Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

Why the Name “Vestnik?”

We received a letter last week from Lydia Hermes of Lodge 63,

Sweet Home. She writes, “I am wondering what the letters Vestnik mean in English. I’m a longtime member of SPJST. My uncles August Kacir and George Kacir were members.” Thanks to Lydia for her note. This is a question that I have been asked many times. I have always said that it means “herald” or “bulletin” because that’s what I was taught as an SPJST youth club member. Last week, members of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) who have been scanning and digitizing past issues of the Vestnik came across an article entitled “Why The Name ‘Vestnik?’” in the March 9, 1949. One of the paragraphs in the article states, “The fraternal paper Vestnik which literally means ‘herald,’ or ‘announcer of glad tidings,’ has its place in the Americanization of persons with the European background. Democracy was born of longing human hearts for benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood, and this little unpretentious paper has contributed in the slow and subtle process of cultivating the right concepts of democracy.” The Vestnik will be 100 years old in 2012. To celebrate this grand occasion, we have partnered with TCGS to scan all available past Vestniks. Approximately 25 years have been scanned by these TCGS hardworkers! Wow! These past Vestniks will soon be available for everyone to view online. Stay tuned for more details. Czech Voice of Cleveland Joe Kocab, past president of Czech Catholic Union Fraternal Life Insurance Society, shared several authentic Czech recipes with us for the new SPJST cookbook. Joe also in-

vites all Vestnik readers to tune into “Czech Voice of Cleveland” that is simulcast at www.whkwradio.com (click “listen”) on Sundays from 2:03 to 4 p.m. CST. The show airs on WHKW on AM dial 1220 in Cleveland, Ohio, and on AM dial 1440 in Warren, Ohio. Joe also sent us “What is a Czech?” that was featured in a program from the 87th Annual Celebration of the Feast of St. Wenceslaus held in Cleveland in September 2010. What is a Czech? By George Jelinek

He’s everything happy in the world with a smile on his face. He’s everything fine in the world with a song in his heart. He is a Czech. He is hope with a laugh on his lips. He’s tomorrow with a twinkle in his eye. He is quick to forgive. His eyes dance at the sight of a pretty girl. His feet tap to a pretty tune. His heart sobs at sorrow.

A Czech carries a bit of his homeland with him wherever he goes - wherever he stands that bit of ground is a little bit of Cechy.

He has filtered out from his homeland and carried the secret of happy laughter the length and breadth of the world! He has fought other people’s wars, tamed other people’s seas.

But wherever he has settled, he inoculated his neighbors with his quick laugh and happy heart, and his spirit with a fine capacity of enjoying life. —SPJST—

So remember, ladies, to wear a hat to our August meeting. Calcutta was won by Nell Stautberg, Dixie Raskin, Willie Mae Pechacek (two times), and Evelyn Zajicek. on the sick list. Joe Kozel is still in the hospital and has been in for over a month. Both Jo and Mary Ann were missed. Alene Kercho was missed as her husband Al also had a recent visit to the hospital. Monalee Hattendorf was absent as she was to have her fifth leg surgery. She called me yesterday to say that it was postponed and her surgery would be on July 20. None of the ladies at Tracy Horn’s usual table were in attendance. I do know Tracy had a doctor’s appointment, but I hope Ella, Ann, Elsie, Wilma, and Marilyn are all well and happy. Anna Johnson said that it was too hot to get out, and Rosie Steinman is still having leg problems. I believe that she overdid it at the National Polka Festival in Ennis. Get well wishes go out to all. We wish you a speedy and complete recovery and look forward to seeing you soon. Camille Bolcer called to say that it would be too difficult to manage getting food with a walker, but she is definitely coming to the next meeting. Lydia had a little show and tell. She showed off the plaque and certificate that she received at Sokol Southern District Slet which was held in Fort Worth. The Slet was dedicated to Lydia and Frankie Milan as the longest tenure members of Sokol Fort Worth each being 65-year members. Lydia is now 91 while Frankie is 89 years young. News Betty Landsfeld certainly enjoyed the week’s visit with her cousin Mildred Liska Koehn from Houston. I lucked out, too. I called and stopped in for a visit with Betty, and it was so nice to get to see Mildred. We are all originally from Ennis so we had lots to talk about. My sympathy goes out to my friends Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger of Dallas on the death of their daughter Susan. She fought a long courageous battle with cancer. May her soul rest in peace. Tracy Horn certainly enjoyed the Luza-Matous reunion in Bryan. She especially enjoyed seeing her cousin Frances Matous Novotny from Corsicana and cousin Frank Matous from College Station. Both had not attended this annual reunion in a long time. Helen Skrasek, Debbie Skrasek, Pauline Morbitzer, and I enjoyed attending Artisan Theater with Lydia Alholm and the Wellington group to see Anne of Green Gables. It was very good and sad at times. Lydia continues to make her monthly trips to WinStar and to Debbie, bring pictures of your first grandbaby. Isn’t that what grandparents are supposed to do? Sister Lil Kosarek and I along with friends Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger enjoyed attending the Texas Czech Genealogical conference in Caldwell recently. They always have such a good program, and it is always so nice to see old friends.

