Bloomin’ Temple Car Show On Saturday, April 21, SPJST will sponsor the car show at this year’s Seventh Annual Bloomin’ Temple Festival. The festival will be held in downtown Temple and will include a Czech Heritage Celebration with folklife demonstrations, courtesy of the Czech Heritage Museum. Accordion Cowboy Chris Rybak will provide entertainment. Other activities include a kolache eating contest at 12 noon with adult and kids’ divisions and a Czech spelling bee at 1 p.m. The car show features 35 classes of vehicles. More than 100 trophies will be awarded. To enter a vehicle, visit www.spjst.org or call the Home Office (800) 727-7578. Festival admission is $5 (kids ages 12 and under are admitted free of charge). Saturday evening entertainment is by David Lee Murphy, Deryl Dodd, and Kevin Fowler.

The Mountain Story “A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, his son falls, hurts himself and screams: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!” To his surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!” Curious, he yells: “Who are you?” He receives the answer: “Who are you?” Then he screams to the mountain: “I admire you!” The voice answers: “I admire you!” Angered at the response, he screams: “Coward!” He receives the answer: “Coward!” He looks to his father and asks: “What’s going on?” The father smiles and says: “My son, pay attention.” Again the man screams: “You are a champion!” The voice answers: “You are a champion!” The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father explains: “People call this echo, but really this is life. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life; Life will give you back everything you have given to it. Your life is not a coincidence, it’s a reflection of you! —Author Unknown Wanted: World War II Jeep Texas Czech Genealogical Society is looking for a World War II Jeep for its Czech Military Museum. The body of the Jeep is all that is needed. No engine, transmission, etc. are necessary. If you know of a World War II Jeep, please contact TCGS President Charlene Hurta (979) 849-0348. —SPJST—

Age 96 member shares success stories

I am an accomplished cake and pie baker. I have baked and given away a whole slew of pies because people practically stand in line to get them. When people do me a favor, I repay them with a pie. That’s why I say I pay my debts with pies. The favorites are apple and dewberry when in season. I pick the wild dewberries myself which is a lot of work. I have given away as many as 36 pies. Since I’m diabetic, I can’t even taste my pies much less eat them. It’s not just the filling that people like so well, but the crust that people like so well. I got the recipe for it from the Ladies Home Journal in about 1933 when Ann Batchelder was food editor. I liked it so well, I have never bought a pie crust in my life. I can share it with you so here goes. Pie Crust Recipe

2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup Crisco 1 cup ice cubes in water

Sift flour and salt three times. Cut in Crisco and work it until like coarse meal. Start adding water by teaspoonsful, mixing with a fork. That sounds slow and it’s meant to be until the flour mixture becomes of dough consistency. (That will use up most of the ice water). Cover securely, and store in refrigerator for use the next day. Yield is enough dough for 2 double-crust pies. Also, I use my fingers to work in Crisco so be sure to wash hands beforehand.

I bake cakes, too, and my son-inlaw Peter’s favorite is a banana cake. I always bake him one for his birthday which he sometimes keeps for their New Year’s Eve party. A friend once came by the next morning wanting a piece of leftover cake. It’s that good. My secret is I never use a mixer, but hand mix to fold, not stir the batter. I also forgot to mention that I am the treasurer of Corinth Cemetery Board since 1972; a post I took over from my father with less than $100 in the bank and the cemetery all grown in weeds. I asked my father why the cemetery wasn’t mowed, and he said it was because there was no money. That wasn’t going to stop me because my

thinking was if I start mowing, people will start donating. And sure enough, they did. It was my late friend Ed Laywell, who first gave me the idea to work toward a trust fund. He was with the Walker’s Creek Cemetery, and they had one. To have a tax-free trust fund, we had to first become an association. After a stormy meeting, we became an association, but still had to work to have a trust fund. That happened finally after A.W. Zajicek, Jr. became a member of the board and with the $43,000 which I managed to accumulate during high interest rates. That was in 1997 and today, it’s over $93,000. Today, we are a group of seven dedicated members. Since a part of the cemetery was once a part of my farm, when I die, all they’ll have to do is throw me over the fence. Lodge 255, Katy member: still running for SL Vice President

