Lodge 107, Floresville member Tayler Korus, right, and running partner Mallorie Salazar get ready for the Austin Half Marathon held Sunday, February 20 in downtown Austin. Tayler finished the 13.1 mile course in under two hours, 40 minutes. Tayler is in her last semester in the School of Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin. She is scheduled to graduate in May. Tayler, who served as 2003 and 2004 District Seven Queen, is the daughter of Oscar Korus of Hobson and Diane Korus of Floresville.

Lodge 25, Ennis Participates in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Celebration
2002 SPJST State King Jake Holland and wife Jessica carry SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis’ banner in the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church St. Cyril and Methodius Celebration on Sunday, February 13.
Cyril and Methodius were sent to Greater Moravia in 863 to take texts of Sacred Scripture to the various Slav peoples to explain to them the true Christian faith in their own language. Pope John Paul II stated, “Indeed all the cultures of the Slav nations owe their ‘beginning’ or development to the work of the Brothers from Salonika . . . the Brothers made a fundamental contribution to the culture and literature of all the Slav nations.”
SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis was one of the many local fraternal lodges and organizations that participated in the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church St. Cyril and St. Methodius Celebration on Sunday, February 13, 2011. The day started with Mass at St. John Nepomucene Church. Jake and Jessica Holland represented SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis by carrying the

Members Helping Members
It’s all about members helping
members! You are invited to submit your business card today! If you are an SPJST member and you have a business — large or small — get it listed in the 2011 SPJST Member Services Directory. The directory provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales agents and free listings to members who can provide goods and services to other SPJST members. The idea is based on the fraternal concept of members helping members. In addition to these free listings, members will have the opportunity to place a free display advertisement/coupon in the directory. Free display advertisements/coupons will be provided to businesses that offer SPJST members discount products and/or services. And, something new this year—if you, the owner, employ SPJST members, take a photo, send us the names, and we will publish it in the directory. Photo must feature SPJST members and some aspect of the business. To be listed in the 2011 directory, you must be an SPJST member. Send your business card, SPJST lodge number, SPJST member discount information (optional), and photo of SPJST members in the business (optional) to: SPJST Member Services Directory c/o Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100
You may also email your information to melaniez@vvm.com. All materials must be submitted no later than Monday, April 4.
Fire Crackers Thanks to Mrs. Colleen (wife of State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke) for bringing this “Fire Cracker” recipe — and a handful of delicious samples — by the office last week. She gives credit to Lodge 30, Taiton Fraternal Activities Coordinator Tommy Drapela for the recipe.
Fire Crackers 1 box crackers (saltines, whole wheat, or multi-grain) 1 pkg. Hidden Valley Dressing Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 to 2 teaspoons onion powder 3 tablespoons crushed red pepper flakes 1 1/2 cups canola oil
In a very large bowl, place crackers. Sprinkle dressing mix, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper flakes on crackers. Add oil and toss with a large spoon. Cover. Toss every 30 minutes for two hours. Spring is Almost Here . . . . . . and I am so ready for warmer days and the beautiful sunshine. It’s my favorite time of year! Here’s a few quotes about the spring season.
“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” —Charles Dickens “No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.” —Proverb
“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” —Anne Bradstreet

