VӖSTNÍK

Thanks and Best Wishes, Jerry

For the first time in five decades, SPJST is starting its year without

Jerry Mikulas. Financial Secretary Jerry retired on December 31, 2010, after 50 years and five months of service to the Home Office. Jerry’s contributions to SPJST are numerous, and his legacy includes building a staff of experience. Jerry’s employees have a combined 134 years of service to SPJST. Although it will take some time to get adjusted to their supervisor retiring, staff members Debbie Dohnalik Dorothy Stuchly, Linda Johnson, Lisa Kirby, Lori Slack, and Stephanie Bartose are ready and willing to assist members with their billing/premium notice concerns. Data Manager Debbie Dohnalik will oversee activities within the department. We wish Jerry the best in his retirement, and we express appreciation to him for all of his years of service to SPJST.

Get Well Soon, Director Bayer Get well wishes are sent to District Seven Director Bob Bayer who is recovering from shoulder surgery. Best wishes to Brother Bob for a speedy recover. Words of Wisdom Motivational writer and speaker Zig Ziglar has a lot to say, and his words have inspired thousands of people to reach for and achieve their dreams. Here’s a selection of some of his most powerful quotes: • “You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

• “The greatest good we can do for others is not just to share our riches with them, but to reveal theirs.”

• “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

• “Every choice you make has an end result.”

• “If you learn from defeat, you haven’t really lost.”

• “If you wait until all the lights are green before you leave home, you’ll never get started on your trip to the top.”

• “Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful.”

Memory Test Three elderly men, Eddie, Jenkin, and Martin men go to the doctor’s for their memory test. It’s a miracle they remembered the appointment! Anyway, the doctor begins by asking Eddie, “What is five times five?” “191,” is his reply. The doctor rolls his eyes and looks up at the ceiling, and says to Jenkin, “It’s your turn. What is five times five?” “Wednesday,” replies Jenkin man. The doctor shakes his head sadly, then asks the third man, “Okay Martin, it’s your turn. What’s five times five?” “Twenty five,” says Martin. “That’s great!” says the doctor. “How did you get your answer?” “Easy,” says Martin, “just subtract 191 from Wednesday.” —SPJST—

SPJST Scholarship Deadline Approaching - February 1

Dear Members, One of the benefits SPJST offers to its members is the Scholarship Program. In 2010, 38 General Scholarships, three Technical Scholarships, and 12 Leadership Grants were awarded. In addition, at the 2010 State Youth Achievement Day, six District Merit Awards, one State Merit Award, and two Royalty Grants were awarded for a total of 62 scholarships and grants presented for the year. Since the program’s inception, more than $1 million has been awarded. General and Technical Scholarships are funded through SPJST’s annual allocation, through voluntary contributions received from our 100 Pennies Drive, and memorial donations received throughout the year. The number of scholarships given each year depends on how much we receive in donations and the annual allocation already in force. Donations are tax deductible. Applications for scholarships are sent out from September through January upon request. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all required information by February 1, 2011. Recipients are announced sometime during the month of April. The following scholarships are available through the scholarship program:

• General Scholarship For all SPJST members

• Leadership Grant For active SPJST youth club members – Applicant may only apply for this grant in his/her senior year of high school. *(Note: Active youth club members are highly encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship (or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school)

and the Leadership Grant.) Likewise, endowed scholarships are also available. District Six established a scholarship for a member in that particular district. Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station established a scholarship in memory of Ernest Wentrcek, Sr. to provide a scholarship for a member of that lodge and/or District One. The Gladys Yates Memorial Scholarship continues to be offered to any winning recipient of an SPJST General Scholarship. Perhaps your lodge or an individual in your lodge would like more information about how to go about establishing an endowed scholarship. Is so, please feel free to give me a call at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575, and I will be happy to go over the details with you. All interested SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship must meet the following criteria: • Applicants must have an active SPJST life insurance certificate in force for at least one full year.

