Special Vestnik Ad Rates!

The Publication Committee met on January 14 to review the Vest-

nik/Communication Department’s accomplishments in 2011 and plan for 2012. They presented six recommendations to the Supreme Lodge. Five of these recommendations were approved by the Supreme Lodge in their meeting held January 17 to 19. One issue of the Vestnik will be mailed to all SPJST households in an effort to inform members of SPJST news and events. Recipients will have an opportunity to continue their subscription by contacting the Home Office. The Vestnik issue will be mailed sometime in 2012. A Facebook photo contest that promotes Czech heritage, SPJST, and/or its events in an effort to increase SPJST’s Facebook fan base will be conducted. Be sure to “like” our SPJST Facebook page soon so you will be the first to know the details about this exciting contest! The Communication Department will develop a video contest for youth to promote SPJST and its youth program. We are finalizing details with the Youth Department, and we will announce this contest soon. What a great opportunity for our youth to share their video skills . . . and promote the SPJST Youth Program. In honor of the Vestnik’s 100th anniversary in 2012 and in an effort to increase Vestnik advertising, special advertising rates for 2012 are: SPJST Lodge Rates $2 per column inch Non-Profit Rates $4 per column inch Commercial Rates $6 per column inch

What a deal because we are cele-

brating such an important milestone for the Vestnik! It will be 100 years since the first Vestnik was published on September 1, 1912. Be sure to take advantage of these great advertising rates by calling or emailing us with your ad information. To commemorate SPJST’s 115th anniversary and the Vestnik’s 100th anniversary in 2012, a special issue of the Vestnik will be published in lieu of a regular Vestnik recognizing and celebrating the history of SPJST and the Vestnik. Lodges, we need your help. Please start thinking of some data to submit for this important Vestnik. We have information on lodges through 1981 from A History of The SPJST. But, beyond that — we must rely on you to help. Stay tuned for more details. Thanks to the Publication Committee for a great meeting and to the Supreme Lodge for approving these recommendations.

Convention Corner This week’s Convention Corner features information on submitting advertisements for the 31st SPJST Convention Souvenir Book to be published to commemorate this year’s convention. Readers Write

Readers enjoy kewl youth article

Melanie, My wife is a longtime member of Lodge 29, Taylor, and we receive the Vestnik weekly. Being retired, I normally go through it, picking out articles of interest, but usually don’t spend a lot of time reviewing the Youth Section. However, in the January 18 issue, something caught my attention, and I couldn’t resist reading that letter. What caught my attention was the picture of April Dvorak, age 11, Lodge 25, Ennis, with the wild hog she had shot. Her letter is one of the most enjoyable, entertaining, and humorous articles I’ve read in a long time. Real down to earth, and, written by an 11year-old! My wife and I think the article is real kewl, and we are at least “two” of the “Awesome Persons” who read it! That young lady has a knack for writing—she needs to keep it up! Congratulations to April on an outstandingly fun written letter! Sincerely, Two Awesome Persons Bill and MaryAnn Steffek Oatmeal, Texas —SPJST—

Photographer seeks Czech-born natives

Dear Melanie, My wife, Martina, is Czech. Together, we lived in the Czech Republic for two years before we were married and make occasional trips there to visit family and friends. This winter/spring, I am engaging in a photo art project about Czech immigrants who settled in central Texas. I’m looking for people who emigrated from Czech in the years leading up to and including 1968, when the Russians invaded Czechoslovakia. Those who qualify will have the chance to have their portrait taken and have their part of their native hometown professionally photographed. (The town does not have to still exist to be eligible.) I will meet the individuals for an interview and portrait session and then travel to their Czech home towns in April/May. If you know someone who meets the above description, please let them

If you or someone you know is interested in helping to support this project in other ways, you may contact me directly or wait for the fundraising Kickstarter.com project to go live. This is the first step in preparing the project and will help me in getting the Kickstarter project site live. Thank you for any help or leads you can offer! Hello, Sister Melanie. My friend finally came and gave me the photos that he took of my Christmas tree and the Czech flag ornament. The SPJST ornament didn’t show up as the light goes right through it (because it is clear).

