Perspective on ‘Useful’ Talents

A woman hired a bricklayer to build a wall outside her upscale

home. Talking with him while he worked, she was amazed to discover he was the brother of a brilliant concert violinist whom she’d recently seen perform. “Oh, you’re so lucky to have such a talented brother,” she said. Then, fearing the man might be sensitive about his manual labor job, she added: “Of course, we can’t all be equally talented.” “You said it, lady,” the man responded earnestly. “Take my brother. When it comes to doing something important like building a house, he’s useless.” Sopapilla Cheesecake Here’s a delicious dessert that was prepared for the Publication Committee meeting recently. Give it a try; you won’t be disappointed!

2 cans Pillsbury Crescent rolls 3 - 8-ounce cream cheese, softened 1 3/4 cups sugar 1 stick butter, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract cinnamon, optional

Spray a 9 x 13 pan/dish with cooking spray. Unroll and press 1 can of crescent roll dough into bottom of pan; press seams together. In a separate bowl, blend cream cheese, 1 1/2 cups sugar, and vanilla until creamy; spread over top of dough. Unroll the second can of crescent rolls and place on top of cream cheese mixture, pressing seams together again. Melt butter and pour over top layer of crescent dough.

Mix remaining 1/4 cup of sugar and cinnamon (as much cinnamon as you prefer) together. Sprinkle this mixture over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes until bubbly and slightly brown. Cool, slice, and enjoy!

Lodge 180, Burleson expresses gratitude for SPJST Floats

Dear SPJST Home Office, As you know, Lodge 180, Burleson looks forward to the beginning of the Christmas holidays because they begin with the SPJST Floats coming to the Cleburne, Texas, parade on Friday night and the Burleson parade on Saturday night. David and Melanie Zavodny Nauert and John and Lisa Hoelscher have brought the SPJST Floats to Cleburne and Burleson, and the SPJST Lodge 180 members and friends have ridden on them. There is a lot of fun and excitement preparing for these events. Of course, the floats win the awards for being the best— because they are the best.

We really want to make you and all of your staff aware of the outstanding images Melanie, David, John, and Lisa represent for SPJST. They are so genuinely sincere and friendly, and they truly enjoy what they are doing. They are never too busy to answer any questions we ask them when they are making the parade preparations and waiting for the parade to start. If strangers come up and talk with them, they always have time for their questions, and their friendly personalities are always visible. These are great representatives with their spouses who have created a great image for SPJST. Thank you and may you, your staff, and all of your families have a wonderful new year filled with hope. Sincerely, SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson —SPJST—

Those noted with illnesses or special needs were Rose Nieswiadomy, Aurora Maldino, Ima Lou Crider, Martha Boenish, Carmen Adcock, and Betty Landsfeld, and Florence Greer on the death of her husband Jimmy. Linda Horner reported on Lucille Kret’s condition. Lucille is currently staying at the Eagle Crest Villa in Azle, and Betty Krenek updated the group on Betty Landsfeld’s knee replacement surgery recovery. Betty is in rehab at City View in Fort Worth. The treasurer’s report for the year ending December 31, 2010, was given by Pauline Morbitzer, and the finances of the Ladies Circle are good going into 2011. Hall Manager Joyce Tesar reported on activities scheduled for January with more to come on the February schedule. Under new business, the topic of discussion was “How to Handle Meeting Cancellations Due to Inclement Weather.” A motion was made to use Fort Worth ISD’s recommendation to close public schools as a guideline for cancelling the Ladies Circle meeting due to bad weather. After discussion, the motion was amended to include the rescheduling of the cancelled meeting to the following week (the third Tuesday of the month). There was no opposition to this proposal, and it was passed. Hostesses Willie Mae Becan, Madeleine Myers, Katherine Ormsbee, and Gloria Farek were recognized for their kitchen duty for the day. Thank you, ladies, for serving. February hostesses will be Pauline Brownlee, Bessie Ellsworth, Lisa Ellsworth, and Magdalena Kronenberger. A hostess list for 2011 is available for those who need one. “Happy Birthday” was sung to our January birthday ladies: Theresa Clay, Catherine Davis, Bessie Ellsworth,

11 Ways to Save in 2011

(NewsUSA) - If you occasionally struggle to balance your checkbook (or just want to be more frugal), a few simple changes can help you save. Coupon Mountain (www.couponmountain.com), the most trusted website for online coupons, discount codes and deals from major consumer brands, suggests the following tips: 1. Brew your own coffee. Homebrewed coffee costs about .12 cents a cup; buying your coffee will cost $1.50 to $3.50 a cup — you could end up saving between $500 and $1600 a year. 2. Drink filtered water. With filtered

water, you will spend about 15 cents/gallon. Purchasing bottled water costs a lot more — about $10/gallon.

