Corpus Christi Bound

SPJST members from across the state will gather in Corpus Christi

this weekend for fun, kolaches, games and activities, and SPJST fraternalism. Many activities are planned for an exciting time. The weekend schedule is on the back page of this week’s Vestnik. Visit www.spjst.org for the latest news, and be sure to “like” SPJST on Facebook for last minute updates. See you in Corpus Christi!

Vestnik Archive Our wonderful TCGS volunteers who are graciously scanning all back issues of the Vestnik are finding so many interesting items in these Vestniks every day. From the December 9, 1964 issue:

“Waiting for the “6:20.” In the above picture, West Postmaster Raymond Hruska is shown standing alongside the mail bags containing the Vestnik, ready for shipment on the 6:20 evening U.S. Mail truck out of West. This is the scene every Tuesday, just after the sacks are taken to the rear of the post office, shortly after the press run of almost 10,000 Vestniks is completed.” On that same page is an article from F.A. Kadlecek who was serving as secretary of Lodge 88, Hous-

ton. F.A. writes, “Many inquiries concerning the opening date of the new lodge have been received. The building is practically completed; however, furniture, etc. will have to be installed before the new hall will be opened.” A photo also appears of Lodge 88 organizers gathered around a stack of certificates that is two feet high. The cutline states, “This is the result of one month’s activity in the big Lodge 88 membership drive which will end on the day of the official opening of the new lodge home on Beall Street at the west end of West 15th Street.” Still, on that same page is a little filler: A business man reports that with inflation and after 10 years of hard work, he now makes almost as much money as he told his wife he was making when he proposed.

Life Insurance Awareness Month Coming Soon Life Insurance Awareness Month is in September. The Vestnik and SPJST website will include informative articles throughout the month. Two-time NBA champion and reality TV star Lamar Odom is the LIAM 2011 spokesperson. LIAM is sponsored by LIFE Foundation.

No August 31 Vestnik No August 31 Vestnik will be published. Please make a note of this important item and get your items in accordingly. Thank you.

Grandparents Salute If you are a grandparent or a grandchild and you are an SPJST member, please turn to page 7. We are looking forward to receiving your greeting. The deadline is August 19.

VĚSTNÍK, (USPS 658480) is published weekly except the last week of August and the fourth week of December by VĚSTNÍK, P.O. Box 100, Temple, TX 76503-0100. Subscription rates are $25 per year for non-members. Membersʼ fees are paid as part of the insurance fee collected by SPJST, 520 North Main, Temple, TX 76501. Second-class postage paid at Temple, TX and additional mailing offices. The exchange of opinions, ideas and information is a vital aspect of our fraternal Society and enables us to make more informed decisions. The views expressed by writers in the Vestnik do not necessarily represent the views of the Editor or SPJST management. Please sign all correspondence intended for publication. Member expresses scholarship thanks

Dear Mr. Vanicek and SPJST, Thank you for selecting me as the recipient of a $1,000 Freshman Scholarship. I am very excited about starting my undergraduate degree at Blinn Junior College with plans to transfer to Texas A&M. I know that this scholarship money will be of great financial assistance in paying for turion and books this year. I also am very grateful to Mrs. Marceil Malak for being in attendance at La Grange High School scholarship assembly and presenting the scholarship to me. I know her time is valuable, and it was certainly nice of her to make time to come for the presentation. I am very grateful for the scholarship and look forward to my freshman year in college. We are Moravians!

Hello, Melanie. My name is Frank Bravenec, and I am 78 years old. I have been a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for over 75 years. I never found out why, but the picture taken, when I and others received our 75-year pin, was never printed in the Vestnik. But, that’s a question for another time. This message is to clear up an error that is repeated over and over. It has to do with describing certain Texas people as “Czechs.” My great-grandfather came to the USA in 1867 arriving in Galveston, Texas. Many years ago, a group of my relatives and some friends were

gathered together, and I told a friend that we were Czechs. My oldest uncle overheard the conversation and immediately and very sternly corrected me stating, “We are not Czechs! We are Moravians, and don’t you ever forget it!” Czechoslovakia did not exist in the 1800s, as you probably know. It seems that most of the people who came to Texas in the 1800s came from Moravia, and spoke the Moravian dialect. That became very apparent when I attended a Czech language class given at Lodge 88. The instructor was teaching the official Czech language, while many of the class members, when young, had spoken the language of their parents. It has also become apparent when several of my Czech speaking relatives traveled to the Czech Republic and had some communication difficulties. It turns out that my wife’s family also came here from Moravia, in 1872. So, just for the record, we’re 100 percent Moravians, and not Czechs. (Note: I do know that the area formally known as Moravia is now a part of the Czech Republic.) Did you know that SPJST is also an abbreviation for “Special People Jesus Sent to Texas?” I have attached a picture taken at Lodge 88 in 1949. I was standing third from the right. I was “Father Time” and have a white wig and a black robe. My cousin John Bravenec was third from the left. He became a pastor and was at the Brethren church in Temple. The two center people are Ed Kadlecek and Marilyn Earl. I don’t remember who the others are. I enjoy looking at every Vestnik, and reading the regular info about CZ. Czech it out! Frank Bravenec —SPJST—

Lodge 15, Buckholts member: Happy 90th Birthday, Frank!

