Tow Mater and Lightning McQueen Visit SPJST Car Show
Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club members Colton Ammons, left, and Ryan Davidson check out Tow Mater and Lightning McQueen—two of the 191 vehicles entered in the SPJST Car Show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival held April 21 in Downtown Temple. The car show benefitted the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center.
SPJST lodges across the state will participate in Join Hands Day this Saturday, May 5. Georgia and Luther Bockman hand out American Cancer Society literature and SPJST material supplied by Lodge 179, Warrenton Sales Agent Ricky Weyand at the stew supper held recently in Ledbetter. SPJST Lodge 179 partnered with the Ledbetter Homemakers Club to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department as a Join Hands Day project. More on page 13, and see Join Hands Day projects listed on pages 19 and 20 of this week’s Vestnik.
Preserve Czech Heritage for Future Generations. Please Donate $10 Today. By Mildred Holeman Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center Board Member Lodge 88, Houston
As I walked into the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, I looked around at the farm equipment which was used by the early Czech immigrants to eke out a living in America. They cleared thousands of areas of wooded land for cultivation. Their tools were crude, and the work was hard and strenuous. The
Museum tells a story of how the early Czech settlers survived in a sometimes unfriendly environment and yet gave to the United States many of its intellectuals, artists, doctors, lawyers, astronauts, and scientists. Czech soldiers fought and died in every war in which the United States has been engaged. They learned the English language and blended in, but at the same time, they managed to maintain their own heritage. Because of their sacri-

fices and determination, we now enjoy our freedom and the fruits of their labor. Without a Czech city attorney in Dallas named Henry Kucera, you could never have flown in and out of Love Field. It was quite a feat at that time to get it passed all the red tape and built. Kucera’s knowledge of municipal laws dubbed him as the best city attorney in the country. Many other brilliant Czechs have contributed greatly to the United States,

and we must preserve their memory for future generations. There is a statue of a little Czech girl standing in the Museum, and I marveled at the beautiful hand work on her dress. The women were a hardy group, having to sew all the clothes, do the cooking, tend the children, work in the fields, can food for winter, made quilts, and other jobs to keep their family comfortable. We have displays of their work. All this deserves to be preserved for future generations. If you haven’t visited the Museum,

Join Hands Day Saturday, May 5
This Saturday is Join Hands Day. What is Join Hands Day? On the first
Saturday in May, fraternalists and nonfraternalists alike come together for Join Hands Day to make a difference in their communities through helpful projects that connect youths and adults. Join Hands Day gives fraternal benefit societies and volunteer organizations the opportunity to reach out to people they don’t know, to connect generations and to develop new relationships. Several SPJST lodges and youth clubs have registered projects with the Home Office. These projects are listed on pages 19 and 20 of this week’s Vestnik. If your lodge has not registered its project, please do so today at www.spjst.org - click on “Join Hands Day.”
Knowledge and Networking This week’s Vestnik is sent to the printer from the 2012 American Fraternal Alliance Fraternal and Communications Section Mid-Year Meeting held in Austin. President Brian, State FAC Chester, and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy, and I are gathering many ideas and new knowledge that we will be able to apply in the fraternal and communications areas of SPJST. Plus, we are networking with fraternal and communications leaders from fraternal benefit societies across America and Canada. It’s been a great experience.
“Bondage to Freedom” On Tuesday, April 17, the Czech Heritage Museum, Texas Czech Genealogical Society, and SPJST hosted “Bondage to Freedom,” an evening that featured Czech native Zdenek Janik speaking at the Home Office. The evening also included refreshments and tours of the Czech Heritage Museum and TCGS’ Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor. It was a wonderful evening of the three organizations working together. Thanks to the more
than 125 people who attended the event. See photos in next week’s Vestnik.
Bloomin’ Successful Car Show SPJST sponsored and hosted the car show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival on Saturday, April 21. What an exciting day it was! We had a record 191 vehicles that entered the show. The festival attracted more than 10,000 people. The Czech Heritage Museum also set up a display area and hosted quilt and lace demonstrations. It was a wonderful day! See pictures and results in the May 16 Vestnik. Scholarship Winners and Graduates SPJST Scholarship and Leadership Grant winners will soon be announced and will be featured in a May Vestnik. Also, any SPJST member who is graduating is encouraged to complete the form on the back of this week’s Vestnik and send in his/her information along with a photo. We are proud of these members, and we want to recognize them! Please share this form with your children and grandchildren who are graduating SPJST members. The deadline to receive information is Tuesday, May 8.
Next Week’s Vestnik— Convention Issue Next week’s May 9 Vestnik will be the convention issue. This Vestnik will feature reports from the By-Law, Finance, Insurance, and Publication Committees; Supreme Lodge President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Directors; and Financial Secretary. Other convention items including a schedule and map will also be included. The 31st SPJST Convention is set for June 11 to 13 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center in Killeen, Texas. Convention registration and a howdy party will be held on Sunday, June 10 at the convention center.

