SPJST Sponsors Texas Polka Music Museum’s Bands of Texas, Volume 3

SPJST is the proud sponsor of Texas Polka Music Museum (TPMM) newest CD: Bands of Texas, Vol. 3. TPMM announced the release recently, and like Volumes 1 and 2, Volume 3 is a compilation of 16 bands with more than 50 minutes of music played by Texas polka bands who have graciously donated the music. Some recordings are from current CDs; others are from LP and 78 rpm records. Volume 3 also has three live recordings. Czech, German, and Polish polkas and waltzes, vocals, and instrumental tunes are included. “We are always in need of more music donations for future volumes,” TPMM President and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone member Glen Chervenka

says. “The Bands of Texas collections are a way of preserving music and the bands’ history for the future and to finance the museum.” On both Volumes 2 and 3, a polka disc jockey introduces each song. The disc jockey for Volume 3 is SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis member Johnnie I. Krajca, who has been a polka DJ in the Ennis area since 1964. As a finale song, the CD includes a live recording of the Vrazels’ Polka Band’s “If I Were a Bird Polka.” This was the last song played at the Vrazels’ retirement dance held in January 2009 in Temple and also sponsored by SPJST. Volume 3 is dedicated to the mem-

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, dear Vestnik readers! As we celebrate this

season of thankfulness, may your Thanksgiving be filled with peace, family, bountiful blessings, and delicious food. Thank you for your loyalty and support. And, thank you for your membership in SPJST.

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” —Melody Beattie

“What we’re really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?” —Erma Bombeck “A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.” —Cicero

Christmas Floats As of this writing, the floats are just about ready for the Christmas parade season. One Christmas float debuted last Saturday in Tomball. Both floats will venture to Fort Worth this Friday, November 26 for the city’s annual parade at 6:30 p.m. The floats will also be appearing in: El Campo - December 2 at 7 p.m. Cleburne - December 3 at 7 p.m. Lockhart - December 3 at 7:30 p.m. Georgetown - December 4 at 12 noon Burleson - December 4 at 6 p.m. Smithville - December 4 at 7 p.m. Temple - December 6 at 6:30 p.m. Bay City - December 7 at 7 p.m. Arlington - December 11 at 6 p.m. Crosby - December 11 at 3 p.m.

And, it’s never too early to book the float for 2011. I am starting to get bookings so if your lodge would like

to reserve the float sometime next year for a parade in your community, give me a call or send me an email. We have two floats, and they are booked on a first come, first served basis. Parades are fun and are great promotion for your lodge and SPJST! Lodge Christmas Parties Lodges across Texas will be celebrating Christmas with parties, socials, and dinners. We have received many notices about these exciting events that will be happening in the next few weeks. See the listing on page 3 and all of the articles in the lodge section. Be sure to attend your lodge’s Christmas party. Thanks to the members who are responsible for any aspect of these special events. Best wishes for a day of success and fun. Sincere Sympathy We extend sincere sympathy to the family of Darlene Engelke who passed away Tuesday, November 16. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 20. Darlene was a member of Lodge 66, Waco and served as chairman of the Credentials Committee at the past 10 conventions since 1972. May she rest in peace.

Correction Lodge 6, Cottonwood member Al Soukup was incorrectly listed in the Veterans Tribute that was published in the November 10, 2010, Vestnik. Mr. Soukup served in the United States Army. We regret the error. Thanks, Mr. Soukup for your service.

