Celebrating People in Action
humorist Erma Bombeck once said, “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for another.” Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week has grown exponentially in scope each year since, drawing the support and endorsement of all subsequent United States presidents, governors, mayors, and other respected elected officials. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing, and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, in unison, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. National Volunteer Week is about taking action, encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change—discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to foster positive transformation. National Volunteer Week is not only our moment in time to celebrate our volunteers, but to enable a nation to share ideas, practices, and stories, wherever they happen thereby shaping a movement to re-imagine the notion of citizenship for the 21st century. National Volunteer Week is April 10 to 16. Thank you, SPJST volunteers, for your time and service to SPJST and communities across the state. You are making a difference in everything you do.
Iʼll Show You A Volunteer Show me a person who spends endless hours in training without pay, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. Show me a person where a cry for help brings split-second dispatch, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is devastated when lives are lost or maimed, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. Show me a person who is graciously welcomed as a next-door neighbor, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who takes ridicule more than compliments, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person whose car is garaged with the grille facing out, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who sacrifices home life, TV . . . even tender moments, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person visibly moved at the strains of our National Anthem, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who may be asked to give more than just dedication, And, I’ll show you a volunteer.
Show me a person who is asked to give more . . . and more . . . and more, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. —Poem by Foley —SPJST—

District Two Sales Agents Invited to Meetings
Dear District Two Sales Agents, I hope this note finds all of you enjoying good health and good sales. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of two meetings that I have planned for this month. We have started the year off to a good start, and we want to continue the progress. It is very important that you attend one of the two meetings that are being planned. We will discuss many things that effect our production, issue, and future incentive programs as well as service to our existing members. The first meeting will be held in Elgin at the 3H Cattle Company, located at 608 West Alamo Street in Elgin on Thursday, April 14. The time
will be 6:30 p.m. and should last until about 8:30 p.m. The second meeting will be Monday, April 18 at the SPJST Home Office training room. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude around 8:30 p.m. Remember, “nothing happens until someone sells something,” and don’t forget to bring those applications (completed, signed, with the money, ready to be turned in) with you! Good luck, and good sales. Hiram Dixon, FICF, LUTCF, CFFM State Field Representative —SPJST—

Thanks to Lodge 48, Beyersville for hosting the tournament. The members did an outstanding job preparing for the tournament. Thanks to the kitchen crew — Robert Leshikar, assisted by Alice Wuensche, Ruth
Wuensche, and Bobby Wuensche — for keeping the coffee pot on and for the delicious sweets in the morning and the wonderful pot roast lunch accompanied by the delicious sides and desserts. Prior to serving lunch, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche announced that State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke was celebrating a birthday on that date, and everyone joined in singing “Happy Birthday.” A birthday cake was presented, and it was enjoyed by all in attendance in addition to the other desserts. We would like to thank all the players who participated in the tournament. It all ended in a fraternal way. Thanks to President Robert Leshikar and all the members of Lodge 48 who worked behind the scenes to make the tournament a success. Fraternally, Chester Jenke, FICF State FAC —SPJST—

Walk Like MADD event to honor Amber Rice
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is currently hard at work on its first Walk Like MADD event to be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the campus of University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. The 5K walk is Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s signature event, and the funds raised through Walk Like MADD will go to MADD – Texas State in providing community education, victim support services, and youth programs. Drunk driving is the most frequently committed violent crime in both our state and across our nation. In 2009, there were 27,237 alcohol related crashes in Texas, and 13,874 of those resulted in injuries or death. And while we have seen a decrease of 4 percent since 2008, we still face a challenging, yet highly preventable, epidemic. Last year, Central Texas residents were challenged to make a change, and they did so by raising over $50,000 to support MADD’s mission to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking. This
year, MADD hopes to raise $70,000, and we need your help! Please consider supporting MADD’s life-saving efforts by walking in the event; organizing a team of walkers with your lodge, youth club, or business/organization; and/or serving as a Walk Like MADD sponsor. MADD has a proven track record of saving lives, and every dollar raised furthers awareness for MADD’s free programs and services. Walker registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 21. Walk Like MADD For more information, please contact Walk Like MADD Event Coordinator for the Bell County Walk Mysty Rice (254) 913-8495 or by email mysty1280@hotmail.com with any questions or comments. You can also learn more about Walk Like MADD at www.walklikemadd.org. Editor’s Note: Thanks to Mysty for coordinating this year’s Walk Like MADD. Mysty’s sister 22-yearold Amber Nicole Rice was killed June 16, 2007, by a drunk driver. Amber was an active youth club member at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. Mysty has also created Team Amber to honor her sister’s life, and she is seeking walkers to join Team Amber. Contact Mysty for more information. —SPJST—

