Rogers ISD Teacher Retires, Leaves Legacy Behind rings at Rogers Independent School District this week, teacher Brenda Williams of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone will be putting down her chalk after 38 years of service. Former students, teaching peers, and friends gathered on May 18, 2011, at Olive Garden Italian Restaurant in Temple, Texas, to honor Brenda’s retirement. “Having taught 38 years still seems unreal to me,” Mrs. Williams says. “God has blessed me greatly.” Brenda began her education in a one-room school called Ad Hall at Pettibone, Texas, with about 20 students. “Then, I went to the big city of Cameron in the fifth grade, and I graduated from there,” she adds. After graduating from C.H. Yoe High School in 1966, Brenda earned her associate of arts degree from Temple College in 1970 and her bachelor of arts from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1971. She also com-
pleted her master of education from Texas A&M University in 1986. Brenda began her career at Rogers ISD in 1973. “Being hired in Rogers was a blessing because that’s where we lived, and I was able to be close to my children as they went through school,” she says. All of her 38 years of service has been at Rogers Middle School (formerly Rogers Junior High). She has taught sixth grade social studies and language arts, seventh grade Texas history, and eighth grade American history and language arts. A lot has changed since Brenda’s first day on the job in 1973. She defines the biggest challenge as the advancement of technology in the classroom. “I grew up without computers and taught so many years without a computer in the classroom,” she says. “It was a new experience for me—sometimes not an easy one.” She has also sponsored many extra

Congrats, Mrs. Williams! Congratulations to Mrs. Brenda Williams, a lifelong member of Lodge 24, Cyclone! (Article on page 1.) Mrs. Williams was a great teacher, but she was more than that to her students. She was our friend. She was someone who we could talk to. I remember her as a woman of good character - something that she exemplified in her classroom. She made learning fun. And, I always enjoyed her classes in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. She really believed in us, and she followed our lives and progress throughout high school. I remember looking up in the stands from cheering on the sidelines or marching in band—Mrs. Williams and her husband Pud were always there. They supported us at every school event. And, to this day, when I attend a Rogers football game, I still see them supporting the mighty, mighty Eagles! I very much enjoyed serving on the student council with Mrs. Williams as sponsor. She taught us to work hard and to give back to our school and local community. That reminds me a lot of fraternalism . . .

From the State FAC
June Fraternal Updates
Dear Members,
SPJST Flag Day Observance June 14 The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August, 1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day.
Please take a few moments on this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag, and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren, and friends about what the flag means to you. Because others have given their lives to secure our freedom, we have the freedom to participate in this national observance. Your lodge may want to join with veterans’ organizations in your community and be a part of the celebration. This would count as a patriotic act on your lodge mid-year report. For those members who are in the Temple area, SPJST Home Office will partner with William R. Courtney Texas Veterans Home, located at 1424 Martin Luther King, Jr. in Temple, for a Flag Day celebration. All members and guests are cordially invited to at-

tend. The program starts at 10 a.m. with refreshments following. Make plans now to attend this patriotic event.
Reserve Your Room Now for the End of Summer Getaway Due to popular demand, good times again await you at the fifth annual fraternal fun Corpus Christi getaway. Start making your plans now to join us on August 12 to 14 for a fun-filled weekend. SPJST members will be treated to a hospitality party on Friday evening. Saturday morning beach activities include a sand sculpture contest, horseshoe tournament, sandbag races, and volleyball. After lunch, activities will move indoors for a “42” domino tournament, bunco, and pool time. Entertainment for the evening will be finalized soon, and details will be forthcoming in my July Fraternal Updates. SPJST has secured special room rates for members who want to take advantage of the fun-filled weekend. If you have not already made your reser-