3. Use lower-wattage bulbs. Not only will less-powerful light bulbs lower your energy bills, they may also last longer. CFL bulbs can also save money long-term. 4. Shop online. Shopping online allows you to easily compare prices, plus you can use coupon codes from CouponMountain.com to gain additional savings. 5. Cancel your gym membership. Do bodyweight exercises from home to

13

build up strength, or locate a recreation facility or park that offers free exercise equipment. 6. Invest in a vacuum sealer. Purchase your meats and veggies in bulk. A vacuum sealer will keep your foods fresher, longer.

7. Buy generic, store brand, or discount. Generic brands will often use the same ingredients or materials. Shop discount stores to find namebrand items for less.

8. Shop out of season. Stores put summer and winter items on clearance at the end of the season — this is a good time to snap things up for next year.

9. Check your monthly bills and usage. Cancel all unwatched movie channels — or use sites like Hulu vs. cable. Use free VoIP like Skype or Google Voice for long distance calls.

10. Don’t overpay for cell phones. You probably rarely use all of your monthly cell-phone minutes, so reduce your plan. Unlimited texting is a good bet, though, because it's very expensive to go over.

11. Get social to save. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter abound with discounts. Check out Facebook.com/couponmountain for savings tips, exclusive giveaways, and more. —SPJST—

One Ring to Rule Them All

The Super Bowl will be played on February 6 this year, and that means two teams will battle it out for glory, big bucks, and the right to wear the coveted Super Bowl ring. The NFL pays $5,000 apiece for 150 rings every year, but individual teams are allowed to spend more money if they wish. The winning team may present the rings to players, coaches, executives, the general staff, and anyone else. (Some rings have been given to former players no longer on the team’s roster.) Some fun facts from Wikipedia and ESPN:

• Only one person so far has been awarded seven Super Bowl rings: Neal Dahlen, who won five with San Francisco (staff and player personnel), and two with Denver as general manager.

• The largest ring in terms of size went to William “Refrigerator” Perry of the Chicago Bears after the team’s Super Bowl XX victory. It’s a size 25; a halfdollar can pass through its 1.258-inch diameter.

owner Robert Kraft was visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin and showed off his Super Bowl ring. The Russian leader, possibly mistaking Kraft’s intentions, admired the ring and then walked away with it. Kraft saved the day by declaring the ring a gift, and now it’s displayed in the Kremlin library. —SPJST—

• The biggest ring in terms of “bling” is probably the New England Patriots’ football-shaped Super Bowl XXXIX ring, which weighs in at 4.06 ounces and sports 124 diamonds. • In 2005, New England Patriots

District Three Director Johnnie Krizan presents SPJST patches to Sandra Pierce of Lodge 204, Stephenville. The patches were won by Sandra’s son Wes at the 2010 Fraternal Bowling Tournament and are to be sewn on his official SPJST letter jacket.

By James L. Lee, III, CPA

Close your eyes and visualize your dream vacation or the shiny new car that you’ve always dreamed of having. Sure, looks great! Unfortunately, for many of us, the planning stops right there. With a little planning and discipline the like- James L. Lee, III lihood of achieving our goals can be dramatically improved. Consider implementing one, if not all, of the strategies listed below to improve your financial picture. • Write down your financial goals and objectives and include deadlines. This will help you stay focused.

• Use credit cards as little as possible. Financing your lifestyle with credit cards is a trap. Reach for your checkbook instead.

• Pay off your credit cards each month. With the new minimum payment requirements of around 5 percent, consumers will get out of debt quicker. For example, on a $2,000 credit card bill at 18 percent interest, paying the former 2 percent minimum will still leave you paying 30 years from now. The interest will cost you over $5,000 on the $2,000 charge. By making the new 5 percent minimum payment, you will finish up in about seven years and the interest will be roughly $811.

