The evening’s purpose was to celebrate with members and friends who have supported the lodge faithfully through its years of progress. The event included Texas trivia in honor of Texas Independence Day on March 2, beverages, dinner with salad and dessert bars, and door prizes. More photos on page 10.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Ever since the 2010 SPJST Awards Banquet on January 29, I have revisited my love of fraternalism on an almost daily basis. A sincere thank you to the nearly 300 members who joined in the celebration held at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. The experience left me with a settling feeling of joy and comfort knowing that the seeds of fraternalism that we are sowing will bear fruit for generations to come. I’ve had that feeling before — but never quite so strong or so long-lasting. It was a great event, and I was happy to report that day on some of the many positives SPJST possesses going forward. Among them: Based on the 2010 annual statement just completed by Interim Financial Secretary Debbie Dohnalik, SPJST posted a net gain from operations for 2010 of more than $416,000. This compares favorably to a net loss from operations of $492,000 in 2009. Correspondingly, surplus increased from $13.8 million at year-end 2009 to approximately $16.2 million as of yearend 2010, representing an increase of approximately $2.4 million. On a related note, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska reported in January that almost all of the non-performing assets have been worked out of the SPJST investment portfolio. At year-end 2010, the market value of the SPJST’s approximately

$183 million investment portfolio exceeded its book value by approximately $4 million. Good job! Correspondingly, the Home Office provided some nice incentives for lodges for the 2010 year. Incentive awards presented to adult lodges, youth clubs, and sales agents on January 29 totaled more than $57,000. One week later, premium refunds to lodges totaling more than $167,000 were mailed to the lodges from the Home Office. My sincere hope is that lodges are able to direct a significant portion of these proceeds towards charitable deeds as well as activities that celebrate the worth of the men, women, boys, and girls who comprise our fraternal order. Even as sales of new life insurance certificates declined in 2010 from the preceding year, Vice President Gene McBride reported in the January Supreme Lodge meeting that sales persistency improved significantly over the same period. Persistency is defined as the percentage of SPJST’s already written life insurance certificates remaining in force, without lapsing or being replaced by policies of other insurers. While new production remains an important element in the growth of SPJST, sales persistency remains a critical factor in our success and one which the SPJST Supreme Lodge has addressed vigorously over the past three

Recognizing and Appreciating
I am always impressed when a lodge, youth club, community
group, organization, etc. takes the time to recognize and thank its volunteers and supporters. And, Lodge 48, Beyersville did just that on Saturday, February 26. And, they did it in a big way! Congratulations to Lodge 48 on a first-class event! It was very obvious that organizers worked really hard at event details to make everyone feel special and appreciated. From the friendly, smiling door greeter to the numerous, nice prizes awarded to the delicious dinner with elaborate salad bar plus strawberry shortcake—my absolute favorite dessert! All of this was in a beautifully, Texas-themed decorated hall. Thanks, Lodge 48, for inviting David and me! Youth Learn Important Skills at Workshop State Youth Director Frank Horak hosted a youth development workshop at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm on February 26. The day featured three speakers. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek reviewed SPJST’s proud history. He encouraged youth to get involved in SPJST’s various programs. Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council Executive Vice President Tommy Engelke explained parliamentary procedure and the benefits of properly conducting a meeting. 1987 SPJST State Queen and speech teacher Melissa Victorick Brown addressed the youth with pointers for getting up on stage and developing confidence for individual and group talents and royalty speech presentations. Melissa also spent time with royalty-age youth focusing on speech and presentation skills. It was a full day of learning for
youth club members who attended. If you missed out on the workshop, another one is planned for April 2 at Lodge 183, Arlington. Call SYD Frank for more details.
Prayers for Albert Prayers are requested for Lodge 47, Seaton member Albert Koslovsky who has been hospitalized since February 11. He has had numerous surgeries since then. Albert is the husband of District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky. A benefit is being planned for Saturday, April 2 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. All funds raised will go to the Koslovsky family for medical and living expenses. We just received a letter from former State Youth Director John Hoelscher asking for silent auction item donations. Items can be dropped off until April 1 at Ratibor Country Grill, located at 10226 FM 2086 in Ratibor, or the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. “For those of you who may live too far to bring an item, financial donations are greatly appreciated,” John says. “Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give the Koslovsky family.” Funds will be presented to the Koslovsky family at the benefit on April 2. Checks made payable to Patsy Koslovsky can be mailed to: John Hoelscher 2001 Waldeck Road Ledbetter, Texas 78946
For more information about donating silent auction items or funds, call John (979) 249-5674 - office or (979) 325-9831 - cell. See next week’s Vestnik for John’s complete letter and more details about the April 2 benefit. —SPJST—