vation, please do so soon to insure that you have a room at this special rate. This year, rooms have been blocked at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. To make your reservations, please call the hotel and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rate. Additional details will appear in the Vestnik as they become available.
SPJST Cookbook The officers and directors at their recent board meeting approved a new and updated SPJST Cookbook to be published. A page on the www.spjst.org website has been set up so that you may submit your recipes online. Or, you may submit your recipes to the attention of Colleen Jenke at the Home Office. We are looking for new recipes that were not published in the previous two cookbooks. There will be a new section for “No Sugar Added” recipes. The deadline for submitting recipes will be September 1 in order to have the cookbooks available for purchase
Tournament Guidelines 1. Must be a member, at least 16 years of age, in good standing of the SPJST to play in the adult tournament. There will be a separate contest for those under the age of 16. Challenge is open to bowlers and non-bowlers. 2. Teams will consist of five members – any combination of men and women and any combination of member/non-member. PLEASE NOTE THAT INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A FULL TEAM IN ORDER TO ENTER THE TOURNAMENT. Lodges may enter multiple teams. 3. Winning lodge will be determined by pin fall. The total pin fall for each lodge will be divided by the total number of participants for that lodge to determine an average for the three games bowled. The lodge with the highest average will be declared the winner. A minimum of five bowlers from a lodge must compete in order for the lodge to be considered for lodge trophies. 4. Each participant will bowl three games. 5. Awards will be presented to the top three males and top three females for high series and high game. 7. SPJST member cost will be $20 per person. Observe Father’s Day— Sunday, June 19, 2011 In the United States, the first modern Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Nonongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother’s Day, which was recently celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away. Another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington.
Page 5
Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s efforts to establish Mother’s Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.
Therefore, Father’s Day was born as a token of love and gratitude that a daughter cherishes for her beloved father. Roses are the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.

It’s a great cause that helps change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. We are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. I chose Autism Speaks, Inc. because as many of you know, my oldest son has been diagnosed with Aspergers which is an autism spectrum disor-

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on May 12, 2011. Pat Fowler, Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, and I arrived around 8 a.m. We arranged table and chairs and stretched Pat’s quilt which is a pretty one. By then, we had quilters all around — Eleanora, Martha, Ginny, Dorothy J., Dorothy Booth, Dorothy Bobalek, Irene, and Victoria. We quilted until lunch time and had 20 members and three guests — Olga Vrla Pechak, and Joe and Julius. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you everyone, and thank you to the clean up crew. Quilters returned to quilting, and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Victor Trojacek and Mary Pat Clements, both related to several

of our members, and for Michael Claude Vogel, cousin of Eleanora Pelzel. Margaret Martinek read the minutes of the last meeting, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced May birthday celebrants— Ella Mae Zmolek, Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, and Ginny Svehlak. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Ann, Dorothy, and Ginny. Ella Mae was not in attendance, but we hope that she had a great birthday. Quilt scheduler Pat announced that we will quilt for Eleanora in June; no quilting in July - that is when we have our elephant sale and show and tell; the Sewing Circle Christmas quilt in August, Dorothy J. in September, Joyce in October, Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt in November; then it is December and Christmas party time. Ann read a thank you note from Eleanora for all the cards, food,
thoughts, and prayers she received when she lost her husband Carl; and thank you from Bessie Laznovsky for her visits and cards she received while in the nursing home for rehab. She is home now and doing well. We have missed you and look forward to when you can come for a visit. Libbie Vrla introduced her guest Olga Vrla Pechak. We were happy to see and have her visit. There were many whom she knew. She donated to the Circle a beautiful quilt top and bottom fabric for us to quilt. We thank you, and hope you come again to visit before you move to Houston or Austin. A discussion was held on the amount of our donation to the Sokol Hall building fund in memory of Larry Laznovsky. Joyce Ehrenberger made a motion. It was seconded by Pat Fowler, and it was approved by all. Thank you went out to Libbie as she had copies of our group picture made and handed out to all. If you

were unable to attend the meeting, she gave me extras. Ask me at the next meeting. Thank you to Irene Prachyl for the table full of sewing and quilting tips that she talked about and showed how it all works. It was really neat. I hope I can remember some of them. It was so good to see Mildred Trlica. Her hand surgery is doing well. We were glad to have her back. President Dorothy asked if anyone had something good to tell us. New member Ginny Svehlak told us that she is a five-year cancer survivor. We hope that she can make many more five years. Ginny also said with some of the material that she got at the last meeting, she has dressed 23 dolls for the St. John Church bazaar. How great! I know Our Dear Lord will bless and keep her safe. Martha Ritchey told of her daughter buying a school raffle ticket at Tom’s Store, and she won $100. I wish that I was that lucky.