Lodge 15, Buckholts member offers photo
Dear Melanie, I am sending you this picture that my mother Annie Mikulas Kuzel had.
She grew up and lived in the Seaton and Red Ranger areas until she married and moved to Buckholts. Most likely her friends lived in the Seaton and Red Ranger areas. Hopefully, some of the Hurta descendants still do and will claim this picture. That would be my mother’s wish. Sincerely, Hilda Burtis —SPJST—
Reader seeks Lesikar - Macha - Dusek family information
Dear Editor, My name is Richard Lesikar, age 66, born and grew up south of Temple (Sparks), son of Frank and Lydia (Kral) Lesikar, grandson of Frank and Anna (Trlica) Lesikar, and greatgrandson of Jan and Rozalie (Dusek) Lesikar. My parents were members of SPJST and we received the Vestnik, which I great up reading. During the past couple of years, I have become somewhat involved in assisting Danny Leshikar (seventh cousin once removed from Liberty, Missouri) and James Hejl of Little River-Academy, Texas, in gathering information on our ancestors and cur-
rent generations. You have probably seen the chart that Jim Hejl put together in spring 2010 of my greatgrandparents. Jim did this out of the goodness of his heart and from a request from an unknown person to him (distant relative of mine and also great-grandchild of Jan/Rozalie). She asked if he would do a chart, and he said yes! Not surprising for him. Well, our search continues, and we are in the process of seeking more information of our relatives including pictures. I’ve attached files that Danny Leshikar has put together with a lot of help from many of our relatives and during the past several months. We have substantial numbers of pictures and information about our family. (These files can be viewed at http://rakisel.smugmug.com/gallery/1 5728997_uF3sX/1/1179069038_mX3 E7#1179069036_HC9TK-A-LB) One family seems to be eluding us, and that is the reason for this email. I am hoping that through your headquarters, you can help us locate some of the John and Rosalie (Lesikar) Macha family. You’ll note in the Jan/Rozalie (Dusek) Lesikar grandchildren photo chart, that none of the five children of John and Rosalie (Lesikar) Macha are to be found. From what I’ve seen, they lived in the Buckholts area and would presume that most if not all of those born in the early 1900s were members of SPJST—most likely at Lodge 15, Buckholts. I am aware you cannot share your members’ information; however, I do not have a problem in you sharing my contact information should one of the John/Rosalie (Lesikar) Macha family wish to contact me (preferably via email) so we can get more information about their family. I work full time, so my opportunity to do personal research is somewhat limited, and therefore, I will appreciate any assistance and consideration. Possibly, you have some suggestions as to how we can reach more of the Jan/Rozalie (Dusek) Lesikar family. Thanks so much. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive As we head into the final month for our 2011 scholarship fund drive, now is the time to get your contribution to the Home Office. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the scholarship program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation the Supreme Lodge has made. Any amount you submit will be greatly appreciated. No amount is too small or too large.
State 42 Domino Tournament The State 42 Domino Tournament will be hosted by Lodge 48, Beyersville on April 2. If you will recall, all SPJST State Tournaments have been opened to non-members as well as members. The non-member registration is $15 while the member registration remains $7. Please visit www.spjst.org and download an entry form to submit to the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator’s office. Please pre-register by March 28 so that I can let the host lodge know how much food to prepare for lunch. We hope to see many of our domino players in attendance along with non-members.
Join Hands Day Hope your plans are coming along for Join Hand Day, which will be observed May 7. It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together! Many lodges have already made plans for their project. The goal for this year is 55 lodges to participate. Take plenty of pictures and get them to the Vestnik so we may share your project with other members. Again, this year, the Join Hands Day Awards Center will select 10 honorees from thousands of volunteer projects that develop youth and adult partnerships on Join Hands Day. Each winning project will receive a $1,000 check and an engraved award. Coordinating groups choose how the funds are used. Some organizations find it appropriate to donate the money to the beneficiary of the project or another benevolent cause. Others choose to save it as seed money for next year’s event. In selecting Excellence Award recipients, the most important consideration is the quality of the youth and adult partnership in planning and executing the event. Other criteria include the quality of the project to the neighborhood or to persons in need and the effectiveness of the mobilization group. I would love to see one of our local lodges receive this award. Do not forget that the SPJST Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local lodges who partner with the youth club or some other youth organization in their community. This money is to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and online with Join Hands Day. Following confirmation of receipt of your project from the Join Hands Day association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the local lodge. If you need more information for planning your project, please contact me via email cejenke@wmconnect.com or phone me (210) 413-3053. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas.
Bloomin’ Temple Festival The Bloomin’ Temple Festival will be held in Temple on Saturday, April 16. Please make plans to attend for a good time! Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
As proud Americans, the February meeting began with our members reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. God bless America and our troops and their families! It was cold outside, but that didn’t seem to bother those warm hearts that arrived. As our resident accordion player once again graced us with that wonderful Czech polka music, joy and laughter became the focus of this meeting. We missed those who were unable to attend due to health issues, and we pray for their speedy recovery and return. President Marlene Bass welcomed visitors Robert Kurtnick and Ann Marie Carminatti. We hope they enjoyed themselves and look forward to having them come again soon. As for business, finances were shared, minutes were approved, and correspondence was read. The secretary asked that corrections to the membership list be turned in to her. Please contact her if you have changes to addresses, etc. There were several passings this month, and sympathy cards were sent to Joyce Tesar on the death of her mother; Gloria Farek on the loss of her aunt; and to the family of Evelyn Spacek. Our condolences go out to all of them. Lodge 92 events scheduled for February are the Roadhouse Band (country/western dance) on the 18th, Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen of Iowa on the 20th, and the Tanglefoot Dance Club on the 27th. Apparently, there is a new exhibit regarding the “History of Aprons” on display at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame here in Fort Worth. Information on this show was presented to those present, and the suggestion was made that we might want to go as a group to visit this interesting show. Further discussion will take place at next month’s meeting as the exhibit closes the first part of April. As always, Mary Ann Krivanek shared some funny stories. Foolishness and laughter always seem to be an important part of our meetings. We all know laughter is good for the soul, and a smile is worth a million words. Hostesses were recognized: Pauline Brownlee, Bessie Ellsworth, Lisa Ellsworth, and Magdalena Kronenberger. And, I don’t think we mentioned Garland Ellsworth: he is