Dear Editor, With all the announcements of candidates dropping out of the running for the Supreme Lodge Vice President’s position, I would like to reiterate that I will still be running for the position. I am still officially running for the Supreme Lodge Vice President’s position I would like to reintroduce myself. My name is Delisle Doherty. I am currently the State F i e l d Representative for Districts One and Five. I am married and have two children (ages 22 and 25) and one beautiful granddaughter. Prior to owning my own businesses, I worked for American General and earned myself a position on the President’s Club. I owned four cellular phone locations along with 30 sub dealers. We helped to develop marketing strategies and grow the locations to be successful selling our products. We were also a service center for Motorola. In 2003, I sold my shares to my business partner and started CLC Marketing/NBD Graphics, a printing and marketing company. I consult with small to medium businesses to form marketing strategies and implement them. I also trained employees in salesmanship and networking. This past year, I gave the business to my son to concentrate on SPJST. In 2007, I started the Houston Christian Chamber of Commerce, an organization designed to help Christian business owners g r o w their busin e s s through networking and community events. Last year, the name was changed to The Christian Business Fellowship Association (see www.thecbfa.com) to allow us to expand beyond the Houston market. It currently is a community organization, which not only helps business organization, but also individuals and charities. During this same time, I served as the President of the National Space and Technology Association. I ran a children’s program for my

VӖSTNÍK

church for 10 years and attended nine missions trips with the youth over that same period. I am active with several local charities. Currently, I speak to groups of business owners from 10 to 300 at a time on “the 6 Keys to Successful Networking,” the “Hidden Value of Networking,” and “Smart Marketing.” I am also a strategic partner with the Texas High Achievers. I currently write a weekly article for the Vestnik to help members learn about different topics and a weekly newsletter to my district agents to help them improve their salesmanship. As Vice President, I will bring experience in the five main areas necessary to help SPJST grow.

• Operations—My many years as a business owner gives me the experience to help manage the day-to-day operations of this organization. I will be able to control costs and increase our bottom line. • Marketing—As the owner of a marketing company and a consultant, I can implement marketing strategies that will help get the SPJST name out to the public. I can update our materials to reflect the interest and attractiveness of the fraternal aspect of our organization, those helping to grow the lodges. • Training—My training and public speaking experience will help us to bring in a more professional insurance sales team. This team will be trained to be a fraternal insurance team, not just insurance. We can change the culture to expect agents to be active with the lodges as part of their job, understanding the fraternal aspects and the Czech heritage. With us becoming more of a fraternal insurance agency, the lodges will have the opportunity to grow and reestablish themselves in the community. As a strong advocate to youth, I can help reestablish youth programs by training the agents to emphasize the importance of active youth when they sell the insurance. • Technology—My technology background and knowledge will allow us to upgrade our software and communications to allow easier access to information necessary to grow SPJST and the lodges. This will increase our efficiency and response time while cutting costs. • Fraternalism—With my experience working with the community and running youth programs, I understand and can instill the importance of the fraternal aspects to the agent program and its Czech heritage. This will ultimately allow the smaller lodges to have the opportunity to grow and become active

again, thus embracing the community while preserving the Czech heritage.

I would love the opportunity to speak to each lodge and answer any questions you may have on my qualifications. Feel free to contact me (832) 232-2049, and I will make arrangements to speak to you. Below is a summary of my personal activities: Currently write an article for the Vestnik every week. Current Fraternal Activities Coordinator and Secretary of SPJST Lodge, 255 Katy. President of Christian Business Fellowship Association. Owned a wireless communication business and Motorola repair center. Owned printing and marketing company, which included business consulting, before I passed it to my son (still operating today). Public speaker.

