Jesse Pospisil announces candidacy for District Two Director

Dear Members, My name is Jesse Pospisil of Lodge 29, Taylor, and I am announcing my candidacy for the position of District Two Director. In 1968, I joined SPJST and served as vice president of Lodge 29 during the 1970s. I have also been a member of the Lodge 29 Property Committee for eight years, having served as chairmen for six years. In January 2011, I was appointed as a sales agent for Lodge 29, and I hold a General Lines Agent License with the State of Texas. In March 2006, I was elected to serve on the board of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center (formerly SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) as the District Two Representative. The Museum’s board of directors entrusted me to the treasurer’s position in July 2006. During the renovation of the Museum’s building, located next to the SPJST Home Office in Temple, I served as chairman of the building committee. The renovation was successfully completed in 2009. I am a 1966 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Taylor. I joined the United States Army Reserve in April 1966 and retired as a Master Sergeant in April 1996. I also retired from the Texas Department of Transportation with more than 34 years of service. My wife Linda and I will be married for 45 years in June. We have two daughters and four grandchildren who are all active Lodge 29 members. My daughters led the youth club at Lodge 29 for a several years, and my grandchildren continue to be interested in the activities that SPJST provides, especially camp. If elected District Two Director, I will ask myself a question before any

Jesse Pospisil

vote. How will my vote affect: 1) SPJST - the Society as a whole; 2) the members; 3) the local lodges, and 4) the youth clubs? As your Director, I will do everything in my power to support the lodges, to work with all the members, and to offer ideas. I am also very supportive of our youth program. I will do everything I can to promote the youth because as everyone knows, they are our future! My goal is to make this wonderful organization and District Two even better than it has been in the past 115 years. I will only be a phone call away if any member has concerns or issues that need to be discussed. If I can’t answer that question on the spot, I will get an answer as soon as possible. Thank you for considering me for this very important position. Fraternally, Jesse Pospisil —SPJST—

VӖSTNÍK

Chester Jenke, Sr. announces candidacy for District Seven Director

Dear Members and Delegates of District Seven: I proudly announce my candidacy for District Seven Director. Since 2006, I have served SPJST as State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. During this time, I have assisted lodges and local lodge officers across the state in every day activities, training, and filing the necessary reports required by the Home Office. I have also assisted with many state and local lodge activities and tournaments, numerous district meetings/fall fun days, meal preparations, and local lodge fundraisers (including peeling potatoes and washing dishes) throughout the state. I have worked to reorganize inactive lodges and helped these lodges in Districts One, Two, Four, Five, Six, and Seven with meetings and activities to reestablish them in their communities. I submitted applications to the State Historical Commissioner for the historical marker in Fayetteville, Texas, to mark the site of the first SPJST Home Office. I have coordinated the bowling tournament for the Fraternal Alliance of Texas for the past three years to raise funds for scholarships and have assisted with the Legislative Awareness Day at the State Capitol in Austin for three years. The Legislative Awareness Day is an effort to make State Representatives aware of Texas’ fraternal benefit societies and their mission in the communities that the State Representatives serve. My wife Colleen is always by my side assisting with state, district, and local lodge events and activities. In June, we will celebrate 48 years of wedded bliss. We have three grown children who have families of their own. In our off time, we enjoy spending time with our six grandchildren and one great-grandson. I am a strong supporter of the SPJST Youth Program and youth clubs because these young members are the future leaders of SPJST and this great country. I believe our youth should be given the opportunity to be an active part of their lodges in the early years so they can become familiar with the operations and proceedings of the SPJST local lodge system as an active youth club member or just as a member of the adult lodge if the local lodge does not yet have a youth club. As a charter member of Lodge 258, Seguin, I have served in the position of president since the lodge was organized on October 4, 2005. In December

Chester Jenke, Sr.

2005, the lodge was officially chartered. Along with the officers and interested members in the community, I conducted many meetings prior to the chartering of the lodge and played a major role in chartering the lodge. Although I currently have very little time to pursue the duties of a sales agent, I hold a General Lines Agent License - Life, Accident, Health and HMO, which was issued on January 1, 2000. Instead of receiving this license by being grandfathered, I chose to prove to myself that I was capable of passing the state exam to get my license. I continue to fulfill the state requirements of 15 hours of continuing education each year, and I attend sales meetings and seminars regularly to keep up with the insurance regulations and changes. I hope to someday devote more time to recruiting members for Lodge 258, District Seven, and SPJST. Prior to my position as SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, I became actively involved with fraternal insurance in April 1971, when I joined the Sons of Hermann Fraternal Benefit Society, based in San Antonio, Texas. That is when I realized that fraternal insurance societies have much more to offer than just life insurance. I learned the benefits were for the living as well as the named beneficiary. One year later, I was appointed as a sales representative. In 1989, I was employed by the Sons of Hermann Fraternal Benefit Society. My career began in the marketing department as traveling auditor and as special representative. In April 1990, I earned my FIC (Fraternal Insurance Counselor) designation. When

VӖSTNÍK

Sons of Hermann added annuities and IRAs to their portfolio, I was asked to serve as annuity director. In this position, I trained agents, educated members about annuities, set up the annuity/IRA department, and was responsible for seeing that this program got off to a successful start and continued to operate smoothly. Once this was accomplished, I assisted in the accounts receivable department and assisted in the mortgage loan department in addition to the duties of annuity director. In May 1997, I returned to the marketing department, where I served as marketing coordinator hiring and training sales representatives, routing membership inquiries ,and coordinating continuing education classes and workshops for local agents and lodge officers. Also, in 1997, I was appointed to serve on the board of directors of the Texas Fraternal Insurance Counselors where I served in every capacity finishing my appointment as president in 2004. In December 2002, I earned the FICF (Fraternal Insurance Counselor Fellow) designation. In May 2005, I retired from Sons of Hermann. After a year of retirement, I realized that I was not ready for retirement and applied for the position of State Fraternal Activities Coordinator with SPJST and was selected to fill this position. There is much work that needs to be accomplished in District Seven. No new lodges have been organized or chartered in the past four years (since the previous convention). No effort has been made to start new lodges to re-

