SPJST congratulates Sister Ruth Mechell Krizan, a member of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, who celebrated her 96th birthday on May 25, 2011. As such, Sister Krizan is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Today, the farming communities that lay east of Interstate 35 in southern Hill and northern McLennan Counties in the vicinity of West are fairly quiet. But a century ago, places like Tours, Abbott, Penelope, and Ross were bustling with the sights and sounds of many small farms and big families. It was just north of here — near the Liberty Grove community — that Ruth Mechell Krizan was born on May 25, 1915, to Jan and Aloise (Hrabal) Mechell. Ruth’s arrival was preceded by the birth of Julia, Ed, Zophie, Christine, and John and followed by the arrival of Emil. All are gone now except for Ruth. According to Ruth, just about everyone in the community raised cotton and corn, had big gardens, fruit trees, livestock, and chickens to provide food for their families year round. Root cellars were good for keeping things like potatoes, apples, turnips, and other produce good through the winter. Canning was also a big thing for preserving vegetables and meats. As the youngest daughter, Ruth was excused from much of the field work that needed to

be done on the Mechell farm. Instead, she worked close beside her mother in the kitchen and tended to chores around the house. In addition to raising livestock and chickens, Ruth’s brothers hunted squirrels, rabbits, and other small game. They also caught plenty of fish in the nearby creeks. Because of these wild food resources and their own ability to raise a variety of produce and livestock, the Mechell family didn’t feel the Great Depression quite so badly as those who lived in the cities. Even if there wasn’t much cash to go around, one thing that was in plentiful supply was music which was fortunate for Ruth as one of her favorite pastimes growing up was going to the community dances. It was in fact while attending one of these dances in the town of Ross, that a young farmer named John Rudolph Krizan from Cottonwood asked Ruth to dance. “I didn’t know the boy,” Ruth recalls. “I didn’t want to turn him down and make him feel bad so we danced.” One dance led to another and before long, Ruth and John became an inseparable couple. The two were married in October 1938 and took up farming in the area. A son, John “Johnnie” Rudolph, Jr., was born to Ruth and John in 1947. Four years later, in 1951,

10 Years - 3 Days 500 Vestniks
Texas Czech Genealogical Soci-
ety (TCGS) volunteers arrived on Tuesday, July 12 to begin an absolutely amazing project—scanning about 60 years of Vestniks. Special thanks to Charlene and Leroy Hurta, Merlene and Anton Bravenec, and Ed Hlavaty for their work last week, dedication, and love of SPJST, Czech heritage, and genealogy. These people are wonderful. From the moment they arrived at the beginning of the day until the moment they left, they were working hard. I am so impressed. I have a very special place in my heart for volunteers, and I cannot thank these volunteers enough. They are opening a whole new world to SPJST, TCGS, and personal family research and history. These volunteers have scanned 10 years of Vestniks in just three days. That is 500 Vestniks - or more than 8,000 pages! After scanning, the Vestniks will be placed in an online searchable database for research and genealogy. Stay tuned for more details about this exciting partnership and adventure! And, in honor of the Vestnik’s 100th anniversary in 2012, we will soon begin publishing a few articles from these past Vestniks. State Youth Achievement Day Saturday, August 6 State Youth Director Frank Horak and staff are busy making plans for this year’s State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) set for Saturday, August 6 at the Frank W. Member expresses gratitude
Dear SPJST, Thank you so much for choosing me as a recipient of the SPJST Leadership Grant. Throughout the years of my involvement, I have learned so many things about my heritage and life through the wonderful people I have met throughout the state. I would definitely be different without my years in SPJST. This scholarship will help me so much to achieve my college education at Texas A&M. Also, I would like to thank Lodge 47, Seaton for the scholarship dinner at the June meeting. Again, thank you, everyone, for the years of support. Sincerely, Neil Rabroker Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton member Neil Rabroker visits France, Czech Republic
Recently Neil Rabroker and his grandmother Merlene Bravenec traveled to Paris, France, and Prague, Czech Republic. While in Prague, Neil met with relatives of his grandfather, Anton Bravenec, who took him to a concert in a village south of Prague. He also met students from the Foreign Language Institute, who were from Russia, Ukraine, Croatia, and Austria. Neil visited and enjoyed the main sights of Prague, but his favorite was touring the Technological Museum, where they had an architectural floor, an astronomical floor, and a transportation floor, which included a train engine and a couple of cars, various Czech cars, and old motorcycles and bicycles. This museum has been restored in the past 10 years. Also, the last day there, Neil had lunch with and visited with relatives from Westphalia, Texas, who were also traveling in Europe. It was a fantastic trip and he looks forward to more travels throughout his life. Neil is a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. —SPJST—