• Spend a little, but save a little more. As your debts are paid off, save the “extra” cash each month. Many people are tempted to overspend with the “extra” cash. • Keep a savings balance of at least six months of expenses. This cash cushion can be used when emergencies

do arise instead of charging on credit cards. • Map out a college savings plan and begin funding early.

• Manage taxes early in the year and look for deductions, credits, and deferral of income to reduce your tax bill. The savings on taxes can be used for other goals.

• Go for steady, consistent, long-term growth in your investment. By the time you read about a “hot tip,” it’s usually cold.

• Protect your valuables and income earning potential with appropriate insurance policies including mortgage, life, and disability policies. • Invest for retirement. At best, Social Security will cover only a fraction of the money you will need for retirement. Talk to your financial advisor about preparing for a comfortable retirement.

• Create an estate plan. Many people think you must be super wealthy to do estate planning which is not true. Avoiding probate and passing assets to heirs estate tax free, may be the main goals. Your financial advisor, CPA, and attorney will be able to assist in reaching all of these goals. As the saying goes, “those that fail to plan, plan to fail.” It’s never too late to begin taking a look at your financial picture and get on board with a real plan for you and your family’s future. Milankovic Family Home in Croatia

VӖSTNÍK

Story Written by Henrietta Milan of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Henrietta Milan for sharing this beautiful story. Henrietta says that the story was encouraged by Libbie Vrla, also of Lodge 154, and also finalized and typed by her—after seeing photos and hearing the Milans’ stories for many years and trips.

The 500-year-old home of the Milankovic family in Croatia was restored by Jerry and Henrietta Milan. The Milan name was changed from Milankovic in about 1927-1928. I started writing this story in September 2006 after the All Sokol Slet in Prague, Czech Republic. After our trip to Croatia in 2010, I decided to finish. After participating in the Sokol Slet in Prague, Czech Republic, in July 2006 with eight members of our immediate family: Jerry and myself; Rome and his 15-year-old son Paris; and Tal, Lesli and their two girls, Talia, age 10, and Sophie, age 6, we traveled on to visit Czech relatives in Uherske Hradiste, then on to Vienna, Austria, for two days, and then flew on to the Adriatic Sea to Split, Croatia. We rented two cars and drove back up the coast to Novigrad, Croatia, where Jerry’s father, Joe S. Milan, Sr., came from. This is a small picturesque, medieval walled city and fishing village with ruins of a fortress on the top of the hill above the homes. The homes are built upward into the rock formation that leads to the fortress which was never taken. Jerry had two elderly cousins, Stanka, then age 94, and Katina, then age 91, (sisters) and 15 to 20 other relatives still living there. The Milankovic home is over 500 years old and made it through the 1990-95 war without being destroyed. It received only shell shots in the building’s facades and bigger hits in some roof tops. The townspeople had to leave in 15 minutes (9-11-1990) and didn’t returned until four and one-half to five years later to find broken windows, looting, trash, scum, and lifesize trees growing in their homes. We were there peacefully vacationing two months before the war. Thereafter, for five years, Serbian and United Nations soldiers lived in their homes. Our first visit after the war was in 1999. We found only half the townspeople returned. Serbian words were written on the house fronts, and there were still a lot of broken windows and empty homes. The population was

1,200 before and 400 afterwards. During those four and one-half years, we worried about our family and if the Milankovic house was still standing. The family scattered to other safe areas to live. We had no contact for quite a while, and then an English speaking Croatian lady, Jadranka from Portland, Oregon, called us to give news from the family. We sent vitamins and medications that would last four or five months and then sent more. Catholic Charities took care of them. This Jadranka translated letters telling about the seriousness of their moves and issues of the war, and kept us informed for four years until they were able to return, and that was quite an event. There were Bishops, Priests, five busloads of people, 10 to 15 cars that returned in a religious type procession. Jadranka sent a newspaper and translated the captions and stories. We found out the Milankovic house was “still standing.” Jadranka is a friend of Ivancica (cousin of Jerry’s) and to whom I’ve written to since our first trip in 1972. Luckily, she is a school teacher

and teaches English and was our main person of communication for 34 years. In 1999, our first visit after the war, we found a great deal of deterioration to the family house. The red clay roof was falling in along with the two cupolas, the eight windows and eight shutter sets were broken and missing, and large cracks in the stone header over the main double door. There were large spaces between the rock/stone walls (or what used to be stucco). We saw it needed to be saved and restored. What started to be $18,000 to $20,000 ended up being $38,000-plus. We met with some workers and left a deposit to start work in 2001. The town historian called us a few weeks later to discuss the windows. He recommended the stone should be hand cut instead of machine cut to keep the original house style in historical recognition. Then, large amounts of copper for the gutters and two windows enclosed in copper on the roof also added to the expense. Then, the marble and engraving of the historical plaque that is on the left side of the door.

