District One, Two Youth Win State Royalty Crowns Approximately 250 SPJST youth
from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 6 to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2011 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods (pies), handicraft, photography, sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were each given a drawing of a sailboat and an assortment of art supplies to display “SPJST Sailabration.” District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Cyclone, Ennis, Hawley, Houston, Taiton, and New Braunfels. The grand finale of the 2011 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2011-2012 State Roy-
mann of Lodge 17, New Tabor; Brooke Hoelscher of Lodge 47, Seaton; Scott Cowan of Lodge 84, Dallas; Audree Williams of Lodge 215, South Plains; Ashley Moncrief of Lodge 88, Houston; Jessica Fucik of Lodge 30, Taiton; and Shelby Howard of Lodge 185, New Braunfels. They each received $1,000 grants. The SPJST Top Junior Award went to Dillon and Macy Narro (tie), both of Lodge 17, New Tabor and SPJST Top Teen Award went to Colby Havemann of Lodge 17, New Tabor. Complete State YAD — including beseda participants and talent, craft, and poster and scrapbook — results will appear in the Vestnik - Youth Spectacular to be published on October 12. —SPJST—

VӖSTNÍK
Congratulations, SPJST Youth!
Congratulations to each and every youth club member who par-
ticipated in this year’s State Youth Achievement Day. Whether you took home a medal, trophy, plaque, or not — you are a winner because you were there, and you were participating. That is what counts. 2010 State King Samuel and Queen Jacqueline crowned the 2011 State Royalty. And, what a proud moment it was for Lodges 9, Snook and 48, Beyersville! State Queen Alyssa Torres is the first-ever State Queen from Lodge 48, Beyersville. In 1968—or 43 years ago, Robert Leshikar won the State King title. And, it’s been 24 years since Lodge 9 won the state title. In 1986, John See, III was State King, and in 1987, Melissa Victorick was State Queen. And, now Robert Lewis brings the State King title home to Snook. Congratulations to both Robert and Alyssa along with State Duke Jaxson Brisco, also of Lodge 9, and State Duchess Emily Filla, also of Lodge 48. The 2011 Royalty begins their reign with their first official appearance in the Westfest parade on Saturday, September 3 at 10 a.m. Complete State YAD results will be published in the SPJST Youth Spectacular on October 12. Results and photos are also online at www.spjst.org. To order DVDs of all talent performances and royalty speeches, see page 11. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Wedding Fashion Show Thanks to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor Business Manager Diane Volek for sharing a wonderful article that appeared in the Austin American-Statesman on August 3
and an accompanying video featuring a wedding fashion show held at the rest home. The rest home coordinated the show and dressed several residents in wedding gowns complete with makeup and hairdos. What an absolutely touching event this must have been. Hats off to the Rest Home staff for their creativity. To view the video, visit www.spjst.org in the links section. The video is also posted on our SPJST Facebook page. In one comment on the article/video page, Pat Wurtz sums it up best: “Takes a team to give the residents what they need and deserve and S.P.J.S.T. has the best team in Texas. It’s no wonder that they have the happiest residents in Texas.” No August 31 Vestnik No August 31 Vestnik will be published. Please make a note of this and get your articles in accordingly. Thank you.

