management philosophies that will serve us into the future. We’re excited about this year’s awards banquet in that it provides us with a great opportunity to recognize our past achievements as well as identify some of the opportunities that lay ahead for SPJST. It should be an enjoyable and even stimulating day,” says Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, who will be introducing the new SPJST Model Lodge Program during the event. All 2011 and 2012 lodge officers and winning sales agents and their spouse/guest are invited to attend free of charge. Lodge members are also invited to attend. Their cost for the barbecue dinner is $10 per person. To facilitate attendance, every lodge will have mileage paid for at least one vehicle. Lodges that will be receiving incentive awards will be authorized mileage for up to two vehicles. Lodge presidents and secretaries received a letter last week informing them if their lodge will be receiving mileage for an extra vehicle. Award-winning sales agents have also been

PJST announced its 2012 membership program recently. “Tribute 2012: Happy Birthday, SPJST!” is the theme, and the program will reflect on yesterday, believe in today’s progress, and achieve for tomorrow.

“A strong emphasis will continue to be on families,” Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride says. “Evaluating current members’ life insurance coverage and recruiting family of current members will continue to be a priority. Recognizing 100 percent SPJST families and generations of SPJST members will also be a continued focus.” The program includes incentives for members, lodges, lodge officers, youth clubs, and sales agents.

Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

Thanks, Fraternalists!

This week’s Vestnik features the 2011 SPJST Local Lodge Fraternal-

ists of the Year on pages 8 to 13. We recognize 17 dedicated lodge and community volunteers. Congratulations —and thank you— to each one of them for their service. One of these members will be honored as State Fraternalist of the Year at the SPJST Awards Banquet on Saturday, January 28 at the Frank W. Mayborn Center in Temple. Four honorable mentions will also be recognized. We are recognizing 17 this year. Lodges, let’s strive to double or even triple that number of individuals next year. It’s never too early to start thinking of someone to nominate for your local lodge fraternalist for 2012. The deadline to submit the entry form will be in December.

Thanks, Lodge 160! It was so nice to visit with the good members at Lodge 160, San Angelo who gathered for their annual meeting on January 8 in Wall, Texas. The lodge hosted a delicious meal for members followed by the meeting and election of officers. Deceased members were honored with a candlelight memorial service. Thanks, Lodge 160, for a wonderful time! See pictures in next week’s Vestnik. New SPJST Cookbook Have you purchased your copy of the new SPJST cookbook—SPJST Tasty Traditions? Sales have been great! Thanks to each and every person who has bought a cookbook. We appreciate the sales. Sincere thanks to the lodges and youth clubs who have purchased boxes to help us sell. The cookbook features 700 pages of more than 1,400 recipes. I love all of the stories cookbook buyers

have been sharing with us on the recipes they are trying. I have yet to hear about a bad recipe because they are all good and delicious! There really is something for everyone in this cookbook. I love recipes, and David loves to cook. It’s a great combination, and this cookbook really came in handy for us during the holidays. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at my sister and brother-in-law’s home on Christmas Eve. One of the wonderful dishes was green bean casserole—something that we were planning to prepare for Christmas Day lunch at my mom and dad’s home where most of us would be gathering again. Instead of eating green bean casserole two days in a row, we decided to consult SPJST Tasty Traditions. Surely, we thought, there would be some other “green bean” creation that we could put together on Christmas morning. Thanks to Jennifer McCarthy of Lodge 187, Round Rock for submitting “Green Bean/Corn Casserole”—and for saving our day with a unique, simple, and tasty dish. It was wonderful! Cookbooks will be available at the SPJST Awards Banquet on January 28 in Temple. Colleen Jenke will be accepting cash, checks, and credit cards. If you or your lodge would like to pick up a box of 20 or several boxes, please give me a call. State FAC Chester Jenke will also meet you at the Home Office on Saturday morning if you would like to come by and pick up boxes, or we can bring them to you at the banquet. Cookbooks are $15 each ($18 each if we mail them to you). Cookbook proceeds will benefit Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and SPJST Education and Nature Center.