SPJST Lodges 32, Victoria; 97, Placedo join hands for Food Bank of the Golden Crescent
On Saturday, April 2, 2011, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent was invaded by 16 youth and adult members from Lodge 32, Victoria and eight adult members from Lodge 97, Placedo. Mary Trevino from the Food Bank gave us instructions on how to spend the three hours of volunteering our time and services. Ms. Trevino is a very patient lady with a heart of gold – she loves her job, and it truly shows. We put together breakfasts and lunches for the weekend Back Pack Program. The breakfasts consist of two
boxes of milk, two boxes of cereal, and two fruit cups. The lunches consist of two juice boxes, two protein items, and two snacks. These items are delivered to area schools and handed out to children participating in the program. The parents of these children work on weekends, and this assures that children have two meals a day over the weekend. The next project was bagging rice and beans! We bagged 1,400 pounds of rice weighing out two pounds per bag. Labels were applied and the bags were put into boxes of 50 pounds of rice.
Another project was sorting cans and boxes of food items. This makes it so much easier for the Food Bank to keep track of its inventory. All of this was accomplished in three hours. We were busy bees for sure! We all walked away with a good feeling knowing we made a difference by taking on this project. So Join Hands Day this year was not just the adults and the youth . . . but also joining two lodges. What a difference the extra manpower made – we truly accomplished more than we could have imagined. Participating from Lodge 32, Victo-
ria were Mike and Kathy Ahlstrom; Jonathon, Orion, and Mikael Gonzalez; Bella Ikonomos; Mercedes Leos; Mary and Melissa Monclova; Kathy and Mary Tijerina; Nikolas, Norma, and Natalie Rendon; Marina Rivas; and Stephanie Sanchez. Participating from Lodge 97, Placedo were Shelton and Sylvia Bluhm; Yvonne Garrett; Diana Redd; Gay Revel; Donna Vanek; and Kathleen and Jim Yoss. Thanks to all of you for a very successful day – teamwork is awesome! —SPJST—

Abbott, Texas CASA launch campaign
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and Texas CASA, Inc. representatives recently observed Child Abuse Prevention Month and commended the thousands of volunteers who serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Texas foster children. Attorney General Abbott and Texas CASA volunteer Carol Cates stressed the vital role that CASAs provide to abused and neglected children. Texas CASA, Inc. trains volunteers across the state to objectively advocate for a foster child’s best interests in state courts. These dedicated volunteers are also taught to help children through the foster care system and help these young victims rebuild their lives. Former First Lady Laura Bush recently recorded a public service announcement in an effort to help raise awareness about the CASA program and the important role its volunteers play in the larger effort to protect Texas foster children. Citing Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) research on the CASA program’s effectiveness, Attorney General Abbott joined the former first lady’s campaign and urged more Texans to help abused foster children by serving as CASA volunteers. “Every day, CASA volunteers, gov-

