Dear Vestnik Readers, As we head into the holiday season, we need to remember the men and women serving our country. A few months ago, our youth club sent a care package to Major Bruce Skrabanek, United States Army, who is now deployed to Afghanistan. Major Skrabanek sent a very special package back to SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club. In this package was a letter thanking the youth club for the package and along with his letter, we received a certificate and a United States Flag. The flag was flown in Afghanistan on September 11, 2011, marking the 10th anniversary of the attack on our nation. This has to be the greatest honor our youth club has received. I want to personally thank Major Skrabanek for his service to our country.

In his letter, Major Skrabanek writes:
Members of Lodge 9: I wanted to send you all a special thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. The care packages you sent were incredible. Everyone here thoroughly enjoyed the items, and they also send their thanks. In order to show my gratitude, I decided to send a flag that was flown here in Afghanistan to symbolize the freedom that we are all over here to protect. This flag was flown on September 11, 2011, the 10-year anniver-

Thanks and Gratitude
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He
held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon, the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way.” I wrote: “Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.” Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? Moral of the story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1,000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear. The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling. And even more beautiful is, knowing that you are the reason behind it!
Happy Thanksgiving, dear Vestnik readers and SPJST members. I am certainly thankful for you and all of your support.
Holiday Mail for Heroes Sending a “touch of home” to American men and women who serve our country is the perfect way to express your appreciation and support during the holiday season. Now is the time to start thinking about being part of the 2011 American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes. For a fifth year, American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes are partnering to ensure all Americans have an opportunity to send a touch of home this holiday season to members of our U.S. military, veterans and their families, many of whom will be far away from home this holiday season. The Red Cross is working with Pitney Bowes, a mail stream technology company, to collect and distribute holiday cards to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. The process is very simple and takes no time at all - All you need is a pen and piece of paper to share your appreciation for the sacrifices members of the U.S. Armed Forces make to protect our freedoms. The Holiday Mail for Heroes mail box is open and ready to receive for your cards. Please send all mail to: Holiday Mail For Heroes P.O. Box 5456 Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456
All cards being sent should be postmarked no later than Friday, December 9, 2011. Visit www.spjst.org for more information. —SPJST—

Czech Center Museum Houston expresses appreciation
Dear Brian, As a business manager you know the days of “ups and downs.” We had a very “up” day on Monday, November 7, 2011, when SPJST District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt delivered an SPJST check made out to the Czech Center Museum Houston. The check represented an annual allocation as set forth by the 30th SPJST Convention of 2008. Under the allocation, the CCMH had a stipulated amount designated each year, and this check represented a four-year period, which was an unexpected windfall. The Center had requested funding prior to the 2008 Convention, and we went through the years unknowing if had been approved. The grant will be used to fund a needed capital item. It is truly one of the “little miracles” we pray for to help our organization. SPJST, beginning with Mr. Louis Hanus, has supported the CCMH organization through the years, and this check caused us to reflect on the motivation behind it. SPJST as a fraternal and non-profit is among few organizations which espouse preservation of Czech culture and heritage which actively does not take a parochial view of competing organization or an organization charged with the same mission. Unafraid of inroads in their own
mission, it actively funds and promotes the overall objective of all organizations with a like outlook. Your members are to be applauded for taking this path. Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt are among our strongest supporters and in SPJST, they are the best of the best. Many of your members are also our supporters. For that ecumenism and generosity on their part, we are so grateful. The SPJST website explains its objective:
One of the most significant fraternal developments in SPJST over the past few decades has been the increase in volunteerism and human services projects. In lodges all over the state, members are committing their time and energy to the support of worthwhile causes, helping people in need by working in hospitals and old age homes, and raising money for many causes, including scholarships, food banks, volunteer fire departments, drug abuse programs, and various charities. They have taken the best that SPJST has to offer - a tradition of helping people to care for their families - and have extended it to their communities. Children, members, and leaders of SPJST are left with this thought: “Whether you are a descendant of Czech heritage or not, remember the undeniable courage and important sacrifices the earliest settlers made to give you a respectable sense of true

