Fraternal Bowling Tournament: February 11 in New Braunfels

SPJST bowlers will compete with members from several other Texas fraternals in the Eighth Annual Fraternal Alliance of Texas Bowling Tournament set for Saturday, February 11 at Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas. Fiesta Lanes is located behind HEB at 1202 Huisache Avenue. Teams will consist of five members—any combination of men and women, and each participant will bowl three games in the tournament, which begins at 12 noon. Individual entries will be accepted (you do not have to have a full team in order to enter the tournament). And, lodges may enter multiple teams. Pre-registration is $20 per bowler, or $100 per team of five before February 3. Walk-ins will be accepted from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament provided lanes are available. The cost for walk-ins will also be $20 per person. Bowlers must be a member, at least 16 years of age, in good standing of one of the fraternal organizations participating in the tournament. Awards will be presented to the top three males and top three females for

high series and high game. Winning organization will be determined by pin fall. The total pin fall for each organization will be divided by the total number of participants for that organization to determine an average for the three games bowled. The organization with the highest average will be declared the winner. Proceeds from the tournament and a silent auction will go to the Fraternal Alliance of Texas Scholarship Fund. Active graduating high school senior members of a fraternal belonging to Fraternal Alliance of Texas are currently eligible to apply for the scholarship. Special Valentine’s Day silent auction items and door prizes will be awarded. Gift items for the silent auction will be appreciated. For more information about the tournament, contact State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke (210) 413-3053 or Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578. Forms are available online at www.spjst.org in the fraternal section. Tournament registration can also be completed online. —SPJST—

New Mortgage Rates Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska shared exciting news on mortgage rates recently. Members with high interest rate

SPJST mortgage loans have an opportunity to have their interest rate modified to the interest rate currently offered. The loan must be current with all payments and taxes be paid to date. The modification program is currently available until March 31, 2012. There are no closing costs or fees for modifying a qualifying SPJST mortgage. Residential mortgages with maturities up to 20 years can be modified to 4.75 percent. Residential mortgages with terms over 20 years can be modified to 5 percent. There is also an offer to modify rates on SPJST farm and commercial mortgage loans to rates offered on new farm and commercial mortgage loans. For information, call the SPJST Mortgage Loan Department (254) 773-1575 or email annp@spjst.com. Be sure to take advantage of this special offer before it expires on March 31, 2012.

Committee Meetings On January 14, the Finance, Insurance, and Publication Committees met at the Home Office, and the By-Law Committee met on January 15. The committees are preparing for the upcoming convention. The Publication Committee presented several recommendations to the Supreme Lodge last week. One of these recommendations includes publishing a special Vestnik this year that will commemorate SPJST’s 115th year and the Vestnik’s 100th year. We will soon be asking each lodge to help us to update their history to be included in this special edition. So please start compiling your data and information! More details in next week’s Vestnik. Cookbook collector says latest cookbook is one of her favorites

I received your cookbook for my birthday from my brother Edwin and his wife Peggy of Lake Jackson. I have two large bookcases of recipe books, but this one is one of my

favorites. I was raised at El Campo and see recipes in there from El Campo, Hillje, Taiton Seguin, and other familiar places and names. My daughter Dr. Pam Tackett loves cooking and is a collector also. So I know she will enjoy the book, too. Thank you’ll! Edith Laird Johnson —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The meeting of the Fort Worth Friendship Club was held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at St. Thomas Parish Hall. Julie Chasse, friend of Felma Smith, was our guest. The meeting was called to order by our newly elected President Betty Krenek who welcomed everyone. Since a flag was not displayed in the dining room, we sang, “God Bless America” in lieu of saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Our newly elected Vice President Alene Kercho read some thoughts for the day which were enjoyed by all. A moment of silence was observed for Paula Hall’s husband, Jo Ann Wilcox’s grandson, and Marty Ann Kozel’s sister all who died since the last meeting. Martha Boenisch, Mary Ann’s sister, was a longtime Friendship Club member. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to these families. Special thanks went out to Mary Ann Krivanek, past president, for doing such a splendid job for the past four years. Mary Ann Kozel, our former treasurer, was absent due to the death of her sister, and she also did a splendid job for the past 10 years. It was so nice to have Maria Gill back with us after a long absence. It was also nice that Camille Bolcer is coming to our meetings now. These two ladies always sat at a table with Lucille Kret, Nettie Naugle, and Tom Konen. Now, we need to get Nettie and Tom back. You all have been missed. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Jo Ann Wilcox gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. A thank you letter was read from the Czech Heritage Museum, Temple, for our donation to them in honor of the Věstník staff for always publishing our articles each month. I reported on my visit with Merel Kovar, our former longtime secretary, who lives in an assisted living facility on Hulen Street. Merel wanted to know all about her Friendship Club friends and sends greetings to all. I further reported on receiving a note from Willie Mae Becan who wrote that she is curtailing her driving and will not be coming to our meetings. She said, “That’s what 90s do to a person.” I also received a phone call from Rose Cuba who now lives in Wichita Falls. She said that she loves it there, and it is so nice to be close to her two sisters. She called to tell me she picked