The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 42 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Krivanek who welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and Vice President Betty Krenek read a poem “Greatest Artist of All.” Joe Kozel was thanked for the great music before the meeting. The minutes from the last meeting were read by Elizabeth Creamer, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Secretary Elizabeth reported that our master chefs for November were Mary Ann Krivanek who baked a turkey and made all the dressing and Mary Ann Kozel who baked a turkey and made the huge pot of gravy. Both donated their turkeys. Special thanks went out to both of our Mary Ann’s. Your contributions were very tasty and enjoyed by all. Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported on sending get well cards to Joe Kozel and Mary Ann Ward who had eye surgery and to Marie Keller who had surgery. Lydia Alholm was

thanked for providing Christmas cards, and it was further reported that Betty Landsfeld will be having knee surgery on November 30. Let’s all remember to send her a card. Willie Mae also reported on her visit at Manor Care with Agnes Reznicek where she found Agnes playing dominoes. Agnes seems to be doing well. Christmas cards were signed for our shut-in members. Historian Rose Ann Spann reported the photo albums for 2009 and 2010 were completed, and everyone enjoyed looking at them. Lydia Alholm suggested the albums prepared by Annie Whitsell from past years be brought out each month for viewing. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to November celebrants — Elizabeth Creamer, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, Merel Kovar, Jacqueline Phillips, and Mary Agnes Ward. May you all have many more. President Mary Ann reported that our Christmas hostesses will be Lupe Esparza, Tom Konen, Mary Jean Loy, Rosie Steinman, and Mary Jean Loy. If members wish, they can bring a $5 gift to exchange. The Christmas luncheon was discussed. Jo Ann Wilcox will bring the ham, and Betty Krenek will pick up roasted chicken from Sam’s. It is the practice of the Club to pay for the meat served at holiday luncheons and for the fried chicken for regular monthly meetings. Rose Ann reported for the nominating committee and made the motion that the existing officers be elected to served for the ensuing year. Motion was seconded. The following were elected to serve for the year 2010: President Mary Ann Krivanek; Vice President Betty Krenek; Secretary Elizabeth Creamer; Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel. The president then appointed the following committee persons: Sunshine Person Paula Hall; Historian Rose Ann Spann; Dollar Games Stanley Krenek; and Reporter Libbie Vrla. Stanley Krenek handled the 50/50 dollar game with winners being Anna Johnson and Mary Ann Windham. Door prizes were donated by Paula Arsenault, Alene Kercho, Rosie Steinman, and Rose Ann Spann. Winners were Ann Connor, Betty Krenek, Marilyn Llewellyn, Mary Jean Loy, Darlene Tompkins, and Jo Ann Wilcox. Again, I have more winners than donors. Please, help me next time if you donated a gift. We had three members bring their crafts, and everyone enjoyed shopping before and after the meeting.

November hostesses Paula Arsenault, Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, and Rose Ann Spann were thanked for a great job. Table decorations carried out the Thanksgiving theme which looked very nice. Following the meeting, grace was said and a great luncheon was enjoyed. This was the first turkey, dressing, and gravy of the season for most of us, and we certainly enjoyed every bite. Following, games were played.

News Paula Arsenault was back with us following her two months vacation in Germany. She said that she enjoyed her visit with family, but that it was already cold there, and she was glad to be back in warm Texas. Lydia Alholm and I went to visit Shirley Zich this past Friday who will be having a birthday on November 22; she will be 61 years old. Shirley lives at Sunrise Assisted Living, 6151 Bryant Irvin Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76123 and seems to be doing well. She seemed glad to see Lydia who was a longtime friend of her parents Carl and Christine Zich and planted a big kiss on Lydia’s check. This home is very lovely and homey, and her room was all decorated in bright colors. All the help spoke highly of Shirley and said Shirley enjoys receiving cards, loves flowers, and enjoys Czech music. Her parents Carl and Christine were loyal members and supporters of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. I attended the homecoming football game at Ennis High School the other day. The game didn’t turn out good, but my niece Calleigh Morales was runner-up out of 12 nominees for homecoming queen. Congratulations, Calleigh, I’m so proud of you. The next meeting will be December 1. Don’t forget your gift to exchange and dish to complement ham or roasted chicken for lunch. Happy Thanksgiving to all! So until, keep smiling! The gift of volunteerism for the holidays