place the seven lodges that have been “reassigned.” If District Seven and SPJST are to move forward, our attention must be focused on assisting all lodges in the district to stay active in the communities they serve and also on starting new lodges. I will represent the district for the benefit of all members at Supreme Lodge meetings, strive to assist marketing to provide quality plans that benefit members at competitive rates and still be profitable for SPJST, and make sure the State Youth Director stays current on all youth-affiliated projects to keep youth interested and involved in activities to groom future leaders for SPJST—just to name a few. My fraternal work experience combined with my past performance as SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator speaks for itself as for my qualifications to lead District Seven in the coming years. When elected, I will devote all my time to District Seven as a full-time director. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to contact me by phone (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke1@aol.com or cejenke@gvec.net. I plan to visit with each lodge in District Seven in the very near future, and I look forward to seeing you at the Convention. In closing,, I ask for your support and votes at the 2012 SPJST Convention in Killeen on June 11 to 13. Fraternally, Chester Jenke, FICF —SPJST—

Conclusions Reached During the Special Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held on January 28, 2012 at the Temple Convention Center, Temple, Texas

The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek. The following members of the Supreme Lodge were present: Brian Vanicek, President; Gene McBride, Vice President; Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer; Donnie Victorick – District One/Chairman of the Board; Bobby Wuensche – District Two; Johnnie Krizan – District Three; Billy Rollwitz – District Four; Larry W. Pflughaupt – District Five; Michael Ahlstrom – District Six/Vice Chairman of the Board; and Robert J. Bayer – District Seven. The purpose of the meeting was to review a decision made during the December 5 and 6, 2011, Special Meeting of the Supreme Lodge concerning the SPJST Risk Management Program. New information was brought forward,

and new developments were considered. The first action was a decision to renew an expiring professional liability policy. A previous action would have allowed it to expire without renewal. Action was then taken on naming an agent of record which required reconsidering a decision made during the December 2011 special meeting. The agent of record serving in that capacity during 2011 was renamed. It was agreed that the Society Risk Management program will again be evaluated early in October 2012. The meeting adjourned at 12:20 p.m. Fraternally submitted, Leonard Mikeska Secretary-Treasurer —SPJST—

From the Fraternal Department State FAC: April Fraternal Updates SPJST Model Lodge Earlier in March, President Vanicek mailed a letter to all lodge presidents telling members about the Model Lodge Program that the SPJST Supreme Lodge is seeking to communicate. An article also appeared in the March 14 Vestnik. Please review the letter and contact President Vanicek (800) 727-7578 or myself (210) 4133053 or email cejenke@gvec.net if you have any questions or to set up a presentation for your lodge. Like President Vanicek stated, “Consider it to be continuing education for lodge leaders.” Email Address My new email address is cejenke@gvec.net. Yes, finally after many years of frustration and patience, high speed internet is now available in my area at an affordable rate. I feel like I have emerged out of the dark and joined civilization! Please make a note of the change of address. I will continue to keep the old address for several months, just in case someone does not get the new address and in order that I do not miss any mail.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Thanks to all members and lodges who participated in this year’s 100 Pen-

Join Hands Day I have been hearing about some great projects being planned for this year’s participation. Hope your plans are progressing well for Join Hands Day, which will be observed May 5. It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together! The goal for this year is 55 lodges to participate. Take plenty of pictures and get them to your local newspaper so residents in your community will know what you are doing for the community and to the Vestnik so we may share your project with other members. Do not forget that the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local lodges who partner with the youth club or some other youth organization in their community. This money is to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event on line at www.spjst.org. Click on Join Hands Day and the web page will come up. You must complete step 1 and step 2 in order to qualify for the incentive money. If you have already submitted the paper registration to the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator’s office, disregard step 1 and go to step 2. Following confirmation of receipt of your project from the Join Hands Day association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the local lodge. If you need more information for planning your project, please contact me by email cejenke@gvec.net or phone (210) 413-3053. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas.

SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament The SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament will be held at Lions Park in Temple, Texas on Saturday, May 12. Adults (ages 16 and above) will be able to participate. Teams will consist of two persons (two male, two female, or mixed – one male, one female).

The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence in honor of deceased and/or sick members. Secretary Margaret Mikeska read the minutes from the previous meeting, and they were approved as read. Treasurer’s report, bar report, and FAC report were all given next.

Assistant Youth Leader Brenda Maddux gave the youth report. They had their meeting on Saturday, March 11 at the hall. There were 18 youth, 16 adults, and one youth guest present. They have a lot of things going on right now and are working on some future projects. Their next meeting will be Saturday morning, April 7 at the hall. I just may attend this one myself. They have a lady who is going to teach them how to make kolaches. Secretary Margaret read correspondence. We received a letter from Dorothy Vitek asking us to sponsor her at Relay for Life walk for the American Cancer Society. We have sponsored her for several years, and we will continue to do so. We also received a letter from Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek discussing exactly what the SPJST organization is all about. We then had a lengthy discussion about our Mother’s Day Barbecue Dinner. Yes, we will be having it on Mother’s Day in May. There had been

We were pleased to have District Two Director Bob Wuensche and his wife Ruth at our meeting. Thank you for being there and for the door prizes. And, a big thank you for matching our donation to Mrs. Vitek. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped on the Sunday afternoon that the Texas Polka Music Museum held its fundraiser at Lodge 24. It turned out really well, and there was quite a big crowd at Flag Hall that day. We had a lot of folks ask why we don’t have some Sunday afternoon dances. Well, the main reason we don’t do a lot of things that we could do is due to the lack of help. But we discussed it at the meeting, and we may have some dances in the future. Lodge 88, Houston:  “The Chandelier Ballroom”

SPJST Lodge 88, Houston has a bit of news for those who do not know the history of our chandelier. Our Ballroom has always been known as The Chandelier Ballroom. Our Chandelier was brought back from Czechoslovakia in 1965 for our new building. We felt that now it was in dire need of refurbishing. The Memorial Fund contributions were used for this project. The membership honors the memories of our loved ones and remembers their dedication to the lodge. We acquired several bids. The one we chose was The House of Glass—in business for 60 years and owned and operated by Art and Lynn Graeter. They did a wonderful job. The Chandelier was cleaned and rewired; old beads were taken off because they were plastic; and new crystals were added. The picture shows what the chandelier represents. The base is a flower pot, the arms represent the leaves, and in the center comes out the flowers extending to the ceiling.