honor as you thrive in the SPJST organization.” The fraternal component of SPJST further enhances membership by emphasizing Czech heritage and the social and civic responsibilities that members share with each other and the communities in which they live. It could not have been said better. As a founding member of SPJST Lodge 232, Mid-Houston, which has not been chartered, and most of its members enlisted are members of my family, I wish there were enlistees to be gained to Lodge 232 through your other sales personnel. We have requested this assistance before. Unfortunately, they are beholden to their own lodges, even though some of their enlistees might be in the area surrounding our facility. In this respect, I wish that they might be a part of the charter group of Lodge 232. Thank you for the support of SPJST through this organization’s 17 formative years as a fledging and as a member of the City of Houston’s Museum District. We will not forget your largesse. We proudly serve as your partner and promoter of the objectives espoused on your website. My warmest regards, Effie M. Rosene Chair/CEO Czech Center Museum Houston —SPJST—

Editor Melanie, Wow! What a shock and surprise to see our pictures on the front page of the Vestnik. We have always enjoyed working for our Lodge 80 — almost 60 years. We tried to show our grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to make things before food processors and food choppers. Thank you for the great honor. Hope we deserve it. Lodge 15 Buckholts appreciates membersʼ dedication
The November meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order by President Douglas Williams at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Martha Glaser followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. We not only want to remember those who have gone on to be with the Lord, but remember also those who are in nursing homes. Recently, faithful, longtime member Charlsie Svetlik, age 93, became a resident now in a Cameron nursing home. All officers were present except First Vice President Scott Brandon and Second Vice President Adolph Jurca. President Williams welcomed everyone and thanked all for coming. We were few in number - only seven members and two guests. The secretary and treasurer each gave their reports, and the reports were approved as read. In old business, President Williams had a copy of the sketches of the drawings for the master plan that he had received from Heimsath Architects in Austin. Included were drawings for the outside as well as the inside, and all were very pretty. The local historical society is very interested in the restoration project. We have many

Lodge 23, Moravia Christmas social Sunday, Dec. 4
On Wednesday November 9, 2011, Dr. Bob Uzzel, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, lectured to a class in “American Popular Music” at the University of North Texas at Denton. Dr. Uzzel’s subject was Blind Lemon Jefferson, the Wortham blues singer whose biography he wrote. After his lecture, guitarist KM Williams and harmonica master Jeff Stone performed some of Lemon’s songs. The class is taught by Dr. Tom Sovik. Pictured above are, left to right, Dr. Uzzel, Dr. Sovik, Jeff Stone, and KM Williams.
other interesting historical sights in this area. They are hoping in the future to get tour buses touring those historical sights, and our historical lodge would be included. We thank Arthur Peevey and Frank Tomascik for repairing the steps to the building. President Williams also had J.D. Pratt do some other needed repairs to the building.
Happy Birthday, Lodge 6, Cottonwood Members!
Happy November birthday to, left to right, Milton Peterson, Evelyn Reynolds, Georgie Soukup, Lucille Sulak, and Johnnie Krizan, all of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. They were recognized at the lodge’s November meeting. —Submitted by Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer
In new business, President Williams stated that we all need to visit the Cameron Museum in the old Dusek Pharmacy building. He said it is nice and very interesting. President Williams attended a meeting there. The county judge spoke on bringing our communities together, to join hands on projects, and to work together. A lot of our members are getting old and can’t attend lodge meetings, but we are so thankful for several who attend - no matter their age! Hilda Burtis for one, age 95, is a regular. She doesn’t drive anymore, but thanks to Sandie Fischer who gives her a ride. Kathleen Jurca, age 94, is a regular. We give thanks to her son Adolph Jurca who brings her. And on many occasions, Lillie Zajicek, age 94, attends. Thanks to Frank Klinkovsky and Laverne Vanicek for giving her a ride. Frank Tomascik, age 90, is a regular. We are so honored to have these folks each month. It is time to elect officers for the coming year - 2012. We were sorry to hear that Scott Brandon, current vice president, will not be able to serve this coming year due to his full schedule. So Virginia Williams nominated Frank Tomascik for first vice president, seconded by Sandie Fischer. Motion carried. Hilda Burtis made the motion to elect the remainder of the officers by acclamation, seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried.

