Brother Mikulas Bids Farewell

After more than 50 years of service to SPJST, Jerry Mikulas has announced that he will be retiring as Financial Secretary, effective December 31, 2010. “I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to work at a job that I have loved for the past 50 years and five months,” says Brother Mikulas. “After much thought and consideration, I am announcing my retirement. My family has been my biggest supporter throughout my career and now it’s time for me to focus all my energy and time back into my family.” Brother Mikulas started on August 1, 1960, working in the Financial Secretary’s department under the direction of Raymond Urbanovsky, whom he considers his mentor. Jerry was first elected Financial Secretary by delegates to the 22nd SPJST Convention held in 1976 in Waco. He says that he fell in love with the job and is proud of the finance and accounting work that he has been able to do for SPJST. “I always strived to provide prompt, efficient and courteous service to our members,” adding that he was proud SPJST has maintained its fraternal spirit over the years. “I’m also happy to report that in all of those years, we never had an audit that indicated any discrepancy of any magnitude.” Brother Mikulas says the thing he’ll miss most about the job is the people. The job, he says, has been an everchanging experience. He was responsi-

ble for ushering SPJST into the computer era in the late 1970s. “I spent many a night there until three o’clock in the morning, ensuring that the system was functioning properly,” he recalls. Jerry says he enjoyed working with his fellow officers and district directors in assembling budgets that kept operating expenses down and preserved and enhanced fraternal incentives and services. The SPJST Supreme Lodge and Home Office honored Brother Mikulas with a 50th anniversary party and open house on August 6. “The depth of experience and knowledge that Brother Jerry takes with him will be dearly missed,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “The one consolation is that he won’t be taking his incredibly devoted and talented staff with him. We wish Jerry a happy and well-deserved retirement.” Upon Brother Mikulas’ departure and until further notice, SPJST Data Manager Debbie Dohnalik, with 34 years of SPJST accounting experience, will oversee activities within the department. Brother Mikulas and his wife Betty have three children, Donna Heatherley and husband Shayne, who have three children, Lauren Jeneyson, Hailey Heatherley, and Ty Heatherly; son Wade Mikulas and wife Michelle, who have three children, Landon, Parker and Brooke; and Chad Mikulas and wife Heather, who have two children, Cole and Camryn. —SPJST—

Just because you live in a small community and belong to a rural lodge doesn’t mean you can’t hit the big time in insurance sales . . . just ask Heather Wilhelm of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar! In November, Heather had a certificate for $4,000,000 issued! Heather “When I conWilhelm tacted Heather and let her know her applicant had been approved, you could literally hear the joy in her voice and sense the huge grin on her face,” Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride exclaims. “I am pretty sure that it took a couple of days before her feet touched the ground!” Congratulations to Heather on a job well done! “I can’t wait to see what she has in store for 2011,” Brother McBride adds. —SPJST—

Happy New Year 2011!

Happy New Year! May the new year adorn your life with sweet

memories to cherish forever, those whom your heart holds close, and abundant joys and happiness. Best wishes to our members, lodges, and youth clubs for a year of success and motivation to keep SPJST strong throughout Texas. May you enjoy life to the fullest, and may you give back to those in need and serve your communities by volunteering and making a difference. Wishing you life’s best in 2011.

Ode to the New Year ‘Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies I’d nibbled, the eggnog I’d taste At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber). I’d remember the marvelous meals I’d prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese And the way I’d never said, “No thank you, please.”

As I dressed myself in my husband’s old shirt And prepared once again to do battle with dirt — I said to myself, as I only can, “You can’t spend a winter disguised as a man!” So — away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished ‘Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won’t have a cookie — not even a lick. I’ll want only to chew on a long celery stick.

