Fraternals’ Trade Association Unveils New Identity
The nation’s premier association of fraternal benefits societies has adopted a new identity to better reflect its purpose, membership, and value to communities throughout the nation: American Fraternal Alliance. The organization, which will be known informally as “the Fraternals” or “Fraternal Alliance,” also unveiled a new logo and tagline as part of its new identity. The association, formed in 1886, previously was called the National Fraternal Congress of A m e r i c a (NFCA). SPJST is a proud member of the Fraternals. The American Fraternal Alliance is a nonprofit trade association with 70 members, each of which is a fraternal benefit society. These member societies operate in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. Fraternalists throughout the United States and Canada celebrate their common bonds, work together on thousands of volunteer efforts in communities all across the map, and have brought the concept of mutual aid into its third century. The fraternal system is a time-honored, cost-effective way that a large segment of Americans and Canadians provide financial protection to their families.

A Ribbon of 113 Years
• Fraternal benefit societies have $363 billion of life insurance in force.
• Fraternal benefit societies paid $3.3 billion in life insurance benefits, $4.6 billion in annuity benefits, and $475 million in accident and health benefits in the United States last year.
The fraternal system works. A 2010 economic impact study quantified $1.6 billion in indirect value of “improved social capital” resulting from the activities of fraternal benefit societies. All members of the Fraternals, including SPJST, are making these types of positive impact on society. —SPJST—

The Window From Which We Look
A young couple moves into a new neighborhood.
The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. “That laundry is not very clean,” she said. “She doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.” Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments. About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: “Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this.” The husband said, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.” And so it is with life . . . what we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look . . .
SPJST Awards Banquet Members are invited to this year’s SPJST Awards Banquet on Saturday, January 29 at Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, located at 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple. Doors will open at 12 noon, and the program starts at 1 p.m. Many lodge members, sales agents, fraternalists of the year, and youth clubs will be recognized. All lodges are entitled to send their 2010 and 2011 officers to the banquet free of charge. The Home Office is requesting a head count on or before January 24. Lodge secretaries have been mailed a form requesting this information. Any member may attend the banquet. The cost for the barbecue dinner will
be $9 per person. Please RSVP to Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578 or email tammym@spjst.com. See next week’s Vestnik for complete banquet information and a list of the 2010 local lodge fraternalists of the year.
Email Still Outpaces Online Networking Internet users spend about 4.6 hours a week on social networking, a survey from global market research firm TNS reports, but e-mail is what they use the Internet for most often. The survey found that users spend about 72 percent of their time every week reading and sending emails, which accounts for about 4.4 hours of activity. Checking their Facebook and LinkedIn profiles and related activities takes up about 46 percent of their weekly time. Almost 75 percent say they check their email every day, but fewer than half visit their social networking sites as frequently.
Use the ʻ24-Hour Ruleʼ to Stay Focused Renowned pro football coach Don Shula’s successful career was based, in part, on a policy of looking forward to the next challenge instead of dwelling on his previous victories or failures. Shula’s “24-hour rule” exemplified that. The coach allowed himself, his fellow coaches, and his players 24 hours at the maximum to celebrate a victory—or agonize over a defeat. Shula encouraged them to feel the emotions of success or failure as deeply as they could. After 24 hours, though, the team was expected to stop talking and thinking about the experience and focus their concentration on preparing for the next game. —SPJST—

Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society Gives to Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station
Correspondence was read, and Ron Janota transferred to our lodge from Lodge 41, Port Lavaca. He also is a new sales agent. Congratulations, Ron, and it’s good to have you in the lodge. FAC report was given by Jerry Sijansky. Jerry stated different events are coming up, and he read a thank you note from the Marek family for the cake and certificate. In the past, SPJST and Sokol Corpus Christi always united and had a Christmas party, but with low attendance and Sokol just celebrating its 80th anniversary, we decided just to have an SPJST meeting. With this in mind, Jerry Elzner’s sons Larry, Jim, Tim, and Rick bought and packaged bags of goodies for all members at the meeting. This had always been a tradition at the Christmas party, and they wanted to carry on this tradition. Thank you from all of us, and this was a wonderful surprise. Under new business, the December donation will go to the Wenholtz House and Christmas Appeal. Next Meeting—January 16 The next meeting will be January 16 with the lodge furnishing ham and sausage, and members are asked to bring a side dish. The youth club passed around Christmas cards for all to sign to send to the troops. Birthdays for December were George Marek on the 6th; Brock Donnell on the 12th; Javier Garcia on the 16th; and Frank Sacky on the 20th. “Happy Birthday” was sung to these members. We elected officers for 2011, and officers are:

Credit fix and debt elimination scams By Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
A new year often brings new resolutions, and Texans with mounting consumer debt or bad credit ratings may be tempted by services that promise quick fixes to a bad credit problem. Unfortunately, there are no easy ways to remedy low credit scores. If a credit repair or debt relief offer sounds too good to be true – it usually is. Rebuilding a good credit rating takes time and good financial management. Legitimate credit counseling services and debt repayment plans can offer long-term, practical solutions to debt management. It is critical, though, that debtors distinguish between lawful assistance programs and fraudulent schemes that attempt to take advantage of struggling debtors. Unfortunately, many fraudulent “debt elimination” and “credit repair” scams charge customers hefty fees for “quick fixes” that never materialize. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has aggressively cracked down on these unlawful scams. Our Consumer Protection and Public Health Division recently stopped two Austin-based operations from falsely claiming they could remove “negative” items from clients’ credit reports. Only inaccurate or obsolete items can be legally removed from a debtor’s credit report, while items that reflect negatively on a person’s credit must remain on the report until they expire with the passage of a set amount of time. The defendants in
Past Lodge 191, Lufkin President Alma Breazeale was honored on January 4, 2011, for her untiring and devoted service as 20092010 president of Lodge 191. Presenting the plaque is newly elected Lodge 191 President Andy Anderson.
those cases, Austin Credit Doctor and America’s Credit Doctor, charged customers several hundred dollars in advance fees for their unlawful “credit repair” services. Texans with inaccurate or obsolete information on their credit reports can work directly with credit reporting companies to remove information that should not be included. No one should pay a “credit repair” service to remove those easily remedied items for them. A related scheme, “debt elimination” scams, falsely promise to eliminate consumer debt within just a few short months. Too often, these scams charge large, up-front fees and then fail to deliver
any valuable services to customers. For example, the OAG stopped a fraudulent “debt elimination” operation that falsely promised to quickly and completely eliminate customers’ debt. To become enrolled in the program, customers were required to wire a onetime $5,000 deposit to an unidentified “bank.” The scam’s operators claimed the bank would initiate a debt elimination process and use the deposit to defray the costs of that process. Once all the customers’ cumulative debt reached $100 million, the bank promised to make loans that would pay off individual customers’ debts. However, the $5,000 fee was actually deposited to an account that our investigators traced to Panama. The operation’s owner never offered any evidence that a “bank” even existed. In truth, the scam was simply trying to cash in on the vulnerability of overwhelmed debtors. As a result, the already struggling customers lost their $5,000 deposits. Legitimate financial assistance is available to customers facing seemingly impossible debt. Texans with problems paying their debts should immediately contact their creditors and seek alternate payment arrangements. Creditors are generally willing to negotiate terms directly with customers, so a debt management company is frequently unnecessary. Debtors should ask whether alternate arrangements would affect their credit history. Even if creditors reduce the payments and give debtors more time

to pay a debt, doing so may show up for several years on debtors’ credit reports. Texans seeking debt management services should do their research before hiring one of these firms. It’s important to check with the Better Business Bureau – and even the OAG – to see whether other customers have filed complaints. It may also prove helpful to consult with an attorney about debt relief options. Ultimately, creditors must decide whether to accept a debtor’s restructuring offer. Even if the creditor accepts the offer, the debtor may face credit and tax-related implications.
Page 13
Texans should also keep in mind that under new provisions of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Telemarketing Sales Rule, debt relief service companies are prohibited from charging advance fees. Debt relief service companies can only charge customers after they have successfully reduced, settled or otherwise negotiated the terms of at least one of the customer’s debts. Additionally, any debt settlement fees must be clearly detailed in a formal written contract between the company and the customer – and must be proportionate to the amount of debt at issue. Both the FTC and the Texas At-

torney General’s Office have authority to enforce the new rule. There are seldom quick fixes to a negative credit history if it reflects legitimate debts the consumer failed to repay. The key to rebuilding credit is to manage debt and to consistently pay bills on time. —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy
We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, LOUIS CHARLES VITTEK, 86, of Belton, Texas, who passed away on December 21, 2010, in the Temple VA Hospital as the result of a brief illness. Louis was born to Charlie Frank Vittek and Annie Albina Prcin Vittek on July 23, 1924, in Rosebud, Texas. He was Louis Vittek blessed with a long, healthy, productive, and eventful life during which he was able to enjoy the love of his family and friends and the successes of his many labors. Louis grew up farming corn, cotton, and broom corn and raising livestock with his parents in the Vogelsang community south of Rosebud, Texas. As a result, he grew up with a full understanding and appreciation of a “hard day’s work.” He attended parochial school in Burlington, Texas, and completed his formal education in Rosebud schools. Hard work never dampened his sense of humor or desire to play pranks. The rumor was that it was Louis and his friends that led a cow up the stairs and into the study hall of Rosebud High School and left it there overnight. They were also supposedly the same “bunch” who kept putting the old horse-drawn hearse in the superintendent’s front yard on Halloween. At the age of 18, in 1943, he joined the United States Army, completing his basic training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, before deployment to Atope, New Guinea, to serve combat duty in World War II. Having never stayed away from home prior to joining the service, he looked forward to and treasured his memories of any leave that enabled him to return to see his family. He returned to the USA on Christmas Day 1945 and spent five months in the New Mexico VA Hospital recuperating; he received his honorable discharge in 1946 as a decorated combat veteran. Some of his most valued memories were those of serving his country and his many service buddies. Louis met and fell in love with his wife of 64 years, Martha LaVerne Fikes, of Rosebud, Texas. They were

