A Bloomin’ Good Time
This week’s Vestnik includes photos and results from the Bloomin’
Temple Car Show held Saturday, April 16 in downtown Temple. SPJST was once again proud to work with the Temple Chamber of Commerce and City of Temple to host the festival’s car show. The car show was also a fundraiser for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial, and we brought in $4,804.76 in proceeds. Thank you to each and every participant who entered the show and brought those bright, shiny, clean vehicles to be displayed for all to see and admire. The car show theme was “Saluting the Red, White and Blue,” and so many people commented about the beautiful patriotic colors and flags in the car show display area. Car shows are a lot of fun, and there is a lot of camaraderie among the participants. And, that was certainly evident at Bloomin’ Temple. The silent auction included more than 100 items. Thank you to everyone who donated and/or purchased silent auction items. We greatly appreciate every dollar that was raised. Special thanks to the volunteers who helped out in so many ways. The show was a big success once again, and could not have been so without all of these elements coming together. We were honored to have 12 SPJST members displaying their vehicles. Thanks to Jim and Jere Wallace of Lodge 15, Buckholts; Frank Volek of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; Don Psencik and Bob Shafer, both of Lodge 47, Seaton; Joe Hromadka of Lodge 54, West; Butch Doss and Johnnie J. Gaidusek, Jr., both of Lodge 66, Waco; Hiram Dixon and Kay Nan Ledger, both of Lodge 87, Temple; Greg McCarthy of Lodge 187, Round Rock; and Paul and Rhonda McCann of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. The day was beautiful; however, we will remember 2011 as the year
that all of the cars were coated with ashes that drifted to Central Texas from wildfires burning across the state and from an historic fire that burned a large warehouse just blocks from the festival grounds. The festival gets bigger every year. It attracted more than 10,000 people on Saturday. Next year’s seventh annual festival promises to be even bigger and better. Plans are already underway!
One Good Turn Deserves Another A man happened upon a limousine broken down along the roadway. “I can’t figure out what’s wrong,” the driver confessed, so the fellow took a look under the hood. He quickly spotted the trouble, and in a few minutes the engine was running again. The driver offered to pay him, but the man refused, saying he was just glad to help out. As he turned to start back to town, the rear window of the limo opened. “Thank you very much for your help,” the passenger called. “How can I repay you?” Looking inside, the man recognized a wealthy banker from town. Again, he refused payment, but asked one favor: “Could you send my wife some flowers? She’d be thrilled.” “Consider it done,” the banker replied, then asked the man for his address. They parted company, and the man only half expected to ever hear from the banker again. But the next day, a truck pulled up to the man’s house with flowers for his wife. Attached to the bouquet was a note that said: “You’re lucky to be married to such a caring person. When I offered to pay him for his act of kindness, he thought only of you.” And there was a postscript: “Although he refused any reward, I’ve cancelled the mortgage on your house. Such virtue should be rewarded.”