Margaret Martinek had to leave early as her husband Emil had a doctor’s appointment. He is recovering from a minor tractor-mower accident. He had a piece of wire removed from his chest. She said that he is doing okay. We wish him well. President Dorothy said that her grandson Andrew Cole in Colorado was inducted into the National Honor Society. Congratulations! The door prize was brought by Dorothy J. and won by Ann Clagett. Little gifts were handed out which is always fun. I won a beautiful handembroidered scarf brought by guest Olga. I was so excited since we are double cousins. I have a wonderful keepsake. President Dorothy thanked everyone for coming and asked for all to help in putting the tables and chairs back in the hall. I didn’t see who took out the trash, but thank you.
Other News Irene Prachyl’s daughter Cheryl Blumberg, her husband Ken, and their children in Rome, Italy, were invited to the Ambassador’s residence in Rome for a meet and greet. They got to meet and shake hands with Hillary Clinton. How exciting that must have been. Bertha Podhrasky’s sister Ann Zurovetz’s son Timothy Joseph Zurovetz was honored at the Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation at Fort Worth on April 26. His name is on the Police Memorial Stone in Austin, and Ann received a plaque honoring him. What a wonderful tribute to Timothy. Bertha and Julius Podhrasky’s children honored Julius with a surprise 90th birthday dinner and party at the home of their son Bob and wife Di. All the children and grandchildren were there. That same day, Julius’ grandson Kris Graves, turned 20. We saw pictures. Julius had a 90th crown on his head. It looked as if they all had a wonderful time. Dorothy Prachyl’s family enjoyed Mother’s Day weekend at a beach house on Pirates Beach in Galveston. Daughter Cathy Cole’s family flew down from Denver. They all had a wonderful time. Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger spent last weekend in Jefferson, Texas, where there was a spring festival and a Civil War reenactment. After the 10 a.m. parade down Main Street, there was a shootout between the Blues and the Grays. The full battle reenactment was on a farm outside of town. A lot of the townspeople dressed in period

costumes, and there was a formal ball on Saturday. In between, there was lots of looking and buying at the many flea markets and antique stores. I almost forget to congratulate Pat Fowler’s grandsons Justin and Jacob Mraz. They both placed in the archery contest and got to compete in the Waco, Texas, round. I just have to tell this story. Our member and my dear friend Dorothy Valek, another dear friend Anna Lee Toth, and I went to school together. We started first grade in Bardwell and our last two years, we went and graduated from St. John Catholic School. That was 60 years ago this year. Who would have thought that we three, as we were called the Bardwell girls, would be watching and enjoying our granddaughters playing softball together on the same team at Ennis High School. Well, it happened and have we had a great time. Dorothy’s granddaughter Megan Hickman played right field, would catch everything that came her way, and could really hit. Anna Lee’s granddaughter Taylor Maliska was the pitcher. She is a freshman and was the best and could also hit. My granddaughter Calleigh was really good at short stop. She didn’t get to bat as she couldn’t run bases with her knee injury. The team made the playoffs. They won the first round beating a team from Bryan, Texas. It was two out of three. Hallsville won the first game. Ennis won the second and lost the third game 5 to 3. Even though they didn’t make it to the third round of playoffs, we all enjoyed
being together at all the games, cheering for our granddaughters. Something we will remember always. Everyone stay well and happy. I hope to see you June 9. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—
Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
17
It’s Monday morning about 11 o’clock, a storm has rolled in, it’s black as night, raining like the devil, and it’s the morning after Corina and Robert Cranfill’s 25th anniversary party at the National Hall. Corina is the daughter of Frank and Joyce Tesar, hall managers, and as I understand that she grew up around so many of you. Those of you who attended, I know enjoyed the afternoon of food, dancing, and fellowship. Those of you who didn’t make it, missed a fun celebration. Congratulations to this lovely young couple, and we wish them many more years of happiness. Our Ladies Circle meeting on May 10 was called to order with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance by the 42 members present. We missed Joe Kozel’s music as he and Mary Ann were making some Meals on Wheels deliveries and came in late. Since I am rather new to the group, it is becoming clear to me that many of our members volunteer their time unselfishly and make a real difference to so many. Their interests and talents are varied and even unique at times. Mary Ann Krivanek gave our “thought for the day.” Guests welcomed were Joyce Kostohryz, Peggy Dresbach, and Doris Maple, and we enjoyed having them. I believe that visitor Joyce was a winner two or

