Life Is A Gif t! Celebrate It.

Today before you think of saying an unkind word — think of

someone who can’t speak. Before you complain about the taste of your food — think of someone who has nothing to eat. Before you complain about your husband or wife — think of someone who is crying out to God for a companion. Today before you complain about life — think of someone who went too early to heaven. Before you complain about your children — think of someone who desires children but they’re barren. Before you argue about your dirty house someone didn’t clean or sweep — think of the people who are living in the streets. Before whining about the distance you drive — think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet. And, when you are tired and complain about your job — think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wished they had your job. But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another — remember that not one of us are without sin, and we all answer to one maker. And, when depressing thoughts seem to get you down — put a smile on your face and thank God you’re alive and still around. Life is a gift. Live it. Enjoy it. Celebrate it. Fulfill it. Seaton School Preservation Committee expresses thanks to Lodge 177, Academy

The Seaton School Preservation Committee would like to thank Lodge 177, Academy Fraternal Activities Coordinator Bill Hutka and Lodge 177 for its recent donation. We are very fortunate Lodge 177 chose to support the effort to further the Seaton School preservation. The Seaton School preservation started in 2000 and through generous donations such as Lodge 177’s, we are able to continue restoring and preserving this 100-plus year-old building. The Seaton School was established as early as 1885 and moved to its present site in 1900. Rural schools in Bell County District 18 included Komensky, Lost Prairie, Thompson, Little Elm, and Seaton. Seaton School eventually annexed the other rural schools in the district and was the last active Bell County rural school to close. It was annexed into the Rogers district in August 1975. The preservation efforts allow us to continue the existence of an era long lost in other Bell County rural schools. The School hosts a reunion the last Sunday of every April, and we wish to invite Lodge 177

members to attend. The reunion includes Seaton, Lost Prairie, and Komensky school alumni. Once again, thank you for your generous donation! Sincerely, Seaton School Preservation Committee Submitted by Louann Hight —SPJST—

Member impressed with tee-shirt design

Dear Melanie, I was impressed and pleased to see what a great job Brooke Hoelscher did on her SPJST tee-shirt design. It sure encompasses the heart of Texas, SPJST, and depicts some of the wonderful things that make us proud to be Czech descendents. Great job, Brooke! Keep up the great work! God only knows Czech women are some of the greatest cooks around! Maybe this picture should be the cover of a future SPJST cookbook, too . . . but add a kolache to the picture! You are blessed with some great talent . . . keep posting your works of art! Bernadette Bellanger Lodge 97, Placedo —SPJST—

While the above are illustrative of ways in which conflict may arise, the entire subject is so far-reaching and the interrelationships possible within the insurance business so complex that the avoidance of conflict rest basically upon each individual’s ethical standards, integrity and judgment. Annually, on or about the time of the January Supreme Lodge meeting, a request will be made of all directors, officers, and responsible employees to state in writing any activities which conflict with the policy. The statement will be as stated on the attached Exhibit “A.” However, if any officer, director, or responsible employee at any time believes he may be engaged in activities described, he should immediately report such activities to the President.

AUTHORIZATION TO TRANSFER FUNDS Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that Article 33(b) of our By-Laws provides for authorization to transfer funds and pay all general expenses of the Society. Director Ahlstrom moved to authorize any two officers to act as provided in Article 33(b) of our by-laws. Director Rollwitz seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE MATTERS Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska gave a final report on servicing of overfunded UL certificates.

Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer.

PROPOSED BUDGET – 2012 Financial Secretary Vajdak reviewed the proposed budget for 2012. Specific attention was directed to reductions in the proposed actuarial expenses. Line items were reviewed. Discussion was concluded, and the budget was adopted on motion by Director Rollwitz, seconded by Director Ahlstrom. The vote revealed nine in favor and one opposed. Voting in favor: President Vanicek, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska, Director Victorick, Director Wuensche, Director Rollwitz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. DISTRICT TWO Director Wuensche discussed the procedures we follow in the budgeting process. He proposed that if a line item went over the budget, the officer in charge would be required to identify all expenses that made up the overage. It was agreed that this procedure would be helpful. Director Wuensche discussed possibilities of pursuing a semi-adjustable mortgage loan rate. Discussion followed. No action was taken. Recess was taken from 9:25 until 9:35 a.m.

