SPJST - smiles and happy attitudes
SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar hosted its annual dinner and country auction
on Sunday, May 1 at the lodge hall, and David and I had the pleasure of attending. We met so many wonderful people from Lodge 38 and the Kovar community. The day started with a delicious fried chicken and stew meal complete with all the trimmings, including one of my favorites—sauerkraut! After time for visiting and a cake walk, everyone gathered for an auction featuring 83 items donated from local businesses and individuals. We bid on and won a basket of home canned goodies from Stan and Dorothy Jean Lastovica. Delicious — and almost gone! Congratulations to Lodge 38 on a successful event! We really enjoyed it, and I think everyone else did, too, seeing all of the smiles and happy attitudes throughout the hall. And, thanks for keeping SPJST and its proud traditions in the Kovar community. Archiving Vestniks The Vestnik will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2012. To recognize this important milestone, we are partnering with Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) which so graciously volunteered to archive past Vestnik issues. The Vestniks will be scanned and placed in an online database that will be available for viewing and research. Thanks to the Supreme Lodge for approving this project. We are so excited to get started. TCGS President Charlene Hurta has been reviewing past issues, and she has found many interesting articles and photos from them. We will begin including these in the Vestnik
very soon. I’m sure it will bring back a lot of memories for many of you. Thank you, Charlene and TCGS, for your help! We look forward to working with you.
Member Services Directory Coming June 8 The Member Services Directory will be printed in lieu of the June 8 Vestnik. A benefit for SPJST members, this directory will include a listing of member-owned businesses and sales agents, lodge information, and other SPJST information.
The Real Secret to a Happy Marriage Jerry was at a marriage seminar, and the leader of the seminar, a lady, was asking everybody how long they were married for. When it was Jerry’s turn, Jerry said that he was married for almost 50 years. “Wow,” the leader gushed. “That’s amazing! Perhaps you can take a few minutes to share some insights with everybody on how you have stayed married to the same woman for so long. “Well,” Jerry said after thinking for a few moments, “I try to treat her nice, buy her presents, take her on trips . . . and best of all, for our 25th anniversary, I took her to the Bahamas.” “Well, that’s really beautiful, and a true inspiration for all of us,” the lady said. “Maybe you can tell us what you are going to do for your 50th anniversary,” she said with a smile. “Well,” Jerry said, “I’m thinking of going back to the Bahamas to pick her up.” —From greatcleanjokes.com —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on April meeting
President Charles Wilson opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for all military and SPJST members. Sixteen members and two guests were present. All officers were present, with the exception of Shirlene Matetzschk and Sheryl Wright absent due to illness. Teresa Anderson gave the treasurer’s report. We received a letter from the Elgin Library asking for donations for the various levels of their reading program. We also received a letter from Ag Life extension program, which covers various programs of assistance. We received an invitation from La Grange. They are sponsoring a Czech Broadway style musical. We are invited to attend. Gladys gave the ticket report. The April dance was the appreciation dance; there was no income. For the Jerry Haisler dance, we sold 100 tickets. Irene Helgren gave the house report. On March 19, we had the Cattleman cancer research dinner and dance. The hall was rented at a discount. April 2 was a wedding. Irene thanked Ray and Teresa for closing for her. Evelyn Gustafson sent get well cards to Billy Mogonye, Dud Morris, and Andrew Greinert. Evelyn is doing better also. Ray gave the trustee report for Sheryl Wright. Charles Wilson stated that the 35 cents mileage is not sufficient reimbursement. The SPJST Home Office is paying 51 cents. Ray suggested matching the Home Office’s rate. Teresa suggested calling Dolores Lundgren and asking what is the going rate Teresa will call Dolores and ef-