Americans Invited to “Join Hands” to Build Fort Hood Memorial
The Join Hands America Webathon will be hosted online at www.joinhandsamerica.com this Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6 and in conjunction with nationwide Join Hands Day on Saturday, May 7, to raise a greater awareness of the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. Individuals, businesses, and service organizations wanting to contribute or make fundraising inquiries are invited to call in, visit the website, or drop by webathon headquarters at the Shilo Inn Ballroom, located at 3701 South W. S. Young Boulevard in Killeen, Texas, between 8 a.m. through 10 p.m. Live entertainment will be presented on the hour from 6 to 8 p.m. on all three days. Live coverage will be presented on the www.joinhandsamerica.com website periodically throughout the day. The toll-free call in number is (888) 836-9877.
Background A year and a half has passed since gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Thirteen people were killed and 32 were wounded. Thanks to the heroic intervention of two Fort Hood police officers, the rampage was brought to an end. The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones or who had recently returned from them. On the afternoon of November 5, 2009, 13 Americans were sacrificed for their country — not on the distant soils of Iraq or Afghanistan — but in Fort Hood, Texas. In the aftermath of this tragic event, memorial services were held to pay tribute to those who had died or who had been injured. From that initial outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event came the concept of establishing a permanent public and living memorial. The site will serve to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. The idea for establishing the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial was conceived by
generate the funding necessary to bring the project to completion. The initial response to the memorial project has been gratifying as individuals, veterans groups, businesses, and civic organizations have been stepping up to donate or pledge support. To date, more than $75,000 has been raised. Approximately $500,000 is needed. This amount includes an endowment to provide for the maintenance and upkeep of the memorial and garden. Many excellent projects will be completed by lodges throughout the state in which youth and adults join together to do good in their community. Thanks to all lodges who plan to participate in this worthy event. Please remember there is one more step that needs to be completed so your lodge can receive the $100 incentive money from the Home Office. If you have not already done so, please go online to www.joinhandsday.org to register your project. As soon as we receive confirmation from Join Hands Day that you registered your project, we will cut a check for your lodge and get it in the mail to you.
SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament The SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament will be held at Lions Park in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, May 14. Adults (ages 16 and above) will be able to participate. Teams will consist of two persons (two males, two females, or mixed – one male, one female). Pre-registration by Monday, May 9 is strongly encouraged so that we will have an idea of how much food to purchase for lunch. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 with tournament play starting at 10 a.m. If you will recall, all state tournaments are open to members as well as non-members, so please invite your fellow members as well as non-member friends to participate. For additional information or to preregister, see the article on page three of this week’s Vestnik.
Remember our Fallen Soldiers Monday, May 30 is Memorial Day Please remember all of our fallen soldiers and also, remember our troops overseas and at home. Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.”
SPJST Flag Day Observance June 14 All SPJST members and guests are cordially invited to attend the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony on Tuesday, June 14 at William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home, located at 1424 S. Martin Luther King Lane in Temple, Texas. Make plans now to attend this patriotic event. More details will be published in an upcoming issue of the Vestnik. End of Summer Getaway Due to popular demand, good times again await you at the Corpus Christi Getaway. Start making your plans now to join us on August 12 to 14 for a funfilled weekend. This year, rooms have been blocked at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. To make your reservations, please call the hotel and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rate. Additional details will appear in the Vestnik as they become available.
SPJST Cookbook The officers and directors at their recent Supreme Lodge meeting approved a new and updated SPJST Cookbook to be published. We are in the process of setting up a website so that you may submit your recipes. Please watch the Vestnik for the website, or you may submit your recipes to the attention of Colleen Jenke at the Home Office. We are looking for new recipes that were not published in the previous two cookbooks. We will designate a special sec-
tion for “no sugar added” recipes. The deadline for submitting recipes will be September 1 in order to have the cookbooks available for purchase by Christmas. In addition to the standard cookbook, a CD with the recipes will be available for purchase. Start getting all your favorite recipes together today for the new edition!
SPJST State Bowling Tournament Mark your calendar now for the first SPJST State Bowling Tournament. This event will be held at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas, on September 17. Early registration is encouraged so that we can get the team roster to the bowling center the week prior to the event. Teams will consist of five person teams (five men, five women, or a mixture of men and women). As all other SPJST State Tournaments, this tournament will be open to members as well as non-members. The registration fee will be $20 for members and $25 for non-members. All proceeds from this tournament will be split between the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC), Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, and the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. Please contact me by June 1 if any lodge or individual wishes to donate to the special drawing or silent auction. Watch future issues of the Vestnik for details as they become available. Mother’s Day The month of May is a very busy month. The most important date to remember will be May 8. Mother’s Day is a special date for many. The United States celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. In the 1880s and 1890s, there were several attempts to establish a Mother’s Day, but they didn’t succeed beyond the local level. The holiday was created by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908 as a day to honor one’s mother. Jarvis wanted to accomplish her mother’s dream of making a celebration for all mothers, although the idea didn’t take off until she enlisted the services of wealthy Philadelphia mer-