Lodge 24, Cyclone plans Dec. 12 Christmas party
Dear Readers, The November meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday evening, the 14th. There were 14 members present. President Daniel Wilde called the meeting to order, and we recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence in remembrance of deceased and sick members and also to honor all Veterans. Secretary Margaret was absent at the October meeting so no minutes from the meeting were read. Treasurer Linda Wilde was absent due to illness so Margaret gave the treasurer’s report. Youth Leader Joan Vanicek reported on the youth club. They met on Sunday, November 13. The youth went to the old Cyclone cemetery and picked up trash and put flowers on all the graves that didn’t have any. They plan to have their Christmas party on December 11 and will collect items for the Ronald McDonald House. FAC Shirley Hoelscher was absent so there was no FAC report - just check the Věstník for all upcoming events. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek said he had three things to tell

us. Number one was to welcome everyone to the Temple Christmas parade. Number two was to welcome everyone to stop by the Home Office for a social after the Temple Christmas parade. After a few seconds, well, he couldn’t remember number three. Ha, ha, ha! I have red hair, but it took me a few minutes to get at what he was portraying. It was cute. We are lucky to have the Supreme Lodge President as a member of our lodge.
Christmas Party—December 12 We discussed the Christmas party. It will be held at Oscar Store on December 12 starting at 7 p.m. We do need for you to RSVP by December 5. Please call Daniel and Linda Wilde (254) 985-2258 or Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska (254) 985-2484. If you want to participate, we will do the Chinese Christmas gift exchange. We changed the spending limit to $10, but that part of it is not important. If you want to participate, please bring a gift. We will also take Christmas donations for the Ronald McDonald House. So make plans to come and enjoy an evening at Oscar Store for the Lodge 24, Cyclone Christmas Party on Monday, December 12. We held election of officers. That pretty much stayed the same with the exception of youth leader. Joan was ready to give that up. So, 2012 officers are: President Daniel Wilde Vice President/FAC Shirley Hoelscher Secretary Margaret Mikeska Treasurer Linda Wilde Reporter Theresa Klecka Youth Leader Kim Campbell Assistant Youth Leader Brenda Maddux
We want to thank Joan for her many years of service to the lodge and youth of Cyclone. We tabled election of a Fraternalist of the Year, but elected delegates for the convention. Delegates are Jason Hoelscher, Daniel Wilde, Barbara Macek, Shirley Hoelscher, Wilbert Mikeska, and Margaret Mikeska. Alternates will be Joan Vanicek and Linda Wilde. Birthdays for November are Jason Hoelscher, Abigail Hoelscher, Rosamond Bedrich, and Eugene Haisler. No anniversaries were reported. We express our sympathy to Daniel Wilde on the loss of his mother. We wish continued good health to Dorothy Haisler and Bobby Hoelscher.

