Caitlin Orsak of Lodge 4, Hallettsville Crowned Miss Texas Czech-Slovak

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas held its 10th annual Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen Pageant at the West KC Hall in West, Texas, on Saturday, April 28, 2012. Three young ladies competed for the title of Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen 2012. The competition consisted of personal interviews with three judges, an on-stage interview and question related to their desires to celebrate and preserve their heritage, kroj modeling, and a talent competition. Congratulations to SPJST Lodge 4,

Hallettsville member Caitlin Orsak who was crowned Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen 2012! Caitlin modeled a kroj (Czech costume) from her ancestral village of Novy Hrozenkov, Czech Republic. Much of her kroj was handmade for her by Virginia Svetlik. Her blue apron was an authentic apron purchased in the Czech Republic and is made by stamping wax patterns on white fabric and then dying the fabric blue. The resulting effect is a blue apron with a

State Horseshoe Tournament Winners Announced

SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament was held at Lions Park in Temple, Texas, on Saturday May 12, 2012, with a good attendance. Members as well as non-members showed up to compete in the competition for the top four places. Although not everyone could finish in these positions, all who participated had a great time competing. And, the fraternalism was great for all participants and spectators. Each team pitched 14 rounds. In the end, there was a tie for third and fourth place. These two teams had to pitch one more round to determine who would come in third and who will have to settle for fourth place. The results revealed George Pauling of Lodge 66, Waco and Woody Richards of Lodge 29, Taylor taking fourth

place. Third place went to Travis Russell and Brad Russell (non-members). Second place went to Tim Russell, non-member, and Kyle Crawford of Lodge 6, Cottonwood with 11 games won and three games lost. First place was awarded to Paul Hutchinson and Dennis Dulock, both non-members with 13 games won and one game lost. Thanks to all participants and spectators who supported the participants throughout the day. The day ended in a fraternal way with all participants having a great day of fun while competing for the top position. Fraternally submitted, Chester Jenke, FICF State Fraternal Activities Coordinator —SPJST—

Communit y SPJST Traditions

Hats off to Lodge 24, Cyclone for hosting another spectacular

Mother’s Day barbecue lunch. This is actually a great community service because so many people commented that they are grateful for not having to either cook or go wait in line at a crowded restaurant. So, keep up the great job, Lodge 24 members. And, thanks for continuing this great tradition in the Cyclone community.

100 Years of Greatness This week’s shout out goes to two very special people—my aunt Henrietta (Zavodny) Slavik and my cousin Retta Slavik Chandler. We had the pleasure of visiting and spending some rare time together at Lodge 24, Cyclone on Mother’s Day. Aunt Henrietta —like the Vestnik—is celebrating a very special milestone. She was born just a couple months prior to the when the very first issue of the Vestnik was published in 1912. Aunt Henrietta will celebrate her 100th birthday on June 12. The Vestnik published its first issue on September 1, 2012.

Aunt Henrietta is a longtime member of Lodge 24, Cyclone.

This Week’s Vestnik As we close out this week’s Vestnik, only a few items remain that have not been published. So we are slowly getting through our backlog of items. Thank you for your patience. And, this week’s Vestnik is 32 full color pages — instead of the 40 and 48 that we have had for the past several weeks! So the “SPJST Fraternal Activities and Entertainment” has been returned to its place on the inside back pages. Thanks to all who noticed and inquired about this change.

Correction Please make a note of this corrected information from the local lodge secretary’s listing that appeared in the May 16 Vestnik. Lodge 79’s listing should read: Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Virginia Rebecek 6325 Brianna Circle Corpus Christi, Texas 78414 (361) 816-3128

My beautiful aunt Henrietta (Zavodny) Slavik and the Vestnik have a lot in common. They are both celebrating their 100th birthdays in 2012! This is Aunt Henrietta with her daughter Retta Slavik Chandler and me at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Readers Write

