Publication Committee Meets

The Publication Committee met on Saturday, January 8 at the SPJST

Home Office in Temple for its annual meeting. It’s an annual review and discussion of all aspects of the Vestnik/Communication Department. We discuss what is working, challenges that we have overcome, and ideas for improving the Vestnik and Communication Department areas. It was a great meeting, and the Committee recommended four items that will be presented to the Supreme Lodge members for their consideration this week. The Publication Committee consists of seven members—one from each district. They are Floyd Kostelka of District One (Lodge 13, Dime Box), Tammy Whatley of District Two (Lodge 29, Taylor), Bessie Petr of District Three (Lodge 84, Dallas), Sharon Hohmann of District Four (Lodge 160, San Angelo), Lorenda Baldwin of District Five (Lodge 139, Danbury), Helen Kelner of District Six (Lodge 28, East Bernard), and Jarolyn Popp of District Seven (Lodge 133, San Antonio). Committee chairman is Jarolyn Popp, vice chairman is Bessie Petr, and secretary is Helen Kelner. Watch the Vestnik for a review of the Publication Committee meeting and a listing of the recommendations. And, we will also include a recipe for a delicious dessert that was served at the Publication Committee meeting!

Army Needed to Help Pilot Survive Thanks to Melissa Victorick Brown of Lodge 88, Houston for sharing a touching story that she heard about recently. Perhaps Vestnik readers of Central European, Czech, Polish, Swiss, Croatian, and

Slovenian descent can make a difference in an Army pilot’s life. According to www.khou.com (Houston’s Channel 11), “CW4 Terry Harsh is an Army pilot with three tours in Iraq under his belt, but his most difficult battle surfaced last June. The 41-year-old has cancer and he needs another ‘army’ to help him in this fight . . . The husband and father of three has an aggressive form of lymphoma. The first two lines of treatment did not work. He is now on his third: a series of pills waging chemical warfare on his tumor.” He says, “If this third-line medication doesn’t work, something’s got to happen quick. So time is not on our side.” Harsh needs a bone-marrow match. The bone-marrow national registry maintains a list of nearly 14million potential donors that can provide cancer patients with valuable stem cells to stimulate their immune systems. But, so far, neither that registry, nor members of his own family, have been able to provide a match with the mix of Central European heritage Harsh likely needs for a transplant and chemotherapy to work. Bone marrow drives have been conducted around Houston. They are looking for people of Central European, Czech, Polish, Swiss, Croatian, and Slovenian descent, ages 18 to 60. A kit can be ordered online at www.marrow.org/JOIN/. The information goes into the National Marrow Donor registry, and as new members get added, it is compared to Mr. Harsh’s tissue. To see the entire story, visit http://www.khou.com/home/ArmyPilot-Needs-Your-Help-in-his-fightAgainst-Cancer-112901899.html. There is also a link to Harsh’s website on the page. —SPJST—

now it is losing ground to pellet stoves and greener options. Here are a few other housing trends that are going out of style and making room for newer designs.

1. Kitchen desks: What used to be all the rage a few years back are now being passed over for larger desks in family rooms or bedrooms. Kitchen desks tend to be small and are more likely to collect clutter than provide a viable working space. 2. Carpeting: Although a little over half of all homes still have carpeting, wood floors, tiles and vinyl products are gaining ground over the once staple of interior design.

Housing trends come and go. Just think of those avocado-colored stoves from the 1970s or the formica bedroom sets of the 1980s. The woodburning fireplace was a must-have home accessory in the early 1990s, but

4. Living rooms: Homeowners who do not desire a formal living space are eschewing living rooms for all-purpose rooms that provide a better place for the family to gather. If a person prefers the TV be separate from a sitting area, then two distinct rooms still may be needed. (MS) —SPJST—

Just a minute said the man. Just a darn minute. The boy hesitated and then took off. He was running away with what he had stolen from the man. The man had suspected something but not this. When he wasn’t looking he had been robbed. Youth was in the boy’s pocket and bounced around in it as he ran. Later, the boy would take it out and look at it. It was small, but it shined beautifully in the sunlight. Maybe someday, it would be worth something, he thought. The boy would keep it for years. Then, one day, ironically, he, too, was robbed of it. —SPJST—