INVESTMENT REPORT Buddie Ballard of Alpha Capital Management distributed a detailed report of investment performance for the year and also from October 31, 2008.

The performance analysis was reviewed in detail. The review included breakdown by each sector and breakdown by maturity. The review included a review of concerns, the outlook and apparent opportunities. The SPJST Investment Policy Statement (IPS) was reviewed, and potential IPS changes were proposed for consideration to reflect our risk tolerance.

The general consensus was to amend the IPS to reduce equity risk to a function of a range not to exceed 50 percent of surplus or some other percentage to be agreed upon. The investment committee and Buddie Ballard will work toward the optimal language change in the IPS after studying the policy of other fraternal benefit societies. A transition period will be needed. The matter will be given due consideration in the future. Report will be made at the next meeting.

There was also consensus that it may be appropriate to transition to amending the IPS to provide that when a fixed income security falls below investment grade, it should be liquidated. The investment committee and Buddie Ballard will work on optimum language changes to the IPS. In the meantime, the investment committee will review any fixed income securities they determine should be sold.

There was a discussion about the possibility of having an AVR review done to determine if there are certain securities can be sold that would free up AVR.

The investment committee and Buddie Ballard will review the IPS to submit language that brackets the extent to which there can be an asset/liability mismatch.

Recess for lunch was taken from 12 noon until 12:45 p.m.

DISTRICT THREE Director Krizan stated that with the convention approaching and the challenges facing the Society, he encouraged all Supreme Lodge members to be available to provide information to the members, especially the delegates who may have questions. He also encouraged the SPJST membership to study the issues presented, do their research and ask questions. Director Krizan made the following announcements:

He acknowledged the good work of Financial Secretary Vajdak in the information and reports he provided.

DISTRICT FIVE Director Pflughaupt expressed concern over information that goes out before it is discussed by the Supreme Lodge, and it can result in bad information being distributed. He suggested the Insurance Department field meetings be held after the Supreme Lodge meetings. One item that was not conclusive and finalized by the Supreme Lodge dealt with agents’ E&O coverage. He emphasized the need for communication and cooperation.

Director Pflughaupt commented he appreciated the opportunity to serve on the audit committee and appreciated the improvements resulting for the benefit of the Society.

He commented that the expertise that Roy Vajdak brings to the Supreme Lodge is very good.

Director Pflughaupt invited all to attend the District Five meeting on April 15 at Lodge 81, Needville. DISTRICT SIX Director Ahlstrom complimented Financial Secretary Vajdak on working with the officers to prepare a budget.

Director Ahlstrom invited all to the District Six meeting in Moravia on March 4.

DISTRICT SEVEN Director Bayer thanked the audit committee for the past four years work. He thanked Financial Secretary Vajdak for providing helpful information. Director Bayer announced the following:

March 4 – District Seven meeting with a delegate caucus afterward April 22 – Annual Banquet at Lodge 107, Floresville followed by a celebration of Lodge 107’s 100th anniversary

DISTRICT ONE Director Victorick acknowledged the cohesiveness during the Supreme Lodge meeting. He thanked Financial Secretary Vajdak for putting the budget together.

Director Victorick thanked everyone for their input which was very important. Director Victorick handed out an insurance issued/lapse summary report. The report indicated a great improvement in certificates remaining on our books. Director Victorick handed out a report of policies issued in 2011. The total certificates issued were 1,372, total lapses are 782, and total surrenders are 722.

Director Victorick discussed the need for written goals and a business plan prepared by the officers. He commented that goals must be written to provide direction, inform the membership, and provide a measurement tool.

