Happy New Year, SPJST!
W e sincerely wish you, your family, and friends a happy new year!
We’d also like to extend a sincere “thank you” for being our valued Vestnik reader and SPJST member. We truly appreciate you and your support! The Heart of SPJST For the first time ever, the float entered the East Bernard Christmas parade on Saturday, December 10. Lodge 28, East Bernard members eagerly booked the float more than a year ago. So the day finally came — and what a (very cold then warm) day it was. Members arrived before the parade bearing morning svacina. Kolaches were still warm, and the orange juice tasted freshly squeezed. What a wonderful and delicious treat! Several members walked along the parade route handing out pencils, key chains, and candy to the many parade watchers along the streets of East Bernard, Texas. After the parade was over, members gathered at Vincik’s for lunch, camaraderie, and a meeting. The spirit of fraternalism and SPJST was amazing. Thank you, Lodge 28, for your kind hospitality. David and I really, really enjoyed it. As I was saying goodbye to Joe Nezval, I noticed he was wearing his 75-year SPJST pin. That impressed me — and inspired me— and made me realize just how proud and appreciative Joe and so many other members around the state are to be SPJST members. We left the friendly town of East Bernard and headed to Franklin for a
great evening parade. The next day, we enjoyed Christmas parties — along with delicious meals — at Lodge 30, Taiton and Lodge 47, Seaton. It was so good to see and visit with many members from these lodges. Thank you for inviting us to your beautifully decorated halls. The next week, we attended more Christmas parties with Lodge 24, Cyclone; Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy; and Lodge 185, New Braunfels. Great job to each of these lodges for organizing such fantastic events with many attendees. Lodge 24 remembered its deceased members with a candlelight service before dinner. Best wishes to newly reorganized Lodge 200. And, Lodge 185 - wow, there were so many youth in attendance. The youth club has grown by leaps and bounds. Great job! Lodge 258, Seguin officially marked the end of the Christmas season with its party on December 28. It was a fun, festive event. Thanks, members, for a wonderful time.
Tribute 2012 Now, it’s 2012, and what a year is in store for us. The 31st convention will be held in June, and throughout the year, SPJST will celebrate its 115th anniversary. And, something very special to the Vestnik in 2012— it’s our 100th year! We will kick off Tribute 2012 in next week’s Vestnik by announcing the membership campaign and also what we have in store for the Vestnik this year. What an exciting time to be an SPJST member. —SPJST—

Lodge 81, Needville member shares granddaughterʼs poem
Dear Melanie, First of all, I would like to say that my husband and myself enjoy reading the Vestnik. You’re doing a great job. We are members of Lodge 81, Needville. Our 14-year-old granddaughter Raven Krobot wrote this little saying while riding with us in the car while it was raining, and it has such great meaning that I would like to hear that others think the same. Thank you, Irene Krobot Lodge 81, Needville
One day I was watching the rain sprinkle on the window of the car. I noticed that no raindrop was exactly alike, and as the drops dripped down the window, they would hit other raindrops along the way. When they touched the drops, they would get bigger, and drip more quickly. The more they touched, the larger they got, the faster they would drip. In a way, this made me think of life. Everyone is unique. No one is perfect. All of the people we meet and the obstacles we encounter only make us stronger than before. As life goes on, the stronger we get and the faster it goes. The raindrops can’t go back up the window and detach themselves from the other raindrops they hit, nor can they decide which ones they hit. Neither can we. The raindrops don’t stop and try to do that, either. Why do we? There is no reason to dwell on the past when you can’t change it. Life doesn’t stop to wait for us to get over stuff. It goes on. We should, too. Everything happens for a reason. Don’t look at things as if they are the end, think of them as a new beginning. This is why we should just live life to the fullest. You only live once. Take chances. You never know how something will end up if you don’t try it. And if it doesn’t work out, at least you know how it ended up instead of wondering how it would have gone. Life is too short. Live it how you want to. Because we all end up evaporating anyway. —Raven Krobot
Lodge 133, San Antonio member reflects on President Havelʼs passing
Dear Sister Melanie, The whole country is feeling the loss of President Vaclav Havel. It is almost like when President John Kennedy was shot. People are showing their loss, their pride, and their freedom due to President Havel. Many weren’t happy with some things he did while serving as president; however, they have the great respect for him and what he did for the country and for them. Today (December 21), he left the Church of St. Anne where he laid in state for two days. This church he was instrumental in it’s reconstruction so it was fitting for him to be there. Thousands and thousands of people came to pay their respects, to pray, and to leave a flower. His journey took him through part of Prague across Charles Bridge, then up to Prague Castle. The casket (coffin) was then placed upon a six-horse drawn artillery wagon with a canon and walked into the gate of The Prague Castle, then was carried upon the shoulders of six soldiers into the Grand Hall within the castle; this was the same as was used for President Masaryk when he died. All along the route, people were applauding as his casket passed and also people were shaking keys in his honor, remembering November 1989. It was very moving even seeing it on television as the band played somber music, people were crying, and you could see the love on their faces of their President . . . not ex-president. I, too, was glued to the television watching with the same feelings as all people on the streets. Thousands were all along the way. Flags of many countries were seen among those; the weather was cold with a very light rain at times. People started lining up as early as 6 a.m., and they came from all over the Czech Republic. They all had the same look on their faces — that of great loss full of love and respect for this man. With deep sadness for his death and with great pride for what he did for my ancestral homeland, I send you this report . . . Fraternally, John Kuba Lodge 133, San Antonio
Lodge 180, Burleson expresses appreciation