Scholarship recipient appreciates award

Dear Readers, In just a few short weeks, I will graduate from high school. SPJST’s Youth Program has been a major influence on my childhood and as that chapter of my SPJST life closes, I thank everyone who contributed to it. The youth club helped me develop in a way that has me poised to be successful in the future. SPJST has recently generously awarded me with a scholarship, largely due to my involvement in the youth program. I thank SPJST for its contribution to my college education. I am glad that this organization, which has already been so kind to me, will be following me in my next steps of development through this scholarship. Thank you. Fraternally, Samuel Vanicek Lodge 24, Cyclone —SPJST—

Lodge 258, Seguin member pledges to represent all members, lodges in District Seven

Dear Members and Delegates, The 31st SPJST Convention is just around the corner. It is an honor and privilege to have been elected to represent your lodge, and I congratulate you. This shows that your lodge has faith in your decisions that will be made and have placed their trust in you to make the right decisions to move SPJST forward in the next four years. Earlier, I mailed a resume with my qualifications and experience to the delegates of District Seven—and also submitted it to the Vestnik. I hope you have taken time to review these. If you need another copy so that you can review these, please let me know and I will be happy to send you one. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call me (210) 413-3053 or email me at cejenke@gvec.net, and I will be happy to discuss any concerns, comments, or suggestions. I am never

any farther away than a phone call or an email. When elected District Seven Director, I will represent all members of the district and work with all lodges to promote growth for the lodges, the district, and SPJST. When topics come up at Supreme Lodge meetings, prior to making a decision as to how I will vote, I will first evaluate the topic. How will it affect SPJST? Is it beneficial to SPJST? How will it affect the members, and how will it affect local lodges? One topic that has been a thorn in my side is the reassignment of lodges. For many years, I have felt that the members involved in the reassignment should have a voice as to which lodge they want to be a member. If the proposed Article 43, section (g) passes, the guidelines have been set by the delegates for any future reassignments and must be adhered to by all districts. If for some unknown reason, this proposed by-law does not pass, we already have Article 70 on the books for lodge mergers, and I will promote these guidelines for all lodges in the process of being merged. Your support and votes will be appreciated. I am looking forward to seeing and visiting with all delegates on June 10 to 13 in Killeen, Texas. Fraternally, Chester Jenke, FICF Lodge 258, Seguin —SPJST—

Member disappointed with May 9 Vestnik

Dear Melanie, I am sorry to say that I was greatly disappointed by the May 9 issue of Vestnik. And, specifically with the ”Reports” by Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, Vice President Gene McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, and Financial Secretary Roy Vajdak. These are supposed to be reports and are to be nothing else, reports. Every one of these reports end with “ask for your support,” “to re-elect me,” “ask your support.” This is so so unprofessional. Do the other delegates get “free space” also? Where is the information about them? Don’t you think you should run a bio about each candidate running for a position free and with picture also? Shouldn’t these men pay

for this free advertisement they just got? This is only fair. We are a fair, democratic country aren’t we? It is not fair to everyone in the lodge that these men can flash “please support me” in the Vestnik and anyone outside of Temple has to pay for an advertisement. Fraternally yours, Genevieve Elliott Lodge 81, Needville

Editor’s Note: Dear Genevieve, Thank you for your letter. I appreciate you writing and asking these questions. Article 32 (g) of our bylaws states, “Every officer of the Supreme Lodge must publish his convention report in the Vestnik 30 days before the convention. Directors may submit one joint report if they so agree.” Any member (delegates included) can submit articles to the Vestnik at no charge. Items are published according to Article 85. Candidates seeking elected SPJST positions are encouraged to submit their biographies and photos in an effort to inform members and delegates of their intentions and for delegates and members to get to know the candidates. For the upcoming 2012 Convention, the Vestnik has published bios and photos for these candidates: Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek May 9, 2012 Vestnik

The Publication Committee adopted guidelines regarding political endorsements and political advertisements. The Vestnik will accept political advertisements and endorsements. Political candidates wishing to advertise in the Vestnik must be SPJST members. Political endorsements for any elected office (SPJST or other) must be in the form of a paid advertisement in the Vestnik. Individuals will pay the commercial advertisement rate ($6 per column inch); lodges will pay the lodge rate ($2 per column inch). Lodge advertisements for political endorsements must have been voted on and approved by the members in a lodge meeting. All political advertisements and endorsements must be paid in advance. Frank Horak announces candidacy for Supreme Lodge Vice President

