Correction Please note that the Lodge 80, Holland article on page 18 of the September 14, 2011, Vestnik listed an incorrect donation amount. We regret the error. The corrected paragraph is: Joann Mazoch has asked for a $25 donation for cheerleading. It was approved in a motion by Connie Horak, seconded by Coleman Benner.
Lodge 177, Academy Cares Hats off to Lodge 177, Academy for its $12,000 donation to six local volunteer fire departments ($2,000 each). What an amazing contribution to these organizations who have been working extra hard lately fighting many wildfires in the Central Texas area. Thanks, Lodge 177, for recognizing and supporting these volunteers. This Week’s Vestnik This week’s Vestnik is being finished in Denver, Colorado, between meetings and sessions at the Ameri-
can Fraternal Alliance annual meeting. It’s been a great meeting with lots of networking and learning opportunities. It is a great experience to visit with other editors and managers who work in the fraternal communications field.

This Week’s Funny An 80-year-old lady was marrying for the fourth time. A newspaper reporter asked if she would mind talking about her husbands and what they did for a living. She smiled and said, “My first husband was a banker. Then, I married a circus ringmaster. Next was a preacher and now in my 80s, a funeral director. When asked why the four men had such diverse careers. She explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go! —SPJST—

October Fraternal Updates
Fall Meetings Most district fall fun days have already been held. Reports from members who attended have all been very favorable. From reports, the host lodges have done an excellent job hosting these fun days. Thanks for all the hard work members have put into making these successful and fun. Two will be coming up in the month of October. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. All business is typically limited to timely or emergency issues. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, renew old acquaintances, and make new ones! Dates for the remaining fall fun days are: District Three—Sunday, October 23 hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood District Six—Sunday, October 23 hosted by Lodge 4, Hallettsville
100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Starts October 1 Spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which will benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2012.
Temple Area Concert to Benefit Fort Hood Memorial On Saturday, October 29, a concert by legendary country performer Johnny Lee will be held in Oscar, Texas, located six miles east of Temple to raise money for the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. Please see more information on page 10. In conjunction with this event, SPJST is hosting a silent auction. Accordingly, any individuals, lodges, or member businesses that would be willing to donate a silent auction item would be appreciated. Donors will be recognized for their support during the course of the evening. To donate an item to the silent auction — or if you have questions — please call Debbie Klinkovsky at the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-
7578. Debbie will be happy to visit with you and provide you with additional information on the event. November 5, 2011, marks the second anniversary since gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Thirteen people were killed, and 32 were wounded. Thanks to the heroic intervention of two Fort Hood police officers, the rampage was brought to an end. The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones or who had recently returned from them. In the aftermath of this tragic event, tributes were held to honor those who had died or who had been injured. From that initial outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event came the concept of establishing a permanent public and living memorial. The Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial will include a memorial pavilion and garden on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center to honor the victims and deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. The response to the memorial project has been gratifying. To date, more than $100,000 has been raised. Approximately $500,000 will be needed to bring the project to completion. Thanks to all of the SPJST members and lodges who have contributed to this fundraising effort. Your lodge will be recognized at the SPJST Awards Banquet at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple on January 28, 2012.
Plan to Observe Czech Heritage Month October is “Czech Heritage Month.” That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good, traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST Cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 16. That is Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to Fair Park.
The SPJST Home Office will also help again with this year’s Heritage Day, and we invite you to come out for a good time.
Fraternalist of the Year Nominations Now is the time to be thinking about who your lodge will be nominating for consideration to be selected as SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year. The eligibility, description of the awards, and program procedure was mailed to all local lodge fraternal activities coordinators. Please review this before selecting your candidate. All information submitted pertaining to the nominee should cover activities for the past year only. Also, note the December 16 deadline. Should you have any questions, please feel free to call me or drop me an email. Cookbook Update Wow, what a response! The deadline for submitting recipes was September 1. Members submitted nearly 1,400 recipes for the cookbook. Editing and proofreading is currently underway, and final version will then be submitted to the publisher for printing. The new cookbook should be available around December 1. Remember, these make great Christmas gifts. SPJST State Bowling Tournament The SPJST State Bowling Tournament was held at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas, on September 17 to benefit the Czech Heritage Museum, the Education and Nature Center, and Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial. With 29 bowlers in attendance,