I won’t have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I’m hungry, I’m lonesome, and life is a bore But isn’t that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet! —Will and Guy

Fraternal Paperwork Due The new year brings very important deadlines in several areas of SPJST. For our lodge leaders—especially fraternal activities coordinators (FACs), lodge paperwork is due very soon. Please don’t wait—don’t hesitate. Get these papers and forms submitted today. A complete list appears in State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke’s letter that begins on page 5. These forms must be submitted in order to receive incentive awards at the annual banquet to be held on January 29. Both SFAC Chester and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez are anxiously awaiting your lodge’s forms. They are both available to assist lodges in completing the forms and answering any questions. “We want every lodge to be recognized and receive their awards at the banquet,” Tammy says. “But, no paperwork - no awards.” Chester adds, “So, why wait? Get those forms turned in today!” —SPJST—

Thank you for sharing the joy of the holiday season with us.

As we look back at 2010, we see a road paved with life experiences – both bad and good. The bad times stemmed from the ups and downs of doing business in an environment recovering from economic hardships from the previous year. The good times reflect the ongoing ability of SPJST and its lodges to make a positive difference in the lives of its members and their communities. Life goes on. With the new year upon us, this is a time for introspection and planning. Look, too, at your failures and see them as learning experiences upon which you can build and improve in the coming year. Important Deadlines The following reports are due on the dates listed below. January 3—New Officers address, phone listing, email January 14—Fraternal Incentive Report/Year-End and Year-End Fraternal Support and Community Services Report February 18—Outgoing Officer Awards May 15—990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office

Lifetime Achiever Award requests will be due two weeks prior to your district spring meeting. If you would like to recognize the Every Day Heroes in your lodge, a

form is available at www.spjst.org. If all these reports are submitted on time, your lodge will be able to use item number two on the Year-End Fraternal Incentive Report as one of your Fraternal Acts. Please know, if these reports are not submitted by the deadline, any incentive money your lodge has coming will be held until these reports are received. If your lodge has not addressed these items, please make sure to do so as soon as possible. These programs benefit your lodge as well as your members. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact me. Officer Elections All lodges should have elected officers in the months of November or December. Please take a moment to complete the paper work sent to each lodge and return to the office of Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. Information requested are the names and addresses of the officers for the coming year. Remember, this counts as one of your fraternal acts for the year if all paperwork is submitted on time. If this has already been done, thank you. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to update information in the back section of the Vestnik. If any information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny at (800) 727-7578.

Outgoing Officers Do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not re-elected for the year 2011 and does not seek re-election in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings. If you need an entry form, please go to the SPJST website at www.spjst.org, click on Fraternal Activities, then click on upcoming fraternal activities for a flier and an entry form. If you will recall, at the Supreme Lodge meeting in July 2009, it was voted to let non-members participate. The registration fee for members will be $7 while non-members pay $15. If any member knows of someone (member or non-member) who would like to participate, please invite them to enter.

Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31.

Join Hands Day As your lodge and youth club make plans for the coming year, we strongly encourage all lodges to mark May 7 on your calendar and make plans to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. The idea is simple: Adults and youth working together and with other organizations to make good things happen in your community. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by America’s fraternal benefit societies in partnership with The Points Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. Again, this year, SPJST will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges

7

to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. Lodges, even those who do not have a youth club, are encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator prior to Join Hands Day and online with the Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, SPJST will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered their projects online. Remember, to receive your check, you must register your project online as well as with the Home Office. We can help you with that if you have any questions. Our goal for 2011 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can

were elected. Virginia Williams made a motion that we reelect all officers by acclamation, seconded by Frank Tomascik. Motion carried. The secretary and treasurer each gave reports, and the reports were approved as read. Sandie Fischer had the tables so beautifully decorated for Christmas which helped us realize the spirit of Christmas is here. Under new business, we had another suggestion for the title and drawing for displaying the paver bricks and paver stones by Arthur Peevey. He recommended the title “The Circle of Memories” as his drawing of the garden is in a circle. We have good news! The National Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded us a grant in the amount of $4,000 with matching funds for the preparation and restoration for the master plan. Mr. A.W. Zajicek is so kindly assisting President Williams in completing Form 501A which is required to process these grants. Mr. Ben Heimsath of Heimsath Architects in Austin has offered to help us with paperwork needed to qualify for the

