Need a gif t for Mother ’s Day?
SPJST Cookbooks make great Mother’s Day gifts! We received a
call from Annice Guenther of Lodge 202, Jourdanton. She stated that the desired length to cut casings in the recipe “Roy’s Country Sausage (German Style)” on page 259 of SPJST Tasty Traditions Cookbook should be 21 inches. Thanks to Annice for calling in and for submitting the recipe. The cookbook includes 700 pages filled cover to cover with more than 1,400 recipes. It is available for only $15 (or $18 with shipping). You will find a large variety of recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and in-between meals, too! The cookbook also makes a great graduation, wedding, anniversary, or birthday gift. Order one or more today using the order form on the back page of this week’s Vestnik. You can also order from our website at www.spjst.org. Cookbooks can also be purchased at the SPJST Home Office and Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. Only a limited number of cookbooks remain, so order today before they are all gone! Thanks to everyone who has purchased a cookbook. We greatly appreciate your support. Convention Details at www.spjst.org All convention information that has run in past Vestniks including available hotels, by-law recommendations, schedules, and candidate announcements can be found at www.spjst.org. Loan Modification Program Continues Through April 30 Members with SPJST high interest rate mortgage loans have an opportunity to have their interest rate
modified to the current offered interest rate, says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska. The loan must be current with all payments and taxes be paid to date. The modification program is currently available until April 30, 2012. There are no closing costs or fees for modifying a qualifying SPJST mortgage. Residential mortgages with maturities up to 20 years can be modified to 4.75 percent. Residential mortgages with terms over 20 years can be modified to 5 percent. There is also an offer to modify rates on SPJST farm and commercial mortgage loans to rates offered on new farm and commercial mortgage loans. For information, call the SPJST Mortgage Loan Department (254) 773-1575 or email annp@spjst.com.
District Minutes Correction Please note the following correction to the District Three Fall Meeting Minutes that appeared on page 6 of the April 11 Vestnik. The sentence, “Some recommendations are without merit” (referring to the SPJST Structure Committee’s proposed document presented to the ByLaw Committee) needs to be dropped, says former District Three By-Law Committee Member Al Kercho who presented the report. Brother Al shared his report with the Vestnik that was presented on October 23, 2011, at the District Three Meeting. The sentence should read, “The By-Law Committee did find merit in some of the recommendations, and these will be presented to the delegates.” Thanks, Al, for sharing this information. —SPJST—

District Three Director invites all to visit American Veterans Traveling Tribute
Dear Members, Thanks again to four lodges in District Three who contributed to bringing the American Veterans Traveling Tribute to West in May. Together, Lodges 6, Cottonwood; 35, Elk; 54, West; and 66, Waco contributed $1,500 to the project. These funds were matched with $1,500 from the District Three Director’s Discretionary Funds for a total of $3,000 from SPJST. The funds were presented to the VFW at a fundraiser breakfast in December 2011. The following article appeared in The West News on April 12, 2012. Thanks to Editor Larry Knapek for permission to reprint it in the Vestnik.
West VFW Post 4819 will be busy at the end of May as they have scheduled several events in conjunction with their bringing the American Veterans Traveling Tribute to the city. The tribute, which includes an 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., as well historical and memorial displays of past and present conflicts, is scheduled to be at the West Fair and Rodeo Grounds from May 23 through 28. The opening ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 24 at the West Fair and Rodeo Grounds. Visitation at this tribute will continue through 5 p.m. May 28, 24 hours a day. Guest speaker for the opening ceremony is Brigadier General Joseph P. Disalvo, currently III Corps Deputy Commanding General at Fort Hood. Family members having relatives listed on the wall are asked to contact Mike Driscoll at (254) 723 6774 or by emailing hstcmc@hotmail.com for reserved seating at the opening ceremony. Later that day (May 24), a commemorative banquet is planned for 6 p.m. at KC Hall in West with the meal at 7 p.m. Guest speaker for this banquet is retired Marine Col. Gerry Berry, a CH-46 helicopter pilot during the U.S. withdrawal from Saigon. Tickets for this event are $15 each which includes a New York strip steak
meal. These tickets are now available. The West VFW is currently needing volunteers to help with various aspects of bringing this tribute to the city. Driscoll reports this includes the setup and dismantling of the display, along with providing 24-hour security during its stay in West. Computer operators are also needed to aid visitors in finding names on the wall. Volunteers can obligate for as many slots as comfortable. Anyone wishing to help with any aspect of the tribute’s stay in West may contact Driscoll. Motorcycles riders are invited to participate in the honor guard and also escort the memorial to and through the city of West to the West Fair and Rodeo Grounds. The meeting site is on I-35 at Exit 351 at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23. The coordinator is Jack Barber who can be reached at (254) 722-7117. I encourage all SPJST members to visit the city of West anytime between May 24 and 28 to see the American Veterans Traveling Tribute. Likewise, if you would like to volunteer to assist during these days, please contact Mike Driscoll at (254) 723-6774 or by emailing hstcmc@hotmail.com. Lodge 47, Seaton Member Donates Family Ancestral Charts
LEFT PHOTO: Jim Hejl, second from right, displays family ancestral charts that he donated to Texas Czech Genealogical Society to be housed at SPJST as part of TCGS’ research materials. Pictured with Jim are TCGS
What began by mere accident evolved into a passion for James Hejl. Mr. Hejl first began genealogical research on the family of his late wife Mildred Skrabanek. And, as the saying goes, one thing led to another, and 13 years later, Mr. Hejl is still researching, compiling, composing, and completing family ancestral charts. The fruits of Mr. Hejl’s time and research - 17 family ancestral and lineage charts - were graciously donated to Texas Czech Genealogical Society and will be housed at the SPJST Home Office as part of TCGS’ genealogical research materials. In addition, most of the lineage charts include photographs of Czechland family ancestral villages, churches, and homesteads, immigration passenger ships, gravestones, maps, and family history narratives. To make for easy viewing and researching, Mr. Hejl constructed a stand and secured the charts, much like a flip-chart. He has given a wonderful gift of lasting heritage and beautiful memories for many, many families. Děkuji moc pane Hejl - Thank you, Mr. Hejl.