ernment leaders and members of the judiciary work together to protect abused and neglected children,” Attorney General Abbott said. “The state’s foster care system – and the children it serves – relies on trained CASA volunteers to help protect child abuse victims. We encourage more Texans to step forward, become a CASA volunteer and join the dedicated network of selfless advocates who provide a safety net for Texas foster children.” Attorney General Abbott added: “Serving as a CASA volunteer provides advocates a unique opportunity to make a tremendous difference in a child’s life – and in the State’s future. Encouraged and supported by CASA volunteers, our State’s youngest victims are able to gather the courage to rebuild their lives, restore their trust, and start down the path to a bright and promising future.” According to DFPS, 8,300 additional children will enter the Texas child welfare system by 2014. In 2010, DFPS reported that 42,890 children were in foster care. The agency’s projections indicate that more than 51,000 children will be under its care by 2014. In light of the nearly 20 percent increase expected over the next three years, far more Texas foster children will need CASA volunteers to be their voice in court. CASA volunteers do more for young victims than offer much-needed

comfort and support. They attend all legal proceedings that affect each child victim and work alongside TDFPS, judges, attorneys, foster families, and mental health professionals who are working to improve fragile young lives. Texas judges who have CASA programs in their courts recognize the value of well-trained CASA volunteers’ observations and recommendations. According to a 2008 judicial study by the Office of Survey Research at the University of Texas at Austin, 97 percent of Texas judges reported that case related information from CASA advocates is beneficial to their decision making. In the same survey, 94 percent of Texas judges said CASA volunteers positively impacted the lives of young victims. A 2006 study conducted by National CASA Association and U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs found that children who are paired with a CASA volunteer are less

likely to re-enter the child welfare system after their case is closed. Attorney General Abbott and Texas CASA, Inc. have partnered several times to raise awareness about child abuse prevention. In 2007, Texas CASA recognized Attorney General Abbott’s commitment to protecting Texas children with its Lone Star Champions for Kids Award. Throughout the Abbott administration, the Texas Attorney General’s Office has focused on protecting children by working proactively to reduce child victims’ physical and emotional trauma. In 2010, Texas CASA, Inc. was awarded a grant from the Compensation to Victims of Crime Fund that provided financial support for 69 local CASA programs. In addition to awarding crime victim assistance grants to Texas CASA and other organizations that serve victims, the Attorney General’s Crime Victim Services Division awarded more than $75 million directly to

Life Insurance as a Gift (Updated) By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Last month, I had several calls regarding the financial article on “Life Insurance as a Gift.” Most of the concern was on life insurance gifts serving to remove the death benefit from the insured’s gross estate, as the life insurance death benefit is included in the gross estate. Generally, life insurance is subject to estate taxation if the insured owns or controls the policy, or if the policy is payable to the estate of the insured. If the policy is community property, only one-half is includable in the deceased spouse’s estate. If the non-insured spouse is the beneficiary of a policy, there is no immediate estate taxation, since proceeds are eligible for a marital deduction. The proceeds received by the spouse, however, are added to his or her estate, so the tax burden is merely deferred until death of the spouse. The purpose of an irrevocable life insurance trust (aka “ILIT”) is to remove the insurance proceeds from the estates of both spouses. A detailed discussion of this complex subject is beyond the scope of this outline. Also remember that a fundamental problem in attempting to remove insurance from the insured’s estate is the avoidance of the “three-year rule” set forth in section 2035 of the Internal Revenue Code. Any transfer of a life insurance policy by the insured results in inclusion of the proceeds in the insured’s estate, if the transfer was made within three years of the insured’s death. Fur-
thermore, the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 was signed into law on December 17, 2010. The Act generally only extends its tax breaks for two years – 2011 and 2012. For 2011, no gift, estate or generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax is imposed on the first $5 million for an individual or $10 million for a couple for both estate and gift-tax levies, with a top tax rate of 35 percent for estates above these levels. Each individual is entitled to this exemption amount. 2011 wealth transfers in excess of this exemption amount may be subject to a gift, estate or GST tax. This brief financial update is no substitute for a careful consideration of all of the advantages and disadvantages of this matter in light of your unique personal circumstances. Tax law and estate planning are critical decisions that need to be considered when utilizing life insurance as a gift. Before implementing any significant tax or financial planning strategy, consult your financial planner, attorney or tax advisor as appropriate.

