Honoring Dad and Our Flag
It’s Convention Week, and almost 300 delegates are gathered at the
Killeen Civic and Conference Center in Killeen, Texas, from Sunday, June 10 to Wednesday, June 13 for an intense review of SPJST’s bylaws and operational policies and procedures. Thanks to all delegates who served at this 31st Convention. It’s an honor to be a delegate, but it’s also a significant responsibility. Your service to our fraternal is appreciated. Next week’s Vestnik will announce results from the convention elections, and the June 27 Vestnik will be our post-convention issue that will include by-law changes and all other convention actions.
Flag Day History On June 14, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19-year-old teacher at Stony Hill School, placed a 10-inch, 38-star flag in a bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance. This observance, commemorated Congresses adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. This observance was also the beginning of Cigrand’s long years of fervent and devoted effort to bring about national recognition and observance of Flag Day. The crowning achievement of his life came at age 50 when President Wilson, on May 30, 1916, issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day. Then in 1949, President Truman signed an Act Of Congress designating the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day. On June 14th, 2004, the 108th U.S. Congress voted unanimously on H.R. 662 that Flag Day originated
in Ozaukee County, Waubeka Wisconsin. —From The National Flag Day Foundation
Happy Father’s Day! Wishing all fathers and fathers-tobe a wonderful Sunday, June 17— Father’s Day! May it be a relaxing and special day surrounded by those who love. CHM Challenge Grant Have you participated in the Czech Heritage Museum’s Challenge Grant? If so, thank you! We will recognize you in the June 27 Vestnik. If you have not sent in your $10 or more donation, then please do so today. See more information on page 13 of this week’s Vestnik.
Clarification The May 23 Vestnik featured a Moravian Barbie doll that was handmade and dressed (cir. 1980s or 1990s) by the late Mrs. Joe (Ella) Marusak of Ennis, Texas. The doll was given to Carolyn Nemec of Dallas at that time. Carolyn (at age 96) donated it to the Czech Heritage Museum on Saturday, May 19, 2012.
Spill the Beans Why they say that . . . In today’s society, it means to let a secret or private information be revealed. This is based on an old voting system by the Greeks where they had a voting bag. Members of the group would drop either a white bean (yes) or a dark bean (no) into a bag to vote on a new member. When a clumsy person accidentally dropped the bag, showing all the beans (votes) it was said that he “spilled the beans,” thus revealing the secret votes to all. —SPJST—

Frank Horak withdraws from Vice President election
Dear SPJST Delegates, During this past weekend, I had some time to speak to a couple of my youth members. They expressed their feeling wanting me to stay as their State Youth Director. Taking the time to analyze my options, I have to follow my heart and what it is telling me. I am withdrawing my name from the election for Supreme Lodge Vice President. In the past year, I have been very blessed to make so many new friendships within the SPJST Youth Program. I started this journey a year and a half ago and want to follow through with the goals that I have set for the SPJST Youth Program.
Thank you for your time and support. Fraternally yours, Frank Horak Lodge 80, Holland —SPJST—

#3 Washtub
By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
To a two-year old a #3 washtub full of water is like a beach at the ocean waiting to be waded into sloshed around in as a first exploration into new worlds a hose is a waterfall that drips on his hands and feet and sprays laughter into his face and smiles across his lips
as he plays with water and hose he thinks big thoughts pretending he is older stronger and bolder venturing into new territory leaving wakes of water as he goes
will he remember this when he sees the real ocean for the first time thinking back to summer days on grandma’s patio when the heat of the day was cooled off by water splashed on toes and clothes he sailed away that day in dreams of conquering much larger things his long journey into manhood galvanized by a #3 washtub

riding with the wind in your hair feeling the power of the poem beneath you
a poem will gallop if spurred on or have a nice easy lope for more gentle riding

2011-2012 District Two King Expresses Heartfelt Thanks
Dear Readers, It has been a great year serving as King of District Two! I feel blessed to have been selected king. I have to send out a big, big, big—I mean big—thank you to David and Melanie for all of the hard work they did this past year! From making and decorating the floats to entering all the parades and letting my queen and I ride in the Vettes. I would like to say what great drivers we had for all of the events! Also, a big thank you to my district youth counselor, Patsy Koslovsky, for encouraging me last year to write a speech and run for king. I didn’t think that I would make it to State, much less getting first runner-up at State. Patsy helped
me discover something that I thought I didn’t have. Also, I have to say thank you to my youth leader, Lynette Talasek, and the mother lodge of Seaton for the encouragement and the heartfelt thank yous for being their king. I have to say that I had the best duke
in the state—Michael Hoelscher. There is never a dull moment with him. And, I can’t forget my wonderful, gracious parents . . . for putting up with all the times that I said my speech in front of them. They have showed me and led me to greater things in life! Wow, there are so many people to thank, and I don’t want to leave out anybody, so thanks to all of those who have been there for me and have helped me this year serving as king. Parts of Speech Z jm no ? Pronoun
You remember that in the study of English, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are seven types of pronouns:
1. Personal — já, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my, and vy. 2. Possessive — můj, tvůj, jeho, její, náš, váš, etc. 3. Demonstrative — ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono. 4. Interrogative — kdo? co? který? jaký? čí? 5. Relative — který, jenž (who, which, that), kdo, co 6. Indefinite — někdo, některý, nějaký, kdo-si, co-si. Quantita-

