Puppies for Sale

We sometimes underestimate people and their needs. The world is

full of people who need someone who understands. Here’s a touching story:

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. “Mister,” he said, “I want to buy one of your puppies.” “Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, “these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.” The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. “I’ve got 39 cents. Is that enough to take a look?” “Sure,” said the farmer. And, with that, he let out a whistle, “Here, Dolly!” he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up . . . “I want that one,” the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, “Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “You see, Sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.” —Author Unknown

Be Heart Healthy In honor of February as American Heart Month, here is a detailed photo of a crocheted heart on an afghan made by Lodge 92, Fort Worth member Joy Paprskar. Joy crocheted this afghan a few years ago. She was taught the art of crocheting by her mom when Joy was about seven or eight years old. “I am glad she taught me as it has come in handy at various times to make gifts and because I love crafts — plus I keep enjoying new patterns,” Joy says. “It was like a valentine to me actually that she cared to teach me.” Thanks, Joy, for sharing this beautiful photo and inspiring story with me.

Maybe there’s a special someone in your community or lodge who deserves a thank you. Take the time to show your appreciation with a letter. It will be meaningful for both you and the letter recipient. —SPJST—

Continued from Page 1.

KJZT—2,743 pins Average per bowler—548 Woodmen of the World—17,460 pins Average per bowler—545.63 Catholic Life—4,296 pins Average per bowler—537

To qualify for the traveling trophy, a fraternal was required to have a minimum of three teams entered in the tournament. KJT was awarded the traveling trophy with the highest average per bowler of 572.76. All scores were calculated with handicap included.

3

The margin between the highest average and the lowest average by bowler is 35.76 pins thus placing all bowlers on an equal level. Handicap calculation was 80 percent of 200. Bowlers who average more than 200 did not receive any handicap. In addition to the fraternal camaraderie, the tournament raised $2,932 for scholarships to be awarded to graduating high school seniors who are members of Texas fraternals. Funds were raised through entry fees, silent auction, raffle ticket sales, and a candy heart guessing game, won by Mary Ann Barta of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton. —SPJST—

Districts One, Five Sales Agents Invited to Attend Important Meetings

From the Supreme Lodge Vice President’s Department

Dear Districts One and Five Sales Agents, Four agent meetings have been set up in March for sales agents in Districts One and Five. Please try to make one of these meetings. They are not mandatory for anyone who has been an agent with SPJST for over a year, but it is advisable that you attend at least one meeting. If you have been with the company for less than a year, it is mandatory to make one of these meetings. We will discuss 2011 goals for the new program we will be rolling out in the two districts (you don’t want to miss this), Sailabration 2011 incentives, SPJST and Insurance Department news, and selling the differences between the life products. We will also be talking UL 101 to help you better understand where, when, and how to sell this product. When we are finished, we will have everyone on the same page and hopefully, earning money for you and your lodges.

Two meetings are scheduled in each district. You may attend any meeting:

District One Wednesday, March 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. Schulenburg—Frank’s Restaurant IH 10 and Highway 77 Saturday, March 19 from 9 to 11 a.m. Lodge 186, Caldwell 937 Highway 36 in Caldwell District Five Saturday, March 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. Lodge 172, Pasadena 3609 Preston in Pasadena Thursday, March 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. Lodge 196, Houston-West 17810 Huffmeister Road in Cypress

Please RSVP to me (832) 232-2049 to which meeting you will attend so I can have a head count. I look forward to seeing each of you! Fraternally yours, Delisle L. Doherty State Field Representative —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Due to the ice and snow, the Friendship Club cancelled its February 2 meeting. We had lots of ice then snow on top. Schools and businesses were closed, but by the weekend, we were able to get out. Then, we had a repeat the next week. I along with many others, really had “cabin fever,” and it was so good to get out. It seems all of our members missed seeing each other. Special greetings go out to February birthday celebrants — Alicia Castillo, Maria Gill, Mary Ann Kozel, and Shirley Martin. We will sing “Happy Birthday” to you in March. The next meeting will be on March 2 with hostesses Paula Hall, Linda Horner, and Nettie Naugle.

