Members are invited to this year’s SPJST Awards Banquet on
Saturday, January 28 at Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, located at 3303 North 3rd Street in Temple. Doors will open at 12 noon, and the program starts at 1 p.m. Many lodge members, sales agents, fraternalists of the year, and youth clubs will be recognized. All lodges are entitled to send their 2011 and 2012 officers to the banquet free of charge. The Home Office is requesting a head count on or before January 23. See next week’s Vestnik for complete banquet information and a list of the 2011 local lodge fraternalists of the year.
Tribute 2012 This year’s SPJST membership campaign is called “Tribute 2012” and pays special recognition to SPJST’s 115th birthday (1897 - 2012) and the Vestnik’s 100th birthday (1912 - 2012). The goal is to acquire 2,012 new members this year, and we need your help. Think about your friends, neighbors, work associates, and family members who are not SPJST members. Please invite them to join SPJST and experience the fraternalism and the proud history of this organization. Plus, you will be doing your friend or family member a favor by encouraging them to purchase life insurance which offers peace of mind. Referral cards are available from the Home Office, or you can refer some-
one at www.spjst.org. Your name will go into a monthly drawing for a Wal-mart gift card.
Vestnik’s 100th Anniversary The Vestnik is celebrating its 100th year! What a grand achievement! To celebrate this tremendous milestone, we will soon begin featuring tributes and continue throughout the year honoring and remembering our past SPJST. If you have a special photo or story from SPJST’s past that you would like to share in an upcoming Vestnik, please send it to me. Let’s commemorate this special anniversary in a big way! And, coming soon — all available past Vestniks will be readily accessible online for research. Thanks to Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) for their tremendously generous contribution of hundreds of volunteer hours to make this a reality. I am beyond excited about this fantastic historical and genealogical tool that we will soon release during this 100th anniversary of SPJST’s official weekly newspaper—the Vestnik.
Quote of the Week “Most of us can remember a time when a birthday — especially if it was one’s own — brightened the world as if a second sun has risen.” —Robert Staughton Lynd

of the week he was either in the field or at the barber shop. Glen was finally born November 8, 1947. Hilda and Alphonse adored raising their son out on the farm, and Glen learned everything there was to know about living the country life. When Glen became old enough, he started to help out in the fields as well and recalls his mother always carrying a full sack of cotton around or chopping. Then, at lunch time, Hilda would go in and prepare a huge dinner for them to eat. In the early 50s, Alphonse’s father became ill a few years after the passing of his wife, so Hilda and Alphonse had Frank move in with them and took care of him several months before staying with his other son Emil until he passed. Glen and Irene moved to the Blahuta farm and built a house where Alphonse’s parents had previously lived. After 40 years they have four children, Jackie, Steven, Keith, and Ashley. Hilda and Alphonse celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1983. They continued to live on the farm and help take care of and support their grandchildren, attend Saint Paul Luthern church, and attend various functions in the community. They spent many evenings at the ball fields and school gyms watching the grandkids play volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, and track. snickerdoodles and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies in her yellow Tupperware container in the cabinet. And nothing beat her homemade bread with butter and syrup on top! She would cut the bread into little pieces and called them “rabbits” and have them hop into your mouth! She was good at getting all the grandkids into eating everything; she even pulled a few tricks to get us to eat something we otherwise wouldn’t have. Her apricot kolaches were like none before, and pies were amazing as well! You know grandmas are always the best cooks, but she had to have been the best out of all the grandmas around! All the grandkids learned how to play a mean game of dominos with Grandma and Grandpa. But they didn’t have any mercy on you when playing—the grandkids always seemed to lose! Cards and checkers were also games to play next door with Grandma and Grandpa. In 1996, after 63 years of marriage, Alphonse passed away. In the same

month, Hilda’s oldest grandchild Jackie married Raul Garcia-Ramaeu. In January 2000, Hilda received her first great-grandchild Kristen, then followed by Caleb in 2002. Keith married Ammie Hudson in May 2010, and in February 2011, Hilda received angreat-grandson, Keaton other Alphonse. In August 2011, Hilda was able to see her last grandchild Ashley, marry Shane Pavlock, and they currently reside in her old home on the farm. After going strong for 100 years, Hilda has lived at Cambridge Square in Rosenberg since 2003. She continues to enjoy playing dominoes, bingo, and watching her favorite show Wheel of Fortune. Hilda continues to attend the Senior Citizen Luncheon in Wallis to visit with hometown friends and play dominos. And, everyone there knows if there is lemon pie, she has first dibs on it. After all, being the oldest has its advantages! Happy 100th birthday, Grandma! —SPJST—