tive pronouns: každý, všechen; sám, sama, samo, týž, táž, též — latter all expressing identity. 7. Negative — nikdo, nic, žádný .
8
,
1. Personal pronouns The longer forms — mne, mně, tebe, tobě — are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms — mi, mě, tě, ti — are used when no stress is needed, and are used after the stressed word. Psal mi. Znáš mě? On mi psal. Ty mě znáš? There is a special reflexive pronoun — se — for all three persons, singular, and plural. Example: Já se mýji. On se mýje. My se mýjeme. .

Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen Participates in Ennis
2012 Miss Texas Czech Slovak Queen Caitlin Orsak of Lodge 4, Hallettsville participated in the National Polka Festival Parade in Ennis on Saturday, May 26, 2012.
Let us note here an important spelling rule: When the masculine sex only is involved, the pronoun is oni. When both sexes are involved, the pronoun is still oni. When only the female sex is involved, the pronoun is ony. Modifying adjectives and verbs must agree with these endings. Example: Ženy donesly Chlapi donesli všichni (both sexes) donesli.
After prepositions, of course, the j becomes ň — do něho, k němu, s ní, s nimi, etc. .
8
,
2. Possessive pronouns correspond to the personal pronouns.
For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is můj (má, mé); and plural — náš.
For the 2nd person singular, it is tvůj (tvá, tvé); and plural váš (vaše).
17
For the 3rd person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine, it is její; and for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich for all three genders. It also remains invariable. .
8
,
3. Demonstrative pronouns — ten, ta, to, tento, tenhle.
Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for onen (yonder, that one). The gender, of course, determines which you use. .
8
,
4. Interrogative pronouns — kdo, koho, komu, o kom, kým; co, čeho, čemu, o čem, čím? pro co, proč, nač, zač. který, jaký — the distinction between these two is not always strictly observed. .

Co is also used colloquially, as is Od té doby, co . . . ; Lidí, co tam byli . . . Jenž is used mostly in literary style. In speech, it is replaced by který. Instead of muž, jehož znám, we say muž, kterého znám.

6. Indefinite pronouns někdo, některý, nějaký, někde, někdy; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, čí-si; also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jaký-koli, kterýkoli; and the prefix lec-: leckdo. Každý may be used only with countable objects; všechen for uncountable objects. In the plural, všichni does duty for both countables and uncountables.

“Two Became One—The Perfect Pair” to be held June 16 in Caldwell
The Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) invites all Czechs and friends of Czechs to its summer conference, which will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Coffee, juice, and kolaches, along with entertainment by Henry and Susan Machicek, will help to get everyone in the mood for a Czech-type day. Since June is the month of weddings, we will witness a true, Czech wedding that was held in the Czech
Republic in 2009, when Anne Hyzak and Michelle Hyzak present “A Family Wedding in the Czech Republic.” Traditions are closely adhered to in the Czech Lands, and many of those traditions will be reviewed during the presentation. Along with other references to weddings, such as music and photos of War Bridal Couples, another special guest, Tresa Tatyrek will offer two sessions on using the extensive search engine, Family Search, to unveil facts about our ancestors. This promises to be a very enlightening presentation and after hearing the tips, she will offer attendees an opportunity to follow up on her suggestions in the Book Room. The Book Room will be available for everyone’s research projects and will be manned by genealogists with experience and a willingness to help you with your Czech genealogy. You are invited to bring an item for the silent auction that will be held during the day. The silent auction is a popular part of every event, and the receipts from it are being set aside for the purchase of an Army Jeep, which will be displayed in the Czech Veterans’ Museum at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. A Czech meal consisting of roast beef will be served at 12 noon. And in the afternoon, we will be treated to a special surprise. For further information about this event, please contact Bennie Stasny (512) 497-6007 or email her blstasny@aol.com. We look forward to seeing all of our members, as well as many who have never attended, at this event. Fraternally, Nancy Machu Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