make a special effort to do so. Step back in time and you will be glad you did. As you walk through, you will develop a real affinity for those brave souls who risked their lives and made sacrifices for the life you enjoy today.
Will you please give? Have you forgotten the Challenge? I urge each SPJST member to send $10 or more to:

The Challenge ends May 31, 2012. Donor’s name will be published in a June issue of the Vestnik. Please help! Remember, whatever you give away remains the only thing of eternal value that you have left in the world. Your ancestors left you a lot and sacrificed much. If you have to sacrifice to give to the challenge, it will indeed be small in comparison. If you can’t give, please pray for the success of our endeavor. —SPJST—

No district director or Supreme Lodge officer should serve on this committee. Article 3 (page 8) - Convention of the SPJST has the power to: Elect the president and seven directors of the Supreme Lodge.
Article 37 - Vice President (a) The vice president of the Supreme Lodge assists the president and would temporarily accept and carry out the responsibilities of the president in case of a vacancy until the Supreme Lodge could find a qualified individual to fill that position until the next convention. The term: Effective immediately means as effective immediately upon the action taken. Bobby L. Wuensche Lodge 48, Beyersville Delegate District Two Director ***
The majority of the directors agree that the SPJST needs to move forward with plans to hire the officers. At this time, we are recommending the hiring of the Vice President and SecretaryTreasurer. This recommendation is not to do away with our existing officers or to take away the delegate’s voting rights. This action has been recommended by the American Fraternal Alliance. It has also been recommended by a number of delegates in past conventions. The position of Financial Secretary has been filled through the hiring process and has provided the SPJST with a very qualified individual. He has a degree in accounting a degree in law, a degree in realty, and he has a vast knowledge in computer technology. SPJST can no longer depend on electing officers because today’s business world requires individuals with the same types of qualifications as was acquired in the hiring of the Financial Secretary. Almost all of the large fraternal insurance companies hire their officers. I hope that the delegates to the 31st SPJST Convention will give some thought to “Does SPJST continue to do business as they have in the past or do we want SPJST to move forward into today’s business world.” Editor’s Note: Above statement was at-
tached to Bobby L. Wuensche’s previous recommendation. —SPJST—
Statement received by the By-Law Committee
Ronnie, Bobby Wuensche sent me an email asking what I thought about an amendment to the by-laws for hiring all officers except the President of SPJST. Below is my reply. At the board meeting this week, I asked him how the poll turned out. He refused to answer me, but did say he sent the amendment to you. I asked him what the cover letter said; again he refused to answer me. I don’t know if he said the board was with him or not. I DO NOT support an amendment to hire the Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer. Mike Ahlstrom Lodge 32, Victoria District Six Director —SPJST—
By-Law Recommendation
Article 37 - Vice President Change: (c) The Supreme Lodge Vice President has the right to appoint new sales agents in areas where he feels the need arises and in the best interest of the Society. A local lodge officer must be contacted before appointing a new sales agent for any one lodge. All sales agents must be active in lodge activities, namely, attend the majority of their lodge meetings and regularly scheduled sales agent seminars. The agent must turn documentation in on a quarterly basis to the Supreme Lodge Vice President’s office that verifies the meetings he/she has attended. If the above requirements are not met, the Supreme Lodge Vice President will contact the sales agent in question and redefine his/her responsibilities. If sales agent cannot comply with his/her obligations, such agent will not be eligible for any incentives, drawings, bonuses, etc. or special recognition on the district or state level, and such agent’s contract can be terminated.
Reasoning: We are a fraternal organization - not a commercial life insurance company. If an agent is not familiar with or active in an SPJST lodge, he/she does not have the knowledge and first hand information to pass on to his prospect about our organization and all the benefits SPJST provides. Idea: Possibly the recognition of agents could be announced on a quarterly basis, by the months within that quarter. Incentives can be paid and agents can be recognized after verifying that the agent has attended a majority of lodge meetings. Submitted by, Patsy Koslovsky Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Suggestion received by the By-Law Committee
Dear By-Law Committee, During our district delegate meeting, our district By-Law Committee representative informed us that the Structure Committee will be submitting a recommendation. The delegates of District Three would like to request that the By-Law Committee make sure that the recommendation is submitted clearly so that the delegates are very aware of what they are voting on at this convention. It was told to us that we would be only voting on the “format” of the new by-law structure. We would like for the Structure Committee to make clear what they mean by “format.” Recommendation to the committee that they present the recommendation as one of the following:
1) If only wanting the delegates to vote if they would approve pulling out some items into a Standard Operation Procedure Manual (SOP), then only submit that request in writing. Then, if there are actual changes to the wording of the by-laws to be voted on at the 2016 Convention, it could be handed out to the delegates after original recommendation has passed. 2) If only wanting to have delegates vote on the “format” of the by-law book, then submit request to the ByLaw Committee should look similar to the following:
Article I Name (Any changes to the wording of the bylaw will be addressed later for review to be voted on at the 2016 Convention.)
6
Wednesday, May 2, 2012
Article II Principal Office (Any changes to the wording of the bylaw will be addressed later for review to be voted on at the 2016 Convention.)
Article III Mission Statement (Any changes to the wording of the bylaw will be addressed later for review to be voted on at the 2016 Convention.)
Article IV Membership (Any changes to the wording of the bylaw will be addressed later for review to be voted on at the 2016 Convention.)
. . . and so on. Then, if there are actual changes to the wording of the by-law to be voted on at the 2016 Convention, it could be handed out to the delegates after original recommendation has passed. 3) If the intent of the committee is to submit changes in the “format” and the actual by-law then submit the document with the “format” and wording change.
We were told that when the committee provides the actual changes, it will be shown with three columns. First, being the new by-law format and any changes. The second would be the wording from the old by-law. With the third column being used to show where the information was pulled from the old by-law book. We think this will be very beneficial to the person reviewing the changes. This would only be used when the committee recommends changes to the actual “format” and changes to the by-law. It would also be helpful to put the by-laws that are changing in red with the ones that did not change in black. Respectfully submitted by, Mary Steinman for Delegates of District Three —SPJST—
By-Law Recommendation
Explanation: In its January 2009 meeting, the Supreme Lodge introduced guidelines that helped to define an efficient process of designating marginal lodges and/or reassigning members from inactive to active lodges. The goal of these procedures was to ensure that all SPJST members belong to an
active lodge that has demonstrated a real and sustained commitment to fraternal ideals. Three years have passed since those guidelines were established. Generally stated, the program has worked well; however, two tenets of the program — those which define (a.) to which lodge members are to be reassigned; and (b.) what becomes of the assets of the pre-exist- ing lodge, require additional clarification. The following recommendation is being submitted as a new procedural by-law and would appear immediately following Article 70 of the present By-Laws, which come under the section titled, “New Lodges and Lodge Mergers.”
Proposed By-Law: Article 71 (a) In the event that (1) a lodge posts an annual lapse rate of 20 percent or greater on the number of new life insurance certificates issued and/or (2.) demonstrates a sustained inability to meet essential fraternal directives, the lodge will be considered by the Supreme Lodge to be operating at “marginal” status. Members belonging to marginal lodges or inactive lodges as determined by an earnest effort of review and consideration, will be subject to reassignment to an active lodge, pending necessary protocol and notification.
(b) Each lodge member shall receive notification from the SPJST Home Office of the decision to reassign his/her membership to any active SPJST lodge in the State of Texas, along with a complete listing of lodges. Should the member fail to respond to the request for reassignment within two weeks, he/she will be assigned by the SPJST Home Office to an active SPJST lodge nearest his/her current address on file with the SPJST Home Office. In the event that there is no address on file or if the member lives out-of-state, the membership shall be reas- signed to the active lodge nearest the regular meeting place of the old lodge.
(c) Lodges agreeing to accept this special class of reassigned members will not be held accountable for any lapses in membership that may be attributed to the reassigned members for a period of 36 months, calculated from the date of reassignment. This relates, especially, to any incentives which the lodge may be eligible for under the guidelines of any prevailing lodge incentive program. As such, any lapses credited to the reassigned members will not be held against the lodge that
votes to accept reassigned members.
(d) Lodges that have experienced a reassignment of membership will remain in “inactive” status for a period of five years from the time of reassignment. At some point during this 60month period, the Supreme Lodge and/or local membership may find it practical to “reorganize” the lodge. As such, it will not be necessary to recharter the lodge but merely to “reorganize.” Should a period of five years lapse from the time of reassignment, the lodge will be officially “disbanded” and require the reassignment of a new number for the purpose of organizing and chartering. This measure will be retroactive to include any lodges which over the last 24 months have had members reassigned to active lodges.
(e) Once the period of five years lapse from the time of reassignment and provided that there are no forseeable plans to reorganize the lodge, the lodge will be officially “disbanded” and assets residing in the Lodge Management Account and previously assigned to a lodge where members have been reassigned will be redirected to the receiving lodges in an amount proportionate to the number of members who had been reassigned.
(f) Upon occasion there arises the desire to pay appropriate and due respect to the lodge for the fraternal commitment which may have predated the reassignment of members. In the event that members are assigned from a previously active and longstanding SPJST lodge, the Supreme Lodge, shall at its discretion, designate an official and honorable “retiring” of the lodge and its identifying number much the same way in team sports that a player’s number is sometimes “retired” as a tribute to that individual for his or her valued commitment. In that regard, retiring a lodge number — especially one which reflects the lives and dedication of generations of SPJST members — should receive deserved honor and recognition. Effective: Immediately