• Applicants must hold an active SPJST life insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

• Applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Please know that recipients may receive only one General or Technical Scholarship or one Leadership Grant. Best wishes to all SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship this year. We hope to have many respond to this opportunity. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

If you have any questions regarding any of the incentives outlined, please contact the Insurance Department at the SPJST Home Office, your district director, state field representative, State FAC, or State Youth Director. Best wishes in the new year and happy recruiting!

Lodge 49, Rowena Members Celebrate Christmas

SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena celebrated its Christmas with a nice group of guests and members on Sunday, December 5, 2010, at the lodge hall. The colors were presented by Brandon and Cammi Teplicek. They also led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members and friends along with a tribute to the men and women serving our country so that we can enjoy our many

freedoms. The young members and guests sang Christmas carols with the adults joining in prior to goodie bags being distributed by Laura Pospichal. Laura told us that Santa had dropped them off prior to the party as he was busy checking on all of the boys and girls, and that Santa did not have time to stay and visit! The meal consisted of fried chicken

with many delicious sides brought by members. Desserts were outstanding! Dorothy Schwertner said the blessing. Special guests included State Field Representative Bobby Davis and wife Anita, District Four Youth Counselor Janice Stevens, and District Four Director Billy Rollwitz. Young and old enjoyed visiting, playing cards and dominoes, and eating. A basket of non-perishable food

items were collected for the local food pantry in lieu of a gift exchange. Thanks to all who donated these items. Special thanks to members and officers who cleaned, decorated, and brought the dishes to make this Christmas party a success—especially Laura Pospichal, Sylvia Rollwitz, Diana Rozmen, Nancy Schwertner, and Beverly Teplicek. —SPJST—

Ownership of Individual Life Insurance Falls to 50-Year Low

Despite the fact that most American families have less to fall back on financially than when the economic downturn began, ownership of individual life insurance has hit a 50-year low, according to a new LIMRA study. The Trends in Life Insurance Ownership study, conducted every six years by LIMRA, found that only 44 percent of United States households have individual life insurance. The number of U.S. households that have no life insurance whatsoever is growing. Today, 30 percent of households

(35 million) have no life insurance coverage, compared to 22 percent of households in 2004. Among households with children under age 18, which arguably have the greatest need for life insurance, 11 million have no coverage. “Clearly, more American families are living on the edge—surviving paycheck to paycheck—and, as our new study suggests, too many without the safety net that life insurance provides,” said Robert Kerzner, CLU, ChFC, president and CEO of LIMRA, LOMA, and LL Global. “The numbers tell a grim story. Today, there are 11 million fewer American households covered by life insurance compared with six years ago. A majority of families either have no life insurance or not enough, leaving them one accident or terminal illness away from a financial catastrophe for their loved ones.”

Families Focusing on Other Financial Priorities in Difficult Times More than 40 percent of Americans say a major reason they have not bought more life insurance is because they have other financial priorities right now, such as paying off debt or saving for retirement. However, the drop in life insurance ownership is not because families are not feeling vulnerable. Among households with children under 18, four in 10 say they would have immediate trouble meeting everyday living expenses if the primary breadwinner died today. Another three in 10 would have trouble keeping up with expenses after several months.

Record Number of Americans See Need for Life Insurance Half of households feel they need more life insurance—the highest level ever. Moreover, 24 percent of households with children under 18 want to speak with a financial professional about their life insurance needs; and a quarter of all households plan to buy life insurance in the next year. According to LIMRA’s study, life insurance beat out all other sources of financial assets or income that Americans expect to use to help pay bills and to maintain their lifestyle in the event of the primary wage earner’s death. “With so many families continuing to struggle financially, there has never been a more critical time for people to own an adequate amount of life insurance,” said Marvin H. Feldman, CLU, ChFC, president and CEO of the LIFE Foundation. “This study shows that Americans place great value on the need for protection and half of all families recognize that they need more life insurance than they have, and that’s good news. Now they need to take the next step, and get the coverage they lack before it’s too late.”