Please see last month’s Fraternal Updates for additional details or you may call me (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke1@aol.com. An application is available at www.spjst.org under scholarships. Tournaments in past years have been filled with lots of fraternal fun and some good, clean competition. Now is the time to get your teams and cheering sections lined up for this funfilled day. If you do not have a team, do not worry! We will place you on a team with other members of your organization who were not able to fill a team. If you will recall, this event involved members of SPJST, Catholic Life, KJT, KJZT, Knights of Columbus, Woodmen of the World, and Sons of Hermann. To compete, you must be at least 16 years of age and a member in good standing. Teams will consist of five players – any combination of men and women. If you will be bowling and are a member of more than one of

these organizations, you must choose which one you will be representing. The entry fee will be $20 per bowler or $100 per team. Walk-ins will be registered from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the day of the tournament providing lanes are available. Bowling will start at 12 noon. The bowling center has 36 lanes available, so entries will be on a first come, first served basis. Any entries arriving after the lanes are all filled will be placed on a waiting list in the event of a cancellation. Pre-registration deadline will be Monday, February 6. Be sure to preregister as soon as possible to be assured that you will be able to participate and to lock in your spot. Awards will be presented to the top three women and the top three men for high series and high game. The traveling trophy will go the fraternal with the highest average. To qualify for this trophy, a fraternal must have a minimum of three teams entered in the tournament. All scores will be calculated with handicap included. This will give all participants an equal opportunity to win an award. Make plans now to join us in New Braunfels on February 11 for a day of fun and fraternalism.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Although the deadline to apply for one of the many scholarships is February 1, the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31. Thanks to all lodges and members who have contributed to this worthy cause to assist members in furthering their education and helping them to achieve career goals. Keep those pennies coming in. Any amount will be graciously accepted.

Join Hands Day May 5, 2012, marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 125-year old organization unites not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults and/or other organizations to make improvements in your community. Projects from previous years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-up, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, and conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects or you can go online at www.joinhandsday.org for more ideas. The Home Office again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges who register their project with the Home

Happy Valentine’s Day – February 14 Each year in February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Although the tradition of St. Valentine began many years earlier, Americans probably began exchanging handmade valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass produced valentine cards in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Remember your loved ones on this day.

It’s Your Life

Life insurance can be very confusing. Some companies want to sell you a lot of insurance for a few dollars. Some want to push on you a final expense. Still others want to build you a college fund. There are hundreds of products available, but when all is said and done, you can break life insurance into three categories. If you understand this you, you can be comfortable you have the right insurance.

• Term Insurance - This is pure insurance. It is designed to cover investments, such as homes, businesses (key man insurance or buy sell agreements), boats, or other large items while it is being paid off. It is no different than your auto insurance. You buy auto insurance to protect your car in case something happens. If you never get into an accident, the company keeps the money. It’s the same with term. If you live to the term, the company keeps the money. It cost you less money and you can get more insurance. • Whole Life - There is various whole life products, but they are primarily designed to cover death and debt. These are the products that insurance was designed around. This is for the person who does not want their loved ones to incur any financial stress surrounding their death. You should plan enough to cover the funeral, any debt, and any possible medical costs. • Universal Life (UL) Products These products are designed for living

benefits such as supplementing college or retirement. This product can be affected by the economy. It is not an investment account. It is a life insurance policy with investment qualities. It works best when it is overfunded with the idea that you will be using it while you are alive. This product is complex and should be discussed with someone who understands the best way to manipulate it for their situation. When buying a UL, you need to make sure it is managed annually by having an agent review it with you. Remember, it is okay to mix and match. Multiple policies may work best.

Did you know? • Only 15 percent of children under age 18 have life insurance. • 33 percent of all households do not have any insurance. • 54 percent of married couples do not have adequate insurance for their needs.

Don’t wait until tragedy strikes to find out what you do or do not have. Call your insurance agent or State Field Representative today, and he or she will be glad to come out to review all your life insurance at no cost. Disclaimer: These views are the opinion of Delisle Doherty and not necessarily the views of SPJST or any of its agents. —SPJST—

Louis Hanus

years of paralysis in both arms. During that time, he could not move his arms and was so impaired that he could not work. He sought relief from this condition during a visit to Dr. Maresh when the doctor told him about a recent medical meeting that he had attended. Of course, Louis was impatient to have him do something to correct his condition and could not understand why he was telling him about this meeting that had nothing to do with his paralysis. Finally, Dr. Maresh told him the meeting was to let the doctors meet an individual who had real problems; the person was the well-known Helen Keller, who was not only blind, but deaf and mute. Dr. Maresh told Louis in view of her overcoming her great adversity, Louis’ condition paled in light of hers. This inspired him to continue to seek therapy that would restore life to his arms, which was gradually indeed slowly returning to him. His condition had bettered to the point he could raise his arms and move his hand. Dr. Maresh advised him to try and enlist in the Army, even though he could only move his hands at this point. When the army doctors asked the recruits to raise their arms and wiggle their fingers, he raised them and just wiggled his whole hands. He was accepted, commissioned as a Lieutenant! A second tour was unexpected when in 1953, he was recalled for the Korean War, this time ending his tour as a Captain. Alois and Rosa Kuska Hanus from Prague immigrated to Houston in 1908. Their two offspring, Louis and Rosa Lee Hanus Kostom were both born in Houston. Louis began a career with Schotts Bakery which eventually encompassed some 45 years. He worked virtually every position and retired as office manager and purchasing agent. Louis’ father, Alois initiated the Sokol movement in Houston in 1926 and served as Lodge 88 president. Louis became active and developed an interest in lodge work from the early age of 10. He was the first son of a lodge president to become president himself. Louis initiated many progressive changes for the lodge including Thursday night bingo. In fact, the first 13 years he did not

