Electing the Delegates
Lodges across the state will soon elect delegates for the 31st SPJST
Convention set for June 11 to 13, 2012, at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center in Killeen, Texas. This week’s Vestnik includes a section of the By-Laws (Articles 2 through 16) that pertains to the convention, electing delegates, and delegates’ responsibilties. Serving as a delegate is quite an honor, but it is also an enormous responsibility. Delegates will decide upon changes that will set the course for the entire SPJST organization for the next four years . . . and beyond. Please take time to read pages 17 to 19 to learn more about the convention and delegates. Any SPJST member may request a copy of the By-Laws by contacting Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska’s department at the Home Office. Best wishes to all members who will be vying for delegate positions in their local lodges. Thanks, Lodge 88! Special thanks to Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club for a wonderful evening on Saturday, October 22! It was the youth club’s annual Halloween party, and Youth Leader Barbara Linney-Gonzales, Assistant Michelle Wockenfuss, and youth
members surprised me with an awesome rendering of “Happy Birthday” along with a cake complete with glowing candles! I was so surprised. The Halloween party included many fun activities and games that kept the excited youth entertained throughout the evening. It was great to see so many youth —dressed in their scariest, prettiest, and funniest costumes— and families attending. Great job, Lodge 88! New Book/Signings Available Congratulations to Lodge 88, Houston members Jimmy Brosch and Theresa Cernoch Parker, who collabored on a new book Jimmy Brosch Remembers Twenty Legendary Texas Czech Polka Bands. The book along with a CD can be purchased online at www.20polkabands.com. Lodges interested in hosting a book signing/sale can contact Jimmy at (281) 392-1126.

From the President’s Department While lodges are electing new offiState FAC: cers, this would also be an excellent November Updates time to check the back page of the Vest-
Early Deadline Due to the early date for the SPJST Awards Banquet, which will take place at the Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple on January 28, 2012, your nomination form for the Fraternalist of the Year will be due in the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on December 16, 2011. The eligibility, description of the awards, and program procedure was included in last month’s mail. Please review the information pertaining to the nomination prior to selecting your candidate. If you need another form, you may go online to www.spjst.org and download the form or you may contact Tammy at the Home Office. All information submitted pertaining to the nominee should cover activities for the past year only. Should you have any questions, please feel free to call me or drop me an email. All other deadline dates remain the same. They are:
• January 2—New Officers address, phone listing, and email. • January 13—Fraternal Incentive Report – Year-End and Year-End Fraternal Support and Community Services Report • February 17—Outgoing Officer Awards • May 15—990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office
Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing the leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of their projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2012? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas, and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process.
nik for your meeting date and time. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny (800) 7277578 and have her update your lodge information.
Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2012 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will continue through March 2012. All members are encouraged to give their support as you have in the past. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large.
Veterans Day On November 11, please remember to honor our veterans who have bravely answered the call to defend our right of freedom, aided and comforted our friends and allies, and have turned
away countless aggressors. We, as a nation, can never repay our debt of gratitude to the many men and women who died in the line of battle or were wounded to protect the right of our freedom. Please pause on this day and at your local lodge meeting (even if it is after November 11) to recognize and thank the veterans and the many military men and women who have fought in the past and are still fighting today to protect our freedom. By doing this at your local lodge meeting, this will fulfill item number 13 on your lodge Fraternal Act form. Christmas Open House Please make plans to be in Temple on Monday, December 5. This is the date of the City of Temple’s annual Christmas parade. Again, this year, SPJST will participate in the parade so come out to see what marvelous creation Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny, husband David, and assistant Katherine come up with. They always do such an outstanding job decorating. Following the parade, SPJST will host the annual Holiday Open House at the Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. What a great time to visit the Home Office and socialize with fellow SPJST members. Refreshments will be served and again there is a rumor that Santa will stop by for a visit at the Home Office. Spread the word about this fun event. Watch the Vestnik for additional details as they become available.