The membership in 1965 thought the chandelier was too straight up and too small for the ballroom so additions were made by the ladies at the lodge in 1965. They strung beads and added crystals to the Chandelier making its appearance seem larger. When Mr. Graeter saw that the beads were plastic and the prisms were missing and stained from the cigarette smoke (from when you could smoke in the hall), he knew what had to be done. He removed the beads and the old prisms, and ordered new ones from the Czech Republic which took several months. We now have a beautiful chandelier, and we are still known as “The Chandelier Ballroom.” So please, come visit us. I hope you enjoyed a little bit of SPJST Lodge 88 history. All officers answered the roll call except Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha. We had a moment of silence for departed members Charlie Baettcher and Jerry Kubala. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read the minutes, and since there weren’t any corrections, they were approved as read. She also reminded the lodge members that next month on April 15, we will have the district meeting. Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha read his report, and it was approved as read. Bradley also read Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha’s report and it was approved as read. Under old business, Jeanette Newman announced that she put the scholarship articles in the local papers and the Vestnik. Also, someone commented on how nice the roses and the trees looked that Tom Stavinoha planted. Also under old business, Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall reminded everyone that Join Hands Day will be on May 5. Willie Mae said that she will coordinate with the S.P.J.S.T. Construction Begins at Lodge 88, Houston

Pictured are artist’s renderings of the newly redesigned front (left photo) and back of Lodge 88, Houston. The remodel was approved by members in the October 2011 monthly meeting. City construction permits were re-

Under new business, Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha mentioned the summer camp at Cooper Farm in the latter part of July for children of local lodges. Also, under new business, Special Funds Chairman Tom Stavinoha sent word with Bradley for us to vote on whether or not to refund money for a rental cancellation. It was voted to refund half of the money. Under other business, President Vincent Newman read the fraternal activities coordinator report from Chester Jenke. He also reminded us about Join Hands Day, the upcoming State 42 Tournament, the Bloomin’

Temple Festival on April 21, the End of Summer Getaway, the SPJST Cookbook, and the SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament date change to May 12. Also, Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha announced that he procured the SPJST Float for the Needville Youth Fair Parade on April 21. He also reminded members that we have a queen candidate riding the float this year. Her name is Katy Janda. Next, we had representatives for the District Five Spring Meeting talk to us about our upcoming meeting on April 15. They went through the itinerary of the day and answered questions we had about the meeting. Door prize winners were George Abschneider, Dorothy Kuban, Leonora Marek, and Winnifred Susan. Congratulations to our lucky winners. For our next meal on April 15, it

The first order was business was to elect a secretary for Lodge 151 since the secretary’s position was still opened. Janie Bucek was elected to be the secretary. Afterwards, District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom installed all the officers. The roll was called, and all officers were present. President Gerald Macha welcomed District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and wife Kathy to our meeting. The December minutes and treasurer’s report were provided to the members before the meeting so a motion was made to dispense with the reading of the minutes and treasurer’s report, and the motion was seconded. After the minutes and treasurer’s report were reviewed by the members, they were approved. A thank you note from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 for the $100 donation made by the lodge for their Christmas fund was read. Next, a letter about our lodge’s refund check for 2011 was read. Correspondence was also read about a death claim. FAC Janie Bucek reported on the upcoming SPJST activities. She informed the members that Join Hands Day will be held on May 5, and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive would end on March 31. District Six Rest Home Director Charles Bucek reported that the administrator at S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville had resigned, but another administrator had been selected. Also, he reported all of the dis-

eased pine trees had to be cut down at the Needville Rest Home. New trees will be planted to replace the pine trees. David Bucek gave the cemetery report. He stated the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization plans to lay some more sidewalks at the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. Second, he stated the text for SPJST Moravia Cemetery’s historical marker still has not been written. Since the funds for the

Texas Historical Commission (THC) were cut, only one person is in charge of writing the inscriptions. Last of all, he informed us that the THC has approved a historical marker for the SPJST Shiner Cemetery. This was our first quarterly lodge meeting at Wharton Depot Museum. The members were asked if they wanted to continue to have their meetings at this location or change the location of our meetings. After discussing the matter, the members decided to hold all of our meetings at Wharton Depot Museum. The lodge members decided to purchase a one-quarter page ad in the Official SPJST Convention Souvenir Book. Carolyn Bucek made a motion to donate to the SPJST Scholarship Fund which was seconded. A $50 donation was made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of the following deceased Lodge 151 members: Joe Chumchal, Jr., James Tinsely Lane, Edna June Johnson, Landis Kopecky, and Billy C. Dorris. District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom announced that the SPJST District Six Fall Meeting will be held in Victoria on September 30. The 2012 SPJST Convention is June 11 to 13. Since our quarterly meetings are held on the second Monday of the month, he reminded us that we need to change the date of our June meeting. A motion was made and seconded to schedule our next quarterly meeting

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 15, 2012. Ann Clagett, Pat Fowler, Eleanora Pelzel, Dorothy Prachyl, and I arrived around at 8 a.m. We started stretching Pat Fowler’s quilt and arranging table and chairs. Ann Clagett did a beautiful job decorating our tables in the Easter theme. By then Irene Prachyl, Ginny Svehlak, Geraldine Valek, Georgia Wensowitch, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Georgia Holy, Dorothy Bobalek, and Margaret Martinek came and most were quilters. By lunch time, we had 18 members and four guests — Olga Krysinski,