always have them be different. All of the SPJST members who enjoy riding the float and participating in our “parade riding and watching party” appreciate you bringing the float to Cleburne and for taking the time to visit with us after the parade. He stated that SPJST lodges represent an important connection between the SPJST Supreme Lodge and SPJST members across the state of Texas. The program seeks to help lodges reach members in their areas as effectively as possible and make a difference in lives of their members and the communities that they seek to serve. Central to achieving Model Lodge status for 2012 is that lodges achieve at least seven out of the 10 Model Lodge Best Practices.
Providing effective training for lodge officers is one of the most critical parts of a lodge’s mission. The SPJST Supreme Lodge will promote workshops throughout the state emphasizing the various components of what it takes to achieve “Model Lodge” designation.

SERVICE AWARDS The session reconvened, and the first item of business was a service award. Doris Tyroch was honored for 45 years of faithful and devoted service to SPJST. Doris is employed in the Insurance Department, and the award was presented by Vice President McBride.
SOFTWARE SUMMARY President Vanicek provided a summary of the presentation of the SE2 Admin system. He also presented a summary of costs of our current software vendor. It was decided to pursue all options that are available for consideration in the January Supreme Lodge meeting. The officers were getting more information on the workings of the SE2 system and also looking into other vendors with Insurance Admin Systems and look into other options available through our current software provider.
SPJST FOUNDATION President Vanicek reviewed the proposed certificate of formation of the SPJST Foundation. The provisions of the document were reviewed and the number of directors was changed from seven to 11. Specific language on the purposes was to be presented at the January Supreme Lodge meeting. FINANCIAL SECRETARY REPORT Financial Secretary Vajdak presented a written report summarizing his activities during the first month of his service.
He reported in detail steps that were taken to enable him to complete the annual statement including purchase of Booke software and plans to attend an annual statement preparation course. He recommended that his assistant Debbie Dohnalik also attend so that she is prepared as a backup. He reported on meetings held to assign budget responsibilities in preparation of a preliminary budget. He also presented a report of stale dated checks.
Financial Secretary Vajdak discussed the large number of draft payments returned by the bank unpaid due to insufficient funds and questioned if a charge is allowed in these cases.
CONTINUING EDUCATION Vice President McBride discussed the rules governing continuing education and the problem of getting some sales agents to take the required number of classroom or online classes through Web CE. It was decided that all sales agents be informed by letters of their responsibility regarding continuing education (CE) credits. Texas insurance regulations require 30 hours every two years.
ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Director Rollwitz moved adjournment. Director Ahlstrom seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 3:32 p.m.
The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge is set for January 17 to 19, 2012, and will begin at 8 a.m. on January 17. Fraternally submitted, Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer —SPJST—

