SPJST Welcomes Christmas Season

With Thoughts of You at Christmas As the holiday season approaches, our hearts are warmed by thoughts of the many good people we’ve had the opportunity to serve this year. You’ve certainly brightened our year! Thank you for your support and loyalty. We look forward to seeing you in the new year.

George’s Generosity Gives Gifts

Thanks to SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point member George Brown for his donation of almost 100 stuffed animals to a local children’s charity for the holidays. George has collected more than 500 stuffed animals in the past three years and donated them to children’s charities for the Christmas season. Hats off to George for his giving spirit.

The Greatest Gift

Many years ago in Bethlehem God’s greatest gift was given to men The star of Bethlehem beamed its light Over a stable in the dark of night.

There in the manger, Baby Jesus lay Wrapped in swaddling clothes upon the hay While shepherds watched their flocks by night An angel appeared in glorious light. Saying to them, “Do not fear.” The Son of God is very near. To you and all who dwell on earth Glad tidings of His holy birth.

For unto you is born this day The Saviour of men who will light the way For He alone can save us from sin And give us peace deep within.

The heavenly host praised God above For sending His gift of greatest love! These tidings of great joy I bring Of Christ the Lord, our Heavenly King! —By Annette Hanus Sebesta Lodge 88, Houston

Thank you to Annette Hanus Sebesta for sharing this beautiful poem with the Vestnik. Best wishes, dear Vestnik readers, for a wonderful holiday season. Thanks for your friendship throughout the year. You — our members — are the heart and spirit of SPJST. May God bless you and your family during the Christmas season and in the new year.

Merry Christmas from David, Richard, and Melanie and All of Our Kitty Family

Listed below the photo is the name of the NHS member followed by the name of the person they portrayed in parentheses. Each member gave the tourists a brief description of his character. This event was sponsored by the Fayetteville Heritage Museum and the National Honor Society and served as a fundraiser for both or-

ganizations. Approximately 150 visitors took a “step back in time.” At the conclusion of the tour, guests were treated to cookies and kolaches. Sharon Fritsch, teacher at Fayetteville ISD, is the NHS sponsor. Sharon is also president of SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville. The Fayetteville Museum is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 to 4 p.m. To book a group tour and for more information, please contact Irene Polansky (979) 378-2378 or email tictoc@cvctx.com. have attended two meetings. The next meeting is in January, and we want to report some really good news. Mary Ann Kieschnick of Lodge142, Houston in District Five presented $10,000 to our Board in the October meeting designating it to be applied to the principal of the $500,000 note owed to SPJST Home Office. The Museum depends on donations and grants to survive. It has no way to generate cash other than the generosity of people and Foundations. The Museum must be preserved so that future generations may learn and appreciate the hardships, talents, and efforts made by hardworking Czechs who immigrated to this country. The Czech people and those of us privileged to be a part of their lives can be rightfully proud of their heritage and the contributions their ancestors made to Texas and the United States. A memorial book has been donated to the Museum. The names of your loved one will be inscribed in this book for a donation of $25 or more. All these contributions will be paid on the principal of the note. Every dollar paid on the principal will help. The note amount sounds like such a large amount and it is, but all of you can help and with you behind us, we will make a huge dent in the debt. SPJST Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Leonard Mikeska’s figures give you an idea of how important it is to pay principal payments, and I quote an excerpt from his email:

“The current payments of 5 percent interest thru May 1, 2011, are $2,083.50 monthly calculated on the principal balance of $500,000. A principal payment of $17,500 will reduce the $500,000 to $482,500. The 5 percent monthly interest on the re-

duced principal balance of $482,500 will be reduced from $2,083.50 to $2,020.42, and this will be a savings of $73.08 monthly or $2.44 daily. As a matter of information, each additional $1,000 reduction in the principal will reduce the monthly interest by approximately $4.17 and the daily interest by $0.14. After May 1, 2011, regular payments of interest and principal will begin in the amount of $4,250.57. Of course, the additional payments on principal now mean that a larger amount of each payment will be applied to reduce principal.” Any contribution, small or large, will be greatly appreciated and to those needing to make some contributions this year to lower your taxes, this is a great opportunity to get the tax deduction and help preserve the heritage of the Czech people who so richly deserve it. SPJST Tarok Rules

Editor’s Note: Below are rules for the game of taroks. Rules, including photos, are available for download at www.spjst.org. SPJST will host its annual State Tarok Tournament on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas. Tarok cards are available for $7 (plus shipping) from the SPJST Home Office. For more information about the game or to order tarok cards, call Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at the Home Office (800) 727-7578 or email tammym@spjst.com. Cards can also be ordered from The SPJST Store at www.spjst.org. Information from www.pagat.com: Taroky is a tarot game for four players, played in the Czech Republic (especially in Moravia) and also in Slovakia. It is played with a 54 card pack. Taroky is also played by the Czech communities in central Texas, USA - for example in the towns of Temple, West, and Fort Worth. There are enough players that Taroky cards are available in the shops there, and regular tournaments are held.