Dear SPJST Members After many months of soul searching and prayer, I am announcing my candidacy for Supreme Lodge Vice President. My membership with SPJST started 44 years ago when my first insurance certificate was issued. SPJST is very dear to my heart. I am of Czechoslovakian decent, and my greatgrandparents came to Texas just like so many others looking for a better life. You are very important to the future growth of SPJST. Currently in our country, families are struggling to make ends meet. People who are my age sometimes think of themselves as being invincible – yet we don’t think about those important questions: Will my family be able to cover the cost of a funeral? Will my family be able to financially take care of themselves in case of my death? These are tough questions to ask ourselves but must do so for the financial security of our family. I came to SPJST in May 2007 where I began working in the Insurance Department as Assistant to the Vice President. I worked closely with Home Office staff, District Field Representatives, and sales agents. My duties as Assistant to the Vice President were to process new sales agent applications, data entry, agent commissions, agent license application, continuing education classes for sales agents, and entering new insurance products into our computer certificate program. I am a parttime sales agent for my local lodge. I have a great deal of respect for Gene McBride in his many years of service to SPJST. In October 2010, I chose to apply for State Youth Director, and in November 2010 made the transition. My motivation in earning the State Youth Director’s position was to better myself and work in a more managerial position with SPJST. During my time as State Youth Director, I have been able to provide leadership to the Fraternal Youth Department. Leadership is one vital part of having a successful business. During my time as State Youth Director, I have listened to our youth leaders about the camp application process and how they wanted to update the process online. I did my research and reviewed how other camps were processing camp applications, and with the help of Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, presented the proposal to the Supreme Lodge. With Supreme Lodge approval,

we started working on revamping the applications and setting it up on the SPJST youth website page. The Youth Department is currently processing the online applications. I closely work with my District Youth Counselors, Assistant District Youth Counselors, youth leaders, and parents to make the Youth Program a success. If I am elected to the office of the Vice President, I will work diligently for you, the members, to make the Marketing and Insurance Department a success. I was taught from an early age that customer service is very important to the operation of a successful business. My philosophy to good customer service is – to form a good relationship with you by listening to your feedback, identifying your needs, explaining those options to you, and finalizing a solution. Currently, SPJST provides good products and I will strive to make sure that doesn’t change. It is very important to me that I work for you on a personal level and show you how much you matter to SPJST. We need to research and review new marketing strategies that will appeal to our current membership as well as new members. I await the opportunity to visit with you in the upcoming weeks, and I want to thank you in advance for your support to be your Supreme Lodge Vice President. Fraternally yours, Frank Horak Lodge 80, Holland —SPJST—

Johnnie Krizan announces candidacy for District Three Director

To The Membership of SPJST: With the 31st SPJST Convention fast approaching and having publicly informed the membership of District Three at both the October 23, 2011, and the April 22, 2012, district meetings, I would like to take this opportunity to inform the membership-at-large that I will seek re-election as Director of District Three. SPJST operates as a non-profit fraternal benefit society chartered by the State of Texas Department of Insurance and by virtue of IRS Code Section 501 (c)(8). As your representative, I pledge to maintain this status by emphasizing the need to recruit members who share our chartered purposes and common bond. If our Society continues to maintain our unique and independent nature as it has over the past 115 years, our future seems bright for future generations to come. Let us always be proud of all our accomplishments, our forward looking ideas, our free thinking spirit, and our loyal membership base that makes our Society equal and envy to all. SPJST has been a vital part of my life for over 50 years. Its training programs and community involvement activites has provided me with a wealth of experience and personal enjoyment. The years spent in the youth program, local lodge functions, district activities, and convention sessions have provided me with the leadership ability and knowledge to better serve the Society. Academically, I have a bachelor of business administration degree from Baylor University with majors in accounting and management. My previous work experience has included serving as an accountant for four years at a large construction company, five years at a real estate land development company, and two years at a local certified public accountant (CPA) firm. Currently, I am a self-employed busi-