January Fraternal Updates
SPJST Lodges Invited to Attend Awards Banquet January 28 in Temple All SPJST lodges are invited to participate in the 2011 SPJST Awards Banquet which will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. The event begins at 1 p.m. and is expected to conclude by 6 p.m. The format for this year’s event has been streamlined to include less down time and greater recognition for each lodge officer, sales agent, and member being honored. To facilitate attendance, every lodge will have mileage paid for at least one vehicle. Lodges that will be receiving incentive awards will be authorized mileage for up to two vehicles. Lodge presidents and secretaries will be receiving a letter during the second week of January informing their lodge if they will receive mileage for an extra vehicle. Awardwinning sales agents will also be receiving notification from the Insurance Department. In order to plan for the banquet portion of the awards ceremony, the Home Office is requesting a head count on or before January 20. Efforts of lodge secretaries to get this information in prior to the deadline will be greatly appreciated. All lodges are entitled to send their 2011 and/or 2012 lodge officers to the banquet free of charge. Each officer is entitled to bring a guest. A reservation form is being sent to lodge secretaries. If you have any questions with regards to this process, please feel free to call State Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 7277578. She will be handling the reservations for this year’s awards banquet. Again, lodge officers are encouraged to save the date and make plans to attend the 2011 Awards Banquet on
January 28 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Lodge presidents and secretaries will be receiving additional information by mail.
SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook The new SPJST Tasty Traditions cookbook is now available. If you have not already received your edition, you will be able to place your order online at www.spjst.org or you may call the Home Office to place an order. The books include 700 pages and approximately 1,400 recipes. When ordering through the mail, there will be a $3 charge for shipping/handling per book. Please know that Colleen will have a table set up at the awards banquet on Saturday, January 28 for members who wish to purchase cookbooks prior to the start of the program. If any lodge would like to purchase in case lots (20 books), please call me in advance so that we can arrange to meet at the Home Office Saturday morning. All books are $15 each, so bring cash, check, or your credit card to the banquet.
Happy New Year! I hope that each of you had a merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year celebration. This past month, Colleen and I had the opportunity to meet with many lodges, enjoy some great fraternalism, and some great Christmas parties. Thank you for sharing the joy of the holiday season with us. As we look back at 2011, we see a road paved with life experiences – both bad and good. The bad times stemmed from the ups and downs of doing business in an environment recovering from economic hardships from the previous year. The good times reflect the ongoing ability of the SPJST and its lodges to make a positive difference in the lives of its members and their communities. Life goes on. With the New Year upon us, this is a time for introspection
and planning. Look, too, at your failures and see them as learning experiences upon which you can build and improve in the coming year. Important Deadlines The following reports are due on the dates:
January 2—New Officers address, phone listing and email. January 13—Fraternal Incentive Report – Year-End and Year-End Fraternal Support and Community Services Report February 17—Outgoing Officer Awards May 15—990 and 990-T to IRS and copy to Home Office

who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not reelected for the year 2012 and does not seek reelection in future years is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings. All requests should be in the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator’s office by February 17.
Lifetime Achiever Award requests will be due two weeks prior to your district spring meeting. If you would like to recognize the Every Day Heroes in your lodge, a form to request these pins is available at www.spjst.org. If all these reports are submitted on time, your lodge will be able to use item number two on the Year-End Fraternal Incentive Report as one of your fraternal acts. Please know, if these reports are not submitted by the deadline, any incentive money your lodge has coming, will be held until these reports are received. If your lodge has not addressed these items, please make sure to do so as soon as possible. These programs benefit your lodge as well as your members. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact me.
Progressive 42 Domino Tournament Please make plans to be in Beyersville on Saturday, January 14 for a day of fun and fraternalism. Lodge 48, Beyersville will host the State Progressive 42 Tournament. You do not need a partner to enter this tournament. We will draw for partners at the start of each round. If you need an entry form, please go to the SPJST website at www.spjst.org click on Fraternal Activities. Then, click on upcoming fraternal activities for a flyer and an entry form. All participants are encouraged to pre-register so we will have some idea as to how many players plan to participate and for meal preparations. If you will recall, at the Supreme Lodge meeting in July 2009, it was voted to let non-members participate. The registration fee for members will be $7 while non-members pay $15. If any member knows of someone (member or non-member) who would like to participate, please invite them to submit an entry.
Outgoing Officers Do not forget to honor your officers
SPJST Scholarship Application Deadline The deadline for submitting applications for the SPJST Scholarship is
Officer Elections All lodges should have elected officers in the months of November or December. Please take a moment to complete the paperwork sent to each lodge and return to the office of Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. Information requested is the names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails of the officers for the coming year. Remember, this counts as one of your fraternal acts for the year if all paperwork is submitted on time. If this has already been done, thank you. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to update information in the back section of the Vestnik. If any information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny (800) 727-7578.
100 Pennies Scholarship Drive This year’s goal is to raise $20,000 in addition to the Supreme Lodge allocation. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31, 2012.