Families Don’t Know Where to Turn for Help About one in four middle-market households admit they don’t know how to obtain or reach their financial goals, including buying life insurance. One of the biggest obstacles is lack of information. Almost eight in 10 U.S. households currently do not have a personal life insurance agent or broker to turn to and most of them say they

never did. Most individual life insurance policies are sold by insurance agents and many Americans want to keep buying in this manner. For instance, 60 percent of Baby Boomer households prefer to buy life insurance face-to-face. Younger generations say they also are interested in gathering information about life insurance online and at their place of work. “As an industry, we need to reach out to consumers and educate them about the various ways they can purchase life insurance,” said Mr. Kerzner of LIMRA. “Whether they buy from an agent, get coverage through their employer, or make an online purchase, the important thing is that they get the coverage they need to protect their loved ones. 6 Steps to Take After an Auto Accident

(StatePoint) Taking the time now to plan what to do if you are in an auto accident can help get you back on the road faster. Doing a few things at the scene of an accident can help you avoid costly and time-consuming mistakes. Here are several useful tips from the experts at Progressive that you should remember if you’re in an accident. You may even want to keep these tips in your vehicle’s glove compartment: 1) Stay safe. Make sure your car and any other vehicles are as far off the roadway as possible. Warn oncoming

VӖSTNÍK

traffic by activating your hazard warning lights.

2) Call the police. Call 911 to report the accident. Even if you just had a fender bender, call the police so they can document who was involved; they’ll decide whether an accident report is necessary.

3) Contact your insurance company and report the claim. The sooner your insurance company knows about the accident, the sooner it can start working to resolve your claim.

4) Stick to the facts. Discuss the accident only with police and your insurance company. Be honest and factual. Avoid guessing or speculating on times, distances or speeds if you’re unsure. 5) Exchange vital information with the other driver. Write down the name, address, phone number, and license numbers of all drivers and witnesses. Ask each for the name of his or her insurer and policy number. Your insurer

Page 11

might need to speak with them to determine who’s at fault for the accident. Your insurance company will want to know if the police responded, or if anyone was injured. Also, get details about the other cars involved, and take note of whether the cars are damaged and if so, where the damage occurred.

6) Consider all your repair options. Once you’ve figured out all of the details at the scene, you’ll need to consider your next steps. With some companies, you can choose the most convenient way to have your claim handled. With Progressive, for instance, you can use a shop in the company’s network, go to a shop of your choice, accept a settlement check and not make repairs at all, or use one of their Service Centers. Using these Service Centers is easy. Just drop off your car, pick up a rental car, and they take care of the rest — from writing estimates to arranging repairs with a body shop. When you report your claim, Progressive will let you know if there is a Service Center nearby and you can decide whether

you’d like to use it. For more useful auto and insurance information visit www.progressiveagent.com. —SPJST—

Too Soon Old

The poem, titled “Too Soon Old,” was written by Dave Griffith of Fort Worth, Texas. Griffith told TruthOrFiction.com that he wrote the poem more than 20 years ago and that he meant for it to be simple and to the point, from youth through old age in his own personal life, high school football, Marines, marriage, the ravages of his own disabilities. Someone took the poem from his site, created a false story about it, and started it circulating on the Internet. This doesn’t diminish the poem and thought. This comes to me from a Vestnik reader and it’s so good, I must share. This could apply to a Crabby Old Woman as well.

Crabby Old Man When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in North Platte, Nebraska, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital. One nurse took her copy to Missouri. The old man’s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem. And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this ‘anonymous’ poem winging across the Internet. What do you see nurses? What do you see? What are you thinking . . . when you’re looking at me?

A crabby old man . . . not very wise, Uncertain of habit . . . with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food . . . and makes no reply. When you say in a loud voice . . . “I do wish you’d try!” Who seems not to notice . . . the things that you do. And forever is losing . . . A sock or shoe? Who, resisting or not . . . let’s you do as you will, With bathing and feeding . . . The long day to fill? Is that what you’re thinking? . . . Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse . . . you’re not looking at me. I’ll tell you who I am . . . As I sit here so still, As I do at your bidding . . . as I eat at your will. I’m a small child of 10 . . . with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters . . . who love one another.