By lunch time, we had 22 members and four guests - Joe Kostak, Julius Podhrasky, Joe Ehrenberger, and Georgia Holy. Lunch was delicious as always. Thank you, all. And thanks you to the clean up crew and Joe Kostak for taking out the trash. Quilters returned to quilting and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for all our Veterans who have served our country in the past and those who are serving now. We owe them a great deal. Secretary Margaret Martinek read the minutes of the last meeting with one minor correction was made. Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced November birthday celebrants - Martha Ritchey and Willy Matus. “Happy Birthday” was sung to both of them. Eleanora had cards for all to sign for Ginny Svehlak, thinking of you and happy birthday for Geraldine Zhanel. Her birthday is the early part of December. Scheduler Pat announced we will quilt for Victoria Vlk in January 2012 weather permitting. If is snows or is freezing, we will cancel. We are so happy to say that Willy Matous joined the Circle. Guest Georgia Holy was introduced. We hope that she joins us also. Ann Clagett read a thank you form Mildred Krajca for remembering her after her minor surgery. President Dorothy thanked Bertha
Podhrasky for the beautiful bouquet of flowers for the main table from her flower garden. They were beautiful. Geraldine Valek was thanked for donating coffee and cups and Joyce Ehrenberger for tea cups and Christmas napkins. We truly appreciate all your donations of items. President Dorothy reminded for all to purchase tickets on the Christmas quilt. Our Christmas party was discussed. We will meet around 10 am. except for those who want to help set up able and chairs and decorates. No quilting that day, no door prize, and o little gift exchange. We will exchange Christmas gifts. We are to spend about $10 on each and please put your name on the gift. That way, we can thank whoever gave the gift. Ann Clagett volunteered to bake the turkey; Margaret Martinek and Willy Matus volunteered for gravy. We thank the above and everyone else, bring items to go with the above. We will eat around 11:30 a.m. then have a short meeting, and the exchanging of gifts. Libbie was asked if she would purchase dinner plates, dessert plates, and tea at Sam’s. We thank her for that. Ann Clagett read an article on “Quilt Quotes”. It was enjoyed by all. Bertha Podhrasky’s husband Julius came in with a most unusual, pretty walking cane that he carved out himself. I just have to tell you about. Many years ago when Julius worked for Mobil Oil, his friend worked with the field crew in East Texas and brought him this piece of wood. Julius has had the wood in his garage for 40 years and finally decided to carve a walking cane out of it. He carved a beautiful design on it. The top of the cane was

Members Dorothy Valek, Margaret Martinek, Ann Clagett, Libbie Vrla, Dorothy Prachyl, and Bertha Podhrasky have already brought items for their sacks. Others plan to bring items next month. Guest Georgia Holy was introduced. We were happy to have her. We hope she comes again. President Dorothy thanked Joan Strunc for a quilt top that she donated which someone had given to her. Betty Macalik for a box of material scraps form her mother Annie Martinek’s home. Cathy VandenEykel for the box thread and other craft items. It is always fun to go through there boxes and take what we want. Thanks, everyone. We all congratulated Dorothy Prachyl as she and husband Wesley are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. We wish them many more years together. The door prize was brought by Dorothy Bobalek for Ginny Svehlak and won by Dorothy Prachyl. Little gifts were passed out by Ann Clagett which is always fun. President Dorothy thanked all for coming, for the wonderful meal, for the clean up and reminded all of our Christmas party December 8. Remember we will meet around 10 a.m., have a meal, bring your Christmas gift and money for quilt chances if you haven’t already bought some. The quilt is very pretty; who knows you may be the lucky winner. We hope all of our members can make the party. We miss all of you, especially those of you who have missed the last meetings. I reminisce this time of year missing the farm we held so dear we all had dirty hands, for sure cotton farmers is what we were
dirt we worked and seeds we sowed acre by acre, row by row and dirt was really all we knew our sustenance , our substance too
dirt’s what made me who I am and no matter how much I pretend the dirt is in me, just the same dirt is in my very veins
when I recall the way we were it brings a tear now, that’s for sure those times were lean and dollars few but memories is what we grew
and even now, quite honestly I miss that old farm desperately ‘cause no matter how hard it was my heart’s still there, well just because like cotton crops on which we toiled I’m still rooted in the soil and though I’m now so citified I’m still a dirt farmer till I die. —SPJST—