Donating is a popular way to show appreciation during the holiday season, but not every household has the funds to donate this year. In lieu of making a financial donation, a gift of time and service is just as valuable. Research indicates that 50 percent of charitable donations are made between Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the season of hospitality and togetherness, making charitable donations is ever-present in many people’s minds. However, financial insecurity due to the sluggish job market and economy will likely result in more people hoping to volunteer their time instead of their finances this holiday season. Volunteering one’s time is a way to give back without expending funds. Just as charities and other organizations are in need of money to operate their causes, they also need manpower to put plans in action. Busy people may think they don’t have the time to volunteer, but this is not the case. According to Charity Guide, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting flexible volunteerism by inspiring and facilitating acts of kindness, volunteer work can take as little as 15 minutes per week and be based on a flexible schedule. When considering volunteerism, individuals can pick a cause that is

dear to their hearts. Organizations that raise awareness about medical conditions to animal rights groups are all charities that can use assistance. Here are some ways the average person can volunteer service.

• Business owners who provide a particular product or service can donate such items to the charity. For example, a printing company can offer to print letterhead or envelopes for an organization. A baker can offer food for luncheons or fundraisers. Donation of time doesn’t necessarily have to mean manning the phones.

• Schools are often understaffed and can use the help of parents and other community members. Volunteering beyond the typical call of duty can help school programs flourish. Volunteering time as a coach or as a librarian can ensure children have the resources and programs for a well-rounded education. • Consider spending time with the elderly at a nearby assisted-living facility or as part of a home-visitor program. Individuals who don’t have family nearby may appreciate a visit from someone, even if it’s just to sit and chat. This is something the entire family can do, even children.

• Something as simple as carpooling or offering to shop for busy people is another form of volunteer work that doesn’t require being part of a particular organization. Why not babysit for a person who has to catch up on some holiday shopping?

There are plenty of ways to contribute without writing a check. The holiday season is the perfect time of year to think in a giving way. (MS) —SPJST—

Traditional IRAs: Still a Good Idea for 2010 By James L. Lee, III, CPA

Mark Twain once said, “The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Like Mr. Twain’s rumored demise, the notion that the traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is no longer a useful part of a financial plan has been greatly exaggerated. Contributions to a traditional IRA continue to be a James L. Lee, III viable financial and retirement planning tool despite non-deductibility for some individuals. All you need to make a traditional IRA contribution are earnings as an employee or as a self-employed person. The amount that can be contributed for 2010 is the lesser of $5,000 ($6,000 if you have attained age 50) or your earnings from your work. There is no minimum age for making a traditional IRA contribution for tax purposes. If a 16-year-old works for the summer, makes $5,000, and blows it all at the mall, the tax code permits Mom, Dad, or whomever to give him/her $5,000 to contribute to a traditional IRA on his behalf. There is a maximum age for IRA contributions. No traditional IRA contributions may be made for people over 70 1/2, even if they are still working as hard as they were at 30 1/2. An additional contribution of $5,000 is permitted if the traditional IRA participant has a spouse who doesn’t work outside the home. If both spouses are under age 50, the total contribution in this situation is $10,000 and the spouses can divide the amount contributed up any way they choose, so long as neither receives more than $5,000 into his/her account. The question of deductibility is often confusing to many taxpayers. There are two questions that may have to be answered to determine if a traditional IRA contribution is fully deductible, partially deductible or not deductible. The first question is: “Are you covered by a plan?” If the answer is “no,” then the traditional IRA contribution is deductible regardless of the taxpayer’s income. Whether or not you

