My daughter Kathleen Prachyl, along with Donna Daugherty, Linda Johnson, and Annie Wartsbaugh traveled to the Czech Republic to visit family and friends. We researched some family histories and visited sites of interest. On August 30, 2011, we drove to Pradlo, a small village whose history was woven with the history of a young man from E n n i s , Texas. I would like to give you an unbelievable story. It was the year 1944. The mission for the night of February 22 was the Messerschmitt Airplane Factory in Regensburg, Germany. The B-24 j Bomber Wing was based in Italy; however, the sortie run to and returning from the mission was over the skies of Czechoslovakia. A pilot from Ennis, Texas, George “Skipper” Goddard and his nine-man crew had successfully deployed their bombs but had sustained heavy damage and were falling behind the other aircraft. The temperature was 20 degrees below zero as they began to take on heavy gunfire from pursuing Bf109E Messerchmitts. The guns on the plane were frozen, and one engine was on fire. They considered turning the

plane toward Switzerland when suddenly the B-24 exploded, blasting all 10 men out toward the earth and certain death over the snow-covered Dubec Hill in the Chejlava woods of Czechoslovakia. That day in the nearby village of Chocenice gathered a group celebrating the wedding of a young couple. However, all were horrified by the events t a k i n g place overhead. A couple of the celebrants took off on skis to check for any survivors and found that one of the plane’s gunmen Ray Noury, whose parachute had partially opened had plunged into a snow bank and, though badly injured, had survived. The villagers took him down the hill on a makeshift stretcher attached to a pair of skis but had no choice but to turn him over to their German occupiers. Ray Noury would spend the next 15 months in a prisoner of war camp. Years later, during the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Communist takeover, all memorials to honor

VӖSTNÍK

Congrats, Charlene Kirby!

A big congratulations to Charlene (Volcik) Kirby of SPJST Lodge

54, West! She is the winner of a basket full of Czech goodies, generously donated by Texas Czech Genealogical Society. Charlene is one of more than 1,100 members who completed and mailed in their SPJST Member Update from the 2012 SPJST calendar. Her name was drawn at the SPJST Awards Banquet held January 28 in Temple. Thanks to each and every member who returned this important update. We appreciate you taking the time to complete the form and return it to us.

Thanks, TCGS! Before the SPJST Awards Banquet, I had the honor and pleasure to speak at the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s annual meeting held in Caldwell. My topic was “SPJST Vestnik — Archiving the Past for the Future.” What a warm welcome David and I received from the moment we drove into the parking lot. Part of my presentation covered the history of SPJST newspapers since 1897. One of the first items in the first SPJST convention was establishing a newspaper as a means of communication for members. In 1912, convention delegates approved the Vestnik as SPJST’s own independent newspaper — a tradition that proudly continues today. The Vestnik has been published weekly since 1916, and it has been and continues to be a valuable medium. Last year, SPJST and TCGS partnered to archive all past available Vestniks. The issues have been scanned. Rescans will take place in the next few months. Then, the Vestniks will be uploaded to a searchable database and be available for research. The Vestnik can put flesh on the bones of so many Czech family trees

better than many other records, and this ambitious project to digitize the vast collection will reveal untold treasures that have laid buried in SPJST archives for, in some cases, 100 years. At the click of a button, you will be able to search on a name or a place and get further in 10 minutes than you would have done in 10 days of microfilm and paper searching. Anyone who eventually uses the Vestnik online resource or any other digitized newspaper archive will appreciate the value of this. So, gather up the names of your ancestors. Write yourself a big, long list. Very soon, you will be able to visit www.spjst.org to access this wonderful collaboration between TCGS and SPJST. And, the great thing is, even if you don’t find much soon after we launch it, there’s more to come. About 150,000 pages are set to go online this year during the Vestnik’s 100th anniversary. Watch the Vestnik for when the site will be ready. Thank you, TCGS, for the warm hospitality and for this grand opportunity.

Get Well Soon, Roy We send get well thoughts and prayers to SPJST Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak. Roy slipped on the stairs at his apartment complex and tore his quadriceps tendon. He is undergoing surgery on February 15 to repair the tear. Best wishes, Roy, for a speedy recovery.

Correction Last week’s Vestnik incorrectly identified Sales Agent William Reynolds’ lodge. William is from Lodge 162, Iowa Colony and is the 2011 District Five Top Career Agent in Certificates Issued. Congratulations to William, and we regret the error.