Lodge 24, Cyclone: Come Meet the Czechaholics

The name may sound new to many of you, but when you meet them or see their names, you will know that their families have been playing polka music for many years. I remember when we would stand in front of the stage at polka festivals watching our family members on stage. It seems like just yesterday. I remember being in East Bernard at a dance, and the boys were talking about starting a band. They were joking about calling themselves the Czechaholics. In just a year or two, the Czechaholics band was born, and they began playing for church picnics and festivals. I knew right away from the choice of the band’s name that they would be entertaining and special. Their first CD was titled “Spreading the Tradition,” and on the cover was the band riding in an old manure spreader—mule and all. I was definitely convinced that they would have something special at every performance to please their audience, and they sure do! When you meet the band, you will find Mark Hermes on accordion. Mark is related to the Dujka Brothers, and he seems to have picked up a style of playing a lot like my dad, Anton Vrazel of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts. On drums is Brian Svetlik, and on electric bass is his brother, Greg Svetlik. Both are sons of Lawrence and Joyce Svetlik. Many of you know Lawrence as one of the founders of the Red Ravens

9

band and see him at all of the Red Ravens dances. I also love to tell Joyce “those Svetlik boys sure are singing pretty tonight.” On saxophone and button accordion is Brian Klekar. You will also find his dad playing saxophone in the Red Ravens band. On rhythm and lead guitar is Randy Majek, a name associated with polka music for decades. He is the son of the late Frank Majek of the Majek Orchestra. So as you listen to the Czechaholics, you will hear some familiar polkas, waltzes, and old time country songs—their sound being a blend of many leading Czech polka bands, such as The Red Ravens, Dujka Brothers, Vrazels Polka Band, and The Majek Orchestra. But with all of that said, they are the Czechaholics, playing their own unique and special music in their own unique way. If you would like to know a little more about the band and you have a computer, just go to www.czechaholics.com, where you can hear samples of their songs. See you all at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall on Saturday, September 10, 2011, with your dancing shoes on—ready to dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Come early and meet the band members and check out their latest CD, entitled “Cytri” (in Czech, it means four for their fourth CD). SPJST is working on another cookbook so get those recipes in and buy your new cookbook. Evelyn Gustafson sent a get well card to Charlie Taylor. Charlie is the polka DJ on KTAE. So happy that you are back at work, Charlie. Polka time was not the same without you. Charlie was a guest at our meeting. Welcome, Charlie! Come anytime. It’s always good to see you. Artie Monson brought up the upcoming battle dances—one in October and the other in November. Do we wish to have the kitchen open? We need to organize the help now. Also, the December dance, are we going to have refreshments again? It’s hard to believe that more than half of the year is gone. We had two more visitors—Diane Lindemann and Trink Ruthven. They would like to have a benefit for Cody and Kayla Ruthven. Both have been diagnosed with Neiman-Pick Type C, a very rare genetic abnormality. The members will donate the hall at no cost. Anyone interested in helping can call Linda Lindemann (512) 273-2507 or cell - (512) 914-0991. Sales Agent Betty Gaskamp attended a two-day seminar and is ready to sign up new members. SPJST Financial University

Insuring Your Estate Plan by Reviewing By James L. Lee, III, CPA

The Tax Relief Act of 2001 brought forth diverse and complex tax law changes that may impact a number of areas within a person’s financial plan. One such area is estate planning. Although estate planning is fundamentally about controlling personal assets while passing them to heirs in the James L. Lee, III most efficient manner possible, most individuals would associate this with not paying or minimizing the estate tax. For this very reason, it may be beneficial for an individual to review their estate plan currently in place to insure they are able to fully take advantage of the tax law changes. One of the most significant changes within the tax law was the increase in the amount of assets each person can transfer free of estate and gift tax and the ultimate repeal of the estate tax for one year in 2010. This exemption is currently $3,500,000 and may be indexed for inflation thereafter depending upon how Congress legislates in 2009. This will effectively increase the amount of assets an individual can pass on to his/her family or others without exposing assets to an estate. Given these changes, there are several areas within your current estate plan that may be reviewed in order to take full advantage. One such area involves the area of gifting. By utilizing both the gift and estate tax lifetime “applicable exclusion amount” and the $13,000 per recipient annual gift tax exclusion, an individual may sharply reduce any potential estate tax liability. Also, for those individuals that have authorized a trusted individual to carry out their gifting program, the documents in place should be reviewed in light of the new law. An example would be a power of attorney. If you have a power of attorney in place that authorizes a trusted agent to continue your gifting program, make sure it allows the agent to take full advantage of the changes within the new tax law. Gifting allows an individual to transfer assets from their estate to their heirs while they are still alive. For most individuals, however, the transfer of assets to their heirs will take place at their death. The document that facilitates this

