Heritage and History - Hand in Hand Sammy Hoggard • Lodge 202, Jourdanton 2012 Flag Day Essay Contest Winner
Heritage is our background that traces back for ages and interprets who our people are. I believe we can celebrate it by remembering what our ancestors did for us, even making the ultimate sacrifice to help build and protect our country. Preserving our history is an important part of who we are because it is a reflection of our heritage and tells the story of our ancestors. Celebrating our heritage and our history also helps us gain a better understanding of it, providing us with stories about how our land was founded and how our culture has been formed into today’s society. Although culture and history go hand in hand, they can provide very different information about the land and our forefathers. Even so, we can still celebrate them together, whether it’s learning about how our heritage was built or supporting our troops who are fighting Sammy reads his to maintain our freedoms. essay at the 31st In SPJST, we celebrate our American her- SPJST Convention in itage by honoring the flag at every meeting as Killeen. well as having a moment of silence for those protecting our freedoms. We participate in Flag Day ceremonies and frequently work with veteran organizations on community service projects. We preserve the history of our Czech ancestors and their contribution to Texas and America in our own museum so that future generations can understand the amazing challenges our ancestors faced. It is simple acts like these that express our American pride and our patriotism. We pray for those at home and across the seas, serving their country and preserving our American way of life. We honor and support veterans for protecting our American freedoms. Throughout the nation, we celebrate our American heritage with our national holidays which encourage citizens to gather their families to remember the freedoms we enjoy. We are very privileged to have many freedoms such as freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. Having gender equality is also a freedom we have and all of these are guaranteed because of people willing to risk their lives to protect the American dream. I think the best way to celebrate our American heritage is to be thankful and show our appreciation to our veterans, troops, and leaders by providing them the respect they have earned with their unselfish giving of their time and talents, often risking their lives and limbs. It is everyone’s duty to record our history and pass on this heritage to future generations to ensure the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights are honored and preserved for many years to come.

Gre at Vestnik Youth Club Ide a
Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club held a contest during the past year to en-
courage youth to write letters to the Vestnik. For each letter that a youth wrote, his or her name was entered into a drawing that was held at the end of the youth year. The contest worked as many youth club members submitted articles and pictures throughout the year. Thanks, Lodge 25 youth leaders, for coming up with this contest. And, thanks, youth for your letters. All youth clubs (and lodges, too) are encouraged to adopt this great idea. Thanks, Lodge 25 Youth Club, for your efforts and all of the submissions. Keep up the great work!
Convention The 31st SPJST Convention has come and gone. It was a successful four-day event that began on Sunday, June 10 with a Howdy Party and ended on Wednesday, June 13 following elections of state officials and district directors and standing committees. A total of 260 delegates deliberated By-Law and Finance Committee recommendations. All convention results will be published in next week’s June 27 Vestnik. Thanks to all delegates for their dedication. Thanks to all committee members and everyone else who helped with the convention for their work and preparation. It is appreciated. Special thanks to the delegates for reelecting me as Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication. I look forward to another exciting four years! And, start making plans for the 32nd convention in 2016 to once again be held in Killeen, Texas, as approved by the delegates.
Youth Achievement Days Youth Achievement Days (YAD) begin this Sunday, June 24 in District Three at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and in District Five at Lodge 88, Houston. Best wishes to all youth competing in these wonderful events. Your Age by Chocolate Math Thanks to Mark Rebecek of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi for sharing this chocolate calculator. The Hershey Man knows your age! This is pretty neat. It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read. Be sure you don’t read the bottom until you’ve worked it out.
1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once, but less than 10). 2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold). 3. Add 5.
4. Multiply it by 50.
5. If you have already had your birthday this year, add 1762. If you haven’t, add 1761. 6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.
You should have a three-digit number. The first digit of this was your original number (i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week). The next two numbers are your age! This is the only year (2012) it will ever work so spread it around while it lasts. —SPJST—