By-Law Recommendation
Explanation: Increasingly, leadership teams are turning to self-assessments as a vital governance tool. Self assessment provides officers, directors and other key personnel with the opportunity to step back from its everyday business and address larger, more fundamental issues. In addition to allowing boards to reflect on how well they are meeting their responsibilities, selfassessment helps leadership teams to focus on integral aspects of their work— from strategic direction setting and oversight to service to the members and to the communities that SPJST seeks to serve. Self-assessments can lead to a more engaged and higher performing leadership team. The proposed By-Law would appear as Article 32 (p) of the present By- Laws.
Proposed By-Law: That each member of the SPJST Supreme Lodge* undergo on an annual basis, a review of personal performance against established criteria, for purposes of assessing its effectiveness. The performance of each officer and director is appraised at least annually, through a formal performance appraisal process conducted by the Supreme Lodge.
The annual review process, under the supervision of the Human Resource Administrator, should begin 12 months prior to the review with setting goals for the year and establishing the criteria against which the officers and directors will be evaluated.
A suggested “SPJST Leadership Team Evaluation” is included for review and consideration by the SPJST By-Law Committee.”
*The Editor and Director of Communication is encouraged and invited to participate in this annual cross-evaluation process at the discretion of the Publication Committee.

Bobby L. Wuensche announces candidacy for District Two Director Dear Members and Delegates of District Two, It has been an enjoyable experience serving as the District Two Director for the past eight years. I have learned that it takes teamwork to keep SPJST going in the right direction. At times, the Supreme Lodge has had to make some changes in the direction that SPJST was going. Some of those decisions were not always easy to make. It took the efforts of all the officers and directors working together to make those changes. It is through those ups and downs that we have come to be a more experienced group. Considering today’s economy being what it is, I feel that SPJST is staying strong. We have overcome many losses and thus showed a positive gain for the year. I have had the pleasure of meeting and enjoying the fellowship of many wonderful members of District Two. I will always treasure the friendships that I have come to know.
I ask for your support at the 31st SPJST Convention, so that I can be a part of making SPJST grow into the future. Fraternally, Bobby L. Wuensche Lodge 48, Beyersville —SPJST—