Th e Grea t Ame ri can Trai n Trip with th e B ol lo ms of S PJST Lo dge 88, H ous to n Now this is something different . . . We have traveled by car, plane, and ship, so we decided it would be exciting to travel by train. Jim and Malvina Slovak had the answer.
Monday September 27, 2010 We left home at 12 noon and headed for San Antonio to spend the night so that we could board the train Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. The night at the La Quinta hotel was very nice, and we were invited to leave our vehicles at the motel until our return from our adventure.
Tuesday, September 28, 2010 We boarded the train and pulled out at 7 a.m. We rolled along through the beautiful countryside, with nothing exciting happening all the way to Chicago. We were traveling with the Abcats Travel Agency out of Victoria, and there were 26 of us. We were traveling first class – so we were assigned roomettes, and the cost of the meals served us in the dining car was included in our fare. Sleeping in the roomette was onerous, with Bill having to climb into the upper bunk and strap himself in. We felt like a couple of sandwiches.
Wednesday, September 29, 2010 We were awakened for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. There was a paper under our door – USA Today. We dressed and proceeded to the dining car. The breakfast was a real treat with a choice of several lovely items. Bill and I had coffee, juice, and a $9 omelette with $3 bacon to go with it. The waiters were cheerful and so nice to us. After breakfast, we sat down to a game of “42” with the Stolarskis and had a great time. We played five games, with the guys having more luck than the girls. They won three games; and we won two. Lunch was served in the dining car with almost everyone ordering their special Black Angus hamburgers with all the trimmings. Great! We were all tempted with luscious desserts –and we didn’t turn them down! I had bread pudding with ice cream. We whisked along through the countryside and arrived in Chicago at l:52 p.m. Next on the agenda was a Gray Line tour of Chicago. We had a very knowledgeable driver/tourguide, which made for a most interesting tour. He stopped at the lake to give us a chance to take pictures and just
browse around. We left Chicago at 9 p.m. and headed for Buffalo, New York. When we had settled into our roomette, our attendant came to our car and welcomed us and informed us that she would be taking care of us on this leg of our trip She also invited us to a wine and cheese party to be held in the dining car as soon as the train was rolling. This was very nice, and we enjoyed the wine and cheese and the camaraderie. Now to bed . . . The roomettes on this leg of the trip had a commode and lavatory inside. The lavatory was in the wall of the roomette and pulled down for use. You used it and when finished, you pushed it back into the wall and the water drained into the wall – pretty neat! The commode was immediately next to the foot of the bottom bunk, and Bill had to step on the lid to climb up into his bunk.