Continued from Page 1.
years. SPJST’s business philosophy — to work to establish a reputation for quality among members, sales agents, employees, and management — is making a positive difference in the bottom line. Correspondingly, net cash from operations nearly doubled in 2010, from $5.7 million at year-end 2009 to $11.2 million at year-end 2010. Within the fraternal realm, SPJST and its lodges recorded multiple successes of 2010. The pages of the Vestnik helped to document the wonderful fraternal story that is SPJST. At the top of the list — or certainly near the top — another SPJST fraternalist — Susan Skrabanek of Lodge 17, New Tabor was honored in September as the American Fraternal Alliance’s (AFA) Fraternalist of the Year. I like to characterize that honor as the “Heismann Trophy of Fraternalism.” With Sister Susan’s recognition in 2010, SPJST has had three out of the last four national Fraternalists of the Year! The other two were Bob Hagen of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point in 2007 and Sandra Hoggard of Lodge 202, Jourdanton in 2009. In 2008, SPJST’s Fraternalist of the Year Ronnie Pflughaupt of Lodge 1, Fayetteville was recognized as the first runner-up for the national title. Also, in 2010, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Sister Melanie Zavodny was honored by the AFA as the recipient of their Communicator of the Year Award. Melanie attended the AFA national meeting held in September in Chicago to receive the Marcia D. Heywood Memorial Fraternal Communications Award. The purpose of this award is to honor an outstanding communicator for contributions to the communications profession and the advancement of the fraternal benefits system. As an aside, know that both the AFA and Texas Fraternal Alliance (TFA), as fraternal trade associations, continued to represent the legislative interests and fraternal management interests of the SPJST on the national and state levels in 2010. SPJST personnel continued to fill leadership positions within both organizations. The SPJST Youth Program delivered a stellar performance in 2010: The program continued to reflect the vision of its founders, those who followed, and the present-day members who administer and participate in the program. Of course, here I am referring to SPJST youth club members,
Page 4
their parents, adult volunteers, youth leaders, District Youth Counselors, and Home Office personnel. Part of that constellation included seven great district camping sessions, seven wonderful District Youth Achievement Days, and an awesome State Youth Achievement Day. The SPJST Scholarship Program continued to provide a collegiate complement to the Youth Program as the Society awarded fifty-four $1,000 scholarships to deserving collegebound SPJST seniors in April 2010. Your kind and generous donations and memorials to the SPJST Scholarship Fund helped to make those scholarships possible. Eight additional scholarships were conferred to deserving merit point winners and SPJST royalty at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day on August 7. Since its inception in 1984, more than 1,600 SPJST scholarship recipients have shared in awards totaling more than $1.25 million. Keep in mind that these totals did not include the numerous scholarships awarded in 2010 by local SPJST lodges. The second weekend of August, SPJST hosted the Fourth Annual Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend. The event is getting bigger and better all the time. More than 330 attendees enjoyed fun in the sun and fraternalism with a Mardi Gras theme. As an aside, please know that we are already making plans for our Fifth Anniversary Getaway which will be August 12 to 14 in Corpus Christi. Watch the Vestnik for details or get them now at www.spjst.org. On November 5, we had the unveiling ceremony for the November 5th, 2009 Fort Hood Living Memorial — a project spearheaded by SPJST to pay tribute to the 13 American soldiers and civilian contractor gunned down at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009. A touching ceremony was organized by SPJST and attended by approximately 500 people, including 150 family members of those killed or wounded. The site will serve to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. The initial response to the memorial project has been gratifying as veterans groups, businesses, and civic organizations have been stepping up to donate or pledge support. More than $70,000 has been raised. Approximately $500,000 will be needed to bring the project to completion. This amount includes an endowment to be established from the funds collected to provide for the maintenance and upkeep of the memorial and garden. We continue in our efforts
to raise funding for this project. In 2010, the SPJST Home Office continued to show strong support for a multitude of annual public events, most notably helping to sponsor such events as National Polka Festival in Ennis, Westfest in West, Caldwell Kolache Festival, Czech Feszt in Temple, and Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas. The Society also offered its support to an array of cultural and heritage groups including the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT), Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA), Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Czech Center Museum Houston, and Sokol. It was an honor for us to work with and to be affiliated with these fine organizations and the projects that they championed. And, what a relief many SPJST lodges received from the Texas Legislature in 2010. It arrived in the form of a ad valorem tax guideline which enabled many of our lodges with buildings — especially those in urban areas — to finally receive their ad valorem exemption. Changes enacted by the 2009 Texas State Legislature were reflected in the new 50-299 form which authorized property tax exemptions for many SPJST lodges which were heretofore unable to receive exemptions from property taxes. This wasn’t just good news — this was great news! Statistics compiled by the SPJST Fraternal Department validate a grand total of more than 8,300 fraternal activities completed by SPJST lodges in 2010. In addition, SPJST lodges contributed more than $228,000 to charitable causes and concerns in 2010. It was heart-warming to see so many lodges achieving new heights — and even making headlines . . . I hesitate to cite specific lodges here simply because there were so many involved in so many worthy endeavors. To name a few: tarok tournaments, domino tournaments, horseshoe tournaments, district meetings and fundraisers, lodge picnics, dances, turkey shoots, stuff the bus, outdoor extravaganzas, cemetery clean-ups, care packages for soldiers, auction sales, reverse raffles, polka festivals, lock-ins, beseda performances, soup tastings, bingo games — huge bingo games — hall renovations, hall restorations, reorganizations, nursing home visits, pull tab drives, food drives, pet food drives, clothing drives, eyeglass drives, and many, many drives up and down main streets all over this great state pulling the SPJST Floats — more than 40 parade appearances in 2010. And, I must
VӖSTNÍK
mention Join Hands Day 2010. Last year, 37 SPJST lodges brought together adult and youth members with other community groups on Join Hands Day to make a positive difference in the lives of the many communities SPJST lodges seek to serve. On a related note, SPJST Education and Nature Center — an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization ordained by the 2000 SPJST Convention — opened for business in 2010. That represented a great achievement for supporters in that this project — in one form or another — had been on and off the drawing board for more than 48 years. Located in Fayette County, the project embodies the ideas of wildlife preservation, conservation, and personal achievement. Also in 2010, SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, (Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center) — another 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established by the 2000 SPJST Convention — made great strides in establishing its base of operations at its newly refurbished headquarters located at the corner of Third Street and French Avenue in Temple. Organized as a result of actions by the 1956 SPJST Convention, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville are also a 501(c)3 non-profit enterprise. In March 2010, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor opened a new addition to its assisted living accommodations to meet the needs of its near-capacity resident population. Congratulations to the boards and management of the SPJST ENC, Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes for their successes in pursuing their respective missions. Thank you, too, to the many SPJST lodges and lodge members who contributed time and money to them. If you’ve been reading the Supreme Lodge minutes over the last year or so, then you’re also aware of the fact that in 2010, we laid the groundwork for the establishment of The SPJST Foundation — a prospective 501(c)3 organization, which will seek to administer to the support and development of a number of cultural, educational, and humanitarian programs and causes. By now, I’m sure you get the idea. 2010 was a great year for SPJST and for fraternalism. None of that “just happens.” Thanks to the entire SPJST Home Office team, my fellow officers, and SPJST directors for their support in helping to make 2010 a great year for the Society. That’s not to say we didn’t have our challenges, disagreements, and even a few reconciliations along the way. That’s the way it goes

