District Two Youth presented a new look to Cooper Farm’s bus at the district spring meeting held March 20 in Taylor. “When we went and saw Cooper Farm last fall, I knew something had to be done with the bus,” Lodge 47, Seaton member Chaundra Mitchan recalls. “We couldn’t have our SPJST campers riding around in that sad-looking thing!” So Mrs. Mitchan spoke with her employer — Tex Blast in Temple. Tex Blast and the youth from District Two teamed up “to make that sad-looking bus look pretty!” Tex Blast blast, primed, and painted the bus and had Print It in Belton apply the lettering. was brought in to refurbish about 10 of the most damaged seats inside the bus. And, the bus has already caught the eye of many people on its way back to Cooper Farm from Taylor, ENC Executive Director John Hoelscher says. “Donations like this sure do make Cooper Farm have a better appearance. I sincerely thank the youth of District Two for their very generous donation of a paint job for the bus. I hope that all youth enjoy riding in style to the lake this summer!” “I hope everyone in the state notices the new bus and will remember the camp for all of its needs,” Mrs. Mitchan says. —SPJST—

Join Hands Day is May 7 Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez reports that 14 lodges and/or youth clubs have submitted plans for Join Hands Day projects. The Home Office is once again offering a $100 incentive to lodges that participate in Join Hands Day. Tammy says that there is still time for lodges/youth clubs to submit the Join Hands Day incentive request. “But, lodges and/or youth clubs must register their projects online to receive the incentive,” Tammy stresses. Visit www.spjst.org in the fraternal section to download the incentive form and for details on registering your project. Held on the first Saturday in May, Join Hands Day is the fraternal national day of service when youths and adults work together to plan and implement projects that benefit their local communities. Join Hands Day gives Americans the opportunity to reach out to people they don’t know, to connect generations and to develop new relationships. Join Hands Day also is the only day on the national Seasons of Service calendar that targets and develops youth/adult relationships through neighborhood volunteering.

America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies are the creators and sponsors of Join Hands Day. These not-forprofit organizations are a unique, charitable force of nearly 9 million people in 30,000 local chapters, making it one of the nation’s largest member networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer service opportunities. America’s fraternal benefit societies are represented by their own trade association: the American Fraternal Alliance.

Happy Birthday, Joe! We send happy birthday wishes to longtime Vestnik contributor and supporter Joseph D. Nezval, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on March 18. Joe is a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard where he serves as president.

10, 2011. As we didn’t meet in February due to the cold weather, it seemed like a long time since we were together. Dorothy Prachyl, Ann Clagett, and I arrived at 8 a.m. We arranged table and chairs and started stretching Dorothy Prachyl’s quilt. Before we finished stretching, Eleanora, Irene, Dorothy J., Martha, Pat, and Margaret arrived. We had quilters all around. It was really nice. We talked and laughed a lot. We quilted until 12 noon and by then, we had 21 members and three guests — Joe, Julius, And Dorothy Adams. President Dorothy led the blessing, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you for the wonderful dishes, and thank you to Libbie, Joyce, Vickie, Ann, and Bertha for clean-up. Quilters returned to quilting, and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Jerry Hosek and Chad Ryan. The minutes were read by Pat Fowler. She then installed the officers: President Dorothy Prachyl, Vice President Ann Clagett, Treasurer Lil Kosarek, and new Secretary Margaret Martinek. We thank them all and know that our new secretary will be great. Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Minutes and treasurer’s report were approved. The following same ladies were appointed: Eleanora Pelzel - sunshine lady; Pat Fowler historian/parliamentarian/quilt scheduler, and Georgie Morales - reporter. Irene Prachyl made a donation to