Lodge 24, Cyclone reporter shares thanks

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Melanie and Katherine for all their help and support in 2011. Sometimes, I’m not sure if I have something worded just right. Melanie has always

been there to help me out. And, the pictures from the Christmas party were great. Thank you very much. For instance, ‘worded’, is that even a word? Anyway, I appreciate all your help. Theresa Klecka, Reporter —SPJST—

Through his business, he has donated thousands of dollars of advertising, signage, and employee time to assist local charities. Nicholas runs a program at church for young adults directing devotionals and guiding them through the transitional years from high school through college. SPJST Scholarship Deadline Approaching - February 1

Dear Members, One of the benefits SPJST offers to its members is the Scholarship Program. In 2011, 46 General Scholarships and 10 Leadership Grants were awarded. In addition, at the 2011 State Youth Achievement Day, seven District Merit Awards, one State Merit Award, and two Royalty Grants were awarded for a total of 66 scholarships and grants presented for the year. Since the program’s inception, more than $1 million has been awarded. General and Technical Scholarships are funded through SPJST’s annual allocation, through voluntary contributions received from our 100 Pennies Drive, and memorial donations received throughout the year. The number of scholarships given each year depends on how much we receive in donations and the annual allocation already in force. Donations are tax deductible. The Society also offers several endowed scholarships in mem-

ory of past members. Endowed scholarships are funded privately and/or by various organizat i o n a l fundraising efforts. Applications for scholarships are sent out from September through January upon request. The youth are looking forward to the District Two Skating party which will be held on Saturday, February 11 at Temple’s new skating rink, “Wheels Family Skating”(formally Skate Haven). The time is 10 a.m. to 12 noon with pizza to follow. Lynnette shared with the youth an article which she found about Czech cartoons. “Vecernicek” is a children’s cartoon that brings short fairy tales to little

Czech or Slovak children every evening. During Communism, this was a special time for kids, since at that time, the television selection was very poor. The program has been broadcast for more than 40 years. It is televised everyday in the evening when the children are supposed to go to bed. Each part of a three-week series last for about seven to 10 minutes. The format has been unchanged for decades. It is about a little boy (Vecernicek) in a car turning into a

wooden horse and finally into a bike. The boy always starts out with a “Good evening!” (Dobry vecer) and a “Good night!” (Dobrou noc!) to end the program. In today’s global world, there are many ways for Czech and Slovak children to watch cartoons, fairy tales, or other shows appropriate to their ages. However, Vecernicek is a special one. It is old, original, and it reminds the older generation of the times when they were children and spent 10 minutes a day in front of a black and white or color television to connect the “world” during the confusing and troubled time in the Czech history. What a neat story. I hope you enjoy this article. It would be interesting to see how many of you have heard of “Vecernicek” (little eveninger). Dolores Skrabanek gave the bar report for December. She and Calvin thank the many people who have helped them work behind the bar over the last several years. Thank you, Dolores and Calvin, for your years of being bar chairmen. The both of you have done a great job keeping everyone happy with a cold one. We appreciate your hard work. May you both enjoy the time off, and good luck in training your truck not to turn into Star Hall’s parking lot every Saturday and the many other days. Entertainment Chairpersons are Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek. Thanks to both of you for taking the position. Lodge 172 Pasadena supports Officer Santa

Lodge 172, Pasadena members collected toys for the Officer Santa program that benefits needy children in the Pasadena area. Pasadena Police Officer B. Keene visited Lodge 172 in December to collect our toy donations and thank members for helping with the program. I would like to share this article from The Pasadena Citizen News that was posted December 21, 2011, at www.yourhoustonnews.com. The article was written by Jeri Martinez. This shows what a difference our toy donations made to many Pasadena children and also the appreciation from Officer Santa organizers.

Officer Santa provides Christmas for Pasadena children By Jeri Martinez Christmas came a few days early for some Pasadena children on Wednesday when officers from the Pasadena Police Department delivered toys to their houses. The Officer Santa program started 26 years ago and delivers toys that were donated by area residents for children who many not have a Christmas. Sgt. John Bangilan of the Community Services Division said when the program started in 1985, they were able to help 10 families.