Lodge 255, Katy joined Joe Joe Bear Foundation and the Christian Business Fellowship Association for their quarterly blood and bear drive. The event was a great success as the lodge helped donate 96 units of blood to go to an eight-month-old baby who just finished his second heart surgery. In addition, the drive raised enough money to purchase

126 bears for children with life-threatening illnesses. Lodge 255 invites other lodges to help make this an even bigger success in September. If you are interested, please contact Delisle Doherty (832) 232-2049. Submitted by, Delisle Doherty —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton Hosts 19th Annual Barbecue Cook-Off Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, 2011 • SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall

SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall 19th Annual Barbecue Cook-Off was held Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, 2011. The fun began on Friday night with the youth club cooking some delicious hamburgers. There were plenty of favorite refreshments available as well. Entertainment was furnished by our very own favorite Justin Psencik.

New attractions were added this year. On Friday night, a Margarita contest was held, and on Saturday, a Bloody Mary contest. Everyone seemed to have a good time. The weather was nice and hot. But late that evening, a cool breeze came and made things very nice. The nice breeze brought a smell of barbecue smoke which made you feel that

there will be something good to eat. We want to thank all the cookers and judges who participated. They are the ones who make the cook-off a success. We had 50 teams to compete this year. A lot of prizes were awarded to first, second, and third place winners. A raffle for a very nice gas grill was held. Everyone who saw it

wanted it. We look forward to next year’s competition. It’s always fun to work the cook-off where you meet new friends and see friends from other years. Fraternally, Dolores Skrabanek Sales Agent —SPJST—

Here are some activities that are planned: swimming, high/low ropes course, boating, tubing at the lake, trampoline at pond, paddle boats, kayaking, fishing (camp will have the gear), BB gun range, rifle range, games, dancing, karaoke, Janet’s Famous Scavenger Hunt, and so much more! An “Aloha Party” is also planned. Bring your costume and join in on the fun! Sunday, July 31 at 10 a.m. We ask that you please arrive no earlier to pick up your child due to scheduled activities up to that time. The youth enjoyed boating, tubing, high ropes, archery, riflery, swimming, crafts, hayride, special games, dancing, and skits. Thanks to everyone that helped make camp a fun and memorable event. Our annual picnic was Sunday, July 17. The youth provided bingo, 50/50, and a raffle. I want to thank all of the youth and parents for coming out to help set up the games, work with the youth, and help clean up. Hope to see everyone there, and good luck. Our next fundraiser will be selling kolaches at Westfest. We will be cooking the sausage on Friday, August 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, August 20, we will bake the kolaches. Be there at 7:30 a.m. Everyone’s help is needed. Hope to see you there. Scenes from Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club’s July Meeting

Dear Readers, On July 17, 2011, Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club all met up at our youth leader’s house. President Vanessa started the meeting, led the youth in the Pledge of Allegiance (flag was forgotten so a flag shoe was used—fast thinking of one parent!), the youth motto, and a moment of silence. Youth Leader Jennifer Davidson called the roll. All the youth did the Vestnik project together. Youth Leader Jennifer will randomly pick a youth to read a paragraph, then a new youth for the next paragraph. The older youth help the younger youth with the questions at the end. We went over the results of District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD). Congratulations to all the participants and winners. Lodge 87 did really well this year. After each member was recognized for a job well done, we started

thinking about next year. This earned a lot of groans from parents and youth. Youth Leader Jennifer went over upcoming fundraisers. We went over Corpus Christi and made plans on what we were going to do. Last, we discussed camp. At the end of the meeting, all the youth went outside to swim. After swimming, we all enjoyed drinks and brownies. Ryan Davidson, Reporter —SPJST—

And, I will still be sending letters to the Vestnik and contributing as much as I can to keep my Czech heritage alive. My grandparents have been members for as long as I can remember, and I know how much my grandmother always hung on to everything my mother had to report whenever we came back from the hall. I miss my grandmother, but I know she is watching from above guiding me to make the right choices. I know my sister reported on the spaghetti dinner fundraiser, but she did not mention the Annual Princess Ball Dance on August 20. Be sure and mark your calendars to come and dance to the music of Czech and Then Some. There will be more details in the Vestnik as the date gets closer because a good time is always had by everyone! Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth: Busy Summer