Thursday, September 30, 2010 Wake up call was at 6 a.m. And, we were off to the dining car for breakfast. We had coffee, cranberry juice, and a spinach quiche – great! We arrived in Buffalo, and our bus for Niagara Falls was waiting. We boarded and headed for the Falls with a very informative driver at the wheel. The drive only took about 30 minutes and was an enjoyable one. He took us around town a bit before dropping us off at the Embassy Suites. This is a lovely hotel with a good view of the Falls (except that it was so foggy, and all you could see was a cloud of steam). We had a lovely suite on the 17th floor. At 3:30 p.m., we went down to the ninth floor for drinks, snacks, and camaraderie. We had gift cards for two alcoholic drinks. We spent an enjoyable hour or more there. Then, we went for a walk above the street and watched the Falls. The fog had lifted, and the sun shown on the Falls and made a beautiful rainbow. We got back to our room, showered, and got ready for an early wake-up call (4 a.m.).
Friday, October 1, 2010 It was too early for breakfast – we made some coffee in the room and headed out. We had to wait for a while in the depot before we were able to board the train. We were not traveling first class on this leg of our trip – so breakfast was on us. We arrived in Montreal at 2 p.m. and rode the Mar-
Saturday, October 2, 2010 We went down for breakfast at the hotel. Then, we were off for a day’s adventure. We rode the subway to downtown to do a horse and buggy tour of downtown. Then, it was the big tour by bus. We toured the downtown area, and the bus took us to a point directly in front of the beautiful Notre Dame Basilica, but there was a wedding in progress at the Basilica and tourists were not allowed in so we missed out on seeing the gorgeous interior. I had visited the Basilica when my son and daughter-in-law lived in Montreal, and my daughter-in-law informed us that the architect who designed this beautiful structure was a Jew, but by the time the Basilica was completed, he had joined the church. We all went to Mass at Cathedral Marie Reine du Monde. It was all in French, and since most of us were either Czech or German, we just prayed!
So with the help of Bill and a lot of my friends, I was able to take in everything. One of the very interesting stops on our walk was The Wall. A huge wall on which 12 artists had collaborated to do the four seasons in 3D (Trompe L’oeil). The original painting was done at least 200 years ago and is still beautiful—thanks to a fiberglass coating which was applied to protect it from the elements and graffiti.

Sunday, October 3, 2010 Today, we go to Quebec City. We boarded a bus and headed out. The weather was perfect, and we were in for a real treat. It is a most unusual city! Even in Europe, we didn’t see such unusual design and structure. Our tour guide met us at the bus – a handsome young Frenchman named Roch, who spoke clearly and in a very interesting way. He informed us that there would a lot of walking up and down steep hills on cobblestone streets. He asked me if I can make it or would I prefer to wait on the bus until the return of the tour. I told him I came all this way to see everything.
Another very interesting sight was the chateau high atop the highest point in the area. Its green copper roof set the chateau off in all its majesty. Chateau Frontenac Hotel was built for the Canadian Pacific Railway to bring clients from British Columbia to Halifax. The hotel is operated by Fairmont and is owned by the Quebec government . . . so much to see – as our tour guide informed us: It would take three days to see what we were trying to crowd into such a short space of time. At the end of our tour, we stopped at a restaurant on the edge of the St. Lawrence Seaway. We had to rush through our lunch, as we were scheduled to take a little cruise up the seaway. After the cruise, we boarded the bus and drove “up the hill,” as our tour guide put it. This was a beautiful area with a great view and perfectly manicured grounds. We wanted to do so many more wonderful stops, but time was running out on us, and we just went back to the foot of the chateau and rode the lift to the top.

The cost of the lift ride was $2 for the ride up and $2 for the ride down. The reason for this arrangement: One could also walk down the breakneck stair case, if you were in good enough physical condition – and you saved $2. Our guide explained that it is not as dangerous as it sounds – but just looking up at it scares a person and you pull out the $2 for the ride down on the lift. After the lift ride, we bought a few picture postcards, walked down the hill, and drank a glass of wine with the Dujkas, boarded the bus, and headed back to our hotel in Montreal at Durval. That was a three-hour drive. A long day! It was something we were so happy we were able to do.

Monday, October 4, 2010 Today, we leave Montreal. We got up at 6 a.m., dressed, and went to breakfast. The Marriott served a nourishing breakfast. Coffee, cereal, boiled eggs, toast, muffins, and fruit – no soggy doughnuts. The ladies working here were very nice and helped where they could. We got our luggage down to the lobby, and the hotel shuttle took us to the train station. We took off with no problems until we arrived in Toronto. We had to transfer to a different train so – “another luggage drag”— as the guys referred to it. The luggage came off the train, and we were required to pay $2 for the unloading of each bag checked. We paid for this transfer and went into the train station for a two-hour wait for the train to Buffalo. As the 26 of us sat there and snacked and passed the time, we were informed that five pieces of our checked luggage were missing. That was scary — Bill’s medications were in one of those checked bags. We were

all worried, but just as we were to board the train, they announced that the lost had been found. We all cheered! We boarded, and the train pulled out. As we got rolling, Jim (our fearless leader) pulled out a bottle of Canadian whiskey and passed it around, and we all took a swig to celebrate the finding of the luggage. Amid cheers, applauding, whooping, and cheering, we were a happy bunch. Then, the conductor (a very nice lady) stepped in and informed us that this is a “no, no.” Jim explained the reason for our celebration and gave her a big hug and all was fine—and we were on our way to Buffalo.