three times playing bingo. On the business side, yours truly read the minutes which were approved, and Bessie Ellsworth, in the absence of Pauline Morbitzer, gave an update on finances for the month. We missed those who were unable to attend for a variety of reasons. Helen Kubala fell, has been in the hospital, and is now residing at the Avalon Care Center on Boat Club Road in Lake Worth. Marie Keller was having surgery that day, and Kenneth Krivanek is doing better. Pauline and Don Morbitzer were traveling in Europe, and Mary Ann Gibson and Glenn were in the Washington, DC, area visiting their daughter and sister. A bit of gossip that I heard was there was a member who is very young-at-heart but overslept and missed the meeting (smile). You all will have to wonder who that was. I also received a call after the meeting asking us to remember Jim Horner, Linda’s husband, as he recuperates from surgery. Other news to pass on is that Evelyn Scaff is still having tests and her health issues remain a mystery. Mary Ann Kozel’s Shingles are a bit better, and Kitty Rippen is going to have another surgery on one of her eyes. Our prayers for healing and safe travel go out to everyone. Shirley Martin gave us a brief synopsis of a recent bus trip that she and her husband, Victor, and Betty and Stanley Krenek took to New Orleans. Especially interesting was their tour of a World War II museum. She stated if anyone is ever in New Orleans that you should visit the exhibit. Unfinished business was the development of a Ladies Circle recipe book. It was determined that we should cancel our project since the SPJST Home Office is compiling one. Also, St. Thomas Catholic Church’s Friendship Club is producing a book as well and between the two of them that would be too much competition for us. Members were encouraged to send in their favorite recipes to the Home Office for inclusion into the “big” book instead. Evelyn Scaff announced that the Ladies Circle has been asked to handle the cake walk for Heritage Day on September 17. She made a motion to do so, and it was seconded by Doris Overstreet. A chairman for this activity will be selected at a later date. On a side note, be sure to place the Heritage Day celebration date on your calendars. It was also announced that we should remember to bring items each month for St. Thomas’ Food Pantry,

student activities throughout the years. She was the UIL Director for 10 years the junior in high/middle school. This included hosting the UIL competition for several years. She also coached UIL events. Brenda sponsored PAL - Peer Assistance Leadership for middle school students to mentor elementary students. She was the junior high cheerleading and Student Council sponsor. She also sponsored concessions for junior high track meets and basketball tournaments. The funds from this were used to buy appliances for the junior high, a couch for the lounge, and water fountains for the school. Brenda points out that one of her greatest accomplishments was co-authoring a book with her friend and fellow junior high teacher Nancy Cooper. The book entitled “Forward Through the Past: A History of Rogers, Texas” was compiled and published with the assistance of Rogers Middle School Eagle Historians, a group that Brenda also sponsored.

Mrs. Williams with former students/current teachers Cindy (Gloria) Smith, left, and Kim (Clowers) Kennedy.
2009-2011 Rogers Homecoming President Brian Vanicek, also of Lodge 24, Cyclone and SPJST Supreme Lodge President, expressed that Mrs. Williams was a big help in compiling information for the 2009 Rogers Homecoming. “She was a real asset and had a wealth of material on the history of Rogers,” he says. “Mrs. Williams brought so much substance to the celebration newspaper.” Through her 38 years of service, she has received several honors. Most recently, she was recognized with The Bell Award in 2011. She received the 2010-2011 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award; 2006-2007 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States - National
Citizenship Education Award; 20062007 VFW Texas Middle School Teacher of the Year - VFW Post 10377; 2004 Golden Apple Award from Temple Daily Telegram; and 2001 Daughters of the Republic of Texas Outstanding Seventh Grade Texas History Teacher - District Five. Brenda says she has truly enjoyed her time at Rogers. “Since it is a small school, you get to really know your students and share in their joys as well as sometimes not-so-happy occasions. I’ve had a chance to be a part of their lives.” Mrs. Williams believes in her students and in building good character in them. Those are traits that she has instilled through generations of students. “It makes me proud when former students see me in the community and tell me how well they are doing,” she remarks.
Mrs. Williams taught former Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club member/current RISD teacher Misti (Gotcher) Jecmenek and daughter Jessica.
“I have had the good fortune to teach with fellow teachers who I now call my dearest friends,” she states. “They have been with me through some great times as well as sad times.” At her retirement celebration, her peers recognized her as being steadfast and standing beside them 100 percent of the time. Another fellow teacher stated that Mrs. Williams would see something special in her students and she believed in them. Another peer commented that Mrs. Williams made students feel important, loved, and special. A former student of Mrs. Williams’ and current middle school teacher re-