nessman involved in agriculture, real estate holdings, investments, fraternal life sales, and work full-time for the United States Postal Service as an express mail clerk. The sum of my SPJST involvement, business training, and work experience should qualify me for any position within the Society. It has been a high honor to serve and represent the members and lodges of District Three for the past 15 years. If re-elected, I pledge to continue to be a strong and independent voice, maintain a high fiduciary responsibility, promote as many cost-effective benefits as possible, and try to provide the best return of investment for the membership at all times. By nature, I am a fiscal conservative and will be proud to employ good Czech frugality when necessary. I look forward to serving you again as a I ask for your vote of confidence and support at this convention. Fraternally, Johnnie R. Krizan Lodge 6, Cottonwood —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on May 10, 2012. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, Joan Strunc, Pat Fowler, Eleanora Pelzel, and I arrived around 8 a.m. We started stretching Joan Strunc’s quilt, arranging table and chairs and by then, Irene Prachyl, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Booth, Victoria Vlk, and Martha Ritchey came, and we started quilting. By lunchtime, we had 25 members and two guests – Julius Podhrasky and Joe Ehrenberger. Everyone was visiting and enjoying themselves. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a most delicious lunch. As always, we had many wonderful dishes. Thank you all and thank you to the kitchen crew for the set up and clean up. After lunch, President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Bessie Laznovsky, Patsy Blazek, and Leslie Trojacek and for all our mothers. The minutes were read by Secretary Margaret Martinek, and Treasurer Dorothy Bobalek gave her report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora Pelzel announced our May birthday celebrants—Ann Clagett, Dorothy Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, Ginny Svehlak, and Ella Mae Zmolek.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Ann, Ginny, and President Dorothy. We all signed a card for Ginny Svehlak who had been in the hospital. A card was also signed for Bertha Podhrasky who was in the hospital for a week recovering from a dog bite from her dog that she raised from a puppy. Bertha stressed to never step on your dog’s treat – they will bite you. That is what happened to her. We were glad to see her, and all is healing now. Pat Fowler announced we will quilt our Christmas sewing circle quilt in June; July – we will have a white elephant sale and show-and-tell; August we will quilt for Victoria Vlk; September for Irene Prachyl; October – Eleanora Pelzel; November – the Junior Sokol 2013 Polka Festival quilt; December – we have our Christmas party, and the year is gone. The kitchen committee announced we will need napkins and paper towels. Margaret Martinek volunteered to bring napkins and Olga Krysinski the paper towels. Ann Clagett brought plasticware, and we thank all of you. After all the mix up about our coffee pot after the Mollie B Polka Party, it is all straightened out now, and we have our coffee pot back. Thank goodness for that. Ann Clagett read a thank you note from Libbie Elsik’s daughter Pam Todd thanking us for the card we had sent Libbie, and how much Libbie enjoyed hearing from the Circle. A thank you note was read from Ginny Svehlak for her card.

Her mother and father had five children and three out of the five have had heart problems. Sidney’s brother Joe Zemanek who is 10 years younger than she is just had six by-pass heart surgery. We wish him well, and hope you stay well. Sidney is leaving for the summer to Wisconsin. Her daughter Cathy Vanden Eykel and husband are driving, and Sidney will fly two days later. Have a great summer and look forward to hearing from you, Sidney. Sidney also brought a box of used greeting cards for anyone who wanted to make things out of them such as little baskets. Other News Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger and 11 other friends from Joyce’s nursing school made a trip to visit one of their classmates in Oklahoma City. Georgia also attended the 60th anniversary party of her brother Gene Zakubik and his wife Mary that was given at Sokol Hall. They all had a wonderful time. Dorothy Prachyl and husband Wesley visited their great-grandson Thomas Nix and sister Sara in Bryan. Dorothy said she was tired, but enjoyed every minute playing with them. They played puppet games and that Thomas was so sweet and cute calling her “Granny, Granny, Granny!” Dorothy is also very proud of her two grandsons Andrew and Adam Cole in Colorado. Martha Ritchey’s great-grandson Desmond Johnson started playing tee ball. She went to one of his practices or games, and how cute they are. Desmond was playing first base and a little fellow hit the ball and was running to first base. Everyone started yelling ‘tag him.’ He thought they were yelling tackle him. He threw his glove down and ran to tackle him. How cute these little ones can be. I hope Martha gets to see all of his games. On March 31 in Alvarado, Pat Fowler’s husband Van was elected fire marshall to the North Texas Fire Fighter’s Association. Congratulations! Irene Prachyl is very proud of her daughter Terilyn, her husband Mark, Terilyn’s children Courtney, Brittany, and Zackary, Terilyn’s brother Rodger, and a friend Wade Gossperson. They all rode their bicycles 152 miles in the Muscular Dystrophy Benefit Ride in Fort Worth. Irene and her friend Bernice Kadlubar went to Fort Worth to see them cross the finish line. Can you imagine riding that far? I can’t. Anyway, I can see why Irene was so proud. This really has been a fast school year. Calleigh is already home from college. She has received her life