chant John Wanamaker. She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914. The holiday eventually became so highly commercialized that many, including its founder, Anna Jarvis, considered it a “Hallmark Holiday,” one with an overwhelming commercial purpose. Jarvis eventually ended up opposing the holiday she had helped to create. She died in 1948, regretting what had become of her holiday. In the United States, Mother’s Day remains one of the biggest days for sales of flowers, greeting cards, and the like; it is also the biggest holiday for long-distance telephone calls. Please remember all of our mothers and mothers-to-be this month by honoring them at your May meeting. They do so much in every day life without being thanked as often as they should be. We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to call me (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke@wmconnect.com; or contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575 or email tammym@spjst.com. reflect thoughts of Easter. After the business meeting, Alfred Gonzalez gave a talk about his career. Alfred is a deputy sheriff employed by Victoria County Sheriff’s Department. It was a very interesting talk – telling us how he began his career and ending with where he is today. It takes a person who is physically fit as well as mentally and physically trained. He has taken several classes and seminars becoming certified at many levels. You also have to keep safety as your primary concern . . . protecting the public and protecting and caring for the inmates as well as protecting yourself. I had no idea how much training this career requires. It takes a special person with a true desire to keep peace, protect, and serve. Thank you, Alfred, for keeping Victoria a safe place to live. We do appreciate you so much. And, thank you for your presentation! Alfred and his wife Anna are very involved with our youth club. They have three active sons in the youth program, and we are fortunate to have this family in our lodge. We will celebrate Mother’s Day at the next meeting on Thursday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. I know it’s after the holiday, but we can still honor our mothers! We hope to see you then! Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on April 14, 2011. Dorothy Prachyl, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Eleanora Pelzel, Ann Clagett, Martha Ritchey, and myself arrived at 8 a.m. We arranged the table and chairs. Ann started decorating the tables in the Easter theme, and the rest of us started stretching Lil Kosarek’s quilt. President Dorothy got the coffee going. Everything was going well and before you knew it, we were quilting. Thanks to all who came early to quilt. We quilted until 12 noon and had 22 members and three guests — Joe Ehrenberger, Ginny Svehlak, and Dorothy Bobalek. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch as always. We had several good casseroles, many other dishes, and many out-of-this-world desserts. Thank you all and thank you to the clean up crew. Sorry, I didn’t get your names. The quilters returned to quilting. President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for Carl Pelzel, husband of Sunshine Lady Eleanora; Janie Thorton, sister of member Mildred Krajca;

time no-see member Joan Strunc. Please come again; we have missed you. President Dorothy thanked Ann for the lovely Easter decorations and thanked all for coming. We also discussed what the Circle would do in memory of Larry Laznovsky. More discussion will be held next month. Lil thanked everyone for returning the sewn quilt squares. I think this is for our Christmas quilt which will be another pretty one. The door prize was brought by Irene Prachyl and won by Dorothy J. She said that was the first time she has ever won after the many years she has been coming. I must apologize for not mentioning that last month, Henrietta Milan from Fort Worth donated a lovely door prize, and it was won by Joyce Ehrenberger. We did appreciate it so much. The Circle wants to thank Cathy Vanden Eykel for the many large trash bags full of scrap material she brought to the Circle for all to go through. Also, I want to thank Jan Johnson grandmother of the great-granddaughter Sarah whom I keep two days a week; she sent three boxes of material.
Page 15
Did we ever have a good time rummaging through all that material! I think everyone found something she wanted. President Dorothy announced the next meeting will be May 12. She wished everyone a happy Easter. Then, President Dorothy adjourned the meeting.
Other News Congratulations to Ka Lynn Long. Remember, last month, I wrote that she will be competing in Sherman, Texas, at the Texas-Oklahoma Shootout in archery. Well, guess, what? She won first place in elementary school division. She came home with a big trophy, bow and arrow, and a belt buckle. How great; keep it up! She is the granddaughter of Victoria Vlk. Congratulations to Dorothy Prachyl. She has a new great-granddaughter Lauren Grace Flippen, six pounds, 13 ounces born March 25 to Jody and Laynne Flippen. Libbie Vrla always has an unusual story to tell. I hope I can get it right: Libbie said that Helen Patil in Fort Worth called to tell her that Carl Pelzel Eleanora’s husband passed away. Lib-
bie couldn’t figure out how she knew Eleanora and how she knew Libbie knew Eleanora. Anyway, Helen and Eleanora are first cousins and grew up in Muenster. Betty Landsfeld also at one time lived in Muenster and knew Helen and Eleanora back then. Helen also at one time lived a couple of doors from Libbie in Fort Worth. Are you confused yet? —I am. When Helen heard of Carl’s passing, she called to tell Betty. Betty told her to call Libbie as Betty and Libbie belong to our sewing circle. When Helen called Libbie, she didn’t tell her Betty was the reason that she called about Carl. Libbie just couldn’t figure it all out. She has now, and Eleanora enjoyed hearing about her first cousin Helen living and knowing Libbie in Fort Worth. She didn’t get to make Carl’s funeral, that is cousin Helen. Anyway, we all enjoyed the story. Libbie can tell it good. School is almost out. I can hardly believe granddaughter Calleigh will be graduating. She has been playing softball even with her knee injury. She has played really well. They had the prom last weekend. I want to tell all about it, but all went well. She really looked