Texas Fraternal Bowling Tournament Start making plans now to be in New Braunfels, Texas, on Saturday, February 11 at Fiesta Lanes, located at 1202 Huisache Avenue (behind HEBWalnut Street) for the Eighth Annual Fraternal Alliance of Texas Bowling Tournament to raise funds for the Fraternal Alliance of Texas scholarships. Members ages 16 and up are eligible to participate. All lodges and/or members are encouraged to bring an item for the silent auction (no alcohol please—the bowling center has a liquor license) which will be held in conjunction with the bowling tournament to raise additional funds to benefit the scholarship program. Those who participated this past year will testify that it was a fun day filled with lots of fraternalism shared by all while raising money for a worthy cause. Teams this year will consist of five members—any combination of men and women. Registration will begin a 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with bowling starting at 12 noon. A handicap of 80 percent of 200 per game will be added to the total score following the completion of the third game. All teams are encouraged to preregister by February 6. Join Hands Day As your lodge and youth club makes plans for the coming year, we strongly encourage all lodges to mark May 5 on your calendar and make plans to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. The idea is simple: adults and youth working together and with other organizations to make good things happen in your community. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with The Points Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their projects. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. Lodges, even those who do not have a youth club, are encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school, and/or church groups. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the
office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator prior to Join Hands Day and online with Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered their project online. Remember, to receive your check, you must register your project online as well as with SPJST Home Office. We can help you with that if you have any questions. Our goal for 2012 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your lodge do? Projects from previous years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-up, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, and conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects. You have plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2012. The main thing is to make a commitment now to do something. If you have any question, please feel free to contact me or Tammy. We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to call me

West VFW receives $3,000 donation to bring Veterans Traveling Wall to city in 2012 Article from The West News • December 22, 2011
West VFW Post 4819 has received a significant boost to their efforts to bring the American Veterans Traveling Wall to the city in 2012 as they received two donations totaling $3,000. SPJST, an organization which serves Texas families with life insurance products and fraternal activities, made a $3,000 donation toward the project on Sunday, December 18 during the VFW Post’s one-year anniversary of its monthly breakfast fundraisers to raise money for this project. Johnnie Krizan, SPJST District Three Director, said all four SPJST lodges in McLennan County (Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Lodge 35, Elk; Lodge 54, West; and Lodge 66,
Waco) voted to donate a total of $1,500 to the Wall project, and SPJST directors voted to match this donation with another $1,500 to bring the total donation to $3,000. “It (Veterans Memorial Wall) is a good way to honor and pay respect to our veterans,” Krizan said Sunday following the donation presentation. “People will have the opportunity to come by and pay their respects to this tribute (when it comes to West). I think it is something for the community to be proud of.” Krizan further explained that SPJST “is a highly patriotic organization” and this type of donation follows that line of thinking. “We have always held country and flag in honor.”
Rob Buchanan, VFW Post 4819 Commander, said the traveling wall is currently scheduled to arrive in West and be set up on May 24, 2012, stay in the city through the Memorial Day weekend and leave on May 29. This exhibit is to feature an 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Veterans Wall in Washington, D.C. The traveling tribute is a veteranowned project which travels the United States to provide a forum for communities to honor, respect, and remember all who have sacrificed their lives for this country’s freedom. This will be the first time the Traveling Wall is brought to West, and the cost for bringing it to the city is over $10,000. —SPJST—