A young boy of 16 . . . with wings on his feet. Dreaming that soon now . . . a lover he’ll meet. A groom soon at 20 . . . my heart gives a leap. Remembering, the vows . . . that I promised to keep.

At 25, now . . . I have young of my own. Who need me to guide . . . And a secure happy home. A man of 30 . . . My young now grown fast, Bound to each other . . . . . With ties that should last.

At 40, my young sons . . . have grown and are gone, But my woman’s beside me . . . to see I don’t mourn. At 50, once more, babies play ‘round my knee, Again, we know children . . . My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me . . . my wife is now dead. I look at the future . . . shudder with dread. For my young are all rearing . . . young of their own. And I think of the years . . . and the love that I’ve known.

Page 12

I’m now an old man . . . and nature is cruel. Tis jest to make old age . . . look like a fool. The body, it crumbles . . . grace and vigor, depart. There is now a stone . . . where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass . . . a young guy still dwells, And now and again . . . my battered heart swells. I remember the joys . . . I remember the pain. And I’m loving and living . . . life over again.

I think of the years, all too few . . . gone too fast. And accept the stark fact . . . that nothing can last. So open your eyes, people . . . open and see. Not a crabby old man . . . Look closer . . . see ME!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within. —SPJST—

When I grow up I wanna be more than I am currently but maturing is so hard for me my mind denies my age you see

Act Your Age compulsory but there’s still that little kid in me that loves to joke and pull a prank I guess I have my genes to thank A vein runs through me just like ore a joker I am to the core and growin’ up just seems a bore aging gracefully I deplore

So when it comes to growin’ up I think that I’ll just pass the buck ignore it and with any luck I’ll postpone my growin’ up. —SPJST—

The Hottest Investment Tips By James L. Lee, III, CPA

Have you ever received a really hot investment tip? How many times has it actually worked out? “Not-so-hot tips” can throw a kink in your longterm investment approach. Here are some sound James L. Lee, III tips for the longterm investor:

1. Get Started Early! — It’s impossible to stress this point too much! Despite other financial pressures, this can often make the difference in reaching your goal. Historically, stock values appreciate in the long run so investing over longer periods can help your appreciation potential with managed risk.

2. Establish a Regular Investment Program — Even experts cannot predict when prices are low and on the rise; therefore, the best strategy is to invest a set amount every month. Like any other investment, this approach cannot protect from loss or guarantee a profit, but it may help to lower the average cost of your investment purchases.

3. Reinvest Returns — By reinvesting distributions from investments, you may be able to increase your account balance over the long term. Assuming a positive return on your investment, you will realize greater benefits from the power of compounding. This is the concept of earnings on earnings.

4. Maximize Tax-Advantaged Retirement Plans — If retirement is one of your objectives, be certain to invest in an employer-sponsored retirement plan if you are eligible. Most plans allow pre-tax contributions and tax-deferred account earnings. Don’t forget about IRAs either.

5. Don’t Be Too “Safe” During Retirement — When you retired, preservation of capital was a steadfast financial planning rule. However, because of inflation, you should be more concerned with preserving your spending power. To keep ahead of the game you must take inflation and taxes into account for the actual amount of your investment return. “Safe” investments could be a losing proposition if they offer no growth potential. 6. Prepare for the Long Haul — Follow the plan. Don’t be tempted to over react to short-term market fluctuations. Chasing “hot” tips could damage your long-term plan.

7. Schedule Regular Portfolio Checkups — Your financial portfolio may need gradual adjustment as your lifestyle changes. You should review your holdings with your financial advisor at least once a year. If you have a major life change (e.g. marriage, baby, job change or early retirement), make an immediate appointment.

