Leaders-In-Training (LITs) and chaperones celebrate this year’s camp theme - Sailabration 2011 - with a dance and games party held Saturday, June 11 at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. A total of 78 of SPJST’s teen youth club members were trained to assist at camp and in their youth clubs during the weekend workshop held Friday, June 10 to Sunday, June 12.
Congratulations to Katelyn Daniel of Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club! She is the winner of the 2011 SPJST Czech Easter Egg Decorating (Kraslice) Contest. Katelyn receives a $100 gift card for her efforts. More on page 17.
Lodge 29, Taylor member “Cookie” Valla achieves the Grand Age of 96
SPJST congratulates Brother John “Cookie” Valla, a member of Lodge 29, Taylor, who celebrated his 96th birthday on June 6, 2011. As such, Brother Valla is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. John Valla was born on June 6, 1915, in Harmony, Texas, located midway between Caldwell and Frenstat in Burleson County. John’s parents, Joe and Vera Valla, immigrated to the United States in 1910 from Moravia with their three children, Joe Jr., Fannie, and Charlie. John and
sisters Rosie and Albina were born in America. Interesting to note: Most everyone who knows Brother Valla, knows him at “Cookie.” Cookie was the name given to him by sister Albina because John just loved cookies and would sneak in and grab a handful — while they were baking! The name stuck. To this day, John’s family, extended family, and circle of friends still know him as “Cookie.” “My daddy was a farmer in the Old Country,” John recalls. “Someone who had been to America brought back a

few bolls of cotton to show off. When daddy saw that, he wanted to go to America and grow cotton.” Upon arriving in America, the Valla family worked a farm in the Chriseman community, located between Caldwell and Milano. Growing up on the farm and during the Great Depression, John learned a lot about farming and how to become self-sufficient. “Cotton was five cents a pound, hogs were three cents a pound and you could buy a butcher calf for five dollars. Cheap — but not much money . . . I did just about everything you could to make a few dollars,” John says. One of the “best jobs” was getting a job

with his brother, Charlie, working to build Highway 36. “We earned 30 cents an hour, 10 hours a day, and six days a week.” An enterprising duo, Brother Charlie and John parlayed their musical talents, playing country music, polkas, and waltzes for house dances throughout the community. Charlie played guitar, and John played the fiddle. “We got paid real well — sometimes 50 cents; sometimes a dollar — split two ways.” John’s love of music extended to the dance floor. Dancing has been a favorite pastime for more than 80 years. He met his wife-to-be, a young school

YADs Begin This Sunday
Cars 2 will be in theaters this week on June 24. Cars was one of
my favorite movies, and I’m sure that Cars 2 will be just as great. I am looking forward to seeing McQueen, Mater, and the others and meeting Jeff Gorvette, too! If you are in the Temple area this Saturday, June 25, be sure to stop by the Temple Mall, located at 3111 South 31st Street, for a special meet and greet with Cars best buddies Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the food court near Macy’s. These lifesize replicas will be displayed at the mall for the next two weeks. They were built by Lodge 47, Seaton member Chaundra Mitchan’s father Burt “Grumpy” C u m mings. Chaundra says that her dad built them because he has eight grandchildren, and he wanted to do something fun. “He also wants to use them to bring happiness to children and take them to visit kids in hospitals, etc.,” she says. Chaundra and her family own Tex Blast Sandblasting in Temple, and the business was featured in the recent SPJST Member Services Directory. Yea, Lodge 87, Temple! Lodge 87, Temple welcomed a hall full of members and guests on Tuesday, June 14 for the lodge’s annual appreciation dinner. And, it was a great event. David and I enjoyed the social and the meal, catered by Lodge 87 member Thomas Mungia,
who owns Mungia’s Barbecue in Heidenheimer, Texas. Two circles of District Two Beseda Dancers performed for attendees. It was a special evening.
Teen Leaders Trained We also enjoyed visiting Cooper Farm on Saturday, June 11 for this year’s Leaders-in-Training Workshop. Hats off to State Youth Director Frank Horak and assistants Tammy Martinez and Amber Penn for all of their work in organizing and conducting the workshop. Great job!
Letʼs Support Our Youth District Youth Achievement Days kick off this Sunday, June 26 at Lodge 25, Ennis (District Three) and Lodge 88, Houston (District Five). If you are in these areas and have a free afternoon, please attend and cheer on our young people. They have worked hard to prepare arts, crafts, educational projects, talents, and royalty speeches. Encouraging and supporting these youth goes a long way. Thank you! And, to youth club members preparing and competing in this summer’s YADs — best wishes with all of your entries. Congratulations for participating. Whether you bring home the blue ribbon or not, you are a winner because you are taking the time to enter and continue SPJST’s youth traditions. See you at YAD!

