Got a business? Send us your card today!
The 2011 SPJST Member Services Directory is all about members helping members! If you are an SPJST member and you have a business — large or small, get it listed in the 2011 SPJST Member Services Directory. The directory, which will be published in late spring/early summer, p r o vides a comprehensive listing of SPJST s a l e s agents and free listings to members who can provide goods and services to o t h e r SPJST members. The idea is based on the fraternal concept of members helping members. In addition to these free listings, members will have the opportunity to place a free display advertisement/ coupon in the directory. Free display advertisements/coupons will be provided to businesses that offer SPJST members discount products and/or services. And, something new this year—if you, the owner, employ SPJST members, take a photo, send us the names, and we will publish it in the directory.
Photo must feature SPJST members and some aspect of the business. To be listed in the 2011 directory, you must be an S P J S T m e m b e r. Send your business card, SPJST lodge number, and SPJST member discount information (optional) to:

How Rich Are We?
One day, a father and his rich family took his son on a trip to the
country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be. They spent a day and a night on the farm of a very poor family. When they got back from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “Very good, Dad!” “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Yeah!” “And what did you learn?” The son answered, “I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden; they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard; they have a whole horizon.” When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless. His son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how ‘poor’ we are!” Isn’t it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor, and a positive attitude towards life — you’ve got everything! You can’t buy any of these things. You may have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, etc.; but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing! —Author Unknown

ID Ten T Error I had a problem yesterday, so I called Eric, the 11-year-old next door whose room looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, “So, what was wrong?” He replied, “It was an ‘ID ten T’ error.” I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, “An ‘ID ten T’ error? What’s that? In case I need to fix it again.” Eric grinned . . . “Haven’t you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?” “No,” I replied. “Write it down,” he said, “and I think you’ll figure it out.” So I wrote down: ID10T I used to like Eric . . . —Author Unknown

District Seven to Join Hands for Food Bank of Corpus Christi District Seven is sponsoring a Join Hands project in conjunction with our spring meeting on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at 3:30 p.m. District Seven is the first district to do this! We are asking lodges to report this project to the Home Office as their Join Hands Day event. You will be joining hands with nine adult lodges and three youth clubs in our district along with several organizations in South Texas. Contact the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator’s Department. Once you have registered your project with them, you must also report it to www.joinhandsday.org. When the State FAC receives confirmation that you have registered your project with them, the Home Office will send your lodge a check for $100. You can donate all or part of those funds to help with this project. If you don’t receive this check before April 10, you may have to take $100 out of your treasury and replace it when you do get your check. If your lodge already has a project planned, you can do this in addition to your project by bringing some
groceries to the district meeting. Our Join Hands project will benefit the Food Bank of Corpus Christi by collecting non-perishable items, cash, or checks. Our goal is $1,000 and/or 1,000 pounds of food. The Food Bank of Corpus Christi is a member of FEEDING AMERICA. It serves 11 counties in South Texas. For every dollar donated, the food bank can distribute $16 of food. Approximately 19,000 people receive assistance in any given week. They deliver food to 56 agencies in nine surrounding counties. Lodge 15 Buckholts plans restoration
The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Douglas Williams. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jim Wallace, followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. All officers were present except for First Vice President Scott Brandon and Second Vice President Adolph Jurca. We had nine members and two guests present. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked them for coming. The secretary and treasurer each gave their reports, and the reports were accepted as read. Expenses were greater this past month due to the extremely cold weather. We had to replace a lot of frozen pipes. This was the worst winter in a long time. It was Jere Wallace’s birthday so we sang “Happy Birthday” to her, and Regina Peevey presented her with a delicious birthday cake which we all enjoyed. The committee on the Restoration Project did meet with Heimsath Architects from Austin. Before we can proceed with the master plan, we are required to obtain an exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Rev-

The food was delicious with the barbecue dinner catered by Jim and Jere Wallace; a wonderful assortment of kolace from the Columbus Bakery donated and delivered by Monty Williams; plus, all the other assortment of sweets, pies, banana pudding, and cakes. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and we enjoyed doing it. On the 50-year pins, we voted to mail directly to the out-of-area member and the remainder to our lodge. Frank Tomascik made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Hilda Burtis. Motion carried. Robert Leshikar is in charge of the meal with Juanette Susan and Alice Wuensche volunteering for kitchen duty. We need domino players as well, so spread the word. Let’s all pitch in so that we can attend the Koslovsky Benefit that evening. The members voted to give $150 to the Taylor Relay for Life with matching funds from the District Two Director’s discretionary fund. We had our first meeting of the year due to the snow and ice last month. It was good to get out and see our friends again. Our theme was “Texas, Our Texas.” Thanks to Anna Marie Eszlinger and Alta Partridge and every one who helped with the decorations. It was really Texas-style with cowboy hats, boots, bandanas, and lassos. Some of the members wore cowboy hats, denim, and cowboy boots. President Deanna Houpy called the meeting to order. Evelyn Trojacek led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Edwin Vitovsky, brother of Evelyn Trojacek. Please keep in your prayers several members and/or their relatives who have health problem issues: sister Martha Frnka; John and David Becan, husband and son of Jeraldine Becan; Emil Chmelar, husband of Ruth Chmelar; Bob Liska, son of Bob and