State Youth Director encourages tee-shirt design contest participation

Dear Members, I really enjoyed my first Christmas season as your State Youth Director. I had the opportunity to attend several Christmas parties and visit with many of our members. I wish that I could have made all the lodge Christmas parties! The weeks leading up to Christmas and the New Year are a great time of the year for family and fraternalism. Thanks for all that you did to make a positive difference in the lives of our youth this holiday season. This year’s Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Open House on December 6 were both wonderful successes. Thanks to everyone who turned out for these events. Both of the SPJST Floats were in the Temple parade and received first and second place. Melanie and David continue to do a first-class job incorporating new ideas for the floats. Members of the SPJST State Royalty rode Corvettes and represented SPJST very well. Later, at the Open House, Royalty Court members participated in helping the youth decorate gingerbread cookies. It was a great time for the youth and the young-at-heart. Thanks to Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members and Youth Leader Lynette Talasek. They painted many masterpieces on the faces of the youngsters who attended the event. 2011 SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest We need your good ideas and creativity! I challenge all youth club members to participate in the camp teeshirt design contest. Remember the deadline is January 31. This year’s grand prize will be a $100 Wal-Mart

gift card and your design on the 2011 camp tee-shirt. Youth leaders, please encourage all your youth members to participate. All participants will receive two merit points and a participation certificate. We have many youth who are very creative and talented. This year’s theme is “Sailabration 2011.” I am excited in seeing a number of entries turned into the Home Office. Youth Development Workshops To reiterate last month’s newsletter, this will be a one-day workshop for all youth club members. Parents are invited to sit on the informative sessions. We’ll be hosting two workshops in an effort to bring them closer to the participants. Each workshop will consist of three segments:

• Parliamentary Procedure - We’ll provide hands-on experience that will enable all participants to learn the essentials on how to conduct a more effective meeting.

• Public Speaking and Performance This will be a fun session that provides participants with practical, hands-on experience, enabling them to present before a group. Skills learned in this session can be applied at youth club meetings and in District Youth Achievement Day talent and speaking contests.

• Community Service – This segment will provide youth club members with the opportunity to learn more about SPJST’s emphasis on service to each other and the communities that we seek to serve and their responsibility as fraternalists in advancing the common good. The segment will conclude with a review of the 2011 Join Hands Day program and brainstorming ideas for service in their local youth clubs.

Two workshops will be presented. Youth may attend the event closest to them or which best fits their schedule. The first event will be held at the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on Saturday, February 26. The other workshop will be held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Time and location have not been set at this

State King’s Notebook By Samuel Vanicek 2010 - 2011 SPJST State King

December was an exciting time to be SPJST State King. It was a great joy to represent SPJST at various activities during the holiday season. On December 4, 2010, I rode the SPJST Float in a parade for the Georgetown Stroll. I was accompanied by State Queen Jackie Klaus, State Duke Ty Stock, State Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer, and other fellow SPJST Youth Club members. We enjoyed waving to the crowd and wishing them a merry Christmas. Two days later, I rode atop a Corvette with Queen Jackie in the Temple parade. We were followed by Duke Ty and Bayleigh Washam (who was riding in place of Duchess Chandee). The rest of the SPJST caravan included a parade

float for the Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club members and another float for the District Two Beseda Dancers. It was very cold that night, but we had a great time nevertheless. Later that evening, I helped out at the Home Office’s annual open house. I was positioned at a gingerbread cookie decorating table with the rest of the royalty court. We helped dozens of kids (and adults!) decorate cookies. On December 12, my lodge, Lodge 24, Cyclone, had its Christmas party. It was very successful, and many people from both the adult and youth portions of the lodge showed up for the meal and fellowship. I would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy 2011! —SPJST—

time. I will have more information in next month’s newsletter.

Dobry Den Spirit 2010 We are wrapping up another SPJST recruiting campaign: “Dobry Den— Spirit 2010.” All youth leaders have been mailed a report through the end of November on how your lodge did towards meeting your 2010 goal. Youth Leaders Retreat: March 26 Make plans to attend the 2011 Youth Leaders Retreat at Cooper Farm. The retreat will start at 1 p.m. and conclude on Sunday, March 27 before 12 noon. In addition to covering multiple topics of interest, participants will also be treated to a fun “Casino Night.” We will be setting some time aside Sunday for those who would like to participate in the high ropes course. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit.