Flag image observation
To Whom it May Concern, I am Erwin R. Olexa, wife Doris, and brother Henry. Children of Frances and Frank Olexa (too long ago), members of Lodge 88, Houston. I noticed the flag on the back and last page of the Vestnik is not correct. The flag should have seven red and six white stripes, starting with a red stripe and ending with a white stripe. I guess I just wanted to say hello to all you good people up there. Sincerely, Erwin Olexa Lodge 88, Houston

Dear Mr. Vanicek, My son Jacob Crotty was honored and blessed to receive the 2011 Denisse Wuensche Scholarship. For this, we are truly grateful. I am writing this to compliment you on your organization and staff; namely Sandra D. We received a letter last week informing us that the scholarship money has already been sent to Texas A&M for the fall semester. It is absolutely amazing how quickly this has been taken care of. You have an outstanding organization, and Sandra is truly an asset to SPJST. I had to call her a few times when we were filling out the application and getting information together, and she was such a pleasure to work with. Once again, thank you for selecting Jacob for this scholarship, and we

Sales Agents: “Add Win to Your Sales” with summer contest
Dear SPJST Sales Agents, Sailabration 2011 — this year’s SPJST membership campaign — is well underway. Thank you to all agents who have sent in applications in 2011! Summertime is here, and we are giving all sales agents a chance to win two exciting summer items in our special summer sales contest — “Add Win to Your Sales.” The contest began May 1 and will continue until July 27. Every agent who writes and sends in at least 10 applications during the contest dates will receive an SPJST Beach Package that includes a folding chair and a beach towel. Plus, agents will then be qualified to win one of three Visa gift cards in the amounts of $300, $200, and $100. Each application submitted will earn 10 points, and each dollar of annual premium will earn one point. The three agents with the highest points will win the gift cards. If you have any questions about this contest or anything else in the Insurance Department, please give me or your State Field Representative a call. If we have a good response with this contest, we will continue to do more contests. We need all sales agents to write applications. We must get new members in our lodges to keep the lodges growing. Also, do not forget to call your current members to make sure their insurance coverage is still adequate and up-todate. Thank you again for the applications that you send in. Keep them coming, happy selling, and happy summer! Fraternally, Gene McBride SL Vice President —SPJST—

teacher named Eleanora Drozda at an SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor dance. “I asked her if she wanted to dance. She said that she didn’t know how,” John recalls, smiling. “I asked her if I could teach her. She said yes and turned out to be the best polka dancer I had ever seen.” John and Eleanora Drozda were married in Taylor, Texas, on May 11, 1946. Looking for new opportunity, the young couple moved west to Slaton, Texas. Daughter Johna Graham shows her father a photograph of Valla Grocery in Slaton framed by two gravity-feed gas pumps. Standing in front are two men and a little girl cradling two dolls. John’s memory is keen as he recalls, “That’s me — that one on the left — and Robert Schneider out in front of our old store in Slaton. And, that little girl is Joan Schneider.” During John and Eleanora’s two years in Lubbock County, John ran a
general store, worked as a carpenter, and farmed. During their time in Slaton, a precious son, John Edward, was born. Because of his poor health, they moved back to Taylor where the youngster died at age two. Eleanora took care of home and family matters while John farmed and worked as a carpenter. “There wasn’t anything that Daddy couldn’t build,” daughter Johna attests. “If you needed a house, he could build it. If you needed a rabbit hutch, he could do that, too. “Mother and Daddy were active in the community,” she says. “I remember going to dances at the (SPJST) Taylor lodge hall and being active in events like the annual Mayfete.” The Valla family attended Taylor Brethren Church where John served as one of the church elders. Someone once said that the love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies. That statement applies in the Valla family and it dates back — at

least — to John’s mother, Vera, an avid gardner, who instilled a love of gardening in her son, John. Nurturing plants and the soil that they depend on has been a lifelong passion for Brother Valla. In addition to raising a bounty of traditional Texas garden vegetables — tomatoes, potatoes and squash, among them — John also raised tobacco, a crop not commonly associated with the Central Texas blacklands. Although John quit smoking in 1950, he always got a kick growing a few stalks of tobacco, curing it, and rolling a few cigars for friends — just the way his daddy did. John continues to maintain a small garden at the residence facility where he lives in Irving. “And that’s not all,” says Johna, “He made the best pork sausage and liver sausage you have ever eaten.” After “retiring,” John and Eleanora beefed up their weekly dance calendar, attending dances throughout the region several times a week. Eleanora died in 1991. In an effort to preserve memories of the past for future generations, Brother Valla has over the years donated many

