Stay tuned to the Vestnik for ordering information, and be sure to order early to ensure that you will receive a copy! And, 100th anniversary cookbooks that were originally published in 1997, are available for $13. Mail a check to Susan at the Home Office. Annual Dates Needed for 2012 Calendar Districts, lodges, and youth clubs are encouraged to send in important dates for the 2012 SPJST Calendar. Deadline to submit dates is October 1. Great Job, Lodge 48! David and I attended Lodge 48, Beyersville’s fundraiser on Saturday, September 10. The hall was overflowing with many excited people. After a delicious dinner, the evening included an auction with more than 100 items. Wow! Keep up the good work, Lodge 48!
Thanks, Joe and Margaret! Special thanks to Joe Klecka of Lodge 84, Dallas for sharing a few chapters of Vlčnovská jízda kralů by Josef Beneš with us. This is a children’s book that is written in Czech. Joe’s wife Margaret purchased on her recent trip to the Czech Republic. I wish we could reprint some of these chapters, but due to copyright, we cannot. An online search of Vlčnovská jízda kralů by Josef Beneš yields many beautiful, colorful photos from the Czech Republic.
Brain Age Thanks to Mark and Virginia Rebecek of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi for sharing a link to “Brain Age” — http://www.freebrainagegames.com. You can measure your brain age in two minutes by playing some fun (and challenging!) games. If your final score is younger than your actual age, then you are doing enough brain exercise for your brain, if you score higher than your age, then you need to exercise your brain more.
Prague Virtual Tour I received a link to an interesting Web site from Franklin Bravenec. It has tours of many cities around the world, including Prague, Czech Republic. The Prague tour is about 10 minutes long. Czech it out at http://www.jcdurand.ca/Monde/Mon de.html.

Lodge 13 Dime Box joins community for October 1 event
The Dime Box community is making plans to establish a Black Bridge Park featuring the bridge that spanned the railroad from 1912 until 1998. The bridge, also known as the Moses Bridge, destined to be sold for scrap, was “rescued” and moved to the SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box property, where it remains at this time. The community, under the leadership of the Dime Box Lions Club, wishes to develop plans to form a park and walking trail. To raise funds for this initiative, SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box is joining the Dime Box Lions Club and other community organizations in hosting the Dime Box Homecoming and Black Bridge Festival to be held each year on the first Saturday in October. The event, begun in 1974 as the Dime Box Mini Fair to help commemorate the Centennial celebration for Lee County, has been held annually by the community, though under various names. In 1978, the Mini Marathon was added and a few years later the Country Christmas was begun on the first Saturday in December. The Homecoming, Mini Marathon, and Country Christmas are being combined to be held on Saturday, October
1, 2011. The event will feature the 34th annual Mini Marathon, second annual Dog Dash, barbecue cook-off, art fair, parade, craft and swap booths, food and drink booths, gospel singers, Spanish dancers, country store booths, live music, games, quilt display, washer tournament, bingo, Youth Horseless Playday and BlackBridge Blowout (14 and under), a classic car display, and lots more. All of these activities will be held in downtown Dime Box. Submitted by, Doris Ford —SPJST—

dark dense clouds roll in with a remembered look circling round us, invading our sterile sky, giving us a promise a few drops that quickly dry before they hit the ground
It wants so hard to rain these unfamiliar clouds still timid hesitant as if they are not sure
People stare out of windows stand in doorways crossing themselves crossing their fingers afraid to speak the word less rain be scared away It’s been so long since blue was seen this terrible summer made our sky white hot in heat so white we could not look at it
At last it’s changed its hue there is a softness to it now a certain coolness in its touch
What are the chances rain will finally come we try to coax the clouds beg them to release let go
They want to desperately, they want so hard to rain but they’ve forgotten how. —SPJST—

