Filing the Forties
Using a custom method, Edwin Hlavaty of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor files the binding off a booklet of 1940s Vestniks to prepare them to be scanned last week at the SPJST Home Office. Members of Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) have volunteered hundreds of hours over the past three weeks scanning all available Vestniks for digital archiving. Several years of early Vestniks are missing, including all years from 1912 to 1932, July to December 1948, and September to December 1973. See page 2 for more information.

VӖSTNÍK
Best Wishes, SPJST Youth!
Congratulations to all SPJST Youth Club members who are par-
ticipating in this Saturday’s State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Each and every youth who walks through the Mayborn Center doors on Saturday morning is a winner—whether they leave at the end of the day with the blue ribbon, bronze medal, or no award at all. Participating, trying, and giving your best effort is the gold medal. Sure, taking home first place is quite an honor and accomplishment. But, something that is even more important is the experience that you gain just by participating. Winning first place is a great feeling. But, winning second or third or not even placing gives you life experience— something that will help in high school and college and especially in a career. It certainly helped me. In competition and life, the only thing you can control is yourself. The basic element is effort. You can’t really set a goal to win. All you can do is try because there are so many factors out of a competitor’s control like skill of another entrant and judge’s preference. So the goal should be to give each performance your very best effort because that is all you can do. If you focus on the process of participating, you will be a winner no matter who goes home with the first place award. The bottom line is to have fun, participate and compete with your heart and a positive attitude, and try your best because that’s what champions do! Best wishes to all our youth, and thanks to the parents and families for supporting them. See page 20 and the back page for more information about State YAD.
Youth Spectacular to Feature YADs and Camps The Vestnik will once again publish the Youth Spectacular on October 7. This 64-page issue will feature results and photos from State YAD and seven District YADs along with photos and articles from district camps held throughout the summer.
SPJST Welcomes Donie Strickland SPJST welcomed Donie Strickland as State Field Representative for District Seven last week. Donie is a member of Lodge 169, Brenham where he serves as president. He can be reached at (979) 820-8879 or email don.j.strickland@gmail.com.
Missing Vestniks The Vestnik scanning project is progressing very well. We are needing all Vestniks dated 1932 and earlier, Vestniks dated July 1948 to December 1948, and Vestniks dated September 1973 to December 1973. If you or someone you know has any of these Vestniks, please call or email me. We would like to borrow these to scan them in as a part of our permanent digital archives. As of this writing, these amazing Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) angels, under the leadership of President Charlene Hurta, have scanned almost 40 years of Vestniks. That is about 2,000 issues. I am simply overwhelmed by their generosity and dedication to make this dream of digitally archiving the Vestniks come true. To celebrate the Vestnik’s 100th anniversary in 2012, these issues will be available for online access. I know you will be amazed with these Vestniks from yesteryear. Thank you, TCGS! —SPJST—

SPJST State Bowling Tournament Mark your calendar now for the first SPJST State Bowling Tournament. This event will be held at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas, on September 17. Registration and sign in will begin at 10:30 a.m. Lane assignments will be made at time of check-in. A
youth division has been added to this tournament. There will be a pee wee division ages 6 to 12, junior division ages 13 to 15, and adult division ages 16 and up. Registration is limited to the first 100 bowlers. Any registrations coming in after this will be placed on a waiting list in the event of cancellation. Registration will be accepted the day of the tournament from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. provided lanes are available. Early registration is encouraged so that we can get the team roster to the bowling center the week prior to the event. Teams will consist of five person teams (five men, five women, or a mixture of men and women). As all other SPJST state tournaments, this tournament will be open to non-members as well as members. The registration fee will be $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. All proceeds from this tournament will be split among SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC), Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, and Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. Entry forms and flyers are available from local lodge presidents and fraternal activities coordinators, online at www.spjst.org in the fraternal section, or by contacting Tammy at the Home Office. Following the last game bowled, handicap will be calculated by computer, and awards will be presented to the top three males and top three females for high series and high game. An award will also be awarded to the winning lodge. The lodge with the highest average will be declared the winner. A minimum of five bowlers from a lodge must compete in order for a lodge to be considered for the lodge award. With the calculation of handicap, all bowlers will have an equal opportunity to win an award, so you do not have to be a good bowler to compete. Any questions about the tournament should be directed to SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke1@aol.com. If you do not bowl, please come out for the fellowship, cheer on your favorite teams, and check out the items in the silent auction. Thanks to SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville; Lodge 202, Jourdanton; Lodge 258, Seguin; Bob Bayer Family; Glen Pruski Family; Larry Bertrand Family; Valerie Barta and sons Stephen and Walter; Brian Vanicek Family; and
District Seven for their donations toward this event. We are now seeking donations for the silent auction which will be held the day of the tournament. Donations are being solicited from all lodges in the state and/or individuals. Please email or call me to let me know what item(s) you are bringing so that we can have silent auction sheets made up prior to arrival the day of the tournament. These items may be brought to Fiesta Bowling Center on the date of the tournament. If you are not able to make it to the tournament and would like to donate an item, please contact me and I will be happy to arrange a time and date to pick up the item.

