to better coordinate your eyes. You can even seek out an optometrist specializing in binocular vision therapy. Some of the techniques used in vision therapy include extended viewing of 3D images. While this can cause fatigue, temporary nausea and headaches, longer viewing times and special glasses can actually provide more comfort and enjoyment for the 3D viewing experience. Seeing your eye doctor can help determine any underlying causes of problems, and best ways to treat the issue so you can enjoy all that 3D has to offer. To find an eye doctor near you, visit vsp.com. As for the rest of us, Dr. Phelps recommends common sense when deciding how much 3D viewing is too much. While a two-hour movie might be fine at first, over three hours is more likely to cause temporary eye strain for many viewers. —SPJST—

Phrasebook

Czech is a Slavic language, closely related to Slovak and Polish. Spoken by over 10 million people as a first language and at least six million who use it as a second language (mainly in Slovakia), Czech is one of two official and defacto languages of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech belongs to the “synthetic” language group, which means that unlike English and other “analytical” languages, different grammatical aspects are expressed in one word by changing the structure of that word adding an ending or prefix, modifying the core of the word, etc. In analytical languages such as English, the same is achieved by using separate auxiliary verbs, pronouns or adjectives while the actual word remains unchanged. In Czech, one word is often sufficient to express what English can only achieve by using multiple words. The accent doesn’t mean a vowel is stressed. It means it’s long. The stress usually falls on the first syllable, with the exception of foreign (non-Slavic) words. Source: http://wikitravel.org/en/Czech_phrasebook

A festival kids can see, feel, smell

As the school year begins, an uncommon sort of festival for children kicks off on Prague’s ancient hill of Vyšehrad. “Vyšehrátky”, as it’s called, a romp on the old high castle, offers no cotton candy, no tedious clowns, and no mind-numbing kiddie rides. Instead, it brings in schools and families for a more avant-garde approach to children’s entertainment organized by students of the Academy of Drama. In this week’s Panorama, Christian Falvey found that they know how to please a young audience.

Filip Jevič: “I am the author of the festival and the Vyšehrátky project. We started the festival for adults seven years ago, but it was not so well-de-

fined; we were using puppets, paintings, and so on. More and more, we did things for children, and in these things, we were combining games, art, and education. Then we decided to turn the main festival activity towards the children and their parents.”

“We’ve got something that is special to Vyšehratky, and that’s interactive objects. This year, these interactive objects are about the senses. You can play with these objects on your own, you can play with them with our actors, or, of course, with the whole family. “The smelling table as an example —what are the smells, what do they remind us of? What are the differences between the smells from nature and those made in the factory? And so on. So this is the point of the whole festival—enjoy time with your family and with our ideas.” Martina Moudrá: “At one tent, there will be another very well-known attraction called “Save Prague from the Nazis.” When children enter the tent, they get a candle, and there is an actor who is playing a Nazi and is trying to blow out their candles. So we hope it will be as popular as last year.

“We are trying to connect art, education, and play; with games and art, we are trying to educate children, and that’s the point of this attraction as well, and we hope it’s working. We’ll see.”

In another tent, there is the hungry table — part toy, part unintentional modern art piece, and about 15 children spending this part of their busy afternoon stuffing its many mouths with marbles, and they seem to have little intention of doing anything else for the time being. That’s just one of the exhibits in this “lounge of the senses”, which Miss Moudrá showed before the kids came to mob the tents and tepees.: “So this

Page 21

exhibit is about your eyes, about different perspectives. One item called hlavouň is a helmet you can put on your head, and you can see the world not like it is. You will see the world as if through a kaleidoscope.” There’s kind of like a slightly grotesque feel to a lot of the things at the festival. Filip Jevič: “We like to communicate with children about themes that we think are important for children and for adults. So this is our main principle for communicating and working with children.”

Ondřej Liška, 33, former Minister of Education and head of the Czech Green Party came to the festival to sit

cross-legged in a tepee to read to a group of children in the part of the programme called Fairy Tales of Famous Daddies.: “I think it’s a great idea, and I was very happy to support this little festival. You see all over the world, even in developed countries, a

lack of interest in books, and reading out loud. And this is a problem categorized as čtenářská gramotnost, the ability to read, understand, and interpret texts . . . so I am always happy to join in any way to support reading books and listening to fairytales. I chose a book that loved as a child very, very much — Tove Jansson’s book about the Moomins. The Moomins are little beings living somewhere in the mountains of Scandinavia, and they are very small, neat animals, or beings. I loved it as a child, and I hope the children will love it too.” — Christan Falvey

All Souls Day in Czech Republic

All Souls Day - the day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed away - has great significance in the Czech Republic. Czechs visit cemeteries across the country to lay flowers and light candles at the graves of their relatives and loved ones. Dusicky - or "Souls" - as it is called is an annual pilgrimage that has taken place since pagan times.

21

Whole families pay their respects to the dead - leading young children by the hand and telling them what it is all about. In this way, the tradition has been perpetuated for centuries. On November 2, cemeteries are left awash with flowers and flickering candles. This spiritual holiday has deep roots. On the eve of All Souls Day, I took a turn around the Czech Republic's most famous cemetery Vysehrad the resting place of many Czech greats - including composers Antonin Dvorak and Bedrich Smetana, writers Karel Capek and Jan Neruda or opera diva Emma Destinova. Anna Cermakova explained that while she visited the family grave regularly Dusicky was always special. Although Anna tended mainly to her family grave, she had brought a few candles to put on the graves of the Czech greats whom she admires: “A tour of the cemetery with many brief stops is part of this special day. And I always stop to pour water into a stone bird bath that's on Karel Capek's grave. You see in some interview, he once said he had seen this on his travels around Italy and how he, too, would like birds to come to his grave for a drink. So I and a few friends always keep it filled for him.” Marie, 80, hopes that Halloween will never replace All Souls Day in the Czech calendar. “I think that the tradition of Dusicky is very strong, and I hope that respect for our ancestors will keep it alive. As for Halloween - well, why not. We can adopt this Celtic tradition as well, especially since children seem to like it so much. But I would be very sorry to see it replace our own tradition of Dusicky.” — Daniela Lazarová http://www.radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/all-souls-day-in-the-czechrepublic; 02-11-2006 14:12; Český rozhlas 7 - Radio Praha, Vinohradská 12, 120 99 Praha 2, Česká Republika; 1996–2010 Český rozhlas.