marked that Mrs. Williams helped her through her junior high years as a student, and she stated that it was an honor to work with her as a fellow teacher. News of Mrs. Williams’ retirement touched several SPJST Home Office employees and former students of Mrs. Williams’. “She was one of my favorite teachers,” SPJST Executive Assistant Cynthia (Bravenec) Hutka states. “As a matter of fact, I liked her so much in junior high that I was a teacher’s aide for her during my senior year of high school.” Mrs. Williams taught at least two generations of students. SPJST Executive Assistant Lisa (Coots) Kirby remarked, “What a privilege to have had a wonderful teacher who taught not only myself in junior high but also two of my children.” Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy (Baker) Martinez remembers how petite in size Mrs. Williams was compared to the growing teenage boys in class. “The boys seemed to pick on her about her height, but she was always such a good sport about it!” Brenda grew up in her family with five brothers. She and husband Elmer “Pud” have two children, son Jerry and daughter Donna, and two grandchildren, Nick, 16, and Phillip, 12. Brenda says she is looking forward to traveling and spending time with her grandsons. “I love to read, and now I will have time to do that,” she says. “And, we have a cruise to Alaska planned in the fall.” She will not be a stranger to Rogers ISD as she still plans to attend school sports and activities. Brenda leaves the obvious legacy of having touched hundreds —probably thousands— of lives over her 38-year career at Rogers ISD. But she leaves another legacy—one of good character and active citizenship embodied with her special spirit that made learning fun and enjoyable to each student who entered her classroom. Best wishes to Mrs. Williams in her retirement. —SPJST— Brenda and husband Pud are pictured at Olive Garden Italian Restaurant in Temple for a celebration honoring Brenda.

I hope that you had the chance to participate in Joins Hands Day on May 7. I know that there were a lot of great projects that our youth participated in. I had the chance to participate with the SPJST kick off of “Join Hands America!” May 5 to 7 with a public awareness campaign for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial at Shilo Inn in Killeen, Texas. The event was held in conjunction with national Join Hands Day on Saturday, May 7. The informative come-and-go information session took place from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. all three days. Central Texas area residents, businesses, civic and veterans groups were invited to visit with project organizers and learn more about the memorial. The weekend event also marked the introduction of the Join Hands America! website and toll free number (888) 836-9877. District Youth Achievement Days Our District Youth Achievement

I am being proactive in this matter and requesting that the camper’s shot record must be attached to the camp application. Youth leaders, please get this information out to your youth members’ parents so they have enough time to request a copy of their shot records from their school nurse. Thank you for your cooperation!