Thanks to all lodges who plan to participate in this worthy event. Please remember to register your project with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and also with Join Hands Day so your lodge can receive the $100 incentive money from the Home Office. Both of these registrations can be done on the SPJST website. Click on Join Hands Day and complete steps 1 and 2. As soon as confirmation is received that your project is registered, we will cut a check for your lodge and get it in the mail to you.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 12 with tournament play starting at 10 a.m. If you will recall, all state tournaments are open to non-members as well as members, so please invite your fellow members as well as non-member friends to participate. Remember our Fallen Soldiers Monday, May 28 is Memorial Day Please remember all of our fallen soldiers and also, remember our troops overseas and at home. Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. To help reeducate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in
2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to “Taps.”
End of Summer Getaway Due to popular demand, good times again await you at the Corpus Christi Getaway. Start making your plans now to join us on August 10 to 12 for a funfilled weekend. SPJST Cookbook Sales of the new cookbook—SPJST Tasty Traditions have been excellent. If you have not already purchased your copy, please do so soon to be sure that you will have one or two books. Also keep in mind that these books make great gift items (graduation, Mother’s Day, weddings, birthdays, etc., and of course, do not forget Christmas which is only eight short months away).
Mother’s Day The month of May is a very busy month. The most important date to remember will be May 13. Mother’s Day is a special date for many. The United States celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. In the 1880s and 1890s, there were several attempts to establish a Mother’s Day, but they didn’t succeed beyond the local level. The holiday was created by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908 as a day to honor one’s mother. Jarvis wanted to accomplish her mother’s dream of making a celebra-