Joe, Jerry, and Julius. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. As always, we had many beautiful, delicious dishes. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to our committee — Ginny Svehlak, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Joyce Ehrenberger, and Libbie Vrla. After lunch, President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Jodie Slovak and Cecilia Blazek. The minutes were read by Secretary Margaret, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced the March birthday celebrants—Georgia Wensowitch and

Mary Zabojnik. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Georgia. Mary was in Louisiana for her 70th birthday. I hope she was lucky. I’m sure she enjoyed herself. Mary’s children and sister and brother-in-law will be hosting her with a big party on March 17. Mary, we wish you many more happy birthdays. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt for Ann Clagett in April, Joan Strunc in May, our Sewing Circle Christmas quilt in June, and July is our elephant sale, and show-and-tell. Ann Clagett read a thank you from Milton and Anne Tupy for remembering their aunt Annie Zvolanek with our donation to Dallas Life Foundation in her memory. ing good. Willy Matus took her granddaughter to Galveston for spring break. Victoria Vlk is having company - her sister from up north - visiting, and we had hoped to see Kay Lynn Kovar since it was spring break, but I hear that she cut her hand and had stitches. We hope all is going well for her. I received a telephone call from Geraldine Zhanel thanking us for her Christmas sack and how much she is enjoying all the items. It was so good to hear from her. Geraldine sounded great and promised that when school is out, her daughter Paula would bring her to a meeting. How great! We haven’t seen her in a long time. President Dorothy announced that if anyone has not paid their 2012 dues to please do so as soon as possible. She thanked all for coming, for the wonderful food, the clean up, and wished all a happy Easter. She stated that the next meeting will be April 12 then she adjourned the meeting. The door prize was brought by Ann Clagett and won by President Dorothy—a beautiful pot and kalanchoe plant. Ann handed out the little gifts.

Other News Ginny Svehlak has already started dressing dolls for the St. John Church bazaar. Someone else said they have started, but I didn’t catch who. Congratulations to Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger on their 65th wedding anniversary in February. They went out to the Old Warsaw Restaurant. Eleanora Pelzel and her daughter went to Houma, Louisiana, to attend a birthday party for two of her greatgrandsons. They also stopped at some fabric stores. Eleanora’s daughter is also a quilter.

I just have to say a little bit about the Mollie B Polka Party. It was a big success as for people. They came from everywhere - California, Montana, Michigan, New York, and all between. Everything went well. The Mollie B people said it was one of the nicest

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth

Since St. Patrick’s Day and Easter were approaching, what better themes could we have had for our March meeting. The tables were decorated with lovely spring items, and the ladies brought out their Irish dress. Caroline O’Brien, one of our newest members, was our resident leprechaun. She looked beautiful with her green floral leis around her neck. Members and guests totaled 53 in attendance by my count. Prior to the meeting, Gloria Farek brought a quilt she had purchased at a garage sale. At the time she bought it, it apparently was unfinished. Evelyn Scaff helped her bind it I think, and it turned out beautiful. Gloria also brought bottles of barbecue sauce that her son had donated to the ladies. So everyone went home with a bottle of sauce from her. Thanks to Gloria for showing off her treasure and for sharing the “goodies” with us. The business meeting opened as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance and a sweet reading and prayer by Theretta Praslicka, our vice president. Lorinda Manasco brought family members Ashley Strauss, Aleesha Barrett, and Karen Barrett. Willie Mae’s daughter Jennifer and her greatgranddaughter Mattie were there, as was Mona Lee Hattendorf’s niece and my cousin, Doris Merlick Mobley. Oh

and yes, we can’t forget the Ellsworth’s red-headed granddaughter Cherish. She is just growing up too fast. We really enjoyed having everyone share in the activities of the day, and hope they can come again. Minutes were read and approved. The only reports of health issues that I heard about were that Mona Lee Hattendorf will be having another procedure on that blasted leg of hers March 20, and Garland Ellsworth had day surgery recently. He was there and doing just fine, according to him. Mary Ann Krivanek attended without her arm in a sling, and Catherine Ann Davis was there also doing much better. Pauline Morbitzer reviewed the finances, and the secretary encouraged members to please let one of the officers know if they have news to share with the group via the Vestnik. There was no unfinished or new business, but we will have some for the coming month. Yeah! Hostesses for the day were recognized—Lorinda Manasco, Hermina Cihacek, Betty Loyd, and Pauline Morbitzer. There was lots of delicious stuff to eat and our thanks to these ladies for their work in the kitchen. The birthday “girls” and “boy” this month were Willie Mae Becan (a wonderful 91 years young) and Joann Wilcox who was not 91. I can’t tell you her age because she might get me next time I see her! Others who had birthdays but were not present were Matthew Willenburg, Inez Krivanek, and Vera McKenzie. Willie Mae and Joann were serenaded, and their picture was taken for posterity. Happy birthday to all, and best wishes for a great year ahead. Joyce Tesar announced the March dance schedule and activities for the hall. The Tanglefoot Dance Club is having a St. Patrick’s dance with all the trimmings. Also for a more detailed schedule for Friday nights, please check the back of the Vestnik for lodge activities. Come dance with us; we would love to have you. Once again, there was an abundance of door prizes. Candles, an orchid (which I wanted but didn’t get), cute bunny, rabbit, and chicken potholders; Easter dish towels; and many more. I failed to write everything down so please forgive me if I missed listing something that was brought. Last, due to there being no business, the meeting was short. Theretta had to ad lib with stories that had been brought to her for her to read. She really needed a drink of water before she

was done and being new, she didn’t realize it was her duty to entertain us. Not really. The blessing for lunch was then given by Theretta, and everyone got ready for bingo. May God bless each of you always: Happy Easter! Fraternally, Joan Shropshire —SPJST—

Dear Readers, We have gotten so many great notes from our preservation response. All have been appreciated. One that has stood out was from Martin Narendorf in Houston:

“I am from Freyburg, Texas. At age 18, I served in World War II and am now 87. I am an American German, and my father immigrated in 1912— one hundred years ago. My wife and I belong to SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, and we have always enjoyed ourselves at the lodge. We love to dance the polka, but not anymore. I guess it’s the pains of 87 years. But, the Czech people are very good and great. I was in the Pacific on

the front line in World War II. Hitler was very bad for the world. Your people in Europe really had to suffer. I love Czech people . . . you are a great reason for giving.”