Have your lodge* participate in Join Hands Day on May 5, 2012

*and get $100 to apply towards your project! Mark May 5, 2012 on your calendar and make plans for your lodge to orga n i ze a local Join Hands Day service project. Join Hands Day is a program of the American Fraternal Alliance. The 125-year-old organization unites 70 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies that operate in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. The SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs to get involved on this special day! The first step is for your lodge to find a partner orga n i z ation of the opposite ge n e ration. Who better to work with that your lodge!s youth club! In the event that your lodge doesn!t have a youth club, it!s an excellent opportunity to get your young members involved in the lodge. You will also want to involve another community serv i c e, church or school group in your Join Hands Day project. You know the old saying: “The more the merrier!” Then, working together, plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where you live. Food drives, trash pick-ups and assisting the elderly and disabled are all good places to start. Or get creative and have some fun with the idea! You can also check out the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org for ideas. SPJST lodges that conduct Join Hands Day projects in 2012 will receive a $100 cash incentive from the Home Office. The incentive will be sent to the lodge following the registration of the event on the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org. For assistance, please contact the SPJST Fraternal Department at 800.727.7578. Lodges are strongly encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups.

Lodge 47, Seaton receives awards at banquet

Dear Vestnik Readers, On a cold, dry, windy February 5, 2012, seventeen members, one youth, and two visitors met for the monthly meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton. We were pleased to have Jesse and Linda Pospisil of Lodge 29, Taylor visiting with us. Our attendance was rather small due to this being the beginning of the Bell County Youth Fair for registration of all animals. We are so proud to have so many youth who participate in the many areas of the fair. Many of our youth will spend the week at the Expo Center with their beloved steers, pigs, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, goats, and sheep. There also are those who show their talents in foods, sewing, and so much more. We wish each of these youth the very best. We are very proud of you! And, of course, there may have been some who were missing the meeting getting geared up for the big Super Bowl game later in the afternoon. President Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The flags were presented by youth club member Justin Kraatz and adult lodge member Edwin Vasicek. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of members David Bartek and Gladys Marek. May God bless each of these families. Our thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with

February is the “Month of Love”

As the “month of love” is underway, many people are busy trying to figure out how to let their loved ones know just how much they care. Flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and candlelit dinners are all fine options. But this year, the nonprofit LIFE Foundation would like Americans to consider something slightly less traditional. February 1 marked the official launch of the Insure Your Love national awareness campaign, and LIFE wants Americans to consider expressing their love through the purchase of a life insurance policy. This is the fourth year that LIFE has coordinated Insure Your Love on behalf of the insurance industry. It provides industry professionals with an opportunity to reach out to people in their communities to remind them that the main reason to own life insurance is because you love people and want to protect them financially. “A life insurance purchase lets loved ones know that you care so much that you’ve made plans to provide for them, even after you’re gone,” said Marvin H. Feldman, CLU, ChFC, president and CEO of the LIFE Foundation. “That’s a message that LIFE will be delivering throughout the month of February, and we’ve created lots of great marketing resources to help producers share the Insure Your Love message with their clients and prospects.”

LIFE Enlists Fruit Flies to Help Spread the Message of Love and Life Insurance In conjunction with the Insure Your Love launch, LIFE recently introduced its newest life insurance spokespeople. Fruit flies Frank and Fran are LIFE’s newest life-insurance power couple. Because of their famously short life spans, fruit flies know there’s no time for procrastination. So when it comes to life insurance, they act right away to protect the ones they love. Frank and Fran deliver their life insurance messages in a series of web videos that can be found on LIFE’s Facebook Fan Page (www.facebook.com/lifehappens.org), its