Translation on marker:

“ON THIS PLACE WERE IMPRISIONED FROM l386 - 1387 CROATIANHUNGARIAN QUEEN MARIA DAUGHTER OF LUDOVIK ANZUVINAC AND HER MOTHER ELIZABETH KOTROMANIC ACCORDING TO LEGEND THEY WERE CONFINED IN THE BANIC PRISON AND CASTLE. THIS HOUSE REPRESENTS REMAINS OF THAT CASTLE AND MILANKOVICHS INHERITED IT FROM BUSLETIC-PORTADA ON THE MOTHER’S SIDE. (song) CAMILA JE UNGARSKA KRALJICA U TAMNICI BUBINA BANICA

RESTORED BY JERRY MILANKOVIC WITH FAMILY, FORT WORTH, TEXAS USA 2001”

Novigrad, Croatia

Walled city, see rock wall heading up to the ruins of the fortress. Church on right side of wall. Joe Milan was Altar Boy there and had two older brothers that rang the two bells. Large red building at end of the bay was just restored this year which is the Municipal Building.

The bells ring at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day which are big and loud, especially when your bedroom is next door. House behind the church belongs to the two elderly cousins. Their house is on three levels and they go up and down the stairs two to three times a day. Cousin Ana lives up above their house (also being built construction). All homes are built on the hillside toward the fortress (dated to 1200). A fisherman’s quote returning after the war: “Fish, again will build our houses”

It is comforting to know that the house could last another 200 to 300 years. Maybe? It did lose its character and rustic quaintness, but it was doomed to collapse into a pile of rock or rubble, without our great-grandchildren or next generations to see it. It is one of the oldest houses, number 16, which means, it was the 16th house built over 500 years ago. We were thrilled to visit Novigrad this past summer of 2010. It still is the quaint and quite fishing village, only one street across the water front, cobble stone paths between homes and grapevines coveling patios. No banks, no supermarkets, only little old ladies in black, and men sitting in the windows waving to people walking by. (A simple life of peace and quite.) This makes me think of a cute story. On one of our 1980s trips, Jerry and I with our two teenage sons were walking and taking our usual stroll to the end of the road and back. As we were passing the Milankovic home, we recognized the oldest man of the town which we had met in 1972 sitting in the window of the house next door. This man was 97 years old. He knew Jerry’s

Page 17

father as a young boy, and he was slowly raising his hand holding a newspaper and all four of us thought he was so old he couldn’t lift his arm up to wave to us. Instead, he slammed his paper down to hit a fly. All four of us laughed and chuckled hysterically over our thoughts of this weak old man not able to lift his arm. He never saw us walking by . . . This story has been told many times. Grandfather Milan (my father-inlaw) told our sons about digging cannon balls out of the fortress walls and now, our grandchildren still see them embedded into the walls. In our first trips, there were wild turkeys and donkeys that walked in the hills hee hawing and echoed in that valley. They were still around in 1997 and 1999 trips. People called them “Jeeps” as they carried laundry, wine cases, sand and dirt. The last Jeep is gone now, so Ana, our cousin, says. In 1990, we took Jeanie Mason, then age 70, and Rosie Steinman, then age 66, (Jerry’s sisters) to Croatia after the Sokol Slet in Prague (which we all participated in). It was their first time to see their mother’s homeland of