Program Chairman Anna Marie Eszlinger gave a brief summary of the book Brian Vanicek gave to us for our 75th Anniversary titled “Czechs Journey into Moravian Texas.” Evelyn Trojacek read some humorous stories. We had our laugh for the day. I remember one. The preacher asked where the post office was. He said he was new. He then asked the boy to come to church Sunday, and he would help him find Heaven. The little boy said I don’t think you can help me find Heaven if you can’ t find the post office. Carolyn Nemec provided the cowboy blessing. A motion was made, and we adjourned with our quotation: “Mejte se vzdycky radi”—Always love one another. The do vyhry gifts were drawn and handed out. The Circle will furnish the ham for the luncheon at $1 per person. Members are requested to bring potluck side dishes. You may bring a small gift for the do vyhry if you wish. Hostesses for the day were Lucy Martinez, Helen Kubala, Jean Sparkman, Hattie Scroggins, and Theretta Praslicka. Our thanks go out to them for their hard work and preparation, and it’s wonderful that the ladies all take turns in the kitchen and enjoy participating. March birthday celebrants were sung to and their picture was taken. For those who didn’t make it to the meeting, we also send our happy birthday wishes to you. And, lastly, a couple of other items to note was that birthday girl Willie Mae Becan won a door prize, and Monalee Hattendorf was the big winner at bingo. How fun was that! Until April showers come, may the winds of March not blow you away.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
We didn’t have a parade or beads, but we did have a King Cake so we celebrated Fat Tuesday at our March 8, 2011, meeting of the Ladies Circle. Oh my, there was food and more food, and one couldn’t stop without trying all of it. There were so many choices that a second table had to be brought out to hold the selections. Joe Kozel, our resident accordion player, even sang while he played. I’ll just bet he thought no one noticed, but we did. The meeting was called to order and visitors Robert Kurtnick, Allison Hollawach, Judith Allcock, and Janie Lopez were warmly welcomed. Several members who had not been attending returned. It was good to see them back in their places. Also back in her spot after a long illness was Lucille Kret. Thank you notes came in from Kitty Rippen who had eye surgery and Lucille Kret. Business was conducted as usual, and it was noted that several of our guests had joined us and paid their dues. Members were asked to share information on illnesses, birthdays, personal activities or projects. The secretary needs “tidbits” to put into the
Vestnik. So here goes, and I hope I’ve not left anyone or anything out. It was learned that Albert Kubala had been taken to the hospital that morning unexpectedly; Mary Ann Krivanek was absent due to her husband’s health problems; Kitty Rippen had cataract surgery and her eyes are doing much better now; Mary Ann and Joe Kozel have a new granddaughter Abigail Grace; Don Morbitzer has been under the weather; Monalee Hattendorf was to have surgery on her leg once more on March 10; Joan Shropshire lost her Aunt Josephine Simek in Temple; and Joyce Tesar’s brother passed away just six weeks after she lost her mother. I’m certain with so many ladies in our group, there were many more things that were not shared with me this time. We pray for each and every person who has health or family issues and losses. Lodge 92 events scheduled for March are Dave Alexander, western swing band, March 18; Don Peachey Orchestra of Burnett, Wisconsin on the 20th; ballroom dancing sponsored by the Tanglefoot Dance Club on the 27th. (Dress is evening attire.) Some of our ladies plan to take in the “History of Aprons” on display at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame here in Fort Worth. It should be interesting and informative from what we hear. The time and date are yet to be determined.