Birthday Club Sisters of Lodge 88, Houston Visits Kemah Boardwalk
On June 6, 2012, we—along with our guests—boarded a precinct bus and headed out to the Kemah Boardwalk. On the way to Kemah, our friendly bus driver Lisa surprised us by making a stop at the Space Center to see the Space Shuttle Replica. Then, we went on to Kemah where we had a wonderful lunch at Landry’s Seafood House. After lunch, some of us rode the train while others walked around the boardwalk and looked at the shops and watched the boats.
At 2 p.m., we started back to the lodge, but once again, our bus driver had another place she wanted to show us. She took us to the historical marker where General Santa Anna had surrendered. Then, we drove through the Washburn Tunnel and came back to the lodge. All of us had a very enjoyable day. —Submitted by Bette Hurta —SPJST—

In Memoriam
In Memory of Rudy Minarcik, Jr.
RM “Rudy” Minarcik, Jr. left this world on May 22, 2012, before we were ready to let him go at a very young 84 years. Rudy was born in Fayetteville, Texas, to Rudolph and Clara on September 15, 1927. He has been a resident of Houston Rudy Minarcik, Jr. for the majority of his life. Rudy was a graduate of Fayetteville
High School and a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie class of 1951. After a short stint in the army and reserves, Rudy was ready to tackle the world. Rudy chose the marketing field as his occupation and held a variety of positions in marketing and sales, both “hoofing the streets” doing cold calls, to senior management. Rudy was always selling something and was known for his persistence and candor. It was said that he could sell snow cones to an Eskimo or socks to a man with no feet. Rudy was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a founding member of Men’s Club of St. Augustine, lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge 172,
VӖSTNÍK
Pasadena member, RVOS, Catholic Life, and member of the Texas A&M Former Students and 12th Man Foundation. Life was not all work and no play as Rudy met the love of his life in Rose Marie Blaha, and they married October 2, 1952. This partnership produced five children, 16 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Those left behind to cherish his memory and love, are Rose Marie, his partner and best friend for the past 60 years; Rhonda (Bill) Edwards, their children, Angie (Aaron) Baldwin (Will and Emory), Jon (Kim) Edwards, Melanie (Dan) Fletcher, and Lindsey Edwards, Renee Oppegard (Gary deceased), their children, Erik, Amber (Craig) Boutwell (Garrett) Aubrey Oppegard, Ross (Teri), their children, Lauren (Chris) Shrum (Henry), Jeremiah (Lindsey) Minarcik (Wyatt), Courtney Minarcik, Alison Minarcik, Russell (Cindy), their children, Jennifer (David) Juel, Justin Minarcik (and Logan), Roslyn (Duke) LeRibeus, their children, Lance, Jackson and Lacy Lereibus; sister Maxine (Alex) Wrobleski; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins; and too many friends to count. A handshake with Rudy and you were a friend for life. We will all miss and cherish that booming voice when he would introduce himself, “Rudy,” “Minarcik,” Aggie Class of 51, his smile, his hugs, his encouragement to be the best, and of course, his proud Czech heritage and his Aggie spirit. His spirit and love will live on as well as his burning desire to BTHOTU. Whoop! Viewing was at 5 p.m. followed with a rosary Friday, May 25 at 7 p.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Rite of funeral mass was on Saturday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Houston. —SPJST—
Resolution of Sympathy
We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Novy Tabor, No. 17, New Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, STANLEY F. MRNUSTIK, age 86 of Caldwell, who passed away peacefully at his home, Saturday, May 19, 2012. The family received guests from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday evening, May 21 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home. Service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 Stanley Mrnustik at New Tabor Brethren Church near Caldwell with Reverend David Johnson, and Reverend Tony Taylor officiating. Burial followed in New Tabor Cemetery. Military honors were under the Auspices of Caldwell VFW Post No. 4458. Stanley was born August 30, 1925, in Caldwell to parents Frank G. Mrnustik and Albina (Maresh) Mrnustik. A 1942 graduate of Caldwell High School, he was soon called to serve his country in the Pacific theatre of World War II. He earned two Bronze Stars in battle liberating the Philippines, and took part in the occupation of Japan following that country’s surrender. After his military service, he attended the University of Texas at Austin entering the Plan II Liberal Arts Honors program, and received his bachelor of arts. He also completed his master’s degree in education from University of Texas. He returned to Caldwell and began his life’s work dedicated to educating the children of Burleson County. He is remembered by generations of Cooks Point and Caldwell students for 40 years of tireless devotion to learning and discipline. The first 20 years of his career, he was principal and seventh/eighth grade teacher at a four-room country school in the Cooks Point community. He taught at Caldwell Middle School for two more decades after the Cooks Point school closed. “Unk” was a lifelong resident of Caldwell and, reflecting his strong Christian faith, a lifetime member of New Tabor Brethren Church where he was very active as a Sunday School Teacher, choir member, and an Elder,
and served for many years on the Sunday School Union Board, and as an officer for the Junior Division of The Mutual Aid Society. He was a member of VFW Post No. 4458. He was also a longtime member of SPJST Lodge 17, Novy Tabor where he was serving as treasurer. Proud of his Czech heritage, he was involved in various other Czech organizations, starting during his time at UT. Most recently, Stanley was involved with the Burleson County Czech Heritage Society and Museum. He will be remembered as a loyal fan of the Texas Longhorns. He treasured time spent farming, ranching, and taking care of the cows, and also enjoyed raising Boston Terrier puppies. A man of strong conviction and great faith, Stanley was not known to “put up with any foolishness” in the classroom. He made a lasting impression on many. The psalmist reminds: “Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” Psalm 90:12. Mr. Mrnustik was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law C.D. Henry; and his nephew’s wife, Diana Henry. Stanley is survived by his loving family, sister Evelyn M. Henry of Caldwell; nephew George Henry; great-nephew Travis Henry; and greatniece Joanna Henry, all of Austin; and by numerous cousins and other relatives and friends. Serving as pallbearers were Travis C. Henry, Jeff Garbs, Barney Homeyer, Fred A. Surovik, Jr., Donnie Victorick, and Pete Wemmert. Honorary pallbearers were Marvin Chlapek, Wilfred Hildebrand, Elwood Moore, Richard Taylor, Kverin R. Urbanovsky, and Leroy Zavodny. The family requests that memorial gifts be offered to New Tabor Brethren Church in Caldwell, Texas, or the charity of your choice. Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club reports on June meeting, activities
Dear Readers, Our meeting was held last Sunday, June 10, 2012. We had a great attendance considering it has been a busy month with several outside activities going on. The Dvorak, Tignor, and Sullivan families all attended the 2012 Sokol Slet held in Dallas this weekend, but they were able to get back to Ennis in time for our meeting. Both families all placed at the Slet, and we are so proud of them. May has come and gone, but sweet memories remain. The National Polka Festival in Ennis is especially memorable because we are proud to announce that Jake and Jessica Holland, both members of Lodge 25, were crowned the National Polka Festival