Lodge 130, Dallas: benevolence ideas wanted
In our commitment to the spirit of fraternalism and benevolence, Lodge 130, Dallas would like to hear from any members or lodges who have become aware of a pressing need being experienced within the SPJST community. We’d like to help if we can. While in the past we have supported several worthy causes, we are always looking first to support our own SPJST community. It is amazing how seldom it is that we hear that such needs even exist within our membership - yet it is obvious that issues do exist. So, occasionally we turn to a general notice like this - to get the word out. We treat all benevolences confidentially and consider it our privilege to help. If you would like to bring a particular need to the attention of Lodge 130

It is a great pleasure to announce the 64th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Leo and Olga Havel, the loving parents of Carolyn, Darlene, Marlene, and Brenda. God has blessed them with 12 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren who grow daily in God’s love and grace. Mom and Dad have taught the family to be patient, loving, understanding, and how to live a Godly life. We thank God for our parents, who are members of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.
Prachyl, Josephine Kubin, Vickie Kohn, Cathy VandenEykel, Agnes Dujka, and Pat Fowler. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Irene, Josephine, and Pat who were in attendance.

Eleanora reported that she had a phone call from Geraldine Zhanel when she received the card we all signed for her. She was glad to hear from us as she got it on her exact day. We signed birthday cards for Vickie Kohn and Agnes Dujka, our shut-in members. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt for Victoria Vlk in January, weather permitting; Pat Fowler in February; and Ann Clagett in March. Ann Clagett read a thank you note from Ginny Svehlak. Irene Prachyl made a motion that if anyone brings a new dish that they bring a copy of the recipe. We have such good dishes that we all want to make them. President Dorothy asked for all to introduce their guests. Anna Marie Eszlinger from the Dallas Circle of Women was introduced. She was a guest of Sidney Bridewell and stated how much she was enjoying herself. I introduced my longtime good friend Helen Brasher. She knew about 12 members, and she truly enjoyed visiting with them all. Pat Fowler and Irene Prachyl were asked to be on the nominating committee for 2012 officers. Irene Prachyl, Willy Matus, Bertha Podhrasky, and Joyce Ehrenberger were thanked for the items that they brought for the shut-in members’ gift sacks. I think our shut-ins will be very pleased and happy as they have many nice items in their sacks. Thank you to all who brought items this month and last month and thank you to the ones who delivered them.

Sons of Hermann Centennial by Dr. Bob Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood
2011 marked the centennial year for the Dallas Sons of Hermann Hall. Hermann—the namesake of the Order of the Sons of Hermann—was called “Arminius” by the Romans. After his capture, he was drafted into the Roman Army and became an outstanding military leader. However, when the Romans began to oppress his people, the 27-year-old Hermann organized German tribesmen for a major military victory. His tribal forces defeated three Roman legions in the Battle of Teutoberger Forest in 9 A.D. According to some historians, this victory marked the beginning of the end of domination by the Caesars over Germany as well as the British Isles. Hermann died 12 years later. Today, a monument topped by his statue stands on a wooded hilltop near Detmold, Germany. There are also statues of Hermann in New Ulm, Minnesota, and at the entrance of the German village of Spassberg at Six

From the small beginning in New York, the order had grown to 800 members in six northern states by 1847. At a convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Christmas Day 1848, a Grand Lodge, with offices in New York City, was organized. The newly created national order adopted the motto “Friendship, Love, and Loyalty.” This non-profit fraternal benefit society provides members with financial security and opportunities for personal enrichment through community service and activities. Today, the organization has more than 73,000 members and 140 lodges in Texas. The Grand Lodge is now in San Antonio. Dallas Lodge 22 of the Order of the Sons of Hermann was chartered in 1890 and Columbia Lodge 66 was chartered in 1893. Today both lodges meet at the Sons of Hermann Hall at 3414 Elm in Dallas. This building was built in 1910, and the grand opening was held in April 1911. This building is now a Texas Historic Landmark. The Sons of Hermann music tradition began when members joined the Dallas Froshinn Singing Society, formed in 1877. Sons of Hermann member Simon Mayer opened the Elm Street Music Venue in 1884. Hero of the Thousands follow Velvet Revolution, Václav Havelʼs Václav Havel dies casket on Václav Havel, writer and drama- final journey tist, one of the first spokesmen for the to Prague Castle
Charter 77 human rights movement, a leading figure in the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the last president of the state of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic, died on Sunday, December 18, 2011, at the age of 75. The death of Václav Havel stopped Czechs in their tracks on Sunday, December 18, 2011. A hush fell over the country as thousands of people gathered to light candles and pay a silent tribute to the hero of the Velvet Revolution. At 6 p.m., bells around the Czech Republic tolled in memory of the man who showed endless courage in the face of oppression and who led his nation on the road to freedom and democracy. For millions of his countrymen however, Vaclav Havel was a tower of strength, a moral authority, and an inspiration who showed people that freedom and human rights were worth fighting for. — Daniela Lazarová —SPJST—