The Czech Heritage Museum staff would like to extend our gratitude to the members of the SPJST organization for your donations. The preservation of this building is of valuable importance in housing artifacts that remind us of the fears of oppression and of the good life we have struggled to enjoy. We take pride in your museum. Thank you for being a part of it. Fraternally, Don Mears Artistic Director —SPJST—

The completed evaluations were placed into a drawing for a chance to win an iPod speaker docking station. Congratulations to Assistant District Seven Youth Counselor/Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Leader Regina House on winning the iPod speaker docking station. Thank you for the positive feedback. We will be reading and considering each questionnaire in the coming days. We started out the program by honoring a very special lady—District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr. Sister Petr has dedicated 60 years of service to the SPJST Youth Program. What an accomplishment! We honored her with a corsage and a tiara. Later on in the evening, we presented a plaque honoring Sister Petr’s years of service.

During the day, Youth Leaders were treated to taco soup, fruit trays, and kolaches. Thank you to those youth leaders who brought kolaches in from all around our great state. Before eating the kolaches, we set up a Youth Achievement Day training session. The training session consisted of eight categories — Constructive Items, Food, Handicraft, Hobby Kits, Needlework, Pictorial Art, Photography, and Sewing. The youth leaders also played a couple of ice breaker games—Featherball and Avalanche. Many of our youth leaders wanted to take the featherball home with them so they could make more. Directions on making the featherball are located in my online newsletters that can be accessed in the youth section at www.spjst.org. We reviewed changes made to the 2012-2013 SPJST Youth Club Handbook and answered a number of questions. President Brian Vanicek and I pre-

Dear Vestnik Readers, Spring is in the air, and we have recently been blessed with much needed rain. To this end, I’m reminded what a great community we live in. In early February, we were hit with some damaging storms, we received some of this damage, but I am graetful that it was not worse. Our yard looked like a war zone — literally.

In the days and weeks to follow, we had family and friends who were there to help us out. The night of the storm, we had to move my show pigs to the Orsaks as the pigs’ home was destroyed. Luckily, all the pigs were okay. Thanks to Mr. Bill, Josef, Bradley, Aaron, and Dakota for helping us get them out safely. In the weeks to follow, friends and neighbors stopped by to lend us a helping hand with getting

If you do not have internet, you will still be able to call in from a phone to attend the meeting. I have more information in my newsletter about www.gotomeeting.com. I presented to our youth leaders the new changes that Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny made to the youth section of the SPJST website and our new online camp forms for our youth and chaperones. The majority of our youth leaders are using the site to download forms, and our members will be able to complete the camp applications online and submit the forms di-

rectly to me starting the first week of April. We ended the workshop at 5 p.m. to give the youth leaders some time to drive to Oscar Store for dinner and the banquet. For dinner, we had sirloin steak or grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Thank you to District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and Assistant District Three Youth Counselor Lynda Novak for making brownies for dessert. They were out of this world! After presenting the youth leaders their years of service pin and their 42 (i) allocation funds, we relaxed and listened to the Nolan Pick Band. Next year, I hope to see more of the youth leaders participate.

Youth Development Workshop On Saturday, February 25, we had our Youth Development Workshop at SPJST Home Office. There were 26 youth and 20 adults who attended the workshop. Thanks to President Brian Vanicek for reviewing the mission of the SPJST Youth Program and that it provides a well-rounded educational, patriotic, and social program for our youth and their parents. In support of this mission, Brian talked about ways to make the youth clubs more relevant to the lives of youth club members and the communities they serve. My Powerpoint presentation was about “Who am I?” I want our SPJST youth members to know how important they are to this Fraternal organization

During this presentation youth had the chance to get to know me. I shared photos and experiences from my childhood and let them know even though we are from different generations we all share a common bond, “SPJST.” After my presentation we had pizza, salad and cookies for lunch. After lunch, the group took a tour of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor inside the Home Office. The youth enjoyed looking at the artifacts and the Wall of Honor with photos of Czech war veterans. Youth leaders and par-

Dear Readers, On Saturday, January 7, 2012, Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club went to Buckner Home to help take down Christmas decorations. We undecorated the trees inside and took down the holiday decorations outside, too. We had the January meeting afterwards. On February 12, the youth club went to St. Joseph’s Residence. We always visit the residents around Valentine’s

Day. The youth performed a short program before handing out valentines and visiting. Everyone brought trial-sized lotions and shampoos for donation. We also brought flowers to be put on the altar. Important Notice: Vestnik Projects and Fourth Quarterly Merit Reports Due June 1 Youth leaders, please remember the Vestnik projects and fourth quarterly merit reports are due on June 1. If you mail them to the Home Office on or after June 15, this does not give Tammy enough time (one week) to get the data to the District Youth Counselors on who is eligible to attend SPJST camp and Youth Achievement Day.

2012 Leaders-In-Training Retreat Leaders-In-Training Retreat will be at SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm on June 7 to 9. This will give the LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills, new games, learning what their responsibilities are, having a motivational speaker and having some fun with your peers! LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year. Youth eligible to be a Leader-InTraining? LITs are active high school aged youth who have been approved by their Youth Leader and District Youth Counselor as responsible and mature enough to be a LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT Workshop after completing a LeadersIn-Training application. Forms are available from youth leaders and District Youth Counselors. The LIT form can be found in the youth section of the SPJST website at www.spjst.org. Join Hands Day — May 5 Our goal for 2012 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects and fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2012. The main thing — at this point — is committing to doing something. When coming up with ideas for your project try to do

something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. Again this year, the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day and online with Join Hands Day website following the event. Following confirmation from Join Hands Day Association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered their project online. To register your project, visit www.spjst.org and click the Join Hands Day link. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive There’s still time for youth club members to send in donations for this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Thanks to all of the youth and youth clubs who have contributed to

this wonderful project. All youth who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All youth who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit.