A handicap of 80 percent of 200 per game will be added to the total score following the completion of the third game. All teams are encouraged to pre-register by February 3. Watch the Vestnik additional details. Congratulations to Hannah Dawn Kovar of Lodge 9, Snook in District One and Clay Patrick Altenhoff of Lodge 30, Taiton in District Six. They are the 2011 SPJST winners of the Fraternal Alliance of Texas Scholarships. Sixteen students representing eight active fraternals in the state of Texas were named recipients of scholarships at the conclusion of the Fraternal Alliance convention held at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas, on October 22. ARTICLE 4. (a) The convention of the SPJST is composed of delegates elected from among active members of the local lodges. Every lodge has the right to elect a delegate on a numerical basis from its membership, according to the following scale:
1. From 20 to 100 members over 16 years of age, one delegate. 2. For each additional 100 members, one additional delegate if the lodge achieves its insurance goal or its members’ goal; if goal not reached, for each additional 150 members, one additional delegate. Note: A lodge meets its insurance goal when it achieves a three-year total of 15 percent increase of net premium income (excluding annuity premiums) or a 15 percent net increase of members on base year 2007 for the year of the convention and the two years following the convention . 3. A lodge attaining enough new members for an additional delegate between the annual meeting and 60 days before the convention will fill that position under the provisions of Art. 4(g)3. Transfer of membership will not be counted as additional new members and terminations will be subtracted. 4. A lodge represented by its delegate or delegates is entitled to one vote for every active member and every member over 16 years of age belonging to the Society and local lodge at least 60 days before the convention and who has his premiums and dues paid in full. (b) A lodge chartered during the convention year may elect its delegates and substitutes any time before convening of the convention.
(c) A lodge chartered or merged or reorganized less than three years preceding the election of its delegates may elect its delegates and their substitutes from among those members having attended a majority of the regular meetings from the date of its charter, merger or reorganization.
(d) A lodge losing the required number of members between the time of the election of delegates and convention will not lose delegate or delegates due to such change.
(e) Qualifications: Only that member may be elected delegate or substitute delegate who: 1. Qualifies as an active member as defined under Art. 1 of these by-laws.
Page 18
2. Is present during the election or is absent due to unavoidable circumstances. 3. Attended a majority of the regular meetings during the three years preceding the convention. When there is a conflict with the date of their local lodge meeting, the state youth director, district youth counselors and their assistants attending youth club meetings, state and district field representatives, and state and district fraternal activities coordinators, on official business, may count as attending a regular meeting for this purpose. When there is a conflict with the date of their local lodge meeting, Supreme Lodge members attending official functions of the Society qualify as attending a regular meeting for this purpose. Notification must be given to the local lodge secretary prior to the event with written confirmation made by the party within two weeks following the event. New transferred members’ attendance record of the previous lodge shall be accepted. 4. Is a citizen of the United States of America at the time of election. 5. Is not an officer or director of any grand lodge of another fraternal life insurance Society.
(f) If a delegate is not in the convention by the second day he will not be seated unless he has a good excuse, such as serious illness, death, or emergencies which prevented him from attending.
(g) Delegates and substitutes: 1. Delegates and their substitutes to the convention are elected in the annual meeting preceding the convention, or in nearest succeeding meeting, for the term from one convention to the next convention. 2. When a lodge elects delegates, the nomination and election of delegates is made by whatever procedure is deemed most convenient and expedient by the local lodge. If a nominating committee is used, nominations from the floor must be permitted. In the election process, a secret ballot may be used. Ballots containing more or fewer nominees are void and not counted. The nominees receiving the highest number of votes are elected.
3. Not more than 10 substitute delegates are elected. Such substitute shall be elected in the same manner as the delegates. If a lodge is entitled to an additional delegate, as provided in Art. 4(a)3, or if anyone of the elected delegates cannot go to the convention, for whatever reason, the substitute with the highest number of votes fills the first vacancy. The same procedure is continued until all substitutes are depleted, in which case additional delegates are elected, if needed. 4. Delegates approved by the Credentials Committee and the convention, who are present and voting at the convention, shall divide all the local lodge’s votes equally among themselves. Odd vote or votes are taken by the delegate receiving the largest number of votes when elected. (h) No delegate shall vote by proxy. Each delegate will vote his allotted number of votes by separate vote or separate ballot.
ARTICLE 5. (a) The result of the election of the delegates and substitutes shall be forwarded to the secretary treasurer of the Supreme Lodge within 30 days after the election.
(b) The Secretary-Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge forwards to the secretary of the local lodge the required forms in duplicate which must be filled out by the secretary and signed by the president and secretary of the local lodge, to certify the election of the delegate and substitute. After completion, one form must immediately be forwarded to the Secretary-Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge and the second must be delivered to the committee on credentials by the elected delegate at registration. The credential form must contain: 1. A statement of the number of regular meetings held by the lodge the delegate is representing. 2. The number of regular meetings attended by the delegate in each of the three calendar years preceding the convention. 3. The mileage from the delegate’s home to the convention site and return. 4. Delegates will be paid the week after the convention. ARTICLE 6. Lodges failing to comply with all required lodge duties and obligations lose their right to representation at the convention. Effective immediately.