I enjoy the festival because there is so much to do, and I get to see so many friends and make new ones as well. It’s always so nice to hang out with Rose and Mary Steinman. Mary, I hope you had a wonderful birthday (she’s my birthday buddy - same day, same year)! See you all at YAD! Our June meeting was filled with excitement about the upcoming Youth Achievement Day (YAD) that will be held in Fort Worth at Lodge 92 on Sunday, June 24. Everyone has been working hard on their projects and talents. Our lodge is so proud to be able to send two queens and one king from Ennis. Good luck to all of you! This past year, we held a contest as an incentive to encourage our youth to write letters to the Vestnik. For each letter a youth wrote, his/her name was entered each time into a drawing at the end of the year. Austen Holland was this year’s winner. We have decided to continue this contest so everyone keep up the great work!

Massacre and Destruction of Lidice
Part 2 Continued from June 13, 2012, Vestnik.
For centuries, Lidice was an ordinary agricultural village, which belonged to the Buštehrad manor, located in a shallow valley of the Lidice Creek in the Kladno district sone 20 km west of Prague. The village is today, a quiet town that lies adjacent to valleys and meadows, with a few stone ruins of a farmhouse and church, and a striking bronze sculpture of children.
What happened to Lidice on June 10, 1942, shocked the entire world: the German government announced that it had destroyed the small village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, killing every adult male and some 52 women. All surviving women and children were then deported to concentration camps, or if found suitable to be “Germanized,” sent to the greater Reich. The Nazi’s then proudly proclaimed that the village of Lidice, it’s residents, and its very name, were now forever blotted from memory.
The sleepy town of Lidice had been targeted because the Gestapo in Kladno had intercepted a letter belonging to a local family by the name
VӖSTNÍK
of Horák, who had a son in the Czech army in Britain. This letter was labeled as “suspicious,” and the ensuing action resulted. On the morning of June 9, 1942, ten trucks filled with Security Police rolled into the small town of Lidice in the Kladno district. All men of the village were rounded up and taken to the farmstead of the Horák family on the edge of the village. Mattresses were taken from neighboring houses and stood up against the wall of the Horáks’ barn. Shooting of the men commenced at about 7 a.m. At first, the men shot in groups of five, but the SS commanders thought the executions were proceeding too slowly and ordered that 10 men be shot at a time.