the Circle for quilting her quilt in January. She also gave all the quilters a precious book marker which is really neat that she made from a calendar from Rome, Italy. Sunshine Lady Eleanora reported that she mailed a birthday card to Libbie Wisniewski in February. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Sidney Bridewell and Georgia Wensowitch. Pat announced that we will quilt for Lil Kosarek in April, Pat Fowler in May, and Eleanora in June. Joyce Ehrenberger introduced her guest and sister-in-law Dorothy Adams. We enjoyed her — come again sometimes. Ann Clagett volunteered to make copies of blank raffle tickets for our use. Bertha Podhrasky talked about and handed out sheets regarding Dallas Sokol Hall Friday Czech movie night on March 25, April 22, and May 20. Everyone is invited. If you need more information, email Bob Podhrasky at pod@att.net. Libbie Vrla also announced Fort Worth Sokol Hall was having a Czech movie night on March 20. Libbie also talked about that she and sister Lil were coming or going somewhere, and they saw a Cabela’s. They made a u-turn as they had read about and heard many things about Cabela’s. Libbie said that she was glad that they made the u-turn as it was really something to see. If you ever get the chance, she said you must stop and visit. It is worth your time. We had a couple of items donated for a raffle. It was discussed, and Pat suggested that we have the raffle when we have our elephant sale. Thank you went out to Cathy Vanden Eykel for donating paper plates, glasses, and napkins. Thank you to Sidney Bridewell for a box of items

for the elephant sale and money donation. Sidney will be gone to Wisconsin again for the summer. We will miss you. We hope we receive a letter as always. I must thank Julius Podhrasky for taking out the trash, and Vickie Vlk for taking the dirty towels to wash. In my last letter, I wrote something incorrectly. Libbie Elsik wrote us a lovely note and sent her and Vickie Kohn’s dues for 2011. Sorry, Libbie. We missed Ella Mae Zmolek, but I did talk with her, and she sent hello to everyone. She misses us. We have also missed Mildred Krajca and hope that her sister Janie Thorton is better by now. Janie has been in the Longview Hospital, and Janie’s son and her husband have both been in the hospital. We wish them all a speedy recovery. We understand Bessie Laznovsky is coming along. We miss you, and hope soon you can come be with us. Libbie Vrla brought the door prize — a basket of goodies from Fort Worth — which was won by Irene Prachyl. President Dorothy thanked everyone for coming and asked if they would help put the table and chairs back in the hall. She reminded everyone that the next meeting will be April 14. Then, she adjourned the meeting. Other News Congratulations to Josephine Kubin. She is a new great-grandmother to Luke Edward who was born February 22. He is the son of Matthew and Lauren Kubin. Top 10 Features of Long Term Care Insurance By James L. Lee, III, CPA

Will you outlive your resources? As health awareness increases and medical care improves, we can expect to live longer than any generation before us. As we live longer, the need for care in our latter years increases. Illness and injury can be prevented and cured, but the James L. Lee, III odds are we’ll still need assistance with the activities of daily living. Long term care is a reality. Long term care insurance can be the means to provide the necessary support. Why consider long term care insurance?

10. LTCi can provide coverage in the home or in alternative facilities, like assisted living or adult day care facilities. 9. LTCi gives you a choice of provider. You’re not limited to certain government-approved facilities. In fact, some policies even allow a trained friend or family member to provide care. 8. LTCi can provide a benefit for life so you won’t run out of coverage. LTCi protects against catastrophic risk. 10 percent of us will need more than five years of care ($250,000 in today’s dollars). Care for life could cost millions. What asset(s) you own for other purposes will you liquidate to pay for coverage? 7. The cost of LTC continues to increase but you can buy LTCi with an increasing benefit to help counteract the effects of inflation. 6. Some LTCi policies offer the ability to pay for coverage over a certain number of years so you don’t have to pay forever.

5. Some LTCi policies can guarantee the premium will not change for a certain number of years. 4. LTCi is available with certain life insurance and annuity products so, if you never need care, you can use the money you’ve invested or pass it to your heirs. In other words, you don’t have to choose to “Use it or lose it.” 3. LTCi offers several tax advantages. Premiums are includable as a medical expense on individual income tax returns. Company-paid LTCi can be deductible by the company and not taxable to employees. Qualified LTCi benefits are tax-free. 2. LTCi can provide benefits for pennies on the dollar. A 65-year-old could pay $2,000 per year for a $3,000 monthly benefit. One year of care (12 months x $3,000/month) would be worth 18 years of premiums (18 years x $2,000/year). 1. LTCi will allow you to maintain your independence without burdening family.