Credit Card Relief
By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Recent economic reports have observed that Americans reverted back to the credit-dependent trends of the eighties. Apparently, the nation’s populace hasn’t heeded the warnings regarding carrying too much debt. Unfortunately, this statement could be applied to the federal government James L. Lee, III as well. For families grappling with swollen credit card balances, professional financial advisors offer a three-step strategy for coping with year-end bills and avoiding future troubles. The International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP), recommends:
⇒ understanding the credit terms of card issuers, ⇒ learning how, and whether, cards should be used, and ⇒ developing an aggressive plan for paying off debts.
Consumers should find out the conditions and policies of their lenders, such as length of grace period, whether the interest rate is fixed or variable, and how much is charged for cash advances. A study by Princeton Survey Research Associates found that 76 percent of card holders do not know their credit cards’ payment terms. Most people have too many credit cards and are surprised at just how high a price they pay for the convenience of the card. Most consumers only need one
major credit card that is universally accepted. For people who have the cash flow to pay off balances each month, a charge card - rather than a credit card is a better choice. If credit is needed, choose a card with the lowest available interest rate. Often, people with one or more credit cards should look for a card that charges less interest and transfer all of their debt to that one card. Ultimately, the way to bring credit card debt under control is with an aggressive plan to pay off existing balances. After consolidating as many credit card bills as possible, tackle the card with the highest interest rate first. Pay as much as possible toward the principal each month, while paying the minimum required on any other cards. As you eliminate the balance, begin paying more toward the principal on the others. Credit cards sometimes make sense for smaller or short-term needs, but for major purchases, a home equity line of credit might be a better choice since the interest is lower and is usually tax deductible. Understanding the proper use of credit cards is an important part of the overall financial planning process. Be sure to check with your financial advisor to see what alternatives are available to you. Lodge 25, Ennis youth work to cut trees
Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been very busy this past month. It started with our monthly meeting which I won one of the door prizes. Then, I danced the beseda at the St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home in Caldwell. The youth club played bingo with the residents. I was able to help one of them, and we won. For her prize, she let me pick something out of the prize box for myself. That was very nice of her. We also provided lunch for the Habitat for Humanity group that was building a house in Caldwell. I provided sandwiches for them. It was also my birthday this month, and we celebrated it at the park with all my friends and family. Fraternally, Chandler Sebesta, age 6 —SPJST—

sary of attack on our nation. I wanted to send a flag to the lodge because as a child growing up in Snook, I learned early on the value of family and friends, the honor in a hard day’s work, and a respect for both God and country. Our flag is the one true symbol of our nation, and I cherish it each and every time I glance up at a flag flying proudly anywhere in the world. Many of the valuable lessons, I learned as a youth were learned through activities and events I attended with the SPJST Youth Club. I have very fond memories of camping trips, monthly meetings, making cards for the senior citizens, and of course, the Christmas party. I hope this flag can in some small way show my sincere gratitude to the leaders and volunteers that devoted countless hours to ensure that we had fun and healthy activities to participate in throughout the years. It is an honor and privilege to serve our nation in the Army. I am thankful
History of the crossword puzzle
The crossword puzzle is a beloved yet relatively new component of popular culture. I hope that this flag reminds you of the countless men and women who serve throughout the world, ensuring that our way of life is protected. I would never have been able to be where I am today if I had not been taught the many valuable lessons I learned from organizations such as SPJST. Again, I would like to thank you all for the care packages that you sent. I greatly appreciate the kindness and generosity. Thank you. The first crossword was actually called a “wordcross” and was diamond shaped. The name of the puzzle was later switched to “cross-word” and then crossword. Wynne said he based his crossword puzzle on a game that was played in ancient Pompeii. It was called “magic squares” when translated from Latin.

Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club Receives Funds for Organizing
Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club received a check from the Home Office for organizing a youth club in 2011. The youth club has been active for almost a year. Although the crossword puzzle became a frequent inclusion in newsprint, it wasn’t until 1924 when publisher Simon & Schuster published the first collection of crosswords in book form that the crossword became available in a more widespread manner. Crossword puzzles are governed by a series of rules. There are different types of grids for these puzzles depending on origin. For example, crosswords often follow an American style, a British style, a Japanese style, and a
Swedish style. Each of these styles has their own series of rules. These rules pertain to the number of cells and how many are shaded or white. A white cell that is part of two entries, meaning part of an Across and Down clue, is called checked. A white cell that is only part of one clue is unchecked. Crossword grids such as those appearing in most North American newspapers and magazines feature solid areas of white squares. Every letter is checked, and usually each answer is required to contain at least

three letters. In these puzzles shaded squares are usually limited to about one-sixth of the design. Another component of North American puzzles is that the grid should have symmetry when rotated 180 degrees. The pattern should appear the same even if the puzzle is turned upside down. Most puzzle designs require the white cells to also be connected in one mass through shared sides, which is a concept called being orthogonally contiguous. Puzzles are often standard sizes. Easier puzzles have fewer cells and may have 15x15 squares. Puzzles can increase in complexity as they grow larger, up to 25x25. Many newspapers start out with easier puzzles earlier in the work week and move to a harder puzzle in time for the Sunday puzzle. In terms of American-style puzzles where all of the white cells are checked, not all of the solutions will
be full words. American puzzles allow for abbreviations, variant spellings or even foreign words. This isn’t the case with British puzzles. Most American puzzles follow a theme. Crossword puzzles have become a component of the daily lives of people all around the world. They continue to be a source of entertainment and even competition. (MS) —SPJST—

Delicious sugar cookies
Part of the enjoyment of the holiday season involves spending time in the kitchen whipping up delicious treats. Particularly for young children, baking sugar cookies with Mom or Dad and then decorating the creations can be a festive way to spend a day. Those short on time can turn to store-made sugar cookie dough for their cookie making, but those who want the authentic taste of cookies from scratch, there are many recipes from which to choose. This recipe for rolled sugar cookies produces cookies that will hold up well to cutting and baking. They're also quite delicious.

2. Mix the dry ingredients together and add to the wet ingredients until incorporated. Cover and refrigerate the dough for at least one hour.
3. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. On a surface coated with some confectioners’ sugar, roll out the dough to between 1/4- and 1/2-inch thickness (a thinner cookie will be crispier). Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter.
4. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Place cookies 1 inch apart on the parchment.
5. Bake around 5 to 7 minutes, or just until the edges of the cookies start to brown. Remove promptly from the cookie sheet and cool on a rack.
6. Decorate the cookies using icing (recipe below) when the cookies cool, or sprinkle with colored sugar while cookies are warm. Cookie Icing (Covers 1 dozen cookies)

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club: Fun-Filled Night of Games and Food with Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club
Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club joined up with Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club for our monthly meeting. On November 12, 2011, we all gathered at Morgan’s Point Community Center for a fun-filled night of games and food. Lodge 246 Youth Leader Trish led the group in many minute-to-win-it games. The game we liked the most was the balloon game. We took the balloons and tried to blow them up. Then, we took the air and tried to blow the cups off the table. Once we had the game done, we took our balloons and tied
them off and played around with them - hitting them up into the air. We had so much fun. We played a lot of games like Clue, Twister, etc. We had some hot dogs and really good cupcakes. We all worked on our Vestnik projects. The most important thing that we did was build food baskets. All the kids were asked to bring canned goods to help fill the baskets. We really liked the fact that we were going to get to help the community out. We ended the night watching movies.