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Czechoslovakia and father’s homeland and to meet the family. Three years ago, Talia, age 7, and Sophie, age 3, Tal and Lesli and us visited Stanka and Katina. We wanted to make sure they had the opportunity to know them. Rome took his small children, Paris, age 9, and Sydney, age 1, after the Prague Sokol Slet in 2000. Stanka and Katina, two adorable cheerful ladies, ages 94 and 91, looked like 70-yearolds, charming, cute, and sweet. We have encouraged all our family to go there — it’s an unbelievable experience. To finish the story now, Jerry and I just returned from Croatia again in July 2010 with Rome, and his children, Sydney, now age 11, and Athens, now age 9. Katina passed away last January at age 95, and her sister, Stanka, age 99, was visited by us all. She gave her bedside blessings to our son, Rome, and Pauline before they climbed to the fortress and were married on the breezy picturesque hill top with Sydney as flower girl and Athens as ring bearer on July 27, 2010. All attending were invited by Rome and Pauline for a traditional Croatian wedding feast. There

were 20 to 25 older and young relatives that climbed the hill to witness the ceremony. Our 30-year-old cousin, Ana Sinovcic, was our guest from Novigrad from September to January 6 to learn about Texas history and culture and to meet her American Milankovic family. Ana’s grandmother, Stanka, is bed ridden, but has talked with Ana eight or nine times from Croatia while she was in Texas. While in Texas, Ana has enjoyed Rangers Baseball, volleyball, all football—high school, college, and NFL, country-western line dancing, museums, Milan Gallery, Mexican food, barbecue, air shows, small plane ride, Bass Performance Hall musicals, Casa Manana Theater, Milan family, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Ana returned to Croatia on January 6. The entire family of the late Joe S. and Anna Milan are members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth. —SPJST—

In December, we had several activities to attend. District One Youth’s Christmas party was at Horseshoe Junction on Friday, December 3, 2010. I had a lot of fun riding the go-carts and playing games and putt-putt golf. We had a lock-in that night as well, but I was unable to attend because I had to get up the next morning and take my SAT test for college. I heard everyone had a great time, and some did not even go to sleep. On Sunday, December 5, we honored those who passed away in 2010 at Lodge 17’s memorial service. It is always such a meaningful service. The youth put on a short program followed

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club reports on December meeting

On December 12, 2012, we held an end of year youth club meeting with the adult lodge. We had a short meeting then enjoyed a nice dinner with our family and friends. December 6 was the Temple Christmas parade. Sam and I rode in the Corvettes and had a ton of fun. We met back at the SPJST Home Office and helped coordinate the gingerbread cookie decorating station. There were lots of balloon animals and face decorating—not to mention a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Our next meeting will be held on January 9 at Flag Hall. Your reporter, Ty Stock —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club plans trip

Sunday, January 9, 2011, was the first youth club meeting of the new year. We started the meeting with a lot of excited kids waiting for the games that were coming at the end of the meeting. During the meeting, we discussed our fundraiser that was held on New Year’s Eve at the dance at Flag Hall. A big thank you to Mr. Thomas Maddux from Oscar Store for providing the hamburgers and buns! Another thanks to the Vanicek and Maddux families who worked the concession stand. We also held a bake sale that night that turned out pretty good. Great job! Another discussion that was on top of the list was trying to decide on a location for our youth club to have a nice

At the end of the meeting, we were split into two teams and had relay races that included sitting on a balloon and popping it, running, a little ring toss, some basketball, and ping pong. Then, we battled it out with a round of musical chairs. The winning Blue Team (that was my team) was awarded first choice at the prizes, but everyone got a prize. Next Meeting—February 20 at Skate Haven in Temple The next meeting will be at 1:45 p.m. at Skate Haven in Temple on Sunday, February 20 just before the District Two Skating Party. Yea, Angelina! Angelina Ringwald made a motion to have all youth members bring a new toy throughout the year for Toys for Tots. The motion was seconded, and it passed. Therefore, Lodge 47 members are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to lodge meetings and functions. This will increase the amount of toys we donate next year. So, parents, start looking for those sales. Way to show your fraternalism, Angelina!