married in Burlington, Texas, on September 7, 1946. They moved to Temple to begin their life together and to raise a family. They lived in Temple until 1973, when they relocated to Belton, Texas. Louis began his post-military career with American Desk Manufacturing Company in Temple, Texas, as an engineering trainee in a post war on-thejob GI training program. From 1947 to 1955, he worked for the Central Texas Compress, attaining the position of Chief Engineer. In 1955, he accepted the position of plant superintendent for Best Rite Chalkboard, serving in that position until the company was sold in 1961. Being a man of responsibility to provide for his family and hard work, Louis worked a second job during many of his working years; these included the Tem-Bel and Loop Drive-In Theatres, building and selling barbecue pits made of steel barrels (which are still copied today), rebuilding wrecked automobiles (known for this Mustangs), and building wooden hobby horses with LaVerne. In 1961, Louis was recruited to join the founding members of Artco-Bel Corporation, an international school and office furniture manufacturer and distributor, as part of the original management team. During the formative years of this company, he was responsible for insuring optimal operational performance and output. His creativity and engineering talents were widely recognized and he was known as a problem-solver, often on a limited budget. One example was his development of a drilling jig at the cost of $10 (acquired from scrap metal) which was utilized for 29 years until the related furniture line was discontinued. He was responsible for the acquisition of assembly-line and robotic equipment, as well as steel fabrication, traveling both national and internationally in order to do so and played a key role in other responsibilities, such as equipment installation, production, spaceplanning, and unit-cost control. He was called a “motivator” who wanted change for output maximization and was praised as the man with the ability to get the job done right. During his 33 years of service with ABC, he held the positions of personnel manager, plant manager, vice president of manufacturing, and finally, vice president of operations and played a critical role in the successes of this company with its humble beginnings as an 8,000 square foot facility to that of over 600,000 square feet at his retirement. Louis always called his employees and coworkers part of his family; he loved

and cherished them all. After retiring, he and LaVerne traveled for a couple of years before settling down on his acreage in Belton to spend time with his family and to raise donkeys and bar bee-does. Throughout his life, he enjoyed boating, fishing, and deer hunting; retirement afforded him the opportunity to play full time. A man for a bargain, he enjoyed shopping at the various retail establishments for the “best” buys and garage sales, particularly enjoying the interaction with other people. He looked forward to attending breakfast and dinner functions hosted for disabled veterans and sharing stories with fellow veterans. He especially enjoyed spending time with this grandchildren and greatgrandchildren boating and deer hunting. He will be remembered as “Baby” by his wife, “Daddy” by his children, and “Papa Louie” or “Pop” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a man with a steel exterior, but with a sensitive heart, the man with the handshake that “could take you to your knees,” for his dedication to family, his sense of humor, career accomplishments, and definitely for his western wear, cowboy hats and boots, and big belt buckles. He is preceded in death by son Gary Louis Vittek on April 6, 2007; father Charlie Frank Vittek; mother Annie Albina Prcin Vittek; sister Ruby Lee White; brother-in-law Harding G. White; and nephews Harding Charles White, Thomas Charlie White, and Gerald Lee White. He is survived by wife of 64 years Martha LaVerne Fikes Vittek of Belton, Texas; daughter Judy Kay Kelly and husband Robert Wayne Kelly of Spring, Texas; grandchildren Laura Anne Byrd and Brian Patrick Kelly, both of Dallas, Texas, Christopher Louis Snyder of Ellicott, Maryland, and Amy Vittek of Tallahassee, Florida; great-grandchildren Justice Mariah Guthrie and Dwight William Whitely, both of Belton, Texas; and daughterin-law Deidra Vittek of Morgan’s Point, Texas. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton; St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1949, donating his time to installation of chalkboards and school equipment; Knights of Columbus; Veterans of Foreign Affairs; and American Legion. A visitation with the family was held at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 26 with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, December 27 at 10 a.m. Interment followed at Bellwood