Lodge 191, Lufkin: Barbecue and Brainstorming
Gardening tip
Vegetable gardens make great additions to any home garden, but home gardeners should know that not all vegetables should be planted yearround. Vegetables vary as to their optimal growing conditions, which often hinge on climate. For example, tomatoes are popular among home gardeners. For the best tomatoes, the soil should be warm and the sun above should be hot. If planted in the winter, tomatoes aren’t likely to ripen, and they could very well attract harmful garden pests. Some vegetables, however, actually prefer colder climates. Cauliflower, for instance, is not comforted by hot summer sun and will likely wilt before reaching maturity if planted in the summertime. Instead, cauliflower often thrives with colder soil and steady rainfall. When planting vegetables in a home garden, homeowners should always consider seasonal changes. Such changes enable gardeners to have fresh vegetables at their disposal almost year-round. (MS) —SPJST—
Following a delicious barbecue dinner provided by the SPJST Home Office and served by several members of the SPJST Fraternal Department, Lodge 191, Lufkin officers and members gathered, discussed, and exchanged many excellent ideas and brainstormed on how to get more members involved with activities of the lodge and ways to recruit new and younger members. The day ended with many great ideas and a new outlook for the future of the lodge.
Counting stars in the sky
How many stars are out there? It’s a question that’s puzzled humans since we all lived in caves. Up until recently, scientists put the count at approximately 100 sextillion (that’s a 1 followed by 23 zeroes), but a Yale University astronomer says that galaxies with an elliptical shape, instead of a spiral configuration like our own galaxy, contain more red dwarf stars than was previously thought. According to the journal Nature, that kicks the estimate up to 300 sextillion, although other scientists have questioned some of the astronomer’s as-
sumptions. Either way, that’s a lot of strange new worlds. —SPJST—

Lodge 107, Floresville Hosts Annual Banquet
Sunday, March 13, 2011 • SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville Hall • Photos Submitted by Bob Bayer and Roxy Bertrand
Lodge, 107, Floresville held its annual banquet on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at the lodge hall. There were 42 guests and members present. It was a very light turnout. Only one of our 50-year members showed up to receive his 50-year pin. None of the new members who were written up in 2010 showed up. Invita-
tions were sent to all including Lodge 271, Laredo and Lodge 93, Hobson. The lodge fraternal activities coordinator handed out the Every Day Hero pins to 28 members. Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney and wife Alene and Wilson County Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt, Jr. and wife Sandra were special guests.
Gladys Lobner of previous Lodge 93, Hobson—which is now part of Lodge 107, Floresville—was to receive her Fraternalist of the Year award, but she was not in attendance. The cooks did an outstanding job on the meal consisting of barbecue chicken, green beans, barbecue potatoes, and a fresh salad, with all kinds
of desserts brought by the members. Director Bob Bayer had a nice report on the lodge and its history. He reminded everyone that in 2012, Lodge 107 will celebrate its 100th year anniversary on May 12. Fraternally, Bob Bayer, FAC —SPJST—

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club reports on February meeting
Our last meeting was held on February 13, 2011, at the lodge hall. We met later in the day after beseda practice. Our youth leader had arranged for us to make rice crispy treats for a valentine project. Vanessa, Cierra, and Hailey all helped Youth Leader Jennifer in the kitchen making the rice crispy treats. Once the treats were made, we went ahead and started the meeting. President Vanessa called the meeting to order. We discussed old and new business, upcoming events, fundraisers, and some future outings. At the end of the meeting, all youth members got to cut out a heart-shaped rice crispy treat! We had icing for the ones who wanted to decorate their heart. All youth enjoyed making/decorating their heart treats. While youth ate their treats, Jen-

Lodge 92 Fort Worth youth: rain, sleet or snow off to SPJST we go
Dear SPJST Members, The past month has been controlled, largely in part, by Mother Nature. We’ve almost missed more school than we’ve attended. We had four straight days of ice and snow that kept us out of school one week. Then, the very next week, we had another snow day! We, as kids, enjoyed that. As SPJST members, we feel it is our duty to attend our youth club meetings.
Rain, sleet, or snow, we’ll get to the lodge (or the bowling alley). This past month, we proved that was the case as we all attended Cowtown Bowling for a full day of strikes, spares, splits, and, the notorious, gutter balls. While we may not be PBA bowlers, we all had scores of fun and enjoyed being together for our monthly youth meetings. For our February meeting, we gathered around in a fraternal meeting to build crafts and to share in the love of Valentine’s Day. The second we walked in the door, we stretched out a little bit and got down to the grind. It was like Santa’s workshop two days before Christmas. And, we all know those elves procrastinate! It was everyone grabbing bags and filling them up with candy as fast as we could so that we could go and hand them out to our adult members and just give them a little something to show that we care. Today, we have the ability to join together to prepare some of our lodge family’s famous burgers as we work the kitchen at our annual Barefoot Becky Dance! The excitement in the kitchen is overwhelming to see because of the youth club members’ everlasting

urges to serve the dancers. All money goes to our youth club funds. These last two months have been very uplifting. Just seeing the joy in all of our friends and family as we attended our wonderful meetings and dances—we are looking forward to the next few months for we are getting ready to enter our spring and summer portion of the SPJST year. We are slowly but surely preparing for Youth Achievement Day (YAD) and camp at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). Special thanks to adult lodge member Al Kercho for donating $20 to our youth club to arrange for this month’s dance! Jak se mas! Fraternally yours, Jackson and Katherine Durham —SPJST—

Schůzi předsedal a vedl ji náš vicepresident Freddie Kaluža. Vicepresident zahájil schůzi, přivítal přítomné, složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí a uctili památku zemřelých členů a členek u našeho řádu. V červnové schůzi budeme oslavovat padesátiletá výročí členství u naší jednoty pro tyto oslavence: Patricia Price Arms, Ray Bartosh, Jimmy A. Chupík, James Al Kaluža, Stephen Marek, Jimmy Ray Matúš, Raymond Matúš, Frances L. Soukup, Timothy L. Soukup, Ann Marie Šrubář a Mona Zahirniak.