Later that month, we caravanned to Wal-Mart to donate the toys. On December 21, we donated canned food that we had collected to

CTLC—Churches Touching Lives Through Christ. Following that, we traveled to two nursing homes and a home to Christmas carol. Singing “Silent Night” and “Jingle Bells” down the hallways put smiles on all the faces around us, including mine. We all ate at Mazzio’s and had our fill of pizza to end the evening. This year is already flying by so fast! I am looking forward to Sailabration 2011. Fraternally, Brooke Hoelscher, age 15 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth: more fun to give than receive

Dear Readers, We as SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club had a great Christmas. We went to CTLC (Churches Touching Lives for Christ) to drop off some food and drinks for the people. Then, the whole youth club went caroling at a few nursing homes. Also, everybody gave a toy to Toys for Tots. We all wanted to give instead of re-

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club Visits Great Wolf Lodge

Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas, Youth Club went to the Great Wolf Lodge on January 8 and 9, 2011. There were things to do for kids of all ages. We played MagiQuest on the first night. In MagiQuest, you carry a wand around all eight floors while reading clues. Once you figure out the hint, you find the item and wave your wand. The item

then does something: crystals light up, treasure chests open, and screens talk. The next day, we went to the indoor waterpark. There was a wave pool, lazy river, playground, and several different slides. I went on a slide with my mom and Rachel and Zack’s mom. The slide was like a tornado at one part. The moms screamed the whole time. It was a lot of fun!

While we were inside the waterpark, we could see that it was snowing. I can’t believe that we were swimming in January while it was snowing. Thank you to our wonderful youth leader, Bessie Petr, for letting us go to the Great Wolf Lodge. Fraternally, Melinda McClellan, age 12 —SPJST—

In Memoriam

In Memory of Anna Karel

Anna Satoria Karel, who, after a long illness and courageous battle, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, late Wednesday night, December 29, 2010. She is preceded in death by loving husband Milo; mother and father; three brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by loving son Rene Karel and wife Doris; loving daughter Eva Olexa and husband Tim; granddaughters Erica Anna Karel Karel, Heidi and husband Simon Erickson, Stephanie and husband David Williams; greatgranddaughter Rachel; grandson Travis Olexa and wife Jacquelyn; and granddaughter Brittney Olexa. She was a kind, loving, and gentle soul who always put God first in her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and she lived her Christian life as a beautiful example to her family. Anna was born April 19, 1926, in Daruvar, Yugoslavia, now known as Croatia, the youngest of six children. She was trained as a seamstress and left her home to go to Czechoslovakia to take a job. There, she met and married her husband of over 40 years. She was a successful seamstress who ran her own shop, but she gave it all up to escape communism. Together, she and Milo crossed the border at night into Western Germany. Later, in the refugee camp in Ulm, her son Rene was born. Later, they went to Stuttgart, and there, her daughter Eva was born. They then received an invitation to come to America. Leaving Germany with two small children and everything they owned in two bags and $60 in their pockets, they arrived in New York on January 6, 1956, then shortly traveled by train to Houston. There, they found employment, learned the language and customs, worked hard, and enjoyed a comfortable life. In 1976, they proudly took the oath to become citizens of the United States— thanks to the help and support of the Czech community and SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and the Catholic community at St. Jerome’s where she was a

member and to her wonderful, kind, loving neighbors and friends. Anna was employed by Battelstein’s Department Store in the Sharpstown Mall as a seamstress and then was promoted to head tailor for over 20 years until it was sold to Beall’s. For the next 10 years, she continued to work at Beall’s then at Palais Royal until she retired at age 70. Rosary was held Wednesday, January 5 at 9:45 a.m. with a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Houston. Interment followed at Woodlawn Garden of Memories. Memorial donations may be made to Avista Living, 9014 South Ferndale Place Drive, Houston, Texas, 77064; or Grace Hospice of Texas, 340 North Sam Houston Parkway East, No. 101, Houston, Texas 77060. —SPJST—

In Memory of Elsie Gilfond

Elsie Gilfond was born Elsie Lee Dobesh in Richmond, Texas, on June 5, 1924. Her parents were Ludvik Alois Dobesh, whose family was from Stritez, Moravia, and Bozena Ruzena Spacek, whose family was from the Moravian village of Bordovice. The Dobesh family lived on a farm in El Campo, Texas, and went to Richmond, Texas, for Elsie’s birth to be with her grandmother Spacek who was a known midwife. Elsie Gilfond When Elsie started grammar school, the family moved to Houston. Texas. Like a number of children of the time, she grew up with Czech as her first language and learned to speak English during her first grade in public school. She remained fluent in the Czech language her entire life. She graduated from Aldine High School at the age of 15 and attended the University of Houston (UH) where she received her undergraduate degree in voice and music and a masters degree in psychology. While attending the UH, she was very active in the Dramatic Club, performing in many Operettas, such as “Roberta,” “Paint Your Wagon,” “South Pacific,” and many others. At this time, she was also quite active in the SPJST Hlahol (Dramatic Club). She thoroughly en-