Should I Convert to a Roth IRA? By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Should I convert to a Roth IRA? This is a perplexing question many investors are asking themselves in the wake of all the new tax laws. If the opportunity is available, should an individual take a distribution from an existing IRA and roll it over (i.e., convert it) to a Roth IRA? A good question, but James L. Lee, III not so fast. The first question should be “Can I convert to a Roth IRA?” For calendar years before 2010, eligibility to elect to convert from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is limited to those with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of less than $100,000 – single filers and married filing jointly. This limit will be eliminated in 2010. When computing the $100,000 threshold, the amount converted and the required minimum distributions are not included in countable income. Beginning in 2010 and thereafter, the $100,000 conversion threshold has been eliminated. In addition, for those converting in 2010 only, 50 percent of the conversion income will be included on the 2011 income tax return and 50 percent of the conversion income will be included in the 2012 income tax return. If this election is made, no conversion income is included in the tax return for 2010. The taxpayer must affirmatively elect out of the two year spread of the 2010 conversion income to 2011 and 2012. The two year spread of 2010 conversion income only applies to conversions made in 2010, and not in later years. Taxpayers should attempt to project their income levels for 2011 and 2012 to determine if electing out of the two year spread makes sense for them. If the election out of the two year spread is made, then all of the conversion income will be recognized on their 2010 income tax return. For those who desire to convert to a Roth IRA in 2009 but who are excluded from even considering a Roth conversion due to the $100,000 AGI limitation, such individuals with the ability to do so are likely to manipulate their compensation to fit under the current $100,000 limit. An example of this strategy might be as simple as deferring a bonus into the following tax year, or as complex as
restructuring contract agreements. Regardless, the availability of a Roth conversion must be confirmed before evaluating the considerations relative to the alternative IRA strategies. OK. Let’s say the income limits of the Roth IRA conversion are no problem. What are some of the considerations in comparing a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA? Conventional wisdom suggests that most taxpayers expect to be in a lower tax bracket when they retire. Financial planning based on this assumption would advise an individual to defer taxes to the greatest extent possible during working years, and ultimately pay the tax bill during retirement at a lower individual rate. Using this logic, converting to the Roth IRA would appear to be a less attractive strategy with taxes paid sooner, based on the individual’s current tax bracket. These days, many people are asking the question: “Will I really be in a lower tax bracket in retirement?” Some important considerations include: What is the likelihood of higher marginal tax rates in the future? Will current deductions for dependents, business expenses and or mortgage interest offset less income in retirement? Will the individual continue to work in retirement, or will they even need the income? Is the objective of the IRA to accumulate assets for heirs? Evaluating the tax impact of the Roth IRA vs. the traditional IRA depends on the assumptions made. Another consideration is whether the account owner will be subject to the estate tax upon death. If the estate tax is an issue, then converting to Roth IRA may make sense in the long run. Another important consideration in comparing the two alternatives is the manner in which the tax on the distribution from the existing IRA will be paid. For example, a person with a top marginal bracket of 28 percent is considering rolling over an existing $100,000 IRA to a Roth IRA. When the $100,000 is distributed, the tax due will be $28,000. If the comparison to the existing $100,000 IRA is made with the Roth IRA starting $72,000 ($100,000 $28,000), the result will be much different than if the Roth IRA starts even with the traditional IRA at $100,000. In addition, if the $28,000 tax is paid from the amount being converted to a Roth IRA, then the 10 percent premature withdrawal penalty will apply to that amount. The 10 percent penalty does not
apply if the income tax liability associated with the conversion is paid from sources outside of the converted amount. If the tax is paid from the proceeds of the IRA being converted, a true apples-toapples comparison would start the Roth IRA at $72,000. However, if the assumption is made that the tax will be paid from some other source and the Roth IRA starts out at $100,000, the result will likely favor the Roth IRA. This is true even if a calculation is made to consider the opportunity cost of the dollars being used to pay the $28,000 tax due on the distribution from the original IRA. There are also several other considerations. The uncertainty of tax rates in the future makes this comparison increasingly complex. In addition, the age of the individual electing to convert from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is important because the advantage of taxfree distributions from the Roth IRA is leveraged by the length of time the dollars have to grow. The advantage of converting to a Roth IRA generally
VӖSTNÍK
decreases as the age of the individual increases. Another factor is that, while the individual is alive, the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules have no impact on a Roth IRA. In summary, there are many variables in the traditional vs. Roth equation that should be evaluated on a situational basis. There are no simple formulas that spell out a clear decision. An individual’s IRA strategy should be integrated with their overall financial and estate plan to achieve optimal results. For many people, the guidance of a professional financial advisor will be a critical aspect in making the decision that is right for them. Expression of Sympathy
SPJST Lodge 9, Snook officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of ALICE LIVELY, beloved wife of the late Everett Lively of Pasadena, Texas, who passed away following a short illness on Memorial Day, May 30, 2011. She was born Alice Mae Kovar on February 24, Alice Lively 1924, in Snook, Texas. The eldest of four daughters born to Czech parents, raised on a farm in Beasley, not speaking English until the first grade, she in turn became the cherished mother of six daughters, all who survive her. She also leaves nine grandchildren, who called her “Memo,” and
five sons-in-law. The future Mrs. Lively was a working girl in east Houston in January 1947 when she met her husband-tobe on a blind date. They were married seven months later and spent just short of 59 happy years together. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. Their first daughter, Kathleen, was born in July 1949. The other five, following in order, were Rebecca, Nancy, Robin, Terri, and Laura. All six are college graduates who have enjoyed and are enjoying happy, private, and professional lives. A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., June 18 in Pasadena Brethren Church. A memorial fund in her name is to be established in that church, which was so dear to Alice during her lifetime. The gifts will be accepted by Kathleen Lively, P.O. Box 13517, Arlington, Texas, 76094. Respectfully submitted, Ann Schoeneman —SPJST—