guard certificate and will work this summer at Sokol swimming pool. Her friend Hannah Spaniel will also work there. Congratulations to my grandson Tanner. He received the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 8 at St. John Catholic Church. I am so proud of him. He will play baseball this summer and start driving on August 19. That means that I will have to pray that much more, but don’t really mind; he is a good kid. Take care, everyone, see you June 14 – we will quilt, have covered a dish lunch, door prize, and little gifts exchange. Georgie Morales Reporter —SPJST—

It was reported that Victor Martin will be having surgery; Elsie Anders is currently in Texas Rehab following hip replacement surgery; and Nettie Naugle had a valve replacement. We hope all of you have complete and speedy recoveries. Our prayers go out to each of you. A beautiful thank you note was read from Mary Ann Kozel for the gift card given to her for the many years of service given as treasurer of the Club. She did an outstanding job. In April, we brought food items for the St. Thomas Food Pantry and had an option to make a monetary donation. I don’t know how many food items were brought, but $90 in cash was received. Thanks, members! As a reminder, this year, we will not be dining out in July, but will have Woody’s Creek Barbecue cater our lunch. All members planning to attend must call President Betty (817) 2469664 ahead of time to let her know so that she can order the proper amount as we will be charged by the plate. Also, remember our meeting will be one week later - July 11 - due to the Fourth of July being on the first Wednesday. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Margaret Sears and Lucille Kret. Door prizes were donated by Lydia Alholm, Linda Horner, Anna Johnson, Rosie Steinman, and Libbie Vrla. We had lots of happy winners. Hostesses for June will be Julie Chasse, Felma Smith, and Elenita Walker. Jo Ann Wilcox invited everyone to the ordination as a Deacon of her son James Albert Wilcox, III at the Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church in Arlington on May 22. The next step is becoming a priest. Congratulations go out to your son and also to you, Jo Ann! May hostesses Alicia Castillo, Lupe Esparza, Marie Keller, Mary Ann Krivanek, and Shirley Martin were thanked. They did a good job. Grace was said, a great luncheon was enjoyed and games were played. A good time was had by all. Pauline, we enjoyed having you so come again. recently. They were treated to dinner by Linda’s brother, Dr. Tim and his wife. Congratulations! Linda said that she was real young when she married. My cousin, Millie Vrla Breden in Illinois had her 89th birthday on May 1, and I always send her a card. I was so surprised to get a thank you phone call from her the following Sunday. Millie said that she loves to read the Vestnik and to hear about all the folks she knows that my sister Georgie and I always write about. Millie is doing fine, said she doesn’t drive any more, but has a son living with her and a granddaughter living across the street so she has transportation at all times. Rosie Steinman and I enjoyed making the trip to Temple with Jerry and Henrietta Milan to attend the “Bondage to Freedom” on April 17. We enjoyed the speaker Zdenek Janik, the reception and social at the SPJST Office, tour of the Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor, and tour of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center across the street which currently is having a Sokol exhibit. It was especially nice to see so many friends of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society. It was a great. Thanks, Jerry and Henrietta. This past week as Lydia Alholm’s guests, her cousins Pauline and Wilma and I enjoyed attending the Arlington Symphony at Johnny High’s Theater. Special guest pianist was Jan Jiracek who was a finalist in the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition here in Fort Worth. The book said that he was born into a German-Czech family of musicians. During intermission, and in going back to my seat, he was in the lobby with a group of people. As they were breaking up to go back in, I stopped to tell him how much I enjoyed his music and mentioned seeing he was from a GermanCzech family, and told him that I was. He got so excited and told me that he was born Germany and his father is Czech. He immediately introduced me to his father who was there. The father asked me if I spoke Czech so we had a nice little conversation in Czech. He asked where my family came from and said he was from Ceske Budejovice. I told him that I have been there several times. I didn’t have time to ask if he still lives there, but the son resides in Vienna. Anyway, this was very exciting for me. Lydia Alholm has been a party-girl lately. First she attended Pauline Morbitzer’s birthday party then went to Wilma Perry’s “Let’s Rock Around the Clock” birthday theme party (Elvis