miss one Thursday night and this was only when he was elected director of SPJST District Five in 1979, a position he retired from in 2000 and a position that required trips out of town to attend meetings at SPJST Home Office in Temple. Louis’ dedication to lodge work through the years has meant he was always there when SPJST and Czech heritage were involved. His activities with other groups included the Rotary Club, and he spent a number of years working with the development and funding for Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. His contribution toward the purchase of the building for the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple, Texas, to allow SPJST folklore holdings accumulated through the years to be displayed in a fitting setting is another example of his largesse. Dedication and commitment were his character. His untiring volunteerism is admirable and was supported throughout by his wife Oleta. His commitment to Czech culture was an inspiration to many others, and his support of the Czech Center Museum Houston was total from its very inception giving wise counsel, guidance and his enthusiasm for his work was always contagious. Indeed, the Czech Center Museum Houston will always be indebted to him for when we started building our facility, there were only funds sufficient to purchase the property, start a building project for a three-and-onehalf story building and only finish the first floor. While construction was underway, Louis’ philanthropy of a magnanimous contribution made it possible to finish our second floor, the now always to be dedicated to him as The Hanus Prague Ballroom, a vital component of our organization. We cannot forget his legacy to our organization and to SPJST and his life of commitment and philanthropy which serves as an example to others to emulate. Deceased 2004, Louis Hanus is not forgotten Effie and Bill Rosene Lodge 232, Mid-Houston Czech Center Museum Houston

Lodge 15 Buckholts to honor members

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order at 5 p.m. by President Douglas Williams. This was a special-called meeting as the regularly scheduled meeting for January 9 was not held due to inclement weather. It was very wet and cold. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the secretary followed by a moment of silence in memory of departed members. We have recently lost two of our longtime members - Gertie and John Thomas Svetlik. All officers were present except for Second Vice President Adolph Jurca. The treasurer gave her report which was approved as read. The SPJST Awards Banquet will be held on January 28 at the Frank Mayborn Center in Temple. Paperwork has been submitted as to the number attending from our lodge. One of the most exciting events that takes place in our little town of Buckholts will be the annual Hee Haw Show on Friday, January 27 at 7 p.m. in our lodge building. Milton Wright and Friends will be providing the music. Those friends include the one and only Alfred Vrazel and the famous Mario and his accordion. Kenneth and Naomi Arnold and family will be bringing some musical numbers. Also appearing will be Cowboy Ray Fritz. There will be some hilarious comedy skits throughout the program. It is always so entertaining from start to finish. You don’t want to miss it. Food will be available which will be provided by the Fire Department Auxiliary. All benefits from the show will help our fire department pay insurance on the trucks and other expenses. President Williams stated that the Lodge 15 Restoration Project is still

going on; it’s just in the state of moratorium right now due to the extreme drought and the overall economy. We are hoping things bet better soon. For the February meeting, we planned a special valentine celebration honoring our 50-year members. Dinner will be served, and pictures will be taken of our honorary guests which will be sent to the Věstník. Also, Every Day Hero pins will be awarded to our faithful lodge volunteers. We will also be celebrating the birthday of our oldest member, Hilda Burtis who will be 96. President Williams received information from Jerry Milan with Sokol organization who is celebrating its 100th year. The Sokol originated in Europe back in 1865. Later, it organized in the United States in 1912. It was very active in our area years ago. Our lodge wants to be a part of the cel-

Hilda Burtis has such a wonderful memory of the past. She remembers who a lot of the members were. The president asked her and also A.W. Zajicek and Frank Tomascik to prepare a list of all members who they can recall. Hilda’s and A.W.’s dads were both members. Frank said his dad was too old to belong. Jerry Milan told President Williams that he has a lot of pictures of the members from the Buckholts area that he will share with us. It sounds very interesting. We were reminded that the new SPJST cookbooks will be on sale at the Awards Banquet. Frank Tomascik made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by A.W. Zajicek. Motion carried. Door prizes were drawn and refreshments served. Next Meeting—February 13 The next meeting will be on February 13 at 5 p.m. We hope to see you there. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 177 Academy receives letter of thanks

Dear Readers, I would like to share this letter that we received for a donation that Lodge 177, Academy presented to Academy ISD recently.