Lodge 204 Stephenville: members helping members
It has been a while since I wrote a newsletter, but here goes. Our last meeting of Lodge 204, Stephenville was done on Skype, a program that lets you see the other person as well as talk to them on the computer as if they were in the same room. We still have some bugs to work out but this may be the way to go in the future, as I may not be able to make all of the meetings in the future. On the sick list for the month were yours truly—the president and wife Gracie—second vice president. I spent two weeks in the hospital with pneumonia, during all of the ice and snow that we had. I didn’t mind that so much, but I was very sick and didn’t care. On the day that I was being discharged, I received a call that Gracie was in the hospital with high blood pressure and being treated in emergency. So I called fellow member Sandra Pierce and told her what was going on. Sandra and husband Floyd came to the hospital to see what they could do. Floyd brought me home. Meanwhile,
Gracie’s son Andy came from Cedar Creek Lake to see about Gracie, and about midnight, Gracie was released. Andy brought Gracie home, but that left our car parked in Sandra and Floyd’s driveway for the night. The next day, Sandra and Floyd brought our car home. I will always be grateful for all of their help. This is the way that SPJST works—members helping members. I am still on home health care for a couple of weeks, but I am finally feeling better and almost back were I was before all of this happened. The weather is really pretty today, but a little chilly, and the north wind is blowing. Maybe we will be getting into spring soon and see the trees green out. I will like that because February is my down month, and I like spring best when everything is green, and new life is going on all over the world. Be kind to your family and friends because there may not be a tomorrow. Norman M. Kneschk President/Treasurer/Reporter —SPJST—