Presley’s attire) then she went to a surprise birthday party for Mary Jane (Svacek) Kane. For her own birthday, Lydia had two gatherings hosted by friends. I believe that this was Lydia’s 92nd one. Helen Skrasek returned home from spending two weeks in Tennessee and Oklahoma. She spent eight days in Knoxville with granddaughter Dr. Stephanie attending both great-granddaughters’ (Sara and Ella) tennis games, attended Sara’s piano recital where Sara won an award, and attended Ella’s first communion where both of Ella’s grandfathers were in attedance. Helen is most proud of her son Ron of Oklahoma City who recently received the Gold Glazer Award given by the Ex-Students Alumni Association at Texas A&M of Commerce. Of course, Helen attended along with son Gary and wife Debbie and Ron’s daughter and granddaughter, Dr. Stephanie and Sara. Tracy Horn enjoyed her recent trip to Bryan to attend a surprise 70th birthday party for her nephew Edward Luza. Edward thought that he was going to a graduation party and was totally surprised. Tracy said she found

the perfect birthday card for him - one of those musical cards that played “Beer Barrel Polka” when it was opened. She said that the card really went over big. (Note to cousin Millie: Tracy was a first cousin to Helen Vrla who was married to your brother Arnold). My sister Lil Kosarek and I enjoyed a recent day trip to Denton with the senior citizen’s group from Arlington. We went to a horse farm that trains reining horses which was most interesting, ate lunch at a quaint place in Aubrey Texas, got to listen to the One O’Clock Lab (Jazz) Band practice at North Texas University, viewed several of Texas’ First Ladies’ dresses at the Women’s University, had a tour and learned the history of the old courthouse in downtown Denton, and had ice cream on the square. It was such a fun day. Listening to the jazz band was interesting; the instructor always introduced the composer then asked for their comments. These composers knew exactly how they wanted their pieces to be played. Our sympathy goes out to Willie Mae Becan on the sudden death of her daughter-in-law Penny Becan. Penny

Live Well, Work Well

Editor’s Note: Thanks to Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth for sharing “Live Well, Work Well,” a newsletter from the Health Risk Management Department at Higginbothan. This is for informational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice. For further information, please consult a medical professional.

Safe and Fun in the Sun May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention month, the perfect time to brush up on ways to protect your loved ones, since warmer weather means more time spent soaking up the sun. Each year, 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed, making it the most common form of cancer in the United States. The good news is that skin cancer is easily cured if detected early, so doctors recommend that you perform a monthly self-examination. Here’s what to look for: • A skin growth that increases in size and looks pearly, translucent, tan, brown, black or multicolored. • Any brown spot (including moles, birthmarks, etc.) that: * changes color or texture * increases in size or thickness o is irregular in outline * is larger that 1⁄4 inch * appears after age 21. • A spot or sore that continues to itch, hurt, crust, scab, erode or bleed.

• An open sore that does not heal within three weeks.

water the day before, the day of, and after your workout.

• Avoid exercising between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hottest period of the day.

• Wear a hat and sunglasses to reduce exposure to the sun.

• Be aware of the symptoms of a heatrelated illness and take immediate precautions if you begin to feel faint, dizzy, nauseated, are sweating heavily, or experiencing a weak or rapid heartbeat.

Here are a few ways you can protect your skin when spending time outside: • Generously apply a water- resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher whenever outside, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

• Wear breathable, protective clothing, such as a long-sleeve shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when possible.

• Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as the sun’s rays are strongest during this time.