Dear Mr. Beck and SPJST Lodge 177, Academy, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and Lodge 177 for the recent $1,000 donation to the Academy Independent School District. Over the last few years, you have donated over $10,000 to our District, funding various improvements to our academic programs and providing necessary instructional materials. Since 2005, school districts across the State have seen their State funding decreased, culminating in the $4 billion cut during this last legislative session. With this cut in funding, school districts have had to drastically reduce their budgets resulting in the loss of personnel and programs. We are very fortunate, here at Academy ISD, to have partners in education such as SPJST Lodge 177, Academy. Your donations and those from other groups and individuals have enabled us to continue to provide the very best education to, who we feel are, the very best students in this State. Once again, thank you from Acad-

emy ISD and the bottom of my heart! Sincerely, Kevin Sprinkles Academy ISD Superintendent Lodge 177 is proud to support Academy ISD and its students. Fraternally, Otis Beck, President —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on January 12, 2012. Ann Clagett, Victoria Vlk, Eleanora Pelzel, and I arrived around 8 a.m. We stretched Victoria Vlk’s quilt which was a bow tie pattern made from the shirts of her late husband Stanley, and it was really pretty. We also arranged table and chairs, and someone put the coffee on, as it was really cold that morning. We started quilting and before we knew it, Irene Prachyl, Martha Ritchey, Dorothy Bobalek, Pat Fowler, Dorothy J. Kudrna, and Margaret Martinek were all quilting. By lunchtime, we had 22 members and two guests — Joe Ehrenberger and Julius Podhrasky. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you all for the wonderful dishes, the set up, the clean up, and to Libbie Vrla for taking out the trash. Quilters returned to quilting, and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Rose Ann Vrana, Mary Blazek Smith, Agnes Horak, Vlasta Knize, Wesley Mach, John Zabojnik, Stanley Dlabaj, Jr., Lisa Bohuslav Marklund, and Vaclav Havel, last president of Czechoslovakia and first president of the Czech Republic. All the above were family and friends of our members except for Havel. Secretary Margaret read the min-

utes of the last meeting with one minor correction. Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced January birthday celebrants — Lil Kosarek, Mildred Adamcik, Eleanora Pelzel, Libbie Elsik, Mildred Betik, Bessie Laznovsky, Dorothy Booth, and Anne Zabojnik. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Lil and Eleanora who were present. Eleanora had a birthday card for all to sign for Bessie Laznovsky and a get well card for Lil Laznovsky. Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler announced that we will quilt for Bessie Laznovsky in February and in March for Pat Fowler. Ann Clagett read thank you notes from Frances Vinkler, Dorothy M. Kudrna, Mildred Adamcik, Anne Zvolanek, and Libbie Wisniewski for their Christmas sacks. They all expressed how happy they were and how much they are enjoying the items in their sacks. President Dorothy thanked all who had donated items for the sacks and all who delivered them. Lil announced that there are still some who haven’t paid their 2012 dues. Please do so as soon as possible. A discussion was held on the amount we will donate to Sokol Hall for the use of its kitchen and dining room. A motion was made by Libbie Vrla and seconded by Pat Fowler that we donate the same as last year. Lil Kosarek wrote a check, and I will give it to Sokol President David Slovak. quilt is ready and will be given to Debbie Slovak. The color is different shades of green which is really pretty. A big thank you goes out to Willie Mae Becan for donating the bottom material of this quilt. President Dorothy thanked Pat, Irene, and Eleanora for being on the nominating committee. Pat asked for nominations from the floor. As there were none, she asked if the president, vice president, and secretary would serve another year. She nominated Dorothy Bobalek for treasurer. It was a unanimous vote for all. A big thank you went out to Lil Kosarek for being the treasurer for 15 years. She did a great job. We know that Dorothy Bobalek will also. Lil will continue cutting and passing out squares for us to sew then helping in sewing the squares together for the quilt top. Lil does a great job, and we thank her for that. I also want to thank Eleanora; she always finishes off the quilt after quilting and does a beautiful job. Eleanora will continue being Sunshine Lady, and Pat will be quilt scheduler. Volunteers were asked for kitchen committee. Libbie, Joyce, Bertha, Willy, and Ginny all volunteered. Thank you all so much. Victoria Vlk thanked all who quilted on her quilt. Thank you to Libbie Vrla for donating coffee cups. President Dorothy thanked all for

Building better credit in the new year

by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

A new year often brings resolutions – such as endeavoring to spend less, save more, or repair bad credit. Maintaining a good credit report can translate into quicker loan approvals, competitive interest rates and a strong financial foundation. Whatever the motivation, Texans have an interest in obtaining and maintaining a good credit rating. A few simple steps can help borrowers repair bad credit. Most importantly, borrowers should always do their best to pay their bills on time. Making timely payments ensures borrowers have a positive payment history, which creditors weigh heavily when they make lending decisions. All Texans should periodically examine their credit reports and take quick action to address any disputed or incorrect information. It is particularly important to address any inaccurate information on a credit report. Federal law requires each of the nationwide credit reporting bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – to provide one free credit report per year to borrowers who request a copy of their report. The credit reporting bureaus must provide the borrower with everything in his or her credit report and a list of everyone who has requested the report within the past year.