Page 22

This year, over 330 children received toys through the Officer Santa Program, which is about 15 percent more than last year. Bangilan said by the end of the day, he expected the number to go up and they did have a reserve of more toys just in case. “We partnered with schools and other organizations who held food drives along with donating gift cards for food,” he said. They also saw a need for more food and clothes, which were found on the wish lists from the children. About 20 police officers donated their time to deliver these toys to the families. Even with the economy being down, they are still seeing the support from the community for their program. “Thank you for participating because with you we wouldn’t be able to serve the kids out there that wouldn’t have a good Christmas,” said Bangilan.

Thank you to everyone from Lodge 172, Pasadena who donated a toy and helped with the 2011 Officer Santa program. Fraternally, Robert Mayfield, President —SPJST—

My fingers are stiff; my nose is blue The weather is right for some warm stew

With bleary eyes and a runny nose I wheeze and sneeze Like my old Ford truck I need a shot of anti-freeze

My singlewide home is not much in such a cold storm And doublewide 50-year wives care less if you’re warm

No hot shot plumber will take me for a ride I’ll just drain the plumbing on my single wide

I am hoping for a warm and early spring And the sprouting of seed that it will bring

By James L. Lee, III, CPA

Social Security is a lot like the ozone layer—we all know it’s there now, and we count on it being there in the future. Yet most people don’t know much more about it than that. Here’s a short list of interesting facts about Social Security.

(1) Social Security benefits do James L. Lee, III not automatically start coming in the mail the first day of Normal Retirement Age. You must apply for it. The easiest way is to set up an appointment with the local Social Security office or call 1-800-7721213. (2) To get an official statement of all the earnings recorded in your Social Security account, an estimate of your current disability and death benefits, and an estimate of future retirement benefits, fill out Form No. 7004 Request for Social Security Statement, obtainable at your local office.

! "

SPJST Financial University

(3) If you do not find and correct errors in your Social Security record within three years, they become part of your permanent record. Therefore, you might want to check on them every 3 years or so.

(4) You can work during retirement, but if you earn too much it will reduce the size of the benefits you are receiving from age 62 up to your Normal Retirement Age. The limits on such earnings are currently $14,160 for 2011. Benefits are reduced by $1 for every $2 that you earn over this amount. After you attain your Normal Retirement Age, you may work as much as you want with no reduction in benefits, although they may become taxable if you earn too much. (5) You can increase the size of your retirement benefit by delaying collecting your benefits and by remaining on the job past full retirement age. This higher benefit comes from extra earnings toward your account and a credit awarded for this patience, ranging

from 3 percent to 8 percent of your benefit depending on your date of birth.

(6) For people born after 1937, Normal Retirement Age will increase. For example, if you were born in 1940, full retirement age is 65 and 6 months; born in 1950, it is 66. Anybody born in 1960 or later will be eligible at age 67.

(7) Social Security disability benefits do not continue past Normal Retirement Age. The month before you attain normal retirement age, the disability benefits are automatically converted to retirement benefits.

(8) There is a limit to the amount of benefits that can be paid on each Social Security record called the Maximum Family Benefit, generally around 150 percent to 180 percent of the worker’s benefit. If this limit is exceeded, the family benefits are reduced. (9) Ex-spouses, widows and divorced widows may all be eligible for benefits on a spouse’s record. Provided the requirements are met, they may even all be collecting on the same worker’s record.

(10) There are two Social Security trust funds: one is used to finance retirement and survivors benefits and the other is used to finance the disability program. Money not used to pay current benefits is invested only in U. S. Government Treasury bonds.

Social Security is a significant resource for many retired individuals. Spend some time with your financial planner learning about what part these benefits should play in your retirement planning future.

