Happy Father’s Day!
Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 19. Best wishes to all fathers for a
wonderful day!
Way to Go, Lodge 47! Lodge 47, Seaton hosted its annual picnic on Sunday, June 5, and it was a fun afternoon filled with friends and fraternalism. David and I enjoyed visiting with many people. This is an annual tradition in the Seaton community that has been going on for many, many years. I remember my parents taking me to the picnic when I was very young. It was a great time back then - just like it is now. Thanks, Lodge 47, Seaton, for continuing this wonderful tradition. And, a special thank you to everyone who worked to make the event happen. See pictures and an article in next week’s Vestnik.
Taylor Jungmann Drafted by Milwaukee Brewers Congratulations to SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone member Taylor Jungmann! He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers last week in the Major League Baseball First-Year This is threeyear-old John Findley Wiesner looking through a copy of the Vestnik. Thanks to John’s grandfather John A. Wiesner of Lodge 18, Elgin for sharing the adorable photo. Grandfather John says that John Findley will be four years old in July. “He cannot read yet, but he is really interested in it!”
Player Draft. Taylor, who is currently a pitcher in the playoffs for the University of Texas, was selected in the first round in the no. 12 over-all spot. What an accomplishment!
Collection Jars Available for Your Lodge or Business If you would like to place a jar in your lodge hall or business to collect funds for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial, please call the Fraternal Department (800) 7277578. The jars are now available at the Home Office. Thanks for the Recipes! If you have mailed, emailed, or submitted a recipe online for the new SPJST cookbook — thank you! We need more - lots more. Please keep them coming. And, don’t delay. Please submit your recipe today. We are planning to have cookbooks available for Christmas.
Coming in July . . . This year, July has five Fridays, five Saturdays, and five Sundays. This happens once every 823 years. —SPJST—

Member recommends Czech travel host
Dear Melanie, Recently I received a note from a dear friend in the Czech Republic. Years ago, when my daughter Kathleen Prachyl and I were taking tour groups to Europe and the Czech Republic, a young lady by the name of Hana Kasalova was our guide. She wrote that she would really like to offer her services to groups from America, and especially groups from Texas as they are much closer to the Czech people than the other groups she has been working with. From my experience, I would recommend Hana to any travel agency looking for someone who is very good at her trade, speaks very good English, will show you exactly what you wish to see, and then go further and take you places most tour groups do not see but will be of interest. I would also recommend Hana to families who wish to make up their own tour group and have ancestral information but need help researching villages and towns and house numbers when they travel over. My daughter and I met with Hana three years ago while in Prague, and she spent the day with us suggesting sites in Prague we previously had not seen, and she took us to a “out of the way restaurant” for lunch, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit with her. I am enclosing Hana Kasalova’s email address (xykas@seznam.cz) should anyone reading this letter be interested in contacting her. Remember, she is fluent in English so that is not a problem. Please let her know you got her information from a letter in the Vestnik written to Editor Melanie Zavodny by Elaine Gallagher. Thank you, Elaine Gallagher Lodge 25, Ennis —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone reports on April, May meetings
Dear Readers, The April meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone was held on Monday evening, April 11, 2011. Present were eight members and one child. All reports were given and approved. Under old business, Daniel reported that the dance we had scheduled for July 16 has been cancelled. The Red Ravens were supposed to be here, but there was a conflict with their schedule. We apologize to all of you who had your calendar marked for that date. Of course, Daniel got right to work, and the Czechaholics are supposed to be here on October 1. So change that date from July to October, and plan to come join us for an enter-