Betty broke a bone in her hand, but she seemed to be doing real well. I went to see her on a Friday, and she was planning to go home the following day. As I later learned from Betty, when they got to her house, a water pipe had burst, and her house was flooded. She has been staying with her son Wesley, and I had a call from her today. All her children were at her house today cleaning up, and she hopes to go home later this week. Rosie Steinman showed the North Texas newspaper in which there was an article on Sokol Fort Worth’s 100th anniversary celebration, and the story carried a copy of the group photo. She also showed a copy of my Ennis Daily News which carried on the front page a photo of the Czech and Then Some Band from Ennis who was invited to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Nettie Naugle asked for our prayers as she will be having a valve replacement. Our prayers and thoughts will be with you, Nettie. President Betty stated the new membership books are ready and asked that everyone take one. She thanked Jo Ann for designing the cover and doing all the typing. The book is in a new format, measures eight and one-half inches by 11 inches, and is in a folder that has brads. It is very nice. Thanks, Jo Ann. The July dining out social was discussed as Ryan’s Steak House has closed. Also, since the meeting day falls on July 4, it was voted to change the meeting to the second Wednesday which will be July 11. Betty suggested we have our meal catered and further
suggested Woody’s Creek BBQ. This, too, was approved. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to March celebrants — Lydia Alholm, Linda Horner, Marie Keller, Alene Kercho, Geraldine Kortokrox, Paula McCabe, Rose Ann Spann, Annie Whitsell, and Patti Williams. May you all have many more. Door prizes were donated by Lydia Alholm (two), Alene Kercho, Debbie Skrasek, Rosie Steinman, and Lola Taylor. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Betty Krenek and Paula Arsenault. We did have lots of happy winners. Hostesses for May will be Alicia Castillo, Marie Keller, and Mary Ann Krivanek. Following the meeting, grace was said, a great luncheon was enjoyed, then games were played. A good time was had by all.
News Pat McWilliams was missed at the meeting. I hear that she was at the hospital with her daughter who dislocated her shoulder; we hope all is well by now. Helen Skrasek went by train to Oklahoma City, then her son Ron and wife LeeAnn went to Tennessee to attend first communion of Helen’s greatgranddaughter. Helen was excited that she was going to be able to do some cooking with her older great-granddaughter, but she didn’t say what she was going to make. Mary Ann Krivanek was at the meeting without her arm sling. Mary Ann said she still has to do therapy. It was nice to have Debbie Skrasek back with us. She usually babysits on our meeting day, but traded out this month with the other grandmother so she could come. We always miss you, and next time, bring pictures. Tracy Horn gave me a quick and easy, single-serve cake recipe named “3-2-1 Cake.” Take a box of angel food cake mix and another box cake mix of your choice. Put both in a plastic bag, and mix well. Then put three tablespoons of the dry cake mix into a microwave-safe dish, such as a mug or bowl, add two tablespoons of water, stir, and microwave for one minute. You can put fruit or Cool Whip on top, and you have dessert. Store the leftover mix in the bag on a shelf. Remember, one box of cake must be angel food as it has all the eggs in it. Tracy said that she made this cake, it really works, and it is good. I hope everyone had a nice Easter. I spent the day with my sister Georgie
Morales and her family in Ennis. Naturally, we all ate too much, but it was nice to see all the family. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 2. Someone suggested that we wear pink in honor of our mothers. Don’t forget your dish for lunch and see you then. So Until, Keep Smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