up her church pictorial directory before she moved. Lodge 92 Ladies Circle President Marlene Bass and I wondered if Rose had gotten her copy; we were so glad to know that she had. Rose sends greetings to all. Then, I showed off the Christmas card received from Melanie of the Vestnik. Thanks for the angel ornament and calendar. I have taped the calendar next to my computer so it is already being used. President Betty discussed having new membership booklets since we have several new members and several other changes. She further asked for volunteers to serve on a phone committee. Door prizes were donated by Paula Arsenault, Sharron Connelly, Helen Skrasek, Felma Smith, Libbie Vrla, and Mary Agnes Ward. We had lots of happy winners then we had show-andtell. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Paula Arsenault and Julie Chasse. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to January celebrants Monalee Hattendorf, Lillie Kosarek, Betty Landsfeld, Kitty Rippen, Lois Smith, and Darlene Tompkins. May you all have many more. Hostesses Sharron Connelly, Kathy Ormsbee, and Libbie Vrla were thanked, and we want to thank Rose Ann Spann for the snow-theme table decorations which looked so nice. Following the meeting, grace was said and a fried chicken lunch was enjoyed. Then games were played, and a good time was had by all. News Congratulations go out to Jared Patoskie, Mary Ann Kozel’s grandson, who graduated in December from Texas A&M. Mary Ann spent the week between Christmas and New Year’s with her daughters Donna and family in Sugarland, and Karen and family in Allen. She enjoyed this time with them very much. I enjoyed receiving a phone call from Annie Whitsell. She said that she still takes communion to the nursing home, and her friends drive her there. Other friends take her to church each Sunday, has a special pew, and Father goes to her to give her communion. Annie also said that Harold Balvin has his good days and bad days. His son and grandson take care of him which she said, is a full time job. I stopped in to see Betty Landsfeld the other day. She is doing well following her surgery and sends best

wishes to all her Friendship Club friends. She had a birthday on the 13th so she had a busy week. Each one of her children either brought her lunch or took her out to eat - that is lunch with Wesley, Betty, Helen, and Steve. She especially enjoyed the lunch and visit from her brother Bob and his wife, Sadie. Lydia Alholm missed the last meeting as her two grandsons from the

Also, I was surprised to see lots of extra friends there, including Frank Horak and family, Bobby and Ruth Ann Wuensche, John Hoelscher and family, and the Festa family from Holland. My husband Brian and my two children Stephanie and Samuel also came to my surprise. Patsy, Kim, and Brenda are great at keeping secrets. Thank you again for the wonderful party! Sincerely, Joan Vanicek —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of CHARLES EDWARD GENTRY. Funeral services for Charles Edward Gentry were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2012, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Ennis. Visitation was held Thursday, January 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at J.E. Keever Mortuary. Burial was at Myrtle Cemetery. His nephews Harold Wayne Barker, Ronnie Charles Gentry Fisher, Glenn Fisher, Leslie Gentry, Doug Gentry, and Willie Roark served as pallbearers. Mr. Gentry, age 88, died Wednesday, January 11 at Ennis Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born January 3, 1924, in Erath County, he was the son of Ernest Leamon and Mary Alice Tallant Gentry. The third of 14 children, he moved with his family to Sand Lake in the early 1940s. He attended school at Sand Lake through eighth grade then worked for J. Roy Glaspy as a farmhand. He and his brother Albert were drafted into the United States Army in 1944. He was stationed at Camp Fannin in Tyler and