pretty. I will miss her, but I still have grandson Tanner. He will be a freshman. Thank God for four more years. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter. Stay well and happy. See you all May 12. We will quilt, have a covered dish luncheon, door prize, and little gift exchange. Georgie Morales —SPJST—

RVOS Farm Mutual marks 110 years by Dr. Bob Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood
2011 marks the 110th anniversary of RVOS Farm Mutual Insurance Company. On April 23, 1901, this organization was founded as the Farmers Mutual Protective Association by nine Czech immigrants in the general store of the small farming community of Ocker, Texas, just outside of Temple in Bell County. This small group of local farmers saw great wisdom in sharing the burdens that so often accompanied the tragedies of fire, lightning, and storms. On April 11, 2011 the Texas House of Representatives recognized this outstanding organization with HR 830: RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, RVOS Farm Mutual Insurance Company is celebrating the 110th anniversary of its founding on April 23, 2011; and WHEREAS, In 1901, nine Texans of Czech descent who farmed land in the

SPJST Financial University
Strategies Designed to Meet Your Financial Goals By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Close your eyes and visualize your dream vacation or the shiny new car that you’ve always dreamed of having. Sure, looks great! Unfortunately, for many of us the planning stops right there. With a little planning and discipline the likelihood of achieving our goals can be dramatically improved. Consider i m p l e m e n t i n g James L. Lee, III one, if not all, of the strategies listed below to improve your financial picture. • Write down your financial goals and objectives and include deadlines. This will help you stay focused.
• Use credit cards as little as possible. Financing your lifestyle with credit cards is a trap. Reach for your checkbook instead.
• Payoff your credit cards each month. With the new minimum payment requirements of around 5 percent, consumers will get out of debt quicker. For example, on a $2,000 credit card bill at 18 percent interest, paying the former 2 percent minimum will still leave you paying 30 years from now. The interest will cost you over $5,000 on the $2,000 charge. By making the new 5 percent minimum payment, you will finish up in about seven years and the interest will be roughly $811.
• Spend a little, but save a little more. As your debts are paid off, save the “extra” cash each month. Many people are tempted to overspend with the “extra” cash. • Keep a savings balance of at least six months of expenses. This cash cushion can be used when emergencies do arise instead of charging on credit cards.
• Map out a college savings plan and begin funding early.
• Manage taxes early in the year and look for deductions, credits and deferral of income to reduce your tax bill. The savings on taxes can be used for other goals.
• Go for steady, consistent, long-term growth in your investment. By the time you read about a “hot tip,” it’s usually cold.
• Protect your valuables and income earning potential with appropriate insurance policies including mortgage, life, and disability policies.
Reunion notices are published at no charge and as a benefit to our SPJST members. First-run announcements may be edited to fit the space. Thereafter, and until the week prior to the reunion date and as space permits, notices will be run in an abbreviated form. Please include your SPJST lodge number/name, and your contact phone number. Thank you.