President Williams stated that the restoration project is at a standstill right now with the drought and economy like it is at this time. We are hoping better days are ahead. In new business, we have an outside step that has gone bad and a door that is not working properly that will have to be repaired or replaced. President Williams commented on the electric bills being so high right now with the bad heat wave that Texas is experiencing. It doesn’t leave much profit from the rentals. We are all looking forward to cooler temperatures in the fall. The meeting was adjourned with Kathleen Jurca making the motion and Hilda Burtis seconding. Motion carried. Door prizes were drawn. We want to thank Marguerite Burtis-Vogel for her nice donation of gifts for door prizes. We appreciate them so much. President Williams gave the cooks a break this month and treated us with pizza which was enjoyed very much by all.
Next Meeting—August 8 The next meeting will be on August 8 at 5 p.m. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Patsy was here to discuss YAD which was held at Lodge 24 on Saturday, July 9. It turned out to be a pretty good day. I was working in the kitchen and didn’t get to see much of what was going on, but I know there were pretty crafts displayed and great talents presented. Jason Hoelscher gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report in the absence of his wife Shirley. Shirley gets an excused absence due to the birth of their beautiful little boy, Joseph. One of the main things coming up is the summer trip to Corpus Christi. I’m sure everyone that usually has the opportunity to go to this event is getting excited and looking forward to this trip. State YAD will be Saturday, August 6. And, there is still time to get recipes sent in for the new cookbook. We had no birthdays for the month of June, and Daniel and Linda Wilde celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on June 25. We wish them many more years of happiness. I would like to apologize, again, for my letters to the Vestnik being so late.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth: July Meeting Scenes
Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on July 14, 2011. Ann Clagett, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Prachyl, and I arrived at 9 a.m. We arranged tables for the elephant sale and for show-and-tell. We also arranged table and chairs for seating for visiting and lunch. As everyone arrived, they displayed their sale items and show-and-tell items. We had to add more tables as we had so many items to sell. I have to say, this was the best-ever sale. Thank you everyone for bringing and buying the items. As they say - your junk is someone else’s treasure. It really went well. We had fun looking and buying. There were very few items left. Again, thank you all. After the sale, President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. There were so many wonderful dishes, you would have thought it was Thanksgiving or Christmas. We even had chicken and dressing that was so good - thanks to Ann Clagett. Thank you to all who helped clean up - Libbie, Ann, Victoria, Sharron, and I didn’t get the rest of your names. We had 26 members and five guests - Olga Pechak, Sharron Connelly, Jo Evelyn Ware, Julius Podhrasky, and Jerry Zmolek. We had a really good turnout. After lunch, President Dorothy called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Susan Crawford, Ella Marusak, and George Prachyl who were all related to some of our members. The minutes were read by Margaret Martinek, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine lady Eleanora announced July birthday celebrants - Dorothy Valek, Joan Strunc, Victoria Vlk, and we forget to mention new member Dorothy Bobalek. We will sing to you next month, Dorothy. This was the first time in a long time that all birth-