associations, each devoted to helping educate the public about the importance of having adequate life insurance protection. “As difficult as it may be for people to think beyond their most immediate financial priorities, the need for planning ahead with life insurance is more important than ever,” said Marvin H. Feldman, CLU, ChFC, RFC, president and CEO of LIFE. “Too many Americans are just one illness or accident away from leaving their loved ones in a terrible financial situation, so we hope that September is the time when they put aside any excuses and finally take stock of their life insurance needs.”
NBA Champion Lamar Odom Headlines the Industry’s Awareness-Building Efforts For its part in Life Insurance Awareness Month, LIFE is spearheading a number of initiatives to raise awareness and educate the public throughout September. Basketball and reality TV star, Lamar Odom, is this year’s national campaign spokesperson and is sharing his personal story of loss through television and radio public service announcements (PSAs) airing throughout the rest of the year. Lamar was raised in a single-parent household and lost his mother, Cathy, to colon cancer when he was 12 years old. In his PSAs, Lamar explains how life insurance gave him the foundation to move on in his life and kept his future plans on track. Lamar’s 60-second television PSA can be viewed at www.lifehappens.org/lamar-video.
Stories of Everyday Families Are Being Featured Nationally Too In addition to publicizing Lamar’s story nationally, LIFE is continuing its long-standing tradition of publicly sharing stories of everyday families who have suffered loss and have experienced first-hand the benefits of life insurance. Chosen by an independent judging panel as part of LIFE’s annual realLIFEstories Client Service Award Program, this year’s featured stories are appearing nationally in the September 2011 issues of Parents and O magazines, on newsstands now.

Picture Mosaic Encourages Americans to Insure Their Love To help get the word out through social media, LIFE has created a new Facebook application to celebrate those who have made the decision to protect their loved ones by owning life insurance. Available through LIFE’s Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/lifehappens.org), the Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic will eventually feature thousands of photos of families and individuals whose financial well-being is safeguarded by life insurance. For every picture that gets uploaded to the mosaic, $1 will be donated to the LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program, which provides tuition assistance for students who have lost a parent and are struggling to realize their dream of a college education.

Three Simple Steps for Making a Smart Life Insurance Decision To help Americans assess their life insurance needs, LIFE offers three simple steps:
• Step 1: Get a sense of how much life insurance you need – Determine how much money your family will need to cover immediate expenses and how much they will need over the long-term to maintain their standard of living. To figure out the right amount of coverage to fit your needs, begin by thinking about everyone who depends on you financially, including your spouse, children, parents or other loved ones. For help getting started, visit the insurance needs calculator on LIFE’s website at www.lifehappens.org/howmuch.
• Step 2: Educate yourself about the different kinds of coverage available –

with a fundamental financial tool—life insurance. Life insurance should serve as the foundation of your family’s financial security, helping to ensure that your loved ones will be alright financially even if something were to happen to you.
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, the perfect time to think about all the wondrous things that life insurance can do for you and your family. But that can only happen if you’ve done the proper planning. So don’t wait another minute. Schedule time to meet with an insurance professional in your community or your benefits manager at work to make sure that you have the right amount and type of insurance to protect the ones you love.
5. Creates opportunities Can provide funding to start a business, or pay for schooling so surviving family members can train for a new career.
6. Funds the future Offers a way to fund longer-range goals like a college education for the kids or a secure retirement for a surviving spouse.
7. Leaves a legacy Gives parents the chance to leave future generations with the legacy of long-term financial security.

Life insurance policies exist for virtually every need and budget. Determining the type that suits you best depends on a number of factors, such as how long you need coverage, how much you can afford, how much risk you can tolerate and how much flexibility you need. Evaluate the different types of coverage available, including term and permanent policies, by using LIFE’s interactive product selector at www.lifehappens.org/whatkind. • Step 3: Don’t go it alone – Life insurance is one product where an expert’s opinion can make all the difference. Once you’ve established some of the basics, work with an insurance agent or other financial advisor you trust who can conduct a thorough needs analysis to ensure that all of your needs will be met. One way to find a good insurance agent is through recommendations from friends and family. You can also search a listing of qualified insurance professionals in your community using LIFE’s agent locator at www.lifehappens.org/agentlocator.
About Life Insurance Awareness Month Life Insurance Awareness Month was created by the LIFE Foundation in 2004 in response to growing concern about the large number of Americans who lack adequate life insurance protection. According to the industry research group LIMRA, 30 percent of households (35 million) have no life insurance coverage, and most people with coverage have far less than most experts recommend. Held each September, Life Insurance Awareness Month is an industry-wide effort involving hundreds of leading companies and thousands of insurance advisors. About LIFE The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE) was founded in 1994 in response to the public’s growing need for information and education on life, health, disability and long-term care insurance. LIFE also seeks to remind people of the important role insurance professionals perform in helping families, businesses and individuals find the insurance solutions that best fit their needs. were very excited to receive the pull tabs and that for every pound of pull tabs donated, it credited their account $750 for treatments. I think everyone was touched and excited to be able to help a sick child and his family through such a hard time. We also collected some supplies to donate to the fire victims of Bastrop. We had several youth members as well as some members from the mother lodge bring in items to donate. All in all, we have been very supportive in our community in the last couple of months, and I am happy that this group is so aware. Several important things were discussed starting with the upcoming Outdoor Extravaganza on Saturday, September 17 at Star Hall. Hope everyone will come out for an enjoyable evening. There are lots of great prizes for the young and the old. This is a family activity. Some of the funds raised at the Extravaganza will be used to set up a scholarship fund for all active Lodge 47 youth members. The very next day will be the District Two Fall Meeting to be held at Flag Hall in Cyclone. Registration is at 1 p.m., and the meeting will start at 2 p.m. Don’t forget your Christmas ornaments! The question came up about how many youth members had visited or toured the new Czech Heritage Museum, and the hand count was very low. So since October is Czech Heritage Month, we decided that a trip to the museum would be an ideal social. The discussed date is October 22 which is also Make a Difference Day. It was discussed that the youth club will sponsor a clothing/food drive on this day as well. Youth members have been asked to donate blankets, jackets, socks, and canned food for a local pantry. We will ask others to donate as well to celebrate