Prime Season for Tax Scams

by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

Tax season can be a particularly active time for identity thieves, because tax returns contain all the information they need – Social Security numbers, names, addresses, employer information, investment account numbers – to open fraudulent accounts in a taxpayer’s name or steal a taxpayer’s income tax refund. Fortunately, taxpayers can avoid becoming identity theft victims by staying informed and avoiding common tax schemes. Avoid phishing scams. Phishing refers to fraudulent emails and websites that identity thieves create in an effort to trick victims into providing sensitive personally identifying information. The scam usually begins with a misleading email that appears to come from a financial institution, tax preparation firm or government agency. The email typically claims that highly sensitive personal information such as a Social Security number or account number is needed to ensure that a taxpayer’s income tax return can be processed. Taxpayers should be particularly wary of emails that claim to come from the IRS. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information – so taxpayers should never respond to emails that appear to be seeking information for the IRS. Taxpayers should also delete scam emails that claim to come from the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), a legitimate tax payment system that allows individuals and businesses to pay federal taxes electronically. According to the IRS, the scam email claims that tax payments made by the taxpayer through EFTPS have been rejected. The email directs the taxpayer to a bogus website that downloads malicious software onto the taxpayer’s computer. The malware is designed to retrieve personal and financial information already stored on the taxpayer’s computer – and scammers use the information to commit identity theft. Safeguard computers, mobile devices. Securing computers and mobile phones is crucial to thwarting identity

thieves. Taxpayers should passwordprotect their computer and update their computer’s anti-virus software. Scammers may also send bogus text messages that claim to be from the IRS. By sending unsolicited tax-related text messages, identity thieves are attempting to exploit taxpayers who believe that only a legitimate contact – like an IRS agent – would have their mobile phone number. Unfortunately, this false sense of security makes taxpayers more likely to click on a link in the bogus text message. Taxpayers should remember that the IRS does not use email or text messages to contact taxpayers about issues related to their accounts. Official taxpayer contact usually includes a letter on IRS stationery in an IRS envelope. IRS letters also contain a contact phone number. Research tax preparation services. Before providing personal and financial information to a tax return preparation professional, taxpayers should take four important steps: 1) ask for the tax preparer’s credentials; 2) check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints against the tax preparer; 3) verify whether the tax preparer is a certified public accountant; and 4) confirm that the business is open year-round in the event taxpayers need to ask follow-up questions about their income tax returns. As with any contractual agreement, Texans should carefully read the fine print before entering into a financial transaction involving their income taxes. Taxpayers who understand the nature of these agreements are more likely to make informed decisions that just might save some of their hardearned money. For example, Texans should always avoid tax preparation services that “guarantee” the largest possible tax return. Under federal law, any deductions tax preparers make for their clients must be accurate and legally permissible. Tax preparers that submit false information in order to obtain larger refunds for a client (and higher fees for the preparer) put their clients in legal jeopardy. Competent, legitimate tax preparers will not hesitate to sign their clients’ tax return. Know the truth about frivolous tax arguments. Although many prefer not to pay their taxes, it is well settled law that federal income taxes are NOT voluntary. United States courts have repeatedly rejected some of the more common false “legal” arguments made by those who oppose compliance with federal income tax laws, including contentions that taxpayers can refuse to pay income taxes on religious or moral grounds by invoking the First Amendment; that only federal government employees are subject to federal income taxes; and that only foreignsource income is taxable. —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth visits Camp Grady Spruce

Dear Readers, A few weeks ago, I went to a camp called Camp Grady Spruce. It was wet, but that is what made it fun. We hiked and rode horses. It was awesome. We had a food waste bucket, and the last day we got five ounces of waste. So the owner jumped in Possum Kingdom Lake in the winter. I bet it was cold! Sincerely, Brandon Droste —SPJST—

Read the following out loud. Get your parents, grandparents, relatives, or friends to help you with the pronunciation. clip and save each lesson and compile into a notebook.

děkuji—thank you prosím—you are welcome (means “please”, but used instead of English “you are welcome”) rádo se stalo—I was glad to do it není zač—don’t mention it .

8

,

Ďekuji is singular. Sometimes it is as děkuju. Děkuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is děkujeme. It is not necessary to add an equivalent of “you,” but it could be done, and it is often done. Then, it is děkuji ti when we are close to the person addressed, or děkuji Vám if the relation to the person addressed is more formal. .

8

,

The most common reply to the word děkuji is the word prosím. Rádo se stalo and neni zač is used similar to “I was glad to do it,” or “don’t mention it,” in America. .

8

,

Dovolte prosím—with your permission, (please), pardon me (please) odpusťte (prosím)—excuse me, (please) promiňte (prosím)—I am sorry, pardon me. nic se nestalo—it was nothing

The word prosím is the most common courtesy word. The original is, “I beg you” and only from the context can you tell whether the word prosím means “I beg you”, or whether it serves as “please”. Prosím, is shown in parenthesis because its use is optional, making it more polite. .