are covered by a plan depends on the type of employer-sponsored plan in place. If you’re not sure, your employer can tell you because employers must check a box on every employee’s W-2 stating whether they are covered. If the answer is “yes” and you are covered by a plan but your spouse is not, then only you are exposed to the next test. Your spouse’s contribution to a traditional IRA is fully deductible up to new phase-out limits of $167,000 to $177,000 of joint income. If both of you are covered by a plan then the next test will determine to what extent both of you can deduct your contributions. Assuming coverage by a plan, the next question that must be answered is: “How much is your income?” For 2010, taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) of $56,000/89,000 (single/married filing jointly) or less, the contribution is fully deductible. For taxpayers with AGI over $66,000/$109,000 (single/married filing jointly), no IRA deduction is permitted. For those with an AGI between those levels, the amount of the deduction is phased out proportionately. There is a $500 floor to the deduction that will apply to those whose AGI is close to the upper limit. For example, a single person who is covered by an employer’s plan has an AGI (excluding the IRA deduction) of $61,000. Since that’s 50% of the way from $56,000 to $66,000, the taxpayer may deduct $2,500 of a $5,000 contribution ($5,000 * 50%). The other $2,500 of the contribution is non-deductible. The best part of the traditional IRA deal is the tax-deferred growth potential your investments can enjoy inside the account. Your earnings will grow much faster when not dragged down by the weight of a current tax bill. Your financial planner can show you whether and how a traditional IRA can fit into your retirement plan. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by James L Lee, III, CPA, Wealth Advisor of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC. —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club to give to Toys for Tots

Dear Readers, With the holidays approaching quickly, we have a lot of stuff to get together in a short amount of time. The youth club decided to donate gifts to Toys for Tots this year instead of having a gift exchange party. I really think that is a sign of caring, mature, and giving children. I am so proud of this decision that I am just beside myself. If anyone would like to help us out, please feel free to contact me or come by the hall at our next meeting to donate to this cause. We will practice for our Christmas play at the next meeting. Then, we will enjoy chips, dip, sandwiches, and, of course, dessert. Lodge 47, Seaton will be running the face painting booth at the SPJST Home Office Open House on Monday, December 6. We are so excited about being a part of this! If you can paint faces that night after the parade, please give me a call. On December 21, we will be dropping off the canned goods we collected for Make a Difference Day at CTLC. Then, we will go caroling at some of the local nursing homes. When you all are tired and hungry, we will then go have some pizza and drinks! I will have the details at our next meeting. If you are a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and would like to attend a meeting or find out about what your kids are missing out on, please feel free to give me a call (254) 9310639 or email lynette.talasek@sbcglobal.net. together, but it can be difficult to find activities that each family member will enjoy. The baseball fan might not be interested in an upcoming art exhibit, and an art enthusiast might not want to spend all day in a stadium. So, what can families do to come together in a meaningful, interesting way? Families might want to consider learning musical instruments together. According to a 2009 Gallup poll conducted by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), 85 percent of the Americans who do not play musical instruments wish that they did. And there are plenty of reasons for playing instruments beyond family

bonding. Studies show that babies prefer singing to talking — they pay more attention to mom’s singing than her words. Babies who are sung to sleep also show better development than those who are not. Toddlers enjoy exposure to new songs and singing as part of playtime, and they are never too young to start playing an instrument. Children who study music develop discipline and the ability to solve problems, communicate and work cooperatively. A Columbia University study revealed that students studying the arts are more cooperative and selfconfident, and better able to express ideas. Children develop new skills quickly, too. One study found that kids

learning music for just one year increased their ability to memorize information. These benefits don’t disappear as children grow up. Teenagers report that playing instruments helps them cope with loss, peer pressure, and academic stress. Among working adults over age 45, recreational music making has been proven to reduce stress and ease depression. Buying musical instruments and arranging music lessons can create a common bond between family members and provide memories to last a lifetime. Phrasebook

Czech is a Slavic language, closely related to Slovak and Polish. Spoken by over 10 million people as a first language and at least six million who use it as a second language (mainly in Slovakia), Czech is one of two official and defacto languages of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech belongs to the “synthetic” language group, which means that unlike English and other “analytical” languages, different grammatical aspects are expressed in one word by changing the structure of that word adding an ending or prefix, modifying the core of the word, etc. In analytical languages such as English, the same is achieved by using separate auxiliary verbs, pronouns or adjectives while the actual word remains unchanged. In Czech, one word is often sufficient to express what English can only achieve by using multiple words. The accent doesn’t mean a vowel is stressed. It means it’s long. The stress usually falls on the first syllable, with the exception of foreign (non-Slavic) words. Source: http://wikitravel.org/en/Czech_phrasebook