VӖSTNÍK

Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, both the credit bureau and any organization responsible for reporting inaccurate information must correct errors or incomplete information on credit reports. Texans who discover errors on their credit reports should send a written dispute letter to both the credit reporting bureau and the creditor who filed the information. Dispute letters seeking corrections should very specifically describe the facts and circumstances surrounding the mistake. In addition to providing their complete name and address, borrowers should include copies (not originals) of any supporting documentation, such as receipts, statements that verify payments and a copy of the inaccurate credit report. Each error on the report should be circled or highlighted and accompanied by a detailed explanation clarifying why the information is inaccurate. Borrowers should send their dispute letter by certified mail, return receipt requested, so they can document that the credit bureau and creditor received their correction request. Borrowers should keep copies of the dispute letter and any enclosures. Once a credit bureau is notified of a dispute, it must investigate the items in question (unless it considers the dispute to be frivolous). The credit bureau also must forward all relevant data the borrower provided about the inaccuracy to the appropriate creditor. Upon receiving the information, the

creditor must review the dispute and report the results back to the credit bureau. If the reporting creditor discovers the disputed information is inaccurate, it must notify all three credit bureaus so corrections can be made to the information in the complainant’s file. Once its investigation is complete, the credit reporting bureau must notify the borrower of the results in writing. If the dispute led the credit reporting bureau to correct the mistake, the bureau must also provide the borrower a free copy of the corrected credit report. (Note: A corrected credit report does not count as the borrower’s annual free report.) If an item is changed or deleted, the credit reporting bureau cannot put the disputed information back in the borrower’s file unless the creditor verifies that the information is accurate and complete. The credit bureau also must send the borrower written notice that includes the creditor’s name, address and phone number. If the credit reporting bureau’s investigation does not resolve a borrower’s dispute, the borrower may request that a statement of the dispute be included in his or her file and in future credit reports. Borrowers may also ask the credit bureau to provide the dispute statement to anyone who previously received a copy of the report. Credit bureaus may charge a fee for this service. —SPJST—

Continued from Page 1.

ment,” he said. “We patrolled every day, eight to 10 hours. We did a lot of night ops, watching the area and keeping people safe.” One of the biggest and best surprises for Kyle was meeting up with fellow Elginite Josh Hamlett, a 2008 EHS graduate. Hamlett taught Kyle what to look out for, helping him make it back safely. Working with the locals changed over time, Kyle said. “When we first got there, they didn’t even know what Americans look like.” Eventually, they began to work with the Americans, getting them to clear the Taliban’s IEDs — which were as big a danger for the Afghans as they were for the United States soldiers. Kyle said his part of Afghanistan was different from the way Americans think of the country. “People think the entire country is brown and dusty. We were in green fields. There were poppy fields and fields of corn growing 10 feet high.” Temperatures could be extreme. At one time, it got up to 155 degrees with humidity. “When it got down to 90 degrees, I thought it was cold because of the temperature change,” Kyle said. When not on patrol, Kyle and his buddies tossed baseballs and footballs and tried hard to keep up with the scores back home. He read the Elgin Courier religiously, to keep up with the high school sports. Being stationed in a poor, war-ravaged country, put things into perspective for Kyle. Some of the most important differences turned out to be “the random stuff we take for granted. A cold glass of water is a huge luxury in a place like Afghanistan, where the locals are forced to drink water that is hot and many times contaminated. School is another thing Americans take for granted. American children might complain about having to go to school. In Afghanistan, the Taliban has been known to attack schools and many Afghan children have never been to one.