We have home insurance even though only one in 1,200 houses will catch fire. If you have a 1-in-10 risk of losing $250,000 or more, wouldn’t you want to protect yourself and what you’ve worked so hard for against such a catastrophe? Keep in mind long term care insurance policies and companies are different. A thorough analysis of your objectives and needs is necessary to recommend a particular solution.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Wins at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Congratulations to Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club member Carlee See, pictured holding her ribbon that she earned for placing ninth in the medium class with her crossbred Barrow at the 2011 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Market Barrow Show.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Leader announces activities

I think we had a very productive meeting on March 6, 2011. But, for those of you who may have missed it, here is a rundown of the discussion topics.

Toys for Tots We are asking everyone to remember to keep the Toys for Tots donations coming all year long. I will try and remember to bring a big box for you guys to decorate at the next meeting!

Koslovsky Benefit The Albert and Patsy Koslovsky Benefit will be held on Saturday, April 2 at Seaton Star Hall. Lodge 48, Beyersville as well as our mother lodge and many others will be helping us with this benefit. This is going to be a big event, and we will need lots of help. All of Lodge 47 youth will be helping with the silent auction and selling 50/50 tickets. Please remember to continue to sell the other tickets as well. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and there will be a barbecue meal served for freewill donations. Call me if you need flyers, and I will hand deliver some to you as soon as possible. Wild Horses will play from 7 to 11 p.m. So what I need you all to do is please pass the flyers out, donate something for the silent auction, bake something sweet (this is a good time to try out those YAD recipes!), and if you would like to donate a brisket, that would be awesome. Patsy and her family have done so much for the youth. We are lucky to be able to show them just how much they mean to SPJST and the youth. Please remember to keep praying for their family as well.

Youth Achievement Day I attended the youth leaders workshop on March 26 and 27. So when we have our next meeting on April 3, I will have YAD cards, camp forms, LIT forms, and a clear understanding of all the new YAD rules. Please try your best to attend this meeting. I will need a definite answer about your attendance at YAD this year. If you plan on attending, then I would like to know what your talent will be this year. If you do not know what type of talent you would like to participate in, then I have lots of ideas to help you come up with a solution. It is my goal for every

VӖSTNÍK

Lodge 47 member who is able to attend YAD this year to do either an individual or group talent—preferably both! Also, not making it to the April meeting will not get you off the hook! If you are not there, then you should be expecting a phone call.

Easter Egg Hunt—April 3 Also, our next meeting will be the dinner for 50-year members as well as the annual Easter egg hunt. We all agreed to bring a bag of candy per family, and while the adults attend the mother lodge meeting, all the youth will be filling Easter eggs to hide. So please don’t forget your egg fillers, and parents, please bring a side dish for the meal and plan on staying. Summertime Fun We agreed to pay for two nights in Corpus Christi for the SPJST End of Summer Getaway. This will be for families who meet the youth club requirements. We will have started a new youth year by this time. So I suggest we use the seven meeting requirement for this trip as well. Some people who have worked very hard to raise this money will not be able to attend the Corpus trip; therefore, I am looking into some other options for a social closer to home in addition. I will have these details for you at the next meeting for a vote.

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth wins award

Congratulations to Michael Hoelscher of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club! He is pictured with his trophy that he earned at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 5, 2011. Michael won Best of Show from Round Top - Carmine Elementary. His artwork is titled, “Mining in the Dark.”

Dear Readers, At our February meeting, we first went to Temple to the District Two Skating Party. I had lots of fun and took my friend Katy as a visitor. Then, after the skating party, we met at Pizza Hut in Taylor and held our meeting. Youth Leader Donna reported that February 26 was the Youth Development Workshop at Cooper Farm. Lodge 84, Dallas youth plan spring activities

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 12:15 p.m. The meeting was brought to order by me, Vice President Scott Cowan. The Pledge of Allegiance and youth club motto were recited before getting down to the discussion of old and new business. New business included the upcoming district lock-in the weekend of April 2 at Lodge 183, Arlington. If you haven’t heard, the theme is “Bring A Friend” to hopefully encourage new members to join SPJST. Then, we discussed plans for our April 17 meeting and Easter celebration. Also, we talked about our responsibilities for making the District Three Spring Meeting on May 1 a success. It was a busy hour and a half. We adjourned the meeting around 1:45 p.m. to go work on our community project which was to repaint the parking lot signs so they would be readable.