The atmosphere in the Czech capital was somber on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 as thousands of mourners followed ex-president Václav Havel’s casket on its final journey through Prague. Along the entire route from Prague Crossroads in the Old Town over Charles Bridge and up to Prague Castle, people lined the streets, some holding candles, others photographs of the late ex-president, paying their last respects to the man who more than twenty years ago led his country to freedom and democracy. The ex-president’s plain wooden coffin was loaded into a black Mercedes hearse and covered with flowers as it slowly wound its way through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, across Charles Bridge and up to Prague Castle, the seat of Czech presidents. Walking behind were family members – Václav Havel’s widow Dagmar and her daughter Nina, his brother Ivan and his wife, Havel’s close friends and co-workers and members of the public. Bells tolled in the distance as the almost silent procession made its way across the bridge and up to the Castle Guards Garrison on Loretánské náměstí.

There, the casket bearing the late ex-president’s remains was transferred to a gun carriage, the same which bore the remains of Czechoslovakia’s first president T.G. Masaryk, draped with the Czech flag and flanked by members of the Castle Guard. Close to 500 soldiers of the Czech armed forces, some of them bearing the historical banners of Czechoslovak legions, marched behind the casket to the
sound of a military band. As the cortege reached Prague Castle, where flags were flying at half mast, it started to rain and as the coffin entered the castle gates the crowd began quietly applauding and jangling their keys in a final spontaneous tribute recollecting the protest gesture people made during the 1989 Velvet Revolution to signal the final bell on the communist regime.

The ex-president’s casket was carried to the historic Vladislav Hall where the country’s elite was waiting to pay their last respects to the country’s first postcommunist president. His successor in office President Václav Klaus said the country owed Václav Havel a huge debt of gratitude. “We are gathered here to honour the legacy of the country’s first postcommunist president Václav Havel. His name will always symbolize the Velvet Revolution and Czechoslovakia’s return to freedom and democracy. We are gathered here to pay homage to a great statesman, a man so respected internationally that he became a symbol of the fight for

democracy and human rights worldwide; a man who did more for the country’s prestige and position in the world than any other.” Mr. Klaus said that many people regarded Václav Havel’s demise as the end of an era and appealed to the Czech people not to let this come about. He said Czechs owed it to the late president to do everything in their power to keep Václav Havel’s ideas alive and live by his moral convictions. Václav Havel’s body will now lie in state in Vladislav Hall until the funeral ceremony at St. Vitus Cathedral on Friday, December 23 at noon. — Pavla Horáková http://www.radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/thousands-follow-vaclavhavels-casket-on-final-journey-to-prague-castle

SPJST Youth
Section State Youth Directorʼs January updates
The final weeks of 2011 were filled with Christmas cheer. After attending several lodge parties and holiday events, it’s easy to see how much we all have in common. Everyone wants to make things better for their families, their lodges, and their communities. Fraternalism is the friendly spirit that brings all of these good things together.