joyed performing on stage in plays conducted in the Czech language as well as those conducted in English. Operettas were her favorite, and by this time, she had become an accomplished singer and thoroughly enjoyed singing for special occasions at Lodge 88 and other Czech organizations throughout Texas. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Her rendition of Kde Domov Muj was particularly heartwarming. She enjoyed studying under scholarships at the Julliard School of Music and the Chicago Musical College. After returning to Houston, she gained a biweekly television program where the cast performed excerpts from Broadway musicals. She moved to New York City in 1954 to pursue a career on stage. She was chosen for the role of one of the brides in the Broadway musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” However, in 1956, she married Albert Kenneth Gilfond and followed him to Peru. Her husband was from New York City, and they met while she was attending a University of Texas summer session in Austin. Gil was in training with the Air Force in San Antonio. After completing 25 missions over Germany, he became an industrial engineer and worked for the United States Agency for International Development setting up small businesses in Latin America. The Gilfonds spent three years in Peru, nine in Venezuela, and another in Panama. While living in Caracas, Elsie started the Venezuelan National Opera Company and sang in its first season. She also made three concert tours of South America. One took her through Venezuela, Columbia, and Bolivia. Another took her through Columbia, Venezuela, and Panama. A third took her to Argentina. During this time, she became fluent in Spanish. The Gilfonds returned to Texas in the 1970s. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, she studied Czech along with other Texans at Charles University’s summer school in (Praha) Prague. Those three summers were full of many memorable experiences. Once she was overheard speaking Czech to another student on a Praha streetcar, a native Czech told her that she spoke Czech like her grandmother did. In 2004, Elsie was stricken with a massive stroke, and in lieu of spending her last days in a rest home, she was attended by her faithful friend Magdalana Arrellano (who followed

Werner and Susie Matthews Otto. He was the second of four children Clifton and Douglas Otto, both deceased; and Barbara Barski. He married Joyce Dujka on September 18, 1948. They were married for 62 years and had two sons. James attended East Bernard High School and joined the United States Army and honorably served in Europe during World War II. Mr. Otto was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in East Bernard and served on about every board position available, except preacher. James and Joyce were the owners and operators of Otto’s Dry Goods and Hardware in East Bernard for 35 years. His years of running the store allowed him to interact with people. Watching children grow up to have families of their own made him happy. He had friends of all ages, young and old, and just loved being around people and visiting. After closing the store, Mr. Otto would sometimes make two or three trips a day to town just to find someone to talk to. He enjoyed family and neighbors to stop by and sit under the carport for a “cold one.” Mr. Otto loved the East Bernard community and all of the people in it. James was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard. He was a charter member of the East Bernard Chamber of Commerce and a past recipient of the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year award, charter member of the E.B. Recreation Club and served as president of the East Bernard Water Board for a number of years. Mr. Otto was a former member of East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department and East Bernard Lions Club. He worked with the East Bernard Little League and was a member of the East Bernard Masonic Lodge No. 817, rising to Master Mason in 1956. Mr. Otto was a member of the American Legion Post No. 226 for 66 years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Joyce Dujka Otto; sons Tim Otto and wife Gail and Eric Otto; grandchildren Brandon Otto and wife Hilary and Carrie Bracey and husband Clayton; great-grandchildren Brice and Sidney Otto and McKenley Bracey; and sister Barbara Barski. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapel in Wallis. Resolution Committee Helen Kelner, Secretary —SPJST—