fective March 15, 2011, that will be the new rate. It is tabled for now. Charles will replace two emergency lights the next time he goes to the store. Charles called Jack at Hull Supply about the door next to the stage. He has not heard back from him. Joyce asked about replacing the trash cans in the restrooms. Ray will get Charles a catalogue for supplies. Alan was upset regarding a previous confrontation and considered stepping down as trustee. He reconsidered and will stay on. There was discussion about bringing in country and western bands, such as Debonaires, Mark Winston Kirk, Crop Dusters, and Weldon Henderson. Polka bands are not paying the bills. We need additional revenue. Sheryl will create and list events on Facebook (a social network on the Internet). We need the price and a permit for a flashing sign. We need to advertise. Possibilities are radio, newspaper, Vestnik, Austin 360, KVET Country calendar is free. Charles will check
with Gary Cook with the City of Elgin on the permit. Teresa needs to send refunds to people. Ray asked if Irene received the forms printed for refunds. There is confusion on refunds for rentals. Teresa was told to give refunds back to three clients, and they have not had their events. Charles Wilson gave the bar report. Charles stated that the door next to the stage needs to be replaced. The motion was made, seconded, and carried. The door will be replaced. Joyce Nelson gave the youth report. They are working on the Easter egg hunt. The scholarships are coming up. Diane and Donnie Cannon are getting the forms. The scholarship committee consists of Mike Mogonye, Joyce Nelson, and Charles Wilson. State Field Representative Hiram Dixon talked about the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. It is great to see the project coming together. This will be the SPJST Join Hands Day project—a three day event on May 5, 6, and 7. Hiram complimented the District Two sales agents. They have done very well in sales and production. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mikhaila Nelson and Lillian Wright. You can attract a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar. State Youth Director: May updates
Dear SPJST Youth Leaders, Wow! We are almost at the mid point of 2011—one month away! May is here, and that means school will soon be out and District Youth Achievement Days and camps are right around the corner. This will be a great year of activities and learning. I am looking forward to spending time with the youth at camp and getting to know them. I had a great experience with our youth at the second Youth Development Workshop held Saturday April 2 at Lodge 183, Arlington. Thank you to all who made it a successful day. We had 27 youth and 18 adults present at the workshop. I played a couple of ice breaker games with the youth, and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek spoke to the youth about fraternal history and parliamentary procedure. Melissa Victorick Brown spoke to the youth about public speaking and Youth Achievement Day talent. She also spoke to the youth who would be participating in YAD royalty competition. President Vanicek and I worked with the other youth on performing a skit for the adults. Both groups did an awesome job. Thank you to District Youth Counselors Bessie Petr and Janice Stevens, Assistant District Youth Counselors Lynda Novak and Diana Engelke, youth leaders, and Lodge 183, Arlington for giving us the opportunity to be with Districts Three and Four youth before their lock-in. I attended two spring meetings in April. The first meeting President Vanicek and I attended was District Four Spring Meeting. The meeting was hosted by Lodge 207, Iowa Park at the Coyote Ranch Resort in Wichita Falls, Texas. I had a great time visiting with District Youth Counselor Janice Stevens and the youth leaders from District Four. District Four had eight youth participate in the Czech Easter

The youth who participated in the contest did a fine job decorating their eggs.

Water Safety
Drowning is the second leading cause of death from unintentional injuries for people ages one to 19, according to the National Safety Council’s 2006 Accident Facts Report. Drowning rates have declined from 1996, but approximately 3,582 people drown each year. For every drowning that occurs, it is estimated that there are four neardrowning that result in hospitalization. Drowning may occur during swimming, boating, hunting, fishing, or even while taking a bath. Small children can even drown in a bucket of water. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around water is to learn how to swim and learn how to perform CPR in case an emergency occurs. Source: American Red Cross
Learn and practice water safety rules.
Wear a personal flotation device (PFD) when in or around water. A PFD or Per-
sonal Flotation Device is a device to help you float and it can save your life if you accidentally fall in the water. PFDs add buoyancy to your body, hold your head and body higher in the water for better visibility, and help keep your body warm. Air-filled swimming aids such as inner tubes and inflatable rafts are not PFDs.
Even if you have taken swimming lessons, you are still not “water safe.” You still need to follow water safety rules. Whether you are at a pool, beach, pond, lake, or other swimming area, always check for a lifeguard. Lifeguards make sure that swimmers follow the rules and are trained to help in case there is any trouble in or around the water.
Follow the posted rules. Rules are usually posted where you can easily see them. Examples of rules to look for are signs that say “Danger,” “Don’t Swim Here,” and “No Diving.”
Swim only when you are rested. Never jump or dive into the water unless the lifeguard or an adult says it is safe.
Never eat candy or chew gum when you are swimming. You could choke!
Don’t mess around. Running, pushing, or shoving people in or near the water can cause serious injuries to you or your friends.
When in the water, stay away from diving boards, slides, and boat ramps.
Don’t swim at night in lakes, ponds or the ocean. Swim only in pools that are well lit and have a lifeguard on duty. Leave the water immediately if you hear thunder or see lightning.
When you go swimming in a new place, always check with a lifeguard or adult before going in the water to make sure it is safe. There could be hidden dangerous objects just below the surface of the water like rocks, branches, and shallow places. Play it safe in the water. Always swim with a buddy in an area that is supervised by a lifeguard or adult. It is dangerous to swim alone. Always pay attention to your surroundings.