Parents must sign travel release forms. The kitchen is working at camp. We
are not sharing camp with another district. Our number of youth participation was so high that we get to have our own camp. Deadline for qualification is by the May meeting. Tom Weeks has ordered two vans for LIT Retreat. We need youth leaders to turn in their list of graduating high school seniors for the Youth Achievement Awards. This year, new forms will need to be completed for everyone to put in the packet. On camp forms, the date of last Tetanus shot is most important. All forms are due May 31. This includes all LIT paperwork, all YAD cards, and camp forms with shot records. District Three YAD is June 25 at Lodge 25, Ennis. We usually have three categories that change from yearto-year. New rules in the handbook include three big changes: Foods – pies (store bought pie crust or homemade; but identify on index card and list ingredients, if homemade); Constructed Items – Wood (not store bought); Photography – Sunrise/Sunset; no negatives; don’t need date but must be within past 12 months (honor system). New things that SYD Frank started include the first Monday of every month will be a call-in meeting to help out with missed meetings. Get phone number and password from your youth leader. The secretary and treasurer gave their reports and were accepted as read. President Williams explained that income for the month was exceptionally low due to three cancellations for rentals due to different reasons. In old business, President Williams didn’t get to provide us with a copy of the sketches/drawings for the master plan as he had planned due to problems with his computer. He will bring them later. In new business, some of the lodge members attended the District Two Fall Meeting held at Lodge 24, Cyclone. It was a nice, fun day, and the meal was delicious. We plan to support the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which we will do next month. President Williams stated that if we have any upcoming events that we would like published in the 2012 SPJST calendar, now is the time to send them to Melanie at the Home Office. A.W. Zajicek stated that he now has the paperwork ready for applying for the State of Texas Certificate of Formation document Form 202 and the IRS application for Tax Exempt Status Form 1023. We appreciated all his efforts so very much in getting this accomplished for us. We drew for door prizes. We had a nice assortment. We want to thank Marguerite Burtis Vogel for her nice donation of a large portion of these prizes. Frank Tomascik made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Lamerle Zajicek. Motion carried. Ladiesʼ Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
Fall is in the air, and the weather is a welcome relief from the blazing heat of summertime. It’s time for football, school festivals, a new pecan crop, and the State Fair of Texas. It’s time to sit outside and enjoy the squirrels gathering their winter stash of goodies. Our Ladies’ Circle meeting on September 13, 2011, was called to order with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance by the 40 members present. We were happy to see Monalee Hattendorf, Gloria Farek, and Joyce Tesar doing well after their recent health issues, and we missed those who were absent for various other reasons. As we were meeting, a call came in that Liz Howard was being taken to the hospital. We’re happy to report that she is fine after many tests were run. It was her 90th birthday, and we feel that isn’t quite the way to celebrate. Thanks to Mary Ann Krivanek for giving us words and thoughts to ponder. The reading for this day was entitled, “An Autumn Day.” On the business side, yours truly read the minutes which were corrected {gee, I thought I never made mistakes (smile)}, and Pauline Morbitzer gave an update on finances for the month. Unfinished business included final preparations for the cake walk to be held during the Heritage Day festivities. Also discussed was whether or not to have the November lunch catered or to go out to eat. Lucy Martinez made a motion that we have the lunch catered at the hall, and it was determined that a committee would get information on possible caterers. Also, last month I reported that the lunch would be in October but that was incorrect. It will take place in November. As so many of you know, we lost Joe Kozel recently. Discussion took place as to how to honor him appropriately. He was a very special individual who gave of himself and whom so many loved. We plan to honor the family’s wishes in that regard. We will hear him playing again someday — of that we are sure. Sunny Kercho, Alene Kercho, Betty Krenek, and Shirley Martin were our hostesses for the day and provided some really good meat loaf, sausage, and brisket. Everyone else brought such delicious side dishes. Not to brag, but we have the best cooks around on the north side of Fort Worth! That’s just a personal opinion — but it’s true.
Page 16
Members with September birthdays were serenaded, and their picture was taken. To those of you who were not there, a belated happy birthday to each of you. We missed you. Joyce Tesar, although recuperating from pneumonia, was preparing for the Heritage Day activities. She announced the schedule for the day and relinquished her bingo calling duties to Mary Ann Krivanek. Ladies who had signed up to bring baked goods for the cake walk were reminded to have their items delivered by 3 p.m. on Saturday. Cash donations were also received from those not able to participate by providing goodies. It was door prize time, and the winners were Carolyn Irby, Shirley Martin, Lucy Martinez, Alene Kercho, Catherine Ann Davis, Mary Ann Gibson, Theretta Praslicka, Lorinda Manasco, Linda Horner, and Patti Williams. Gosh, another big day for fun stuff! The meeting closed with a blessing, and lunch was served. Let’s go play bingo! See you in October. Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