they had a daughter, Jeanette. It was shortly after Jeanette was born that Ruth and John began taking an active role in the affairs of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Interesting to note, it was John’s grandfather, Josef Krizan, who was one of the charter members of the Cottonwood lodge. Lodge 6 enjoyed tremendous growth under the leadership of John Krizan as president and Ruth Krizan as youth leader. Daughter Jeanette Krizan Beseda has fond recollections of those days. “My father, mother, brother, and I participated in all of the activities of the lodge at that time. They and other lodge members worked very hard to make the lodge active. There were floats for parades, special dances for Halloween, Valentine’s, and other special occasions, district meetings, annual picnics, and youth activity days with the main event being the queen’s contest during the evening.” Jeanette continues, “In later years after the hall was enlarged, I remember all of the fun activities as a youth club member and finally having our own youth club room for meetings. My mother was the youth club leader then and on every special occasion — Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas — the youth club members would memorize poems and skits for programs for the lodge members.” Brother Johnnie Krizan acknowledges that his family relished their active participation in affairs of the Society. “We were always on the go

with family trips and vacations, too, but a lot of our good times revolved around the lodge and SPJST.” When John died suddenly in 1964, Ruth picked up the slack in a determined and resolute fashion. In addition to running the household, Ruth took on the chore of running the farm — and eventually purchasing another in Penelope. “Mom did what needed to be done. I remember working side-byside with Mom out in the field picking cotton, chopping weeds, and whatever else needed to be done,” says Johnnie.
Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek presents Ruth her Age 96 Certificate.
“Mom was very resourceful. No doubt about that,” Johnnie reminisced. “I took a lot of pride in the shirts that she made for me out of the empty feed sacks when I was growing up.” Ruth worked hard to give her children opportunities she didn’t have and was extremely proud to see both earn their college degrees. The family also maintained an active presence in the local lodge with Ruth taking on the added responsibility of becoming an SPJST sales representative and is today responsible for multiple generations of families being members of SPJST. An auto accident in 1977 resulted in months of intensive care and convalescence for Ruth. In time, she rebounded and picked up with her lodge work right where she had left off. She continues to support the lodge in its various activities and events and remains a regular worker at the lodge’s sausage and sauerkraut booth at Westfest. “We’re just doing what needs to be done,” says Ruth, in her soft-spoken yet still determined voice. “We’re going to just do all we can.” Today, Sister Krizan lives with her son Johnnie in West. In her letter of thanks, Ruth wrote, “I will never forget the cruise trip and all the other entertainment plus seeing interesting places . . . my mind and thoughts are still as if it were a dream. Thanks again for all the enjoyment which I will never forget.”
Members of the Krizan family gathered at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on Saturday, July 2 for their annual family reunion, taking the opportunity to host the presentation of Ruth’s “Age 96 Certificate.” Lodge 6, Cottonwood officers and other well-wishers were also in attendance. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek made the presentation, acknowledging the longtime contributions of Sister Krizan and the Krizan family to SPJST. “It’s fitting that we are having this celebration in Cottonwood today,” he said. “On July 1, SPJST observed its 114th anniversary. Lodge 6, Cottonwood is one of SPJST’s 25 charter lodges. The Krizan family was active then and they’re still going strong here today — thanks in large part to you, Ruth. Thank you for your many years of devoted service and support. You are very special to us.” —SPJST—