tion for all mothers, although the idea didn’t take off until she enlisted the services of wealthy Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker. She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914. The holiday eventually became so highly commercialized that many, including its founder, Anna Jarvis, considered it a “Hallmark Holiday,” one with an overwhelming commercial purpose. Jarvis eventually ended up opposing the holiday she had helped to create. She died in 1948, regretting what had become of her holiday. In the United States, Mother’s Day remains one of the biggest days for sales of flowers, greeting cards, and the like; it is also the biggest holiday for long-distance telephone calls. Please remember all of our mothers and mothers-to-be this month by honoring them at your May meeting. They do so much in every day life without being thanked as often as they should be. Lodge 154, Fort Worth Celebrates Easter with Annual Picnic Lodge 154, Fort Worth celebrated Easter with its annual Easter picnic with Sokol Fort Worth. The rainy weather didn’t stop the fun—just brought some of the outdoor activities inside. Lunch was enjoyed by all with a potluck-style meal and desserts, desserts, desserts! Then, the Easter egg hunt was split into three hunts due to the space limits of being inside. The egg hunt prize egg winners were: Ages 3 to 6 Years 1st and 5th - Danielle Hardin
Sunday, April 8, 2012 • Sokol Fort Worth
2nd - Ellie Hix 3rd - Jazmine Mason 4th - Amber Utter
Ages 7 to 10 Years 1st - Macy Hix 2nd - Case Mason 3rd - Brianna Russell 4th - Reid Jones 5th - Kassie Ball
Ages 11 to 13 Years 1st - Angel Pace 2nd and 5th - Sophie Milan 3rd and 4th - Clark Jones
Fun, Fun, Fun The rain cleared up just in time for the raw egg toss to be taken outside onto the grass (thank goodness!) With the rain, the grass must have been really soft because some of those raw eggs rolled and hopped, but never broke. Children’s winners were Lillian Delgado and Makayla Estrada; ladies’ winners—Klair Stoeppleman and Talia Milan; men’s winners— Wade Garrett and Luke Davis; and couple’s winners—Ron Meador and Evelyn McClaren. Unforfunately, due to the rain, the
“adult beverage” hunts and the softball game were called off, but a big group stayed around to visit and play cards. Several adult and youth club members stayed and helped clean up and put the gymnastics equipment back up for Sokol classes the next morning. Our lodge is very lucky to share our building and activites with our sister organization—Sokol Fort Worth. Submitted by, Lesli Milan Youth Leader —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on April 12, 2012. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, and I arrived at 8 a.m. We started arranging table and chairs and stretched Ann Clagett’s quilt. By then, our quilters came - Eleanora Pelzel, Irene Prachyl, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Georgia Holy, Victoria Vlk, Joan Strunc, Margaret Martinek, Martha Ritchey, Dorothy Bobalek, and Ginny Svehlak. Thank you to all our quilters. By lunchtime, we had 21 members and one guest, Joe Ehrenberger. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we enjoyed lunch. As always, our quilters go first, and we had many delicious dishes and desserts. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to the clean-up crew. After lunch, President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Marion Craig, Lillie Mahdak, and Adele Janousek. The minutes were read by Secretary Margaret, and Treasurer Dorothy gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced our April birthday celebrants Joyce Ehrenberger and Dorothy M. Kudrna. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Joyce, and a birthday card was signed for Dorothy M. Get well/thinking of you wish cards were signed for Kay Lynn Kovar and Libbie Elsik. Libbie Elsik hurt her back and was in Waxahachie rehab. We hope all is going well. We also signed a card for Betty Landsfeld in Fort Worth. She
fell and was taken to the emergency room then went to her son’s house. We all are thinking of you and wish you a speedy recovery. Thank you went out to the following - Georgia Wesnowitch for donating plastic supplies; Libbie Vrla for group pictures; and Irene Prachyl for making signs - “Sewing Circle Supplies” - to put on our cabinets in the kitchen. Also to Dorothy J. for going home to get her coffee pot. The one we had got mixed up with the Sokol pot, and it didn’t work. We hope to get it all straightened out this week. Ann Clagett read a note from Kay Lynn Kovar thanking us for thinking of her when she had the cut hand accident; a letter from the Dallas Life Minerstering Homeless Association for our donation made in memory of Anne Zvolanek; a beautiful Easter card from Geraldine Zhanel and her generous donation to the Circle for dues. The Circle thanks you, and we all are looking forward to seeing you this summer when Paula is not teaching and can bring you. Ann also read a funny clipping from a magazine about getting old. We all had a good laugh. President Dorothy announced the next meeting will be May 10. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. She thanked all for coming, for the wonderful food, quilting, arranging of the table and chairs, and clean-up. President Dorothy brought the door prize, and it was won by Dorothy Booth. Little gifts were handed out by Ann. The meeting was adjourned.