8

,

The words odpusťte and promiňte mean practically the same. The informal address would be promiň and odpust to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a “thou” basis. The “thou” and “you” basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address “thou” — in Czech, ty — (the verb tykati si), and persons we address you — in Czech vy — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is vykati si. To have something up your sleeve

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Soundczech, a programme in which you can learn new czech idioms with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song lyrics come from a duet by the czech evergreens Karel Gott and Lucie Bílá from their 1997 hit album Duets. The phrase to watch for is co za lubem máš?. Co za lubem máš?, Karel Gott asks Lucie Bílá. He is wondering what kind of mischief she’s up to because mít něco za lubem means to be up to monkey business. It doesn’t necessarily have to be something negative; it can be something naughty, cheeky, or playful. The closest English equivalent would be “to have something up one’s sleeve.” The phrase is generally used when you are wondering what someone is up to, when you don’t know what it is, but you suspect there is something funny going on. In the song, Karel Gott believes that he can tell what Lucie Bílá is up to - co má za lubem. I must admit that I never really thought about what the phrase means literally, and when I sat down to write this edition of SoundCzech, I realized that, despite being a Czech native speaker, I had no idea what the word lub actually stands for. So I did a bit of research, and here is what I found:

lub is an expression used for a special wooden vessel or container that was used in the old days for milling flour. Inside the vessel, there were several joints and the finest-grained flour would stick in the nooks and crannies. The miller knew very well that the fine flour was hidden za lubem — in the

15

BROTHERHOOD

hidden crannies of the lub — and would shrewdly keep it for his own use. Therefore, when you have something za lubem then you hide your wicked intentions from the others so that they don’t know what you are up to and can’t wreck your plans.

It is not only za lubem that you can keep something. In Czech, you can also say mít za ušima — literally — to have it behind your ears — meaning that you are smart in a foxy, shrewd way. Another place where you can, so to say, keep your cleverness is “under your cap” — pod čepicí. When someone “has it under his cap” then he is smart, clever, and resourceful and knows his way around. Well, I have no idea what you are hiding under your cap – or behind your ears – but I have to go now, so thanks for listening and na shledanou. — Iva Vokurková

Zpráva z výroční schůze CEFT Jan Vaculík

Výroční schůze České vzdělavatelské nadace státu Texasu se konala dne 21. ledna 2012 v areálu Texaské university v Clementově budově nedaleko vodní fontány. President nadace Woody Smith zahájil schůzi, přivítal přítomné ředitele i hosty, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí.

Každou částku oceníme a vděčně přijmeme. Začala s ničím a bez podpory a vytvořila pěknou tiskovinu.

—SPJST—

Pradlo, CR

Continued from Page 1.

Czech war dead or gatherings to commemorate American fallen soldiers were forbidden, but items buried from the B-24 American Bomber in the Chejlava woods would not be forgotten. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, the villagers erected a cross to honor the Americans. Families of the American crew were notified of the death of their loved ones. Evelyn Goddard and her daughter Vancil, who lived in Ennis were notified. Evelyn received medals and flags from the War Department honoring her husband, Pilot George “Skipper” Goddard. Eventually, she and her daughter moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and started a new life.

Meanwhile, in 1991, back in the Czech Republic, the people of Pradlo decided to carefully dig at the B-24 crash site and remove any remaining parts of the plane and personal items belonging to the American crew members. Among the crew items, they discovered a high school ring. It was a golden circle fat and flat at the top, with detailed etchings of the year 1938 and a large “E” in the center. A search began for the owner of the ring. The search did eventually end in Ennis.

However, the only living member of the Goddard family was the daughter Vancil, and she now lived in Kansas. Lt. Charles Oates, retired and living in Ennis, was contacted by Vaclav Majkut, a man living in Pradlo, Czech Republic, who was in possession of the ring at this time. Lt. Oates received the ring from Majkut and finding Vancil, now married and living in Kansas, did deliver the ring to her. It was a very emotional moment, and she said it was as if the ghost of her father had entered the room. This ghost of Lt. George “Skipper” Goddard entered the village of Pradlo along with Kathleen, Donna, Linda, Annie, and me on August 30, 2011. We carefully drove through the village looking for something that would look like a monument. What we found was a marble column dedicated to the Czech heroes of the village along with a marble memorial dedicated to the 10 Americans who lost their lives near this village, enclosed by a beautiful iron fence. We stopped, opened the iron gate to this enclosure, and could not believe that the people of this town in the Czech Republic actually put up something this beautiful to honor 10 Americans, nine of whom died on Czech ground. We actually stood for a moment in silence. Then, we took pictures. We decided to see if we could find someone willing to come and take pictures of all of us together. We saw a man talking to a lady down the road. We met Pan Pavel Skala, and he agreed to take our picture and explained some of the history of what we were looking at. I introduced him to our group, giving him the first name