day celebrants were present. Eleanor also mentioned that she had a sympathy card for all to sign for member Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger for the loss of their daughter Susan Crawford who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Joyce and Joe. We signed a get well card for Ginny Svehlak, wishing her a speedy recovery. We also signed a get well card for Dorothy Booth wishing her a speedy recovery. Quilt scheduler Pat announced the quilt schedule which was the same as announced last month. Ann Clagett read a note from Joyce Ehrenberger thanking all for the prayers, cards, and calls with expressions of care and sympathy for their loss of daughter Susan. Libbie Vrla introduced her two guests - Olga Pechak and Sharron Connelly. We were so glad to see Olga again and happy to see and have Sharron visit. We hope you both come again. Ann Clagett introduced her sister Jo Evelyn Ware, and Ginny Svehlak introduced her sister Mary Zabojnik. Mary at one time was a member and now rejoined. We are glad to have you back. Ann talked about a quilt show that will be in Midlothian. She had all the information on it as to where and when. We thank Willie Mae Becan for the fabric that she gave the Circle. We are using it for the bottom of our Christmas quilt that we will be quilting in August. President Dorothy thanked everyone for coming, for all the items for the sale, the delicious lunch, and all the show-and-tell items. She announced the profit which was the most ever. She thanked Libbie for all the raffle items. Sharron Connelly was the

first winner, Dorothy J. Kudrna - the second winner, Irene Prachyl - the third winner, Eleanor Pelzel - fourth winner, and last, Bertha Podhrasky. I forgot to mention last month that Ann brought the door prize. It was won by Bertha so Bertha will bring the door prize in August. Thank you went out to Jerry Zmolek for taking out the trash. It was so good to see Jerry and Ella Mae. Jerry didn’t have his Braniff meeting this month. President Dorothy announced that the next meeting will be August 11. We will quilt, have a little gift exchange, door prize, and covered dish lunch.
Show-and-Tell Victoria Vlk was first. She brought a quilt top that she had made out of her late husband Stanley’s shirts. It was a beautiful butterfly pattern. Dorothy Bobalek showed a beautiful butterfly quilt made by her late mother. Dorothy Valek had two big oval pictures of her great-grandparents from both sides of her family - greatgrandparents from the Franc and Marie Zalman Kubelka side and greatgrandmother’s side Katerina and John Patril. She also had a family Kubelka picture and lovely stories with each picture. Lil Kosarek told a story of when the Ennis Sewing Circle started in 1958, the number of members, when they would meet, and how they all paid 10 cents a month dues - they paid it monthly not by the year as we do now - what they paid to have a quilt quilted, and how they raised money. One of the money-makers was a cookbook. Lil had one to show as mother bought her, Libbie, and myself one. The Cir-
cle would also eat out at a restaurant occasionally, and Lil told how much it all cost and so on. It was really interesting, especially to new members of our Circle. Bertha Podhrasky showed and was very proud of a wall hanging family group picture made by her granddaughter Trica Hambrick. She had pictures of her husband and their two children and embroidered sayings. It was really unique. Also, Bertha showed a wooden bowl handmade by her husband Julius when he was in the Air Force stationed in Hawaii in 1943. Ann Clagett showed a big handmade, quilted tote bag which was really pretty. Eleanora Pelzel showed a memory quilt that she made from the shirts of her late husband Carl. It was a square patch pattern. I wish everyone could have seen these beautiful quilts made by our members from their husbands’ shirts. They were really truly beautiful. Irene Prachyl showed a hand painted picture of the Schwarzenberg Castle in Nove Kestrany, Czech Republic, where our grandmother Babicka Patril worked taking care of the Schwarzenberg children before coming to America. I wrote of this castle last month. When Irene and her family visited the Czech Republic, they went to a house that our grandmother’s grandmother lived. This picture was on the wall. Irene recognized it being the Schwarzenberg Castle. She asked if the fellow that painted it would paint her one. He gave her the picture. She paid him for it twice. But that is another long story. Anyway, Irene is so happy to have the painting of the Schwarzenberg Castle. She showed a painting of the St. Charles Bridge and a little wooden wall hanging plaque with two wooden cups and

