Why They Say That: White Elephant Today, “white elephant” means a gift that you get that you either don’t want, can’t use, is ugly, but you can’t give it away and are stuck with it. The origin goes back to Siam when white elephants were considered sacred. Royal families usually took care of them. But, if this family got mad at a commoner, they would give him a white elephant that he was forced to feed and take care of (at his own expense) and couldn’t get rid of it because it was sacred. Thus, the gift was really meant as a burden.
Political Ads and Endorsements The Vestnik will accept political advertisements and endorsements. Political candidates wishing to advertise in the Vestnik must be SPJST members. Political endorsements for any elected office (SPJST or other) must be in the form of a paid advertisement in the Vestnik. Individuals will pay the commercial advertisement rate ($6 per column inch); lodges will pay the lodge rate ($2 per column inch). Lodge advertisements for political endorsements must have been voted on and approved by the members in a lodge meeting. All political advertisements and endorsements must be paid in advance. —SPJST—

Larry Capps announces candidacy for District Four Director Dear Members and Delegates of District Four, I’m a 58-year-old Navy veteran of 21 years. When I retired in 1994, I started my insurance career as an agent with a small insurance company. After several years of hard work, I became an assistant manager. I realized that I could make more of a positive impact on people on my own. In 2005, I started selling insurance as an independent agent. I was a part of another fraternal insurance company for a very short time. Their treatment of their members and the way SPJST treats its members is as different as night and day. SPJST is alive with activities for young and old. SPJST lodges have fundraisers to help members in the community. Other fraternal insurance companies do not strive to be part of the community like SPJST does. I’m proud to be a member of SPJST for more than eight years! Leadership is a very important ingredient for the position of director. My years in the military taught me leadership. I have taught leadership courses, as well, for many years. The time I’ve been an agent/manager has helped me understand the insurance industry and what is necessary to make a company profitable.
It has been an enjoyable experience for the last seven years as president of Lodge 157, Lubbock. I have worked with some great people as a delegate at the last convention. I would like your support in the 31st SPJST Convention for District Four Director. Thank you. Fraternally, Larry Capps Lodge 157, Lubbock —SPJST—

Dear Member, Since I became a member of SPJST, I have seen a lot of the growth that has taken place in the last 30 years. I have learned more and more about what fraternalism is really about. I have seen and been a part of some of the changes that have taken place. I hope with the continued leadership of our leaders, that SPJST will continue to grow and be one of the leading fraternals in the state. With the support of the members this can be achieved. Let us come together at this convention with this goal in mind. Fraternally, Randy Gaas Lodge 17, New Tabor —SPJST—
District Three Youth Counselors ask for delegates’ consideration
Dear Delegates to the 31st SPJST Convention, We kindly ask the delegates to review this proposal and consider supporting it. It was submitted to the By-Law and Finance Committees prior to the April 12 deadline. We ask that there be no stipulation on the annual youth camp allocation and districts be allowed to camp where it is most convenient for them. We have also submitted the following ideas to the Finance Committee:
Please consider adding additional funding to the annual camp allocation to compensate for travel to SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. Funding should be added based on distance that each district must travel to camp. Information below is an average