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Celebrates Birthday

Dear Readers, My name is Ryan Davidson. I am a youth member at Lodge 87, Temple. My birthday was December 13, and I turned eight years old! My birthday party was held at my house on December 11. I had a sports-themed party. I love sports. I play machine pitch baseball and pee-wee football for the longhorns. I asked my mom if my party could be sports. I invited all my family and friends over. I asked that they

all wear sports jersey or shirts. My mom made cupcakes that had football, baseball, and basketball on them, I think they were pretty good. My parents turned the yard into a sports challenge area. They had different stations made up. First, all the kids lined up and did stretching like we do in sports. Then, we all participated in sports challenges, football throw, crazy basketball, base hitter, etc. At the end of all the challenges, my parents

Valentineʼs Day History

Every February, we celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving flowers, candy, and cards to those we love. We do this in honor of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, who is St. Valentine? Well, it’s time to brush up on your Valentine’s history! Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind, he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine decided this decree just wasn't fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine’s actions he had him put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. Before he was put to death, he sent the first ‘valentine’ himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’, words still used on cards today. Perhaps we’ll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure . . . February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentine’s Day ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent. Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, “desire”). In Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love. In Memoriam

In Memory of Grace Skrivanek

Grace Anders Skrivanek, 94, of Caldwell (the greater Cooks Point community), passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010, in Bryan, Texas. Graveside service was held Tuesday, November 16 at 11 a.m. at New Tabor Brethren Church Cemetery, under the care and direction of Strickland Funeral Home of Grace Skrivanek Caldwell. Visitation was from 2 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 15 with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Grace was born March 23, 1916, in San Antonio to Noah Thomas Anders and Hattie (Montour) Anders. She grew up in Texas and Alabama, graduating from high school in Houston. She graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos. She began her career as an elementary teacher in East Bernard and continued in Rosenberg, College Station, and Bryan, where she retired after 32 years. She met her husband Joseph John Skrivanek, Jr. when he was a high school band director. He was high school principal at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station, junior high band director in Bryan, and later retired from the Modern Language Department at Texas A&M University. Their over 50-year marriage ended with his death in 1991. One of her greatest joys was seeing the children she taught realize their potential. Grace said she sometimes got the “problem” students. When she asked the principal why, he said they belong with the “problem” teacher. This meant her way of relating to each child, in thinking outside the box before that term became popular, allowed her to reach the children she did. Seeing them become successful adults was truly a joy to her. She had a great love for music. She played the piano and occasionally helped out various churches and organizations. She was active in community affairs and organizations. One was the Czech Education Foundation of Texas. Founded by her husband, his twin brother, and others, it has created and funded academic chairs at Texas

A&M, the University of Texas and North Texas which represent nearly $4 million. She was honored to have been the first woman president of this statewide organization. Another highlight was her selection as Queen of the annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell. A widow at the time, her selection was the first time an individual and not a couple was honored at this popular event. Her hobbies included reading, traveling to Europe, enjoying country living on the cattle ranch, plus her cat Pootie, enjoying her granddaughters and her greatgrandson and extended family. She was a longtime member of the A&M United Methodist Church in College Station, the Eastern Star, and Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 39, Bryan. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; son Thomas Anders Skrivanek; sister Billie B. Kirchner; seven brothers-in-law; three sisters-inlaw; two nephews; and one niece. She is survived by son Joseph John Skrivanek, III (Joey) and wife Susan; granddaughters Sarah Cadan and husband Craig and great-grandson Dillan and Anne Mashek and husband Chris; sisters-in-law Faustine Skrivanek of Ennis and Jodie Skrivanek of Bryan; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Many have referred to her as “Amazing Grace.” This is not a title she liked; it embarrassed her and even caused her to not want the song to be a part of any service. Social Security: Take The Check Now or Later