On May 1, 2011, SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club met, and Mrs. Beverly talked about us bringing our sleeping bags and spending the night in the hall all night one day this summer. We talked about playing games and having fun. This sounded like so much fun to me, and I can’t wait to do it. I love SPJST! Tanner Wood —SPJST—

The meeting was brought to order by Shelby-Lynn Rose at 4:10 p.m. Kyle Brinkman led the Pledge of Allegiance. Shelby-Lynn called roll with nine youth and four adults present. We discussed old business of what we would like to do this summer. We plan on going to a baseball game. Also, we planned our summer pool party. Lodge 9, Snook Youth Members Participate in Little Dribbler Tournament
Players include Natalie Vacha of Lodge 9, Snook; Sierra Sebesta of Lodge 9, Snook; Deashia Lister; Jaycie Brisco of Lodge 9, Snook; Keyanna Young; Kalai Sample; Elizabeth See; Grace Lewis of Lodge 9, Snook; Alexis Vowell; Kaitlyn Kindt of Lodge 9, Snook; Avery Kovar of Lodge 9, Snook; and Sydney Faust of Lodge 9, Snook. Not pictured are Head Coach Justin Lewis of Lodge 9, Snook and Assistant Coach Keith Young.
The Snook Little Dribbler Junior Girls Team (9 and 10 years old) advanced to the Little Dribbler National Tournament held April 20 to 23, 2011. The six-division, 90-team, double elimination tournament held 168 games in four days. The team advanced to the national tournament as runner-up through the Buffalo Regional Tournament played March 21 to 26. The Snook Junior Girls team started tournament play with a hard fought win over Malakoff. Pressure defense and offensive scoring by five players helped Snook overcome the height and quickness of the Malakoff team. Outstanding post play by Keyanna Young and Kaitlyn Kindt both offensively and defensively, and pressure defense by Grace Lewis, Deashia Lister and Natalie Vacha, kept Snook in the game. In their second game of tournament play, Snook girls faced Martins Mill in a defensive struggle before eventually losing by
two. Both teams were held to almost half of their normal scoring offense. Snook girls proceeded through the bracket by winning games over Slocum, Normangee, and New Waverly, before meeting Martins Mill again in the semi-final game and losing by eight points. Coach Justin Lewis commented, “It seemed like Martins Mill couldn’t miss a basket, and we could make one.” Martins Mill went on to win the Little Dribblers Junior Girls National Tournament with a championship game score of 30-8 over Franklin. Coaches Justin Lewis and Keith Young both agree that this group of girls have great chemistry on the basketball court and carry a bright future for the Snook Girls basketball program. Another less poetic way of saying much the same thing is the expression on by se pro ní rozkrájel — he would slice himself into pieces for her; or on by se pro ní přetrhl — he would tear himself apart to make her happy — much like the English, he would bend over backwards.

eyes. Or he will bring the blue colour down from the sky for her — snese jí modré z nebe.
And finally, there is the expression opatrovat jako oko v hlavě — to take as good care of someone — to protect them as much as you protect your own eyes. And that brings us to the end of today’s lesson. This is Daniela Lazarová saying thanks for learning Czech with me and na shledanou.
When a woman is so cosseted Czechs say chová ji ve vatičce — he keeps her in cotton wool — as if she were a precious breakable object. Or chová jí jako vejce malovaný — he treats her as if she were a painted egg. The latter refers to Easter eggs which are blown out of their shells before they are painted and need to be handled with extreme caution.
A man who is thus obsessed will fulfil his woman’s every wish udělá co jí na očích vidí — meaning he will fulfil every wish he sees expressed in her

To Carry Someone in Your Arms
Nosit někoho na rukou means to carry someone in your arms. Czechs use it to say a woman is being taken good care of by a man. On jí na rukou nosí means he carries her around in his arms – in other words, she does not need to make any effort.