transfer is a will and, thus, another area that should be reviewed. Wills are commonly used to direct an estate plan. The will is the document that determines what amount of assets are exposed to an estate tax to fully take advantage of the applicable exclusion amount. For example, Mr. Jones’ will may read that, upon his death sufficient assets will be exposed to estate taxes covered by the exclusion without incurring an estate tax due while the extra assets will be left to his wife. This is possible by exposing $3,500,000 worth of assets to the estate tax and, therefore, fully utilizing the exemption afforded each individual upon their death. A problem may arise if the will specifically quantifies the amount of assets as $3,500,000. This amount may be wrong in future years because the exemption is subject to change by Congress and will likely be indexed for inflation after 2009. Instead of quantifying a specific dollar amount in your will, it could be changed to incorporate formula language. Formula language will allow an individual, upon their death, to fully take advantage of the applicable exclusion amount no matter when they die. A common substitute for a will that many people opt for is the living trust. The living trust not only serves the same function as the will but may provide additional benefits such as professional management of assets along with circumvention of the probate process upon death. But keep in mind that assets held in a revocable living trust remain subject to estate tax just like assets that pass by will. Therefore, a living trust should be reviewed in the same manner as a will. Of course, this brief article is no substitute for a careful examination of all of the advantages and disadvantages of this matter in light of your unique personal financial circumstances. Before implementing any estate planning strategy, contact and consult with your Financial Advisor, estate planning attorney or tax professional. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by James Lee, III, CPA, Wealth Advisor of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC and located at 2100 Trimmier Road, Suite 105, Killeen, Texas. James Lee, III can be contacted toll free at (877) 323-3875 or email James.Lee@RaymondJames.com. —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST District One went on its annual Schlitterbahn trip. It was very fun! We woke up bright and early and were on our way. We had a fun time on the bus. When we got there, we automatically went to all the fun rides. It was a long day with burning feet, sunburns, and best of all—cool water. Thanks, Grace Dusek, for doing all the rides with me. I had a fun time with you! The bus ride home was very tiring, but somehow, we managed to stay up and have a fun night, SPJST! Submitted by, Makenzie Mendez —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Cooks It Up!

Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall held its annual barbecue cook-off July 15 and 16, 2011. Youth members and their families worked extra hard in the July heat to sell hamburgers, chips, and sausage wraps. Families also baked cookies, brownies, and other goodies to help raise money

for District Two Beseda Dancers. We will decide if we will add to this amount at our next meeting. It was a very hot and greasy job. But, everyone had a good time. —Submitted by Lynette Talasek, Youth Leader

The Four Corners of the Czech Republic, Part 4: Podluzi

The border point of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria is the confluence of two great rivers, the Dyje, from the west, and the Morava, from which the region of Moravia takes its name. Along the rivers is a natural reserve of marsh forest and a bastion of Moravian culture called Podluží, or “under the marshland”.

In the little town of Lanžhot, near the Czech, Austrian, and Slovak border, the church bells ring as I watch a horse draw a cart out of town and towards the 3,000 hectares of the Podlužní Forest. All along the streets of Lanžhot are doors bearing the signature floral motifs of Moravian culture. The culture of this place stretches back far beyond the industrial era that superseded so much traditional culture in Europe, to Croatian settlers uprooted by invading Turks, and to ancient tribes of nameless Slavs who left pagan tombs and Christian churches, further back to the Celts who named the rivers, and even earlier peoples who took this route from the Baltic to the Adriatic and along the Danube river. Jaroslav Třetina is the town’s chronicler:

Lidskost

“The Great Moravian Empire was here, with seats at Mikulčice and Pohansko, before them the Celts. Lanžhot suffered horribly from invasions of Tatars, Hungarians and others. This town was built as a territorial lookout post on the borders of Germanic, Moravian and Hungarian domains, and that’s what the community takes its name from.”

The conversation with Mr. Třetina, turns from the town’s motley history to its local life and the subtle diversity between villages. His wife, who until now has been peeling carrots at a bucket and offering me from time to time a pastry, perks at the mention of dialect. She is from the nearby village of Kobylí and wants in on the discussion.