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss
March 2 was the birthday of children’s book author who wrote under the name Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Geisel, in Springfield, Massachusetts (1904). He published his first book for children, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937. He went on to publish a series of fairly successful books for older children, and
13
then, in 1955, an educational specialist asked him if he would write a book to help children learn how to read. Seuss was given a list of 300 words that most first-graders know, and he had to write the book using only those words. Seuss wasn’t sure he could do it, but as he looked over the list, two words jumped out at him: “cat” and “hat.” Seuss spent the next nine months writing what would become The Cat in the Hat (1957). That book is 1,702 words long, but it uses only 220 different words. Parents and teachers immediately began using it to teach children to read, and within the first year of its publication, it was selling 12,000 copies a month. A few years later, Seuss’s publisher bet him $50 that he could not write a book using only 50 different words. Seuss won the bet with his book Green Eggs and Ham (1960), which uses exactly 50 different words, and only one of those words has more than one syllable: the word “anywhere.” Submitted by, David Knape Lodge 187, Round Rock —SPJST—

Living Trusts: Fact and Fiction By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Living trusts are powerful estate planning tools that can help many people. Living trusts provide certain advantages that are not available with other estate planning devices. Living trusts are a way to manage and control property during life and distribute property at death. They are not, James L. Lee, III however, a cureall. Disciples of the living trust abound today. They tout the advantages of living trusts with the fervor of a television evangelist. Let’s separate the facts about living trusts from some of the fiction that is being advocated. First, it is necessary to understand the nature of a living trust. Technically, living trusts are “revocable inter vivos” trusts. If a trust is “revocable,” the person who establishes the trust can change all or any part of the trust, so long as that person is competent. “Inter vivos” is Latin for “during life.” At death, the living trust becomes irrevocable. Assets owned by living trusts generally are not included as part of the probate process at death. Probate is the court proceeding by which a deceased person’s assets are gathered and distributed to his or her beneficiaries. Fact or fiction, avoiding probate is always desirable? In a strict sense, this is fiction. Probate can be an expensive and time consuming process. However, many states have adopted the modern Uniform Probate Code that substantially streamlines the process. Also, there are some situations in which a probate proceeding may be desirable. Fact or fiction, living trusts always save money during administration of the estate? By avoiding the probate court, living trusts may save on the associated attorney fees and court costs. However, there are still income and estate tax returns to file and legal, administrative and asset transfer work to do. This claim is not fiction, although it is hyperbole.
Fact or fiction, living trusts save on estate taxes? Fiction. Living trusts do not necessarily save federal estate taxes. Estate tax saving provisions can be incorporated into living trusts. However, those same provisions can be incorporated into a will. Therefore, living trusts do not offer any inherent tax saving advantages. Fact or fiction, living trusts are private? This is largely fact. By avoiding the probate process, you can keep the distribution of your assets private. Also, if the trust is funded (i.e. assets have been transferred into the trust before death) the size of the estate can be kept quiet. Note, however, that some transfers, notably real estate, are always public. Note also that the probate process in many states prohibits outsiders from learning what assets are part of the estate’s inventory. Fact or fiction, a living trust can help in the event of incapacity? Fact, provided you have either placed assets in the trust before incapacity or a device exists to place your assets into the trust in the event of incapacity. Another device, the durable power of attorney, can be used in some cases as a less expensive alternative to the living trust when planning for incapacity. A trust is not appropriate for every individual. You should discuss the advantages of a trust with your estate planning attorney if: 1. you are the parent of minor children, 2. you desire privacy, 3. you own real property, 4. your estate is in excess of the applicable exclusion amount, and 5. you wish to avoid probate. The living trust is an important tool that provides many advantages. Living trusts are not, and never have been, a panacea. It remains important to work with an experienced estate planning attorney and evaluate all alternatives before adopting an estate planning strategy. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by James L Lee, III, CPA, Wealth Advisor of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC. —SPJST—