Member of the Presidents Club with American General. Past President of the National Space and Technology Association. Chairman of the Board of Outreach for Memorial Lutheran Church for 3 years. 2-time President of West Memorial BNI (Business Network International). Helped run youth programs for 10 years and attended 9 mission trips. Strategic Partner with Texas High Achievers. Climbed to Mount Everest Base Camp with my son for a local charity. Rode MS 150 (bicycle ride from Houston to Austin) for 10 years in a row for Multiple Sclerosis Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Publisher, Corel Draw, and MS Office and numerous other accounting and illustration programs. Donnie Victorick announces candidacy for District One Director

District One Members and Delegates, The past four years have been an exciting adventure in regards to the progress SPJST has made. We have seen an increase in our surplus averaging nearly $1 million dollars annually and a substantial increase in our assets as well as a drastic increase in the quality of our investment portfolio. In addition, our overall insurance premium income has shown a steady increase and is at its highest since 1995 despite the fact that our sales have suffered in quantity but has tremendously improved in quality. These things have come about because of a Supreme Lodge which is working diligently to improve the overall performance of our fraternal organization. I am thankful to be a part of this group and am asking for your continued support to reelect me for another term as your Director. I have enjoyed visiting your lodges and with you individually and always stand ready to lend a helping hand to any of you in need of trying to make SPJST better today than it was yesterday and even better tomorrow than it is today. Working together, we can accomplish this mission. I have worked diligently to keep you informed of the progress, as well as setbacks, of our Society and will continue to do so. I will work very hard as your director to continually represent you and make decisions in the best interest of SPJST taking into consideration business best practices and not basing them on personalities. This is a great

I look forward to seeing you and visiting with our delegates and ask once again that you continue to support me in doing something I love doing, which is serving you and a fraternal organization which stands for its members to preserve the Czech heritage. District Three Presents Fall Meeting Minutes

VӖSTNÍK

Lodge 6, Cottonwood • October 23, 2011

The meeting was called to order by President Gordon Hubenak at 11:05 a.m. Flag bearers were called to the floor to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST Motto. Brother Milton Peterson, Lodge 6, Cottonwood President, welcomed all the visitors. Recognition of visitors by Brother Selby Holder: Brother Brian Vanicek from the Home Office. Motion was made by Sister Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth to approve the minutes from the spring meeting as published in the Vestnik, seconded by Gordon Hubenak. No discussion. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report Treasurer’s report was presented by Sister Mary Steinman: Balance Deposits Expenses TOTAL

$8,243.91 $3,500.00 $2,340.73 $9,403.18

Motion was made by Sister Cheryl Petr to accept the treasurer’s report; second by Brother George Pauling. Motion passed.

Supreme Lodge Report Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek gave his report. He noted a decline in certificates from the previous year of just over 20 percent. Production figures decreased, income increased over 2010 totals for same nine-month period. This reflects an overall higher quality of sales versus quantity. Investment income is up slightly, and surplus has increased. Fraternally, fifty-six $1,000 scholarships were awarded. SPJST continues to be leader in the Fraternal Alliance of Texas. A total of $103,000 has been raised for the Fort Hood Memorial project; work has started on the bronzes to be featured in the memorial pavilion. A major fundraiser—a Johnny Lee concert—is coming up. Two free tickets were extended and given to Sister Debbie Galler from Lodge 6, Cottonwood. An SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC)/Czech Heritage Museum benefit is coming in the spring. SPJST and co-sponsor RVOS will both promote this event with posters. Watch for activities in the Vestnik.

District Three Report District Three Director Johnnie Krizan presented his report. He noted the four-year convention coming up the second week in June 2012. Delegates representing all SPJST lodges will meet for three days in Killeen. District Three has 6,881 adult members which qualifies for 60 delegates. He expressed a need to sustain membership from within to do what we promote and foster; membership down and premiums up; gain in assets; continue to build surplus; calls for prudence to cut expenses to increase income; He expressed concern over the 501(c)(3) spinoff entities—the rest homes, the museum, and the ENC. Members will decide at the convention how much donations to give. He points out balancing decision members will face of choosing to help one society over another. In the 2004 Convention Special Structure Committee Report, includes a proposal to nominate off floor which is not most competent means; Special Structure Committee published a report two to three weeks ago in the Vestnik which consisted of a total rewrite of the by-laws. This report has to be presented to the By-Law Committee 60 days before the convention. Brother Johnnie concluded his report stating he enjoys serving as District Three Director, has the qualifications, and is available to serve another year. Brother George Pauling asked Brother Johnnie Krizan to confirm the number of delegates for Lodge 66, Waco. Brother Johnnie Krizan confirmed that Lodge 66 qualified for 11 delegates.