States May Offer the Key to Meeting Education Costs By James L. Lee, III, CPA
There are many options available to families saving for college education expenses. One of the most popular in recent years has been the Qualified Tuition Program (QTP) or more commonly known as a 529 plan. As a result of legislation, individual states are able to set up their own tuition programs James L. Lee, III and, to date, almost all states have adopted some type of program. These programs may aid numerous families in their attempts to provide the opportunity of a college education for their children. Generally speaking, there are two main types of programs a state may adopt: a credit program (529 prepaid tuition program) or a 529 savings program. The credit programs enable a family to purchase tuition credits or certificates from the state that will cover certain education costs upon a child’s acceptance to a covered, in-state college or university. Depending on the state, the parent may purchase prepaid credit units at their discretion or may be required to purchase prepaid two or four-year plans. The benefits of this type of program is the establishment of a disciplined payment schedule along with the guarantee that certain future education costs will be met for the child. In contrast, the savings program allows families the flexibility to randomly contribute funds to a special account that has the benefit of tax-deferral. The growth of the earnings is not taxed while the funds are held in the savings program and this is the central benefit of the savings program: it permits tax-deferred growth on the funds set aside for future education costs. Upon a child’s acceptance into a college or university, the funds in this account may be used to meet the qualified higher education costs of the child at any eligible education institution in the U.S. and some foreign. As funds are withdrawn to meet qualified higher education expenses, the dis-
tribution is 100 percent tax-free* federally. If an individual contributed $30,000 to a savings program and $40,000 is taken out for qualified higher education expenses, no federal taxes are due on the $10,000 in earnings. Earnings are tax-free* (state taxes may apply). If the assets in the program are refunded to the parent and are not used for a child’s education, the earnings in excess of the contributions are income taxable to the recipient. Additionally, a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty on the earnings portion of the refund is included in taxable income. This penalty does not apply if the refund is made on amount equal to a scholarship received by the child or death or disability of the child. Qualified higher education expenses include tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment, and room and board according to limits set by the education institution. These state programs allow transferability of benefits from one family member to another. Keep in mind that a contribution to a qualified tuition program is subject to the gift tax, but contributions are eligible for the $13,000 annual gift tax exclusion. Also, a special election allows the gift to be treated as if it were made over a five-year period. This means that $65,000 can be contributed to an account gift-tax free, assuming that no other gifts are made during the following five-year period. Since these programs do differ, consult with your financial advisor for additional information before implementing a college-funding plan. *Withdrawals for qualified education expenses became federally tax-free effective January 1, 2002.

Congratulations also goes to all the adults who participated in the ornament contest. The adults “best looking hat” contest was great. Ruth Hanusch had a great idea. The youth may join in this one next year. It was great to have our State/District Two Royalty—King Samuel Vanicek, Queen Jacqueline Klaus, Duke Ty Stock, and Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer attending the meeting. I am so proud of the great representation they are doing for SPJST across the state of Texas. What a fantastic beseda performance enjoyed by all who attended the meeting. Thank you for your patience and attention while the dancers performed twice. We wanted to be sure each dancer was able to perform. District Two has three—and almost four—circles of dancers. I cannot even explain what the word “proud” means. There are several new little ones who are just precious. These youth worked so hard and did so good for their first performance. Now, we will just hope to get them all into costumes before YAD. Thank you to all