State YAD August 4 at the Temple Mayborn Center It looks like the hotel rooms will be in high demand in Temple again this year. A listing of blocked Temple motel rooms is available in the youth section of our website at www.spjst.org. Please make your reservations as soon as you can to make sure you get a room.

End of Summer Getaway! Good times await you at the Corpus Christi End of Summer Getaway. Start making your plans now to join us on Friday, August 10 to Sunday, August 12 for a fun-filled weekend. This year, we will be staying at the Emerald Beach Holiday Inn which is located right on the beach. There will

be a lot of activities for the whole family. Additional details will be presented in the Vestnik as they become available.

Online Youth Meeting GoToMeeting.com In May, we will use GoToMeeting.com for the monthly call-in meeting. It is scheduled for Monday, May 7 at 7 p.m. If the member is able to use a computer, you will be able to see my desktop and I will be able to share documents. Members will still be able to call into the meeting with the phone number provided. This information will change each time there is a scheduled meeting. On March 18, Lodge 87, Temple youth attended the District Two Spring Meeting. It was held in Beyersville. We all brought our decorated eggs. Our newest member Cort won first place for his egg. Wyatt brought home second place. I was so proud of them! Thank you to all the youth who participated in the egg competition. You all did an awesome job! First place for all in my opinion.

We all enjoyed munching on appetizers and snacks. Right before the meeting started, the youth were asked to go to the youth room to help stuff some Easter eggs. The kids really enjoyed this part. Once they were done, the LITs along with Christine Festa and Jennifer Davidson took the kids outside to play some games. Thanks to all the LITs who

Veselé Velikonoce!

In the years before 1989 when Czechoslovakia became a free country again, the religious connotations of Easter were suppressed under the communist regime. Nowadays, people are again aware of the religious origin of Easter; however, Easter in the Czech Republic is still a fun time. Many traditions are still observed and practiced, especially in villages, and different regions may have their own traditions. Czech Easter folk customs and celebrations represent the welcoming of spring - the start of new life in nature.

In the northern Moravian region, children finish school on Ugly Wednesday - Škaredá streda. The following day Green Thursday - Zelený ctvrtek - boys equip themselves with wooden rattles, called rehtacka. Each boy then forms a group and walks through the village, shaking their rattles vigorously so that the noise can be heard from afar. This, as tradition dictates, scares off Judas. This walk is repeated on Good Friday - Velký pátek - then once more on White Saturday - Bílá sobota. Progress is slowed by the boys stopping at every house and shaking their rattles until they receive a present!

Easter Sunday On Easter Sunday - Neděle velikonoční - the girls and women of the village paint eggs - kraslice. The color red and other bright colors symbolize health, joy, happiness, and new life that comes with the spring. As girls paint their Easter eggs, the boys prepare their Easter whips - pomlázka - for Easter Monday.

Pomlázka Pussywillow twigs are thought to bring health and youth to anyone who is symbolically whipped with them. A pomlázka - from pomladit or "make

VӖSTNÍK

younger" - is a braided whip made from pussywillow twigs. It has been used for centuries by men and boys on Easter Monday. The origin of the pomlázka tradition - pomlázka meaning both the whip and the tradition itself - dates back to pagan times. Its original purpose and symbolic meaning is to chase away illness and bad spirits, and bring health and youth for the rest of the year to everyone who is whipped with the young pussywillow twigs. In the past, pomlázka was not only used by boys to symbolically whip girls on the legs, but also by the farmer's wife to symbolically whip the livestock as well as everyone in the household including men and children.

Easter Monday Easter Monday - Pondělí velikonoční - or Whipping Monday, is a day off and is the day of the pomlázka. On Monday morning, the boys and men set off through the village with their pomlázka. They go from house to house and symbolically whip the girls. An Easter carol or rhyme, usually asking for an egg or two, would be recited by the male while whipping. The girl would then reward the boy with a painted egg or candy and tie a ribbon around his pomlázka. The males progress through the village, their bags filled up with eggs, and their pomlázkas adorned with more and more colorful ribbons. For older boys, the reward of decorated eggs and colorful ribbons has given way to the man being offered money and shots of plum brandy. So, by the time they arrive home, the men can be fairly happy! As if the whipping is not enough, a popular custom is to douse each other with water. This "Easter dousing" has a similar symbolic meaning as the pomlazka — to chase away illness and bad spirits. Easter still remains one of the most joyful and fun holidays on the Czech calendar. Happy Easter! Veselé Velikonoce!

TCGS to host Genealogy Picnic

Between the chill of winter and the long hot days of summer, the spring season offers fantastic picnic weather! Texas Czech Genealogical Society will host a “Czech Indoor Genealogy Picnic – Bugs ‘n All” on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas, 103 Presidential Corridor W, Caldwell, Texas. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. with registration and morning refreshments. At 9 a.m., the programs for the day will begin. Some of the program highlights will be (1) a presentation by Rev. James D. Hejl, who will speak about “The Influence of Faith on Czech Immigrants in Texas;” (2) a talk by TCGS First Vice President Patrick Janis, who will address “brick walls” with a presentation on how to work around them to find information about your ancestors; and (3) a musical presentation by the Beseda Dancers from Snook, Texas. A lunch of typical picnic fare – fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, pickles, rolls, cookies, and iced tea will be served at 12 noon. The winner of the $1,000 TCGS