• Invest for retirement. At best, Social Security will cover only a fraction of the money you will need for retirement. Talk to your financial advisor about preparing for a comfortable retirement. • Create an estate plan. Many people think you must be super wealthy to do estate planning which is not true. Avoiding probate and passing assets to heirs estate tax free, may be the main goals.
Your financial advisor, CPA, and attorney will be able to assist in reaching all of these goals. As the saying goes, “those that fail to plan, plan to fail.” It’s never too late to begin taking a look at your financial picture and get on board with a real plan for you and your family’s future.

YAD Individual and Group Talent: A Place to Start
So, you want to perform at SPJST Youth Achievement Day? That’s great! Now where do you start? If you’re part of an active youth club, consider the possibility of joining in a group performance. There are two divisions: Junior Group is composed of youth club members up to age 12. Senior Group is composed of youth club members age 13 to high school senior. Your age as of June 1, 2011 will determine what group you fit in. As few as two individuals and as many as 15 may be part of a group performance. Please note that a junior youth may compete with a teen group talent; however, a teen youth may not compete with a junior group talent. Participating in the talent portion of the competition can be both a fun and educational experience. More than that, with a little preparation on your part, the audience will love it! What qualifies as group talent? Participants are encouraged to choose an
act that is age appropriate in regards to content and costuming. Other than that simple guideline, what you decide to do is pretty much up to your imagination. Here are a few ideas for starters: Dance Routine Comedy Skit Serious or Humorous Play Musical Ensemble Choral Group Magic Show Gymnastics Routine Cheerleading Routine Pantomime Routine “How to” Demonstration Puppet Show Music Video Reenactment

Enjoy YAD Talent and Royalty Competition and Send Stage Fright Packing!
Everyday life involves a lot of interaction and communicating with people. Effective communication is a valuable life skill you’ll use your entire life. SPJST District and State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) talent and royalty contests can help you learn to communicate in front of others. Only one problem, some people — maybe even you — get a little intimidated or even scared getting up in front of an audience. If you have stage fright, you may be able to take some

comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Millions of people all over the world, and even well-known performers and musicians, suffer from stage fright. Common symptoms experienced by people with stage fright are: Rapid Heartbeat Sweaty Palms Trembling Hands and Feet Tics and Jerky Movement Cold Sweat Dry Mouth
You may be able to add other symptoms to the list! Most symptoms of stage fright occur when people anticipate the performance. The good news is you can beat stage fright — and even make it work to your advantage! The key to presenting a solid individual or group talent performance or making an effective royalty speech

at YAD is being prepared and giving your audience something of value. If people in your audience walk away with something of value, they will consider you a success. If they walk away feeling more informed, better about themselves, or entertained, they will consider their time with you worthwhile. Take time to know the material that you will be presenting at YAD. Exercise discipline and dedication as you prepare for performance day. Practice in front of family and friends prior to the performance. Ask for feedback! If you have trouble, modify your act or speech so you feel more comfortable. Prior to performance, breathe long, deep breaths right before you respond to your cue in the performance. Breathing exercises can also help you focus on your presentation, instead of the reaction of the audience. A simple technique is to inhale as deep as you

can and as quickly as you can, and exhale very slowly. One of the best ways to beat stage fright altogether is to have fun and enjoy your own presentation or performance. Nothing in life will really change if you miss a few lines or stammer a bit while delivering your presentation. Know that the audience truly wants you to succeed. Put your best foot forward whenever you go out on stage, and enjoy the show. When you have fun, you can overshadow your worries and anxieties, and deliver a solid YAD performance.