Třetinová - “I’m from Kobylí, and I have my own dialect too.” Třetina - “She’s been here for 40 years.” Třetinová - “I’ve been here for 43 years, and I still speak my own dialect.” Třetina - “Her brother says she’s started speaking like us.” Třetinová - “I speak the way my beak grew on me!” Třetina - “And our costumes are different from village to village as well. Whether she’s someone’s wife or daughter, if she’s wearing traditional dress, I recognize if she’s from Kostice or from Tvrdonice or from Hrusky . . .” CF - “And how often is the traditional dress worn?” Třetina - “Well there’s everyday traditional dress, and there are maybe 50 or 100 women who still wear it when they go to the fields. But then there’s festive dress that the musicians wear for feasts, and ceremonial dress for weddings, Corpus Christi, confirmation, and so on. They’re clothes for women and single men; married men don’t wear these costumes anymore.”

life - they held marriages. There were richer and poorer people, tradesmen; we know what they ate, what clothes they wore and how they made them. We know how they lived – in sunken huts covered with mud, in one room along with their animals. It was a primitive way of life.” It’s quite hard to express just how far removed this kind of appreciation for traditional life is from life elsewhere in the Czech Republic, to say nothing of the Czech capital. From anywhere west of Brno, especially if you know the Czech Republic as a visitor and have never been to rural Moravia, it’s almost impossible to imagine, but there are elderly neighbors of the Třetina family who wear their local dress, or kroje whenever they leave the house. Not only kroje, but all the celebrated elements of Moravian culture come together here: the wine, of course – you’d be hard pressed to find villages with wine bars elsewhere – the religion, the special dialects that feel so eastern and, of course, the music. It may have little to do with the persistence of Moravian culture, but it comes as no surprise that one of the oldest Slavic settlements found in the Czech Republic was found nearby Lanžhot at Pohansko, which translates as — a place of pagans. Half a century of digging around at Pohansko has yielded a trove of ancient Slavic cultural heritage, as local historian Alena Káňová describes: “This year we are celebrating 50 years of research at Pohansko, and the discoveries it’s given us. The finds here have shown us exactly the religion the first Slavic settlers had – they were pagans who converted to Christianity and converted back again – after building Christian churches they began ritually burying themselves with their horses. We know about their views of family

By the late 10th century though, at the time that Prague Castle was rising to glory, the town at “the place of pagans” was falling apart. While Pohansko was being sacked and harried by invasions of Hungarians that disrupted all of Central Europe, nature herself was conspiring against it, creating the marshland after which Podluží has since been named. “The other thing that led to the demise of Pohansko was flooding, because around the 10th century the Dyje River changed its course due to climactic conditions and the area became a floodplain. We know that only a few hundred people remained, the fort was destroyed and they probably eked out a living in the forests until Břeclav was founded in the 11th century, and we assume that it was the people from Pohansko who inhabited it.” The Podluží’s major city, Břeclav, has kept control of an important transport line ever since the fall of Pohansko. It became the home of Germans and Jews, and even an unlikely set of immigrants that left a subtle, supplementary mark on the local Slavic culture. Alena Káňová again:

“In the 16th century when the Turks had occupied nearly the entire Balkans, a group of central Croatians were forced off of their land and took the offers of certain noblemen to come to their estates in Central Europe. So they settled in this area that is now divided among the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary.”

The Moravian Croats ended up with a hard lot. The nationalistic First Republic was wary of them. The Germans were aware of the tension and forced them into the army in the Second World War. Because of that, the post-war Communist regime saw them as conspirators and dispersed their population around the country, and thus ended the 400 year history of the Moravian Croats. “They influenced the area quite a lot in their day, because they brought a distinct culture with them: their music, dress, and of course their language, which has remained to this day in the form of certain last names. Today there are very small remnants of words and intonations in local dialects that betray a Croatian origin, and their clothing, settlements, and trades have vanished, leaving people today with only an awareness that their ancestors belonged to a national minority.”

Likewise, all that remains of the many thousands of Jews, Germans and others who shared in the making of Podluží history is a vestige here, a vestige there. With this history in mind, one wonders where Moravian custom itself will be a hundred years from now. Lanžhot mayor, František Hrnčíř. “We’re trying to maintain the folk customs that have existed here since time immemorial, but it gets harder and harder. The young people today have more opportunities than they did under the previous regime, they finish school and don’t go straight to work, they can travel around the world, so they avail themselves of these chances.”

Page 19

And indeed the young people here have a lot to do.

followed by the Republican Feast. And people wear traditional dress for all of these events. I used to wear it, my sons wore it, it goes on from generation to generation in the families here.”

The events that Mayor Hrnčíř names are just a few of the near weekly occasions when the wine, music, and kroje come out in — Lanžhot. Christian Falvey “The young people organize all of the festivals here, we don’t get involved, we just give them money – where else would they get it from? In January, there is a traditional dance, in February the Lenten carnival with traditional dress and music, there’s a costume event for Easter, a costume excursion in June, a games feast in August that takes five days. Then the biggest event here is the Lanžhot Feast in September