Church in Caldwell, and he was later confirmed in the Evangelical Unity of the Snook Czech Moravian Brethren Church. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. Bill grew up on his parents’ farm and ranch between Snook and Tunis. He attended grade school at Happy Hill School near Tunis and later Snook Independent schools. He graduated as valedictorian from Snook High School in 1953. During high school, he managed football and played basketball and softball. He drove a mechanical cotton picker for his father in Burleson and Victoria counties. He attended Texas A&M University and attained a bachelor of science, master of science, and doctor of philosophy degrees in geology, finally specializing in palynology, the study of fossil pollen and spores. His favorite pastime was hunting and fishing. During rainy periods, he and his younger brother would make clay dams in the roadside ditch in front of the house and catch crawfish. During the summers, he chopped, picked, and weighed cotton. One particularly hot, dry summer, he recalled standing over a six-inch wide, six-foot deep crack in the black gumbo soil and thinking, “This is not for me.” Bill spent one summer hustling jugs on a seismograph line in west Texas for Gulf Oil. At that time, he would drive the highways at night with his wife and first son looking to harvest rattles from snakes run over on the road. He found one still wriggling, stopped a short distance away, and walked back with a stick to dispatch the snake. As he approached it, a large truck drove by and one of the tires picked up the rattler and swung it through the air a few inches from his head. “God gives us many more lives than cats,” he often said. Bill married Mary Lynn Mikeska on June 29, 1957. They had two sons, William, Jr. and Curtis, and one daughter Cheryl Lynn. Bill joined Humble Oil and Refining Co. in 1962, retiring 28 years later from then Exxon Corp. He was a founding member and a president of American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists. He had the honor of having a colleague name a newly discovered spore after him. He is survived by his loving wife Mary Lynn; sons Bill, Jr. and wife Jennifer and Curt and wife Kristi; brothers and sister-in-law Gene and Janice Elsik and David Elsik; sister Sandi Elsik; sister-in-law Georgia and Jim-

Czech Easter Egg (Kraslice) Decorating Contest
What is it? Kraslice is the Czech word for Easter egg. These hand-painted or decorated eggs are the most recognizable symbol of a traditional Czech Easter. Historically, girls decorated the eggs and then gave them to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques of decorating Easter eggs each requiring a certain level of skill and artistry. Many different materials are used, including bees wax, straw (hay), water colors, onion peels, and picture stickers. There are virtually no limitations in creating colorful kraslice. Now it’s your turn. In conjunction with SPJST District Spring Meetings, youth club members are encouraged to design and create their own colorful kraslice. Youth must be present to enter and win. Please check with your youth
leader, District Youth Counselor, or the Vestnik for your district’s 2011 spring meeting date, location, and contest registration time.
Rules Contestants will decorate a standard-sized hen’s egg — or hobby egg — for the contest. Eggs may be blown, plastic, plaster of Paris, wooden, or paper mache. No raw or hard-boiled eggs will be accepted. You may decorate the egg however you like. Use your imagination! The first place winning eggs from each district will be displayed on a Czech Easter tree (Velikonocní stromek) in the SPJST Home Office Lobby through the end of the youth year. The winning eggs from each district will also be judged on the state level. The overall winner in the state competition will receive a $100 gift certificate.