A Tribute and Farewell to Christine Slavik
The world was brightened on June 22, 1917, when Christine Caroline Ondreas was born to Michael and Annie Bartek Ondreas in the community of Ratibor, Texas. Her immediate family consisted of her parents and eight children whose Christine Slavik names were Angie Cabron, Mary Adamek, Christine Slavik, Annie Cuba, Jodie Pernice, Arnold (Chilie) Ondreas, Dorothy Tellier, and Andrew Ondreas. They were raised with Czechoslovakian heritage and traditions and passed these traditions down to their families. On February 11, 2012, our dear Christine was taken from her family on earth to join her family in heaven. She outlived all of her brothers and sisters. A funeral mass was held for her on February 14 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in the Marak community and officiated by Father Walter Matus. Christine was raised in the community of Ratibor, Texas. When she was 18, she met and fell in love with Bohuslav (Buck) Slavik. They married, and their new lives began. They were blessed with four children — JoAnn, Raymond, Billy (Bill), and Carolyn (Cookie). Each of the children had the love, caring, and strong character they learned from their parents. Christine taught them the sensitivity of caring for all people with less fortunate circumstances than they were born with and an appreciation of people who were more successful than they were. In her younger days, Christine was very active in SPJST. She became a member Lodge 24, Cyclone on December 23, 1938. She also belonged to the Friendly Club in Cameron. She was active at St. Monica’s Catholic Church when the family lived in Cameron and later active at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in the Marak Community. Her interests were many. She was the cook of all cooks. She could turn a refrigerator of leftovers into a gourmet meal. All of the family loved her wonderful kolaches. Seldom were there ever enough left over to take home for the next day’s breakfast or for snacks.
She also loved to garden. Whenever she went shopping with her daughter, Carolyn (Cookie), she would always return home with her pockets full of cuttings and seeds, hoping to start her own plants. Of course, she bought and paid for plants, but enjoyed the “starter” plants she grew. Absolutely no sewing job was too much of a challenge. She made beautiful dresses for her daughters, JoAnn (Jodie) and Carolyn (Cookie) and could repair any clothes. She was a wonderful quilt maker and passed that talent on to her daughters. The quilts she made for her family will always be a cherished gift. All of her grandchildren held a special love for their “Momatine.” In fact, most of the family called her Momatine instead of Moma. Her family knew her as the “historian of Milam County.” Almost everyone with a Czech name was programmed into her mind. She knew their family history, who was married to whom, etc. Christine’s life was lengthened because of the care and love given to her by her daughters. She suffered a stroke 10 years ago and her daughter, Cookie Austin, returned home to live with her. Her older daughter, JoAnn Tatum, lived next door and the two daughters provided her with the independence she needed to be able to live at home. In Christine’s later years, her favorite social activities were playing dominoes with her family, and was she ever a winner! She looked forward to attending the Marak picnic, the Mother’s Day Dinner at Flag Hall, and New Year’s Eve dances at Star Hall. She loved to see her friends. Her biggest party was her 90th birthday celebration, hosted by JoAnn and Linwood Tatum at their home. Christine Slavik was one-of-a-kind. There will never be another daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, or grandmother like her. Those of us left behind will always remember her enjoyment of life, and the goodness and love of people she held in her heart. Christine was preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings; husband Buck Slavik; son Raymond Slavik; grandson Michael Jenkins; and grandson-in-law Adam Wallace. She is survived by her children and their spouses, JoAnn and Linwood Tatum and Carolyn (Cookie) Austin, all of Cameron and William (Billy) and Carole Slavik of Burleson; grandchildren Chris Jenkins and wife Sue of Willis, Timmy Jenkins and wife Fran-