Director Pflughaupt discussed the need to set a time frame for goals and urged that they be formally approved. The membership needs to know the business plan and goals so that they can measure our performance. Director Victorick handed out a list of SPJST goals for 2012 as follows:

SPJST GOALS FOR 2012 All Departments 1. Create an environment of teamwork among the officers, departments, and the staff to project a positive image of unity to our membership, communities, and the general public. 2. Lodge 17, New Tabor Member Vlasta Surovik Celebrates 90th Birthday

Vlasta Surovik celebrated her 90th birthday at Cooks Point Community Center on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Approximately 90 of her friends and family came to share in fellowship and share memories of her life. Her minister Mark Sebek gave a prayer and a short overview of Vlasta’s life was given by daughter Lillian Beasley with her other children presenting a thank-you to Vlasta. Her brothers, Frank and Albert Surovik of Caldwell, were present and her sister, Fannie Kovar, resides in Copperas Hollow Nursing Home in Caldwell. Vlasta was born to Frank J. and Frances (Surovik) Surovik on February 13, 1922, in New Tabor, which is near Caldwell, on the farm which is still in the family. She was the firstborn child with five siblings to follow. She attended New Tabor school and was active in New Tabor 4-H. Hard work on the farm was a must in those days, from picking, chopping cotton, hauling water, gardening, preserving, and sewing all their clothes. She became a quilt-maker, good kolache and homemade bread maker, and cooked the best meals for her family. Vlasta and husband Paul, who passed away in October 1994, made their home in College Station, where they became involved in Bethel Lutheran Church and later attended Bryan/College Station Brethren Church, where Vlasta still remains an active member. She has been in many Bible study groups learning and living as Jesus has taught us. She worked for the Consolidated School cafeteria and many restaurants throughout her life. She loves the game of 42 which is a

continued tradition through the generations of her family. She loves to have a vegetable garden and a rose and flower garden. Vlasta loves to travel. She has gone to many states throughout her lifetime. She married Paul Surovik in March 1944. They were blessed with six children—Albert and Carolyn Surovik of Caldwell, Lillian and Jerry Beasley of Caldwell, Roy and Jina Surovik of Mertens, James Surovik of Bryan (deceased October 18, 2009), Nelson and Teri Surovik of Arlington, and Patricia Surovik of College Station. Vlasta has 11 grandchildren, and two are deceased. She also has 11 great-grandchildren. Vlasta has attended many SPJST activities that her grandchildren have been involved in, including District Youth Achievement Days to listen to her grandsons present their king speeches. She also enjoys watching great-grandson Weston Beasley dancing the beseda. She is a fourth generation SPJST family—Vlasta; her daughter Lillian and husband Jerry Beasley; her grandson Chris Beasley and wife Lindy; and great-grandsons Weston and Wyatt Beasley. We thank God that He has given us our mother these extra years as Ps. 90:10 says,”Seventy years are given to us! And some may even live to eighty . . . but teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.” This is the motto our mother has lived by and has preached to her children. —SPJST—

They were Lynda Novak, Martha Franka, and Joyce Moore. Lynda asked the present officers if they would accept the offices again and they said yes. We need a correspondence secretary. Deanna read an inspiration, “Look out for your Neighbor.” A motion was made that we adjourn, and we adjourned with our quotation—“Mejte se vzdycky radi” —“Always love one another.” Do vyhry gifts were drawn and handed out. In the absence of Carolyn Nemec, we said the blessing. We enjoyed a potluck luncheon. Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 1, 2012. The theme will be “Leaping Leprechauns” with an Irish dish luncheon afterward. We’ll be playing bingo rather than the do vyhry drawing. If you have any Leaping Leprechauns, please bring them for display. Thank you and please join us. We will elect officers. Evelyn Cechan, Reporter —SPJST—

SPJST Financial University

What Goes Down Must Come Up By James L. Lee, III, CPA

Managing your investment portfolio is not easy. It requires a constant awareness of market conditions such as the interest rate environment. It also requires an understanding of how a change in interest rates may affect performance of your investment strategies to be able to determine the possible reactions to any change in rates. James L. Lee, III Then, you have to be able to factor in any expenses related to making or failing to take action. Finally, you must decide upon and take the appropriate action — which may be inaction if your current financial plan is working for you. Other People’s Money. The Federal Reserve is the national bank of the United States. It controls the money supply and thereby affects the cost and availability of money: interest rates and available credit. The U.S. banks borrow money from the Federal Reserve to lend to their customers. The interest rate charged by the Federal Reserve is called the Discount Rate. The higher the Discount Rate, the less money banks are willing to borrow and push into the economy. If too little money is pushed into the economy, consumers and businesses may have less money to spend on goods and services. Current Forecast? Stagnant or Rising Interest Rates. What goes down must come up . . . eventually. Interest rates just tend to work that way, which has many investors currently reevaluating their investment strategies. It’s a