scholarship will be announced, and he or she will give a 15 to 30 minute presentation on “The Importance of Knowing Family History.” Everyone is encouraged to bring his or her genealogy stories and discoveries to share in a “show-and-tell” atmosphere. Hearing how others have succeeded in finding information about their Czech ancestors is very motivating to those who have not reached that point in their research and who may be unsure of how to proceed. In the afternoon, the entire book room will be opened up and several TCGS members, who are knowledgeable in performing internet genealogy research, will have their laptops set up in order to help you with your Czech genealogy research online. Other genealogists will be available to help with research in the hundreds of research books, maps, and other materials that will be set out for all attendees’ use. So bring your “brick walls” and let TCGS members help you over the hurdles to facilitate the search for your ancestors. Door prize winners and silent auction winners will be announced shortly before adjournment at 4 p.m. Early registration is $25 for members of TCGS, postmarked on/before April 12. Early registration for nonmembers, postmarked before April 12 is $35. Late registration for TCGS members, postmarked after April 12 is $30. Late registration for non-members postmarked after April 12 is $40. Registration at the door for all attendees will be $45. To register for this event, send your check, payable to TCGS, with the name of each person registering, mailing address, telephone number, and email address to Bennie Stasny, 8402 Shenandoah Drive, Austin, Texas 78753. For further information, email blstasny@aol.com or call (512) 4976007. To become a member of TCGS, contact Merlene Bravenec at bravema@sbcglobal.net. Yearly dues are $20 per person. Sounds of Lidice— an intense experience

Sunday, June 10, 2012 is the 70th anniversary of the Lidice (in the Czech Republic) destruction. To commemorate one of the worst tragedies of Czech history, a unique project has been created that will allow listening to the old town sounds and to imagine its life. The town of Lidice was completely destroyed by the Nazis in 1942. Thanks to a particular audio work, Lidice will revive when visitors walk through the empty land where the town was and listen to the sounds and conversations of its people just before the Nazis arrived. Tereza Semotamova, the author, imagined walking through the town and recreated sounds of a former lake, of children playing, of conversations of the few survivors of Lidice. These scenes will be offered to visitors so they can remember Lidice of 70 years ago. They will receive audio-phones and an intelligent telephone with GPS included. Walking through the valley of Lidice, the phone will choose the texts depending on the visitors position. Each visitor will be able to imagine the Mill, the Church, the Tavern or the School and listen to conversations and stories about this town as if the former inhabitants were next to them. The project is using state of the art technology for a very intense experience. The 65 texts in Czech and German languages will be presented for the first time June 9 just before the 70th anniversary of Lidice’s devastation. TCGS to produce Czech Veteran DVD

Under the leadership of its Visionary Team, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society is extremely delighted to announce another project that will honor our Czech Veterans around the world. While the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor, displayed at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, is impressive, and indeed does exactly what was envisioned, members of the Visionary Team realized that a number of people will not have an opportunity to view it. Many have expressed the desire to be able to show their children, grandchildren, and relatives around the world the photos of those brave Czech Veterans who have served to keep our nation free. With this in mind, TCGS is taking steps to create a special DVD, which will feature patriotic music and photos of our veterans. This DVD will allow viewing from a laptop, personal computer, or television. Pictured is an example of the way your Czech Veteran will appear on the DVD. While the information is condensed, it will bring honor to each veteran represented on the DVD, and it will allow us another means of saying thank you.

bration “This Parade’s For You” on November 9 and 10 will receive a free copy of the DVD. So please send the information on your Czech Veterans to Charlene Hurta, 1231 CR 201A, Angleton, 77515 or email to Texas cmhurta@earthlink.net. The submission deadline is September 13, 2012. Czech book now available

The new book The Czech and Slovak Legion in Siberia, 1917-1922 by Joan McGuire Mohr was released in M a r c h 2012. During World War I and the Russian Revolution, a specialized battalion of e t h n i c Czech and Slovak former prison-

ers of war—the Legion—became a pawn in an international game of power and deceit. Fighting with hopes of founding a nation, the Legion’s heartbreaking detour through Siberia became one of the greatest human interest stories of the war and was chronicled weekly in the New York Times and New York Herald. During their harrowing journey through Siberia, legionnaires grudgingly became protectors of the Russian Treasury and of the Trans-Siberian Railroad while accidentally precipitating the murder of the Russian Royal family. Stripped of their weapons and betrayed by their former allies, over half of the legionnaires lost their lives. For political purposes, tales of the Legion’s odyssey have been buried or expunged. This revealing volume offers a thorough account of a once hidden yet epic journey, shedding light on a fascinating but forgotten facet of the first world war. Joan McGuire Mohr has served as a contributing historian at the Czech and Slovak National Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and lectured at the Iparmu˝veszeti Muzeum (Museum of Applied Arts) in Budapest, Hungary. She leads lecture tours into Hungary and Transylvania. The Czech and Slovak Legion in Siberia, 1917-1922 includes 262 pages arranged into 14 chapters. It also includes 52 photos, notes, bibli-

CEFT Director expresses thanks for Stříbrnanka tour

Dear Friends, I am writing to thank each of you for your role in making Stříbrnanka’s first visit to Texas such a resounding success and to express our deepest gratitude to those of you who took precious time from your busy schedules to orchestrate and execute the countless tasks that must be attended to when hosting and catering a lovely reception for foreign guests. We appreciate the warmth of your welcome, your gracious hospitality, and the genuine rapport that quickly developed between members of the band and their delighted audiences at every step on their tour. Neither time nor space will permit me to acknowledge individually the scores of loyal supporters who worked so hard to make each occasion so special, but I would be remiss if I failed to recognize and express our appreciation to the following individuals and their colleagues who, without exception, went the extra mile.

- David Slovak, President of Sokol Karel Havlíček Borovsky, his wife Michelle, their families, and friends at Sokol Ennis. - Dan Pokluda, Entertainment Chairman of the Knights of Columbus Hall, West, his wife Jeanette, and their colleagues.

- Charlene Hurta, President of Texas Czech Genealogical Society, and her dedicated colleagues who helped shoulder the load.