Editor’s Note: Kyle, his parents Paul and Sandra, and his grandparents Jim V. and Katy are all members of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin. Resolution of Sympathy

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of MAINER GAVRANOVIC, SR. On January 17, 2012, at the age of 68, Mainer Gavranovic, Sr. went to be with the Lord. A lifelong resident of Wharton, Mainer’s passion for farming led him to build his tree farm so that his family would have the best when he wouldn’t be there for them. A friend to everyone he met, he was admired by his family and wide circle of friends for his determination and fortitude in the face of so many physical challenges over the years. He consistently maintained that spark of wit and fine character we all came to respect and love. His life revolved around his family, and he will be greatly missed. Mainer, Sr. is survived by Rita, his wife of 47 years; children Loretta “Missy” Gavranovic, Jacqueline Parma, Mainer Gavranovic, Jr., and Marty Gavranovic; and five grandchildren. Visitation and rosary were held from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 19 at Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton. A celebration of life was held Friday, January 20 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton followed by interment in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. State Youth Director: February updates

Dear Members, There are two big events coming up on the youth calendar that have me excited — the Youth Development Workshop and Youth Leaders Retreat. Both of these are activities that will help us build a better youth program. Please make every effort to participate. The youth development workshop will be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, February 25 starting at 10:30 a.m. This year’s Youth Development Workshop is titled, “Make a Positive Difference” and it’s for all youth club members - not just officers. This year’s youth event is about providing our youth — and adult leaders — with the tools needed to be able to use in building stronger youth clubs. If you are planning to attend the Saturday, February 25 workshop, know that we have lined up three sessions. They are:

• SPJST Youth Program - The mission of the SPJST Youth Program is to provide a well-rounded educational, patriotic, and social program. In support of this mission, we will be talking about ways to make your youth club more relevant to the lives of youth club members and the community at large.

• Frank Horak - “Who am I?” The title says it all. I want our SPJST youth members to know how important they are to this fraternal organization, their community, and to our world. I want our youth to know they have a purpose in life and learn how to motivate themselves to realize their full potential. During this presentation, youth will get to know me a little better. I will be sharing photos and experiences from my childhood. They will understand even though we are from different generations, we all share a common bond. We will also play some games.

• Czech Heritage Museum – This segment will provide youth club members and parents with the opportunity to learn more about the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. The museum and genealogy center is dedicated to fostering educational, cultural, and genealogical opportunities, specifically as it pertains to people of Czech heritage. It accomplishes this by providing genealogical material; sponsoring educational programs; and collecting, researching, preserving, and exhibiting artifacts and manuscripts to implement these programs. This will be a great opportunity for our members to tour the new location and pay respect to our Czech heritage. Youth Leaders Retreat Youth Leaders Retreat will be Saturday, March 24 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The program starts at 10 a.m. with introductions and lunch at 12 noon. We will be ready to register you any time that morning. You can also plan on experiencing a great night of fraternalism with dinner and entertainment at “Casino Night.” I am looking into booking rooms at Hilton Garden Inn in Temple for those of you who want to stay the evening. I am asking youth leaders to share rooms with other youth leaders from your district and lodge. I will be mailing out a schedule and registration form with in a week of you receiving this newsletter.

Dwight’s family has decided to come up with some plans in case a disaster ever happens to them or in their area. By using the information provided to the left either fill in the blank or answer the questions that are asked below.

Be Ready When Disaster Strikes Disaster strikes thousands of families each year in the form of tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards and fires. Because you never know when or where they will strike, every family needs to prepare in advance by gathering needed supplies and making a plan.

1. What types of disasters strike thousands of families each year?

Make a Plan and Talk About It Sit down with your family or household to talk about potential disasters and what could happen to the escape routes in your neighborhood. Establish responsibilities for each member of the household and work together as a team. Designate alternates in case someone is absent. When each family member knows their role, it eliminates confusion, helps people feel calm and confident, and saves lives. Choose two places to meet after a disaster: • Outside your home in case of a sudden emergency such as a fire. • Outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home. Each adult in your household should learn how and when to turn off utilities such as electricity, water, and gas. Ask someone at the fire department to show you how to use the fire extinguisher in your home. If you turn off your gas, only a professional can turn it back on. Look through your family emergency preparedness kit every six months. Replace water, food and other perishable items. Tell everyone in the household where emergency contact information is kept. Make copies for each family member to carry. Be sure to identify an out-of-town contact for everyone to call to let them know where they are and how they can be reached. Practice your plan twice a year. Drive your planned evacuation route. Plot alternative routes on a map in case main roads are impassable or gridlocked. Practice with drills at home, school and work. Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House The continuing support of sending pull tabs in for the Ronald McDonald House is a worthy charity that we have been supporting. They use the money from the sale of the can tabs to buy gas for their transportation vehicle and to buy much needed supplies for the house. I strongly encourage all of the SPJST youth clubs to save pull tabs for this worthy, ongoing project. Your youth club will receive a thank you letter from the Ronald McDonald House and the knowledge that they helped someone in need that really needed help. Please mark your donations clearly so I can make sure your group gets the proper recognition that it deserves.