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth: summer filled with SPJST fun
Dear Vestnik Readers, I have had a summer filled with SPJST fun. It began with District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD). I placed with several of my entries and received a first place with my pie. Next, we attended camp. Although it was very hot, we still had a great time. My favorite part was the lake and the ropes course. We held our lodge picnic shortly after returning from camp, and our youth club helped serve food, held a raffle, sold 50/50 tickets, and had a bingo. Finally, I attended State YAD. I brought my first place district pie but did not place. Thanks to everyone who helped make all these activities possible. Sincerely, Bracy Craig —SPJST—

Tips to Start the School Year on the Right Track
(NewsUSA) - Back-to-school mayhem presents a number of challenges for parents. Each morning, there are breakfasts to make, lunches to pack, and extracurricular schedules to track — all while trying to get to work on time. So, how do you navigate the morning chaos and hold onto your sanity? With these helpful tips, you can make your back-to-school mornings easier:
1. Stick to a strict bedtime schedule. According to the Mayo Clinic, school-age children need 10-11 hours of sleep each night. Making
sure kids are well rested will help avoid oversleeping and wasted time getting them out of bed each morning. 2. Get prepared the night before. Pack all school bags as soon as homework is finished, and lay out school outfits prior to bedtime for the next day. This shortens the list of morning chores and adds a few extra minutes of rest. Also, don’t wait until early morning to pack a rushed lunch with little nutrition value. Preparing the night beforehand enables parents to pack food with nutrients and vitamins, not just potato chips and snack packs. For even better efficiency, plan lunches a week ahead. 3. Find a quick and balanced breakfast option. Not many parents have time for eggs and pancakes each morning, but there are quick, quality alternatives. Stock up on cereals that

kids will enjoy and are high in fiber, folic acid, iron, and vitamin C. Try Malt-O-Meal for family favorite varieties packed with whole grains. As an added bonus, Malt-O-Meal is available in resealable bags, which reduces the amount of packaging consumers have to dispose of or recycle by 75 percent. (BagTheBox.com) 4. Make a weekly calendar of activities. Organize each family member's schedule to make sure kids are where they need to be at the correct times. Between extracurricular activities, like sports, clubs, study groups, jobs and friends, it can be a challenge to establish any sort of routine. Set up car pools in case some events overlap. Input alerts in your phone, and set an alarm for each to avoid temporary mental lapses. —SPJST—

Prague’s famous astronomical clock stopped for three weeks for repairs
Prague’s famous astronomical clock known as the Orloj, dating back to 1410 and gracing the tower of the Old Town Hall, is one of the city’s biggest attractions, drawing crowds on the hour every single day. The chimes and a famous procession of apostles (moving sculptures) in the clock’s windows are a must for any visitor, and are no doubt the subject of countless youtube videos and family photos. But few months ago, it was turned off by technicians due to three weeks of building repairs.
What was being fixed? Above all, workers were redoing walls within the Old Town Hall tower to combat dampness which has an adverse affect on the famous clock. Karel Žbánek, of the clockworks company Ludvík Hainz, was in charge of the project.
“The main focus was the renovation of the walls inside the tower behind the clock both on the main floor as well as the space behind the mechanism. There was no way we could leave the clock in operation while renovation work was underway. For one, the masonry and clean up saw a lot of dust. And two, directly behind the clock, there is a system of weights which was dangerous to work under: conditions wouldn’t have met safety standards.”

Some observers complained it was poor timing to turn the Orloj off only shortly before the Easter holidays – a period when the number of tourists visiting the city was understandably high. But Karel Žbánek said when it came to the renovations, there were few better options:
damaged by a grenade explosion and repairs in 1945 and 1947 changed the motion of the rooster’s wings somewhat. The flapping became less visible and over time, and due to wear-andtear was completely imperceptible. We wanted to make the movement visible again so the whole experience would be more attractive.”
“We hoped to have the repairs completed by the 22nd of April which, if you looked at the calendar, was right before the holidays. We wanted to shorten the time by even a little bit, but a lot depended on the masons. We were aware it wasn’t ideal, but the problem was that because of the condition of the walls inside – you had to wait for the right atmospheric conditions. We could only begin then. Postponing the date wouldn’t have helped: it would have just pushed the work even further into the tourist season.”
— Jan Velinger
The repairs underway did not involve any external changes to the Orloj, save one: repairs to a mechanical golden rooster who shares the top of the clock’s facade with the apostles. Karel Žbánek again: “It is not so much a repair as it was a re-tuning. In 1945, the clock was
Legend has it that the stopping of the Orloj would herald a tragedy or catastrophe for the Czech lands, something that specialists like Mr. Žbánek readily discounted. He and others pointed to the last time in 2005 when the Orloj was stopped for two months and ‘nothing happened’.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machann podal zprávu o poměrech na Texaské A and M universitě v College Station, Tx.

—SPJST—