a saying in Czech - “Where there is tasty cooking, there is good living.” Ginny Svehlak brought a box full of dressed dolls that she has dressed for St. John Church Bazaar. She now has dressed 50 dolls which are all just beautiful. She thinks that is all she will dress this year. I can just see all the little girls at the bazaar trying to win at least one. Dorothy Prachyl brought pictures of herself and Dorothy J. Kudrna when they were in school in the homemaking class on a trip. They were in swimsuits swimming. Kay Lynn Kovar brought three old books from the late Katie Omelina Collection. One was a Czech songbook, a Bible, and another Czech book. Katie used to live across the street from me. Sharron Connelly showed a Slet marker that she stood on from the 1994 Slet held in the Czech Republic. The Slet was at a huge stadium that has since been torn down. Sharron also told a beautiful, sad story of three young men being killed in Czechoslovakia when under Communist rule. The parents of these young men were not allowed to pick up the bodies for burial. It was a sad story. I wish I could tell it all as Sharron did. I want to thank Rosie Steinman from Fort Worth for the two discs of National Polka Festival pictures and Deputy Prime Minister Karel Schwarzenberg pictures for the Ennis Sokol Museum. We appreciate all your pictures. Justin and Jacob Mraz sons of Julie and Jeff Mraz, grandsons of Pat and Van Fowler, have been playing with the Ennis All-Star Baseball team. Jacob was playing with the Ennis Ford team in Whitney, playing for consolation. Justin played with the Ennis AllStars. It was a fun time for them all. I went to a rosary for Johnny Mensik who is at peace with our Lord after a long illness. Our sympathy to Lydia and all the family. I want to thank Jimmy Strunc, nephew of Johnny, for telling me how much he looks forward to reading my Věstník letters. It was good to see, you, Jimmy, and I appreciate your nice words. I apologize for this being so long, but I just had too much to say. Stay well and cool. See everyone August 11. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, little gift exchange, and door prize. It was so good to see everyone. Georgie Morales Reporter —SPJST—

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The Ladies’ Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was called to order on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Three guests were recognized, welcomed, and invited to come back again by the 51 members present. Mary Ann Krivanek shared an inspirational message, “The Joys of a Summer Day.” I’m not so sure our summer days are as sweet as the words she read due to the heat and lack of rain. We still appreciated her thoughts and reminder that we should be thankful for each day no matter what the weather is doing. Nineteen members left bright and early on Thursday morning, July14 to go to WinStar. From the report I was given, apparently there were few winners and many losers. Pauline Morbitzer reported that she and Hermina Cihacek “lost their pants,” and Gloria Farek’s friend won really big. A good time was had by all, and we look forward to the next excursion to Oklahoma. Charitable donations were highlighted at the meeting, and as I’ve mentioned in the past, quite a few of our members are involved with volunteer work. We are blessed and look forward to doing our part to support as many of the “favorite” charities as possible. Some of those discussed were SafeHaven, St. Thomas’ food bank, clothes for the JPS Emergency Room, and First Street Methodist Mission. Lisa Juran reported that the mission gives formula to new mothers and will accept any items except large furniture. Lisa Juran, Glenn and Mary Ann Gibson, Lorinda Manasco, and Hermina Cihacek had kitchen duty for lunch. There was a special treat of shrimp and a really good variety of side dishes and meats available. As always, we are so thankful to those who set up lunch for the meeting. Good food was plentiful and delicious. There were a lot of July birthday celebrants. The “Happy Birthday” song this month went out to Kathy Ormsbee, Catherine Roche, Margaret Laymance, Debbie Akins, Jennifer Miller, Theretta Praslicka, and Stanley Krenek. A special birthday wish goes out to Martha Studer who turns a big 90 on July 28. Joyce Tesar reported the country/western monthly dance for the end
of the week, and she invited everyone within dancing distance to come out and have a great time. We also encourage all you Czechs and nonCzechs out there to participate in your lodge’s activities. Keep that heritage going. Wow, once again, there was an abundance of door prizes. Winners were Joy Booe, Estelle Hurtik, Sue Arnold, Theresa Clay, Lupe Esparza, Kathy Ormsbee, Betty Loyd, Hattie Scroggins, Lois Smith, Jean Sparkman, and Ann Schneider. After a show-and-tell session, Mary Ann Krivanek read some email jokes. Her “tickle box” got turned over, and she was still laughing and crying a couple of hours later. It was a joy to see the “giggles.” It was contagious, and everyone enjoyed watching her wipe her eyes. As a side note, those with health issues were discussed prior to the meeting. We heard that Joe Kozel was released from the hospital and attended church the past Sunday; Marlene Bass, our president, fell and had a hip injury; Monalee Hattendorf was to have another surgery on her leg; and Al Kercho was mending. Sherri Kubala Watkins reported on her mom and dad, Helen and Albert Kubala. They are currently residing at Avalon