2012 Camp Tee-Shirt Contest January 31 was the deadline for the camp tee-shirt contest. I have received lots of creative and wonderful designs. A panel of judges will be judging them in the coming days. Thank you to all the youth who entered the contest. Three winners out of the four age categories will receive a $75 Wal-mart gift card. The grand prize winner will receive a $100 Wal-mart gift card along with having his/her design printed on the camp tee-shirt.

what you want to do in 2012. The main thing — at this point — is to commit to do something. When coming up with ideas for your project try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again, this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day and online with Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered their project online. Lodge 84, Dallas Youth: Shrek the Halls at Christmas

Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas had its Christmas party on Sunday, December 18, 2011. A potluck dinner was served. The lodge provided ham, cheese, and bread, while the members brought side dishes and desserts. There were so many delicious sweets that it was hard to choose just one. It was good to have our members together to celebrate. My aunt, Lyn Olds, took me, my mom and dad, and my friend Baylee to ICE at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas. This year’s theme was Shrek the Halls. We were loaned coats to wear, for it was 30 degrees inside (to keep the ice frozen). There were many scenes from the Shrek

the Halls Christmas special, and everything was carved out of ice. They even had ice slides that we rode down. There was a beautiful Nativity scene that took our breath away. The Gaylord Texan Hotel was decorated for Christmas, too. There were many gigantic trees, reindeer, snowmen, a train, and a model of the hotel made out of gingerbread. There is a different theme every year. I recommend attending ICE at the Gaylord Texan. It runs each year November through early January. Fraternally, Melinda McClellan, age 13, Reporter —SPJST—

thomas.sovik@unt.edu or (817) 2879644. We invite you to join us for any or all performances to savor the moment and to celebrate the beauty of the old Czech polkas and waltzes. This is entertainment for the whole family, an excellent opportunity for our seniors to hear once again hauntingly, beautiful renditions reminiscent of the music of their youth, and for our young people to experience, perhaps for the first time, the lilting beauty of Czech voices and brasses raised in song. It’s joyous music, tempered with an element of old-world dignity, that tugs at the heartstrings and sets toes to tapping the moment the music begins. We hope that you will make every effort to attend at least one of the performances, and that you will encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to join you in this celebration of authentic brass band music from the land of our ancestors. This is not an opportunity that will present itself again anytime soon. It is an expensive undertaking to bring nine musicians and their instruments to Texas – airfare, food, lodging, ground transportation, and band fees must be taken into consideration. Even more to the point, we’re witnessing the waning years of the era of brass band music, even in the Czech lands. Many of the superb bands from the old country that toured Texas two or three decades ago have either disbanded or have become mere shadows of their former selves. Members of the remaining bands are, for the most part, pensioners, who no longer have the stamina for the rigors of travel abroad. Stříbrňanka will be performing at six different venues across the state during the nine days they are here. When you factor in jet lag, that’s a grueling schedule for anybody of any age. Stříbrňanka comes to you without cost. The tour is being funded by interest from the CEFT-Kostohrys endowment at UNT. Some of the venues, however, will be charging a nominal fee in order to cover expenses. But none of that money will go to CEFT or UNT. CEFT would, however, welDechová hudba Stříbrňanka. The brass band is a common feature in the life of Czechs. Beginning with the marching army bands, the style soon spread beyond the military to become the “music of the people” and, by the beginning of the last century, nearly every town and village had its own dechovka.

New Year in the Czech Republic by Dr. Bob Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood

The arrival of the year 2012 was celebrated in various ways in the Czech Republic as it was throughout the world. According a recent report by Radio Prague, while the majority of Czechs welcomed the new year with plenty of good food, champagne, and fireworks, a few thousand believers attended a traditional New Year’s Mass at the Basilica of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary in Hostýn – the most significant pilgrimage site in Moravia. Legend links the emergence of this pilgrimage site with the invasion of Moravia by the Tartars in the year 1241. The people believed that Mary helped Christians resist the attack of the enemies, so in the 13th century, the original chapel was converted into a church devoted to Mary that stood there until the Thirty Years’ War, when it was torn down. Today’s basilica has its beginnings in the majestic construction of the holy shrine, which was built in the Baroque style of Frantisek Antony from Rottalu in the years 1721-48. Since that time, the cathedral has been destroyed many times and

