Thoughts and Prayers
The recent Texas wildfires have been absolutely devastating. I have
been keeping up with the latest fires and information mostly through social networking. Good usually comes out of bad, and it appears this is no exception. The outpouring of volunteerism, giving, and support from Texans across the state is amazing. From people volunteering their barns and pastures to house horses and other animals to the tremendous donations to the families who have lost their homes and more . . . this really makes me proud to be a Texan. To the ones affected by these fires, our thoughts and prayers are with you. To the firefighters and everyone else working to get these fires under control, thank you.
Potato Peeling Thanks to Lodge 6, Cottonwood for inviting David and me to its annual potato peeling party. Although I imagined it wasn’t going to be a party with 900 pounds of potatoes to peel, it was really fun after all! Everyone gathered at tables, and 10pound buckets of mostly-peeled potatoes (after being washed and sent through an automatic peeler) were presented to each table team every few minutes. The “potato peelers” cleaned up the potatoes and removed the remaining peeling—while visiting and sharing a great time. After peeling, the potatoes headed over to the cutting/slicing table before being stored in the coolers. Another team came in very early on Saturday morning to begin cooking for the day’s food sales. Lodge 6’s booth at Westfest included a very delicious sausage/sauerkraut/potatoes boat among other items. The cooking process was repeated early Sunday morning, too. And, besides the friendliness and camaraderie at Lodge 6, the “potato
peelers” were rewarded with a most tasty and plentiful dinner prepared by Barbara Jean Hykel and crew. It was a wonderful way to spend a Friday evening. Thanks, Lodge 6, for the invitation and for all of your hard work with planning, preparing, and running the booth serving authentic Czech food at Westfest. You are to be commended. Excellent job!
Westfest Parade Saturday morning was the Westfest parade. The Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon, Theodore, and the Chipettes) on the SPJST Float were transformed into the Czechmunks! And, our float won first place! Thanks, Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club members and adults for your enthusiasm on the float. The State Royalty also waved and handed out candy through the parade. I think every State King and State Queen in the past several years has run out of candy before we even got to Main Street! But, King Robert and Queen Alyssa allocated their candy and had enough for the entire parade route. Way to go! I was equally impressed at all of the little girls shouting to Queen Alyssa: “Wow - look at the beautiful princess.” How sweet.
Don’t Forget Your Anniversary Bob forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was mad. She told him, “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in six seconds. And, it better be there!” The next morning when his wife woke up, she looked out the window to find a box—gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday! —SPJST—

Member shares fond SPJST, Vestnik memories
Dear SPJST Brothers and Sisters, Ahoj! I want to let you all know why I am happy and proud each time I get a new Vestnik. For those of you who don’t know, I have family ties to the Vestnik. My sister, Katherine Morris, works with our Editor, Melanie Zavodny, to bring us the Vestnik each week. Additionally, My father, the late Nick A. Morris, served as Vestnik Editor for nearly seven years. Even though I wasn’t born until my family moved to the Temple area when dad became SPJST Supreme Lodge President in 1968, I have a real affinity and connection to the town of West (where the Vestnik was published during that time). Even today, I love meeting folks who knew my family back then and getting to hear their recollections and stories. This past Labor Day weekend, I attended my 24th consecutive Westfest. My first trip to Westfest was in 1987 when I represented SPJST as the recently-crowned State King in the Westfest parade. And, I haven’t missed a Westfest since! Ironically, I got to watch my first Westfest parade this year from the sidewalk in the shade of the awning of the old SPJST print shop, located on the corner of Reagan and Oak Streets in West. What a treat it was getting to view the festivities from where dad worked for
many years! I felt real pride watching the SPJST representatives roll by in, and on, the various vehicles and floats that were in the parade, especially when the current State Royalty Court came riding by. Not only because it brought back many fond memories, but also because I got to witness our District Two Queen (and one of my favorite “students”), Miss Alyssa Torres, come riding by. I look forward to seeing some of the Westfest pictures in the Vestnik. I would also like to say how pleased I am to see that the official newspaper of the SPJST - an organization founded by Czech settlers to Texas - still makes the effort to solicit and publish Czech-related events, topics, fundraisers, festivals, stories, etc. I strongly feel that this is an area of the Vestnik that should be supported and expanded. I really enjoyed the recent articles on the “Four Corners of the Czech Republic.” Keep ’em coming! If you get the chance to meet Melanie, Katherine, or any of the Publication Committee in person, give them your thanks and support for continuing to provide us such an entertaining and informative weekly newsletter that we can all be proud of. I think they do a magnificent job putting it all together! Fraternally yours, Michael Morris Lodge 47, Seaton Hvezda Texasu —SPJST—