ARTICLE 7. (a) The regular convention is held once every four years in compliance with the laws of the State of Texas. If a matter arises between conventions that needs the approval of the delegates, the Supreme Lodge may conduct a referendum by polling the delegates by secret ballot by mail, delegates being allowed the same number of votes determined at the previous convention. Such action will be accompanied by an adequate explanation. The procedure for the secret ballot is determined by the Supreme Lodge. The proposed bylaw amendment must be mailed to the delegates at least 30 days before the ballots must be returned. (b) In the event of death, incapacity or transfer to another lodge of a delegate, he shall automatically be replaced by the first substitute of such lodge. (c) In the event of merger of two or more lodges, those delegates of each lodge shall be entitled to the same number of votes they had at the preceding convention.

All That Glitters: Gold-Related Investment Scams by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
For centuries, gold has been one of the world’s most popular investments. Long sought-after for coins and jewelry, gold’s demand further increased as the tech revolution required gold for medical devices, cell phones and computers. In recent years, investors worldwide have flocked to the precious metal as a safe haven against uncertainty in the global financial markets. Texans seeking to diversify their investment portfolios may be considering whether to capitalize on rising gold prices. With the price of gold bullion at record levels, potential investors should be cautious of inflated claims that are intended to take advantage of new or inexperienced investors. Before making any investment decision – including a decision to invest in gold, Texans should conduct thorough research and carefully study the market so that they can make informed investment decisions – and know how to avoid deceptive or fraudulent claims about gold-related investment opportunities. Attempts to capitalize on the modern day gold rush range from vendors who overstate their products’ longterm potential for increases in value to securities fraud. For example, the Securities and Exchange Commission recently took legal action against a Florida-based mining company for issuing false press releases about its four new mining projects. According to the SEC complaint, the defendant defrauded investors by misrepresenting the value of its recent mining acquisitions. The defendant also reportedly misrepresented the nature of its ownership rights and overstated the potential profits it could realize from the mining projects. Just as inexperienced investors should conduct careful market research before making major stock market investments, Texans should

also become thoroughly versed in numismatics – the study of coins and currency – before investing heavily in gold coins. For example, fly-by-night websites may commit outright fraud by misrepresenting their products’ bullion content or offering coins from unofficial, non-government “mints” that are made of imitation metals rather than real gold. When a vendor guarantees that a product will double or triple its value in a very short period of time, it is particularly important to investigate their claims and carefully evaluate whether they actually could be true. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the value of bullion coins is determined primarily by their gold or silver content rather than by the coins’ rarity or condition. The price of bullion fluctuates daily, depending on the price of gold and silver in the world markets. At the same time, old coins’ value may be more dependent upon their rarity or condition than the coins’ gold content. Knowledgeable coin collectors and numismatists often research coins and dealers for some time before buying even a single coin. Investment gains in the gold and rare coin market are often the result of careful scrutiny of a coin’s quality, rarity, market availability and price. Aspiring numismatists should always research a coin’s grade and value as well as the prices offered by multiple coin dealers before making a purchase. Prospective buyers should also carefully review the seller’s refund policy and get all other terms of sale in writing. Before making a purchase, Texans may contact the Attorney General’s Office or the Better Business Bureau to find out if other purchasers have filed complaints against a particular seller. Coin buyers should also consider having an independent appraisal service value a coin before any purchase is final. Unfortunately, some venders may overstate the grade of the coins they sell, thereby artificially inflating the price. A third-party grading service can help investors determine the quality and value of coins. Several nonprofit coin dealer associations, such as the American Numismatic Association (ANA), offer tips for selecting a reputable seller who adheres to the associations’ ethics and arbitration guidelines. Texans should also be wary of high-pressure sales pitches for goldrelated investments – particularly when the seller promises high rates of