Poison Ivy
Approximately 85 percent of the population will develop an allergic reaction if exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Usually, people develop a sensitivity to poison ivy, oak or sumac only after several encounters with the plants, sometimes over many years. However, sensitivity may occur after only one exposure. The cause of the rash, blisters, and infamous itch is urushiol (pronounced oo-roo-shee-ohl), a chemical in the sap of poison ivy, oak and sumac plants. Approximately 500 people could itch from the amount of urushiol covering the head of a pin. Urushiol oil can stay active on any surface including dead plants for up to five years. The symptoms of poison ivy contact begin to appear between 12 and 36 hours after exposure. They include itchy, burning rash followed by small blisters and in severe cases, large blisters and swelling. All parts of the plant are toxic in all seasons. Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) Poison ivy can be a climbing or trailing vine, a shrub or even a small tree. The leaf edges can be smooth, toothed or deeply notched. New leaves are red in spring and dying leaves are yellow. Fall leaves are yellow, orange and red. The plant produces small, greenish-white clusters of flowers in spring and white, waxy, berry-like fruits in fall. Several variations of the old adage “Leaves of three, beware of thee” proclaim the warning- typical 3-leaf (occasionally 5-leaf) clusters on a single stem identify it. Burning leaves of poison ivy are particularly dangerous because the toxin is carried in the smoke and can cause serious respiratory damage if inhaled.
Poison Sumac (Toxicodendron) Poison sumac reacts very much like poison ivy, but it looks very different. It is also usually only found in very wet, wooded regions of Texas, typically in the east. It can be a tall shrub or small tree. The leaves are arranged in pairs of 3 to 6 with a single leaf at the terminal end of the stem. The fruits of the Poison Sumac are a whitish green hanging fruit. There are non-poisonous varieties of sumac, which appear similar, yet their fruits are red and upright. The same procedures should be followed as for poison ivy exposure.
Identifying the Plant
(Write “I” for Ivy or “S” for Sumac in the space)
_____ The plant produces small, greenish-white clusters of flowers in spring and white, waxy, berry-like fruits in fall. _____ The leaves are arranged in pairs of 3 to 6 with a single leaf at the end of the stem. _____ Is usually only found in very wet, wooded regions of Texas. _____ Typical 3-leaf (occasionally 5-leaf) clusters on a single stem. _____ It can be a tall shrub or small tree. _____ Burning leaves are particularly dangerous because the toxin is carried in the smoke and can cause serious respiratory damage if inhaled. _____ This plant produces a whitish green hanging fruit. _____ There are non-poisonous varieties of this plant which appear similar yet their fruits are red and upright.
Quick Action Needed
Because urushiol can penetrate the skin within minutes, there's no time to waste if you know you've been exposed. "The earlier you cleanse the skin, the greater the chance that you can remove the urushiol before it gets attached to the skin," says Hon-Sum Ko, M.D., an allergist and immunologist with FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Cleansing may not stop the initial outbreak of the rash if more than 10 minutes has elapsed, but it can help prevent further spread. If you've been exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, if possible, stay outdoors until you complete the first two steps: First, cleanse exposed skin with generous amounts of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. (Don't return to the woods or yard the same day. Alcohol removes your skin's protection along with the urushiol and any new contact will cause the urushiol to penetrate twice as fast.) Second, wash skin with water. (Water temperature does not matter; if you're outside, it's likely only cold water will be available.) Third, take a regular shower with soap and warm water. Do not use soap before this point because "soap will tend to pick up some of the urushiol from the surface of the skin and move it around," says Epstein. Clothes, shoes, tools, and anything else that may have been in contact with the urushiol should be wiped off with alcohol and water. Be sure to wear gloves or otherwise cover your hands while doing this and then discard the hand covering.

If you are using the electronic version of the quarterly reports, a youth club roster of all youth who attended their meeting must now be scanned and emailed or mailed to the Youth Department by the grace period. The roster should be signed by each child at each meeting.