A fROTHy Deferral Decision: Roth, 401(k) or Traditional 401(k) By James L. Lee, III, CPA
When 401(k) enrollment time rolls around, many eligible 401(k) participants must decide among the traditional pre-tax 401(k) salary deferral, the new after-tax Roth 401(k) salary deferral, and, perhaps, splitting their salary deferrals among the James L. Lee, III two, for example, 50 percent designated as pre-tax and 50 percent designated as after-tax. Let’s take a quick look at some of the basic information required to be able to make a knowledgeable decision. The Roth 401(k) builds on the Roth IRA concept. So, that seems to be the appropriate starting place for our discussion. The Roth IRA after-tax contribution limit for 2011 is $5,000, plus a catch-up contribution of $1,000 for those who have attained age 50 or higher. What makes the Roth IRA so attractive is that there are NO Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and Qualified Distributions of contributions and earnings thereon are tax-free. However, the Roth IRA is not available to everyone. For 2011, the ability to make an after-tax Roth IRA contribution is restricted to those whose AGI exceeds $107,000 for single filers and $169,000 for married filers. Fortunately, for high wage earners, this Roth IRA income restriction does not apply to 401(k) plans. Eligible traditional 401(k) plan participants may make a 2011 salary deferral of up to $16,500, plus a catch-up contribution of $5,500 for those who have attained age 50 or higher. An advantage to the traditional 401(k) plan is that salary deferral is on a pre-tax basis, which means it is not included in taxable income for the year in which it is deferred. The downside to the traditional 401(k) is that once a participant attains age 70 1⁄2, RMDs must be taken and distributions are subject to ordinary income tax. A Roth 401(k) plan sidesteps the Roth IRA restriction on income and
combines the attractions of the Roth IRA with the higher salary deferral limits of the traditional 401(k). Regardless of income, eligible Roth 401(k) participants may make a full Roth 401(k) salary deferral of up to $16,500, plus the $5,500 catch-up contribution. The Roth 401(k) is still a 401(k) plan, however, so RMDs must begin at age 70 1⁄2. This, because it is anticipated, may be incorporated into financial plans and the salary deferral decision at hand. A large number of factors come into play in deciding whether to make a traditional 401(k) contribution, a Roth 401(k) contribution or, if permissible, a combination of the two. Tax considerations will have a major impact on the decision. For example, the value of the current benefit to a pre-tax traditional 401(k) salary deferral must be weighed against the future recovery of tax-free earnings with the Roth 401(k) salary deferral. Proper examination of the tax savings factor alone requires financial analysis incorporating modeling tools which also take into consideration expected earnings rates, length of time before distributions will begin, and the anticipated size and frequency of distributions. Investors agree: saving for retirement is important. As more and different types of retirement savings accounts become available, selecting the most appropriate savings vehicle becomes more complex. If you would like to know more about the Roth 401(k), the traditional 401(k), the Roth IRA, or retirement savings in general, contact your financial advisor. After all, the harder your money works for you now, the more secure you are likely to be upon retirement.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, JUDGE WILLIAM M. HATTEN. Judge William M. Hatten, born August 26, 1913, in Houston, Texas, to George Renard Hatten and Josephine Yeager Hatten, passed away June 16, 2011. Visitation was held on Monday, June 20 at Heights Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 6 p.m. by the Sacred Heart Soci- William Hatten ety and at 7 p.m. by All Saints Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. A mass of Christian burial was held at All Saints Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 21 at 10:30 a.m. with interment following at Houston National Cemetery. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Bill Hatten lived his last months of his life on Earth the way he lived his whole life: “holding court” to family and friends. We said goodbye as individuals at his bedside and in large gatherings of good natured roasting. When asked what he wanted in his obituary, he simply said, “Just say thank you to everyone.” “Everyone” includes the priests of St. Thomas High School who instilled in him goodness, discipline, and knowledge. He was forever grateful and for that reason requested that donations be made to the school so that other young boys have the same opportunity. Thank you to the ethnic First Ward neighborhood where he grew up and learned that a man is valued for his honest labor and where he met the love of his life and wife of 74 years, Dorothy Helen Puls. Thank you to the United States Marine Corps for allowing him to serve and protect the country that he loved. Thank you to his friends in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, the Knights of Columbus, and the Sacred Heart Society, fellowships whose good works help so many and whose friendships were lifelong. Thank you to All Saints Catholic Church, where for over 70 years his soul was fed with the word of God.

Thank you to his brethren in the legal profession; his passion for the law and politics never waned. Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and care givers who in the latter years of his life fulfilled his wish to live and die with dignity. Thank you to his family whom he always stood by and loved wholeheartedly. There are special friends who meant so much to Bill and you know in your hearts who you are. The Hatten family certainly knows who you are. They are each and every one of you who touched our lives. The last words Dad spoke before he passed were, “I have been blessed.” We know the first words he heard from his final Judge in Heaven echoed this sentiment. Bill was preceded in death by brother George; and sisters Jesse and Clara. In Memory of William Vrana
William Vrana passed away July 8, 2011. Bill was born on a farm near Moravia in Lavaca County, Texas, to parents Emil and Albina Peter Vrana on June 22, 1914. In 1924, his father purchased a cotton gin at Moravia and an 80-acre farm. Bill worked on the farm and in the cotton gin from early childhood to the age of 20, an experience which reinforced his natural aptitude for William Vrana and understanding of machinery. He attended public school at Moravia and graduated from Schulenberg High School. He entered the University of Texas in September 1935, graduating in August 1939 with a degree in geology. Right after graduation, he accepted a job with the International Boundary Commission in El Paso as a junior draftsman. A year later, he went to work for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Houston as an assistant draftsman