Simple projects to celebrate autumn
(MS) — As leaves turn and the fall weather cools, nature becomes a playground for imagination with its deep reds, oranges, yellows. And, of course, many children start planning their costumes early, using every excuse to dress up before Halloween actually rolls around. With these quick and easy craft projects, the whole family can enjoy celebrating one of the most colorful seasons of the year. Leaf Book Craft: With a few easy-tofind supplies, you and your kids can preserve the riches of cheerful outdoor foliage with this handmade leaf book that can be pulled out again and again over dreary winter days.
What you’ll need: - Bag to collect leaves - Clear contact paper - Ruler - Scissors - Construction Paper - Stapler or Hole Punch and Twine - Glue Stick (optional)
Page 15
Instructions: Collect colorful leaves in a bag and spread them on a newspaper when you get home. Place your favorite leaves on the contact paper, peeling the back off of one piece of the paper. After you carefully arrange the leaves, peel the back off the second piece of contact paper and carefully lay it on top of the first piece. You may need to use the ruler to push out any air bubbles that come up. Repeat these steps as many times as you like to make multiple pages. Take two pieces of construction paper, placing one on top of the stack of leaf pages and one on the bottom. Staple the sheets together on the left side to make a book or punch two to three holes and tie the pages together with twine for an outdoorsy look. Take any additional craft items such as glitter, markers or crayons and make a colorful design on the front to complete your book. Costume Creations: Halloween is in the air and with it every costume you can imagine. With these paper costume designs based on the characters of the best-selling book The Costume Trunk from Paddywhack Lane, children can play dress-up every day this fall.
What you’ll need: - Cardstock paper - Scissors - Markers - Crayons - Glue (non-toxic) - Tape - Ribbon - Yarn - Glitter - Newspaper
Wednesday, September 21, 2011
Instructions: Download the various costume designs from www.paddywhacklane.com, including a Princess Crown and Wand, Bumble Bee wings, and a Pirate’s Hat. Print out the designs on your cardstock paper. Lay out newspaper on your kitchen or dining room table to help keep messes to a minimum. Using all of your markers, crayons, and glitter, have your child personalize each costume piece. When finished and dry, follow the instructions on each design to create the finished look. Each costume piece is sized to match that of a child ages 3 to 7. Balloon Ghost: This adorable and easy ghost craft is perfect for Halloween decor in your home.
What you’ll need: - 1 White latex balloon per ghost - Scissors - 2 white grocery bags per ghost - Tape - Black marker
Instructions: Cut the handles off the white plastic grocery bags. Leaving the seam at the bottom of the bags together, cut the bags into strips. Blow up a white balloon. (For home decorating purposes, you might want to pick up helium balloons at the party store so they fly). Tape the two plastic bags around the end of the balloon, leaving a few inches at the bottom, leaving the tied section of the balloon at the top if you blew it up yourself. (If you purchased helium balloons, keep the tied side down). Using the black marker, draw two eyes and a mouth on the balloon, making any face you wish. If you blew up the balloon yourself, tie a string to the top and hang from the ceiling or mantle. If you used a helium balloon, tie a string to the bottom and let it float through the air. —SPJST—
Scenes from Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club’s August Activities
The Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club was very busy in August. Our annual spaghetti dinner/bingo fundraiser was on August 4, 2011. All of the youth helped Youth Leader Bessie Petr prepare the delicious meal. We donated school supplies for our community
service project. Each member had the opportunity to help with calling bingo numbers. It was a lot of fun and a huge success. Princess Ball was on August 20. We decorated the lodge hall with a Mardi Gras theme. The kitchen was selling
hamburgers, klobase sandwiches, and nachos. At the end of the night, it was time for the crowning of royalty. The new king is Scott Cowan, and I, Melinda McClellan, am the new queen. I am extremely excited to represent Lodge 84.