return or insists that a potential investor make an immediate decision. These tactics are commonly used by con artists to coerce investors into making uninformed purchases. Before making any investment – especially a sizable one, Texans should consult a trusted expert, such as a financial adviser or other professional who can provide a realistic outlook on various investment opportunities and their expected rate of return. As the world’s financial markets continue to struggle, gold will likely continue to be a promising investment opportunity. As with any investment decision, Texans should take time to study the market and find reputable sellers before investing in gold stocks or coins. Careful research may be an investor’s best hedge against a goldrelated investment scam. —SPJST—
Itʼs time to put classic cars to sleep for winter
For those classic car owners who live in more dramatic climates, it’s time to put their cars to sleep for the winter. We’ve put together some steps to help do it right.
1. Top off your levels. Fill your gas tank and add a fuel preservative. The full tank keeps out moisture, and the preservative keeps the gas from breaking down. Take one last drive to circulate the preservative. Make sure your antifreeze is fresh and topped off. To avoid a nasty sludge in the spring, change the oil.
2. Take preventative measures. Give your car a good wash and wax to protect the paint. Protect the chrome with wax or paint sealant. Over-inflate tires to avoid flat spotting, or jack up the car to take pressure off the tires. Put a battery manager on your car. To prevent rodents nesting in an engine compartment, try a rodent repellent under the hood. Just remember to remove it before starting up. Put down a few moisture pads on the upholstery to absorb moisture and prevent mildew. Cover the car with a breathable car cover to prevent corrosion and rust. 3. Re-circulate your oil. When a car sits, oil settles into the pan, leaving the engine without lubri-

cation. Disconnect the coil wire and crank the engine over several times. Reconnect the coil wire and you should be good to go.

State Youth Director: November updates
Dear Youth Leaders, It’s hard to believe that November 1, 2011, marks my first year as your State Youth Director. This was a very fast year! I want to thank a number of people that helped make my transition much easier: Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, Executive Director of the SPJST Education and Nature Center John Hoelscher, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie

Zavodny, District Youth Counselors, Assistant District Youth Counselors, and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez. Each of you played a big part in guiding me with your knowledge of the SPJST Youth Program. Thank you, SPJST youth members. I enjoyed the time you shared with me at your district camps and Youth Achievement Days and look forward to this summer. I am already thinking of new ideas for LIT workshop and district camps and will let you know in the upcoming months what I am planning. On October 16, I traveled to Dallas, Texas, with the State Royalty and their
families to attend Heritage Festival 2011 at the State Fair of Texas. The State Royalty met and visited with State Fair attendees at the SPJST booth. There were two guessing games that visitors played—one for youth and the other for adults. After introducing our State Royalty, we walked the fairgrounds and ended up at the auto show. The State Royalty was mesmerized with all the new cars and a Ford robot that interacted with the crowd. Our State Royalty were asked many questions about SPJST, and they did a great job explaining the youth program. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! Those of you that have to travel during the Thanksgiving holiday, I wish you safe travel to your destinations. Remember not to eat too much turkey and dressing . . . The saying around our house is, “Your eyelids are tied to your stomach, and if you overeat then your eyelids are pulled down and you will fall asleep.” If you fall asleep, you will miss out on all the football games! Also, encourage your youth club members to turn in those referral cards!

I would like to commend the vast majority of you for getting the Vestnik projects in on time. Keep up the good work! October Vestnik projects are due on November 15. Quarterly and Merit Reports Due December 15 Please make every effort to submit your quarterly and merit reports before December 15. This is the second quarterly report for September, October, and November. Those of you that email the electronic quarterly report into the

youth office need to submit the sign-in sheet with the electronic file. This took the place of the youth having to initial the paper quarterly report. You can send the sign-in sheet by scanning the page, mailing, or faxing to my office. The fax number for the Fraternal Department is (254) 774-7447. These reports help to determine the funding your youth club will receive at the spring meeting and how much money your district receives for its youth activities. Youth clubs that do not submit their quarterly and merit reports on time will lose out on their incentives. This can mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive This year’s goal is to raise $20,000.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
This is in addition to the allocation that the Supreme Lodge has made. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with nearly 1,906 scholarships valued at over $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who contribute to this wonderful program. Remember that no contribution is too big or small. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. Thank you for your participation.