For example, parents drive their
children to Cooper Farm on Thursday (the day camp begins). Then, the parents return home. On Sunday, parents return to Cooper Farm to pick up their children. This is an average of 804 miles for parents of campers in District Three. Even if one set of parents takes the children to camp, and another set of parents picks them up, each set of parents is still traveling an average of 402 miles. With today’s gasoline prices, this is not an easy task for anyone. Because of this, the parents end up staying at camp and serving as chaperones. When this happens, we have an excess number of chaperones (Home Office pays for one chaperone for every five campers). The district then must pay for these extra adults. In 2011, District Three paid for 14 extra adults. If the district rents buses to transport the campers and chaperones, the cost is $50 per rider (or $5,000 total). This cost must be paid by the district, youth club, or individual campers/chaperones. Delegates at the 2008 convention approved that in order to receive the annual allocation, all districts must camp at Cooper Farm. Because of this, we ask that all districts be treated fairly in regards to travel distance and be compensated for mileage based on one vehicle for every five youth attending camp. Based on 2011 youth campers (338), mileage would be paid for 68 vehicles. Costs would be: District One: 78 youth campers – pay for 16 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 76 miles x 55.5 cents = $42.18 x 16 = $674.88
District Two: 91 youth campers – pay for 19 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 170 miles x 55.5 cents = $94.35 x 19 = $1,792.65
District Three: 71 youth campers – pay for 15 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 402 miles x 55.5 cents = $223.11 x 15 = $3,346.65
District Four: 17 youth campers – pay for 4 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 662 miles x 55.5 cents = $367.41 x 4 = $1,469.64 District Five: 19 youth campers – pay for 4 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 228 miles x 55.5 cents = $126.54 x 4 = $506.16
District Six: 23 youth campers – pay for 5 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 156 miles x 55.5 cents = $86.58 x 5 = $432.90
District Seven: 39 youth campers – pay for 8 chaperones’ mileage Average cost: 302 miles x 55.5 cents = $167.61 x 8 = $1,340.88
This would be an additional $9,563.76, based on 2011 camp numbers. These funds can be used at each districts’ discretion for transporting campers (chaperone mileage, buses, vans, etc.) Safety is another big concern. Anyone who has ever attended camp knows that you do not get much sleep there. After spending four days in the heat without much sleep, District Three chaperones/parents face an approximate 201-mile drive home. If funds cannot be allocated to compensate fairly for travel, we ask that there be no stipulation on the annual allocation and districts be allowed to camp where it is most convenient for them. For example, District Three camped at Buffalo Ridge in Hillsboro prior to Cooper Farm being built. The average one-way mileage was 53 miles (compared to 201 miles to Cooper Farm). Prior to Cooper Farm, districts camped for more than 50 years with the District Youth Counselor working with the youth leaders, parents, and youth to find a convenient camp location. Please consider the mileage reimbursement, or please consider going back to doing whatever works best for each district and allowing each district to select their camp location. Fraternally, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor Lynda Novak, Assistant District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Member stresses importance of education
I graduated from Kaplan University on March 10, 2012, in Miami, Florida, in the winter commencement that was Kaplan’s largest number in attendance of about 1,500 graduates. I received my bachelor’s degree in information technology-project management and have worked for CompuCom Systems in Dallas for eight years where I am a project coordinator. I want to stress the importance of education for everyone — no matter what stage you are in life for you can never learn too much or get enough education. It’s great that SPJST supports education through its scholarship program, and I urge all to support that program. Fraternally, John Vrla, President Lodge 130, Dallas —SPJST—
Member seeks apology
Open Letter to the Editor It was with great excitement that I began reading the convention reports from the officers of SPJST in the May 9, 2012, Vestnik. Learning about the exciting things that have been going on in the lodges and at the Home Office is always great to read. But, I was greatly appalled when I realized that these reports where a veiled and shameful act to get delegates to the convention to cast their support for these persons. These reports are to be for information to the membership and to convey to the member the standing, strength, and direction of SPJST, and they were reduced to “campaign ads.” I am asking that all of the members of SPJST join me in demanding those involved in this distasteful act to submit apologies A.S.A.P., with paid political ads (in an appropriate size) in the Vestnik, before the convention convenes. Fraternally yours, Don Fruin Lodge 255, Katy —SPJST—

Dear Members and Friends, The Board of Directors and Staff of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center want to graciously thank you for your donations to help pay off the principle on the building’s current mortgage. This is your museum and again you have come to the challenge of keeping it a viable source of your heritage for generations to come. SPJST Lodge 88, Houston member Mildred Holeman’s challenge to pay off the building mortgage has certainly made us all aware of the importance of the museum. Preservation of memories, a way of life that has given us a work ethic to be proud of, the artistic endeavors of sewing, cooking, and hand work that keep us in awe of their crafts, are all housed in the museum for safe keeping. Mildred’s challenge shows her love for this museum and the board and staff also carry this same feeling. Your generosity shows how much you care that we preserve our ancestral memories to educate future generations. If you have not mailed in your donation for the Challenge Grant, please do so by May 31. Mail to Czech Heritage Museum, 119 West French Avenue, Temple, Texas 76501. All donors’ names will be published in a June Vestnik. We want to include your name. Thank you for all your support, donation, and the trust you have in us at the museum. Don Mears, Board of Directors, and Museum Staff