Along with making certain that her children learned the Czech dances and songs and participated in youth club functions, she was active as a member of the entertainment committee, door committee, decorating committee, kitchen and dessert committee, and calling committee. She served as reporter for more than 40 years. We are all going to miss Rose’s letters to the Vestnik where her name became synonymous with Lodge 84, Dallas. “Rose was so proud of her grandchildren Scott and Elizabeth. She loved to brag about their achievements and how glad she was about their continued participation at the lodge and at church. Daughter Anne and husband Steve were always there to help and support .
. . Kenny and wife Dona as well. Stepchildren and grandchildren Sonja, Eddie, Kayley, and Zachary were always thought of. “Rose loved her family very much . . . and Randy, well what can I say. I don’t think I ever laughed more than to hear them talk to each other, not always agreeing but there was so much humor . . . I know that helped. There’s an old saying, ‘Without love and laughter, there is no joy.’ Rose had all of that and more.” —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Vacation in Corpus Christi
Dear Vestnik Readers, I patted several stingrays. I saw a dolphin show. I saw sea horses. I ate at Pier 99, a famous restaurant. We went on the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier. It was huge. It had a dentist office, hospital, and post office, and a chapel. I went to Port Aransas and swam in the ocean. The waves were huge. There
was a lot of seaweed. I saw a lot of jelly fish, too, but they didn’t get me! Next stop: District Three camp at Cooper Farm. Stay cool, April Dvorak —SPJST—

State Youth Director: August updates
Dear Members, It is amazing how fast July flashed before my eyes! We will be celebrating the achievements of our SPJST Youth at State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at the Frank W. Mayborn Center in Temple. By the time you read this newsletter, some of you will have already received your packet informing you of your working assignment at State YAD. Because of the many Home Office staffers wanting to volunteer, we did not schedule some of you to work. This should give you time to work with and support your youth. If I have assigned you to a job that may present a conflict, please give me a call and let me know. SPJST Youth Camps have come to an end. What a great time I had with all the youth, District Youth Counselors, their assistants, youth leaders, and chaperones. I have many memories of the high ropes course and riding the inner tubes on Lake Fayette with the youth.
Last Chance: Book your rooms for the End-of-Summer Getaway! Good times await you at the Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway on August 12 to 14 for a fun-filled weekend. Please see more information in this week’s Vestnik. This year, we will be staying at the Emerald Beach Holiday Inn which is located right on the beach. There will be a lot of activities for the whole family.
Grandparents Day is September 11 Grandparents Day is Saturday, September 11. Remember all the wonderful grandparents who have been so special in your lives. It’s also a day for families. Everyone is somebody’s
grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day. It can be a time to discover one’s roots and even a time to learn patience, understanding, and appreciation for the elderly - the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. SPJST Statewide Bowling Tournament Youth Leaders, please inform your SPJST youth members who are 16 years or older that they are invited to participate in the SPJST Bowling Tournament being held at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas, on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Entry fee for members will be $20 and non-members will be $25.
Fall District Youth Counselor Meeting The 2011 Fall District Youth Counselor Meeting will be September 24 and 25 at The Waits Farm Retreat Bed and Breakfast located on the Old Spanish Trail (Highway 21) in historic Dime Box, Texas. Youth leaders, if you have any items you would like your DYC to discuss at our meeting, please submit your request in writing to your DYC. This way, your voices can be heard and addressed. Waits Farm Retreat was a working farm owned by one of the prominent families of the Dime Box area, Augustus Spacek. The retreat is still a working farm and has an active cattle operation with the major focus on vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, berry patches, grapes, antique roses, and an herb garden. It will be a tranquil place for our meeting. I will be mailing more information about the meeting in the coming weeks. Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month. Good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 9. That’s Heritage