News I did have occasion to hear from and talk to some of our members and did learn a few things. Harold Balvin fell and broke his hip and currently is in a rehab facility close to Ridgmar Mall. Annie Whitsell is doing well and said that her children bring in food. She eats lots of frozen dinners which she can prepare in the microwave. She said that her eyesight is also getting bad, and she continues to have back problems. Let’s all keep Harold and Annie in our thoughts and prayers. Betty Landsfeld called and wants to send thanks to all her friends who

called, sent cards, and prayers to her for her recent knee surgery and recovery. Currently, she is staying at the home of her son Wesley and said that she is being treated like a queen. Good for you, Betty; just enjoy every minute of it. First, Sharron Connelly’s heating system went out during the first ice/snow days. She had electricity so she stayed in bed with an electric blanket. It turned out to be her thermostat which she got repaired, then her well water froze. I believe all is well now. Tracy Horn has been suffering from a sinus infection. She also has had plumbing problems. She had a broken pipe under the house. Hopefully, by now, she has that repaired. She was also saddened about the death of a longtime friend Fred Kubiak who died in Bremond, Texas. He and his family were Polish friends who lived in Fort Worth at one time. She said the service was beautiful. A friend from Houston came and played the violin. Congratulations to Lois Smith who was voted “Sweetheart” at the SPJST Lodge 92 Ladies Circle. Their new President Marlene Bass ushers at the 10:30 mass at my church so we always get to have a little visit. I recall writing about Ella Greer’s triplet grandsons in the past and now hear that at their shool they had ethnic day and were supposed to bring ethnic food. Naturally, they called their Grandmother Ella. For one, Ella made small kolaches, and for another, she made small pigs-in-a-blanket. I didn’t hear what she made for the third one.

Anyway, the kolaches and pigs-in-ablanket really went over big, and the kids were taking them by the hands full. If they were anything like the cakes Ella and her sister Ann make, they were delicious. I spoke with Marie Keller. She said that all of her Friendship Club friends have missed going to mass each morning and seeing each other. She said that everyone at the two St. Thomas tables are doing fine and are tired of staying home during the ice/snow days. Willie Mae Becan called to say that Kitty Rippen had eye surgery and is doing great. Kitty, we hope to see you at the next meeting. Linda Horner said that her mother Lucille Kret is home. Health care comes to her apartment during the week to give her therapy. Hopefully, she will be able to come the next meeting. Also, I heard that Mary Ann Krivanek had been sick, but that she is now back to normal and back to doing all her volunteer work. Lil Kosarek and I attended the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s conference in Caldwell the other weekend along with our friends Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger of Dallas. It was a most interesting meeting, and we learned lots about genealogy research. It was also nice to see our friend Merlene Bravenec from Temple. They always have a raffle or auction, and this time I won a bottle of Slivovice. The next meeting will be on March

Teachers in Space offers historic flight opportunity

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

In the summer of 2011, high-school science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers will have the chance to fly experiments on an early unmanned flight of a suborbital reusable launch vehicle (RLV). The Excelsior STEM mission was announced here today by Teachers in Space, a nonprofit project of the Space Frontier Foundation. Speaking at the annual Space Exploration Educators Conference, Teachers in Space project manager Edward Wright said, “Excelsior STEM will provide a historic opportunity for high-school STEM teachers to gain hands-on experience with space-science hardware.” The Excelsior STEM mission will fly on a vehicle built and operated by Masten Space Systems, based at Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California. Teachers will build exper-

iments for the mission during a Suborbital Flight Experiment Workshop that will take place August 1-5 at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center’s AERO Institute in Palmdale, California. The workshop is being developed under a cooperative agreement between Teachers in Space and NASA. NASA Ames Research Center is helping to develop educational experiment kits that teachers will assemble during the workshop. “In the past, build/fly workshops have enabled teachers and students to fly experiments on sounding rockets and high-altitude balloons,” Wright said. “Unfortunately, those flight opportunities were rare and expensive. We are about to enter a new era in space exploration. Companies like Masten Space Systems are developing suborbital reusable launch vehicles — fully reusable rocketships — that will bring about a revolution in frequent, low-cost access to space. “Suborbital RLVs will provide reliable and affordable flight opportunities for scientists, teachers, and

students. These vehicles are still in the early stages of development. Excelsior STEM will provide teachers with a unique early flight opportunity. By introducing teachers to the next generation of space hardware at this early stage, we are opening the door for many more education flights in the future. Within a few years students flying space experiments will be a routine part of STEM education.” In addition to the Suborbital Flight Experiment Workshop, Teachers in Space announced four other workshops for high-school teachers — a Space Medicine and Human Factors workshop and three Suborbital Astronautics Workshops — all to take place during the summer of 2011.