Kraslice will be judged according to the following criteria: Creative Ability ...................45 Points Skill and Design...................35 Points Appearance and Neatness....20 Points
Participation Awards All Czech Easter Egg (Kraslice) Contest participants will receive a participation award, and youth club members will receive two merit points in the Merit Point System.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club hosted its annual chili fundraiser on February 13, 2011. Lodge 47 President Edwin Pechal donated all the chili spices and prepared some of the best chili in Bell County, I am sure. Deer meat was donated by Alan Sutherland and Jerry Talasek. We had a very nice
turnout, and everyone had a great time. We would like to thank Edwin Pechal, Jerry Talasek, Alan Sutherland, and everyone who brought cakes and silent auction items. You all helped to make this a successful fundraiser. —SPJST—

Organizing a Youth Club To organize a new youth club or reactivate an inactive club:
1. Request permission from the local lodge.
2. Secure at least one youth leader who is a member of the lodge and who is willing to organize the youth club. The lodge must secure at least five youth who are members of the lodge and who are willing to join the youth club and become active members. 3. Contact the DYC to meet with the youth leader to help organize the club.
4. Select a certain place and time to meet each month with the approval of the members present and lodge officers.
5. Elect youth club officers and appoint committee chairmen by the third meeting. Youth Club Policy Extensions of Adult Lodge Youth clubs at local lodges are extensions of the adult or “parent” lodge, not separate entities. They exist by virtue and because of the local lodge. If there were no local lodge, then there would be no youth club. Youth Club Reports It is very essential that a report be presented about youth club activities in

the adult lodge meeting every month. This report should include the financial status (treasury) of the youth club. While we generally subscribe to the policy that what monies or funds are raised by the youth club belong to the youth club, it makes for a better relationship if the lodge knows what the youth club is doing, how the money is being spent, and what the status of the funds are. That way, if the youth club ever runs short of funds, the adult lodge will be more inclined to perhaps grant funds to the youth club. However, if the adult lodge never receives a report on any of the youth activities and the youth club operates as a separate and exclusive unit, the adult lodge is not apt to look favorably upon any request that the youth club may have. Furthermore, the funds of the youth club are subject to audit just as the funds of the lodge are. In other words, there has to be some control and accountability on the youth club and its activities.
Youth Club Eligibility Youth clubs must maintain five members in order to receive any monetary allocations or incentive awards. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to make up meetings.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club: Pizza, Cupcakes, and Fireworks
Dear Members, We had our youth club meeting on Sunday, February 20 at my house. We had 18 members attend. We did our Vestnik projects while we waited for everyone to get there. When everyone showed up, we started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Texas Pledge. Then, Gage Cornell led us in the youth club motto. We talked about old business first then moved on to new business. New business was the district meeting with the kraslice contest, the youth club workshop/lock-in and possible projects for Join Hands Day. We also talked about a fun place

to go for our next meeting which is March 20. Some of the suggestions were Main Event, Laser Tag, and a wildlife park. At the end of the meeting, we each got up and told everyone something good that we had been doing. After the meeting was over, we had pizza and cupcakes. Then, we got a special treat - our own fireworks display by my uncle Rome Milan. Thanks, Uncle Rome; it was great! Fraternally, Sophie Milan, Reporter —SPJST—

A Shop i s like its Master
Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, the Czech language course in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song is by the group Chinasky. It is called, “1970”, and the phrase to watch for is jakej pán, takovej krám.
The Czech phrase jakej pán, takovej krám means — a shop is like its master — and it is something akin to the English phrase “like master, like servant”. If you consider that the song is called 1970 and the lyrics describe the so-called normalization era when hardline communists regained their grip on power in then Czechoslovakia, it is not hard to figure out what the phrase refers to. The master is the communist leadership, headed by then president Gustav Husak – and the shop is the entire country. Chinaski sings “we are Husak’s children” – a phrase still used when referring to the 70s generation. The refrain goes “my parents always taught me ‘don’t put out a fire that’s not burning you, watch things from a distance and never fight lone battles’ ” – some of the cautious lessons of the hardline 70s. And, of course, summing it all up is the phrase jakej pán–takovej krám.