By-Law Committee Report By-Law Committee report was by Brother Al Kercho and read by Sister Mary Steinman. The By-Law Committee held a meeting on Friday, September 16, 2011. The By-Law Committee urges members and potential delegates to study the voluminous recommendations of the Special Structure Committee that were published in the September 28 edition of the Vestnik. In particular, pages five to 14 concerns recommendations for the by-laws and pages 14 to 21 are recommendations for an operations manual for SPJST. Some recommendations are without merit. Members and potential delegates will be able to make recommendations for any changes prior to the June 2012 convention.

Snook Honors Former Bluejays for 90 Consecutive Victories

It is a record so astounding that it looks like a misprint. Ninety in a row? Surely not. But it is true. Snook High School’s basketball team achieved that feat from December 12, 1964, through November 2, 1966, under head coach Jimmy Horn, and the Bluejays won their first two state championships during that run in 1965 and 1966. On Friday, January 27, during halftime of the Bluejays game against Normangee, team members and coach Horn will be recognized on the 45th anniversary of that last title. It will be a memorable night for many with long memories, and a number of former players are expected to attend. Some of those still around will likely include Frankie See, Clarence Junek, Tommy, Jimmy and Daniel Junek, Ervin See, Rodney Giesenschlag, Larry Kovar and Donnie Victorick. Other players included Joe Adamek, Michael Dalchau, Calvin Gerke, Jimmy Janac, Glenn Kovar, Cedric Nix, Frank Orsak, Tommy Rosier, Melvin See, Milton Skrabanek, Billy and Edward Vajdak, and Cirildo Ybarra The story is noteworthy on many fronts. After a 51-39 loss to Houston Jones on December 12, 1964, the Bluejays reeled off 26 more wins in their first state championship run, finishing 50-1 for the 64-65 season. In 1965-66, Snook went 52-0, extending the streak to 78. It lasted until a 53-50 loss to A&M Consolidated on November 26, 1966. Even so, that Bluejay team finished 45-5. Horn would win another state title in 1969 and take five Snook teams to the state tournament in his nine seasons. His brother Don Horn succeeded him, taking the Bluejays to six more

state tourney appearances and winning in 1978 and 1979. The cycle continued as Victorick, one of Jimmy Horn’s players on the 1965 and 1966 teams, took over — winning five more consecutive state titles. That added up to seven consecutive state titles — feats that brought Snook state and national records. But it all began with Jimmy Horn and a very good system that stressed a strong work ethic, discipline, and defense, defense, defense. It was a lesson that carried over to Victorick as a player and as a coach. “That was just a great group of individuals. They were dedicated, hard working guys, and they played so well as a team. They were difficult to beat,” Victorick said. Victorick said team members also grew as people under Horn’s leadership, and he gives his coach credit. “He was a strict disciplinarian. He knew the game extremely well and broke down every angle of it you could think of,” he said. “You knew

he was telling you the right thing to do to be a winner.” Horn feels the same way about his players. “They were extremely hard workers. Whatever you asked them to do they did,” Horn recalled. “And they played awfully good defense. They just didn’t believe in letting the other team score. A man just can’t score without the ball.” Horn said his teams were not that tall but had excellent quickness and speed. And the team concept was vital. He still recalls the unselfish play of Larry Kovar, who set the record for most assist at the state tournament. Gerke also held a record for most points scored at a state tournament. Gerke was also a great defensive player, and Ervin See was the best outside defender. “You just couldn’t get by him,” Horn recalled. Horn also remembered at one time having three players all under 6 feet who could dunk the ball. There was

that kind of athleticism. And some special chemistry. The scores during the streak indicate the Bluejays got into a special rhythm and just kept it going. There were some noteworthy blowouts — even in big games. In the 65 playoff run, there was an 89-39 win over Meadow for their 25th in a row. Then Deweyville fell 48-44 in the final game. On the Friday, October 15, 1965, season opener, the Bluejays blasted Richards 75-17. The next day, they defeated Waelder 79-29 and the following Tuesday defeated Anderson 72-27. Snook played schools of all sizes, always won — and usually embarrassed the competition. Skills mattered, but Horn believes there were also intangible factors. “They just wanted to win. If you have the desire, that is the main thing,” he said.