Lodge 15 Buckholts reports on May meeting
The meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was called to order by President Douglas Williams at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by guest Jesse Pospisil followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members, especially Charlsie Svetlik and Arthur Peevey. All officers were present. We had eight members present and six guests. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. We were so happy to have as our guests Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda and Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and La Verne Vanicek. Jesse spoke to us pertaining to the upcoming convention. He spoke
on some of the things that will be voted on. Frank brought us a poster of the Seaton annual picnic which will be held on the first Sunday in June. It is always a good place to go for some delicious food. Our annual Buckholts Cotton Festival will be on the first Saturday in June, along with the school reunion which takes place in our SPJST lodge building. In old business, we have not gotten all our figures on our expenses for the RVOS insurance claim for all the damages that occurred due to the robbery of our electrical copper wiring in our SPJST lodge building. President Doug stated it should be ready to submit sometime this week. Also, our Join Hands Day project with Buckholts FFA turned out to be quite a challenge, trying to identify some of the streets. It turned out to be a lot more work and a lot more re-

Lodge 4, Hallettsville members join hands to beautify SPJST Cemetery
Lodge 4, Hallettsville adults and youth joined hands on Sunday, May 13, 2012, to place flowers on more than 50 graves at the SPJST Cemetery in Velehrad. Afterwards, Lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinator Annie
Vahalik led the group in a prayer. Those attending peered into the windows of the hall located on the grounds of the cemetery. The cemetery is located on the county lines of Lavaca and Fayette County on a
peaceful rural road. We chose this historical site project so that members from the founding years of SPJST would not be forgotten. Some graves were for babies. Some families are buried there. The cemetery looked
very colorful with the many bunches of flowers on the graves. Fraternally, Annie Vahalik, Fraternal Activities Coordinator —SPJST—

Lodge 39, Bryan joins hands to clean roadways
Dear Readers, Lodge 39, Bryan picked up trash on the side of the road at our lodge for Join Hands Day. I cannot believe how many things people throw out. It looked really bad. We picked up plastic bottles out on the roadside that were as old as us. They do not go away unless someone goes and picks them up. So please use a trash bag in your car or truck and do not litter. Thank you very much from Lodge 39,
Bryan. After the Join Hands Day trash pickup, we had a very nice lunch of sandwiches, chips, and dips. President O’Shields called our meeting to order, and we had some new business about the upcoming convention. We are to read about all the changes coming up and let our delegate know our opinions. Dottie Everett is our delegate, and I know she will do a great job for Lodge 39, Bryan Sincerely, Binnie Roesler, Reporter —SPJST—

from Supreme Lodge Chairman/District One Director Donnie Victorick. Director Bayer then made several comments in reference to the hall. We have made many upgrades to the hall in the last 30 to 40 years. We installed a drop down ceiling and aluminum windows, revamped the bathrooms and made them handicap-accessible, and installed a nice kitchen and a walk-in cooler. We planted trees around the hall and added a new barbecue building. We also hooked up to community water. Some of our older members were in attendance, namely Thomas Novak, Maxine Pavliska, George Zidek, and Henry and Gussie Sralla, just to hame a few. Lodge President Glen Pruski and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Bob Bayer recognized 75- and 50-year
members, Every Day Heroes, and our new members. State Field Representative Don Strickland recognized our lodge sales agents. It was nice to have Don and his wife Sherrie in attendance. Also in attendance was District Attorney Rene Pena. Trey Bielefeld, Roxy Bertrand, and Wendy Pruski put together a PowerPoint slide show that was shown the entire day. It was very nice. SFR Don Strickland set up an insurance display. Many members and friends picked up brochures. Wendy Pruski wrote three applications as a result. We had many referral cards completed. We had a drawing afterwards with three winners selected. The meal was catered by Outlaw Catering of Floresville, Texas. The very nice meal consisted of beef, sausage, cheesy potatoes, and green beans with all the sides. The desserts were brought by the members. I do not remember all of the names, but thank you. For the reception that followed, we had a beautiful cake baked and decorated by Roxy Bertrand. It was
done in all white with the old and new SPJST insignias in color. The cake was served with a nice clear fruit-flavored punch. To all members of Lodge 107, we the members that worked very hard on this historic event were kind of disappointed at the turnout. We could have used more help. We had planned on about 150 members and guests to attend – only 78 showed up. This was an historic event for SPJST. We have 869 members in our lodge at this time. Seems to me that we could have gotten more to come out to such an historic event. We would like to congratulate the ones who came out to celebrate with us, and all of our working members. The lodge would like to thank the following members for all the work they put into this event. Roxy Bertrand, Larry Bertrand Wendy Pruski, Glen Pruski Lucille Novak, Thomas Novak Liz Bielefeld, Trey Bielefeld Polly Bayer, Bob Bayer Oscar Korus
The table arrangements were given as door prizes after the event. Thank you to President Vanicek and District Seven Director Bob Bayer for the door prizes they brought. Gas Pains
By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
Price at the pump drivin’ me insane cain’t fill it up got bad gas pains Nobody wants to bear the blame just pass the buck on them gas pains Run outta gas a deadend lane
ain’t got the dough to ease my pain Guess I could walk it ain't my game I'll limp along on these gas pains
Gave up my steak now rice and beans cain’t afford much more than gasoline Broke down and broke no headway gained spinnin’ my wheels with these gas pains
The blood is black inside their veins oil pirates laugh at our gas pains When they get done our pockets drained run outta gas still got the pain. —SPJST—