Next Meeting—April 17 Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, April 17 at 12 noon. I hope you can join us; we have fun planned. Fraternally, Scott Cowan Vice President —SPJST—

Congratulations to Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point youth Ryan Mathis! He was recognized on March 22, 2011, in a knighting ceremony at Lakewood Elementary School where he was chosen by his teacher Mrs. Whitley for having the characteristic virtue of compassion. The award says, “Ryan is a very compassionate person. He is always thoughtful of others and really tries to visualize himself in others’ shoes . . . Ryan Mathis showed great generosity during lunch one day this year. On a day when the class received special seating privileges at lunch, Ryan moved to sit by another student who was sitting alone to accompany that student for lunch. This showed me that Ryan is very kind-hearted and is a great friend to all the students at school, which is why he deserved to be knighted for the virtue of compassion today.” Ryan is the son of Brandt and Trish Konkler.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on March meeting

Dear Readers, On Sunday, March 20, 2011, the youth of Lodge 84 met to conduct their monthly meeting. Vice President Scott Cowan brought the meeting to order at approximately 12:15 p.m. We had five youth and five youth leaders present. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto. Upcoming dates to mark your calendars include April 2 – District Three lock-in at Lodge 183, Arlington. Everyone is encouraged to bring a friend so they might consider joining SPJST to have fun and learn about fraternalism. Check your Vestnik for more details. April 17 is Lodge 84’s youth monthly meeting and Easter celebration. The fun begins at 12 noon. And, May 1 is the District Three Spring Meeting to be held at Lodge 84. The committee reports were given, and we adjourned before going outside to repaint the parking lot signs which had become unreadable. It was a productive meeting, and we have a lot of upcoming events on our schedule. Lodge 92 Fort Worth youth invited to April 10 Easter egg hunt

Dear SPJST Readers, On March 20, 2011, Lodge 92, Fort Worth had a dance with the band Don Peachy as entertainment. The youth club was in charge of the kitchen, and we had so much fun. Dances are always a great time for the whole youth club and our families to have fun and become even closer than we already are. During the dances, we also try to spread the word about SPJST and how fun it is as much as we can. On April 10, Lodge 92 will host its annual Easter egg hunt. We are very excited! At this event, there will be an Easter egg hunt for the kids and a beer can hunt for the adults. Everyone is invited! Much love, Alexa Hubenak 2008-2009 State Queen —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: itʼs a great day!

My family and I were excited to attend the Youth Development Workshop, but we had a busy schedule. I had the opportunity to learn through SPJST about public speaking, how to properly run a meeting, and community service project ideas. After taking many notes and learning valuable skills for the future, we had a delicious meal, and then continued. My favorite part was definitely the skit put on by the adult lodge members, describing the importance of the order, leadership, teamwork, and content of an SPJST meeting. Sadly, we had to leave early for my last volleyball game of the season. As we rushed to get outside and into our car, we said our goodbyes to our dear friends from Lodge 202 Jourdanton. We raced back to San Antonio but by the time we got there, the first game of the match had already started. Coach put me in the next game, and the points just kept adding up. It was my turn to serve. I served my first serve underhand to get a feel for the ball. The ball went over the net perfectly, but the other team didn’t get a hand on it fast enough. My coach gave me a sim-

ple look, but I knew exactly what he was thinking. I responded with a nod and bounced the ball a few times. In what seemed like slow motion, I took the ball in my left hand and threw the ball in the air. I hit the ball with my right hand with what seemed like a million bolts of lightning. It flew all the way across the court, over the net, and straight to the ground on the other team’s side. My coach cheered with all of my family and teammates. After receiving high fives from the team, I served again.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: photography success