Robocalls to residential and wireless phones by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

To help traditional landline and wireless telephone customers avoid prerecorded commercial telemarketing calls, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently approved changes to its telemarketing rules. Unwanted autodialed calls, which are often referred to as robocalls, intrude upon recipients’ personal time and – in the case of calls to wireless phones – waste their minutes. Under the FCC’s new rules, solicitors must get the consumer’s written authorization in advance before robocalling that consumer. The written consent may be obtained through electronic means such as a website form. The FCC’s rule change also eliminates the “established business relationship” exemption. Under the old policy, the FCC allowed solicitors to robocall individuals with whom the soliciting company had previously conducted business. The new FCC rule requires written consent for all telemarketing robocalls – regardless of whether the company previously did business with the consumer. The FCC’s rule change also requires solicitors to give consenting call recipients an opportunity to change their mind and withdraw their written consent. Under the new rules, every robocall must include an automated, interactive opt-out mechanism that enables a recipient to revoke consent and instruct the solicitor to stop calling by pressing just a few keys during the call. The solicitor must automatically add the consumer to its do-not-call list and immediately disconnect the call. The new rules also strictly limit the number of abandoned or “dead-air” calls that solicitors make within their robocalling campaigns. “Dead-air” calls refer to calls in which a recipient hears only a dial tone or dead air because a telemarketer has abandoned the call. The FCC did not change the federal rules governing telephone calls that deliver purely informational recorded messages. In other words, calls that merely inform consumers are treated differently than calls that attempt to sell a product or service. For example, informational robocalls include automated messages updating consumers about airline flights or school closures.

Other types of authorized robocalls include calls from financial institutions, political candidates, telephone carriers and most charitable organizations. Similarly, the new rules do not apply to messages about recipients’ health care. The FCC’s new rules also exempt debt collection calls as long as the caller is not trying to sell something. Texans who receive unwanted prerecorded telemarketing calls should file a complaint with the FCC at www.fcc.gov/complaints or by calling (888) 225-5322. Recipients may also file a complaint with the Office of the Attorney General online at www.tex-

asattorneygeneral.gov or by calling (800) 252-8011. The FCC’s new rules come as the Texas Attorney General’s Office resolves enforcement actions against three telemarketing firms that participated in an unlawful scheme to sell car warranty service contracts. According to state investigators, the defendants’ unlawful telephone solicitation scheme violated multiple state and federal telemarketing laws. In addition to falsely marketing service contracts as extended warranties, the telemarketing companies used falsified telephone numbers to hide their identities. As a result, recipients’ caller identifi-

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Friday before spring break, my family, Grandpa, Grandma, and Mima and PawPaw went to see Mollie B at the Sokol. I took a picture with Mollie B! Then the very next day, which was Saturday, my family went to the Grand

2011 - 2012 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance

Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the first and second quarters (June 2011 to February 2012). This is total merit points for the 2011-2012 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest. The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended during the June 2011 to February 2012 youth year. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System? Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012

Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior

Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Youth Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation. Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Youth Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest. The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Youth Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest. Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values. An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet. When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Youth Director prior to the contest conclusion. Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards * First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division.*

Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.* Junior and Teen Point Awards* First Place $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 Fourth Place - $15 Fifth Place $10

What is an Active Youth Member? A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten. To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Učme se Česky Let us Study Czech Lekce Třínáctá Lesson 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation

In this lesson, we will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable: PRÁ-ce, SKÁ-kat, ŠKO-la.

2. In the case of three or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the third syllable: PRÁ-co-VÁti, VZDĚ-la-VÁ-ti, zA-palo-VÁ-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po válce (poválce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant — v, z, s, k, — it must be joined in a single sound with the word following k vám kvám — not ke vám: V Novém Yorku (not ve Novém Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented: VE středu, KE mně, SE mnou, ZE školy.