good idea, but don’t be too quick to make changes. Sure, rising interest rates can hurt some strategies. Other strategies, however, can aid you in managing the risks of rising interest rates, including a laddered bond portfolio. The goal is to identify the appropriate strategies for you. Time Lines. Over time your financial goals, the amount of time you have to invest and your tolerance for risk will change and so will your financial plan. Today, most investors understand this and realize the value of diversifying their investment assets among stocks, bonds, and cash equivalents. Not only can you diversify across asset classes, you can diversify across investment strategies. The idea, bearing comprehensive financial planning in mind, is to combine and implement the appropriate strategies in the right proportion to insulate your investment portfolio from the impact of rising interest rates. Investment planning strategies should never be implemented in a knowledge vacuum. Your financial advisor can help you learn how to diversify across investment strategies by choosing and implementing complementary strategies that balance risk and reward within your comprehensive financial plan.

memory of “all skate.” More than 125 youth, guests, and adults enjoyed skating and staying up during several new dances. It was really an exciting event as there were youth members representing seven youth clubs in District Two. Thank you, youth members for making it such a great success. It was so good to see many youth that I have not seen since Youth Achievement Day. Everyone enjoyed skating, visiting, and talking about the upcoming events. Youth clubs represented were Cyclone, Seaton, Beyersville, Holland, Temple, Falls County, Round Rock, and Morgan’s Point. Following skating, everyone was treated to pizza at CiCi’s. Our next big event is the District Two Spring Meeting which will be held in Beyersville on Sunday, March 18. I ask all youth and adults to enter the Czech Easter Egg (Kraslice) Decorating Contest. Participation and prizes will be given to all youth. Contest rules are on page 38 of the youth handbook or online at www.spjst.org in the youth section Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. All entries must be registered by those participating and be registered by 2 p.m. Following the meeting, there will be an Easter egg hunt for the young ones. We ask that each family bring at least six stuffed eggs for the hunt. The district youth will furnish the prizes. Following the egg hunt, Lodge 48 will serve a delicious meal. I hope that once again, as with the skating party, we can have a great participation of all our youth clubs. Thank you, District Two members, for all you do in supporting our youth. Dear Vestnik Readers, I made all As during the past nine weeks. My friend, Victoria, and I are at both of our sisters’ band concert. My dad had a birthday last week. My sister,

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: back in action

High school soccer is in full swing. The Churchill Varsity team improved their record to 9-0-2 this week as they defeated McArthur. Last week, the team opened district play with the rivalry game against the district’s number one ranked team, Reagan High School. The rivalry created record attendance, and the teams fought to gain an edge. Reagan had an incredible scoring opportunity with a penalty kick (solo player against the keeper at the 12-yard line). The Churchill fans held their breath as the freshman keeper tried to prepare for what he hoped to be an extraordinary save, late in the second half. Although the keeper guessed wrong on dive direction, the ball drifted upward, hitting the crossbar, and bouncing over the goal as the stands erupted. The game finished in a 0-0 tie. We were happy

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: debates continue

Last week, my debate teacher called me to the front of the class to present me with a National Forensics League (NFL) Silver Pendent. This award is presented to outstanding first year debaters and speakers. I am now qualified to earn an NFL Diamond Pendent next year, with the possibility of earning the highest award of the Onyx Pendent during my high school career. I will wear this first award proudly on my coat lapel in my upcoming debate competition. I am finding debate to be a fun, informative class where I can express my opinions and practice speech delivery. We study many current events and relate them to historical events to build cases “for” and “against” various topics. I especially enjoy listening to the BBC Radio Broadcast once a week to hear the top world stories summarized in seven minutes. The things I learn in debate are also very useful in other classes, especially in English. Fraternally, Sammy Hoggard Vice President —SPJST—