Youth Club Meetings Youth clubs should be encouraged to hold their meetings in a public place instead of a private home. Meeting should also be held the same date and time each month. Dear Readers, What a great district outing for District Two members! Ninety-one members met at Dell Diamond in Round Rock to cheer the Round Rock Express Baseball Team in a game against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Beautiful weather, some shade, what else could we have asked for—the score to have been in our favor. Round Rock Express, you played a good game, and we are proud of you. We all had a great time sitting together between home plate and third base. What awesome seats! Ask Chase Alexander of Seaton, and he will tell you he had the best seat in the whole ball park. tain. One loved the Shock Wave. But, they will all agree—they cannot wait until next time! Jennifer Davidson, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Learn about Dinosaurs
For my second grade field trip, I went to Dinosaur World. Then, we went to the state park and saw real dinosaur footprints. I spent the day with my two favorite SPJST friends and my mom. We saw a lot of really cool dinosaurs at Dinosaur World. We had a picnic lunch then had a chance to go to the gift store. I bought my dad a really cool dino tooth! It was huge.
At the end of the meeting, we discussed the trip to Six Flags. We will be going on Mother’s Day. We also talked about the camping trip that we have planned. We are going camping at Mother Neff State Park on May 28. And, the last thing we discussed was the District Two outing to Round Rock Express Baseball Game. We have a lot going on this month. More to come soon! Ryan Davidson, Reporter —SPJST—
Lodge 87, Temple youth enjoys family vacation
This last month, my family and I went on vacation. We went to the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, Texas. Our first day there, we played at the water park all day. They have everything there—huge water slides, a wave pool, and hot tubs—not to mention a big treehouse that has a water bucket that dumps over the whole place when it gets full. Later that night, we attended storytime in our pajamas by the big tree in the lobby. Characters come to life and sing and dance. It was fun to watch.
Once we got to the park, we walked across the rocks to the foot prints. My mom and Will’s mom Belinda stayed after everyone else had left back for school. They allowed us to swim in the river and to get up close and see the footprints. I had a blast! Thanks, Mom and Belinda, for making this the best field trip so far! Ryan Davidson —SPJST—
The next morning, we went on a nature hike through the main lobby and hotel. On the hike, we learned the names of the wolves of Great Wolf Lodge. In the afternoon, we played bingo in the cub cabin and won prizes.’ We ended the day in the water park again. My favorite part was the water slides. I was scared to ride them at first. But after my parents and my brother Wyatt rode with me, I got over my fears and rode them by myself. The trip was awesome, and I can’t wait to go back! Colton and Wyatt Ammons —SPJST—
Lodge 87, Temple youth celebrates 8th birthday
This year, I turned eight years old on May 16. My younger brother Hayden turned four on May 15. We always have our birthday parties together, and this year we had a swimming party. It was awesome. We swam, ate pizza, and had some cake. My mom got me a rock star cake because I play guitar. My parents got me a new bike for my birthday. It’s red and silver and is awesome. I love it. Thanks, mom and dad! Colton Ammons —SPJST—

ally in Haná and in the villages around Brno. In South-East Moravia, it takes place in varying intensity and regularity in the area around Uherské Hradištì, Uherský Brod, Kyjov, and Strážnice. The Kings' Ride in the villages of South-East and Central Moravia has become a permanent part of modern cultural life. This is particularly the case in Vlčnov, a village lying between the towns of Uherské Hradištì and Uherský Brod. Here, the Kings' Ride has kept its continuity from time out of mind, yet adopts new elements. Apart from the procession of lads in national costumes on gaily decorated horses, there are numerous performances by folk groups, exhibitions and other cultural events.
The Kings' Ride takes place in Vlčnov regularly at the end of May. Similar in nature is the ceremony of the Kings' Ride in the nearby small town of Hluk; and in the village of Skoronice near Kyjov and in the Haná village of Doloplazy near Olomouc. The ceremonies of the Kings' Rides are examples of the use of the traditions of folk culture in present-day Czech Republic. They are an integral part of

the culture of the Czech nation, a living cultural heritage, and an important cultural factor.
The main participants in the King’s procession on horseback are the King and his aides, standard-bearers, heralds, collectors, and thankers. The king is a boy, age 10 to 12, dressed up in an old-fashioned woman’s folk costume, his hand/s proudly placed on his hip/s. His lips pressed together to firmly hold a rose; and thus, symbolize taciturnity. At his sides, two adjutants (pageboys) are on horseback and protect the king by holding unsheathed sabers in their hands.
Riding horses decorated with ribbons, the boys go around the town and chant witty verses to celebrate their king and ask for gifts on his behalf. The parade is led by an announcer (herald)

calling out the words of an ancient message. They often also make rhyming statements about outsiders watching the ceremony. For this "town crying" they are given presents which are taken by the collectors. In earlier times, these were boys who had been called up into the army, though, today, they are just ordinary young boys and men.
Each year, the Ride of the Kings is accompanied by several days of cultural events including performances by children and adult folklore ensembles, cymbal and brass band concerts, parade of traditional costumes, and a market with traditional crafts, and many others.

Several theories attempt to shed light upon the origin of the Ride of the Kings. The best known and most recent theory is associated with the Bohemian-Hungarian War. In 1469, The King of Bohemia, Jiří of Poděbrady, defeated his son-in-law, Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, who, in order not to be recognized and captured, dressed up in a female folk costume, covered his face with ribbons and headed for his residence in Trenčín guarded by his company, who had to collect money from serfs to feed him. This version of the Ride of the Kings Jízda králů - has been handed down for generations.