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

of each along with their Czech maiden name and last name, and he exclaimed, “ Vi ste vsechci Czechy.” He could not believe that we came to Pradlo to find this place. We told him we were from the town of Ennis, Texas, and he was so excited. He asked if we had visited the site where the plane crashed, and we told him no. He gave us instructions telling us the site would be through the woods, and it would be rough, narrow, and we might get uneasy but to continue until we found it. He said no one would harm us; it was safe. We started out, and we did get a bit

uncomfortable as the road was only one lane and we wondered if we met another car, who would have to back up or how would we pass. It had a few mud holes but we kept going. We came upon a clearing on our left and could not believe our eyes. There was

17

still the hole where the villagers had dug to retrieve what was left at this crash site. There were 10 cement blocks — each was about 24 inches square — laid out in a row, two feet apart leading to a concrete cross with the figure of Christ on it, and below a dedication to the 10 airmen. Across from this was a concrete memorial with the names of the 10 Americans. Near the hole was a tall, leaning steel obelisk with the explanation that it was leaning so that no matter where reflected on it, be it the clouds, the shining sun, or the faces of the villagers, the 10 Americans would always be remembered. A wooden kiosk displaying the history of the site completed this memorial. We are happy that the people of the Czech Republic still honor our American servicemen. As a side note, in 1997, Manuel Frank van Eyck wrote a letter to the SPJST periodical Vestnik asking for information from readers to be included in a book “Silent Heroes” that he was writing. My sister-in-law Marjorie Jarolimek Miller (married to my brother Eddie Miller) saw his letter, and she sent him an Ennis Daily article covering the crash of the B-24 Bomber piloted by Lt. George Goddard. Mr. van Eyck wrote Marjorie that he had a small section of the fuselage and one engine piston from this B-24 Bomber, and he would be willing to mail them to her and the City might be interested in displaying them. Marjorie did receive these items. She was advised that the Ennis Railroad Museum might be interested in displaying the two B-24 pieces. TCGS Annual Meeting “They Came in Ships” held January 28

Texas Czech Genealogical Society held its 11th annual membership meeting, “They Came in Ships”, on January 28, 2012, at the Caldwell Civic Center in Caldwell, Texas. The meeting was conducted by TCGS Acting President Patrick Janis. The meeting was kicked off with a special presentation by Melanie Zavodny, SPJST Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication. Her presentation, “SPJST Vestnik—Archiving the Past for the Future,” provided the membership with a glimpse of the vast genealogical resources and historical data contained in this publication, dating back to the early 1900s.

For many of the TCGS members, this was the first time they understood how the project started and the importance of it. She brought the group upto-date on the progress of this project between SPJST and TCGS. The goal of making the past issues available online is within sight! The future looks bright for research, due to this project. For SPJST, this will be a special year because the Vestnik will be celebrating its 100th anniversary (19122012). Melanie assured the group that information from these past issues will be appearing in future issues of the Vestnik and the Cesky Stopy. Melanie’s well-received presentation set the stage for the remainder of the meeting. Doug Kubicek’s presentation, “Tradition and Reality: The Gulf Coast Steamship ‘Packet’ Companies and Our Czech Ancestors” gave our mem-

bers a new perspective about the conditions that their Czech ancestors faced during their voyage to America and especially the conditions that they faced at the port of Galveston. This was particularly interesting since a great number of our Czech ancestors’ final destination was Galveston. Leo Baca, our resident expert in Czech Passenger Lists explained to the group a method for identifying the ships on which their ancestors came to the United States. Leo has published a nine volume series – Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volumes I-IX, which is recognized as “the Bible” for researching Czech passengers. During the lunch hour, a special treat was provided by Ted Kaspar, who presented an impressive slide presentation of the TCGS sponsored trip to the Czech Republic in September 2011. Before proceeding with the rest of the sessions, Patrick Janis made a special presentation. A surprised Edwin Hlavaty received the TCGS Member of the Year 2011 award. This honor was in recognition of his dedication and ongoing support of TCGS. Edwin continuously works behind the scenes to make TCGS a better organization. Edwin is a 64-year member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. The membership was treated to a new way of sharing family history when Duwain Pingenot shared his own audio-video presentation, “The Migl’s Coming to America.” The presentation was a compilation of individual stories detailing each ancestor’s voyage to America. This presentation was originally designed for the 50th Migl Family Reunion held in Wied, Texas. One of the highlights of the day was the arrival of Captain John Gantt who conducted the first TCGS “Ancestral