Other News Dorothy J. Kudrna, Joe Kostak, and all her family attended the wedding of her son Kevin Kudrna and Jennifer Byrd on March 25 in Austin at Chapel Dulcinea at Crystal Hills Drive. Reception was held at Scholz Biergarten in downtown Austin. The couple will live in Argyle, Texas. The rehearsal dinner was held at Matt’s El Rancho Mexican Restaurant in Austin. Dorothy had an album full of beautiful pictures. It looked like they had a wonderful time. We wish the couple much happiness always. All of our members whom I talked with enjoyed their Easter Sunday dinner with family and friends. Pete and I had all our family and sister Libbie Vrla which we enjoyed and were able to get the egg hunt in before the rain started. As great-granddaughter Sarah picked up the last egg, she said it is sprinkling then it really started raining.
We had a wonderful day. Everyone, thanks for coming, take care, and see you May 10. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—
Ladies’ Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The meeting of the Ladies’ Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was called to order on April 10, 2012, with 47 members and one guest attending. President Marlene Bass led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and warmly welcomed guest Paul Morbitzer. His visit was short, and he was going home to Albuquerque later in the day. Mom and Dad, Pauline and Don, were sad to see him go. Vice President Theretta Praslicka read Psalm 72:19 and offered a sweet prayer. Minutes were read and approved, and Treasurer Pauline Morbitzer gave the financial report. Sunshine Chairman Pauline announced the deaths of Frank Prochaska and Shirley Zich. They passed away recently, and a card has gone out to the Prochaska family and to the caretakers of Shirley whose family is deceased. Our lovely Gloria Farek had a freaky fall recently, and as a result, she broke her cheekbone and received a spiral fracture of her upper right arm. She was in Cityview Care Center at the time of our meeting; however, she has since moved to her daughter’s home to recuperate further. Gloria’s willpower and determination, I’m guessing, will not keep her down for long. In fact, it was reported that she was already showing great progress that the doctors did not expect so soon. They just didn’t know Gloria. There was no unfinished business, and under new business, another possible trip to WinStar was brought forward. Due to advertising in our local newspaper, it was learned that the casino is now running buses daily to Oklahoma. This may give us an opportunity to schedule a trip north after all. More details were needed, and the topic will be revisited at next month’s meeting. Also, President Marlene read an article from the Vestnik regarding the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple and its fundraising efforts. A motion was made by Lucy Martinez that the Circle donate $100 to the cause, and Lisa Juran seconded the motion. The pro-
VӖSTNÍK
posal carried overwhelmingly. As a side note, during the discussion someone stated that we didn’t have many Czech ladies in the group. After a show of hands, it seemed from my viewpoint that almost everyone in the room was of Czech heritage. It was pretty cool to see all those hands go up. Hostesses for the day were Alene Kercho, Sunny Kercho, Mary Ann Kozel, Betty Krenek, and Shirley Martin. We are so thankful to have our wonderful members volunteer to prepare the meal each month. Good food was plentiful, delicious, and good for the soul. Thank you again, ladies. We changed the way we presented the birthday celebrants this month. As names were called, President Marlene asked each one of them to come forward. After everyone was in place, they were treated to the “Happy Birthday” song, and their picture was taken. Then, they were surprised by Marlene asking them to speak about themselves and their lives (if they wanted to). Five of the 11 shared a bit of their history with the lodge and something personal. We found out that Lisa Juran’s family goes back to the very early beginnings of Lodge 92. Joyce Tesar grew up in an orphanage, and she shared how she met her husband Frank. Marie Keller is a retired nurse and as a member of St. Thomas’ Friendship Club heard about the Ladies’ Circle at the lodge. She’s been coming ever since. Alene Kercho is a 42-year member of SPJST and a former youth leader of the lodge. Her participation in the Ladies’ Circle began after she retired from teaching school in 1995. Wilma Perry has two sisters who are also members. Their mother and grandmother were very active many years ago, making the daughters third generation ladies in the group. If I’ve left anyone out, please forgive me for I can’t read the notes I took at the meeting. Other birthday ladies honored were Patti Williams, Cherie Price, Joy Booe, and Linda Horner. And to Sue Wallace and Margaret Willenburg, who were absent, we send our best. Announcements made were. Arrangements for the Frank Prochaska services were later that week. Lucy Martinez clarified the untrue information being circulated via email regarding Amendment 12 on the upcoming election ballot. The email should be disregarded, and all should plan to vote on May 12. Our last announcement was made by Robyn Brownlee who works at Big Lots off of Cherry