I am very interested in a photography career and have enjoyed some success in a few contests lately. A high school teacher encouraged me to enter the district Savrola photography contest, and I recently learned that my irri-

gation system photo placed fourth among more than 100 entries. My black and white photo will be featured in a magazine to be published in May. This month, I entered the UIL sponsored art competition - V.A.S.E. (Visual Art Scholastic Event) competing against all Region 20 schools. The scoring is based on the artwork itself and an interview with a judge, answering questions about technique, style, and inspiration for the artwork. The judges award a score of one to four,

with four being the top award. I entered two photos, receiving a score of three on one photo and a four on the other. I received a medal for receiving the top score. 2011 Important Youth Program Dates The rest of the game we played insanely good, and we won by a mile. The final game, we played better than ever before. We had won our final match of the season, and now we felt like true champions. The power of teamwork that SPJST has taught me is an important skill for volleyball; public speaking makes me more confident; and the community service project ideas remind me how I can help others. I’m sure the skills that I learned this one special day will influence me and help me for the rest of my life. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Sun Safety Tips For Kids And Teens

(StatePoint) There’s no such thing as a healthy tan, say experts, especially among kids and teens. “Children need to be protected from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, even on cloudy days,” says Dr. O. Marion Burton, president of American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). “Parents should make sure kids and teens are using a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher when outdoors.” The AAP also strongly cautions teenagers against using tanning salons. While it may be a growing fad among teens today, artificial tanning is not risk-free and can cause skin cancer and eye damage just like sun tanning. The Four Corners of the Czech Republic Part 1: The Bohemian Forest

Borderlands are fascinating areas where cultures either meet and intermingle, or in some cases are cordoned off to coldly stare at one another. The Czech/German/Austrian tri-border has experienced both. Over the last century, it went from being an imaginary line through the woods to a literal Iron Curtain and back again. What’s emerging here today is a cross-cultural region deep in the Bohemian Forest National Park.

Order Your SPJST 2011 Camp Tee-Shirt Today!

While the Austrians and Germans refer to the park by its location, as the Bohemian or Bavarian Forest respectively, the Czechs call it “Šumava” after an old Slavonic word for dense forest that today evokes the rustling of leaves. The three countries share the woods from a point on Trojmezná hora, or “three-border mountain”, and their good cooperation in managing the area is what has kept the Bohemian Forest a national treasure on all sides of the tri-border. Michal Valenta handles international relations for the Šumava National Park.

The area on the southern part then where the national park borders Austria is an isolated area of mountain spruce and this area is especially important for preserving the glacial lake at Plešná. The Šumava is the largest national park in the Czech Republic and most importantly, the only one where the protection of nature is possible on such a great, large area today. We have a large extent of areas which are not inhabited today due to developments after the Second World War, so there are large areas where it is possible to let nature be free, without intervention.”

Those developments after the Second World War were of course the expulsion of the ethnic German population and the building of the infamous border zone by the communist regime, a buffer of barbed-wire, lookout towers, surveillance roads and electric fences that marked the boundary the West and the so-called East for some 40 years, and made the Central European communist countries into a de facto prison. What villages remained in the no-go zone were dismantled so as to leave no cover to “escapees” and for four to ten kilometres into the Czech side of the border, the country was left to nature. “It’s a bit of a paradox because the main reason that the national park could be established was the existence of this protective belt along the border because a lot of areas could be preserved here in a state that was very close to nature. So the main populations of the most typical animals lived in these areas along the border.”

To say the Šumava is the end of civilization would be to overlook one deep mark of 18th century technological prowess etched into the ground here. The Schwarzenberg timber canal is a 60-km log flume constructed over the course of 33 years. One of the first of its kind, the canal crosses the Vltava hinterland to the Austrian waterways, breaking the continental divide and ultimately allowing a continuous stream of water from the Black Sea to the North Sea. In the tiny settlement of Jelení on the Schwarzenberg canal lives one Čestmír Hrbek, a general in the Czechoslovak army who bought an old gamekeeper’s lodge here 20 years ago and turned part of it into a small museum in honour of the great technical achievement. “The end of the 18th century was the age of industrialization, when factories were being built, people were moving from the villages to the cities for work and the cities grew tremendously, and they needed wood of all kinds. Wood for building, wood for burning, wood for furniture – in short, there was huge demand. And meanwhile, the resources in the south were running out, there were no more forests. Vienna was in the middle of a fuel crisis; another year or two and they would have all frozen to death, the Viennese. And just 100 kilometres from Vienna was the immense Bohemian wilderness, where wood was falling all over the ground and rotting in the mud. But no one knew how to get it down.”