Then, we went to sleep. The next morning, we had breakfast burritos. After helping clean the hall, we all went outside to play on the playground nearby and to watch all the deer. Thank you, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club, for a change in pace from our normal meetings. We had so much fun and can’t wait until the next time. Ryan Davidson, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memory of Charlie Sanders
In Memoriam
In Memory of Margie Haas
Margalene Alvina Klattenhoff Haas passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 after suffering a massive stroke and heart attack three days prior. Margalene, youngest child of Alex and Katherine (Katie) Klattenhoff, was born Margie Haas in Round Rock, Texas, on May 21, 1933. She was an active child and had some adventures growing up including falling out of a tree on her Dad’s birthday, losing a fingernail in the barrel of a bb gun, and getting caught in a barbed wire fence and hanging there until she was rescued. Margalene said that she had to play with the boy cousins at Grandma Klattenhoff’s because she was too young for the girls; perhaps, the truth is she fit in quite well with those boys. During high school, she shortened her name to Margie, as she was tired of being called “Oleo” — it so happened that oleo-margarine had just come into use as a substitute for butter. She graduated from Round Rock High School in 1950 then Texas Lutheran College in Seguin in 1954 with an elementary education degree. She played cornet in high school even with braces - and in college. Margie taught 37 years, mostly third grade; the last 25 years were at Wooten Elementary. She retired in 1991. In 1951, during college summer vacation, she had a blind date with Delvin John Haas; they dated once a month that fall. In January 1952, Delvin was drafted into the Army where he served 18 months on a ship in the Phillipines doing survey work. They continued their courtship through letters. After Delvin’s discharge, they married on June 26, 1954. They honeymooned in Pike’s Peak, Las Vegas, Carlsbad Caverns, and Big Bend. Margie and Delvin made their first home on a farm they purchased south of Georgetown. In 1957, they moved to Irving, Texas, then in 1960, they moved to Weyford Drive in Austin where Margie lived nearly 40 years.
Margie taught Bible school and sang in the choir at Ascension Lutheran Church. When their sons Wayne and Gary and their Klattenhoff nieces and nephews were young, Margie and Delvin purchased a Winnebago, spending summer weekends with extended family at Lake Travis, traveling the United States and Canada with their sons, and in later years, with the Capital Gad-Abouts RV Club. Delvin worked in banking and real estate. In 1980, he suffered a heart attack and underwent by-pass surgery. In August 1986, Delvin passed away due to heart disease. In 1991, Margie began dating a longtime family friend, Richard Bryant. They were married in 1993; Richard passed away a short time later. In later years, Margie reintroduced herself as Margalene then would say “I go by either name now.” The last 13 years, Margie lived in independent senior housing. It suited her. She participated in nearly every activity and helped residents however she could. Margie enjoyed socializing, playing games, crafts - the latest was making warm caps for soldiers, trying new things like landscape painting, trivia, reading, and the Parson’s House Kazoo and Singing Group. She was active in the Friendship Club and SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock where she served as fraternal activities coordinator. Margie was baptized, confirmed, and married to Delvin at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pflugerville. She was laid to rest next to Delvin at Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Park in Pflugerville on Sunday, October 9. Margie is survived by sons Wayne Haas of North Carolina and Gary Haas of Austin; sister Jennave Klattenhoff Fuchs and husband Wilfred of Round Rock; sister-in-law Elsie Fleischer of Georgetown; and nieces and nephews. Margie’s sister Jennave visited Parons’ House the day after Margie’s death. A resident was working on a jigsaw puzzle alone. She said she had heard about Margie, that they had worked puzzles together, that she loved her very much and would really miss her. Didn’t we, and won’t we all. —SPJST—

From Pilsen, Bohemia, to Chicago, to Mexico, and back to Chicago with occasional side trips to Czechoslovakia . . .
In 1889, 14-year-old John A. Sokol came to Chicago from Pilsen, Bohemia, to seek a better position in life. Starting out as a grocery delivery boy, he learned the food business and in November 1895, at age 20, he opened his first grocery store at the corner of Polk and Paulina. By 1902, he added three more stores.
Sokol’s zeal for travel and adventure led him to Mexico a year later with his wife Marie where he invested in a coffee plantation. That adventure

ended with the Mexican Revolution in 1905. Not to be discouraged, Sokol returned to Chicago and started a wholesale coffee, tea, and spice business on West Randolph Street, incorporating the name Sokol and Company in 1907. Proud of his family heritage, Sokol helped found the CzechoslovakianAmerican Chamber of Commerce after World War I. Later, he established European importing contacts from which his Chicago-based company could purchase herbs and spices. In the 1920s, Sokol introduced the Solo line of food products, which consisted mostly of cake and pastry fillings made from prunes and European-imported poppy seeds. The Solo name became an instant success. Later, the company expanded into dehydrated foods, imported spices, and other Solo dessert fillings. In the 1950s, the company added its