• Use extra caution—and extra sun screen—near water, snow and sand which can reflect and intensify the sunlight. • Avoid tanning beds as the ultraviolet light from them can cause skin cancer and wrinkling.

Outdoor Exercise Ready to move your exercise routine outdoors? As the temperature climbs, so does your risk of suffering from a heat- related illness. Review the list below to stay safe as the mercury rises: • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of

Food Safety Tips for Grilling It’s grilling season! When planning your next outdoor menu (see kebobs recipe below!), one item you’ll definitely want to leave off the plate is foodborne illness—here’s how:

• Wash everything – Before and after cooking, wash all indoor and outdoor surfaces that will come into contact with food. Be especially careful to wash everything that comes into contact with raw meat or poultry and wash your hands often to prevent contamination.

• Marinate safely – If you plan on marinating raw meat, do so in a covered container in a refrigerator, not on the counter. This decreases the risk of bacteria.

• Keep everything covered – Cover all food with tin foil while outside. This keeps insects or bacteria from landing on and contaminating your food. —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth: Cheerleading, Mollie B, SPJST!

Hello, awesome earthling who is presently or in the future reading this. It’s me again! :) Have ya missed me? I have been feeling super awesome lately because of these many super siked totally kewl (and or) awesome things! Here is the first thing. Let’s put it this way. You are reading a letter from a brand new EJH Cheerleader! That’s right — I made the tryouts. It was so much fun. The dance was really hard, but once I got in front of the judges I felt invincible. I tried my best and now I’m a cheerleader. OK. That was my first super siked totally kewl (and or) awesome thing! My second one is this. Recently, I went to a Mollie B Polka Party and I was watching the show then bam! There I am—I was on TV. Unfortu-

nately, fame has not brought fortune. :( All right . . . here is the next thing. At the last meeting in SPJST, we elected officers. Guess what position I’m in? I am the vice president! I’m so happy. I’m sure that will look good in my speech when I run for Queen in a few years. :) Last, but certainly not least, I went to athletics orientation. “What do you do exactly?” You’re most likely asking. Well, here is what we did. Volleyball skills. Basketball skills. We lifted 10 pound weights. We did fast jump roping and lifted three pound weights. We did a thing where we are on the floor and the only thing that touches the floor is your bottom, and we had to take a volleyball and hand it from side to side (my tummy muscles were

a little tired after that). We did some jumping. We did planks, and we ran the bleachers. After all that, we ran a mile. A lot of people quit, but not me. I kept trying even though I swore that I was gonna die. When I crossed the finish line I was the 12th person to finish. I was 12th place out of 78. I think that was pretty good. OMG . . . how could I forget? We got a new truck! It’s a Ford F250 Lariat (that’s the best one you can get). Anyway, thats how exciting my life has been lately. It has been awesome. I can’t wait until I get to tell you about camp. I’m so excited. That’s all folks! Coming to you live from April’s super kewl (and/or) awesome room, this has been . . . Have Some Summer Fun I submitted this information in my newsletter last year, and I wanted to include it again. In today’s world, our children are at arms reach to so many electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, handheld game units . . . you know I can go on and on. Even though youth will be active with YADs and camp, there may be times this summer that they will be reaching for those electronic devices and wanting to sit on the couch and be unsociable. If you are like me, I would much rather see them doing something else that would be creative or involved with an outdoor activity. I am including a few fun websites that might give you some ideas to help entertain and interact with your children, without the electronics. Some

Puppets Bring New Life to Old Czech Songs and Stories If you ever go to the Czech Republic, make plans to see a puppet show and plan on having a great time. Czech puppet theater today is considered the best in Europe and among the best worldwide. Czech puppets started out as simple stick forms which later evolved into hand puppets. Puppets on strings were introduced in 1563. It was the puppeteer's job to bring the puppet to life by manipulating its movement and providing with a voice and personality. By 1750, puppet shows had become an enjoyable art form in the Czech Lands. The Czech puppets were traditionally hand-carved from wood or made from plaster. They represented all kinds of characters ranging from devils, witches and wizards to clowns, kings and princesses. Early Czech puppeteers roamed Central Europe telling stories and entertaining crowds.