Page 26

Schwarzenbergs certainly had the wherewithal to solve just about any problem the era could pose, but even money can’t move mountains of trees without the smarts of someone like Josef Rosenauer, the Czech engineer who put the plan into action. “Rosenauer placed his bets on water. He decided that he would get the wood from here to the towns below by water, by rivers, via the Danube and the Vltava. And he would get it to the rivers by water as well. And since there was no natural waterway to the rivers, not even a creek, he knew they would have to build one.”

Today, people from all sides of the border come to wonder at their shared history in the mossy stone beds and beautiful neo-Renaissance tunnels of the canal. Over a lunch of fresh mountain trout in the frontier town of Nová Pec I had the good fortune of meeting Austrian artist Joachim Eckl and his wife Joanna, for whom visiting the Czech side of the border is an important custom.

“We try to come every other week.” And why? “Because we feel very linked to this land and to this area because our relatives and our family, part of it comes from Bohemia, which used to be one big culture here. And after the Iron Curtain the family was separated. We feel our roots here, and we think that the main duty for us now is to re-link again, that we find common ground again. We have to learn the language also, because our parents didn’t speak any Czech, but our grandparents - their main language was Czech.”

So have you learned some Czech? “Only very little. But we hope that our children will connect better than we do.”

And do you have any special attraction to the Czech Republic? “No, I like the countryside and to come here and see how they live here. It’s good that it’s open again and that we can go over and see what’s going on here and we didn’t do this 20 years ago – or even 10 years ago. It’s about discovery, and I like it.” Are there any benefits to living close to the German border for Austrians? Do you ever go to Germany?

Šumava, photo: www.czechtourism.com

“Sure we go to Germany often, but I think the main difference is that in Germany we feel that everything is very similar to Austria. And in the Czech Republic in the 50 years of the communist government here a lot of things developed differently. And in my opinion the people here have the chance now to learn from the mistakes we have made over the last 50 years. The Czech culture . . . around 1900 it was the Switzerland of Europe, with the industrialization here, the iron in-

VӖSTNÍK

dustry and the glass industry, this was all very highly developed here in the Czech Republic. And now, we have to watch and learn from the Czechs, how they are handling the situation here now. I think it should be a positive exchange.”

Living right beneath the real Iron Curtain and experiencing the whole of the region since then inspired Mr. Eckl to undertake an interesting project on the market square in the Austrian town of Aigen - a tangible display of regional unity among the peoples who have shared this landscape across three countries and for many, many hundreds of years. “The Bohemian Woods cover an area in Germany, in Austria, and in Bohemia – or the Czech Republic. And I think that the connection and the relationship to the land will make us find common ground again, because we have a common origin here. So we did was, we brought 40 square metres of land from the Bohemian woods here to Austria, from those in Germany we also brought an ‘island’ of 40 square metres and also another 5 islands from the Bohemian woods in Austria, and we tried to let them grow together again. It’s a symbolic thing. It has all been based on the participation of the people here: in Germany, in Austria, and in the Czech Republic. And I think it is quite a nice symbol, a nice picture of how we can find common ground again.” — Christian Falvey

Renaming the World in Czech

Hi, and welcome to Sound Czech which is going to sound Czecher than ever today because we’re going to talk about the Czechification of foreign place names, i.e. exonyms. We’ll start with Austria because after hundreds of years of cohabitation Czechs have renamed just about everything in the country beginning with the word Austria itself, Rakousko in Czech, as in the song by Šlapeto, titled, “Kampak na nás bolševici,” where they sing about the rakouský stat, meaning the Austrian Empire.