Lodge 13 Dime Box joins community for October 1 event
The Dime Box community is making plans to establish a Black Bridge Park featuring the bridge that spanned the railroad from 1912 until 1998. The bridge, also known as the Moses Bridge, destined to be sold for scrap, was “rescued” and moved to the SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box property, where it remains at this time. The community, under the leadership of the Dime Box Lions Club, wishes to develop plans to form a park and walking trail. To raise funds for this initiative, SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box is joining the Dime Box Lions Club and other community organizations in hosting the Dime Box Homecoming and Black Bridge Festival to be held each year on the first Saturday in October. The event, begun in 1974 as the Dime Box Mini Fair to help commemorate the Centennial celebration for Lee County, has been held annually by the community, though under various names. In 1978, the Mini Marathon was added and a few years later the Country Christmas was begun on the first Saturday in December. The Homecoming, Mini Marathon, and Country Christmas are being com-
bined to be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011. The event will feature the 34th annual Mini Marathon, second annual Dog Dash, barbecue cook-off, art fair, parade, craft and swap booths, food and drink booths, gospel singers, Spanish dancers, country store booths, live music, games, quilt display, washer tournament, bingo, Youth Horseless Playday and BlackBridge Blowout (14 and under), a classic car display, and lots more. All of these activities will be held in downtown Dime Box. Submitted by, Doris Ford —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin donates use of hall
On Friday August 19, 2011, SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin donated the use of its hall for a fundraiser. Sue Romine who lost her son is keeping his legend alive by continuing his mission. Derek would give his shoes to anyone who needed them. So when he lost his life at an early age, his mother decided to keep his memory by continuing his mission. This year, the group raised money that will be used in Elgin for students who need shoes. SPJST Lodge 18 was happy that we could assist in this project.