Thanksgiving Smart
Friends and family come together on Thanksgiving to enjoy good company and good food. The big game is on in the living room and that crazy uncle of yours is yelling at the coach. Grandpa is doing his best to eat the deviled egg population. Suddenly, you see him clutch his throat and turning pale. What do you do? Your actions could save his life. Thanksgiving is the annual holiday of over eating and the opportunity to find ourselves in the emergency room rather than the living room or dining room at home. Here are just a few tips to help keep your holiday safe.
Know some basic first-aid. If someone is choking be prepared to use the Heimlich Maneuver. From behind, wrap your arms around the person’s waist. Make a fist, placing the thumb side of your fist against the person’s abdomen, below the ribcage and about the navel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into their upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Repeat until object is expelled.
Remind your parents when they are preparing to carve the turkey a sharp carving knife is a safe knife. Dull blades are more likely to slip and cause a nasty cut to the user. Keeping the kitchen utensils clean can prevent an overnight stay in the bathroom or emergency room. Wash all surfaces with soap and water. Make sure you avoid cross-contamination of cooking utensils and cutting boards.
Kitchen fires, such as grease fires are very dangerous and you should never use water to put out the fire. Use a pan lid or baking soda to contain the flames. Better yet, buy a dry chemical fire extinguisher for the kitchen.
If you decide not to cook and visit relatives, be smart on the road. Drive carefully and stay alert. There are plenty of other folks who will be tired, stressed or otherwise distracted while driving. The holidays are a great time to visit and catch up with loved ones. Do your best not to spend that quality time with a doctor or nurse at the local hospital.
Tommy the Turkey is getting ready for Thanksgiving. Help Tommy have the right information to keep his family safe this Thanksgiving season by filling in the blanks and answering the questions below.

Call-in youth meeting set for Monday, Nov. 7
Attention youth club members and others interested in learning more about the SPJST’s great youth program. Make plans to meet — by telephone — Monday, November 7 at 7 p.m. for the SPJST Youth Department’s call-in youth club meeting. This call-in meeting represents an effort by the Youth Department to use technology to bring young people together. Both teleconferencing and Internet teleconference are being explored as ways to introduce young people to the SPJST Youth Program, especially those members belonging to lodges without youth clubs or living in areas not presently accessible to a youth club.
Conducting meetings while miles apart is easy with teleconferencing and Internet conferencing. Youth club members currently belonging to an active youth club will also be able to join in these meetings and may receive credit for attending up to two teleconference or online meetings. This may be crucial for those youth club members seeking to qualify for their district youth achievement days or camp. To join in this youth club teleconference meeting, dial 1 (888) 2733658. When you are asked for the access code, dial 2029155 and hit the # sign. Meeting participants may call in up to 10 minutes in advance in order to assure a more orderly check-in process. Call participants are asked to “sign-in” orally as they come online. After participants have signed-in please press *6 to mute the phone. If you need to ask a question you can press *6 to clear the

Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club Makes A Difference
Dear Members, For Make A Difference Day, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club packaged more than 2,000 candy bags to be distributed at the City of Morgan’s Point annual Halloween carnival to be held at the community center on October 31. Usually, the bags and candy comes out of city funds. Our goal was for our youth club to collect enough candy for this year’s event that the city would not incur any expenses for the purchase of candy. We reached out to
vendors throughout the surrounding area, and we had a wonderful response. We express thanks and appreciation to the following great people and businesses who helped make this project possible: Downing Transportation (Troy, Texas) 15+ cases of candy McLane Southwest (Temple, Texas) 3 large cases of chocolate Manson Mobile Service (Moody, Texas) $100
Temple Freightliner (Temple, Texas) $100 Walmart Distribution/Greatwide Transportation (Temple, Texas) $100 Walmart (Belton, Texas) $25 HEB (Belton, Texas) $30 HEB (Temple - South 31st Street) $50 Sam’s Club (Temple, Texas) $25
Lodge 246 youth and adult members and friends gathered on October 15 at the community center in Morgan’s Point to fill 2,000 treat bags with the candy donations. Pizza and cupcakes were served. It was a great day where we all made a difference for the city and the youth in Morgan’s Point Resort, Texas! Fraternally, Trish Konkler Youth Leader —SPJST—