Straw Sticking Out of My Boots
Welcome to SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s popular series in which you can learn things about the Czech language that you will not learn elsewhere, and enjoy music while doing it. In today’s edition, we’ll hear the song “Sprostý chlap,” or Vulgar Guy, by the popular Eben brothers. The phrase to listen out for is sláma mně čouhá z bot or straw sticking out of my boots.
The phrase “sláma mně čouhá z bot” translates as straw is sticking out of my boots. It’s quite an old expression that refers to people from the country, villagers and farmers. It comes from the times when people there still worked with straw, rather than commuting to cities for work. The song comes from a theatre play, which is probably the reason why the character says, ‘straw is sticking out of MY boots.’ More usually, the phrase would be used about someone else, as in sláma mu čouhá z bot – straw is sticking out of HIS boots. The Czech language has many expressions to belittle village people, many of which come from the languages of Czechs’ neighbours. You can dismiss someone from the country as buran – a redneck. The word comes from the old German bur, meaning farmer, which has also found

Czech, peanuts were first called burské oříšky, boor nuts. Another slur for country bumpkins is balík which literally means a parcel or a package. That might lead to the conclusion that the expression only appeared after straw in the fields was machine-packed into neat parcels, but the expression apparently comes from the Hungarian “balek,” meaning a simpleton. When you feel like expressing your metropolitan superiority over people from the village, you can also use the word křupan. That sounds like it is somehow connected to the verb křupat, to crack. But linguists believe it comes from the old Slavic word “krup” which once meant course or crude. Some more modern expressions include vidlák – someone who works with the pitchfork – and drn, a tuft of grass. — Jan Richter

The Endeavour Flies with a Czech
Space shuttle Endeavour lifted off for its final mission on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 3:47 p.m. During its 14day mission, Endeavour is scheduled to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and spare parts including two S-band communications antennas, a high-pressure gas tank, and additional spare parts for Dextre. The crew members for space shuttle Endeavour’s STS-134 mission are Commander Mark Kelly, Pilot Gregory H. Johnson, European Space Agency astronaut Roberto Vittori, Mission Specialists Michael Fincke, Greg Chamitoff, and Andrew Feustel, who is carrying the stuffed toy of Krtek, a Czech cartoon character, the lovable Mole immortalized in Zdeněk Miler’s books, cartoons, toys and now Space! Krtek, the Czechoslovak cartoon character invented by Zdeněk Miler in 1956, is a passenger - in plush form on the NASA space shuttle Endeavour when it goes on a 14-day mission. Astronaut Andrew Feustel - whose mother-in-law is from Znojmo, South Moravia - took a 19-centimeter stuffed version of Krtek along with him as one of his allotted 0.68 kilograms of personal items. http://www.ceskapozice.cz/en/news/society/krtek-hitch-rid e-space-shuttle-endeavour Safe journey and Godspeed to our astronauts! We met astronaut Drew Feustel with his lovely wife Indira at our 2010 Annual Gala in August in Prague Hall. We know on his previous flight, he took with him a well-known Czech book of poetry Cosmic Rays. How appropriate to take little Krtek with him this trip. Krtek is probably his children Ari and Aden’s favorite toy friend. Indi writes they are thrilled to expect visitors coming to Florida from the Czech Embassy in Prague and the Czech Academy of Sciences Astronomical Institute and certainly impressive—our United States President Obama and family. Also exciting is to have heard on CNN Commander Mark Kelly’s wife Representative Gabriella Giffords has also been cleared from her Houston Rehabilitation Center to attend the launch. Effie M. CCMH activities
Many of the lands of our heritage have much evidence of the season. Besides beautiful church services, Easter egg trees, ornamentation with flowers and old traditions prevail. Just a brief recap of the first quarter of our year 2011: On January 2, we held a reception for Prague organist Pavel Kohout with Houston’s Bach Society in Brno Gallery, and on January 22, we were participating with Museum Educators Day. In January, CCMH finally completed its air conditioning the third floor, the ceiling spray painted white to stabilize the insulation in readiness for someday having a ceiling installation. The next phase was build out of an 11feet by 14-feet art exhibit gallery immediately in front of the elevator now holding some early 1800s Karel Spillar artworks (giclees), a Czech Moravian master painter and some costume pieces of 1700 to 1800s textiles. The entire main room is dressed to accommodate the beautiful Ottervik Czech art glass/pottery/ porcelain collection. The Comenius Library (for Czech Moravian Jan Amos Komensky, known as Father of Education of the World) was emptied of stored items disposing of some, using some for display, or relocated for further conservation to the fourth floor and completely partitioned utilizing sheetrock that had remained from the building’s construction in 2004! The earlier purchased Rosewood Library units were transferred from the Conference Room to the Library and placed on order three additional units comprised of three sections in order to shelve books in storage and relocate books shelved in the new exhibition gallery (named donations to pay for these units gladly accepted). The entire area was electrified updating it from the raw storage area that remained until funds were collected to underwrite this timetable set to make the Hall in readiness to use by Saturday afternoon of our 17th Annual Members Friends Evening Festival Dinner on March 12 so we could hold