turned 21 years old aboard the HMS Queen Mary en route to the European theater of war. A private first class, he was a member of the Army’s Fifth Ranger Battalion, Company E. His company was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and took part in cutting off an enemy supply route, the Irsh-Zerf road, 10 miles behind German lines. During that event, he was one of only six Rangers in his 75-man company to escape capture, injury, or death. The operation was a successful collaboration of several Ranger companies – and though it was to last 48 hours, it spanned nine days and was one of the final blows to enemy forces that brought World War II to an end. On May 15, 1948, he and Mary Helen Nowlin went to Rockwall, Texas, with another couple to elope. Though the other couple did not marry, he and Mary Helen did and began a marriage that spanned 63 years. After marrying, he and Mary lived in Sand Lake until 1950 when he began working at Upco Print Shop. In 1951, he became manager of United Publishing Company. He later became an owner and publisher of Ennis Daily News until he retired in 1997. Through the years, he became a pillar of the Ennis community by serving in many civic organizations. At the time of his death, he was the oldest surviving member of the Ennis Lions Club, where he had served as president. He also had served as president of the Band Boosters, Golden Circle, Ennis Housing Authority, and the MACs group of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member, deacon, and Sunday School leader. A lifetime member of American Legion Post 361 and a VFW member, in 2010 he joined several other local veterans on an honor flight to Washington, D.C., where he was taken on a tour of the World War II Memorial. Along with his wife, he served as drive chairman for the United Way and was recognized for outstanding service to the community by Ennis Chamber of Commerce. The couple also was recognized as community builders by the Masonic Lodge of Ennis. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. He had served as the first grand marshal of the Polka Festival parade. An avid sports fan and fisherman, he was known in the community for his fish frying, particularly for large crowds. One of the achievements he held closest to his heart was his work with the Ennis Little League. In 1955, he and five other men formed the

19

league, and he served as secretarytreasurer. For the next 35 years, he served as an officer and coach through the 1990 season. In the first season, boys aged nine through 12 were invited to sign up for baseball teams. Eighty signed up and the first little league season began in Ennis with four teams. It expanded to six teams in 1956, eight teams in 1957, and to 359 boys in 1959. Today, Ennis Little League, Inc., has more than 500 children registered with 40 teams. He and Charles Muirhead purchased land for a baseball field and built the diamond. Several years later, they donated the field to Ennis High School, which EHS used for many years until a new field was constructed at the school’s current location. Throughout the years, the league played games at Sam Houston School field and St. John field. In the late 1970s, the league named three of the fields at Sam Houston for some of the people who had contributed much to the league. The Pony League Field was named “Charles Gentry Field.” Mr. Gentry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Albert Saunley Gentry, Prentice W. “Jinker” Gentry, and David Douglas Gentry; and sisters Billie Holland, Joy Barker, Ruby Alsup, Juanita Good, and Mary Ellen Gentry. Survivors include wife Mary Helen Gentry of Ennis; daughters Kathleen Gentry Fox and husband Dudley Fox of Ennis and Peggy Gentry Phillips of Carrollton; sons Charles Edward “Charlie” Gentry, Jr. of Dallas and Roger Nowlin Gentry and wife Pam Smith Gentry of Ennis; sisters Frances Fisher of Burleson, Ruth Benefield of Sweeny, Patsy Swafford of Kennedale, and Sandra Moss of Dallas; brother E.L. “Sonny” Gentry Jr. of Streetman; grandchildren Kelly Fox Armstrong, Dudley Wayne “Lee” Fox Jr., Michelle Fox Hoffeditz, Chris Bouchillon, Meredith Gentry Andersen, Jon Gentry, Roger Nowlin “Lin” Gentry, Jr., and Robert Gentry Phillips; Micah Wayne Fox, Savannah Armstrong, Joshua Fox, Grant Hoffeditz, Lance Hoffeditz, Reece Hoffeditz, Elijah Bouchillon, and Noah Alexander Phillips; great-greatgrandson Gabriel Alexander Fox; and 38 nieces and nephews. Donations in memory of Charles E. Gentry may be made to Ennis Little League, Inc. With deepest sympathy, Betty Macalik Financial Secretary —SPJST—