U.S. Food Pyramid gets smarter
(SPM Wire) Remember the food pyramid you learned about in school? It’s gotten a facelift. Revamped a few years ago, the new food pyramid from the U.S. Department of Agriculture treats each food group as equally important and has new measurement recommendations. But the most interesting aspect of the new food pyramid is the new interactive features that have just been unveiled. You now can create personalized food and exercise plans online at www.mypyramid.gov, to plan meals and track dietary goals. The site also boasts a new resource called MyFoodapedia, a database providing the calorie count of almost any natural food. You can search for any food, specify how you will prepare it, and then get a calorie count. —SPJST—

2010 - 2011 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance
Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are total merit points earned for the 2010-2011 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during June 2010 to February 2011. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.
What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates June 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011
Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior
Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the conclusion of the contest. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.
Merit Point Awards * First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division.*
Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards* First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10
What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Sabina Seidlova tells the story while Lucie Bystrnova plays a guitar and sings for the children at the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple.
Bystronova, and Ms. Seidlova quizzed the children on details of the story. The prizes were special drawings that Pavel drew during storytime. All of the winners treasured their own pieces of art. The Children’s Tour was sponsored through a grant from the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) and the University of North Texas. Tom Sovik, a professor in the music department at UNT, served as tour coordinator and guide. —SPJST—

“Old” Friends Meet Again
Recently, Doris Hunka Lee and her sister Georgia Hunka Seals visited the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located on the corner of French Avenue and Third Street in Temple, to bring an old picture of the students of Komensky School, which was located in East Bell County, and a collection of books from the Czech Republic. The books are a variety of subjects and are all written in the Czech language. Doris, who wants to maintain her ability to read, write, and converse in Czech, has translated each book to English. Doris and her sisters attended Komensky School and later were educated at Lost Prairie School, also in East Bell County. While attending Lost Prairie, they became acquainted
with Frank Klinkovsky, who is now the archivist for the museum. Frank is a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and District Two Honorary Directory. Doris, Georgia, and Frank had a great time trying to name all of the people in the pictures from the two schools, and everyone at the museum that day enjoyed listening to the stories. We are including the Komensky School picture in hope of someone helping us identify the students. Doris, who now lives in Spokane, Washington, was visiting Georgia, a longtime resident of Belton. The Bicentennial of Saint John Neumann By Dr. Bob Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood
Left to right are longtime friends Frank Klinkovsky, Georgia Seals, and Doris Lee visiting at the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. BELOW: Komensky School students.
March 28, 1811, marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Saint John Nepomucene Neumann (Jan Nepomucký Neumann in Czech), a Redemptorist missionary to the United States who became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia and the first American bishop (and thus far the only male citizen) to be canonized. Neumann was born in Prachatitz, Bohemia, Austrian Empire, which is part of modern-day Czech Republic. He attended school in České Budějovice before entering seminary there in 1831. Two years later, he transferred to the University of Prague, where he studied theology. His goal was to be ordained to the priesthood, and he applied for this after completing his studies in 1835. His bishop, however, had decided that there would be no more

ordinations for the time being, as Bohemia had a high number of priests. Neumann traveled to America with the hope of being ordained to the priesthood. He was ordained in June of 1836 by Bishop John Dubois at old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. After his ordination, St. John was assigned by the bishop to work with recent German immigrants in mission churches in the Niagara Falls area, where he visited the sick, taught catechism, and trained teachers to take over when he left. From 1836 until 1840, Neumann served as the founding pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Williamsville, New York. In 1840, he applied to join the Redemptorist Fathers, was accepted, and entered the novitiate of the Congregation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—becoming their first candidate in the New World. He took his vows as a full member of the Congregation in Baltimore, Maryland, in January 1842, and, after six years of difficult but fruitful work, he was appointed the Provincial Superior for the United States. He was naturalized as a citizen of the United States in Baltimore on February 10, 1848. In March 1852, Neumann was consecrated as Bishop of Philadelphia. He was the first bishop in the United States to organize a Catholic diocesan school system, and he increased the number of Catholic schools in his diocese from two to 100. His construction campaign extended to parish churches as well. His facility with languages endeared him to the many new immigrant communities in the city. As well as ministering to newcomers in German, he also spoke Italian fluently and ministered personally to a growing congregation of Italian-speakers in his private chapel. He eventually established the first Italian national parishes in the country for them. Neumann’s efforts to expand the Catholic Church throughout his diocese was not without opposition. The Know Nothings, an anti-Catholic political party, was at the height of its activities, setting fire to convents and schools. Discouraged, Neumann wrote to Rome asking to be replaced as bishop, but he received a reply from Pope Pius IX insisting that he continue. While running errands on January 5, 1860, Neumann collapsed and died on a city street, due to a stroke. He was 48 years old. His date of death, January 5, is now celebrated as his feast day in the Roman Catholic Church in