Preparing for your Tax Preparer — What do you really need to have? By James L. Lee, III, CPA

It’s that time of year many may be dreading – tax season. Whether a tax advisor prepares your taxes or you handle them yourself, it’s always a good idea to organize the necessary documents beforehand. Use this checklist to determine what you’ll need to prepare your taxes. James L. Lee, III

Employment and income records • W-2 forms for each employer • Pension and annuity statements • Alimony received • Partnership and trust income • Scholarship and fellowship awards • State and local income tax files Self-employment records • K-1 forms on all partnerships • Receipts and documentation for business-related expenses

Homeowner records • Form 1098 for mortgage interest • Form 1099-S if you’ve sold your home or other real estate • Second mortgage interest • Real estate taxes • Moving expenses Financial assets • Interest income statements • Dividend income statements

VӖSTNÍK

• • • •

Broker transaction proceeds Tax refunds Unemployment compensation Retirement plan distributions

Financial liabilities and expenses • Student loan interest • Medical savings accounts • Charitable donations • Adoption expenses • Alimony paid • Childcare expenses • Education expenses • Investment expenses Other documentation • IRA, Keogh, SEP and other retirement plan contributions • Income from other sources, such as real estate, rentals, etc. • Prior Year tax return

The common mistake many taxpayers make is to put off tax planning until the end of the year or right before tax filing. If you haven’t done so already, contact your financial advisor or CPA about the many benefits of year-round tax planning so April 15 won’t seem as daunting in the future.

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth reports on February meeting

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

The February 2011 meeting at SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club was great. There were lots of door prizes! I always like it when it’s my turn to bring items for Adopt-aSoldier. I think it’s good that we are supporting our troops in whatever way we can. All of us brought handmade valentines for the people who live in nursing homes in Caldwell. This month’s meeting was special because I brought a friend whom I have wanted to join SPJST for a long time. I think he had a good time and is going to join. Then, we will have the SPJST Four Musketeers - Dillon, Brandon, Laramie, and Mason! Sincerely, Brandon J. Powell —SPJST—

Well, it is official! I am going to be a Bearkat! I will be attending Sam Houston State University in Huntsville this fall. My parents took my friend Haley Stifflemire and me for a visit, and I am really liked the campus. I am excited to be majoring in biology with a minor in education.

It is a busy time because I am working on scholarships and getting things ready for graduation and college. I only have three more SPJST youth club meetings, so it is a little sad to think that my time in New Tabor Youth Club is about to come to an end. I am sure I will stop in for a visit when I am home on the first Sundays of the month! Fraternally yours, Colby Havemann 2007 SPJST State King —SPJST—

Emil Matula Lodge 133, San Antonio

Do Ameriky přijel v roce 1862. .Maminka kuchařila a tatínek dělal v restaurantě a umýval nádobí. Tatínek šel do obchodu kupovat jídlo a když kupoval jídlo, přišel do

Přehlédl mě, povídal mamince, aby mu dala alkohol a tatínkovi pravil, aby otevřel všechny dveře a okna. Povídal mamince, aby mně nechala našeho (alkoholu) a čekat, jestli nepřestane horečka. —SPJST—

A love of pork

In this week’s edition of Panorama, a taste of country life in Prague: city hall organizes a pigslaughtering feast on Náměstí Míru. Listen RealAudio: 16kbps32kbps; Download: MP3.

Winter is traditionally a time of pig slaughtering feasts in the country. Described in graphic detail in Bohumil Hrabal’s novel Postřižiny (translated into English as “Cutting It Short”), a pig-slaughtering fest is not for the faint-hearted. It involves seeing a pig put down and quartered by a professional butcher and village women going about the task of making a wide variety of pork dishes – blood soup, pork goulash with entrails, head cheese, pork scratchings, and a variety of sausages.

In olden days, a pig-slaughtering feast spelled prosperity – an open door day with not only close relatives, but the entire village invited to drop in for a bit of good cheer. A pig fest meant good food, drink, and merrymaking. And that is exactly the atmosphere Prague city hall aimed to create on one of its main squares – Náměstí Míru – a stone’s throw from Czech Radio. When I arrived just before midday, the merrymaking was in full swing –

the smell of roast pork wafted on the air, and people surrounded half a dozen stands where cooks demonstrated the art of making various pork dishes, most of which were on sale, to be washed down by beer and brandy.

Náměstí Míru “We’re making jítrnice – mainly from pork entrails - bits of liver, lungs and pork stock with bread, onions, garlic, and other seasoning. We mince it and press it into casings made from pork guts.” As people queued for the white and black sausages, pork scratchings and head cheese, I gave a pig’s carcass hanging out in the open a wide berth and walked to a throng of people crowding ‘round the Good Soldier Švejk who was there with a group of soldiers and clearly having a smashing time toasting the Emperor’s health. Obviously, this was no entertainment for the young generation. Most visitors were over 50, and many had nostalgic memories of pig-slaughtering feasts from their native village.