November 5, 2011, marks the second anniversary since gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Thirteen people were killed, and 32 were wounded. Thanks to the heroic intervention of
two Fort Hood police officers, the rampage was brought to an end. “A Ja Sam” A Czech Tradition!
“The musical traditions of Czech Texans have long been considered one of the most important and lasting good wishes of Czech culture in the state,” says Brandy Schnautz in her definition of “Czech Music” which appears in The Handbook of Texas Online. She writes, “For Czechs in Texas, as in other places, folk music was an important part of their ethnic and national identity and of their daily lives. Not simply a form of entertainment to be passively enjoyed, it was an activity that invited everyone’s participation “Dances were first held among the immigrants in private houses, but once fraternal halls such as those belonging to the SPJST were built, largescale community dances on Saturday evenings or on special occasions became the norm. The usual entertainment for these occasions included ‘orchestras’ playing traditional Czech tunes, such as waltzes and polkas.” Of these tunes, one of the most popular and enduring has been “A Ja Sam.” Over the years many SPJST youth members have learned the Czech tune at the Leader-In-Training Retreat and District Camps. Thanks to Brother Alfred Vrazel of Vrazels Polka Band for sharing the words with us for this October project. (1)

SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club’s meeting was held on Sunday, September 11, 2011. President Shelby Lynn Rose presided over the meeting. There were 10 members and four adults present. Items discussed were encouraging everyone to wear their tee-shirts on the SPJST Float at the Burleson County Fair Parade; Christmas ornament event in October; and ways our youth club can volunteer in our community. Being Grandparents Day, members present worked on gifts for their grandparents. Congratulations to Kyle and Marina Brinkman. They were awarded “perfect attendance” in our youth club. Also a great job to Shelby Lynn Rose on her Flag Day essay. Our next meeting will be held on October 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the SPJST hall. Jessica Enrique, Reporter —SPJST—
Lodge 246 Morganʼs Point Youth Club enjoys activities
Summer 2011 has come to an end, and what a summer it was for SPJST youth! I, myself, had such a wonderful time as a youth leader growing with the SPJST organization. In the number of years that I have been a part of SPJST, I was able to learn more about not only what it has to offer to adult members, but I also was able to enjoy some of the events that are available to the youth of this great organization. And, I can tell you that I had just as much fun as each of our youth who also participated in these activities. The first summer event was the District Two swim party on June 17 held at Walker Pool in Temple. Need I say more than “swimming?” With all this 100-degree weather, this is always the best and quickest way to cool off. Not to mention getting to spend time with your friends and making new ones. Next, there was District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD) held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on July 9. To see all the youth of our district come together to show their gifts and talents in so many different ways was a great way to spend the day. Later that evening, many of the adults and youth of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point gathered at the swimming pool in Morgan’s Point for bit of relaxation and good food. We all had a great time.