antique artifacts — especially blacksmithing and farming tools — to the SPJST Museum collection which is now exhibited through the Czech Heritage Museum at the corner of Third Street and French Avenue in Temple. The beadboard wall covering which is used at various places in the museum came out of a farmhouse — the same house that the Vallas lived in when they moved back to Taylor in 1948 — located on one of the two Williamson County farms that John still owns. Today, Brother Valla lives in Irving, Texas. Nearby are his daughter Johna Graham, her husband Mike, their children and families. The family gathered at the Graham’s Irving home on Sunday, June 5 to celebrate John’s birthday and for the presentation of his Age 96 certificate by Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “SPJST appreciates Brother Valla’s longtime membership in SPJST. He’s got a great family, too,” says President Vanicek. “The generations know and respect each other. That’s such a blessing.” “My father is amazing for what he has done for himself and all he has accomplished with a simple seventh grade education. His wisdom is greater than some who have degrees,” says Johna. “I’m very proud of him.” —SPJST—

Dear Members and Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton officers and members would like to thank those of you who made Star Hall’s Picnic/Tractor Pull on June 5, 2011, so much fun, along with the good time of fellowship. To those of you who spent countless hours preparing for this big day, we appreciate your hard work. Many worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to make this event possible. The delicious food prepared, cold drinks, the band, the auction, the bingo, the raffle, the booths, the horseshoes, the youth beseda dancers, donations, the set-up and clean-up, your participation in all areas, was a part of that big word—“Teamwork!” There was a great attendance of friends and members who all seemed to enjoy the day. We appreciate you joining us, and we hope you enjoyed your day with us. We would love to have you join us at our monthly meetings and get involved. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. (The date has been changed due to the Fourth of July weekend.) Again, we thank all for your support. Changing Jobs? Don’t Let Your 401(k) Slip Away. By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Today’s job market is more transitory than ever. And, as more and more individuals switch jobs, they begin to wonder what they should do with the money they have accumulated in their employersponsored retirement plans such as their 401(k) plans. The good news for 401(k) James L. Lee, III plan participants is that your retirement plan assets are very portable so you may be able to keep your existing 401(k) plan assets in a tax-deferred environment. The trick is to resist the urge to use the monies. After tucking money away in your 401(k) for quite some time, you may be tempted to use it to treat yourself to a new car or some other indulgence. Because it could literally take years to replace your existing 401(k) funds, you should think carefully before prematurely taking money from your retirement savings. A hasty withdrawal decision by someone under age 55 could easily wipe out a third of your 401(k) assets. If you decide you want a lump-sum withdrawal paid directly to you, the 401(k) plan trustee must withhold 20 percent for federal income tax and, if you do not attain age 55 prior to the end of the year in which you separate from service, the trustee must also withhold an additional 10 percent premature distribution penalty. So you will receive a net payout of 70 to 80 percent of your existing 401(k) plan account balance. After age 55, however, the premature distribution penalty
is no longer imposed if your withdrawal is prompted by your separation from service with the employer sponsoring the plan. Of course, if you choose to take a withdrawal, you may, within 60 days of the distribution, subsequently decide to deposit it into an IRA as a qualified rollover. However, for the withdrawal and re-contribution to be a tax neutral event, you would need to deposit the gross distribution amount into the IRA, which means you need to replace the withheld monies with funds from another resource such as your personal savings. If you can resist the urge to take a withdrawal when you change jobs, you are one step closer to making a distribution decision that will preserve your hard-earned money. To be in the best position to make an informed decision, you should consider other options available for your existing 401(k) assets, such as: • leave your assets in the 401(k) plan, • transfer your assets to a new employer’s 401(k) or retirement plan, or • roll your assets into an IRA.
Leaving your assets in the 401(k) plan may not be your best option. It depends on your existing 401(k) plan’s provisions. Some plans have limited investment options for employees who have separated from service and some have restrictive distribution options. However, most plans do allow employees who separate from service to roll their 401(k) assets to a new employer’s 401(k) plan, or retirement plan, or to roll to an IRA. Transferring your existing 401(k)
assets to a new employer’s plan may be an option. To do so, you must first meet the eligibility requirements of your new employer’s plan. Additionally, the trustee on the new plan must agree to accept your assets, which may be a concern, especially if your existing 401(k) assets include shares of employer stock. Information on other considerations involved in transferring your existing 401(k) assets to your new employer’s 401(k) plan is available from your new employer. A direct transfer to an IRA avoids the mandatory withholding of the 20 percent for income tax and the 10 percent for the premature distribution penalty, if applicable. Your 401(k) plan trustee may simply transfer your plan assets electronically or may cut a check payable to your IRA. Once in your IRA, the assets continue to accumulate tax-deferred. One of the more attractive aspects to rolling your existing 401(k) into an IRA is your control feature. Not only do you have more control over your investment options; but, you will also have more control over the timing and manner of your distributions. Your 401(k) plan account balance represents your savings; therefore, it is important to make informed distribution decisions that will preserve your hard-earned money. To learn more about the portability of your 401(k) assets, or for more information on preserving your 401(k) assets and 401(k) retirement planning strategies based on your particular situation, please contact a Financial Advisor for a complimentary consultation.