Welcome, District Seven State Field Rep Don Strickland!
Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and new District Seven State Field Representative Don Strickland look over recruiter cards at the Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway in August. “We welcome Don to the SPJST Insurance Department and are enjoying working with him,” Vice President McBride says. “Don can be reached at (979) 8208879 or email donj.spjst@gmail.com. Sales agents and members in District Seven are encouraged to give him a call for any and all SPJST life insurance assistance.”
Lodge 18 is proud to say that we have another fundraiser in October. We are in keeping that we are a fraternal organization here to assist in any way that we can. Elgin is very fortunate to have the SPJST hall. Elgin should be proud of its citizens. What a great turnout whenever there is a fundraiser or benefit, you do your part. We really need more active members in SPJST. Come to our meetings, and see what you can do. Tell us what we need to get more members interested. We have a small group that is very active. If you want changes, come to the meeting. Let us know your wishes. Remember, December is election time. If you are interested in helping, let us know. District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and wife Ruth were guests at our meeting. It’s always great to see you; you’re welcome anytime. We are looking forward to the October fest. Three great polka bands— Jodie Mikula, Leo Majek, and Fritz Hodde—will play. We hope to see you there. Then, in November, we have Fritz Hodde and Central Texas Sound. We have the Petersons still interested in giving dance lessons. Let me know, and I will arrange the lessons again. You know, one lesson is not enough. Dancing is a matter of practice, practice, and more practice, and
the best exercise you can get while having fun. “Happy birthday” was sung to Brandon Bowen, Mike Mogonye, and Jim Mogonye. Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important! Irene Vrabel, Reporter —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy
In Memoriam
Expression of Sympathy
The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook, wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the family of ALVIN JOHN KRENEK, age 70, of Brenham, husband of Joyce (Mueller) Krenek, who departed his earthly home and went to join the Lord on Friday, August 26, 2011, after suffering a cranial hemorrhage on August 23. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Alvin Krenek August 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father David Ivey, Officiant. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery. The family received friends and relatives Monday evening, August 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel with a rosary held from 7:30 to 8 p.m. Alvin was born in Brenham on November 3, 1940, to John and Annie Shupak Krenek. He was baptized and received his First Holy Communion and Confirmation in the Catholic Faith. A faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Alvin was a graduate of Snook High School and served in the United States Army Reserves. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook. On October 27, 1962, Alvin married the love of his life, Joyce Mueller. For the next 49 years of their life together, they remained best friends, as well as parents and business partners. Alvin and Joyce had three children Aaron, Julie and Alan. Since 1972, Alvin was the owner and operator of Krenek’s Tractor Repair and Wrecker Service. Alvin’s business was his driving force, and he truly loved to wake up each day and do his job. Alvin regarded his employees as his family, and he counted his customers as true friends. Alvin was rarely seen without his faithful canine companion Appollo. You never saw one without the other.
His passions were tractors, wreckers, cattle, gardening, and spending time at his cherished farm in Snook. Alvin loved all that encompassed the farming and agricultural world. He lived to sell, repair, and talk tractors. Alvin Krenek was a loving husband, a doting and patient father and grandfather, and a constant friend to anyone he met. He had a huge compassionate heart, a quick wit, and a humorous story for anyone he came across. Alvin was a strong man with a gentle soul. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends, but his strong spirit will live on. Survivors include wife Joyce Krenek; sons Aaron Krenek and wife Carrie, and Alan Krenek; daughter Julie Krenek Shows and special friend Steven Gerik; grandchildren Bailey Krenek, Taylor Krenek, Ethan Shows, Shaye Shows, and Jetta Shows; mother-in-law Ora Nell Mueller; and sisters Josephine Pruett and Bettie Martine and husband Garland. Preceding him in death were his parents John and Annie Krenek; father-in-law Adolph Mueller; and brother-in-law Terry Pruett. Serving as pallbearers were John Pruett, Steve Pruett, Michael Pruett, Misael Espinoza, Isaias Espinoza, Salvador Aguliera, and Maceo Moore. Honorary pallbearers included Edward and Lillian Kwiatkowski, Gale, Ted, and Shirley Kwiatkowski, Donnie and Laurece Maresh, Grace Bentke, Aneva Rogus, Elroy and Carolyn Loesch, Douglas and Marilyn Heckman, Pat Maas, Betty and Perry Thomas, Gus and Shirley Giese, and their many customers and friends. The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to True Blue Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 1107, Brenham, Texas 77834; Brenham Animal Shelter; or to any favorite charity. Stop bullying before it starts
(NewsUSA) - What’s the best way to stop a bully? Don’t let him (or her) become one. Multiple studies have shown that teaching children positive social skills and taking proactive steps to prevent and discourage delinquent behavior can go a long way toward preventing bullying and providing a more effective learning environment. Unfortunately, childhood bullying has become a 24/7 problem, and the anonymity of the Internet makes it more difficult to identify and punish bullies. But programs in which schools and the community work together to prevent bullying and reduce disruptive behavior can make a difference. The benefits of bullying prevention programs include freeing teachers to teach, instead of spending their time disciplining students. These programs also cut down on chaos in the classroom and foster a positive learning environment. Michelle Molina, president and CEO of PeaceBuilders says that “Children need to be given the skills so they can solve these problems and adults need to be the guides on the sides.” According to the nonprofit organization Child Trends, PeaceBuilders has been found to work in increasing conflict resolution skills and reducing aggression and bullying. PeaceBuilders is a program de-
VӖSTNÍK
signed to foster a positive environment not only in schools, but at home and in the community. The program is already in place in thousands of schools across the United States, where it is successfully used to prevent and decrease bullying and other disruptive behavior. PeaceBuilders is designed to combat bullying early through a combination of school-based programs, parent training and community outreach. Parents are a critical part of the program, ensuring that practices are duplicated at home. The PeaceBuilders program can be tailored to ages and developmental levels from preschool through high school. The program works by first identifying risk factors for bullying, including violent or aggressive behavior, drug use and tobacco use. PeaceBuilders provides tools to foster civil behavior and to discourage disruptive behavior. Then a roadmap is created that includes regularly praising children and teens for good behavior at school and at home, while discouraging bad behavior. Involving parents in the behavior improvement before adolescence helps communities create a way of life that encourages people to be nicer to each other. Začli se mnou čerti šít
Welcome to SoundCzech, the programme in which you can learn Czech through song lyrics. This week we’ll be looking at a song all too familiar to yours truly – “Dominiku” - it is originally a French song, but the Czech version was famously sung by Judita Čeřovská in 1964. The phrase to look out for is začli se mnou čerti šít.
The song’s chorus is the same throughout the song. Dominiku, ty jsi sám jak poustevník — which means “Dominik, you are alone like a hermit.” – poustevník is the Czech word for hermit. Já hříšnou duši mám. – a hřích is a sin and duše means soul so its “I have a sinful soul.” Můžeš zázrak udělat, když mě budeš míti rád, peklo, ďábla překonám — “You can make a miracle if you will like me, and I will overcome both hell and the devil.” Peklo is hell and ďábel is a devil.
Plnovous měl jako svatý, začli se mnou čerti šít, jaká by to krása byla, kdyby mě chtěl políbit. This means “He had a beard as full as a saint, the devil has started to make me fidget, how beautiful it would be if he wanted to kiss me.” Certainly an unusual sentence.