Lodge 187, Round Rock Youth Honor Grandparents
Lodge 187, Round Rock Youth Club members are pictured making thank you cups of love for all grandparents in honor of Grandparents Day at the September meeting.
July 28 to 31 . . . Now these were four fun-filled days spent at Cooper Farm for Districts Two and Four summer camp. This was my first year to attend, and I can assure you that it will not be my last. With everything that SPJST and District Two did to make camp a memorable experience to all who attended, my hat goes off them. The time and effort put into camp alone should be proof enough on how important the youth are to SPJST. August 6 was another big day for our youth of SPJST. State Youth Achievement Day was held at Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. This is where all our youth winners from all over the state from all seven districts come together once again to perform and share their talents. A truly amazing event! August 13—many of you came and joined me for a day at the movies at Premier Cinema in Temple. We had a great time and lots of laughs as we all enjoyed the movie. September 10 was the District Two Six Flags trip. What a fun and enjoy-
able day for the youth and adults who went! October 15 is the youth club meeting. Time and location to be announced. November 12 is the youth club meeting and lock-in at Morgan’s Point Community Center. Time to be announced. December 5 is the Temple Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m. and SPJST Home Office Open House following the parade. Lodge 246’s Christmas party will be held in December. Date and time to be announced. I am looking forward to and excited about seeing each of you at our upcoming events! Remember you are always welcome to bring a friend to join us and share in the fun that SPJST has to offer. For further information on any of the events, feel free to contact me, Trish Konkler, (254) 780-9012. Reminders will also be mailed out prior to each event. Trunk-or-treat is a new community tradition
What parent doesn’t worry about the safety of Halloween? Children going door-to-door asking for candy and other trinkets carries with it a certain measure of danger. Hosting candy swaps and other activities tailgate-style removes much of the danger. It’s called trunk-or-treating and is often a community- or church-sponsored event. When people do a trunk-or-treating scenario, families and other participants park in a large parking lot with decked-out car costumes. Or they open their trunks to reveal a decorated Halloween wonderland inside. Participants hang out by their decorated vehicles and then visit others within the safety of the parking lot, sharing treats and stories. The event resembles tailgating at a sporting event — without the sporting event. Depending on the budget and number of families involved, the trunk-ortreat can turn into a big event that lasts into the night. Participants can hire a DJ or other entertainment. There are other ways to make the event fun for all. • Establish a theme and all people attending have to dress up in accordance to that theme.
• Put someone in charge of music, whether a band or DJ is hired or an Mp3 playlist is kept on rotation. • Enlist an impartial judge to vote on the best individual costume and best decorated car.

• Plan events for the kids so they are kept occupied. Scavenger hunts, craft contests (decorating a pumpkin), and other such ideas can be considered. • Be sure to solicit candy donations so there is enough to go around.
• Food and other refreshments may be needed. Participants can bring table-top grills or sandwiches and make it a true tailgating event. • Use the trunk-or-treat time to really mingle and get to know new participants. This is a much more social way to celebrate Halloween than simply going door-to-door. —SPJST—

BENEVOLENCE
President Willis zahájil schůzi, přivítal přítomné, složili jsme přísahu a uctili památku zesnulých,včetně obětí teroristického útoku v New Yorku, NY. před deseti léty.

hovězí pečeně, brambory, zelenina a pravděpodobně najmeme k vaření členy našeho řádu, aby si vydělali nějaké peníze.

We will enjoy the music and join in singing as long as the musicians will play. The open house will also feature “specials” in the museum gift shop all day long as well as door prize drawings. All is required is that you register and get a ticket. TPMM is always looking for donations of polka music memorabilia. This would be a good time to go through your closet or some of the things grandma left you that might relate to Texas polka music and bring them along as a donation. Donations will be preserved and credit given to donors. We have been pleased with the continual stream of memorabilia coming in and are looking for more. We are also very pleased with the visitation to TPMM and gift shop sales. We have over 75 Texas polka band CDs for sale and more coming in all the time.