There are, of course, a number of other sayings used when you want to draw a comparison of some sort. Czechs also have the saying “like mother, like daughter” only in Czech the phrase is jaká matka, taká Katka —a girl’s name Kathy is used in place of daughter purely for the purpose of getting the phrase to rhyme. Katka is one of the most common girls’ names. You can also say jablko nepadlo daleko od stromu — which means “an apple never falls far from the tree” or jsou si podobné jako vejce vejci — which is the equivalent of “they are like two peas in a pod”, but in Czech, you refer to the similarity of two eggs. They are jeden jako druhý or “one, like the other”. And that brings us to the end of today’s lesson. This is Daniela Lazarova saying thanks for learning Czech with me, and na shledanou. — Daniela Lazarová

~ A Bit O’Irish ~ in Prague
Prague — what a great city to be in and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Irish traditional holiday. Prague can boast at present six Irish-owned and run Irish bars, and all have something special prepared for St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick was the patron Saint of Ireland, born in 385 AD and lived as a slave for a period in Ireland, then escaped his captivity to live in a monastery for 12 years after which he returned to Ireland. He established many schools, monasteries, and churches in Ireland, and lived the last years of his life in County Down where he died on the 17th of March in the year 461.
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated the world over, with green being the theme color, green hats, green ballons, and even green beer. Prague’s Irish bars celebrate this day in big style, and one bar even has a week long Irish music festival to embrace St. Patrick’s Day in Prague, with both local and visiting bands from Ireland participating. Prague presently has six “real” Irish pubs, that is, pubs owned and run by Irish people.

Day Trips: Small community keeps Czech traditions alive By Gerald E. McLeod Friday, January 28, 2011 Austin Chronicle
The Frydek Grotto commemorates a miraculous event and serves as a cohesive element for a small farming community south of Sealy. There isn’t much left of the community of Frydek except St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a few houses surrounded by fields and pastures. Established in 1895, the town was probably named after the Moravian city of Frýdek-Místek. At its peak, between 1901 and 1906, it was a modest settlement with a cemetery, post office, school, store, dance hall, and church. Ethnic Czechs from northeastern Bohemia began pouring into Texas in the early 1850s. First a trickle of landless peasants came for the inexpensive land, and then a flood that included merchants and intellectuals continued

into the 1930s. Many of the immigrants settled on farms in the area around Austin, Lavaca, and Fayette Counties and throughout Bell and McLennan Counties. Many of the original families still have representatives living in the area. Individually self-sufficient, as a group the Czechs came with a strong sense of family and community. They formed fraternal organizations like the SPJST, known in English as the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. The organization, based out of Temple, still provides insurance to its members. In the beginning, these organizations served as social clubs, provided assistance to immigrants and one another, and provided protection from hostile Anglo-Americans. Since 1890, the St. Mary’s church has been the center of the community. Besides the lovely stone sanctuary, the church has a large fellowship hall and school. In the center of the tree-shaded property is the hand-built grotto. Grottoes are natural or man-made caves, associated in religious symbolism with the cave that Jesus was buried in after being crucified. One of the most famous in the United States is the Dickeyville Grotto in Wisconsin. Texas has well-known grottoes on the grounds of Catholic churches in Windthorst near Wichita Falls and Hostyn south of Schulenburg. Construction of the Frydek Grotto began soon after the end of World War II. Of the 65 young men from the parish who served in the war, all of them returned. It was a very unusual statistic for any community. In celebration of the soldiers’ return, the veterans and their families traveled to the Texas Hill Country to get limestone rocks that looked like parched bones or were pockmarked with weathered holes. Since 1949, the church has celebrated the last Sunday of April as a day of remembrance and thanksgiving. The men of the church make sausage, the women bake kolaches, and everyone enjoys the polka bands and festivities. The public is always welcome to join in the fun.