and was promoted in 1942 to chief draftsman. In May 1942, he met Joyce Raasch, who came to work for the Engineers as a clerk and stenographer, and they were married on September 28, 1942. In 1944, he volunteered for enlistment in the United States Army and was assigned to the Army Signal Corps where he attained the rank of technical sergeant and served in various capacities until his discharge in May 1946. In 1946, he went to work for Tennessee Gas Transmission Company as a geologist in their fledgling Geological Department in Houston. In January 1954, he was sent to Corpus Christi as District Geologist to set up a new exploration office. After heading the Corpus office for seven years, he resigned from Tenneco to enter self-employment as a consulting geologist. He worked with several independent oil and gas operators in the Corpus Christi area until he retired in 1995. In 1972, he became interested in genealogy, and worked on the family histories of both his own and Joyce’s families, producing works which were donated to various heritage centers and libraries around the state. He was interested throughout his life in machinery and building and engaged himself over the years in a wide variety of construction projects around the house. Mr. Vrana was a member of SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia. He is survived by wife Joyce; sons Larry and Randy (Julie) Vrana; brother Eddie Vrana; and sisters Ollie Pospisil and Millie Berger. He was predeceased by his parents Emil Vrana and Albina Peter Vrana; brothers Julius and Emil Vrana; and sister Martha Hanslik. There will be a private interment. SPJST—

and enjoyed the company of the 55+ Group. She was an active 66-year member of the Catholic Daughters, belonged to KJZT, KJT, and Ladies Auxiliary-Knights of Columbus. She volunteered at her church library, loved making truffles at NAM and donated much time to the Catholic Daughters. Passionate in baking, she made cakes for her children’s weddings with husband Ben and daughter Diana, besides kolaches and strudels. She enjoyed piecing and cross-stitching quilts to give all her grandchildren. Mom sang in Jones Hall with the Czech Heritage Society Singers. Mom’s eyes lit up and ears perked up when someone mentioned “games.” Any card game, domino game, EUKR, board games or puzzles were fair game to her. She was a homemaker through the birth of her eighth child then ran a paper route with baby daughter cradled in the floorboard. With all the kids in school, she went to work at the Art Department-Star Engraving then on to Foley’s in the china department. Besides having a thumb in the flour bowl, she had a green thumb, savoring the fruits of her garden which she then enjoyed canning those fruits and giving them away. She was a strongwilled woman with the Janak family hard-headedness. Our mom was an honorable person who walked with God on a daily basis, who was unselfish, compassionate, and always had a positive outlook on life. Margaret was preceded in death by parents August and Agnes Janak; husband Bernard J. Roeder, Sr.; siblings Annie and Joe Najvar, Julia and Milo Gillar, Agnes and Ed Gerlich, Irene Hruzek, Paul and Mary Janak, Melvin and Sybil Janak, and Monsignor Hubert Janak; sister- in-law Victoria and Buck Janak; and brother-in-law Leo J. In the top of the first inning, they were winning, 3 to 0. We batted and scored two runs so the score was 3 to 2. Then, they batted in three runs so the score was 6 to 2. Unique ways to save on school supplies
When it comes to school, costs are rising across the board. Though tuition hikes get most of the publicity, additional expenses associated with school can add up as well, and school supplies are no exception. Though it was once easy to send kids off to school with a pencil case, a couple of notebooks and a few other accessories, today’s students live in a digital world, and their teachers often rely on technology to supplement lesson plans. As a result, the cost of
school supplies is higher than ever before, and parents are left looking for ways to give kids the tools they need without breaking the bank. To do just that, consider the following tips. • Sign up for coupons on retailer Web sites. When consumers purchase a product online, prior to finalizing the purchase many online retailers ask consumers to check a box if they would like to receive email newsletters and coupons. Parents who sign up for such newsletters and coupons can save substantial amounts of money and might even be privy to special sales not available to the general public. In some cases, it’s not even necessary to make a purchase to receive the newsletters and coupons. Shoppers simply visit the Web site of their favorite online retailers and sign up to be notified of any deals or sales. • Coordinate with teachers ahead of time. Parents should consult their child’s teacher before school begins and throughout the year to determine if there are any special projects or reports coming up that require certain supplies. For instance, kids might need costly