Resolution of Sympathy

In Memoriam

Expression of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor, No. 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, GEORGE “BUD” PETTY, age 58, who passed away peacefully, Friday, December 30, 2011, with his beloved family by his side. Brother Petty was born October 14, 1953, in Loraine, Texas, to parents Charles and Zada Hughes Bud Petty Petty. He moved around a lot until he met and married Carol Trcalek on May 5, 1979, at New Tabor Brethren Church in Burleson County. He graduated in the Class of 1972 from Navasota High School. He and Carol were blessed with three children. Bud developed something special with each of his children and grandchildren. With Marshall, it was spending quality time together camping. Talking history with Joshawa was another special way of sharing of himself. Maylee enjoyed eating candy with her grandfather. And, with Tyler and Tabor, he liked to talk baseball. Bud had only one granddaughter with dark hair, and he spent a lot of time admiring Millison. Other interests of his were the Longhorns, and Tae-Kwon-do with Hunter. No one wanted to play Trivia Pursuit with him because he was a master and let you know it, too. He was an avid fantasy footballer. After all else, he cherished his time playing dominoes with Carol on the back porch. He was a conscientious worker and loved his job with Halliburton. Bud was a member of New Tabor Brethren Church where he also served as elder. Bud was called to the Walk to Emmaus which originated from Cursillo. This walk was so spiritually profound that he shared it with Carol, and they both became closer to God and to each other. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. He also served in the United States Army Reserve. Brother Petty was preceded in death by mother Zada Hughes and fa-

ther-in-law Rusty Hejl. Surviving Bud are his wife of 33 years, Carol Petty of New Tabor; son Marshall Petty and wife Roxanne of Caldwell; daughters Mica Sandner and Michael Ward of New Tabor and Mabrey Dowell and husband Tye of New Tabor; father Charles Petty; grandchildren Tyler Sandner, Joshawa and Hunter Petty, Tabor, Maylee, and Millison “Doc” Dowell; mother-inlaw Gladys Hejl; siblings Ted Petty and wife Linda of Lubbock, Irene Graham and husband Ken of Loraine, Bobby Smith and wife Kristene of Mumford, Mary Sleeth and husband Tony of Deanville, John Petty and wife Marie of Bryan, Vickie Taylor and husband Gary of Waxahachie, Doyle Petty of Caldwell, and Charlene Dodson and husband Steven of Waxahachie; sisters-in-law Betty Suehs and husband Donnie of Caldwell, Susan Skrabanek and husband Gary of New Tabor, and Donna Jones and husband Bruce of New Tabor; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends that will miss him dearly. Services for Brother Petty were held Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at New Tabor Brethren Church at 10 a.m. with Pastor David Johnson officiating. Burial followed in New Tabor Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Dalibor Jerabek, Dave Schoenemann, Ronald Sebesta, Dennis Drgac, Kyle Skrabanek, Logan Jones, Pee Wee Surovik, and Ralph Narro. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Paul Bruce Ihlenfeldt, George Zavodny, Paul Skrabanek, William Brymer, Daniel Brymer, Jerry Schafer, Ben Frank Trcalek, and Curtis Cannon. For those wishing to give memorial donations, they may be made to New Tabor Brethren Church Memorial Fund, Hus School Encampment, or SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club. May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace, and his memory remain with us forever. Respectfully submitted, Resolution Committee Stanley Mrnustik Ben Trcalek Susan Skrabanek —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, EVELYN VLASTA WALLA. Evelyn Vlasta Walla, 88, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2012. She was born on the family farm in Williamson County on March 15, 1923. Her parents Joe and Emilie Kotrla Jirasek were descended Evelyn Walla from early Texas Czech pioneers. Evelyn attended public schools including two one room school houses and Taylor High School. She was a straight A student and took great pride in her academic prowess. She married C.C. Cavanaugh, Jr. and they later moved to Houston. This union would produce five children— Evalyn Durigan, Cynthia Wheeler, Carole Mehau, John Cavanaugh, and Patricia Mathis. All but Cynthia would survive their mother. In the early 1950s, Evelyn went to work as a typist at the mortgage banking firm of T.J. Bettis Company. Her strong work ethic and intelligence enabled her to rise through the ranks to become vice president of Lomis and Nettleton West, as the company became known. She was instrumental in writing the language used in word processing. Evelyn relished her work in the business world. She was an active church member most of her life having been baptized and confirmed in the Brethren church in Taylor, Texas. Evelyn was a Sunday school teacher and deacon of the Peace Presbyterian Church in Jacinto City. She later joined and attended Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Her faith sustained her all her life. Evelyn was married a second time in 1971 to Max Walla. She and Max would raise his youngest son, Shawn Walla. Evelyn and Max would enjoy 33 years together until his death. She loved music and was active for many years in SPJST Lodge 88, Houston and its Czech Choral Club. Evelyn and Max enjoyed attending dances at the lodge and could often be