I’ve had a busy summer so far and it all started off with a quite exciting thing . . . I got to meet the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. His name is Karl Schwarzenberg. An interesting thing about him is that he is also a prince which also means he lives in a castle. Anyway, I met him at The Milan Gallery for a reception just for him. I got to go up in front of everybody, the Prime Minister, his delegation of 40 people, my family, a lot of people I didn’t even know, and the Fort Worth Mayor and his wife to read a speech in Czech. I was really nervous when it came time to read it, and I don’t really speak Czech, so I made myself a cheat sheet to where the words looked like they’re pronounced. My sister and I handed out little gift bags with good ol’ Texas things to his whole delegation as they walked out the door. The next event that I went to on my busy schedule was District Three Youth Achievement Day. I am one of the District Three Flag Bearers so at the beginning of the day, I carried the

flag down the middle of the seats to the front of the stage and mount it. Next, the other flag bearer and I went up onto the stage. He led the Pledge of Allegiance, and I led the youth club motto. Later on, at the end of the day, we found that of five categories I entered, I got first in three of them. I would say that was a pretty good day. Now last, but certainly not least . . . camp! I drove down to camp with my mom, sister, and two cousins Klair and Mady. We all got settled in and started activities right away. The lake was really fun. I missed the banana tube, but I had a blast on the other tubes. I have two new bruises to prove it, too. My favorite thing though was the high ropes course. I did every thing there I could do. I loved it. On all of them when I got to the top, I looked down and got scared and nervous for about three seconds. Well, overall, my packed summer has been great so far. Volunteer opportunities abound for todayʼs teens

VӖSTNÍK

When attempting to gain acceptance to the college of their choice, teenagers quickly learn the admission requirements extend beyond their report cards. Colleges weigh academics considerably, but many institutions of higher learning also want wellrounded students who will make great additions to the community as well as the classroom. One of the things admissions boards look for in an applicant is his or her track record of volunteering. Though students likely won’t be denied admission if they have never volunteered, it never hurts to have volunteer work on a resume, and some students have even earned scholarship money thanks to their record of service. Parents who want to help their child find the right volunteer opportunity should consider the child’s hobbies and interests. Oftentimes, a child’s favorite hobby matches up perfectly with a volunteer opportunity. When such a match is made, teenagers tend to look forward to their volunteer work and might even find a career path they'd like to follow. The Athlete Students who love sports are likely to discover a host of volunteer opportunities at their disposal. The Special Olympics (www.specialolympics.org) is a rewarding volunteer opportunity for adults and children alike. Relying heavily on volunteers, the Special Olympics needs volunteers to fill positions that include athlete escort, scorekeeper, cheerleader, and even fans. Events occur 365 days a year, ensuring there is a local opportunity for every teen regardless of how hectic his or her schedule might be.

The Traveler Teenagers who love to travel can combine that passion with their desire to help the less fortunate. Many programs are designed for families who want to go on service-oriented vacations. For example, when signing up for such a program, a volunteer might visit a less fortunate country and help build and renovate existing structures. Global Citizens Network (www.globalcitizens.org) is one of many such programs, and families will work side-

by-side with fellow volunteers as well members of the local community they're helping. Younger volunteers often find service-oriented vacations especially eye-opening, providing a different perspective of the world they might otherwise never be able to witness or understand.

The Teacher Teenagers who enjoy teaching others might find a local coaching opportunity suits them best. Coaching doesn’t have to be limited to sports, though grade-school aged children often look up to the local high school athletes and genuinely appreciate

when such athletes take the time to work with them personally. Additional teaching-based volunteer opportunities include the local music program for the musically inclined teen or reading to younger kids through the local library’s reading program.

Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club Attends Express Game

The meeting was called to order on June 26, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. Kyle Brinkman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the motto. There were 10 members, six adults, and one guest. At the meeting Ms. Susan talked about camp and Youth Achievement Day. The district will be going to Schlitterbahn on July 28. Our next meeting will be on July 10 at the

Caldwell Pool. We ended our meeting with door prizes. We then went to Round Rock to watch an Express baseball game. We all had a blast. The final score was Round Rock Express: 14; Oklahoma City: 2. Makenzie Mendez —SPJST—

The Builder Some teenagers are naturally inclined to building, and they might even be off to engineering school once they earn their high school diplomas. Before applying to the school of their choice, teenagers with a more mechanical inclination might find a volunteering opportunity such as Habitat for Humanity(R) (www.habitat.org) is the perfect fit. No previous building experience is required, and volunteers both young and old often find their time erecting homes for the less fortunate among the most rewarding moments of their lives. When attempting to find the right volunteering opportunity for their child, parents should consider their kids’ favorite hobbies and then find a volunteering opportunity that enables them to combine that passion with their desire to help others.