The history of prom corsages
Prom attire consists of wearing gowns and tuxedos in the style of the season. Promgoers pore over their wardrobe so they will look their best when heading out for their big night — a party celebrating the culmination of their high school careers. One tradition of prom that continues today is the presentation of a corsage to the female attendant. Corsages have been part of formal wear for centuries. Originally, a corsage was considered to be a small
grouping of flowers worn on the center bodice of a dress. It is derived from the French term “bouquet de corsage,” which translates to bouquet of the bodice. Corsages were commonly worn to weddings because, in ancient times, it was believed that the flowers and herbs placed in the corsage were essential to warding off evil spirits. Corsages were worn by special participants in these ceremonies. In the 20th century, corsages evolved into something that served as a gift for women attending special social dances, like their high school proms. The corsage worn in this manner was part of the courting process.
VӖSTNÍK
The gentleman would show respect to his date’s parents, including bringing flowers or a gift. The gentleman would then take a flower out of the bouquet and present it to his date and attach it to her dress. As prom dresses evolved to feature spaghetti straps or no straps at all, pinning the corsage to the dress bodice was no longer practical. Therefore, corsages soon morphed into small bouquets that were attached to an elastic band. The result was something that could be worn around the wrist. Nowadays, there are various styles of corsages that can be worn at the waist and even in the hair.

Although it is customary to purchase a corsage, gentlemen who are looking to save a little money can construct one on their own. With floral tape and a few rosebuds, a corsage can be put together at a relatively low cost. For dates who are allergic to floral cor-
sages, feathers, beads, faux flowers, or crystals can be substituted to make a statement and prevent a sneezing fit. A gentleman should ask his date what color gown she is wearing to coordinate the corsage with the gown. However, neutral-colored blooms of

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Dance Beseda at State Capitol Members of Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club danced the beseda at the Texas State Capitol in Austin in honor of Texas Independence Day on Friday, March 2, 2012!
Get your children volunteers
(SPM Wire) April is National Volunteer Month, and there is no better time for you to get involved in the community. Parents are encouraged to set a great example for their children by volunteering with them when they are young. Here are a few great volunteer ideas for parents and kids: Visit a nursing home. The simple act of sharing a story or playing a game could brighten an elderly person’s day.
Donate food. Have your children pick out items at the grocery store; then take the food to a pantry together.
LEFT PHOTO: Youth outside the Capitol. RIGHT PHOTO: Youth pose before dancing inside the Capitol.
Clean up. Pick up litter in a local park. It could be a fun way to get outdoors and will instill in your children respect for the environment. —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Shares March Activities
Dear Readers, On Sunday, March 18, 2012, Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club met at the hall for our monthly meeting. Elisabeth Cowan and I were the only members that were able to attend. In the meeting, we were given upcoming dates for SPJST events such as the District
Three Spring Meeting, YAD, and camp. I entered a contest at my school for the art tee-shirt design earlier this year. My design won and is on the 2012 art shirt! I'm going to keep trying to win SPJST’s tee-shirt contest. On Sunday, March 25, I went with
my aunt Lyn Olds, uncle Mark, and cousins Marchele and Andrew Johnson to the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Dallas. We went to see the entries for the Festival of Balloons. The designs they made with balloons was amazing. They made hats, dresses, cars, and more—entirely out
of balloons. The festival is held every two years. Unfortunately, next time it will be held in Denver. If it comes to Texas again, please make plans to go. You won’t regret it. Fraternally, Melinda McClellan, age 13 —SPJST—

TCGS to publish “A Tribute to Czech Cooks”
A new cookbook is in the works! The Texas Czech Genealogical Society is now accepting recipes for A Tribute to Czech Cooks. The title of the book is taken from a Ceske Stopy issue of the same name. The Stopy paid tribute to Czech cooks by publishing their recipes, along with pho-
Delisle Doherty for Vice President
One of the primary needs in updating SPJST’s insurance operations is in the area of technology, primarily software. Delisle Doherty is very well qualified to accomplish these advances, and Lodge 181, Conroe endorses him for Vice President.

tos and tidbits of information about the recipe and/or the cook. The issue was so popular that it sold out immediately and had to be reordered. At that time, it was decided that TCGS should publish a full-sized cookbook, honoring Czech cooks. Steve Orsak and his daughter, Dawn, have joined the book committee and will be heading up this unique project. Food categories will include appetizers, beverages, breads, breakfast foods, cakes, candy, casseroles cookies, Czech men’s recipes, desserts, main dishes, pies, soups/stews, salads, vegetables and fruits, and canning.

To make the book extra special, we are asking that tribute be paid to the person who prepared the recipe. For example, if you submit a recipe for your grandfather’s smoked sausage, include the recipe, a photo, and an article about him. Please note that if you submitted a recipe which honored a Czech cook in the original Ceske Stopy issue, the information must be resubmitted for this book. So don’t delay. Gather up those old, delicious recipes that have been in your family for years, write a short article about the recipe, and include a photo of the person whom you remember making the dish. If possible, also list his family members and mention the area where they lived. Send the information to: Charlene Hurta 1231 CR 201A Angleton, Texas 77515