Man: We really like it here. Woman: It’s a great idea. We love to eat this stuff. Old man: It’s a bit different from what I remember because here I am on Náměstí Míru. My uncle used to have pig fests that were famous near and far, and I guess the village atmosphere is hard to imitate, but otherwise it’s very well done. I take my hat off to them. It’s a success. — Daniela Lazarová

The 22nd Annual International Military Chief Chaplains Conference was held in Prague, Czech Republic, from January 31 to February 4, 2011. This conference is the highest annual meeting of major representatives of military chaplaincy of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Partnership for Peace Programme countries. The conference was attended by more than 80 delegates from 37 countries of the world and held under the auspices of Alexandr Vondra, Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic, and Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander of Europe. Besides representatives of chaplaincies, other military and civilian officials delivered presentations. In February 1990, the United States European Command (USEUCOM) coordinated a NATO Chiefs of Chaplains Conference in Stuttgart, Germany. The purpose was to provide a forum for dialogue and discussion to enhance interoperability and foster cooperation and communication among national element chaplains during combined NATO operations. The second conference was held in 1991, at Church House, British Army of the Rhine, Lubbecke, Germany. At that conference, participants discussed expanding the forum to include nations of the former Warsaw Pact. Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Poland sent observers, and the conference title was changed to the North American/European Chiefs of Chaplains Conference. The 1992 conference held in Rome was the first annual conference to be held outside of Germany. It was sponsored by USEUCOM and co-hosted by the Ministry of Defense of Italy. This model of USEUCOM as sponsor and co-host with the Ministry of Defense of the host nation has continued throughout the subsequent conferences. Eventually, the name was changed to the International Military Chiefs of Chaplains Conference. Prague, which was the site of the 1997 conference, is the first city to host a second conference. The chaplains were greeted by

Archbishop Duka said that he has heard a Muslim imam praying in a Catholic church before. He explained that “The old Austro-Hungarian army had imams since the 1870s for its Bosnian troops. So armies in Central Europe were used to Christian ministers as well as Jewish rabbis and those who took care of the needs of Muslim soldiers.”

Most chaplains in attendance were Christian but there were a few rabbis and one Muslim cleric—Ali Eddaoudi, who was born in Morocco but grew up in the Netherlands and is now the chief imam of the Dutch army. The meeting began at the Military Church, a medieval stone building that serves as the home of the Czech Military Chaplaincy. Other events took place at the Premonstratensian Monastery, the Dominican Monastery, and the former Jewish ghetto. At the latter, a meeting was held with the

supreme rabbi. Roman Catholic services were held at the Chapel of Saint Adalbert, Orthodox services were held at the Chapel of Saint Nicolas, and Protestant services were held at Jan Hus Church. The theme was “Military Chaplain as Ethical Advisor.” Col. Brian Van Sickle, command chaplain for USEUCOM, worked with the Czech Army to organize the conference. He said: “What we hope to do is to use the opportunity to discuss not only lessons learned but ways we might think of the foundations of our ethics—is it our own faith—or is it a particular perspective of a Muslim, Jew, Christian, whatever. So we hope to share and find some common ground and to make all of us better equipped to deal with the warriors who are faced with ethical challenges every day, in the battlefield and when they come home. That’s a big, tall order, and we probably won’t get all the way there, but we’ll at least begin and elevate each of us.” From all indications, chaplains in attendance found the experience very valuable. Some very interesting photographs of the conference are found on the Facebook page of Military Chaplains in Europe. —SPJST—

2011 SPJST Member S e r v iic ces Directory It’s all about members helping members! Submit your business card today!

If you are an SPJST member and you have a business — large or small — get it listed in the 2011 SPJST Member Services Directory. The directory provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales agents and free listings to members who can provide goods and services to other SPJST members. The idea is based on the fraternal concept of members helping members. In addition to these free listings, members will have the opportunity to place a free display advertisement/coupon in the directory. Free display advertisements/coupons will be provided to businesses that offer SPJST members discount products and/or services. And, something new this year— if you, the owner, employ SPJST members, take a photo, send us the names, and we will publish it in the directory. Photo must feature SPJST members and some aspect of the business. To be listed in the 2011 directory, you must be an SPJST member. Send your business card, SPJST lodge number, SPJST member discount information (optional), and photo of SPJST members in the business (optional) to: SPJST Member Services Directory c/o Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100 You may also email your information to the Editor: melaniez@vvm.com All materials must be submitted no later than Monday, April 4, 2011.