graphing calculators next semester. If parents are given advance notice, they can shop around to get the best deal. Talk to local school officials to see if it’s possible to make a list of school supplies available at the end of the year instead of at the very beginning. If so, this gives parents several months to shop around for the best deals. • Do your own homework. Parents of college-bound kids might think an e-reader would make the ideal gift, saving kids the trouble of lugging all those books around campus. However, parents should do their homework be-
Page 18
fore making any such purchases. That’s because not all textbooks are available as e-books, and kids might end up having to buy hard copies of their textbooks anyway. Before kids head off to college, examine their first semester schedule and then look online for each class’ corresponding syllabus. If most of their required textbooks are available as e-books, then an e-reader might make a great gift. If not, think of something else. • Don’t make the bottom line the determining factor. Whether a student is in grade school, high school or col-
lege, his or her school supplies tend to undergo more than their fair share of wear and tear. So parents looking to save on school supplies should consider that when shopping. Though the less expensive backpack might seem more affordable, make sure it can withstand the test of time and all the wear and tear that comes with being a student’s backpack. If not, it will likely need to be replaced before the school year is out, which can end up costing more money in the long run. • Recycle school supplies. School supplies can be recycled. At the end of

each semester or school year, perform an inventory of existing school supplies. If last semester’s notebooks were hardly used, there’s no need to buy new ones for the new semester. Similarly, parents who have a couple of students in their household can embrace hand-me-down school supplies just like they do with clothes. If one child finishes the school year but didn’t quite use up all of their supplies, save those supplies for the day when their younger siblings end up in the same class. —SPJST—

CCMH welcomes Czech guests
Czech Center Museum Houston’s Annual Fun Fundraising Gala is September 10, 2011. We are seeking underwriter donors and table underwriters with or without guests. We are soliciting silent or live auction items and inviting family, friends, and co-workers. This annual gala is a huge part of our funding. The Czech Center Museum Houston was privileged and honored to host a historical signing and visit of His Excellency Karel Schwarzenberg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Czech Republic in Prague. It was really a good day for Houston, for Texas, and the USA as two events took place. The first began in Comenius Library in Pilsen Hall with signing of a collaborative nuclear energy research effort between Texas A&M University officials and Czech nuclear scientists representing five universities in Prague, Pilsen, and Brno. The newly appointed United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic Norman Eisen, and newly appointed Czech Ambassador to the United States Petr Gandalovic, Texas Czech Honorary Consul General Raymond Snokhous, and Louisiana Czech Honorary Consul General Ken Zezulka, besides numerous business

people and glasses of champagne, sealed this important moment for posterity and hopefully all good results for the future. The second event proceeding from Pilsen Hall, the group joined a reception in Brno Gallery for butler passed pure Texas hors d’oeuvres, wine, and piano music by geophysicist Herman Vacca, while the Minister toured every room including the Honor Memorial Wall Courtyard, even interested in how our beautiful pink roses upfront were propagated from the time of my tiny 17-year-old immigrant grandmother, who brought a cutting of her family rose from her Czech land via Galveston in the 1800s. Mr. Minister entered the reception with great energy trying not to miss one personal handshake. You would think he was a Texan! On to Prague Hall with “Fanfare for a Prince” performed by Board Member Robert Dvorak and wife Donna. (He truly is Prince Karel of Schwarzenberg!) Following the reception, an elegant dinner of southwest-south Texas cuisine including the wines was served. There was beautiful music, harp, piano, and vocalists Robert Ermis and Christiana Gentry dressed in kroj. There was great camaraderie, every table including Mr. Schwarzenberg’s chatting with Roy and Mary Cullen, Hugh and Ann Roff, the Minister’s Chief of Staff, Katerina Weissova, the Rosenes, Cora Sue and Harry Mach and Jack Loftis, all having a good time. Mr. Snokhous and Louisiana counterpart Mr. Ken Zezulka did the same with their new Ambassador tables. It was a great blend of Houstonians and friends from abroad! An email from the Czech Embassy stated, “The Minister greatly enjoyed the evening and was overwhelmed by the hospitality, touring extensively the Museum and touched by the collections you have there.” Effie M.