Preventing Bullying and Cyber Bullying By Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
Bullying was once considered an unfortunate – but relatively harmless – schoolyard malady. Today, however, parents, educators and law enforcement officials are increasingly recognizing that bullying is anything but harmless. Young victims of bullying can suffer long-term consequences that haunt them long into adulthood. For the perpetrators, bullying can cross the line and become a criminal violation with lifelong consequences. A recent study by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids showed that nearly 60 percent of boys who were classified as bullies in sixth to ninth grade faced criminal prosecution and conviction of at least one crime by the age of 24. Of that same population, 40 percent had three or more criminal convictions. Bullies typically choose their victims based upon a particular vulnerability or a specific trait. Some simply choose victims randomly. For example, a bully may target a child because of the child’s height or academic successes. To intimidate their victims,
bullies rely upon a variety of harmful behaviors such as hitting, teasing, threatening, spreading rumors, damaging belongings and excluding others from social groups. In an increasingly electronic world, cyber bullies rely on technology to torment others. Cyber bullying occurs when teenagers use the Internet, cell phones or other devices to send or post texts or images that are intended to hurt or embarrass their victims. Put differently, cyber bullies may attempt to destroy or smear a victim’s reputation with emails, blogs, social media posts, text messages and other electronic media. Bullying situations often involve seemingly powerful aggressors and victims who feel helpless. Sadly, some students who suffer bullying at school may believe that violence is the only way to defend themselves – but it is not. Texas law allows bullied students’ parents to request that their children be transferred to another classroom or school. The law also requires that all schools display a student code of conduct that imposes disciplinary consequences for young bullies. Parents and students alike should be aware that some instances of cyber bullying can cross the line and become criminal conduct. Texas law defines criminal harassment as “sending repeated electronic communications in a

manner reasonably likely to harass, annoy, alarm, abuse, torment, embarrass, or offend another.” Texas teenagers who suffer from cyber bullying or harassment should save all communications from a bully and report those threatening or hurtful messages to a parent, teacher, law enforcement officer or other trusted adult. By working to prevent young Texans’ bullying, harassment and intimidation, adults can help protect young people and make our communities safer. Parents and teachers are often best poised to build a child’s self-confidence and teach the student how to peacefully resolve their problems. Parents and school personnel should always take bullying seriously so that children are not embarrassed or afraid to tell adults that they have been bullied. To help children deal with bullies, parents should work to bolster children’s self-assertiveness and self-esteem. They should also teach their children to solve problems without resorting to violence. Victims of bullying should be taught to immediately report the bully or cyber bully to an adult. Parents should also teach children that if they witness bullying, there are positive steps to end a potentially dangerous situation and help the victim. Witnesses must not watch or encourage the bully, since bullies typically desire an audience. Instead, witnesses and bystanders should go to the victim’s aid if it is safe to do so and report the incident to an adult. Parents who observe any bullying should take action to stop it right away – even if their own child is responsible for the bullying.
Thanks, John Engelke, of Lodge 66, Waco!
To ensure children and teenagers know how to safely resolve a bullying incident, parents and teachers should teach students to: • Report to an adult any type of bullying – including theft, physical attacks, online harassment, abusive text messages, etc.
• Protect themselves and others. Young Texans should follow rules and stay out of trouble, avoid gangs, walk to school with friends, and be aware of their surroundings. • Be cooperative and respectful. Conflict resolution exercises, parental involvement in school or summer activities, and spending time with family can help offer children opportunities to experience appropriate social interaction with their peers.
Lodge 66, Waco member John Engelke is pictured receiving his 50year SPJST membership pin from Lodge 66 Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz. Thank you, Brother John, for your membership in SPJST!
Together, parents, children, teachers and law enforcement authorities can help prevent bullying and cyber bullying, reduce crime and build a brighter future for all Texans. —SPJST—
Happy Fatherʼs Day
19
By Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
There’s no greater gift than becoming a father, but it isn’t always easy. Dads make countless sacrifices for their children, some larger than others, but all out of love. It is because of these sacrifices that a father holds a special place in his child’s heart. This Father’s Day, the employees of the Child Support Division (CSD) thank you for doing the right thing by taking care of your children and giving them the love and support they deserve. Last year, the CSD collected $2.9 billion in child support — and most of the money came from fathers. You are the unsung heroes in your children’s lives. The CSD demonstrates its commitment to fathers by recognizing the important and irreplaceable role they play in their children’s lives. Several notable resources that serve Texas fathers include: The Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) gives unmarried fathers the opportunity to acknowledge their children’s paternity at the time of birth. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) trains and certifies hospital and birthing center employees to assist parents with the Acknowledgement of Paternity process so that the child will have a legal father right from the start. Last year, POP gave more than 122,000 Texas children a good start in life by helping their fathers establish legal paternity. Maps for New Dads: Handbook for Expectant and New Fathers is a publi-