Scenes from Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club’s Membership Drive Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 2011 • SPJST Lodge 87, Temple Hall
On October 15, 2011, Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club held a membership drive at the lodge hall. We started off the event at 6:30 p.m. We played games outside, and Youth Leader Jennifer Davidson took snapshots of the kids playing. We all gathered in the graveyard to take a “scary” group picture. The last game we played, Youth Leader Jennifer assigned the leaders-in-training (LITs) to help her with. We played the mingle game learned at camp. She would call out random numbers for us to get in groups of that number. The last number called was the group that we were to stay in for the night activities. We then all went inside to have our monthly meeting. Vanessa opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence. Then, we said our youth motto. Vanessa called roll. Then, our youth leader took over. She asked all visitors to please stand and introduce themselves. Youth Leader Jennifer and Assistant Lucas went
over things that SPJST does for the youth. They explained the fun things that the youth get to do, but also what the youth get from SPJST. They had information to hand out, and they also had our scrapbook from this year there for everyone to be able to look through to see all the fun things. At the end of the meeting, everyone was allowed to look through the book, and we all ate cupcakes, cookies, and sandwiches, served along with some spooky punch. Once everyone was done with treats, we went back outside and got into our groups. Youth Leader Jennifer and Lucas went and got the hall ready for the haunted house, and haunted trail ride. They took groups of three through the haunted house for a frightful start to the haunted trail. Once all the kids were on the trailer, we took a ride through our field and wove between some haybales where we had some “parent” monsters lurking. Once the ride was over and the kids had gotten their scare, we all went back in to the hall. At this
point, we had karaoke set up for the kids. Jennifer and Lucas started the night off with singing “YMCA.” Next, they had everyone get into a big circle with one person in the middle. They started playing dance songs, and everyone had to take a turn in the center busting a move. The night then moved on to all the kids singing and dancing the night away. Around 12 midnight, the kids who were not going to spend the night headed out. The remaining kids aired up their mattresses and got ready for bed. However, we stayed up telling haunted stories. The best was when Youth Leader Jennifer had the man with red eyes in the back come on right when everyone was ready to go to sleep. It was pretty scary to see red eyes come on in a black room and hear his creepy voice. Upon waking up, we packed up our bags and ate some cereal. It was a lot of fun. BENEVOLENCE
ROČNÍK 99 CISLO 43
Origin of Czech Surnames in the Czech Republic
Newcomer to a Village The most common family name in Bohemia and Moravia is the surname Novak. If translated into English, it would be Newman). The name was given by the fact that the novelty was the first and most important sign of a newcomer who came to the closed community of old village inhabitants. The same ground have similar Czech surnames Novotny; and less common Novy or Novacek (diminuitive form of Novy or Novak). One who came from a wander was called Prochazka from verb to walk.
Social Status of the Name Bearer The second expressive distinguishing feature was the connection to landowners. Besides the serfs (subdued people), there were free, independent yeomen or freeholders among the rural population; thus the given surname Svoboda - a free man; or Dvorak - a farmer having his free farm (Dvur = court, yard). The farmer who had a big piece of a land was called Sedlak, a smaller one Sedlacek. In Moravia, the equivalent was Lanik. Who, according to social status owned only a small house without scarcely any land, was called Chalupa, Chalupnik, Chaloupka - the same as cottager; or Zahradnik (from zahrada) - a garden.
Personal Features of an Individual Personal features contributed to the origin of surnames. There was an overwhelming fair-haired population in our country in the past, and a man with dark hair or face was an exception. Thus, the surname Cerny (and equivalent Cernik) or in German parts Schwarz (in the Czech script Svarc) came into existence. Similar is the origin of surnames describing the temperamental and physical features of the bearer: Vesely (a cheerful man); Kysely (sauer or bit-

ter), Kysela Kucera (a curly); or Ruzicka - a small rose, a handful, nice man; Hlava, Hlavica - a head; Huba a mouth; Brada - a chin; Nozka - a foot, especially a small one; and Noha - a big foot. First Biblical and Slavic Names Most surnames are derived from Christian first names, with many variations and/or derivatives, formed also by plenty of suffixes. The most common surnames derived from a first name are Benes (Benedict) and the derivatives: Benisek, Benak, Benda, Benik; and Marek (Marcus) and the derivatives Marecek, Markus, Markovic, Marhoul, Mares, Marsalek
(which could be derived also from marshall), Marsik, and Martisek. Very common are family names Urban, Bartos (Bartholomew), Havel (Gallus), Janak, Janecek, Janousek, Janda (John), Kaspar (Caspar), Klima (Clemens), Mach or Machacek, Martinek (Martin), Pesek, Petrak (Peter), Vavra (Vavrinec-Lawrence), Blazek, Simek (Simon), Stepanek (Stephan), Tomas or Tomasek, and Vacek (Venceslaus). Not only Biblical names were used, but also first names of Slavic origin: Jaros - from Jaromir; Sobek - from Sobeslav; and Stich - from Stibor. Commonly used suffixes:

November 17 Take Time to Remember: the week of November 17 - the Velvet Revolution in the former Czechoslovakia. Reflect on the 10 most eventful days that fell between November 17 and 27, 1989, when on that first day, a peaceful student demonstration to commemorate International Students Day ended in violence. From that revolution, one of the most important developments was the establishment of the Civic Forum by Vaclav Havel, the countryʼs first President of the Second Republic, and the fall of communism after 43 years. - a: Havela; Barta; Kuba (Ja-kub); Tomsa (Tom-as) - s: Toms (Tom-as); Kubes (Ja-kub) - s: and - s with hook - š, pronounced -sh- : Pes (Pe-tr); Bures (Bur-ian); Bartos (Bart-olomej); Vavrus or Vavrous (Vavr-inec) - c: pronounced as - z - in German words like Ziel; Kubex; Maca; Maca (Ma-tej) - k, ek: pronounced -kh, -eck: Martinek; Brozek; Lacek - ha: Blaha (Blazej); Janda (Jan) - ta: Kubata; Machata; Vasata - n: Zikan (Zich- Zacharias) - u: Janu; Machu: discribing rather the origin like in Russian Alexandrovic; or in Anglo-Saxon names Son.
Surnames Derived from Localities, Regions, Foreign Countries There are other sorts of Czech surnames derived from local names. They are mostly formed by a suffix -ky, or -sky: Prazsky from Praha; Mohelnicky from Mohelnice; Kolinsky from Kolin; Palacky from Palacov; or Bilovsky from Bilov or Bilovec. Surnames derived from villages or towns may be also in second grammar case (genitive): Skounic or Skaunitz; Klecan - from Klecany; or a surname may describe simply an inhabitant from a town: Prazan, Prazak - inhabitant of Prague. Surnames may also indicate a citizen from a foreign country or region: Nemec - came from Germany; Slezak - from Silesia; Moravec - from Moravia; Hanak - a Moravian fertile region around Olomouc; or Slovak - from the south of Moravia or from Slovakia.
Trade and Occupation Another big group of surnames is formed by those derived from the names of occupation or of social status (same as those previously indicate): Kovar - smith; Kolar - cart-wright; Kadlec - weaver; Rybar - fisherman, and in German form Fischer or Fiser; Mlynar or in German Mueller, resp.

Miler or Tesar - carpenter. Adding a prefix or suffix to its deminutive form has already certain expressive meaning: Nekovar - a smith who is better to keep out of the way; and Tesarik - a carpenter, rather small by the skill or height. Social/class status is reflected in the family names Mestan - burgher; Sedlak or Lanik - a farmer; Ctvrtnik - a farmer who owned a quarter of a “lan”; Chalupnik - cottager; Svobodnik - a freeman; Hrabe - count; Biskup - bishop; Starosta - a mayor; Rychtar judge or sheriff; or Safar - administrator of a landlord’s yard. There are plenty of surnames based on military rank and file: Vojak, Vojacek - soldier. There is also a Czech name Soldan or Soldat; Dragoun, Kapralek - corporal; and Jeneral - general. Artisans received nicknames from which surnames developed later also according to their tools. Thus, you can find a tailor named Jehlicka - a needle; or a baker named Rohlicek - a roll; a butcher named Jitrnicka - something like a white pudding; Kladivo - hammer; Palicka - pounder; Knedlik dumpling; Moucka - flour; and Buchta - cake.
Nature - Animals and Plants The nature provided a lot of inspiration for the creation of family names. A large group of surnames developed from the names of various animals that either resembled the physical or character feature of a man: Myska - mouse; Zaba - frog; Jelinekstag; Jezek - hedgehog; Vrabec - sparrow; Vrana - crow; or Broucek - a diminuitive form of a beetle). Names drived from plants: Fiala - viola; Chmela - hops; Zito - rye; Repa - beet; Makovicka - poppyhead; Jahoda strawberry; Smrcka - spruce; Jedlicka - fir; or Doubek - oak.
Describing Activity, Status A very interesting and unusual group of surnames is that formed from present tense or past participle of verbs or even derived from full sentences. The example of perfectum: Hrabal raked; Koupil, Soukup developed from the trade of its bearer - a dealer, buyer; Navratil - returned; or Vrzala chirked, scraped. Sometimes if a thing was bought too expensively, the buyer was called Drahokoupil. Similar names, nicknames, or even jeers: Precechtel (And-he-wanted-it-after-all); Stojespal - (He-slept-standing); Zlamaljelito (He-broke-the-blackpudding); Snedlditetikasi - yes, this