Hiram Dixon announces candidacy for Supreme Lodge Vice President
I would like to take this opportunity to announce my intention to seek the office of Supreme Lodge Vice President at the upcoming convention in June. I have the leadership qualities and the experience to help SPJST meet the challenges we will face in the coming years. I began my career in 1979. For the past 32 years, I have worked with commercial and fraternal life insurance companies—mostly in management and agent development. Through years of classroom studies and market place productions, I earned several life insurance designations, including Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), Fraternal Insurance Council Fellow (FICF), and Certified Fraternal Field Manager (CFFM). I have also earned many company and industry honors and awards, including President’s Club awards and Quad Cities Agent of the Year. In my fraternal experience, I have served as an officer in the Quad Cities Fraternal Congress, vice president and president of the Oklahoma Fraternal Congress and the Oklahoma Fraternal Insurance Council. I currently serve as President of Lodge 87, Temple. Working with SPJST Supreme Lodge officers and directors, I know that I have ability to help lead SPJST into a bright future. It is my belief that we must grow our market share of business and enhance our distribution system (the manner in which we take our product to market) while controlling the cost of doing business. I realize that we have a need to advance our technologies within SPJST yet at the same time, it is imperative that we hold onto our core values of the past. We must maintain our Czech heritage and ensure that the upcoming generations

know who we are and of SPJST’s storied past. My career as SPJST State Field Representative began in 2007. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work in several areas of Texas. I have helped with and participated in many fraternal activities. I also find great satisfaction in working with the Fort Hood November 5, 2009 Memorial. As a Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Army, this project means a lot to me and is close to my heart. I am confident that my work ethics, honesty, integrity, and experience will help lead SPJST into the future. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I look forward to visiting with you. Lodge 18, Elgin: 2011 - a year to remember
Here we are . . . another year gone, but SPJST is still here. 2011 was a hard year with all the drought, fires, unemployment, etc. Thanks to a fraternal such as SPJST, many were helped. SPJST Lodge 18 is no exception. We donated the hall use for benefits and fundraisers. This is what fraternalism is all about — working with each other. Sometimes, we forget we are all striving for the same goal. Many of our regulars are getting up in age. What will happen when we no longer can do all the necessary work?