Mark Your Calendar: May 7 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2011 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and a fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2011. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something. When coming up with ideas for your project try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, SPJST will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day and online with the Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered their projects online.

New Year’s Day Food Traditions

Did you ever wake up New Year’s Day and wonder what that aroma was coming from your mother’s kitchen: The smell of a smoked-ham baking in the oven, black-eyed peas and cabbage simmering on the stove top and the ultimate aroma of fresh-baked cornbread!

These are food traditions prepared and consumed on New Year’s Day, all in the pursuit of good luck, health, and fortune. Depending on who you ask, the foods represent various types of blessings and success. Pork’s rich fat content symbolizes wealth and prosperity. Pork is also considered a symbol of progress because pigs root forward. Ham, roast, pork loin, and sausage are common meats eaten on New Year’s Day. Pigs are popular symbols of good luck and progress in the Czech Republic. Today, the tradition of eating black-eyed peas for New Year’s Day has developed into a number of changes for luck and wealth.

Here are a couple of differences when eating black-eyed peas:

• Best chance of luck every day in the year ahead, one must eat at least 365 blackeyed peas on New Year’s Day. • Black-eyed peas eaten with stewed tomatoes represent wealth and health.

• People would place a dollar amount on the black-eyed pea which would be anywhere from a penny up to a dollar. Depending on how many you ate would determine the dollar amount you would receive during the year.

Cabbage is another good luck vegetable that is consumed on New Year’s Day. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity. They represent paper currency. Therefore, the more cabbage eaten the more currency people will earn for the new year. Cornbread symbolizes life and good fortune. The tradition of eating cornbread on New Year's Day will reward one with gold throughout the year.

Below is a list of questions to answer about New Year’s Day Food Traditions.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club to meet at Buckner Campus

Dear Readers, The youth met on December 12, 2010, to hold a short meeting before heading off to hold a short practice for the mother lodge’s Christmas party. There was not much to discuss since we had met a couple of weeks prior to this, but we were reminded that we will be meeting at the Buckner Campus on January 8, 2011, to help take down their Christmas decoration and have a short meeting before heading off to our monthly activity. I think it is going to be a busy weekend! If you are in the neighborhood, we can always use some extra help! As you are reading this letter, I will

To have butter on your head and a dumpling in your throat

Hello, and welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s Czech language course in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song is by a singer by the name of Xindl X, and it’s called Poslední večeře - The Last Supper. The song is chock-full of idioms relating to food. Doubtless you can think of many in your own language. See how they compare with ours. Mít na hlavě máslo literally translated means to have butter on your head or, as the English say – to have egg on your face. You can also have honey around your mouth – when someone smears it there. Mazat med kolem úst means someone is singing your praises, trying to get into your good books.

fall for your tricks – skočí vám na špek – meaning they will jump on your bacon – don’t ask me why. And you can make them drunk on a roll opít je rohlíkem another expression referring to gullibility. If you have had a few libová léta – or lean years – it means you have not fared too well. Zavařovat means to preserve something, but if you say zavařil jsem si – it means you have gotten yourself into big trouble. In which case, you may have to sbalit si svejch pár švestek – pack up your few plums (read possessions) and leave. The main thing is neplakat nad rozlitým mlékem – not to cry over spilt milk. And when you get a cake – look for the cherry on top – třešnička na dortu – meaning an additional bonus. And I end today on a Czech proverb which says jak k jídlu, tak k dílu or as you eat, you are likely to work – meaning don’t expect a good job from people who pick at their food. This is Daniela Lazarová saying thanks for learning Czech with me and na shledanou! — Daniela Lazarová