Obuvnické muzeum, Zlín shoe museum in Zlin
Are you into high heels? Check out the “Chopin” shoe and others at the footwear museum in Zlín. Women with a passion for shoes should not miss out on a visit to the footwear museum in Zlín. Out of the original need to protect our feet from cold, heat, moisture, and dangerous surfaces, shoes became an inseparable part of our lives. Already at the beginning of human h i s t o r y, shoes became a characteristic fashion item, an artwork inspiration as well as an artwork itself. Results of their enthusiasm for collecting established a basis of the later collection of historical and exotic footwear. The collection was first presented to the public in 1931 so it can be said that the Shoe Museum in Zlin is one of the oldest museums in the world with this kind of specialization. The collection reflects footwear de-

velopment from the earliest periods of the Czech history up to the present days. The earliest years are d o c u mented by replicas made in Bata modelling department according to original pictures and patterns. The replicas received their names according to the presumed owners, and so you can see a replica of a riding boot of King Wenceslas, high boots owned by Albrecht von Waldstein, Bozena Nemcova’s textile ankle-boots or elastic-sided shoes worn by Bedrich Smetana. The oldest original footwear dates back to the first half of the 17th century.
Among the wide variety of shoes on display is the platform shoe which was all the rage in the courts of Europe in the 15th to 17th centuries. The “Chopin,” as it was called, was neither practical nor comfortable – soaring to a height of up to 40 centimeters which made walking impossible without the help of mandatory walking sticks or two servants to help one along. It is said to have originated in Venice, and soon became the calling card of the nobility and those who aspired to a high place in society. A collection of footwear from various foreign nations is quite unique. It contains different types of footwear coming from all continents in the world. The most unique is probably a set of textile slippers from a feudal China. Also, a collection of Ataman boots bought in 1911 by the last owner of the Buchlov estates is very interesting as well as a set of African sandals
Page 20
and a quite extensive collection of footwear from India. Most attractive exhibits for a common, non-professional visitor are probably the sandals made from ostrich feathers and from human hair. These sandals were used in central Australia for ritual purposes. And what is mostly admired by the professionals? Probably an embroidered slipper dating back to the Thirty Years’ War or a slipper called “cothurni,” generally regarded to be preserved only in 20 samples in the whole world. The largest and probably also the most comprehensive collection of our Shoe Museum is that of Bata company’s own production. This collection reflects the production development since the establishment of the production factory in 1894 up to 1945, when the whole production plant was nationalized. A cross-section of the Bata production enables the visitor to follow the history of one of the best-known Czech companies. People have worn shoes since time immemorial—out of necessity, but also for a show, on working days as well as on holidays, in joy and in grief. Although we may not realize it, the footwear is a fantastic source of information on ourselves and on the human history generally. There are all different kinds of things in the world, but not every one of them is interesting, nice and purposeful at the same time. Variety of shapes and colourful beauty of these small “treasures” exhibited in our Shoe Museum will certainly excite a visitor of the end of the millennium. Come and see for yourselves the newly built exhibition of all these shoes, boots, and slippers.

History of Polka
The polka was initially a Czech farmer dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia). Polka is defined as a lively couple dance of Bohemian source in duple time; was a basic pattern of hopstep-close-step. The name of the dance (pulka) is Czech for “half-step,” relating to the swift shift from one foot to the other. Anna Slezak, a peasant girl, invented the step, in Labska Tynice in 1834. The polka was first introduced into the ballrooms of Prague in 1835. The music is played in 2/4 time (1 and 2) and sounds cheerful and playful. The musical band of the Prague

Sharpshooters, a military unit, brought to Vienna, in 1839. There, both the music and the dance met with extraordinary approval.
In 1840, at the Odeon Theater in Paris, Raab, a dance teacher of Prague, danced the polka with tremendous applause and was soon the preferred dance at all the ballrooms. The dancing teachers of Paris seized on the new dance and sophisticated it for their salons and ballrooms. The popularity of the polka spread quickly into the other country in Europe. When it came to the United States, it was taken up by the country western set, and today is still danced in country competitions. The polka is one of dances, originating in the 19th century, which has survived. After the initial popularity, the polka progressively declined and obtained a low point with the apparition of ragtime, jazz, and the newer dances of the early 20th century. After the Second World War, however, Polish immigrants to the United States assumed the polka as their “national” dance. http://www.aboutdanceschools.com