Czech professors research history rural schools and emigration
A visit by three professors from the University of Pardubice in the Czech Republic on Thursday, May 3, 2012, to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center Library was a pleasant and welcome surprise. Karel Rydl, Ph.D., vice-rector professor, PhDr. Petr Vorel, CSc. Dean, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, and Professor Milena Lenderova spent the afternoon at TCHCC following a history conference at the University of Texas in Austin and before their scheduled trip to New York before returning to the Czech Republic. On their way to La Grange, they drove through Praha, Novohrad, stopped at the Komensky school site and then through Moravia. In La
Grange, Janis Hrncir gave them a tour of the Texas Czech Music Museum and the TCHCC Museum and Library building. When they discovered the wealth of resources in the TCHCC Melnar Library, they quickly began their research. While they were in the library, Melissa Pavlik came for some help in translating the only letter that was sent to her great-grandmother from a daughter that did not emigrate. Assisted by Janis Hrncir, the professors researched the Komensky and Moravia schools. They were also interested in the communities of the early Czech settlers that came to Texas. In a phone conversation with TCHCC President Retta Chandler, Dr. Rydl expressed interest in bringing University of Pardubice Czech students to TCHCC next year to do more research. The University of Pardubice is located east of Prague in the town of Pardubice. Since 1874, the Great Steeplechase (Velká Pardubická) has taken place there every autumn. The University offers bachelor’s, master’s and Doctoral degree study programs in over 100 specializations. —SPJST—

Massacre and Destruction of Lidice Part 1
For centuries, Lidice was an ordinary agricultural Czech village, which belonged to the Buštehrad manor, located in a shallow valley of the Lidice Creek in the Kladno district some 20 km west of Prague. The village is today, a quiet town that lies adjacent to valleys and meadows, with a few stone ruins of a farmhouse and church, and a striking bronze sculpture of children. What happened to Lidice on June 10, 1942, shocked the entire world: the German government announced that it had destroyed the small village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, killing every adult male and some 52 women. All surviving women and children were then deported to concentration camps, or if found suitable, were “Germanized.” The Nazis then proudly proclaimed that the village of Lidice, its residents, and its very name, were now forever blotted from memory.
Before destruction
After the Munich Agreement of September 1938, Hitler’s troops occupied the ethnic-German border regions of Bohemia and Moravia (the Sudetenland). Soon afterward, Hungary received territory in southern Slovakia and Ruthenia. Czechoslovakia ceased to exist in March 1939 when Hitler occupied the rest of the Czech lands, and the remaining part of Slovakia became a Nazi puppet state. Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia had tragic consequences for Lidice. In order to suppress the growing antiFascist resistance movement, security police chief SS Obergruppenfuhrer Reinherd Heydrich was appointed deputy Reichs-protektor in September 1941. During his short reign of terror, 5000 anti-Fascist fighters and their helpers were imprisoned. The courts working under martial law were kept busy, and the Nazis

even had people summarily executed without a trial in order to spread fear throughout the country. So many people throughout the Sudetenland died on the scaffold from Heydrich’s persecution, that he earned himself the nickname the “Hangman.”
The Czech leaders in exile who made the decision to kill Heydrich - Col. Frantisek Moravec, Gen. Sergej Ingr, Edvard Benes, and Gen. Rudolf Viest.
Edvard Beneš, leader of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, together with František Moravec (head of Czechoslovak military intelligence), organized and coordinated a resistance network. Emil Hácha (third President of Czechoslovakia, 1938 to 1939), Prime Minister Eliáš (Czechoslovak general and politician and Prime Minister of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, April 27, 1939 to September 28, 1941), and the Czech resistance also acknowledged Beneš’s leadership. It was decided by Edvard Beneš, leader of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, together with František Moravec other political and military
leaders in Paris and London that some action must be taken if they wanted to retain the leadership of the exiled movement under their control. That action was to be the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.
Operation Anthropoid The most significant act of resistance was the assassination of SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, “The Butcher of Prague.” The mission codenamed ‘Operation Anthropoid’ was to be carried out by seven Czech patriots Adolf Opálka, Josef Bublík, Jan Kubiš, Jaroslav Švarc, Jan Hrubý, Josef Valčík, and Josef Gabčík - who had trained with Polish forces in Britain. The ambush took place on May 27, 1942 as Heydrich drove to his office.

Flag Day recognizes the “birth” of the American flag, when on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress officially established the flag of our new nation.
Many historians believe that the first American flag was designed by Congressman Francis Hopkinson and sewn by Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross. The original American flag consisted of 13 stripes alternating red and white, and 13 white stars in a blue field which represented the “New Constellation” of 13 colonies. Our flag’s colors are also symbolic. Red signifies hardiness and valor; white stands for purity and innocence; and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