Czech language classes to be held in Ennis

It has been a couple of years since the last Czech language class was held in Ennis. If you missed the last one or just want to refresh what you’ve learned, come to the beginner’s Czech language class starting on Wednesday, January12, 2011. These classes will be held each Wednesday night for 12 weeks ending on March 30. The class will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in the kitchen area of the KJT Hall, located at 1216 South Paris Street in Ennis, Texas. This course will cover proper pronunciation, basic grammar, reading and vocabulary. Also included are presentations on Czech history and culture. Although designed for beginners, advanced Czech language students will enjoy a good review. Each student will receive printed handouts along with a progressive CD-ROM containing the class presentations for additional home study. Best of all, you grade your own work! The class is free of charge and you are under no obligation to join or belong to any organization. You don’t even have to be Czech to attend. All you need bring is a pencil and a desire to learn a little Czech. How much you learn will be up to you, as you will get plenty of material to study. The presentations will start promptly at 7 p.m., so come a little early for good seating. Please note, only the class attendees will receive the CD-ROMs and other class materials. This is a similar course that has been taught in West, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Ennis in the past and has been well received. If you have attended one of these classes in the past, it is perfectly all right to come again. The course is presented by SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson members Joe and Alice Janecka and the Ellis County Chapter of the Texas Czech

Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museumʼs Hoelscher Haus hosts open haus

On a cool, sunny autumn morning of Saturday, November 20, 2010, (rescheduled from a rainout in May), more than 100 dedicated supporters, friends, members and their families gathered at the Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum’s ‘Hoelscher Haus’ in La Grange, Texas, for its Fifth Annual Open Haus and Memorial Celebration. President Willie Bohuslav (SPJST Lodge 88, Houston) introduced the board members – Vice President Melroy Brandt, Secretary Irene Bucek, Treasurer Armand Hollas, Directors Jane Freis, Valeria Brandt, Charlie Hoelscher, Larry Maresh (SPJST Lodge 88, Houston), William Pavlas, and Robert Trefny – and welcomed everyone in attendance. Vice President Melroy Brandt served as master of ceremonies. The event began at 10 a.m. with Pledge of Allegiance music, followed with a patriotic Veterans Day tribute recognizing all veterans in attendance. Representing Polka Lovers Klub of America (Po.L.K. of A.) were Mary Lou Schroeder, president of Texas Chapter I, who delivered a heartwarming talk reflecting on her treasured memories of her early years of dancing and stressed the importance of remembering all the deceased mem-

bers of the museum for all their contributions, large or small, and for the gift of having had these individuals in our lives. Also attending were King Weldon and Queen Deloris Schulte (both of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston) of Rosenberg and Goodwill Ambassadors Lee Roy (SPJST Lodge 88, Houston) and Gwen Peterson of Plantersville. Father Joe Hybner delivered the memorial invocation followed by an impressive memorial celebration honoring 35 deceased members and families. Balloons were released as the names of the deceased were announced by director Larry Maresh, and family members with the help of director Robert Trefny and the youth of the Schroeder family released the balloons in memory of the loved ones. Following the memorial service, Father Hybner blessed the charter/founder plaque which now adorns the wall in the ‘Polka Hall of Fame Room,’ one of the two downstairs’ rooms in the museum. Lou Zaeske (SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station), president of the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society of Bryan, Texas, presented a $500 check on behalf of the society to museum president Willie Bohuslav to further the works of the museum. A group photo was taken, followed by a reception of kolaches and refreshments while Po.L.K. of A. members, Jimmie Brosch (SPJST Lodge 88, Houston), J.J. Havlik (SPJST Lodge 88, Houston), Elmer Sewell, Gwen Petersen, and Gene Hackemack (SPJST Lodge 88, Houston) geared up to pro-

vide entertaining polka music for the sing-along. Song sheets were passed out and a large group participated. A Thanksgiving luncheon of fried turkey and trimmings was prepared and served by William and Michele Pavlas, assisted by a host of other volunteers who so graciously pitched in to get the meal readied for serving. Special thanks to the ladies who brought delicious desserts to share with the group.