The word šít can also mean to sew, but in this case, its second meaning is used – to fidget. There is also a difference between ďábel, meaning devil and čert which is also a devil, but more in the fairytale sense. That’s all for today’s SoundCzech. See you next time. — Dominik Jůn

We celebrate Czechoslovak State Independence Day (Den vzniku samostatného československého státu). The date of the founding of Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, Silesia) and its Declaration of Independence of the First Republic from the Hapsburg Empire is October 28, 1918, at end of World War I. In the week of November 17, we commemorate the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia with a program regarding those 10 most eventful days that fell between November 17 and 27, 1989, when on that first day a peaceful student demonstration to commemorate International Students’ Day ended in violence. From that revolution, one of the most important developments was the establishment of the Civic Forum by Vaclav Havel, the country’s first President of the Second Republic. October is Czech Heritage Month!
Texas Czech Heritage Month is October 1 through 31. All Czech Texans are encouraged to participate in this month-long commemorate. As we are celebrating, we are remembering the past and our ancestors who were proud enough to stand up for what they believed in and loved. The purpose of this event is to preserve and promote the many contributions made by Czech immigrants and Czech Texans, and to honor our ancestors. The Legislature of Texas passed a resolution, signed by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, designating the month of October to be celebrated annually as “Texas Czech Heritage Month.” The idea for the resolution was introduced by Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka of La Grange. The TravisWilliamson Czech Heritage Society,

during the presidency of Dr. Dorothy Bohac, was instrumental in having the resolution passed. The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance— Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918. This special month of October of each year will give us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas: Speak with school superintendents and principals informing them of Czech Heritage Month. Suggest that aspects of Czech culture be included in the curriculum.
Paint or sketch posters or cut out illustrations of the Czech Republic and display them in classrooms, halls, libraries, downtown shops, malls, and bulletin boards.
Display the Czech Republic flag with the U.S.A. and Texas flags whenever possible.
Page 27
Ask students to write article about the Czech Republic, “What Czech Heritage Means to Me,” or about Czech-Americans living in Texas Teach students greetings in Czech: Ahoj, Dobry den, Na shledanou, Nazdar, and Vitame vas.
Adopt a school in the Czech Republic. Find pen pals in the Czech Republic.
Make a collection of short resumes and photos on persons of Czech ancestry who were in various professions, such as engineers, geologists, lawyers, nurses, sports, musicians and singers, etc.
Teach children a Czech song or a short dance routine. Play a video or cassette featuring “Annie in the Cabbage Patch,” “Red Handker-

chief Round You Go,” or “The Beseda.” Ask students to participate in dancing.
Develop a family tree. Distribute generation charts to students to take home and trace their roots for future descendants. Eight volumes of passenger lists compiled by Leo Baca have listings of passengers, ports of entry and names of ships on which they sailed. Take trips to Czech museums such as the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Caldwell Czech Heritage Museum, Dallas Czech Club Museum, Sokol Collection in Ennis, Fayetteville Museum, and the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio.
Present Czech programs, music and singing of Czech songs at nursing homes, retirement homes, hospitals and veterans’ hospitals. You can provide this during meal time in the dining room or lobby. Feature singing and Czech music at shopping centers to make people aware of Czech Heritage Month. Share your travel experiences in the Czech Republic and items of interest from there.
Restaurants: Feature a Czech menu during Czech month. Add a little something to a hamburger and call it Czech-a-burger.
Ask the mayor of your city to issue a proclamation. Display a marquee sign, “Czech Heritage Month.”
Newspaper media: Submit Czech recipes during that month. Ask a news reporter to interview some
27
early settlers in Texas. Submit an article on Czech notables such as Jan Komensky, father of Education, or Vaclav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic. Write an article about Czech composers: Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana, Leos Janacek or Jaromir Vejvoda, composer of Skoda Lasky. Write an article on the Czech national anthem, Kde Domov Muj? (Where is My Home?). Publish the anthem in English and Czech.
Radio: Contact radio stations about placing special emphasis on Czech music and programs.
Television: Set up interviews early with exchange students from Czech Republic or any person visiting from there.
Give special recognition to the oldest lady or gentleman of Czech descent in your city; write their profile and have it published. Have children tape record an interview with their grandparents or great-grandparents.
Plant a tree—oak (dub) or linden (lipa) or a rosebush. These grow in the Czech Republic.
Churches: Place an announcement about Czech Heritage Month in the church bulletin; offer a special prayer for all Czech ancestors; celebrate a polka mass and the singing of Czech songs. Book marks: Have some printed with Czech Heritage Month in Texas on one side and a business advertisement on the other side.
Distribute flyers which point out historical markers or important places and persons.