Lane. She shared that the store was moving into a larger place around June 1, and she was clearly excited that she would be working in a nice, new location. Congratulations to her. Last, once again, there was an abundance of door prizes. The winners were showered with a big bag of peanuts, plants, tote bag, a “Las Vegas clock, wine, wall art, cute kitchen towels, billfold (no money in it), soaps, candles, and more. The ladies giggled as they enjoyed opening the packages and found out what their hidden treasures were. After a show-and-tell session, the blessing for lunch was given, and bingo followed. It was a great meeting, and we truly enjoyed being together once again. Fraternally yours, Joan Simek Shropshire Secretary —SPJST—

Operating out of Spring Branch since June 1972, he had the opportunity to truly get to know his customers over the years. It was well known that Dean was willing to help
anyone in any way he could. Even with all of his many customers, Dean always made time for others. Being a volunteer in a multitude of community organizations, such as the Spring Branch Memorial Go Texan Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for seven years and holding many offices over the years with the SPJST Lodge 196, Houston-West in Cypress, Texas, he also found time for his favorite activities—hunting, fishing, skiing, motor cycling, and tinkering with things or cars around the house—just to name a few. Dean always seemed happiest spending time with his wife, family, and friends. Being baptized and confirmed as a Lutheran, his religious commitments were upheld through his attendance at the Houston Brethren Church in Houston, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Houston, and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale. Services for Dean Patschke were hosted on Saturday, April 28 by Houston Brethren Church and Dr. Jerry Terrill beginning at 9 a.m. Family visitations were followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Lunch was provided before making the way to the 5 p.m. committal service at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale. A dinner followed the committal service. Dean Ray Patschke was loved by everyone he knew and will be remembered in our hearts forever. SPJST Youth
Section
State Youth Director: May updates
Dear Members, May is here, and that means school will soon be out and a number of our youth will be graduating from high school. Graduating seniors, always remember the values your parents, grandparents, and the SPJST Youth Program have instilled in you and know that they help to define the person you are today. Most of all, believe in yourself and have the courage and conviction to stand up for what is right. Strive to do your best. Congratulations! I wish you much success with everything you do in life. It’s that time again as District Youth Achievement Days and camps are right around the corner. We want 2012 to be another great year of activities and learning. Through articles in the Vestnik, Education and Nature Center Executive Director John Hoelscher has communicated many changes at Cooper Farm. The youth will be able to use the blob as well as the hayride, ropes course, lake, swimming pool, and other activities. The new flag pole will be an awesome addition to our morning and evening gatherings. Many of our chaperones will have a rush of memories of Camp Val Verde when they see the new ENC camp bell. I am looking forward to spending time at all district camps. I attended District Two Spring Meeting hosted by Lodge 48, Beyersville. The youth had an Easter egg hunt and was visited by none other than the Easter Bunny. I will attend District Three and Four Spring meetings before the end of April. Lodge 6, Cottonwood will host District Three Spring meeting, and Lodge 219, El Paso will be hosting District Four Spring Meeting in Midland, Texas. I have received many of the first place winning Easter

eggs here at the Home Office that the youth have decorated so nicely. Congratulations, youth! You have done an excellent job decorating the eggs. On Saturday, March 31, Melanie, David, and I made our way to Lodge 88, Houston for their annual Easter egg hunt and party. I had a great time hunting Easter eggs and visiting with Lodge 88, Houston members. Thank you, District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales, who took the time to boil 70 dozen eggs and having the youth decorate the eggs the evening before the festivities. On Saturday, April 7, Melanie, David and I drove the float to Lodge 18, Elgin for their annual Easter egg hunt for the Elgin community. I had a great time helping with the festivities and talking to Lodge 18, Elgin members. I also enjoyed helping Lodge 18, Elgin Vice President Ray Nelson with the prize giveaway. Thank you to Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Leader Joyce Bowen and Vice President Ray Nelson.
Online Camp Forms Youth Leaders, please tell parents that they can go online to the SPJST youth website and complete their children’s youth camper application. The deadline to complete applications for camp is May 15, 2012. The reason for moving the deadline is to give Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez enough time to mail out the Campers Release Form to be signed by the parent and returned to the Home Office June 1. District Youth Counselors, please let your chaperones know that their adult chaperone application is also online at www.spjst.org in the youth section. Deadline to submit their chaperone application is May 15. Remind parents when filling out the application, they need to place an answer in each box. If the question does not apply then type “NA” in the box. Parents will need to insert their chil-
dren’s, “immunization history.” I am receiving applications that say, “On file with school.” This will not be accepted. I have to have the information in those boxes. These forms will be setup and the information will remain with the record. Next year, parents will only have to update the information if needed. Thank you for your cooperation.

Dear Members, This weekend, I went to the Bloomin’ Temple Festival with SPJST Beseda Dancers. We got to perform for a pretty big crowd. Afterwards, my mom and dad took me to ride the mechanical bull. I jumped up on the bull, and Dad talked me

Towards the middle of the day, we performed the beseda for the crowd. We had a lot of fun. We made a few mistakes, but I’m sure Patsy will have us practicing until we are perfect again!

Amanda Hoggard
In theatre arts class, we have been working for over a month on a speech competition that was districtwide. I picked my solo dramatic piece — “I’ll Be Looking for You Ace” by Jennifer Lohrfink. It is a true story about a teenage girl dealing with her 11-yearold brother’s death. I worked my hardest, since I really wanted to place. Last speech festival, I didn’t do as good as I wanted to, and I wanted that to change. The day finally came, and I did the best I could at performing, but I had a lot of competition. I loved other people’s pieces, and I was worried I wouldn’t win. At the award ceremony, I crossed my fingers and prayed that I would win first place. My category was starting to be announced. One person after another was called up, and I was getting nervous. Then, I heard the words “From Bradley Middle School, Amanda Hoggard.” My jaw dropped. I was so surprised! I ran up on stage, while my classmates were cheering me on. We all exchanged hugs, and my family and friends were all so proud of me. Turns out, hard work does pay off.