Horák Farm - Site of Executions
By 22.00 on the 9 June 1942, Gestapo agents from Prague were joined in Kladno by two companies of police in battle-dress, and a squad of Security Police. The Security Police were under the command of SSHauptsturmfuhrer Max Rostock, who would carry out the executions. While the extermination squad dealt with the men, other gangs went round with cans of petrol firing the buildings. Later that evening, the Germans sealed off the village. By noon the next day, in an orchard, as John Bradley put it, “seventeen rows of corpses in bloody clothes, with shattered skulls, brains and guts spilling out, lay on the ground in batches of ten.” On 11 June 1942, trucks carrying 30 Jews from Theresienstadt transit ghetto arrived in Lidice and began the digging of a common grave for the men executed the day before. Military police ransacked the homes once again and took anything of value. All farming tools were taken and cattle were herded up. Anything of the remotest value was taken. Any still-standing walls were blown up. Bulldozers flattened the ruins, uprooted the fruit-trees, and filled in the lake and even diverted the stream. Ploughs were driven back and forth across the acres of rubble, so that no

recognizable outline should remain, and when all was done, they put up a high barbed wire fence around the site with notices in Czech and German which read:
82 died in Chelmno, six died in the German Lebensborn orphanages, and 17 returned home.
“Anyone approaching this fence who does not halt when challenged will be shot.”
The women of Lidice were no more spared than the children of the village. A few were executed with the remaining men of Lidice in Prague on the night of the 16th of June. When the other women and the children were separated, nearly 200 women were transported to Ravensbruck; four of them, heavily pregnant, were allowed to give birth to children they would never see. After three brutal years of treatment, only a handful of the Lidice women returned home.
School children from Lidice
In the village, the dead were left lying where they fell, and the newly brought out soon-to-be victims had to first walk past them and stand in front of them. The firing squad always took two steps back, and the scene of horror repeated itself. The men were not blindfolded and were taken to the place of execution without bonds. This spectacle continued until the afternoon hours when there were 173 dead bodies lying in the Horák farm orchard. The next day, another 19 men who were working in a mine, along with seven women, were sent to Prague, where they were also shot.

those from Lidice. All that was left of Lidice was a great brown blotch of broken rubble, obscene and sterile amid the growing crops. The re-establishment of the village began soon after the liberation of Czechoslovakia in May 1945. The area also includes a statue of a woman mourning at the grave site and a statue of a mother with children located on the foundations of the original school.

The death toll resulting from the effort to avenge the death of Heydrich is estimated at 1,300. This count includes relatives of the partisans, their supporters, Czech elites suspected of disloyalty, and random victims like Sources: www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=lidice; http://www.timemoneyandblood.com/HTML/posters/br itish/lidice.html;http://www.livingprague.com/lidice.htm; http://www.holocaustresearchproject.org/nazioccupation/heydrichkilling.html

Eighty-eight Lidice children were transported by bus to Lovosice located in the area of the former textile factory in Gneisenaustreet of Lodz on June 13, 1942. Their arrival was announced by a telegram from Horst Boehme’s Prague office which ended as follows: “These children are only bringing what they wear. No special care is desirable.” Shortly after their arrival in Lodz, officials from the Central Race and Settlement branch chose seven children at random to be “Germanized.” Nazi SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Adolf Eichmann then gave the order for the murder of the remaining children on July 1, 1942. On July 2, 1942, all of the remaining 81 Lidice children were handed over to the Lodz Gestapo office, which in turn had them transported to the extermination camp at Chelmo some 70 kilometers away where they were gassed to death in Magirus gas trucks. It is generally believed that the children were killed on the day of their arrival. Out of the 105 Lidice children,