definitely the man in the kitchen. Our thanks to him for his work each month. We really appreciate his help. “Happy Birthday” was sung to our February honorees—Pauline Brownlee, Johnathan Cranfill, Glenn Gibson, Mary Ann Kozel, Brenda Lackey, Shirley Martin, Pauline Morbitzer, Myers, and Rose Madeleine Nieswiadomy. May they have many, many more! Door prizes . . . let me tell you it seemed like almost everyone attending won one (except me). I stopped counting after 19. Although it was not yet Valentine’s Day, there was lots of love being passed around. The prizes included multiple heart-shaped boxes of candy, a pink sequined hat with a big red heart on the front, valentine cuptowels, and so much more. Betty Krenek won the hat and wore it proudly the entire afternoon. She was the envy of the group and so very lovely. So much enjoyment, and that’s what I like about this fine group of ladies at Lodge 92. The meeting closed with a prayer, and a delicious meal was presented for all to enjoy. Fraternally yours, Joan Shropshire, Secretary —SPJST—

State Youth Director: March updates
Dear Members, Congratulations to all of the winners in the Spirt 2010 incentive program! I enjoyed visiting with many of our members at the recent SPJST Awards Banquet. I was happy to see the winning youth clubs receive checks. Now, let’s focus on the Sailabration ahead of us. I hope to see each and every youth leader honored at next year’s awards banquet! I want to see you come up to the front and accept an award for your youth club. I want all youth leaders to step up to the bridge of the S.S. Orel and embark on the journey leading your youth members to use the referral cards for new members. As soon as you receive the completed cards, please mail them to the Home Office. Remind youth club members about the “Top Youth Club in District” Award. It is a swimming, etc. party for the leader and youth members (not to exceed $200). You can do it! On January 30, District Youth Counselors and I met for our spring meeting at the SPJST Home Office. We discussed and made plans for the youth leaders workshop and casino night for the youth leaders. I am happy to report that we confirmed all district camp dates and made changes to the SPJST Youth Handbook. We completed all new business including royalty line-up for 2011. The DYC fall meeting was set for September 24 and 25 in District One. Next year, the DYC call meeting will be held in Temple at the SPJST Home Office. Youth Development Workshop By the time you receive this letter, our first Youth Development Workshop will have already taken place. The second workshop will be held at Lodge

These activities will help us build a better youth program. Please make every effort to participate. This program is all about providing our youngsters — and adult leaders —
with the tools that they will be able to use in building stronger youth clubs and stimulating greater participation in projects like our District Youth Achievement Days and Join Hands Day. There will be more information in the Vestnik leading up to Youth Development Workshop at Lodge 183, Arlington. We need the lodge youth leaders to RSVP how many youth and adults will be attending the workshop. I look forward to seeing you!

SYD Frank, ENC Executive Director John attend ACA National Conference SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) Executive Director John Hoelscher and I attended the American Camping Association (ACA) National Conference in San Diego, California, from February 6 to 11, 2011. We had a great conference. We had one morning to view the sites of downtown San Diego. John and I take credit for bringing the warm weather back to Texas from sunny San Diego! On a serious note, the conference keynote speakers, sessions, and networking with other camp directors and staff was a great experience. I attended many educational sessions
that were both interactive and fun! Other sessions delivered very powerful messages, and my only wish was that there was more time to listen to the instructor. Here are a few of the sessions that I attended: Skill of the Day: How to do Ongoing Training; 10 Theater Games That Teach Teamwork; Orientation is Done: Now What?; and What to Do With a Few: Partner Activities for 2 to 200. I am going to incorporate some of these sessions for the LIT retreat and camp. The program starts at 12 noon with lunch and introductions at 12:15 p.m. We will be ready to register you and get you checked into your cabin any time that morning. You can also plan on experiencing a great night of fraternalism with dinner and entertainment at “Casino Night on the High Seas.” We’ll finish up with the ropes course on Sunday by noon, allowing plenty of time for you to make it home to your families. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. If you are planning to bring a spouse, please let me know, and I will work with you on making arrangements. We’re going to cover a lot of ground during the two-day program, including Sailabration 2011 incentive program, first aid training with a breakout session, and YAD preparation. In addition to covering all of the regular topics such as handbook changes and camp, we’ll also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program. Youth leaders received schedules and registration forms for the event. If you have a rooming preference on who you would like to room with, please identify that person or group on your registration form. If you don’t, I will get to pick for you! In the meantime, if you have any questions about the youth leader retreat, please feel free to contact me.

2011 Leader-In-Training Retreat Leader-in-Training Retreat will be at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 10 to 12. This year, I will be covering some of the skills that I picked up at the American Camp Association Conference in San Diego, California. This will give LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills, including learning what their responsibilities are at camp and even learning something about Czech culture! I won’t give anything away, but I’ll tell you some great activities are being planned. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year. Who’s eligible to be a Leader-InTraining? LITs are active high schoolaged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and district youth counselor as responsible and mature enough to be a LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT workshop after completing a Leader-In-Training application. Forms are available from youth leaders and district youth counselors.