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth: ready for camp
Dear Readers, I am so ready for school to be out for the summer. I can’t believe I will be in seventh grade next year. I am ready for vacation. In May, my youth club went to the cemetery and cleaned and placed new flowers on the graves. I like doing things like this for SPJST. Camp is so close I can hardly wait! I am really excited about camp this year. Dillon Narro —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin youth likes big Orel
Dear Vestnik, The Easter egg hunt we had was great. Thanks to Frank, David, Melanie, and Hiram for making it much better. I like the big blow-up Orel SPJST eagle that we had. Everyone had their basket full of eggs that SPJST stuffed. I had stuffed about 400 of them. I really had lots of fun stuffing the eggs for the kids. Then, we gave out prizes, and I got a big metal cross. I liked the cross; I hung it in my room. I can’t wait until next year to stuff more eggs. Sincerely, T.J. Anderson —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin youth stuffs eggs for annual hunt
Dear Vestnik, As this is my last year in the youth club, it was very exciting for me to help stuff eggs. This will be my last time for these wonderful young people—as I and my cousin stuffed more than 100 eggs with different types of candy. I’m also very excited to be graduating this year and my last year in high school as well. I’m ready to get out into this world and explore new places. Sincerely, Brandon Bowen —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Leader: we have a place for you in SPJST
Dear Vestnik, Well, I’m always saying to my youth to write letters, and their response to me was, “Why don’t you have to write them?” So I’m listening to my youth and sending a letter to the Vestnik. First, I enjoy the youth and all of the things we get to do together (even if we are a small group. I’m so blessed

to be able to have the egg hunt each year. We could not have done this without the help from all of my youth. They work very hard stuffing the eggs, and each year, the hunt seems to grow. I would just like to say that no matter how small or big you are, there is a place for you in the youth club. Come join and have some fun. I look forward to another year of fun. Sincerely, Joyce Bowen, Youth Leader —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin youth enjoys float . . . and Hiram’s car
Dear Vestnik, On April 7, the youth had their annual egg hunt. We were blessed to have great weather this year! I would like to thank some of the sweetest people in SPJST. These people are Melanie, David, Frank, and Hiram. Thank y’all so much for coming and helping us! The float brought by Melanie and David was phenomenal (although the beautiful car brought by Hiram was phenomenal as well). This is my last egg hunt with the youth, and I can definitely say it was a great one. Sincerely, Mikhaila Nelson —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin youth: lots of fun stuffing eggs
Dear Vestnik, I am so excited that my graduation day is almost coming up. I bet I will have so much fun and will have lots of fun afterwards. I am so glad that we had a big egg hunt. We got so much candy to stuff and lots of eggs. Boy, that’s a lot of eggs! I could eat all of the candy and be so tall I cold touch everything except for the sky. I am so glad that everyone came to help, and I loved the float. Everyone that came from the mother lodge— thank you for all the help. It was so much fun; I wish we could do it all the time. I loved the egg hunt, and it was lots of fun to stuff all the eggs. Sincerely, Jayden Flores (kindergarten) —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik, As this is my third to last year, I am really thinking of life after SPJST. It was fantastic. SPJST means so much to me. I do not know what I am going to do when I’m out of the youth club. Yours sincerely, J.B. Anderson —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth welcomes Rosie and Daisy
Our charity project was to collect tabs from cans to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. My brother and I collected a lot. We brought them to the meeting. We gave them to our youth leader. We collect them so parents can stay with their kids when they are sick in the hospital, and they can stay at the House for free. We just got two dogs. Mine is named Rosie, and my brother named his Daisy. We are having a lot of fun playing with them. Olivia Zmolik —SPJST—