9. Listen for cars approaching from the side or behind you.
Biking on main roads or in traffic can be dangerous (and scary!) It’s crucial to stay alert and be cautious. Remember, you may be riding a bike—but you’re actually driving the same way you would if you were in a car. Always follow traffic signals and road signs just like cars do.
10. Don’t follow cars too closely (you may be in their blind spot).
How can you make biking in city situations as safe as possible? Well, let’s find out. How many of these rules do you already follow?
12. Always be prepared to stop. Keep your hands on or close to the brakes.
1. Always ride on the RIGHT. Remember to “go with the flow.” Never, ever ride against traffic. Cars will not be expecting to find a biker when they round a corner or go over a hill.
School is coming and Johnny wants to start riding his bike to school. There are some safety rules Johnny should know before he starts riding his bike to school. Help Johnny learn if the statements below are True or False by circling T or F.
2. Ride single file. When passing other bikers or pedestrians, let them know your position by shouting out something like, ‘On your left!’
11. Know your road signs and obey them. A smart biker follows the rules of the road.
1. T or F
Always ride on the right side of the road.
3. Always check behind you when changing lanes.
2. T or F
4. Watch out for dangerous things in the road way. Road litter, potholes, gravel and storm gates can all cause you to lose control.
Always ride next to your buddies so that they know where you are in relation to them.
3. T or F
5. Stop at all stop signs and at all street lights. Be extra careful at crossroads.
Don’t worry about potholes, road litter, or storm grates since your bike can role over them without any problem.
4. T or F
For a right turn hold your left arm out and up in an L shape.
5. T or F
Bicycles do not have to stop at stop signs or street lights.
6. T or F
When you are riding your bike it is ok to make quick turns and sudden stops. It is up to the motorist to make sure they do not hit you.
7. T or F
Always check behind you when changing lanes. Always be prepared to stop. Keep your hands on or close to the brakes.
6. Always signal before making a left or right turn. To make a left turn: look behind you, hold your left arm straight out and proceed carefully. For a right turn hold your left arm out and up in an ‘L’ shape. 7. Keep control of your bike. Don’t swerve or make sudden turns. Drivers may not be able to react fast enough to avoid colliding with you. 8. Ride at least 3 feet away from parked cars. Someone could open their door unexpectedly and well?

8 Ways to Save on School Expenses
(MS) Every year, parents spend significant amounts of money on school expenses. While there’s not much parents can do about tuition, there are ways to save on additional expenses, including clothing. Restocking a student’s wardrobe can be costly, but
savvy Moms and Dads can lessen the blow in a variety of ways. Although students may not yet be ready to head back to class, both parents and children may not be looking forward to school shopping for a number of reasons. Expenses: Statistics posted on Chiff.com indicate that $7.2 billion were spent on school clothing in 2009 for American students. In Canada, sta-

tistics show that nearly $450 million were spent on boy’s and girl’s clothing and accessories in 2008. Shopping for school items can be a big expense, one that’s especially tough to handle after paying for a summer vacation or financing kids’ stays at camp. Time: Crowded stores can make shopping stressful, especially when kids (and adults) would rather be spending time elsewhere.

Intimidation: Facing a store full of stocked racks and shelves can make even the most avid shopper feel a little anxious. Parents face decisions about choosing clothing that is both acceptable to the school and trendy enough for their kids. This can put added pressure on shoppers. Cranky kids: While some children may relish the idea of picking out a new wardrobe, others may become disgruntled by heading to the store having to try on different things and spend time away from friends. Whether school shopping is fun or feared, it’s a necessity for parents and kids alike. Here are eight tips to make the process a bit easier and help parents save money as well.
1. Assess what is already on hand. Shopping doesn’t have to mean creating an entirely new wardrobe from scratch. It often means supplementing existing clothing with new pieces that can make things look fresh. Unless a child has entirely outgrown pants and shirts from last year, chances are there will be a number of pieces that are still usable and appropriate. Take a day or two to go through kids’ wardrobes and set aside items that can be used for school. Make a list of new items to purchase. 2. Establish a budget. Set a limit as to how much will be spent on each child and don’t stray over that limit. Around $150 to $200 may be adequate to pick up a few basics. Taking out cash from the bank and spending only what is in hand may make shoppers less likely to overspend or turn to credit cards for purchases.