1 Chips Each player starts with a count 100 in chips. A player may borrow chips from the bank. The chips will have to be paid back. 6 blue, 6 red and 10 white. Blue = 10. Red = 5. White = 1

2 Shuffling the Deck The deck should be shuffled at least seven times. Be wary of a poor shuffler. Cards are apt to be dealt as tricks were taken.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Member Celebrates 96 Years

George was unable to attend the November 21 meeting due to a heart attack and was home recuperating. RIGHT PHOTO: Vice President/FAC

3 Starting the Game Anyone can deal the first hand or cards may be drawn to determine first deal. High card normally deals first.

4 Dealing the Cards The cards are shuffled and “cut” by the person on the left. The first six cards of the deck are taken off the top of the deck and placed in the middle of the playing surface. This is called the Talon. The cards are then dealt in groups of six to each player beginning with the player on the dealer’s right.

5 Knocking on the Deck (Klupek) The person who knocks on the deck has the option of how the cards are to be dealt. One at a time; two, three, four, six, or 12. When the knocker calls “choice,” 12 cards are dealt in four stacks. The Povinost player has the first choice followed by the other players in counter clockwise fashion.

6 Initial Bidder The holder of the II of trumps is the first bidder - if not the II than the III or IV, etc. The first bidder announces Povinost or Prever. Povinost is announced when the bidder plans to play with a partner. Prever is announced when the bidder plans to play alone against the opponents.

7 Povinost (Four Times) - The Bid Bidding Povinost declares that the bidder will be asking for a partner. However, this is not always true. Should the Povinost player care to play alone against the other three players, the XIX is announced when it is in the Povinost player’s hand. The Povinost bidder if not overbid by Pre-

ver takes the first four cards from the Talon before announcing which trump will be the partner. The Povinost bidder normally calls for the XIX. Should the XIX be in the Povinost bidder’s hand, the next highest card (XVIII, XVII, XVI, or the XV) is called. Should the Povinost hand contain these cards, the Povinost bidder must play alone against the other three players. The remaining two Talon cards go to the two players to the right of the Povinost player. Povinost cannot be passed.

8 Prever (Three Times) - The Bid Bidding Prever is the highest bid. The Prever bidder plays alone against the other three opponents. The Prever bidder draws the first three cards from the Talon and may draw the second three cards after exposing the first three. The Prever bidder may go back to the first three cards. A Prever loss costs double for the second three and triple for going back to the first set. The Povinost bidder leads the first card.

values (8 or 10 trumps, Pane, Trull and etc.) and make challenges (Kontra, Re and etc.). Thus the Povinost player must ask “Can I go?” or “Is everyone ready to play?” No values can be declared once the 1st card is played.

12 Declarations/Announcements The winning bidder declares any values such as Taroky, Trull, Pane, etc. The other players should follow suit in order. Values must be declared. Failure to declare a value may have a bearing on how the hand is played; however, failing to declare does not

result in a penalty, as this may be difficult to prove at the end of the hand. However a failure to declare nullifies a Valat call should the Valat be lost because of the omission.

13 Challenges Challenges are Kontra, Re, Supre, and Mort. Challenges can be made on the hand and the Pagat. A challenge doubles the original win or loss and subsequent challenges double the previous challenge. A challenge is an announcement that the bidder will not win. Thus a 53/53 tie is a loss for the bidder and the challenge(s) is/are applied.

14 Following Suit If you cannot follow suit to what is led, you must play a trump. If you do not have a trump, then you may play anything.

15 Pagat Taking the last trick with the Pagat earns the winner(s) two chips. Losing the Pagat at the end costs you and your partner two chips. Announcing the Pagat doubles the chips. Announcing the Pagat can be challenged.