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club Learns Kolache Making
Since the food category for Youth Achievement Day this year is kolaches, our youth club decided to learn together. Carol Tallas helped teach us while helping us cook them for a bake sale. We thought it was a great opportunity to learn while raising money for our activities. Every family in the group took an order form and was asked to take orders. We thought that we would only
get a few orders but ended up having to make 120 dozen kolaches! We knew making this many kolaches would take a long time so we made all the fillings two nights before. We made cherry, peach, apricot, cream cheese, cottage cheese, prune, poppy seed, and pineapple. It took almost three and one-half hours to make all the fillings. On Saturday, we went to the Taylor
Brethren Church at 4 a.m. and started baking. It seemed to take forever to make so many kolaches; we finished baking at 1 p.m. We learned that baking kolaches takes a long time, and it can get pretty hot in the kitchen. By the way, we ended up making too much filling; we have enough left to make almost 50 more dozen! Because of this, we will be having another bake sale after school is let out.
All of us at Lodge 48 would like to thank the Taylor Brethren Church for letting us use their facilities, and we hope they enjoyed the four dozen kolaches we left them. We would also like to thank Carol Tallas for helping us bake all these kolaches and for being an awesome teacher. Yours truly, Kacie Vanecek —SPJST—

Please take a moment and consider the qualifications of Delisle Doherty for the position of Vice President of SPJST.
His leadership and time management skills are second to none, and his knowledge of business and life insurance are “top shelf.” He has used all of these in his turn-a-round of Districts One and Five over the last two years. Because of his leadership and training skills, he has motivated more agents to write more business in the last year than ever before in his districts. He has increased the number of professional agents in his districts, thus bringing more members and insurance to SPJST. His knowledge of insurance has come to the forefront, with the training he has provided to agents on how to properly select the best policies for clients (not just sell and go), and to maintain proper follow-up and education of the clients to insure their insurance is always meeting their needs.
This is the type leadership and skills that SPJST needs to carry us into the future, and why we are asking you to use your vote for what is best for SPJST, not just because . . . Please join us in supporting Delisle for Vice President. Carita Felbermayer Genevieve Elliott Kerry Herrington C.W. Roberts Mark Childres Don Fruin

Delisle Doherty for Vice President
As a sales agent for SPJST, I am in touch with many aspects of our insurance operations that need improvement and updating. Delisle Doherty can and will accomplish those improvements and updates. Lodge 181, Conroe endorses Delisle Doherty for Vice President. Charles D Toney III, BS, MS, MBA “Chuck” SPJST Sales Agent and Secretary, Lodge 181, Conroe
Important Message, Please Read From Delisle Doherty In the past Vestniks many of the candidates has written about their accomplishments and qualifications. This is very important to help in deciding who the right candidate is for the job, but I think it is equally important to know what the candidates goals are and how they are going to accomplish them. Everyone talks about what we are going to do but has anyone shown how it will be done? Before you vote for anyone from the Supreme Lodge I think it is vital that we know what needs to be done and how it will be accomplished. For SPJST to move to the next level and continue to grow in membership the Supreme Lodge officers need to be held accountable, and need a plan in place to show their accountability. As a candidate I am willing to accept that accountability and show you a plan.

We hear that agents need to become fraternal agents again, but how are they going to do it? I have a plan. We hear the SPJST needs a marketing plan to get our name much more recognizable. As a business and marketing consultant I specialize in product branding. I have a plan. We hear the SPJST needs to support the lodges that are struggling and help to build them into active lodges again. That can be done by creating a Texas company with a strong Czech Heritage. I have a plan. We need to get our technology updated and our communication increased. We talk about doing applications on-line for the agents to speed up our underwriting. This method is flawed. I have the solution. We know we have to get our youth more involved and grow our youth programs . I have a plan.
Many members no longer have an active agent to help support them with their policies. They plan on giving these orphan accounts to active agents to re-connect. But is there a plan in place to succeed with it? I have that plan. I believe it is important for the members to have answers before they make their vote. I have a complete business plan in place and I am willing to share it with anyone who would like to a copy of these goals and plans. Please email me at delisled@sbcglobal.net and I will be glad to share it with you. Put SPJST Business Plan in the subject line. If you do not have email please call me at 832-232-2049 and I will be glad to mail you a copy. I will also make my self available on June 10th to answer any question you may still have, from 6 -8 pm at LaQuinta Inn 1112 South Fort Hood St ,Killeen 76541 It is important that you have answers to help make a your decisions and I am willing to give you my answers. I encourage you to get answers from the other candidates also. This is a paid advertisement by Delisle L. Doherty