“A History of the Brave Czech Nation” to open at CHM

On January 28, 2011, the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple will open a brand new chapter in its history by exhibiting the entire history of the Czech culture in one big book, a large rendition of “The History of the Brave Czech Nation.” The book is over six feet tall and 80 feet long. The book will no doubt be a hit among children—especially those who already love pop-up books. They will wonder at the exploits of little cartoon men and women running around in the long distant past and traveling all the way through the section on “The Road To Freedom.” Author Lucie Seifertova ventures into 35, 000 years of Central European history, eventually culminating in the story of the Czech people and lands. Combined with real historic objects on display, children can get — on a large scale — what are perhaps their very first insights into important historic events. Ms. Seifertova’s drawing style is playful and her affection for little people caught up in history is endearing. Of particular interest is her take on the events of 1989 — the fall of communism — and the present day. One of her giant pop-ups shows Prague’s most famous avant garde landmarks — the Dancing House. But, the fate of ordinary people is never far away — in this case a beggar shown at the foot of the building on the street. Ms Seifertova says she enjoys drawing figures most, with spark and lots of humour, but also with sympathy for their fates. “I like drawing people most of all: it gives me great satisfaction when I can draw a funny face and expression. But, because I studied painting, and not illustration, I had to drop all elements of caricature for a time, and also grew to appreciate architecture and perspective, trying to depict the

Page 28

essence of objects. I try to combine a little bit of that with the illustrations I do now.” Pop-up books and comics have a tradition in the Czech Republic, but Ms. Seifertova’s immense history is different: events spill across the whole page — they are not presented in boxed windows. In this sense, her work at times approaches traditional illustration, though it remains anchored in the comics tradition through ever-present dialogue bubbles floating above characters’ heads. Lucie Seifertová is one of the Czech Republic’s best-known children’s book authors and illustrators, whose work has been translated into numerous languages including English, Russian, German and Japanese. Her award-winning “History of the Brave Czech Nation” was voted Children’s Book of the Year in 2003 and is being made into a 100-part animated series produced by Czech TV. The exhibit will continue at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located on the corner of Third Street and West French in Temple until April 1, 2011. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2010. Submitted by, Sandi Wicker CHM Executive Director —SPJST—

Back When I Dragged a Toy Duck

Welcome to SoundCzech, the Czech language series in which you can learn Czech phrases and idioms through song lyrics.

Starring this week is the legendary Jaromír Nohavica. Regular participants/listeners may be wondering why we so frequently use the songs of music of Nohavica. The answer is that not only does he write wonderfully entertaining songs, but they’re chock-full of homey idioms from the times when he was dragging a toy duck in Moravia – that is, when he was a young fellow in Ostrava: “Když jsem tahal kačera Ostrava byla liduprázdná zvečera v devět večer všichni spali bo se ráno vstávalo socialisticky se pracovalo”

When I was a kid — or used to drag a duck — Ostrava was deserted by the evening, and everyone was asleep by 9 p.m. because they would be up in the morning, working “socialistically”. As far as dragging a duck (drake) is concerned, my Czech colleagues have advised me it’s not as random as it sounds: just imagine a kid pulling a toy duck on a string. So if you’re telling a younger person about something that happened when they were still a rug rat, an ankle-biter, a stripling, you could say — to bylo když jsi ještě tahal kačera — that was back when you were still pulling the duck. Another seemingly nebulous way of referring to things that came before you would be to say — to jsi byl ještě na houbách — that was when you

were still mushroom-picking. It might not seem to make much sense, but leave it to mushroom-loving Czechs to find an analogy with mushroom picking in lots of phrases. To jsi byl ještě na houbách however,

29

refers to something that was before your time altogether, before you were born. And if you’re sure you were never picking mushrooms, even metaphorically, you can say — to jsem byl ještě na malinách — that was before my time; or when I was still picking raspberries. The naïveté of young people then is the subject of an idiom or two, maybe most often with references to milk dribbling down someone’s chin — mléko mu teče po bradě. One famous innocent is the puppet figure Hurvínek from a popular children’s theatre ensemble, whose simple-mindedness gave the phrase — vidět něco jako Hurvínek válku — to look at something the way Hurvínek looks at war. Na shledanou.

That’s what happened with the Lewis family. David was a young, wellrespected cardiac pediatrician who gave generously of his time and

talent. This included making regular trips to Ecuador to provide free medical care to underprivileged children. It was on one of these trips that he suddenly died of a heart attack at the age of 43, leaving behind a wife and three young children. While the pain from their loss may never go away, David’s family has benefited from the enduring gift he left behind. The proceeds from the life insurance he owned have enabled his wife, Sarah, to pay off the mortgage, set up college funds and maintain the family’s quality of life. “Dave had always taken care of us, and he continues to do that,” says Sarah. www.lifehappens.org/lewis Sarah Lewis and children (from left) Meghan, Matthew and Michael.