Mark Your Calendar: May 7 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2011 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2011. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something. When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day and online with Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, the Home Office will then forward a check

District Two youth attend skating party
Approximately 200 District Two youth, parents, and friends gathered in Temple on Sunday, February 20, 2011, for a fun afternoon of skating at Skate Haven. This yearly tradition seems to grow every year. We had 145 skaters on the floor. As an observer, I can only tell you everyone who skated by had a smile on his/her face, even as he/she was crashing down! We had members from the following lodges in attendance: 20, Granger; 24, Cyclone; 29, Taylor; 47, Seaton; 48, Beyersville; 80, Holland; 87, Temple; 182, Falls County; 187, Round Rock; and 246 Morgan’s Point. After the skating session was over, all youth sat in the middle of the roller rink floor for pictures and door prize drawings. At the end of our social, we continued another tradition—handing out $1 bills to all youth in attendance. We feel every SPJST youth is a winner. Although everyone really enjoyed themselves, there was a huge void at the social. Mrs. Patsy was sorely missed. Patsy, we want you to know that you and your family are constantly in our thoughts and prayers. We hope Albert makes a full recovery. Lodge 30, Taiton youth: back to school
Dear Vestnik Readers, Well, I hope that everyone has settled back in to their routines after the holidays. I got a couple of extra days after the winter break because my school district had threats against the kids. My mom let me stay home because they were threatening kids at my campus. It was pretty crazy having this going on. We did not know what to expect next. The staying home part was pretty cool. I got to sleep late and hang out at home. But now, we are back to normal. Unique Cemetery Art of a Czech Immigrant
When Charles Andera died in 1929, he left behind a unique legacy: hundreds of ornate distinctive cast metal crosses which mark the final resting place of Roman Catholic Czech Americans in no less than 12 states. His beautiful grave markers have been found in cemeteries from Prague, Oklahoma, to Bohemia, New York, and from Pisek, North Dakota, to Hallettsville, Texas, and in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Almost exclusively, these monuments are in Czech Catholic graveyards. Andera came to this country with his parents and several siblings in the early 1860s from Hrobska Zahradka — Garden of the Graves — a small village near Tabor, Bohemia. It’s name derived from the ancient burial grounds near which it was located. After a short stay in Toronto, Canada, the family settled on a farm near Spillville in Winneshiek County, Iowa. There in 1875, Charles married Barbara Dostal, the daughter of a wagon maker. Now a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker, Charles Andera opened a furniture store next to his small house in Spillville. His work included the construction of the communion rail and other wooden appointments in
Spillville’s St. Wenceslaus Church. Bells of the clock he installed in the steeple sounded on the quarter hour and could be heard for miles. Commuting by bicycle, he crafted the altars in the Catholic churches in nearby Fort Atkinson and Protivin. He also made burial caskets.

CCMH plans 17th anniversary celebration The earliest crosses still in existence in the Spillville cemetery were made from wagon maker’s strap iron. Charles Andera sculpted his crosses from wood and plaster of Paris, then sent this pattern to a foundry to have them cast. The corpora, of which there were several sizes, as well as the small statues which adorn two of his designs, he carved from wood. The Andera grave marker crosses are rich in symbolism. Andera’s No. 1 was adorned with a skull and crossbones. This did not indicate that the deceased had died from poison, but was an image commonly displayed by Czech Catholics in centuries past as a reminder of man’s mortality. Have your lodge* participate in Join Hands Day on May 7, 2011
*and get $100 to apply towards your project!
Mark May 7, 2011 on your calendar and make plans for your lodge to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by Americaʼs Fraternal Benefit Societies in cooperation with the American Fraternal Alliance. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. The SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs to get involved on this special day!
The first step is for your lodge to find a partner organization of the opposite generation. Who better to work with that your lodgeʼs youth club! In the event that your lodge doesnʼt have a youth club, itʼs an excellent opportunity to get your young members involved in the lodge. You will also want to involve another community service, church or school group in your Join Hands Day project. You know the old saying: “The more the merrier!” Then, working together, plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where you live. Food drives, trash pick-ups and assisting the elderly and disabled are all good places to start. Or get creative and have some fun with the idea! You can also check out the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org for ideas.
SPJST lodges that conduct Join Hands Day projects in 2011 will receive a $100 cash incentive from the Home Office. The incentive will be sent to the lodge following the registration of the event on the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org. For assistance, please contact the SPJST Fraternal Department at 800.727.7578. Join Hands Day organizers on the national level will be selecting 10 outstanding Join Hands Day projects to receive Join Hands Day Excellence Awards and $1,000. Lodges are strongly encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups.
Please complete the following Join Hands Day event summary.