Many times families operated travelling puppet theaters. It was a common practice for the puppeteers to pass their skills, scripts and puppets down through the generations. Matej Kopecky was considered one of the greatest puppeteers of all time. His direct descendants still perform in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. In the early 20th century, permanent puppet theaters and puppetry associations were established throughout what is now the Czech Republic. At present in the Czech Republic, there are an estimated 1,000 folk puppet theaters, 2,000 puppet theaters connected to schools and cultural organizations, and innumerable family puppet theaters which are not counted in any official tally. The puppet shows feature the work of modern playwrights as well as traditional folk stories. As a result, the puppet theaters have helped to revive many old Czech songs and stories which had almost been forgotten. SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Beseda Dancers performed at the TCGS event on April 21 in Caldwell.

Registration began at 8:30 a.m., and delicious kolaches, juice, and coffee were served throughout the morning. Guests enjoyed time to visit with friends and family members, prior to the beginning of the day’s activities. TCGS President Charlene Hurta opened the program with a welcome to all attendees, followed by comments by Caldwell Mayor Norris McManus. Reverend John Gantt brought the invocation and lead in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and the Czech National Anthem—Kde Domov Muj. The title of the first presentation of the day was “The Influence of the Catholic Faith and the KJT on the Czech Immigrants in Texas,” which was delivered by Christopher Urban, State President of KJT. He described the early days of Czech immigration, mentioning the slow, difficult travel that the early settlers endured, and the hardships of the priests, who traveled a great deal, administering to members in a number of small towns around Texas. He also explained the history of KJT. Chairman of the TCGS Scholarship Committee Ann Hyzak then presented two applicants for the very first $1,000 TCGS scholarship. One of the qualifications of winning this scholarship was to be in attendance at this event, and to present a talk on “The Importance of Knowing Family History.” Erin Mitchell, granddaughter of TCGS member Bernadette Mitchell, gave a most interesting and well-prepared oral report to the audience, and it was very well received. Samuel Vanicek, son of TCGS member Brian Vanicek, presented his talk by a video presentation, due to the fact that he was representing his school in UIL competition that day,

which prevented his attendance at this event. His talk was well-presented as well, and the audience was equally impressed with his presentation. Because of the fact that the qualifications of both candidates were almost identical, both students were presented with $1000 scholarships from TCGS. A delicious lunch, catered by Dave and Jerry’s, consisting of normal picnic fare - fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, rolls, cookies, and tea was enjoyed by the entire group. Dave even surprised us with sauerkraut soup! The afternoon session was kicked off by a superb presentation of the authentic, Czech dance—beseda, which was performed by the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Beseda Dancers. It was easy to see that the attendees enjoyed this intricate dance, by the toe and finger tapping of many in the room. The presentation by Reverend James Hejl, pastor of the Taylor Brethren Church, was entitled “The Influence of the Brethren Church on the Czech Immigrants in Texas.” This presentation centered on the history of the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church, beginning with Jan Hus, and with his influence on the earliest Protestant immigrants in Texas and with the preachers who served them. Reverend Hejl’s warm, friendly presentation was enjoyed by everyone in attendance. TCGS First Vice President Patrick Janis followed Reverend Hejl with his talk on “Road Maps Around Your Genealogy Brick Walls.” The presentation was full of sound advice and suggestions from one who has been working with genealogy problems for many, many years. A number of questions from the audience were answered by Patrick, and many felt the urge to continue with family research,

due to his tips and comments. The last event of the day was a time set aside for those, who had reached brick walls, to get help from several genealogists on hand. Computer help was available, internet search sites were accessed, and the research books, maps, and charts in the bookroom were also utilized. TCGS is grateful to Sallie and Wayne Wendt and Arnold Pechal, who tirelessly haul their vast collections of research books to every TCGS event for attendees to use. A live auction for three gift baskets was conducted by Henry Holubec, with help from able assistants, Nancy Holubec and Charlene Hurta. The money raised from this auction will be used for the procurement of a World War II Army Jeep, which is being sought by TCGS. The day ended after announcing the winners of the door prizes and silent auction items. Submitted by, Nancy Machu SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—