Sometimes that chemistry is so strong that I can actually feel it when I walk into a room. When that happens, it’s great and it’s exciting! This year’s Temple Christmas Parade and SPJST Christmas Open House on December 5 were both wonderful successes. Thanks to everyone who turned out for these events. Both of the SPJST floats were in the Temple parade. Melanie and David continue to do a first-class job incorporating new ideas for the floats. Members of the SPJST State Royalty Court once again endured the cold evening and rode in
Corvettes and represented SPJST very well. Later, at the Open House, Royalty Court members participated in helping the youth decorate gingerbread cookies. It was a great time for the youth and the young-at-heart. Thanks to Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members and Youth Leader Lynette Talasek. They painted many masterpieces on the faces of the youngsters who attended the event. I hope that everyone had a merry Christmas. I look forward to working with you in the weeks and months to come. Always know that if you have any questions, please give me a call or drop me an email.
2012 SPJST Camp Tee Shirt Design Contest “We need your good ideas and creativity!” I challenge all youth club members to participate in the camp tee shirt design contest. Remember the deadline is January 31. This year’s grand prize will be a $100 Walmart gift card and your design on the 2012 camp tee-shirt. All participants will receive two merit points and a participation certificate. We have many youth who are very creative and talented. This

Youth Development Workshop This year’s Youth Development Workshop will be a one-day workshop for all youth club members. The workshop will be held on February 25 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. Parents are invited to sit in on the informative sessions. We’ll be hosting the workshop at the Home Office in an effort to have it in a central location and make it closer for all participants. We are currently working on this workshop, and I will have more information in the February newsletter. President’s Volunteer Service Award The SPJST Youth Program is spon-

In addition to covering multiple topics of interest, participants will also be treated by popular demand to a fun “casino night.” Bring your lucky shirt and have some fun! Please mark your calendars; it is very important you attend this retreat. SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31, 2012, is the deadline to receive credit.
Mark Your Calendar: May 5 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2012 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2012. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something. When coming up with ideas for your project try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me.

Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day and online with Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, the Home office will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered their project online.

F.I.T.T. Principles Get active! It’s simple advice but it can be one of the most important things you can do to improve your current and future health. In 2006, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports celebrates its 50th anniversary. The program was founded in 1956 by President Eisenhower. Over the next year, our Vestnik Cross Training projects will be geared to providing information on getting in shape and learning how to participate in one or more of the President’s Challenge programs. To improve your fitness level and your chances of meeting the standards of the President’s Challenge, follow these principles of exercise: Frequency, Intensity, Type, and Time (F.I.T.T.)
FREQUENCY Set up a regular schedule for exercising. Try to accumulate at least one hour of activity daily with more vigorous workouts three to four days a week. You are likely to see improvements when you exercise regularly and have a schedule for exercise. Also, you are more likely to continue those workouts when you have an exercise schedule. I N T E N S I TY For your muscles to get stronger or your body to get fit, you must work harder when exercising than when you are at rest. Your heart should beat faster and your breathing should increase when you are performing aerobic exercise and when you are lifting weights. Make sure you work harder when you are exercising, but don't overdo it. Lifting too much weight or working out too hard can cause injuries. TYPE You need to exercise your body the same way that you are going to use it. For example, aerobic exercise will not build flexibility, and lifting weights will not increase your aerobic endurance. For flexibility, you must stretch. For aerobic capacity, you must increase your heart rate. For strength, you must work your muscles. TIME Gradually increase the number of times you do an exercise, the length of time that perform an exercise, and how hard you exercise. It generally takes six to eight weeks to see physical improvements, but you will feel better shortly after starting to exercise.