cation designed to help expecting dads transition into fatherhood. Maps covers everything from what to expect on a prenatal visit to making homes “baby safe” — all in a manner designed to reinforce the special role fathers play. Additional resources developed by the OAG include posters recognizing the important role fathers play, a Parenting Two-gether Handbook for New Parents and the For Our Children DVD. Access and Visitation programs promote noncustodial parents’ access to and visitation with their children, when appropriate, through a variety of shared parenting projects. Awarding grant funding to local organizations is one way the Attorney General’s Office can help children whose parents are engaged in custody or visitation disputes, since federal funding to run the child support program cannot be used to handle these issues. The services provided under this grant include early intervention, co-parenting education, mediation and enforcement. The OAG also funds a toll-free assistance hotline, (866) 292-4636, and provides a Web-based directory of services available in Texas communities. The Parenting and Paternity Awareness (p.a.p.a.) program is an innovative educational curriculum designed for secondary school students and young adults. The p.a.p.a. program focuses on the “rights, responsibilities and realities of parenting.” Key themes in the curriculum focus on the importance of father involvement, the value of paternity establishment, the legal realties of child support, the financial and emotional challenges of single parenting, the benefits of both parents being involved in a child’s life, healthy relationship skills and rela-

No Kidding educators use their experiences as teen/young parents to deliver a memorable message about paternity establishment, father involvement, the challenges of parenting and the benefits of postponing parenthood until economically stable and in a marital relationship. “We Didnʼt Have the Green Thing Back in My Day”
Editor’s Note: I received this thought-provoking email from Judy Majek of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. The author is unknown. Thanks, Judy, for sharing.
In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t have the green
thing back in my day.” The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment.” He was right—that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles, and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didn’t have the green thing back in that customer’s day. In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she was right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day. Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day. Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a hankerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to

send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then. They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn’t have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn’t have the green thing back then? —SPJST—

Daddyʼs Poem
Editor’s Note: Thanks to Mary Ann Kieschnick of Lodge 142, Houston for sharing this touching poem. Thanks to our servicemen and women and their families for the sacrifice they are making to keep our country free. Her hair was up in a pony tail, her favorite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy’s Day at school, and she couldn’t wait to go.
But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone.

But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates of why he wasn’t there today.
But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home.

Robert and Corina Cranfill Celebrate Silver Anniversary
But the little girl went to school eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees, a dad who never calls.
There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats. One by one the teacher called a student from the class. To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed.
At last, the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, a man who wasn’t there.
Lodge 84, Dallas Members Visit Family in Illinois
“Where’s her daddy at?” She heard a boy call out. “She probably doesn’t have one,” another student dared to shout.
And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say, “Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day.” The words did not offend her, as she smiled up at her Mom. And looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on.
And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique. My Daddy couldn’t be here, because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, since this is such a special day.

Frankie and Wilma visited with Millie’s sons and met Millie’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After a three-day visit, Millie’s son Bob drove them to brother Edwin’s gravesite at Jefferson Barracks Na-

With that, her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat, beneath her favorite dress. And from somewhere there in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years.
For she stood up for the love of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, doing what was a right.

And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud.
“I love my daddy very much, he’s my shining star. And if he could, he’d be here, but heaven’s just too far.
You see, he is an American Soldier and died just this past year When a roadside bomb hit his convoy and taught Americans to fear. But sometimes when I close my eyes, it’s like he never went away.” And then she closed her eyes, and saw him there that day. And to her mother’s amazement, she witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes.
Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside. Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side. “I know you’re with me Daddy,” to the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers, of those once filled with doubt.
Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.

A thought came to me on what to do today then oddly enough the thought went away
I could see it from a distance as it went over the hill the speed of that thought impresses me still
I tried hard to follow but the thought was too fast i couldn’t catch up with it ran out of gas
the thoughts I have lately all tend to stray and frankly at my age most thoughts get away. —SPJST—