We are so anxious to get things rolling on our preservation plans. Vice President Scott Brandon gave us a report on upcoming SPJST events. Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky spoke. He attended the unveiling of the artist’s rendering for the Fort Hood memorial; SPJST Home Office Christmas Open House where he and LaVerne demonstrated making apple strudel; Christmas party at Seaton; and he still made our meeting. Tickets will be $15. Good luck peas and corn bread will be served. So plan to attend. Mary Helen Rodriguez made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Scott Brandon. Motion carried. Scenes from Lodge 48, Beyersville’s Christmas Social

Our talented members and friends of Lodge 48, Beyersville had the hall decorated and highlighted with pots of poinsettias on each table to put us all in the Christmas spirit. The Christmas celebration on Sunday, December 12, 2010, began at 4 p.m. with the social hour. Snacks with a choice of several types of drinks were available. We had the opportunity to socialize and get reacquainted with fellow SPJST members, their families, and visitors. We were happy that State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke and wife Colleen and new State Youth

Director Frank Horak were able to join us for the Christmas party. We were than treated to a wonderful meal of spaghetti with options of sauce or meatballs, salad bar with all the trimmings, and garlic bread. Our gratitude to those who helped in the preparation and serving which included Robert Leshikar, Bobby and Ruth Ann Wuensche, Wayne and Rita Kelm, Donna Machac, Bonnie Wolf, and many others who were instrumental in making this a special meal. We also enjoyed the many delicious desserts brought by members and friends.

The evening progressed with a special presentation by Lodge 48 youth, led by Donna Vanecek. “The Christmas Story” was reenacted in era-appropriate costumes which added to the events leading to and following the birth of Christ. The youth also led us in singing Christmas carols during the program. We wish to say thank you to all the youth who shared their time and talents to bring us such a moving performance. Door prizes of poinsettias and SPJST items were awarded to winning ticket number holders. The grand finale was the arrival of

Santa Claus (Larry Beran). The children had the opportunity to visit with Santa and make their gift requests. Children were given candy, and adults received a bag of fruit and candy. It takes many people to organize and complete an event such as the annual Christmas party, and we sincerely appreciate those who gave their time for our enjoyment. We are so blessed to have the leadership, membership, and community support which enables us to offer a family friendly place for gatherings at an affordable rate. —SPJST—

On December 21, the youth will take all food collected to CTLC, go Christmas caroling to several nursing homes, and end the evening with pizza at Mazzio’s. Way to go youth: giving and sharing! We are so proud of you. December birthday celebrants are Leroy Dana, E.J. Pechal, Melanie Regan, and Eldon Zavodny. Happy birthday and many more to each of you. Dear Readers: On Sunday, December 12, 2010, Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club visited the Ennis Nursing Home. We sang Christmas carols and delivered pine cone Christmas trees to all the residents there.

I also played “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” on my keyboard. I really liked going to the nursing home because it made the residents very happy to see us. After that, my family went to my Meme’s house and decorated her house for Christmas. Merry Christmas, Erica Clark, age 10 —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: elf in school play

Dear Readers, I was an elf for my Christmas play in the fourth grade at school. I had three parts:

1) For a song called “Chillin’” which was for the snowman, and I said “Snowman on the stage keep the lights cool” cue the thunder and “action.”

2) For the three-minute nutcracker, I said “you got three minutes—ready, set, go.”

3) In the middle of the nutcracker, I said “That’s just the beginning. We’re just getting started. Hang on to your seats.” Those were all my speaking parts. Fraternally yours, Brandon Droste —SPJST—

The duck race is when you take the duck, and you compete with your friends to see who can pump water out of old time pumps faster. Then, we went to the corn cannon

which is where you shoot corn out of a cannon and try to hit a target. If you hit a target, you get a free drink coupon. I hit the target and got a free drink. There was also a garden hose maze, a hay maze with round bales, and round bales to climb on. The family who owns the maze also

has a dairy so my mom bought some fresh raw milk and cream before we left. The next week, we made some really good homemade chocolate ice cream with that milk and cream. We all had a good time at the maze. Fraternally, Leah McDonald —SPJST—

Zatančili několik známých tanců a kousek české besedy.