SPJST Rules of Conduct for Youth and Adults This year, SPJST added a new paragraph to the SPJST Rules of Conduct. Please inform the youth and their parents of this new paragraph. The paragraph added:
Search and Seizure SPJST reserves the right to inspect any youth’s belongings, suitcase, bags, bedding, etc. Such inspection may be done with or without notice and with or without cause. If youth refuses to submit to inspection when requested, then it shall be deemed an act of gross insubordination and shall be grounds to send youth home.
Please have your youth members and parents who participate with the youth, sign the new form and return to the Youth Department. There is no need to have our members sign this form each year as done in previous years. Once we have the Rules of Conduct in the office, we will mail a copy directly to the member’s parents to keep in their records. The original will be filed in the Youth Department. In Memoriam
In Memory of Gail Matus
Gail Bradburry Matus, age 52, of West, was taken peacefully to heaven early Saturday morning, December 3, 2011, at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Reverend Ed Karasek officiating. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Gail Matus The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 6 at Aderhold Funeral Home. Gail was born February 19, 1959, in Bossier City, Louisiana, to Ivan Curtis and Florence (Kirkpatrick) Bradburry. She was brought home to big sister Cathy then later was joined by baby sister Sherry and her pride and joy little brother Curtis Richard. Her daddy was in the United States Air Force so the family moved from Bossier City on to El Paso then to Abilene, followed by Warner Robbins, Georgia, Blair, Oklahoma, and finally upon Daddy’s retirement settled back to the family home state of Texas. Gail graduated from Connally High School in 1977. The happiest times of her life were raising her daughters, Heather and Karry. As a mom, Gail was involved in the girl’s school activities as head room mother and she was the very best at making birthdays and holidays the most special times for her family. As the years passed, she watched her little girls mature to fine young ladies who would ultimately give Gail the greatest gifts of all—her grandchildren. Gail met and married Jim Matus in 2002. Jim stepped into the role of husband and father, where he gave unselfishly of his love and caring spirit. Gail was Jim’s Princess. He loved and cared for her unconditionally. The more children, grandchildren, and family around Gail, the better she thrived. Her family enjoyed impromptu family reunions that would come together with just a couple of phone calls. The family as a whole thrived on the fun loving spirit of Gail and her siblings; if you ever had the privilege of spending time
with them, you felt the love and support of the entire group. The very meaning of her life was her family and friends. Gail worked for the McLennan County Court services for 17 years, and there, too, she gave of her caring spirit to each and every case that crossed her desk. Each case she filed was not just a job to her; those individuals that were in need and hurting were carried in Gail’s heart and never forgotten. At the courthouse, Gail enjoyed her extended family of co-workers. There would never be a baby shower, birthday, or any other special event that she would not be involved in to make that person feel special and loved. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West and Sokol West. Gail was Mrs. Claus for several years. She enjoyed photography, yard work, making jewelry, but most of all, she loved being Nanny and MiMi. Gail was preceded in death by her grandparents, Calvin Richard Bradburry, Edna Miller, and Dee and Bertha Kirkpatrick. Gail is survived by her husband of 10 years, Jimmy Matus of West; daughters Heather Roberson and Derek Barnes of Bosqueville and Karry Dornak and husband Jeff of Spring; stepson Dustin Matus of West; stepdaughter, Jennifer Kalina and fiancé Brian Walker of Lorena; grandchildren Hailey, Alana, Hanna, and Ava; grandson on the way, Aaden; parents Ivan Curtis and Florence Bradburry of Elm Mott; parents-in-law Raymond and Lill Matus; sisters Cathy Bradburry and Alvin Moravec and Sherry Matus and husband Ben, all of West; brother Curtis Richard “C.R.” Bradburry and Bruce Harrison of China Spring; brother-in-law Thomas Matus and wife Ruth Ann of Chalk Bluff; sisters-in-law Kathy Matus and Cindy Matus, both of West; nephews Chris Edwards, Clint Burrow, Keith Hutyra, Clayton Burrow, Garratt Matus, and Brannon Matus; nieces Christy Edwards, Kelly Hutyra, Whitney Dudik, Emily Matus, and Taylor Matus; her four-legged housemates, Maddison, Abby, and Belle; and many other close relatives and friends. Pallbearers were McLennan County Sheriff Deputies. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association; Susan G. Komen Foundation; or the charity of

Učme se Česky Let us Study Czech Lekce první Lesson 1 Česka abeceda Czech alphabet
The Czech language has one of the most phonetic alphabets of all in the Indo-European languages of the world. There are 31 characters plus q, x, and w which are used only in foreign words.
The letters of the Czech alphabet are patterned on the Latin alphabet which has been expanded by the use of diacritical marks, called čárka, kroužek, a háček to create additional sounds.
Get your friends or parents to help you with the pronunciation. Do them together. Clip and save each lesson, and compile them into notebook form if you desire. Set aside a regular time each week for the study of these lessons. The following is a list of the Czech letters that represent separate sounds in the language: Letters —Approximate Pronunciation in English