It is important that every ethnic group hold an annual commemorative day. If we learn about other ethnic cultures and they learn about ours, it will help us to get along better in this world.

Delicious recipes (Oh, and they’re vegan)
By Fiona Gaze • August 5, 2011
People often joke about how difficult it is to be a vegetarian in Prague, but if that’s the case, it must seem even harder to be a vegan here in meat lover’s paradise. Thankfully, times are changing, dining and shopping options are expanding, and now, thanks to Prague-based writer Martina Čermáková, there’s a new cookbook available, based entirely on the premise of cooking vegan-friendly meals with ingredients that can be found at local shops and markets. Veg mňamky: Nejen pro vegan(k)y is a colorful, inspired and mouth-watering collection of Martina’s favorite recipes. While the book is currently only available in Czech, an English-lan-
guage version may be in the works. In addition to having just published the cookbook, Martina’s also opening up a imported-sweet shop in September, called The Candy Store, which will be at Na Rybníčku 5 in New Town. I spoke with her recently about the inspiration behind the book, and asked if she’d share a recipe with us, which she kindly does, below: a recipe for bean burgers.
Bean Burgers
Veggie burgers are great for exercising imagination. Play around with different types of beans and spices! What you’ll need:

Preheat oil on medium-high heat. Add garlic and onion and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the bell pepper and cook until tender. Add paprika, cumin, salt and pep-

Add the bread crumbs, ketchup, soy sauce, and combine well. Knead with your hand until the mixture is firm. Divide the mixture into about five pieces and roll each into a ball. Life Insurance: Now More Than Ever What a turbulent few years it’s been. Even as the Great Recession has eased, many of us are still trying to get back on solid financial footing. For some, the recovery hasn’t amounted to much. The employment market is still weak and home prices continue to fall. Gas prices are high and consumer confidence is low. Through it all, one source of financial security has remained strong, however, and that’s life insurance.
A Financial Product That Has Held its Value While so many aspects of people’s financial lives have been shaken, life insurance continues to do exactly what it was designed to—serve as the foundation of a family’s financial security. If you own a term life policy, the death benefit has remained the same through the ups and downs of the economy. Owners of whole life insurance have seen their cash values rise when the value of many of their other financial assets have slipped. As the tumultuous experience of the last few years has demonstrated, life insurance is one of the few things that provides certainty in uncertain times.
Make Sure Your Family Is Protected You may be feeling less financially secure than before the Great Recession began. Your retirement accounts may have rebounded, but you may have been forced to sell your home at a loss. You may have found a new job, but at a lower salary. Some days you might feel like it’s all you can do to put food on the table and keep a roof over your head. But what if you died tomorrow? No one wants to think in those terms, but given that many of us are in the financial rebuilding stage, you need to ask yourself, “Would my family be OK financially without me in the picture?” Life insurance is one of the few guarantees your family could rely on to maintain their quality of life. As difficult as it may seem to look beyond the bills due at the end of the month, you should make it a priority to either maintain your current life insurance or purchase a policy if you don’t have one. It will provide an anchor of stability for your family finances, ensuring that your loved ones will be financially secure when you die.
Start Here—Now If you’re not sure where to start, the nonprofit LIFE Foundation offers an online Life Insurance Needs Calculator at www.lifehappens.org/calculator, which will provide you with a general sense of your life insurance needs. Then consult a qualified life insurance professional for help determining the right solution for your specific needs. Do it today—your family’s financial future is too important to leave to chance.