our reception there before dinner and the theatre Tin Trunk production (about Czech immigrant family premiering in Round Top Festival Hall July 30, 31 and August 6 and 7) in Prague Ballroom. The third floor named Plzen Galleries further awaits underwriting of $16,000 to carpet to complete its venue space. That is why we hope to harvest the funds in the very near future; eventually it must have restrooms, catering kitchen, and small offices for curating and conservation. In February, we held a great Moravian Archival Wines Tasting and Dinner. There is a great deal to learn about the ancient art of wines and how to drink them appropriately. Recently, we lectured via a translator and toured a group of Nepal refugees sponsored by Catholic Charities who are in Houston two years or less. We continue with the Mayor’s International Affairs Trade Development Council Europe. We were asked to give a leadership lecture to the senior graduating classes at Awty International School. On introduction, hearing of the dignitaries and Nobel prize winners who had preceded me as speakers in previous years, I truly wondered what I was doing there. The Headmaster told me it was to talk about what we had been doing at CCMH so I spoke about how history, culture, and heritage relate to art and education, about how we as volunteers built a beautiful Baroque Palace Museum, how we teach heritage, who we are is important to know from where we come to know to where we are going, to teach community outreach, and how to give back to the community. I ended by enumerating the incredible resources for education young people have today, but to realize when they go into the world of reality they can’t just text and tweet but must write business letters, spell, and add and subtract. We have served Child Protective Services Cultural Event, numerous heritage groups, and Westchester High School’s Model United Nations group besides general operations.

Our welcome to Houston for the Prague Shakespeare Festival Theatre group was so delightful. Did you know Shakespeare visited Prague, and they have an active Shakespeare association ever since? We had Sicilian wine tastings, Czech Pilsner Urquell and Czechvar from Ceske Budejovice beer tasting with Bits and Bites. We met Czech film star Pavel Kriz, and I regret if you missed it but the troupe is performing at Main Street Theatre – Chelsea Market April 13 through May 1 then two weeks May 18 to 28 in Prague at Vysehrad. For tickets and information, go to www.pragueshakespeare.org or call (281) 635-3557. All event proceeds went to the Prague Shakespeare Festival organization. Saturday, April 9 in Plzen Galleries, we enjoyed the “Young and Young at Heart” event with Brno artists, children’s book author and illustrator, Pavel Cech, guitarist/singer Lucie Bystronova, and professional story teller Sabina Seidlova. Sally Miller underwrote an array of desserts for the reception of food and drink. We certainly appreciate the assistance from our board members and the adults who donated $15 towards the library and other expenses. It was a wonderful Dr. Tom Sovik program. The Czech Trade Mission Czech Embassy held its Breakfast Business Seminar at the CCMH on April 26. We were excited to have this opportunity to host “Investing and Doing Business in the Czech Republic.” Please keep the date Sunday, May 29 open for a welcome visit of H.E. Karel Schwarzenberg, Czech government First Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs. We are grateful to Henry and Barbara Hermis for chairing the upcoming 2011 Annual Benefit Gala. Effie M.