6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vídni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE země. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech: (Anna, cenný). A double vv or double kk are no pronounceable. However, in a word like nej-

jemnější, the two j’s are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to stress long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech—its “musicalness”), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above three languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather “flat” and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it rather staccato character.

Examples: ČES ko slo ven ská RE pub li ka. Máte dnes MNO ho PRÁce?

POT-kal jste pana DOKtora?

A-no, pot-ká-vám ho VEL-mi ČASto.

10. Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you’re not sure which syllable is to be accented, don’t accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one. Don’t worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along. .

Lépe zpívati, nežli klívati. Nadávat ti pumůže ledakdo. Kde kázeň, tu strach a bázeň. Na slunce teplo, u matky dobro. Jenom hloupý člověk ví všecko. Sliby

A člověk takový může mnoho dobrého působiti, i jest příkladem, jenž lásku k pravdě, pevnost mysli, věrnost a důvěru lidí k lidem kolem sebe rozšiřuje. —SPJST—

News from Czech Center Houston Museum

Bohemian Hall On March 22, 2012, historical Bohemian Hall in New York City hosted the Living Legacy Kubik Art Foundation established for the legendary Czech born artist Kamil Kubik deceased August 2011. Mr. Kubik’s original art exhibition was a major component of the Czech Center Museum Houston’s month-long grand opening ceremonies in mid-February through mid-March in 2005. Our museum holds the only permanent collection in the United States of his beautiful prolific impressionist art work. The Czech Center Museum Houston remembers Kamil Kubik, artist to presidents, royalty, and art patrons of all ages. We showcase the art on your docent tour at the CCMH. Effie Rosene was privileged to speak at the opening ceremony recounting the largesse of Mr. Kubik and his contribution of his work to the CCMH and the world. At the reception following, we met many prominent personages among them Slovak Ambassador Peter Burian and his wife; Kamil Kubik’s lifelong dear friend Anna Kriz; Dr. Alex Cech, personally instrumental in saving Bohemian Hall from extinction reversing an earlier 1980s sale; Viera Pecha, organizer of the event; Johanna, wife of Kamil Kubik; George and Milly Suchanek, owners of Zlata Praha restaurant in Astoria where we enjoyed incredibly delicious Czech cuisine and hospitality; and Henry Kallan, owner Hotel Elysee and three other charming New York boutique hotels – the Casablanca, Library, and Giraffe. The Bohemian National Hall has been an important center for Czech and Slovak culture in New York City since 1896. The five-story building designed by William C. Frohne in neoRenaissance Palazzo style is a rare survivor of the many social halls built in the 19th century for New York City’s immigrant ethnic communities. It has served as a focal point for its community, offering ethnic food, Czech language and history classes as well as space for its large community to meet and hold various events. Today, the Bohemian National Hall represents a significant reminder of the major working-class ethnic enclave that once flourished in Yorkville and stands as a monument to an im-

portant aspect of the history of immigrants in New York City and the United States. It also houses a Dvorak Museum curated by Majda Kallab. In 2001, ownership of the Bohemian National Hall was transferred from the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association (BBLA) to the Czech Republic. To emphasize the building’s link with the Czech Republic, it now shares its premises with the Consulate General and the Czech Center. The BBLA occupies the entire third floor. After the grand reopening in October 2008, the Bohemian National Hall has truly become a common space not only for presenting Czech culture, trade, and tourism in the United States but also for organizing a variety of events outside the Czech community. Zlata Praha catered a United Nations group there on Friday, March 23. The beautiful ballroom/theater holds 300plus people, retains its original glory and, when combined with the other modern multifunctional rooms in the Hall, provides a unique setting and atmosphere for events. When you visit, don’t miss the Hospoda (restaurant and pub) next door where through a glass floor you see the huge supply of beers on tap and wine archives. Another bonus was a wonderful visit with granddaughter Sarah Pierce, Houstonian, University of Texas, Austin graduate, and yes, now a bonafide New Yorker!