16 Valat Taking all the tricks is Valat. This earns the winner(s) 20 chips. Announcing a Valat doubles the chips. Valat voids the collection of any chips for the Pagat.

27 Hierarchy of Cards The Skys is the dominant card in the deck, followed by the XXI, XX, XIX down to the I (Pagat). Trumps when played take all suit cards. The suits (Spades, Clubs, Hearts, and Diamonds) are of equal value. Trick taken power of the suit cards are determined by the value of the cards and/or the number of pips on the cards. 28 Winning Points Fifty-Four

29 Trick Taking Each player should take tricks won. Tricks should not be combined with your partner until the hand is concluded. This practice may facilitate the correction of misplays should they occur.

30 Determing Chips Won or Lost The game is based on a 54-point win. Take the total number of points and either subtract from 53 or subtract 53 from the total number of points won; depending on whether you won or lost. Add 10, multiply by 2 for Povinost and 3 for Prever and take the first digit(s) to determine what number of chips or won or lost. Major fraction (5 or greater) goes to the next highest number.

31 Errors and Penalties Tabulating score sheets. Errors in recording the scores at the end of a round can affect the players standing especially if they are contending for the top positions in the tournament. It is recommended that a person verify that each player’s score is entered correctly and that the final score equals 400. In case of a negative score; add the positives and subtract the negatives and record the negative with a minus sign (-).

Discarding irregularities The game will be completed. The extra card(s) will go to the opponents. The violator(s) will pay a penalty of two chips to each player. The violator(s) will not collect any chips. Should the violator have a partner(s)

VӖSTNÍK

that is/are due chips because of a win, it is the violator that pays the chips. The violator is also responsible for any losses suffered by the partner(s). Chips collected for values at the beginning of the hand are not affected by discarding irregularities.

Discarding a King or a Trump Violator pays a five-chip penalty to each player. A trump can be discarded but it must be discarded face up or shown to each player. Failure to follow suit (re-nig) When detected, every effort should be made to back-up the cards played to rectify the error. If this is impossible, the hand will be completed and the error will be subjected to the same conditions and penalties as those for discarding irregularities.

Illegal declarations Declaring and collecting chips for values you do not have, results in a two-chip penalty to each player unless the error is announced before the 1st card is played. Any chips collected must be returned. The hand will be completed. Should an incorrect declaration result in a failed Valat call, the Valat call is voided. 32 Other Problems Announcing the Wrong Trump Bidder announces the wrong

Wrong Person Plays Povinost When discovered during the course of the game that the wrong person was on Povinost, the game is concluded. The player that should have been Povinost and the violator each pay a two-chip penalty to the other two players. The player that should have been Povinost now gets to play and the person that was out of turn is skipped. No one loses a Povinost unless the bidder announces the wrong trump for a partner.

Partners Not Known It is permissible to ask the players if the called for trump has been played and who played it. If at the end of the hand, the cards become merged with the wrong player’s cards, the cards are counted and chips are paid as if there was no mistake. It is highly recommended that each side should count their cards. Calling the Pagat on the End Only the holder of the Pagat can call it on the end. Should the Pagat be

called, and the caller not have it in the hand, the holder of the Pagat can give countra doubling the number of chips. The caller must also pay a two-chip penalty. Player calls the Pagat and player is a card short or player has an extra card in the hand either because player failed to discard or did not discard the proper number of card. This is usually discovered on the final or prior to the final play of the hand. Solution: The holder of the Pagat loses the right to take a trick with the Pagat. The Pagat, the trick taken with the Pagat, (if the Pagat did take a trick) and the extra card is there is one, belongs to the opposition. This is a violation and the same penalties as in discarding irregularities apply.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

Dreaming of a white Christmas? Many people look forward to newfallen snow to add to the picture of the holiday season. How many, though, give thought to how snow actually forms? Snowflakes are ice crystals that form in the clouds. Water vapor freezes and clings to the dust particles in the air. As the crystals group together, they form snowflakes. Snowflakes are hexagonal crystals, meaning they always have six sides. Snowflakes can grow in different forms, including columns, needles, plates, dendrites, columns with plates, and irregular shapes. Complex shapes emerge as the flake moves through differing temperatures and humidity levels. When snowflakes melt and refreeze they may come down from the sky in the form of a ball instead of a flake. These are known as graupel. Snowflakes are unique in that no

two are the same. Because they are ice crystals, they are also clear in color. However, when gathered on the surface of roadways or other items, they collectively reflect the light and give off that white hue. A snowflake is often the universal symbol for winter or wintertime conditions. In Russia, people have long made paper snowflakes during the Christmas season and hung them in the windows. A snowflake also was the symbol of the winter olympics in 2002. Although snowflakes are cold, snow can actually act as an insulator. The intricate shapes of snowflakes trap air in between the flakes as they pile up. These tiny pockets of air prevent air from circulating, thus preventing heat from being transferred by convection. Seasonal Song Becomes Holiday Favorite