surname really exists - (He-ate-theand Nassquash-to-the-child); ralvhrnec - but please, do not ask me to translate it).
Foreign Surnames Czech surnames also include the surnames of foreign origin. They can be found everywhere where two Bohemian nations have lived peacefully together for ages. A common German surname in our countries: Mueller or Miller. Czech people adopted German names by mixed intermarriages or when they settled in German-speaking regions. These are mainly the surnames describing their origin: Prager, Politzer; or simply Boehm - Czech. Some German names appeared in a prevailing Czech milieu with German administrations, clergy, or landlords. Former Novak was simply translated to Neumann and later again Czechinized to Najman. Sedlak thus became Bauer and later Bajer. Kovar was changed to Schmied and later to Smid. Besides the German influence, other nationalities contributed to the surname creation in Bohemia and Moravia. Vlach (Italian) became later a synonymum for any mason. Original Italian names are preserved in Czech artist families Chittusi and Stretti. We can find a few French family names as Le Breux, Rohan, and Buteau. Their ancestors came here mostly after the French Revolution or as soldiers with the Napoleonic Army in the beginning of the 19th century. Common are Polish and some Hungarian names. The difference between Czech and Slovak names is not notable in all cases. http://zlimpkk.tripod.com/Genealogy/czechsurnames.html —SPJST—

Czech Veterans Wall of Honor opening soon
The generous offer from SPJST allowing the Texas Czech Genealogical Society to permanently erect its Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor has made the possibility of creating a full-blown Czech military museum a reality. Currently, TCGS is reconstructing the Wall of Honor, originally measuring some 40 feet in length. Located in the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas, the Wall now measures 96 feet. The Wall of Honor pays tribute to all Czech men and women who have served, or are currently serving in the United States military, the military of the Czech Republic, or the former Czech Lands. If you have a Czech family member or friend who wore the uniform of his country, and his photo has not yet been submitted for the Wall, please send the photo to: John Gantt, 3807 Kelli Lane, Bryan, Texas 77802, or email to john.gantt@gmail.com. In addition, TCGS is collecting military items, uniforms from all branches of the service, and other memorabilia for inclusion in the Czech Veterans’ Museum. Donors will be acknowledged with a card displayed with the item. Military mementoes may also be placed on loan to TCGS and the military museum. Persons doing so will be recognized in the museum. Czech Avant-Garde and Modern Glass coming to Houston
New Formations: Czech AvantGarde Art and Modern Glass from the Roy and Mary Cullen Collection will be displayed November 4, 2011, to February 5, 2012, at Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH). The exhibition presents works of art hidden from the public during the Cold War. Shedding light on a littleknown chapter of 20th-century art, the exhibition features more than 150 Czech avant-garde works collected by Houston philanthropists Roy and Mary Cullen. Among the objects on view are outstanding examples from the flowering of Czech Surrealism; rare artists' books and avant-garde periodicals; and exquisitely molded and blown modern glass. Highlights include artworks by Surrealist pioneer and feminist Toyen; drawings by Josef Šíma; collages and photomontages by Karel Teige; and paintings, drawings, and photographs by Jindrich Štyrský. The title New Formations is taken from the Artificielismus (Artificialism) manifesto, published in the late 1920s by Štyrský and Toyen. It aptly reflects the Cullens’ spirit of adventure and their commitment to charting this lost chapter of the avant-garde. An illustrated catalogue, produced by the MFAH with Yale University Press, accompanies the exhibition. We urge you to attend the exceptional educational event at MFAH.