- Alice Kubaček, President of the Austin Czech Historical Association, Master Chef Pavla Adamik van Bibber and James van Bibber. - Effie Rosene, Chairman and CEO of the Czech Center Museum Houston, and Bill Rosene, Vice President of Administration and Secretary.

- Melanie Zavodny, Editor of the Vestnik, and her colleague Katherine Morris, for their outstanding job in keeping their readers informed. - Johnnie Krajča, Polka DJ for KBEC Radio, Waxahachie, for keeping his listening audience informed.

- Dr. Thomas Sovik, Professor of Music and Director of Central European Studies and Exchanges, a fellow našínec, whose work in collaboration with the Janáček Academy of Music in Brno and the College of Music at UNT, laid the foundation for CEFT’s work at UNT.

- Dr. James Scott, Dean of the College of Music, for his generosity and enthusiastic support of CEFT’s work at UNT.

We have been extremely fortunate in our association with the University of North Texas. We enjoy a fine rapport with Dean Scott and his colleagues who welcome CEFT’s suggestions and remain respectful of CEFT’s mission and goals. We are pleased as well, by the enthusiasm with which the program has been embraced by the community at large and by the faculty, students, and staff at the largest and one of the most prestigious schools of music in the nation. CEFT’s work at UNT has opened doors for many that otherwise would have remained closed and will continue to enable students and faculty members alike to explore, for generations to come, the rich cultural heritage of the Czech people. CEFT’s

outreach programs at that venerable institution are designed to give Czechs and non-Czechs alike the rare opportunity to explore firsthand how deeply rooted in the Czech psyche are the traditions from the distant past and to learn just how little those traditions have changed. Czechs have long been noted for the extraordinary number of musicians their nation has nurtured and for the beauty and diversity of their music. This love of Czech music was carefully nurtured by early Czech and Moravian immigrants who recognized and valued its worth. Czech music, along with the Czech language, became the glue that bound CzechAmerican communities together. This was true in the 19th and 20th centuries and remains true to this day. It’s difficult for young people today, who are being bombarded every waking moment by entertainment opportunities of every description, to understand just how much Czech music meant – and still means – to those of us who grew up in rural communities in the early and middle decades of the 20th century. The Czech dances on Saturday night or Sunday afternoon in the local lodges across the state were our chief source of entertainment outside of church and school, and in many instances, were our sole source of entertainment. Czech music brought an element of old-world dignity into our workaday lives. This was an era when children assumed – or were assigned – responsibilities far beyond their tender years. It was not unusual to find children, too young to go to school, who were already spending their days helping with barnyard chores, housekeeping

duties, learning to bake bread and koláče, minding younger siblings, and so forth. We worked alongside our elders, and we worked hard, but we never felt deprived nor put upon. We delighted, in fact, in our many accomplishments and took great pride in our Czech heritage. Our Czech roots kept us grounded, and provided stability and the firm foundation upon which we built our lives. For fun, we learned to play musical instruments and we learned to dance. We played, sang, and danced with our friends and with our elders to the hauntingly beautiful old-world arrangements our forefathers brought with them from their homes in the land they loved and had left behind. As first and second generation Americans, we have always felt a keen appreciation of our Czech cultural heritage. It was precisely this sense of camaraderie that made Stříbrnanka’s recent tour so special. The sheer joy of sharing those magical moments with like-minded individuals in audiences across the state was an exhilarating experience that will not be forgotten anytime soon. Those were nostalgic moments, as well, filled with palpable memories of our immigrant parents and grandparents and a keen awareness of the key role music had played in anchoring lives that had been set adrift the moment the decision to emigrate had been made. Tentative plans are already being discussed to bring Stříbrnanka back in the year 2014. Much will depend on our finding the necessary funding. We would be most grateful for your support. The students and individuals

whose lives are touched by your generosity will be too. Every dollar of your tax-deductible donation will go directly to the CEFT-Bezdek endowment at UNT and will remain there in perpetuity. CEFT is a volunteer organization. There are no administrative costs. Please send your checks to: Bezdek Endowment Czech Educational Foundation of Texas Anton Pustejovsky, Treasurer PO Box 4136 Sargent, Texas 77404-4136

No gift is too large or too small. All are appreciated, and all will be acknowledged in a commemorative booklet at the conclusion of the campaign. Contributions of $1,000-plus will be recognized on a handsome bronze plaque that will be placed alongside the CEFT-Kostohryz plaque on a prominent wall in the splendid Murchison Performing Arts Center on the UNT campus. (See photo above.) You will receive as well a DVD of UNT’s award-winning 2010 production of Bedrich Smetana’s delightful comic opera, Prodaná nevěsta, The Bartered Bride, sung in Czech by a student cast and fully staged by the UNT Opera and Symphony Orchestra. Organizations, families, and friends might consider pooling their resources in order to get the name of their organization, family name, or the name of a loved one on the plaque. I know that sounds like a lot of money. It is a lot of money. Personally speaking, I’d be the first to admit that the thought of writing a check to a charitable organization can give one

pause. There are always concerns about how wisely one’s money will be used. But in truth, Joe and I have never missed, nor do we regret, the money we’ve given to the various Czech organization through the years. Our donations were, without exception, sound investments in the celebration of our cultural heritage that have enriched our lives, and the lives of countless others, beyond measure. Look around you at the remarkable work being done by dedicated volunteers in the fraternal lodges, historical and genealogical societies across the state, and in the splendid museums and cultural centers that have sprung from the ground in the last decade or so. Built as monuments in celebration of our cultural heritage, they stand as a tribute to the tenacity of the Czech people and of their capacity for hard work. Even more to their credit, the individuals who shouldered the greatest responsibility for turning their vision into bricks and mortar, more often than not, graciously volunteered their time, talents, and tools. Thank you for your kind attention and careful consideration. We hope to hear from you soon. We’re interested in your ideas and welcome your suggestions and active participation in CEFT’s work of promoting the study and appreciation of the language, music, and culture of the Czech people at institutions of higher learning across the state.