the whole mountain was abandoned. Upon the orders of Emperor Joseph II, the cathedral was declared useless and pilgrimage was forbidden. In the first half of the 19th century, Christians started to organize collections for the cathedral's reconstruction, and the sight was re-consecrated in 1845. The dominant feature of all of Hostýn is the holy basilica with its statue of the Virgin Mary. The basilica is surrounded by cloisters of chapels. At the beginning of the stairway, nearly 230 meters long, which goes all the way to the basilica, is a chapel from which springs forth purportedly miraculous waters. The way of the cross is very precious with its mosaics; it’s first station is on the left of the basilica. The last station (an arched chapel with Jesus’ grave) is near the forest cemetery. People arrived by train from all corners of the Czech Republic, some travelling hundreds of kilometers to make pilgrimage to this sacred site. Once in the town of Hostýn, they could choose between boarding a bus or braving a five kilometer walk uphill to the famed basilica. Many considered it right to walk, braving an icy wind and snow as they made their way up the slippery stone steps to reach their destination in time for the midnight mass celebrated by the Archbishop Jan Graubner of Olomouc. Sixty-fiveyear old Josef Psík, who walks with the help of a cane and did not think twice about making the journey, said: “The New Year’s Mass here is such a fascinating, enriching experience that it charges your batteries for the year ahead and we return home with a blessing from the Virgin Mary.” The Reverend Jiří Solc, pastor of the basilica, said: “We consider each new year a gift, and we come here to give thanks for it. Instead of depleting our strength, we come here to build it up.” The mass lasted for two hours and at 2 a.m. in the morning the congregation slowly dispersed to begin their long journey home – feeling invigorated and at peace. Meanwhile, President Václav Klaus opened his New Year’s address, traditionally an indicator of the nation’s mood, with a reminder of the death of Václav Havel, the beloved first president after the Velvet Revolution, declaring that Havel had done much for freedom and democracy in the country and, thus, his legacy would endure for years to come. Like other political leaders across the eurozone, Klaus also warned of the dangers the economy is facing in the coming 12 months. Going into 2012,

he said, the European Union is likely to encounter difficult challenges. However, he added, the Czech Republic is doing relatively well despite toughening economic conditions. The country is not facing bankruptcy, and its unemployment rate was below the European average. Alluding to a series of scandals that shook the government coalition, he slammed ceaseless political disputes, a lack of strong leaders and an increasing sense of mutual distrust that had dominated 2011 and blocked political growth. He expressed hopes that political parties would refrain from making irresponsible promises in the campaigns for regional and Senate elections to take place in 2012. He pointed out that the country was full of hard-working and talented people and, to make the coming year a successful one, it was important to follow their lead. —SPJST—

“Mosaics of Faith” to focus on the Czech Republic

Holidays bring visitors to TCHCC

Many travelers took advantage of the unusually warm weather during the Christmas holidays to visit friends and relatives and also to take in a museum or two.

Among the visitors to TCHCC were Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Sandmann of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, friends of Honorary TCHCC Director Bill Melnar and Betty Melnar of Georgetown, Texas. They expressed their appreciation for the progress and work at TCHCC by donating $1000 to the Endowment Fund. “We are pleased to note that we had many visitors from all parts of the state

and also from other states to view the Nativity Art Exhibit this year,” said James “Doc” Ayres, one of the TCHCC Directors and coordinator of the exhibit. Three large nativity scenes painted by Ferdinand Pribyl in the late 1800s and 88 other crèches were on display from November 21 toJanuary 20. Doc Ayres expressed his appreciation to all who brought their nativities for the exhibit and especially to Elizabeth Stockbauer, her daughter Bette Stockbauer-Harris, and James Harris, descendants of Ferdinand Pribyl, for sharing these beautiful works of art. The next exhibit at the TCHCC Museum from February 4 to June 25 is a textile exhibit. It will include lace, embroidery, crochet, knitting, tatting, and fabrics. As with the crèches, items will be taken on loan for display during that time. TCHCC invites public participation in this special exhibit. Anyone interested in sharing textiles should email TCHCC at info@czechtexas.org or call (979) 968-9399 for more information on what the museum committee will accept for display. Veselý turning heads in NBA

After a slow start, while hobbled by injury, rookie Jan Veselý is beginning to find his way with the NBA's Washington Wizards. While the team had the league's worst start to the season, suffering eight consecutive defeats, the Ostrava native, aka "The Dunking Ninja," himself was carrying a hip injury before eventually making his debut in the 92-73 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves Jan. 8. Veselý, 21, showed signs of nerves as he took two free throws, missing both attempts and putting up an embarrassing airball on the first. "I'm just trying to play hard every

game. I practice and work hard on the court because that's what I do and that's what I enjoy," Veselý told The Prague Post. "Some games you play good, and some you play bad. What matters is how the team is playing." Fortunately, Veselý had an immediate chance to erase that memory as the Wizards hosted the Toronto Raptors two days later and an inspired performance from the seven-footer helped the Wizards earn a 93-78 win, their first of the season.