Benefit From Good Advice By James L. Lee, III, CPA
In this time of corporate downsizing and restructuring, many people find themselves pursuing a new career with a new employer. Embarking on a new career should inspire a revision of your existing retirement plan including your future income, eventual age of retirement, and standard of living. In addition to this revision of future James L. Lee, III retirement considerations, don’t ignore your current employee benefits package. Employee benefits and “perks” can account for more than a third of the total compensation your new employer has to offer and should be an important consideration in a complete financial plan. It’s important to understand how to get the most benefit from the options available in your new position. Of course, working with the employee benefits people to gain a full grasp of all that is available is your best option. Here are a few tips to get the most out of this relationship and maximize your benefits. 1. Coordinate health benefits with your existing health coverage. Avoid duplicating coverage or you’ll end up paying for what you don’t need.
2. Contribute as much as you can to your company’s qualified retirement plan. If your employer offers matching funds, increase your saving enough to maximize that contribution. Tax-deferred buildup and matching contributions are two “perks” that are too good to pass up. 3. Review disability options. The chances of an employee becoming dis-
abled for an extended period of time and prevented from working are far greater than those of dying before 65. Many benefit plans offer good coverage that is much cheaper than that available from insurance companies. 4. Determine how much life insurance you need. If you have dependents, you may need to have additional life insurance outside the coverage provided in your benefits package.
5. Consider private life and disability insurance if you change jobs often. These benefits are transferable, so your coverage will continue and you won’t be exposed during career transition. 6. Find out about other benefit options your employer provides such as child care, paid vacations and holidays, extended leave policies, education reimbursement, and employee discount packages.
7. Review your benefits regularly and adjust your participation to changes in your family and life. Be sure they still meet your long-term concerns and goals. With the help of your financial planner, making well thought out choices about your employee benefits will make you enjoy your new career move and help you stay financially healthy.

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club Enjoys Round Rock Express
Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club attended the Round Rock Express Baseball game on May 22, 2011. This was a district outing, and all the kids had a blast reuniting with all the youth clubs. Upon entrance to the game, all the kids received a bat. This was a great souvenir for them to remember their time at the game. We all got to sit in some pretty awesome seats, and our view was excellent. Our seats were between third base and home, but we sat closer to home. All the kids enjoyed the game. The kids kept seeing the ball hit into the stands.
Some of my fellow youth members wanted to try to catch a fly ball with the gloves that they had won there. It was a really fun day. I spent the day “baking” in the sun with some amazing people. The kids all got together with Patsy and the Express dog, and took a picture. It was pretty cool to see all the kids who attended. Thank you, Patsy, for another fun outing. Lodge 87 cannot wait until the next time! Fraternally, Ryan Davidson —SPJST—

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club Camps at State Park
On May 28, 2011, Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club went camping at Mother Neff State Park in Moody, Texas. The youth met up at 2 p.m. and started to put camp together. The kids put the tents up, with some help from the parents. Once we had camp put together, Youth Leader Jennifer Davidson led the youth on a really long hike. We hiked around three miles and got to see a whole lot of interesting things. The first thing that we got to see was a tower. It’s really big, and it was a lot of fun to climb up the steps and look out over all the trees. The next thing that we hiked to see was the watering hole. This was where the Indians had carved out a huge hole in the rock, and this was where they took their baths. The last thing that we got to see was the caves where the Indians lived. We all really liked this. It was really cool to see the rocks that overhung the ground that made the cave. You can just imagine the Indians living there. We chilled here for a few before heading back to camp. Once we made it back to camp, Assistant Youth Leader Lucas Davidson cooked us some pretty tasty hot dogs. While we waited for the pit to get ready, he served us up some ice cold watermelon. Everyone enjoyed several pieces!
After everyone ate, we got the fire pit going. We all went in search of some sticks to use to make our s’mores. We really enjoyed melting our marshmallows and making s’mores. But the best part was eating them! Once the s’mores were gone, all the kids got around the fire and told their own scary stories. Everyone told one story. Some were really cool, and some were kinda scary! But the scariest one was from Luke. He told us about the Indians and their drums, and it was really scary. When it was time to go to bed, I heard a few people talking about the drums. We finished the night out by playing charades and telephone around the fire. The next day, we took the tents down and packed everything up. I don’t think one person went home without a smile on his or her face. And, every time a parent came to pick up another youth, you heard the Indian story come back to life. It was a blast camping out, and I can’t wait until next time! Fraternally, Ryan Davidson —SPJST—