Dear Awesome Person who is Reading This, I’ve been really busy lately. Let’s start off with Christmas. The first Christmas was at our house with Mima, Paw-paw, and Uncle Robert. I got a lot of awesome stuff. The stuff I got from my Mima and Paw-paw is a lot of makeup (yay!), hair brushes (awesome!), some money (cha-ching), and a volleyball (double awesome). Oh, and how could I forget, I also got a lot of markers (doodling rocks). The thing I got from Uncle Robert was a lady bug pillow pet (ssswweeettt!). The thing I got from my uncle Michael was a football (hurry! go long! touchdown and the crowd goes wild!). At the second Christmas, I got too much to list, but I’ll say some stuff. From my uncle Tim, I got the laptop that I am writing this letter on. When I got it, it was an “OMG” moment. It’s really kewl (that means cool). I have so much stuff on it. From my Aunt Delores and my cousin Rene, I got a lot of jewelry from JCP (I gotta show off my bling bling!). The stuff I got at my third Christmas was a pretty necklace from my cousins, and some absolutely adorable headbands from my aunt Irene. The stuff I got from Santa was a purple bean bag chair, cute headbands, really kewl designer brand shirts and jeans, some designer brand boots, an iHome (speakers for your iPod/iPhone), and a lot more other stuff. This was a good Christmas. After Christmas, I went hunting for the first time in seven years. I shot a wild boar. It was really gross/fun/stinky. My dad thought there was no way I had the heart to shoot an animal. Wrong! It was really kewl because I got him on the first shot. And, also because that was the first animal I’ve ever shot. The first day my mom, dad, and I sat and rotted in a blind for about an hour. We decided to go back to our cabin because my dad’s phone rang. He said, “April, if that would have been your phone ringing, I would be busting your rear.” He didn’t mean it though. The second day I woke up around three in the morning to go hunting with my Mima. It was so cold I could have cried. If I did cry, I’m positive my tears would turn into ice. We sat and waited for five hours and didn’t see

27

any sign of life. When I got back to the cabin and took off my gloves, I couldn’t feel my hands. My hands were red and even purple in some spots—same thing with my feet. The third and final day, I shot the boar. Third times the charm!

This is proud me with my hog. Czech out my headband. You got to have your peace signs when you’re going hunting! Lol!

Peace out, April Dvorak, age 11 —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth earns first chair in band

Dear Earthlings, I just wanted to share some news so ... . . . After Christmas, I went to Town East Mall. We went to a lot of stores. One of the stores was Charming Charlies. That store is like heaven on earth. I feel sorry for my parents because every five seconds, me—or most of the time, my sister was saying “I want it!” When we got home, we had a lot of stuff. That was a shopping spree I will never forget Change the subject! Here is how school’s going. Awesome! I am a straight A student (always have been). Student Council is the best ever, and WKNN (broadcasting journalism) is awesome. Oh, how on earth did I forget? I’m first chair in band! I play the clarinet. It’s really fun but sometimes it’s a challenge. Well, that’s all I gotta say. Your awesome friend, April Dvorak, age 11 —SPJST—

Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club reports on January meeting

On January 8, 2012, SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club met at the lodge hall. Olivia and Grace Schwertner presented the colors and led the pledges and motto. A moment of silence was observed. Roll call of officers by Vice President Sutton Schwertner showed Richard Rollwitz and Cammi Teplicek absent. The youth leader welcomed all parents and guests. The reading of the minutes was disbursed. The treasurer’s report was read. Nancy Schwertner received a letter from the VFW Post thanking the youth club for helping to place flags on veterans’ graves at all three cemeteries on Veterans Day. There was some discussion on future projects including painting Easter eggs, Join Hands Day project, getting ideas for individual craft projects for District Youth Achievement Day, and a fun day at one of the spring meetings. We were happy to have District Four Youth Counselor Janice Stevens as our special guest. Youth leaders reminded members of the next “call in” meeting on January 9 at 7 p.m. and on February 6 at 7 p.m. Members present were encouraged

to write a letter to the Vestnik to express their opinions about their youth club and the happenings. Members were also encouraged to remember their “secret pals” on Valentine’s Day. Sarah and Magen Booher brought a gallon of pop-tops. Way to go, girls! All members were reminded to bring their pop-tops to the next meeting. The youth leaders helped members work on projects, making a candy necklace, and making valentines for our senior members. Some really neat valentines were made, and the necklaces were eaten before some were finished! Thank you, Ms. Stevens, for furnishing pizza and to Assistant Youth Leader Diana for the Twinkies. Snacks were enjoyed by all in attendance.