found on the dance floor waltzing or doing the polka. Evelyn was an excellent seamstress who fashioned many beautiful garments for herself and her family. She delighted in flowers and nature and implanted this love into her children. Evelyn was a gracious loving woman whose quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings Gladys Jones and Jerry Jirasek. Evelyn leaves a very large family behind to cherish her memories—her four children and their spouses; three stepchildren and their families; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; assorted cousins; nephews; nieces; and aunt Dora Wilson. Visitation with the family was Saturday, February 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Advantage Howard-Glendale Funeral Home where funeral services were held at 12 noon. Interment followed in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. May our departed sister rest in peace. Resolution Committee Gladys A. Havemann Celestine Darilek Mary Roznovsky —SPJST—

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, DAVID C. BARTEK. David Cliff Bartek passed away suddenly on January 31, 2012, at the age of 59, in a local hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he and his beloved wife, Jen Sue, had been living for 15 years. He was born on August 23, 1952, in Belton, Texas, to Ben C. Bartek and Agnes David C. Bartek Dana Bartek, where he grew up as one of four children. He was married to Jen Sue Brandes on July 16, 1978, in Austin, Texas, where he and Jen had both graduated from the University of Texas. David graduated from Belton High School in 1971, where he was a “Wall of Honor” graduate, and lovingly referred to as “Bull” Bartek. David was a first team All-District player in football his sophomore year. As a junior, he was first team All-State on both offense and defense. His senior year, he was voted senior class president and was selected as a first team All-State linebacker. He was also selected to Texas Football Magazine’s Super Team as one of 11 players (regardless of class of school) and was selected to Sunkists Coach and Athlete All-American Team. David was selected to play in the Texas Coaches Association AllStar game and made 13 tackles in the South’s victory. David’s athletic career at Belton High also included more than a few district, regional, and AllState honors in track and field shot put and discus categories. At the University of Texas, he played under the legendary coach, Darrell Royal, and was back-up fullback to two eventual All- Americans, Roosevelt Leaks and Earl Campbell. He graduated from “The University” in 1975 with a bachelor of business administration degree. He was very proud of this accomplishment and his time at Texas, he was a Longhorn to the max. David held sales positions with Montgomery Ward, Clampitt Paper, and Interstate Batteries, and taught

27

school as a substitute teacher in Westlake Independent School District, before he and Jen moved to Las Vegas in 1997. David is survived by his loving wife Jen. David and Jen were desperately in love, were the loves of each other’s lives, and enjoyed life to the fullest. He is also survived by brother Bernard Bartek and wife Suzanne and children Tracie and Clinton; Jen’s brothers Allan and wife Melissa of Austin, Texas, and Michael and wife Delores of Temple; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends. David was a gentle, loving, kind, and sweet man and will be missed by all. Finally, and most importantly, David was a Christian, and is now at the feet of Jesus in Heaven, worshiping and praising the Lord. John 3:16 says that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” David believed and is with Jesus today. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce sedmá Lesson 7 Pokracovat. Continued.

The English “I am sorry” in Czech means Je mi líto or Ja lituji. The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of “I am sorry,” but generally, we can say that Je mi líto is used much more sparingly than “I am sorry.” The latter can often be translated odpusťte or promiňte.

Jake se máte (máš)?/Jak se vám (ti) daří?—How are you? Děkuji, dobře—Fine, thank you. Nestojí to za nic—It’s not worth anything. špatně, mizerně—bad, miserable

Jake se máte (máš)? or Jak se vám (ti) daří? are not quite as common a greeting as in English. In Czech, you ask it when you want to know how your friend is dong not instead of “good morning”.

The answer to Jak se máš? In Czech, you may hear a little longer story than the stereotype “fine, thank you”. The European people do not share the American optimistic outlook and more often than not, you may hear an answer more in the form of a complaint.