The Massacre at Lidice
On June 10, 1942, the German government announced that it had destroyed the small village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, killing every adult male and some fifty-two women. All surviving women and children were then deported to concentration camps, or if found suitable to be “Germanized,” sent to the greater Reich. The Nazi’s then proudly proclaimed that the village of Lidice, it’s residents, and its very name, were now forever blotted from memory.
Pre-destruction view of Lidice, the barnyard in the foreground is the Horak farm where the men of the Lidice were shot down.
For centuries, Lidice was an ordinary agricultural village, which belonged to the Buštehrad manor, located in a shallow valley of the Lidice Creek in the Kladno district sone 20 km west of Prague. The village is today, a quiet town that lies adjacent to valleys and of meadows, with a few stone ruins of a farmhouse and church, and a striking bronze sculpture of children. This is the site of the original village, and what happened here on June 10th, 1942, shocked the entire world. After the Munich Agreement of September 1938, Hitler’s troops occupied the ethnic-German border regions of Bohemia and Moravia (the Sudetenland). Soon afterwards, Hungary received territory in southern Slovakia and Ruthenia. Czechoslovakia ceased to exist in March 1939, when Hitler occupied the rest of the Czech lands,

Reinhard Heydrich and Karl Hermann Frank.
The Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia had tragic consequences for Lidice. In order to suppress the growing anti-Fascist resistance movement, security police chief SS Obergruppenfuhrer - Reinherd Heydrich was appointed deputy Reichs-protektor in September 1941. During his short reign of terror, 5000 anti-Fascist fighters and their helpers were imprisoned. The courts working under martial law were kept busy and the Nazis even
had people summarily executed without a trial in order to spread fear throughout the country. So many people throughout the Sudetenland died on the scaffold from Heydrich’ s persecution, that he earned himself the nickname the “Hangman”. Edvard Beneš, the leader of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, together with František Moravec, head of Czechoslovak military intelligence, organized and coordinated a resistance network. Hácha, Prime Minister Eliáš, and the Czech resistance acknowledged Beneš’s leadership. Active collaboration between London and the Czechoslovak home front was maintained throughout the war years.

BROTHERHOOD
15.cerven.2011
The most significant act of resistance was the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich during a mission codenamed: Operation Anthropoid. Two Czech patriots, Jan Kubis and Joseph Gabcik, serving with the Polish forces in Britain, volunteered to be dropped by parachute near Prague. Their mission, to assassinate SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. The ambush took place on May 27, 1942, as Heydrich drove to his office. Severely wounded, he was rushed to Bulovka Hospital where he died eight days later. Soon after his death, the Nazi reprisals began when an enraged Hitler ordered Heydrich’s underling SS Gruppenführer Karl Hermann Frank to initiate mass executions of the Czech populace, but Frank persuaded him first to search for the assassins. The Germans raided 5,000 towns and villages arresting some 3,180 people, 1,344 were sentenced to be executed. This number, however, was far too small for Adolf Hitler who ordered severe reprisals threatening to kill 30,000 Czechs.
Members of the Schutzpolizei pose in front of the Horak family farm after its destruction.
Thankfully for many Czech civilians Hitler’s threat never materialized, however Karl Hermann Frank, now Secretary of State for the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, reported from Berlin that the Führer had commanded the following concerning any village implicated in the Heydrich assassination:

• All adult males were to be executed. • All woman to be immediately transported to concentration camps. • All children suitable for “Germanizing” were to be placed with SS families in the Reich and raised as Germans. • The village was to be destroyed and the areal leveled.
On the morning of June 9,1942 10 trucks filled with Security Police rolled into the small town of Lidice in the Kladno district. The sleepy town had been targeted because the Gestapo in Kladno had intercepted a letter belonging to a local family by the name of Horak, who had a son in the Czech army in Britain. This letter was labeled as “suspicious” and the ensuing action resulted.
Bodies of men massacred at Lidice.
All men of the village were rounded up and taken to the farmstead of the Horák family on the edge of the village. Mattresses were taken from neighboring houses where they were stood up against the wall of the Horáks’ barn. Shooting of the men commenced at about 7 a.m. At first the men shot in groups of five, but the SS commanders thought the executions were proceeding too slowly and ordered that 10 men be shot at a time. By 22.00 on the 9 June 1942, Gestapo agents from Prague were joined in Kladno by two companies of