Next Meeting—February 12 The next meeting will be February 12 at 4 p.m. at the lodge hall. As youth leader, I would like to encourage all parents to attend our meetings and say thank you to the parents who are attending for their interest in this organization and youth children. As leaders, we are counting on your continued support to help keep our Club active as we will work to help your children grow into productive adults. All of our meetings are open to the public, and we welcome you at anytime. Beverly Teplicek Youth Leader —SPJST—

2011 - 2012 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the first and second quarters (June to November 2011). This is total merit points for the 2011-2012 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during the June to November 2011 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities. What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards. Contest Dates June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards * First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division.* Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards* First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

1. Conjugation of the verb míti to have:

Singular 1st person mám — I have 2nd person máš — you have 3rd person má — he/she/it has Plural máme — we have máte — you have mají — they have

2. The Noun in Czech All Czech nouns are classified as being either masculine, feminine, or neuter. If they end in a hard or neutral consonant, they are classed as masculine; if they end in “a”, they are feminine; and if they end in “o”, they are neuter. Therefore, the noun “park” is masculine; “lampa” is feminine; and “okno” is neuter. 3. The Demonstrative Adjectives The demonstrative adjective “that” is translated in Czech by ten, ta, to. Ten is always used with masculine nouns; ta with feminine nouns; and to with neuter nouns. * * * * * Homework

1. Copy the expressions and vocabulary into a notebook and memorize them. 2. Memorize the conjugation of míti - “to have.” 3. Classify the nouns that are given in the vocabulary as to their gender. 4. Place the correct demonstrative adjective ten, ta, to before each noun in the vocabulary. Example:

ten park, ta lampa, and to okno. * * * * *

Read the following verse, and see if you can translate it:

TCGS to present “They Came in Ships”

“They Came in Ships” is the theme for the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Annual Meeting, to be held Saturday, January 28, 2012, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at the Caldwell Civic Center in Caldwell, Texas. Doug Kubicek will bring a new perspective to the immigration of Czechs to Texas with his presentation: “Tradition and Reality, The Gulf Coast Steamship “Packet” Companies and Our Czech Ancestors.” The foremost expert in Czech Passenger Lists, Leo Baca, will lend his expertise in helping persons identify the ship on which their ancestors came to America in his presentation “Czech Immigration Passenger Lists.” Conference favorite, Patrick Janis, is always looking for new ways to help our members with their family research. His presentation, “Using Free Online Digital Newspaper Archives for Genealogical Research” is his latest find. TCGS is proud to have Duwain Pingenot present the audio/video pres-

Page 37

entation “Coming to America, Migl Reunion Reflections.” One of our special presentations will be offered by Melanie Zavodny, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communications for SPJST. Her presentation “SPJST Vestnik – Archiving the Past for the Future” promises to offer the membership insight into how to use the vast research resources offered by the Vestnik. The year 2012 is an important milestone for the Vestnik; it will celebrate its 100th birthday (1912 - 2012). TCGS is proud to be a part of this momentous occasion. The Vestnik has long been an excellent resource for historical and genealogical research for persons of Czech ancestry, and TCGS has supported SPJST in an effort to make past Vestniks available online for research. “Captain” John Gantt will present the first “Ancestral Ship Reunion.” This interactive presentation promises to be not only informative but a lot of fun. Our special entertainment will be music from the 1850s and 1860s, performed by The Frontier Brigade Band. The Band will be wearing uniforms patterned after the 1859 Marine Band and playing over the shoulder saxhorns similar to the actual brass instruments of the military bands of the Civil War era. Full registration for the entire day’s events, including lunch, for TCGS members is $30; full registration for non-members is $40. Registration at the door will be $45 for all attendees. For registration and questions, please contact Bennie Stasny (512) 836-8084 or email blstasny@aol.com. —SPJST—