Studying plants and habitat of quail.
During the last week of June, I attended the South Texas Bobwhite Brigade Wildlife and Leadership Camp at the 74 Ranch in Campbellton, Texas. During that week, I did various activities to help me learn about quail. The Brigades is an educational/leadership development, non-profit organization that allows high school students the opportunity to learn more about native species and how to conserve that population. I learned a ton! I met new people and made many memories. While at camp, I participated in many activities. One of those activities that I really enjoyed was a team-building activity called the Sherpa Walk, where we had a blindfolded partner and had to lead them through different obstacles by only talking or by only touch. On my turn, my
3. Stock up on the basics. New undergarments and socks will be needed. Aim for about 10 to 12 pairs of each. This also may be a good time to purchase pre-adolescent girls a training bra or sports bra to provide some support. 4. Buy new shoes. Shoes are one element of a wardrobe that may need to be entirely new. Active children tend
partner could only touch me and instead of crawling, I did somersault! Oops! We also dissected quail and learned how to stuff a quail in our taxidermy session. On the last night of camp, we all had to make tri-folds explaining the conservation information we learned to use in presentations, and since I was the first one finished, I got to stay up until 4:30 in the morning helping others finish their display board. What a long day! The Brigades was an amazing experience, and I am hoping to go back next year as an Assistant Covey Leader. Fraternally submitted, Michelle House —SPJST—
to wear out shoes quickly. One pair of sneakers and one pair of dressier shoes, like oxfords, or ballet flats for girls, may be adequate. 5. Shop sales. If the weather is warm, it’s possible to save money on clearance T-shirts and shorts that stores are putting on sale to make room for next season’s items. Don’t fill a student’s wardrobe with heavy

sweatshirts or sweaters at this juncture. Layering options are good because students can adjust accordingly to feel comfortable. 6. Intermingle designer with discount. Not every item in a child’s wardrobe has to be trendy. Layering items, such as T-shirts, can often be picked up for a discount in stores like Target or Walmart or Old Navy. Outer items, like jeans or some shirts, can be picked up from the trendier stores. Shop their sales and see if they offer coupons by signing up to loyalty Web sites. 7. Go early in the day. Although it may be a challenge get the kids up and dressed to visit stores when they’re in vacation mode, arriving early means thinner crowds and refreshed children. Kids who are tired or hungry can be prone to meltdowns. Pack snacks and drinks to be on the safe side. Some stores offer early bird special sales, which can make shopping once the doors open even more advantageous. 8. Do some online shopping, too. Once the children have gone to bed for the evening, do some uninterrupted online shopping. Comparison shop and figure out if buying online is a good deal after factoring in shipping costs. —SPJST—

and cold drinks, including alcohol. They are the sweet centre of town. Every parent, having been a child once, often takes their children to the cukrárna with joy, a touch of nostalgia, and maybe even a guilty feeling that they are doing something that doesn’t really comply with everyday standards, that it’s a moment which is fundamental to everyone’s life; yet, it is stolen from the “more serious” things that we adults have to deal with, and that it’s also a special occasion because you just don’t go to the cukrárna every day. It would even be part of a kind of social standard and festive Sunday afternoon – a walk or a visit and then: with a meaningful smile, off to the cukrárna. And there, among the cakes, icecream, and all kinds of other delights, you suddenly find yourself in an incomparable world completely cut off from the noise of cars and trams, the bustle and worries of life. Once the door closes behind you and you are embraced by the sweet, familiar aroma of coffee and cakes, you forget that any world outside still exists. On the contrary, the world of the cukrárna is the one that exists “through the looking-glass.”

A Glimpse at the History of the Cukrárna. The sale of sweet treats was not unknown in Prague either. In the first half of the 1770s, there were already four coffee-shops where it was possible to sit and enjoy cakes and other delights. Another place of renown was Růžodol in Karlín, a building with a garden offering a pub, coffee-shop, confectioner’s and delicatessen as well as a skittles alley and dance hall. At the turn of the century and beginning of the 20th century, the sweet temptation spread much further: As early as 1910 František Myšák opened the legendary cukrárna on Vodičková street. Two years later, a coffee-shop (with confectionary) is opened in the cubist style House of the Black Madonna, followed by the Berger cukrárna, also on Vodičková, a cukrárna and coffee-shop in the Juliš hotel on Václavské náměstí — Wenceslas Square, or the Erhardtova cukrárna opened in 1937 on Milada Horáková street, among many others. Sweet foods were also eaten in many hotels — Paris Hotel, Savoy — and coffee-shops — Korso, Imperial, Slavia.

Vodičková street was evidently inclined towards cukrárnas, as the first fruit-cukrárna to open in Prague, selling sorbet ice-cream, also came into existence here, in the Světozor arcade. To this day, it remains one of the most frequented locations. Several others among those most famous places have been, or will be, re-opened.