“Než-li rakouský stát krutý rozpadnul se na kousky, Šmeral byl vždycky černožlutý přívrženec rakouský. Když nic nekoukalo z Rakous do bolševismu se zakous.”

Translation: “Before the Austrian state fell into bits, Šmeral had always been a blackand-yellow Austrian devotee, but when nothing came of Austria, he sunk his teeth into Bolshevism.”

Another song about the various thumbs that Czechs have found themselves under over the centuries. Czechs have an intimate relationship with Austria, of course, not just

because they are neighbors, but because the Austrian monarchy ruled the “Czech lands” for nearly 400 years so the whole map of the country has been Czechified. Near the Czech-Austrian border is a town called Raabs an der Thaya, and historically, it and its 11th century castle was called Ratgoz, which was Czechified as Rakousy. The country lying beyond the castle came to be referred to as Rakousy as well, giving rise to the modern Rakousko.

The Austrian Empire There are several ways that Austrian towns are renamed in Czech. In many cases, they are simply made to sound Czech, like the Alpine town of Bludenz - Bludenec, in Czech, or Krems an der Donau which is Kremže in Czech and gave its name to spicy, kremžská mustard. They may have their meaning translated – the small, nearby town of Horn for example is “Rohy,” and Salzburg used to be called Solnohrad, meaning literally Salt Castle, just as it does in German. Then, there are Austrian names taken from Old Slavonic that have retained their original names in Czech. The town or river of Zwettl, for instance, was named Světlá, meaning a clearing, by previous Slavic inhabitants, and it is still called that in Czech. Austria’s second city Graz was probably founded by Slavs – a grad or hrad is a fortress in Slavic languages, and today, it is called Štýrský Hradec in Czech - Styrian Fortress. It isn’t just Austria that Czechs have renamed, of course. Germany is famously known as Německo because the people there can’t speak, they are němí, or mute. The German town of Aachen is called Cáchy, apparently a confused recitation of the phrase “zu Aachen.” Lots of other European cities have simply garbled names in Czech, like Kodaň (Copenhagen), Drážďany (Dresden), or Benátky (Venice).

Some other places elsewhere are translated literally as well, like Munich (Mnichov, or a place of monks), and some are translated badly (like the German town of Constance, which was named after a Roman emperor but

is called Kostnice, or “ossurary” in Czech. The rules for all this are, of course, non-existent, and it’s recommended that you don’t try translating place names on your own. New Zealand in

Summer 2011 Czech Republic Trip Planner Submission Deadline - April 25 This issue will contain tips, photos, what to do, what is not suggested, for making treasured memories while visiting the land of your ancestors. Unfortunately, upon returning, there are always ‘things you wish you had done.” Tell us about “what you wish you had or had not done,” and as always, please feel free to share your photos. Additional photos from Bridging Czech Generations will be included as well as genealogical information on the Dusek family. Fall 2011 Early Texas Czech Settlements Submission Deadline - August 1 A growing number of places which were once considered thriving “Czech Settlements” are no longer. We want to make sure the history of those areas where our ancestors settled upon arriving in the United States are recorded for future generations. Realizing our membership holds key information not found elsewhere, we ask for your help with this issue.

Winter 2011 Family Heirlooms Submission Deadline - October 1 Trinkets and treasures (family heirlooms) left behind by our ancestors are more than dust collectors. CHMGC to host Czech Voices April 6

“The Czech emigrants were very poor peasants who wanted more from life than they expected to find in their native country. On August 19, 1851, 118 emigrant passes to Texas were granted by the government. All but two, Jan Silar, a weaver, and Josef Silar, a soap maker, were laborers, the poorest of the villagers. On November 6, 1851, 74 of those of those that were issued passes started the long trip to their new homes. The remaining 44 people could not bear to leave their homeland. Like most emigrants, these people surely had mixed emotions concerning the future. Their past had not been easy. They lived on very small farms and barely made enough to survive. At the time, the potatoes, the staple crop of the area, were rotting in the ground and those left behind faced possible starvation. On the other hand, the future, though full of promise, seemed vague and uncertain, and the emigrants were leaving everything they had ever known. Most of them were never again to see their hometowns, friends, and relatives that were left behind. Many did not find a better life. The story of this first group is full of misfortune and tragedy; only about half of them reached Texas alive. For Josef Silar, Sr., Texas was not to be the promised land. In 1852, he moved to Industry and bought a farm. In 1854, his wife died, and shortly thereafter his house burned down. His spirit broken, he died in 1855, leaving three orphaned children. Josef Silar, Jr., however, was to survive and prosper.” (Krasna Amerika by Clinton Machann and James W. Mendl)