VӖSTNÍK

Ship Reunion.” As a ship’s name was called, representatives of the descendents for that ship’s Czech passengers came forward to be recognized. In all, there were 54 ships represented. Knowing that many of the members did not know the names of the ships of their ancestors, special resource materials were made available in the Book Room to assist in their research. Some of those who took advantage of these resource materials, along with the personal assistance of several inhouse genealogists, were able to identify their ancestral ship information. The special entertainment for the day was music from the 1850s and 1860s performed by the Frontier Brigade Band from the Dallas, Texas, area. The band members were dressed in uniforms patterned after the 1859 Marine Band, and they played “over the shoulder” saxhorns similar to the actual brass instruments of the military bands during the Civil War era, giving the attendees a feel for the type of music that their ancestors experienced for the first time in this New Land. Closing out the program, Patrick Janis, who is always searching for new ways to help TCGS members with family research, presented his latest find by explaining how to use free online digital newspaper archives for Texas Czech genealogy. It was a long day, but it was a successful day. Much information was learned, and much was shared. Even though there were seven sessions, the time passed quickly. As the day grew to a close, at-

tendees were overheard making plans to attend the next conference—“Indoor Czech Genealogy Picnic (Bugs and All),” which will be held on Saturday, April 21 at Caldwell Civic Center. Submitted by, Bennie L. Stasny Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

LODGE NO. 146, GALVESTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: The next regular meeting will be held the second Sunday in April, because of Easter Sunday being the first Sunday. The monthly meeting will be held at the Eagles Hall, 1906 Post Office St., Galveston, Texas. Time is 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 1969. I know that a lot of members were wondering if the lodge will ever get started on some fundraising events or not. Well, to be truthful, it takes time and planning in advance. We did come up with a date to have a dance at Eagles Hall on Saturday, April 19. Music will be by the Wilbur Heinsohn seven-piece orchestra, playing old-time and modern music. This band will make its first appearance in Galveston. Members and friends, the instruments in the orchestra are as follows: bass horn, two saxophones, two trumpets, piano, and drums.

The Rule of 72

By James L. Lee, III, CPA

“How long will it take my investment to double?” This is a common question many may have concerning their investments and think a calculator is needed to provide an answer. But a calculator may not be needed, at all. The tool to use is called the Rule of 72 and, best of all; it is simple and free. This is how it works. If an indi- James L. Lee, III vidual has an investment they think will grow at an assumed rate of return per year, then simply dividing that rate of return into 72 will provide a rough estimate of the number of years it will take for the investment to double in size. For example, let’s assume an investment is assumed to grow at an average rate of return of six percent each year. Simply divide six into 72 will give a rough estimate that it will take 12 years for this investment to double (72 ÷ 6 = 12). This formula assumes a fixed annual rate of return and the reinvestment of all earnings. Keep in mind that very few investments offer a guaranteed rate of return and that an investment’s past performance does not guarantee future performance. The rule of 72 may also be used to show the negative power of inflation. This may be an especially handy tool to those individuals in their retirement’s years and, also, for those ap-

proaching the retirement decision. Using this tool an individual can estimate the number of years it will take for his or her cost of living to double. Or put another way, how long before an individual’s purchasing power is cut in half. For example, let’s assume an individual is retired and forecasts an inflation rate of five percent per year. An inflation rate, in general terms, is the rate of increase in the prices of goods and services individuals purchase over time. Forecasting an inflation rate of five percent means the individual is assuming the prices of the goods and services he or she will purchase in the future will increase at a rate of five percent per year. Using the rule of 72, simply dividing five into 72 will provide a rough estimate that the individual’s cost of living will double in 14 to 15 years (72 ÷ 5 = 14.4). Of course, this article is no substitute for a careful consideration of all of the advantages and disadvantages of an investment strategy to meet your goals. Before implementing a significant investment strategy consider consulting your financial advisor.