police in battle-dress, and a squad of Security Police. The Security Police were under the command of SSHauptsturmfuhrer Max Rostock, who would carry out the executions. While the extermination squad dealt with the men, other gangs went round with cans of petrol firing the buildings. Later that evening, the Germans sealed off the village. By noon the next day, in an orchard, as John Bradley put it, ‘seventeen rows of corpses in bloody clothes, with shattered skulls, brains and guts spilling out, lay on the ground in batches of ten’. These were the 173 men of the village gunned down by a German death squad tanked up on alcohol. After them came engineers with charges to blow up the stillstanding walls, then pioneers with bulldozers who flattened the ruins, uprooted the fruittrees, and filled in the lake, they even diverted Post war photo the stream. On the 11 of Max Rostock. June 1942, trucks carrying 30 Jews from Theresienstadt transit ghetto arrived in Lidice and began the digging of a common grave for the men executed the day before. Ploughs were driven back and forth across the acres of rubble, so that no recognisable outline should remain, and when all was done, they put up a high barbed wire fence around the site with notices in Czech and German which read:
The women of Lidice were no more spared than the children of the village. A few were executed with the remaining men of Lidice in Prague on the night of the 16th of June. When the other women and the children were separated, nearly 200 women were transported to Ravensbruck; four of them, heavily pregnant, were allowed to give birth to children they would never see. After three brutal years of treatment, only a handful of the Lidice women returned home.

In the village the dead were left lying where they fell and the newly brought out soon-to-be victims had to first walk past them and stand in front of them. The firing squad always took two steps back and the scene of horror repeated itself. The men were not blindfolded and were taken to the place of execution without bonds. This spectacle continued until the afternoon hours when there were 173 dead bodies lying in the Horák farm orchard. The next day, another nineteen men who were working in a mine, along with seven women, were sent to Prague, where they were also shot. Eighty-eight Lidice children were transported by bus to Lovosice located in the area of the former textile factory in Gneisenaustreet of Lodz on June 13, 1942. Their arrival was announced by a telegram from Horst Boehme’s Prague office which ended as follows: “these children are only bringing what they wear. No special care is desirable”
“Anyone approaching this fence who does not halt when challenged will be shot.”

The children were not sufficiently fed and were forced to sleep on cold dirt floors without blankets, they covered themselves with their coats if they had any brought one with them. Under specific orders of the camp management, no medical care was given to the children. Shortly after their arrival in Lodz, officials from the Central Race and Settlement branch chose seven children at random to be “Germanized”. Adolf Eichmann then gave the order for the murder of the remaining children on July 1, 1942. On July 2, 1942 all of the remaining 81 Lidice children were handed over to the Lodz Gestapo office, who in turn had them transported to the extermination camp at Chelmo some 70 kilometers away where they were gassed to death in Magirus gas trucks. It is generally believed that they were killed on the day of their arrival. Out of the 105 Lidice children, 82 died in Chelmno, six died in the German Lebensborn orphanages and 17 returned back home. After the villagers had been either shot or deported, military police ransacked the homes once again and took anything of value. All farming tools were taken and cattle were herded up. Anything of the remotest value was taken. Description of the Massacre of Lidice as told in the Nuremberg Trials Friday, 22 February 1946:
The Village of Lidice is burned.
Lidice’s children were sent to families in Germany and elsewhere to be ‘Germanized’. Of 104, only 16 were ever traced. In the days that followed, Lidice was erased from the face of the

earth. Even its cemetery was desecrated; its 400 graves dug up. Jewish prisoners from the camp at Terezin were brought in to shift the rubble. New roads were built, and sheep set down to graze. No trace of the village remained. A small Czech village called Ležáky was also destroyed two weeks after Lidice. There, both men and women were shot, and children were sent to concentration camps or sent to the Reich to be “Germanized”.

The death toll resulting from the effort to avenge the death of Heydrich is estimated at 1,300. This count includes relatives of the partisans, their supporters, Czech elites suspected of disloyalty and random victims like those from Lidice. All that was left of Lidice was a great brown blotch of broken rubble, obscene and sterile amid the growing crops. The re-establishment of the village began soon after the liberation of Czechoslovakia in May 1945. On June 3, 1945 Red Army soldiers erected a monument at the grave of the men of Lidice. The place was later declared a national cultural memorial. Great American Train Trip • August 8 - 18, 2011 • San Antonio to Montreal Book by June 20

Memorial to the Children of Lidice.
The area also includes a statue of a woman mourning at the grave site and a statue of a mother with children located on the foundations of the original school. By the beginning of the 1950s, more than 100 homes were built not far from the original site. Its Rose Garden became symbolic of the continuity of life and was created with a donation of 29,000 rose bushes from 32 countries. See names of children from Lidice never seen again on pages 32 and 33 of this week’s Vestnik.