Josef Silar, Jr. was one of thousands of Czech people who braved harsh conditions to reach Texas and a better life for his family. Although he never achieved his personal dreams, he was able to establish a new life and a better future for his children and grandchildren. On Wednesday, April 6, 2011, the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will host a celebration of the richness of the Czech culture that these brave emigrants brought to Texas. Music for the social hour will be provided by Dr. Michael Middleton, 1981 and 1982 Texas State Accordion Champion and the 1981 Shiner, Texas - Polka Champion. A traditional Czech dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with the program to follow. The celebration will be at the Santa Fe Depot, located at 315 West Avenue B from 6 to 9 p.m. The featured speaker will be Dr. Clinton Machann, and the Honorary Consul General of the Czech Republic for the State of Texas Ray Snokhous will welcome guests. The emcee will be SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. Clinton John Machann, co-author with James W. Mendl, of Czech Voices and Krasna Amerika, is an associate professor in the department of English at Texas A&M University. He is a fourth-generation Texas Czech who grew up on a small farm in Burleson County. He received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976. He lives in College Station with his wife Ginny, and they have two daughters, Alena and Theresie. In addition to his publications related to American ethnic studies, Clint has published widely in the field of 19th century British literature. Plzen Galleries debut at CCMH

On Saturday, March 12, 2011, from 6 to 7 p.m., a piano maestro and a roving accordionist/singer introduced the new venue on the third floor to a crowd ready to meet, greet, eat, drink, and be merry with a hors d’oeuvres and wine/beer reception. They mingled throughout the beautiful, colorful 1,289 pieces of Czech art glass/ceramics from donors Eric and Barbara Ottervik. The Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) announces release of its latest publication, Lee County Czechs, researched and written by John R. Gantt, Jr., a native of Lee County. Within the book’s 232 pages are chapters on the physical setting of the county, providing insight into why the Czechs settled where they did, and a brief history of the county, tracing the various ethnic groups which settled there, from the Tonkawa Indians to the Czech/Moravian settlers who began to arrive in the early 1800s. The heart of the book is made up of extractions from the United States Census records of Lee County, those of 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. Individual family chapters regarding each of those years include general family information as well as vital information on individual members of Czech families. Also included are extractions from the Lee County tax rolls of 1900 and 1910 regarding Czech surnames; which give information concerning family real estate and other property. A double-reference index aids in locating various individual names. Available for $32, plus $5 shipping, Lee County Czechs is enriched with a Czech scrapbook containing over 240 photographs, numerous maps, and other items of interest to the serious genealogist, historian, or person just interested in his/her particular family history. 2011 SPJST Member S e r v ic i ce s Directory It’s all about members helping members! Submit your business card today!

If you are an SPJST member and you have a business — large or small — get it listed in the 2011 SPJST Member Services Directory. The directory provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales agents and free listings to members who can provide goods and services to other SPJST members. The idea is based on the fraternal concept of members helping members. In addition to these free listings, members will have the opportunity to place a free display advertisement/coupon in the directory. Free display advertisements/coupons will be provided to businesses that offer SPJST members discount products and/or services. And, something new this year— if you, the owner, employ SPJST members, take a photo, send us the names, and we will publish it in the directory. Photo must feature SPJST members and some aspect of the business. To be listed in the 2011 directory, you must be an SPJST member. Send your business card, SPJST lodge number, SPJST member discount information (optional), and photo of SPJST members in the business (optional) to: SPJST Member Services Directory c/o Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100 You may also email your information to the Editor: melaniez@vvm.com All materials must be submitted no later than Monday, April 4, 2011.