the United States of America. The first step toward proclamation of Neumann as a saint was his being declared “Venerable” by Pope Benedict XV in 1921. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council on October 13, 1963, and was canonized by that same pope on June 19, 1977. His feast days are January 5 on the Roman calendar for the general Church and March 5 in the Czech Republic. Following his canonization, the National Shrine of Saint John Neumann was constructed at the Parish of St. Peter the Apostle in Philadelphia. His remains rest under the altar of the shrine within a glasswalled reliquary. In 1980, Our Lady of the Angels College, founded by the congregation of Franciscan Sisters he had founded and located within the archdiocese, was renamed Neumann College. It was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2009.
To commemorate the Neumann Bicentennial, the Redemptorist priests who care for his shrine authorized a special traveling exhibition. Louis DiCocco of the Liturgical Arts Studio in Havertown, Pennsylvania, was commissioned to design and oversee construction of the exhibition. The American Walnut box, handcrafted and assembled at DiCocco’s studio, contains a relic or bone from the saint as well as a vestment he once wore and gloves in which he was buried. This sacred box will travel throughout the archdiocese and beyond during the Neumann Year, which began on January 5, 2011, and will end on June 23, 2012. —SPJST—

Anton Vrazel Gives to TPMM
In the 50s after brothers Anton, Alfred, and Lawrence Vrazel, Jr. decided to start a polka band, Anton Vrazel purchased a piano keyboard accordion and the band began playing at local dance halls. Anton’s brother Alfred was playing the button accordion and saxophone while brother Lawrence, Jr. was playing the drums. Anton decided that he too wanted to try his hand at playing the saxophone. He purchased a Conn Silver C melody saxophone. Although he did play it at some of their appearances, it soon became apparent to Anton that his true love was the accordion. He did not get as much pleasure out of playing the saxophone as he did the accordion. He soon turned his full attention to the accordion. By 1960, he had stopped playing the saxophone at their personal appearances. The accordion became an important centerpiece in the Vrazels’ Polka Band, and the saxophone found its place in a corner in his music room. It stayed there until January 2011 when he pulled it out to prepare it for donation to the Texas Polka Music Museum (TPMM). Due to its rare nature, he wanted to share it with others. C melody saxophones were being
produced in early 1900s but came to an end in 1929 during hard economic times. After the economy turned around, the alto and tenor saxophones were of primary interest to musicians, so production of the C melody saxophone did not start up again. The Lawrence Vrazel, Jr. family also donated a one-row Lyra button accordion made in Germany around 1900. Mr. Vrazel inherited the accordion from his father-in-law Frank Pospisil who got it from his father who brought it with him when they moved to the United Stated from Czechoslovakia. Anton, Alfred, and Lawrence Vrazel are all members of Lodge 15, Buckholts, where the Vrazel band picture was taken around the year of 1958. Both instruments can be seen at the Texas Polka Music Museum, located at 625 North Main in historic downtown Schulenburg, Texas. The museum is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Submitted by, Glen Chervenka Linda Wilde Lodge 24, Cyclone —SPJST—