We look forward to another great year of busy activities in 2012.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth: Sammy succeeds!
Recently, I competed at the 2011 NFL Novice Debate Tournament held at St. Mary’s Hall in San Antonio. This is my first year in debate, and this was only my second competition after several months of preparation. I was scheduled to compete with an upper classman in P u b l i c Forum, but there was a last minute change. My new partner was a freshman. We were a little nervous knowing we had to compete against more experienced teams but knew we had trained hard. We finished the tournament winning three of four matches – good enough to finish in third place, which qualified us for a tournament at Harvard. I stayed for the awards ceremony held for first place finishers and was shocked to hear my name called. Although we finished third as a team, I was named top speaker of my division and awarded an Outstanding Debater award. I am busy preparing for my next tournament and look forward to the possibility of going to Harvard. Fraternally, Sammy Hoggard Vice President —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: if a picture says a thousand words . . .
. . . I’ve said 10 million. This year, I am enjoying combining my love of photography with school. I signed up for yearbook class and that placed me in the middle of many school activities. I enjoy “press” privileges on the sidelines of sporting events; the cheerleaders always have a smile and pose for me; and I get to interview students for surveys and quotes to add to the yearbook. Since I have my own professional camera, I am always catching candid shots of the life of a Churchill High School student. I am enjoying working with layout and design and influencing the book that will define many students’ memories of high school. I just purchased a “fish eye” for my camera with my Christmas money so I have been experimenting with my new capabilities.
This is a picture of Christmas lights on the San Antonio Riverwalk with my new “fish eye.”
Keep smiling – because I’m still clicking! Fraternally, Lane Hoggard, President —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth selected for special program
Mom asked me to get the mail, and as I glanced through it, I noticed an envelope from the middle school addressed to “The Parent of Amanda Hoggard.” I stared at the words in confusion. I couldn’t think of any reason the school would be writing my mother. I asked Mom if I could open it. When she nodded, I tore into it and began to read outloud. The letter stated that I was qualified to participate in the Duke University Talent Identification Program Seventh Grade Talent Search based on my performance in the 95th percentile for my reading TAKS scores. As part of the program, they provide specialized training for preparing for the SAT exam and request that I take the SAT college entrance exam during my seventh grade year. The program will then provide customized help in preparing for the SAT that counts for college admission. I am so excited to be taking the exam and preparing for my future. It is a real honor to be recognized in reading and have such an opportunity. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Exhibition explores Art Nouveau and the Czech artist who inspired others
More than 230 rare works by one of the world’s most famous artists will be on view for the opening exhibition beginning July 14, 2012, at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library (http://www.ncsml.org/) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Alphonse Mucha: Inspirations of Art Nouveau, features paintings, jewelry, sculptures, and lithographs, is coming direct from the Mucha Foundation in Prague and London. Not since 1999 has an exhibit of this size and caliber appeared in the United States, and it is the first of its type to appear in the Midwest region. “We have been working with the Mucha Foundation for more than a year to bring this stunning exhibit to the U.S., and we are particularly thrilled that it will be the inaugural exhibition for the opening of this national museum,” said President/CEO Gail Naughton. “This is a once-in-alifetime opportunity to view the lush beauty of Mucha’s flowing, elegant artwork, which is recognized by people all over the world.” Alphonse Mucha: Inspirations of Art Nouveau is divided into six sections and explores Mucha not just as the father of art nouveau, but also Mucha’s Moravian roots, his family, his photography and his devotion to the Slav people. The featured artist, Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939), is most often remembered for the prominent role he played at the turn of the century in the shaping of art nouveau. He was born in Ivančice, Moravia; worked as a painter and studied art in Austria and Germany, before moving to Paris in 1887. Art nouveau is French for “new art,” which influenced much of the decorative arts during the mid 1880s to 1910. Not only glassware, jewelry, painting, textiles, and pottery but also graphic work and architecture were transformed by the wave of this modern style. Artists at the time drew their inspiration from both organic and geometric forms to develop a sumptuous yet natural approach united by its distinctive curvilinear elements. In 1910, Mucha returned to Moravia, where he dedicated the remainder of his life producing the Slav Epic, a series of 20 paintings depict-
Page 21
ing the history of the Slav people. Visitors to the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library will be able to enjoy the exhibition through December 31, 2012, after which many of the artworks will travel to Japan. Samples of the works included are:
Gismonda, 1894, color lithograph • This is one of Mucha’s most important works. It was his first poster of the actress Sarah Bernhardt and shot him to overnight fame in Paris. It revolutionized poster design with its long narrow shape, muted colors and the near life-size image of the “Divine Sarah.” Parisians paid poster hangers for copies, or simply stole the posters right off the streets. Sarah Bernhardt was so pleased with Mucha’s work that she offered him a five year contract to produce posters as well as stage and costume designs. La Dame aux Camellias, 1896, color lithograph • Sarah Bernhardt starred in the play by Alexandre Dumas. The English translation is Camille. White camellia flowers dominate the design.
Princess Hyacinth, 1911, color lithograph • The poster advertised a ballet starring Andula Sedláčková, who posed as the model. The ballet tells the story of a blacksmith who dreams his daughter is a princess kidnapped by a sorcerer. Mucha incorporated the tools of the blacksmith, a crown, the instruments of sorcery, and hyacinths in the design.
Moravian Teachers Choir, 1911, color lithograph • The Moravian Teachers Choir performed many types of songs, including folk music by Moravian composer Leoš Janáček. Mucha and Janáček knew each other as boys. The girl in the poster wears a folk costume from Kyjov, Moravia. Self Portrait, c.1898 • Mucha was an avid photographer. He took documentary shots of street life in Munich, Paris and Moscow; portraits of family and friends; landscape studies; and studies of models to inform later paintings. In this photograph, Mucha wears a Russian shirt, an example of his passion for Slavic motifs.
Primrose and Feather, 1899 • La Primevere (The Primrose) and La Plume (The Feather) comprise one

of Mucha’s best panel sets. The figures are symbolic complete with the artist’s customary halos around their heads and diadems in their hair.