Dear Members, I would like to share a letter that our youth club received:
Dear Mrs. Teplicek, I wanted to thank the members of your organization and its youth group for the help they provided our VFW Post and its Ladies Auxiliary to put out the United States Flags on the graves of veterans in our Rowena cemeteries over the Memorial Day weekend. This could not have been accomplished without that very excellent assistance. Perhaps just as important as it was to recognize all our deceased area veterans for their service to our Nation, was the opportunity to instill in our youth the importance of service to our Flag and to the people who fought for it. This was a valuable lesson of patriotism, service, and community commitment to the youth who helped put out the flags. We appreciate all that your group did to make this Memorial Day a celebration of service to our veterans. All of us veterans appreciate your contributions to make this day special. We look forward to working with you doing this same thing next year. Lodge 87, Temple youth graduates from kindergarten
On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, I graduated from kindergarten at Moody ISD. I am so excited about going to first grade because of all the cool things my teacher Ms. Asbridge said I would be learning next year. I had a lot of fun this year. I made a bunch of new friends, got to play on

the playground, and learned how to read. I was excited about starting school this year because I got to ride the bus with my older brother Colton. I am ready for this summer though because I want to sleep late and swim all day. I can’t wait until we go to Corpus for vacation with SPJST. My mom said because I did so well in school this year, she is taking me to Six Flags. I love that place! The best thing about going into first grade is I get to see all my friends again. But, I will miss my teacher Ms. Asbridge. She is my best friend, and I love her. Wyatt Ammons —SPJST—

On May 4, 1945, General George S. Patton gave the order to resume the offensive in West Bohemia. The 2nd and 97th Infantry Divisions and the 16th Armored Division pushed forward in the direction of Plzeň. American tanks appeared on the streets of the city from 8 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, May 6, 1945 to be greeted with immense enthusiasm by local inhabitants as World War II came to a close.
On Sunday, May 6, 1945, the end of World War II came to the city of Plzeň in what is now the Czech Republic. American soldiers from the 2d

Cavalry Group, Third Army, under the command of General George S. Patton, were the first to reach south-western Bohemia, and they decisively participated in the liberation of Plzeň itself, early on the morning of the 6th. In addition, Plzeň was freed from Communist rule in 1989, and has since then educated their citizens on the circumstances of their liberation, which were kept from them during Communist rule. Thus, Plzeň and its citizens celebrate freedom because of these two landmark events. Since 1990, the city of Plzeň which is also the home of the famous Czech beer Pilsner Urquell - has organized the annual Liberation Festival which takes place in May and has become a local tradition. The event pays homeage to American soldiers from the United States Army who came to Plzeň, fought and defeated the Nazis on the last days of World War II, May 5 to 6, 1945. Every year in May, Plzeň celebrates its liberation by the Americans with a festival. The actual public holiday for Liberation Day falls on the 8th, which is the anniversary of the German surrender to the Red Army. During the communist years, it was celebrated on

the 9th because the document was signed in Germany late at night on the 8th May 1945, when it was already early on the 9th in Moscow. The Plzeň Liberation Festival features dozens of different activities. The memorial ceremonies and wreathlayings, tours of significant locations, and the chance to meet with visiting American veterans are quiet and respectful affairs, but included are outdoor concerts, battle reenactments, and street parades of historic military vehicles. The Liberation Festival has been attended by many American and Allied veterans. People have traveled to Plzeň from all over the world to welcome to meet American veterans and their friends and relatives, and to welcome in the spring with music and dance and, of course, to enjoy pivo Pilsner Urquell. http://www.liberationfestival.com/

Historical Battle display
At the May 2011 Plzeň Liberation Festival, one of the high points of the military program was an historical battle display that has always been especially popular with visitors over the past years. Directed by the 2nd Infantry Division Plzeň club, the huge field battle entitled “Infernal Cauldron” was at U Ježíška. The battle between the armored vehicles and troops - which is not a reenactment of an actual event, but a precisely orchestrated work of “historical fiction” - included US Halftracks, M20s or famous M8 Grey-
hounds go to battle. On the German side, SdKfz 250 and SdKfz 221, Mercedes machine guns, and many other weapons and machinery made an appearance. In terms of the number of American vehicles on the field, this year’s battle was the largest not only in the history of Plzeň, but the entire Czech Republic!