Czech Heritage Museum: old quilts needed
In January 2012, the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple is joining with six other museums in Bell County to have a countywide quilt show, The Great Bell County Quilt Crawl. Each museum will have its own display in their facility and one on Saturday between January 14 thru February 18 will host an event at their museum. There will be a lot of publicity and activity surrounding the quilt crawl. The Czech Heritage Museum has several wonderful quilts in their collection and will have those on display, as well as narratives about each one. Our goal is to fill the museum with wonderful quilts and stories. We are looking for quilts to borrow from December 15, 2011 thru March 1, 2012. If you have a special quilt that you would be willing to lend the museum, please contact the museum (254) 8992935. Submitted by, Sandi Wicker CHMGC Executive Director Lodge 80, Holland —SPJST—

Hey, Don’t Brag!
Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech language series which looks at popular Czech sayings through song lyrics. The expression in today’s episode is Hele, nemachruj - Hey, don’t brag - featured in a song of the same name by1980s Czech pop icon Michal David.

want to cut someone down to size, is nevytahuj se, which also means don’t brag.
There’s a world of difference, of course, between some who’s showing off a little bit or bragging – dělat machra – and someone who is telling tall tales, making big claims or trying to pull a fast one. If you tell someone nemachruj, it’s in jest, it’s a friendly nudge, but if someone is talking nonsense or worse, tries to pull the wool over your eyes, you’d say something a little different.
To vykládej tvé babičce, go tell such that to your Gran; or, to ti nezbaštím, don’t take me for a sucker (I won’t ‘swallow’ – nezbaštím - that story); or, to vykládej někomu jinému, go tell that to somebody else. That’s how you might react if someone is talking nonsense, trying to gain an advantage, i.e., trying to sell you concert tickets for more than they’re worth or some such scam. Far removed, though, from nemachruj.
I’ve heard people use the expression hele, nemachruj fairly often, mostly in groups where girls cut their boyfriends down just a little bit, or among friends where someone such as a natural leader oversteps his or her bounds just a little.

TCGS military wall of honor to be displayed at SPJST Home Office
In 2009, Texas Czech Genealogical Society began collecting photos of Czech soldiers who had served time in the military. The plan was to display the photos on a wall at its March 2010 meeting, “Let Freedom Ring,” at which time tribute would be paid to our Czech Veterans from all over the world. By January 2010, hundreds of pictures had arrived, and it was evident that a rather large wall on which to display them would be needed. Leroy Hurta put his engineering degree to work, designing and building the structure, while TCGS Chaplain and Wall of Honor Chairman Reverend John Gantt used his artistic talents to design the covering. Once completed, the awesome display was over 40 feet long and eight feet tall. The magnitude of information brought tears to many eyes during the special tribute event. Due to the generous offer of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, this amazing Wall of Honor, which pays tribute to hundreds of Czech Veterans, will now be permanently displayed at the SPJST Home Office, along with a Veterans’ Museum, which TCGS will also create and maintain.

Because of this wonderful opportunity extended to TCGS, space now allows us to add many more additional photos. It is our wish to honor all Czech Veterans who have served their country, either in peacetime or during wartime, in the military of the United States, the Czech Republic, or the former lands of Czechoslovakia, by having their photos displayed on the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor. We invite everyone to submit photos of your family members or friends for inclusion on the Wall. Black and white or color photos may be of any size. Be sure to submit only brief information concerning the Veteran (name, rank, military branch, date of birth, and/or death). All submittals should be sent to John Gantt, 3807 Kelli Lane, Bryan, Texas 77802, or emailed to John Gantt at john.gantt@gmail.com . Please do not send original photos, as they cannot be returned. The wall and museum are currently being set up. Watch the Vestnik for an opening date. Submitted by, Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—