The song “Winter Wonderland” has become a staple of holiday radio. Much like “Jingle Bells,” “Winter Wonderland” was not intentionally written to become a Christmas carol, but evolved into one over time. The song was published in 1934 by composer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard B. Smith. Smith resided in the town of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and was inspired to write the lyrics of the song after seeing Honesdale Central Park and his own childhood home blanketed in snow. Smith actually wrote the lyrics while being treated in

the West Mountain Sanitarium in Scranton, Pennsylvania, for tuberculosis. Many singers have performed the song throughout the years, so much so that it is often a standard song on artists’ holiday compilations. Some of the better-known and earlier versions were made by The Andrews Sisters and Perry Como. “Winter Wonderland” has evolved into one of those songs that inspires visions of snowy splendor. Original lyrics feature a portion of the song mentioning young lovers being married spontaneously by a traveling “parson,” a Protestant minister. Some thought those lyrics sent the wrong message to children, and another ver-

sion was written with a circus clown, instead. The song has been sung with either bridge in place and even both in lengthier versions of the tune. For those who want to enjoy their own winter wonderland and sing along with this classic winter carol, here are the lyrics.

He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland.

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight, Walking in a winter wonderland.

Later on, we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire, To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland.

In Memory of Elvira Messer

Elvira Messer, 89, of Houston, Texas, entered into everlasting life on November 19, 2010. Elvira was born in Moravia, Texas, on October 11, 1921, to the late John and Albina Kahanek. She is preceded in death by husband Ernest; and sisters Hettie Brossman and Martha Kutac. She is survived by sons Charles and Doug and wife Susan; grandchildren Erin Welsh, Steven Messer, Elvira Messer L a u r e n Gastineau; and sister Jean Schwirtlich. Elvira grew up working hard, picking cotton on her parents’ farm. She graduated from Moravia High School in 1939 where she was a top volleyball player, specializing in spiking. She worked for a while at Frank’s in Schulenburg before attending business college in San Antonio. While in San Antonio, she met a handsome soldier, Ernest Messer, and they married in April 1947. In 1952, they moved with their two sons to Houston. Elvira was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker for many years. She was well-known as a great cook. With this talent, she blessed many elementary students in the Spring Branch School District as a member of their cafeteria’s staff. In her retirement years, she enjoyed helping at a local food bank, meeting with her church’s ladies’ group and growing lush plants in her yard. Elvira was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who graced the lives of all whom she met. We are comforted by knowing that she is now praising her Savior face to face. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia. Funeral service was held Wednesday November 24 at 11 a.m. Interment was at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston. —SPJST—

ures and parts which are set in motion by a unique mechanism. When creating the nativity scene, its author, woodcarver Josef Probošt, cooperated with experienced woodcarver Josef Kapucián. The bethlehem was created for over 40 years starting from 1885. The motion mechanism of the bethlehem was assembled by the carpenter Josef Friml; it contains more than 150 wheels and pinions, levers, chains and belt pulleys. In 1935, the original crank drive was replaced with an electrical drive. Many of the figures have the appearance of Probošt's neighbours. They display well-known Biblical scenes in the environment of a Bohemian town of the late 19th century. Fifty-one figures move at work, 120 move on belts, 180 are motionless, and the other 1,500 are animals, trees, buildings, etc. The natural middle point of the bethlehem is the Christmas crib with the Holy Family and bowing shepherds as the central motif of the scene. The surrounding terraces show the lives of common people and craftsmen, inspired by real people living in Třebechovice and surrounding vil-

lages. The remaining terraces show biblical scenes from the Annunciation of Virgin Mary to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His Ascension. In front of this nativity scene there is a boy and a girl with tin bowls in hands to show the visitors where to put the coin for entrance and as a reward for the opportunity to see the nativity scene. The whole nativity scene is closed in by machine made wooden panels, a background, drapery and small wooden turned steeples.