Urgent call for submission of pictures for Wall of Honor
Since first unveiling the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor at a conference in Caldwell in the spring of 2010, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society has seen the Wall grow from 40 feet long to its present size of 96 feet. Originally designed to be a portable exhibit shown at various Society conferences, a generous offer was made by SPJST to allow the Texas Czech Genealogical Society to permanently erect the Wall at its Home Office in Temple. The Wall of Honor pays tribute to all Czech men and women who have served, or are currently serving in the United States military (all branches), the forces of the Confederate States of America, the military of the Czech Re-
public, or the former Czech Lands. In years of come, the Wall will serve to remind those who view it of the sacrifices for freedom, no matter how great or how small, of these brave and deserving veterans. The expanded Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor is scheduled to be formally unveiled to the public on Monday, December 5, 2011, in conjuction with the SPJST Home Office Christmas Open House. It is evident that many Czech veterans (living or deceased) are not yet represented on the Wall in spite of numerous invitations for the submissions of their pictures. What better way to honor your Czech veteran than to take the opportunity, without delay, to submit his or her photo for placement on the Wall that rightly belongs to him or her. Your prompt response will be appreciated. Photos, with brief pertinent information about the Veteran’s service, should be sent to: John Gantt, 3807 Kelli Lane, Bryan, Texas 77802 or email to john.gantt@gmail.com. Please note that Texas Czech Genealogical Society is also collecting military items, uniforms from all branches of service, and other similar memorabilia for inclusion in the Czech Veterans’ Museum, of which the Wall of Honor is a part. Donors will be acknowledged with a card displayed with the item. Military mementos may also be placed in loan to

CZECH VETERANS' MILITARY MUSEUM When the SPJST Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors learned the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor was in storage and displayed only on special occasions, they voted to allow us to have the Wall on permanent display in a Czech Veterans’ Military Museum which will be housed at the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. A first of its kind, we know of no other museum in the United States dedicated to Czech Veterans. We are extremely thankful and proud to be in partnership with SPJST as we can stand together, proudly honoring and paying tribute to our Czech Veterans. While the 94-foot by 8-foot Wall is being reconstructed, we are also collecting military uniforms and memorabilia, photos, posters, etc. Upon entering the museum, the Wall of Honor will begin to your immediate right; on the left, military flags will be proudly displayed beneath large gold “God Bless America” lettering. Flags to be displayed include United States Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, POW/MIA, 9-11, Korean War Veteran, Vietnam Veteran, and the United States flag. Some time ago, we sent a bulk email to our TCGS members asking if they would like to purchase a flag set, which includes everything pictured on the left including a flag spreader, in honor of a loved one. Almost immediately the US Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Korean War Veteran, and the US flags were requested. Flag sets remaining to be purchased are: Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, POW/MIA, 911, and Vietnam Veteran. If you would like to remember a loved one by purchasing one of the available flag sets, please contact Charlene Hurta. A donor display card will be placed with the flag. We are very proud of having the availability of a special alcove designated to those who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice. This alcove will house the Ultimate Sacrifice Flag (which has already been $165.00 Complete Set purchased) along with wooden plaques like the one shown on the Includes the flag spreader right. These plaques will be hung on the wall (with the donor name plate displayed underneath), while the Ultimate Sacrifice will stand in the middle. The quotation on the lower right of the plaque reads: “This country was founded and built by people with great dreams and the courage to take risks . . .” Ronald Reagan We know of no better way to let the world know your loved one gave his or her life for our freedom.
If you are interested in purchasing either a flag set or an Ultimate $35.00 Includes Sacrifice Plaque, please send your check (made payable to TCGS) and Donor Name Plate the needed information to Charlene Hurta at 1231 CR 201A, Angleton, Texas 77515.