When you become eligible for early Social Security benefits at age 62 you must decide among taking a monthly Social Security benefit check of, for example, $1,450 at age 62, $1,913 at age 65 and four months, or $2,538 at age 70. Let’s James L. Lee, III look at the factors involved in this decision. First, consider these Social Security retirement benefit basics. Qualifying individuals become eligible for early reduced benefits at age 62. The age to collect full retirement benefits is currently 65 and eight months (Full Retirement Age or “FRA”) and it is on a schedule to increase to age 67 for those born after 1960. If you wait to begin your monthly checks until age 70, you may derive the maximum benefit. Also, if you have reached your FRA, you may have unlimited earned income without triggering a reduction in Social Security benefits. If you will be under your FRA throughout 2009, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for every $2 of earned income over $14,160. If you will attain your FRA in 2009, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for every $3 of earned income over $37,680 earned before the first day of the month in which you attain your FRA. Those eligible for Social Security retirement benefits may want to strongly consider taking the money now, rather than waiting. Although some people in the highest income-tax bracket or with a family history of longevity may find reasons to wait for the larger payment, for most retirees the decision is a simple question of mortality statistics. On average, Americans live into their early or mid-80s. Calculations show that a 65-year-old who waits five years to begin taking maximum Social Security payments won’t recoup the forgone money until

By James L. Lee, III, CPA he or she approaches age 85. Here’s how the math works. Assume you attain age 65 in 2009 and that you are eligible for the maximum monthly Social Security check. You are now eligible to receive monthly payments of $2,323, or $27,876 per year. If you defer taking payments until you attain age 70, you would earn a retirement benefit credit that amounts to an increase of 7 percent a year. So by deferring payment, your monthly income jumps to about $3,066, or slightly more than $36,792 a year. But deferring payments means you would forgo $139,380 you would have received before age 70, during the wait. And while monthly income does increase by $743 at age 70, it would take you nearly 12 years to collect the delayed money. But, around age 82 and four months, you come out ahead in total benefits received. The calculations get a bit more complicated when you elect to take reduced benefits at age 62, especially if you are still working; because, Social Security will reduce your benefit if your earned income exceeds $14,160 (for 2009). For example, if you are a 62-yearold top earner retiring this year, you will receive monthly income of approximately $1,759, which is 75 percent of what you would get by waiting until your FRA to begin taking payments. Assume your benefits are due to begin in January and you continue to work part-time and earn $30,000 throughout the year. Your annual benefit will be reduced by $7,920 ($30,000 - $14,160 ÷ 2). So, your monthly benefit will be suspended from January through May ($1,759 * 4 months = $7,920) and your June monthly benefit will be reduced by $884 ($7,920 $7,036) to approximately $875. Still, if you wait until your FRA to begin taking benefits, you sacrifice $66,842 over the three-year and four month wait, and it will take until your late 70s before you reach the breakeven point.

Additionally, if you intend to keep working and want to take reduced benefits at age 62, you must consider how your benefits will be taxed. It is possible that as much as 85% of your Social Security benefit payments could be taxed. Thus, if you are ready to begin taking benefits now, at age 62, and you are still working, you will have to deal with (1) a reduced benefit for taking Social Security prior to reaching your FRA of 65 and 4 months, (2) a reduction of benefits for earned income over $14,160 and (3) a potential taxation of benefits received. The suitable decision may be to delay Social Security until your full retirement age or until actually and completely retired. And as mentioned before, it may make sense for those with family histories of longevity to delay benefits and receive a larger check in the future. While your situation needs to be looked at individually, in some cases it may be best to take the money now and enjoy it while your health is hopefully still good and the money can still be enjoyed. This is especially true if you have attained your full retirement age as you may enjoy unlimited earned income without triggering a reduction of your Social Security benefit. And, if you just don’t need the income, you may want to take your benefit payments and invest them instead of letting the government hold it. Your investment returns may stretch your breakeven point to an even later station in life. Should you have any questions about any of these issues, or assistance in deciding when to begin taking your Social Security benefits, please contact your local Social Security Administration office or a Financial Advisor. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by James L Lee, III, CPA, Wealth Advisor of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC. —SPJST—