Know Your 2010 Tax Rates By James L. Lee, III, CPA
As with any type of goal, proper planning is the key to success. This also extends into the area of tax planning where knowledge of the applicable tax rates for 2010 may prove beneficial in reducing your income tax bill for the year. James L. Lee, III As the following information shows, your taxable income is what determines the tax rate that will be imposed. If your income is just over a certain threshold, reducing your taxable income may be key to
placing you in a lower tax bracket and saving you money. Of course, this brief article is no substitute for careful consideration of all of the advantages and disadvantages of tax matters in light of your unique personal circumstances. Before implementing any significant tax planning strategy, contact your financial advisor, attorney or tax professional as appropriate. Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader reports on activities
Dear Readers, I would like to thank Lodge 47, Seaton youth and their parents for the Christmas presents I received this year. It was really surprising and very generous. I really do appreciate everyone’s support and commitment to this program. I am truly blessed to have each of you in my life. I hope everyone had a great Christmas full of love, rest, and good times. Thank you to all the youth who participated in the Christmas play. You are all such good sports and quick learners. “Remember the Reason for the Season” was a big hit! You should all be very proud of yourselves. I did learn that we have a lot of talent in Lodge 47 so don’t be surprised when you are presented with a skit for YAD. I see preparations in the horizon. We had a nice turn out at Wal-Mart on December 17 to drop off the donations for Toys for Tots. It did not take

Dear Readers, September and October were very busy months with SPJST, the Burleson County Fair, and school. We performed the Czech beseda dance at our local nursing home. After we danced, we were able to serve them fresh kolaches made by Mrs. Betty Suehs. All three of our beseda circles performed at the
Kolache Festival as well, and this year, it was nice and sunny . . . unlike last year when we performed in the rain. The next day we celebrated Grandparents Day and our awards banquet. Many of our youth also participated in our Burleson Fair Parade. I lead our Honeybees and band

very long to make the donation, and I think everyone had a good time. I would also like to thank everyone for caroling on December 21. I have not been caroling since I was a kid and had such a great time! You all sang so loud and beautiful. I was so proud of everyone. Also, I was really surprised at the amount of food that we dropped off at CTLC! It really did not look like that much in the back of my car or in the youth room, but when we put it all in the baskets and flatbed trolley to move it inside I just thought, “Wow!” I really enjoyed visiting with some of you at Mazzio’s, and I think that everyone had a nice time. I enjoyed seeing some of you at the New Year’s Eve dance and would like to thank the Ringwalds and the Mitchans. This was an especially long night to work the kitchen; your hard work was appreciated. We moved the January meeting to Sunday, January 9 due to the New Year’s holiday. However, we will be back on schedule for the February meeting which will be February 6 at 1 p.m. If you are a member of Lodge 47, Seaton and would like to become involved, or if you are interested in becoming a member, please feel free to come to a meeting and find out what we are all about. included shooting corn cobs out of an air cannon, jumping on a giant air pillow, and taking a night-time hayride. Everyone had a great time and is ready to go back next year! —SPJST—

Top Study Tips for Kids
(StatePoint) Although children may be spending hours quietly studying for that big test, it doesn’t mean he’s getting the most out of his study time. Help your children study smarter with these tips from Dr. John Stuppy, spokesman for TutorVista, an online tutoring service:
• Schedules: Plan well and prioritize. Study when you’re rested and alert. • Outlines: Summarize lessons learned in class. Review notes rather than the entire lesson. • Study Groups: Help kids stay motivated while exchanging ideas and knowledge. • Flash Cards: Reinforce lessons and help with last minute preparation. • SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. This Makes me Feel Like a Stag
Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, RRs language course made easy. Today, we’ll look at a few ways of expressing surprise. The phrase to look for is jsem z toho jelen. (Listen RealAudio: 16kbps32kbps; Download: MP3).
Jsem z toho jelen literally translates as “this makes me feel like a stag;” but make no mistake, the word stag in Czech does not have the same connotation as in English.

A more poetic way of expressing the same thing is to say that someone looks like they have just fallen from a sour cherry tree – vypadá jako když spadl z višně . . . and banged his head hard, presumably. Or you can say that someone has fallen off a strawberry plant on their tummy – spadl z jahody na znak — which I admit is hard to comprehend. So better stick with the cherry tree or the stag – which, funnily enough, women can use as well. — Daniela Lazarová

In Czech, the animal is used to express a complete lack of understanding – a state of puzzled surprise. When something leaves you with your mouth open, something that you simply can’t take in or figure out, you can say Jsem z toho jelen. In this case, the lyrics combine two colourful Czech phrases – I feel like a stag – means I don’t get it, and vždyť mi z hlavy rostou parohy means I am growing antlers. The phrase I’m growing antlers is a way of saying that my wife or girlfriend is cheating on me. But back to phrases expressing surprise. The Czech language is very colourful and inventive in this respect. If someone shows a total lack of understanding then you can say kouká jako tele na nový vrata — he is like a calf looking at a new stable door; referring to the fact that cattle automatically know their way home, but if the stable door is different they are likely to get confused.
