Lodge 9, Snook Member Ollie Jakubik Achieves Grand Age of 96

SPJST congratulates  Sister  Ollie Jakubik, a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook,  who  will  celebrate  her  96th birthday on July 20, 2012.  As such, Sister Jakubik is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Ollie (Olga Emilie Shenkir) Jakubik was  born  in  Seaton,  Texas,  in  1916. She grew up on a farm in Seaton and learned about a loving family life and the value of hard work from her parents John M. and Emilie (Lesikar) Shenkir. Ollie and her brother John Shenkir are the  only  surviving  siblings.    Sister Martha Shenkir Armintrout and brothers  Edwin,  Adolph,  Rudolph,  and Jessie Shenkir are all deceased.  Their mother  Emilie  died  in  a  house  fire when Ollie was about 16 years old so Ollie had to help her father with her three  younger  siblings.    Their  father

John  passed  away in about 1941. Ollie  married Ernest  Rudolph Jakubik on November 24, 1938, at the home  of  Reverend F.J.  Kostorhyz  in Temple,  Texas. Ernest  was  a farmer/rancher and an SPJST sales representative.    Ollie was  a  mother  and homemaker.    She also worked at various jobs including the  grocery  store bakery  and  the greatest length of time as store clerk and kitchen helper at Snook ISD from which she retired in 1989.  Ollie and

Ernest were blessed with  four  children: Carlson (wife Judy Fuchs)  of  New Braunfels,  Lyndon (wife Maude Bothe) of  Snook,  Elaine (husband  James Muzny)  of Deanville, and Bernice  (husband Thomas  Junek)  of Snook;  11  grandchildren  and spouses;  and  12 great-grandchildren.  Ernest passed away in 1989. The  knowledge that  she  learned  on  the  family  farm helped  Ollie  in  her  life  as  a mother/homemaker raising four chil-

dren  on  a  farm  working  with  Ernest taking care of animals and working in the fields.  “I remember milking cows by  hand  and  making  homemade cheese, and caring for the household needs,” she says.  “Our children also had to help out on the farm; it was hard work, but it brings wonderful memories  of  family  togetherness  that  you don’t  see  too  much  of  today.”  The memories  of  togetherness  extend  to visiting friends and family on Sunday afternoon and enjoying svacina of poppyseed  and  cottage  cheese  kolaches and doughnuts with coffee and tea.   An  SPJST  member  for  78  years, Ollie’s first SPJST life insurance certificate  was  purchased  by  her  father. “And, after I married Ernest, he made sure  I  had  another,”    Ollie  remarks.

The 30-Second Quiz

Don’t  bother  getting  a  pen  and paper . . . just read . . . if you can’t answer them, just keep going.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.

4. Name 10 people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.  5. Name the last five Academy Award winners for Best Actor and Actress.

How  did  you  do?  The  point  is, none of us remembers the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They’re  the  best  in  their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.  Now here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1.  Name  three  teachers  who  aided your journey through school.

2.  Name  three  friends  who  helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special. 5.  Think  of  five  people  you  enjoy spending time with.

Easier?  The lesson?  The people who make a difference in your life aren't the ones with the most credentials,  the  most  money,  or  the  most

awards. They’re the ones who care.  —Author Unknown

Scholarship recipient conveys gratitude

Dear SPJST, I am writing to thank you for your generous $1,000 SPJST Ernie Wentrcek Scholarship. I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected as a recipient! I  will  be  attending  Texas  A&M University in the fall and will be seeking  a  bachelor  of  science  degree  in mathematics. Thanks to your generosity,  I  am  now  one  step  closer  to achieving this goal and becoming the first member of my immediate family to graduate from college. By  awarding  me  with  the  SPJST Ernie Wentrcek Scholarship, you have helped  lighten  my  financial  burden which allows me to focus more on the most  important  aspect  of  school— learning.  Your  graciousness  has  inspired  me  to  help  others  by  giving back  to  the  community.  I  hope  that one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals, just as you have helped me. Sincerely, Caleb Peters Lodge 179, Warrenton —SPJST—

Scholarship recipient expresses thanks

Dear Mr. Vanicek, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for awarding me an SPJST scholarship. I have always tried to put my best foot forward in my education, and following high school, I have continued to do just that. Thank you for helping me in my goal to attain a degree in aerospace engineering. I have always been interested in space, and I feel  I  can  make  a  difference  within this  field. Thank  you  for  helping  to lessen the burden on me as well as my parents to pay for my college education. They have always been a major part of my life and I greatly appreciate your efforts to help me help them. I plan  to  continue  to  do  my  best  at Texas A&M, and to strive to be the best I can be, not only in academics, but as an overall person. Thank you again for your help; I cannot express how grateful I am. Sincerely, Matthew Matous Lodge 25, Ennis —SPJST—

Lodge 15, Buckholts member proud of grandsons

It’s a lazy Fourth of July afternoon, a good time to remember friends and family. I have already told you how proud I am of my grandsons, but bear with me when I tell you again. I have three grandsons and all three are SPJST members and all three are now  lawyers.  They  are  John  Paul Vogel, a partner in a law firm in Fort Worth;  Thomas  Weatherford,  who works  for  a  law  firm  in  Oklahoma City,  Oklahoma;  and  now  Stephen Vogel,  who  just  graduated  in  May from St. Mary School of Law in San Antonio.  He  has  already  moved  to Dallas where he will practice cyberlaw. When  Stephen  was  in  Highland Park High School, Dallas, he chose to not  be  your  run-of-the-mill  student, but chose to take courses for two summers  at  Cambridge  University  in Cambridge,  England.  During  the weekends,  he  spent  time  visiting points of interest there such as Stonehenge which he did twice. Then, while studying  at American  University  in Washington, D.C., he spent a semester at  Charles  University  in  Prague, Czech Republic. After  graduating  from  American University, he practiced doing graphic designs  for  websites  in  Austin.  He soon  tired  of  that  and  entered  law school instead. It remains to be seen how successful  he  will  be  since  he  sure  has  the background for it. Now, to switch to another subject me. I am often asked how I’m doing, and all I can say is I’m as well as I can expect at my age. I’m like everyone else, we all want to go to heaven, but none of us want to die.  That brings to mind the three people who were asked how they wanted to do their final exit.  The first person said he wanted to be sick only a short while or better still, none at all. The second person said he wanted to be sick a longtime, but the third person said he wanted to be sick a long, long time and then get well. I must be like the latter for I’ve been sick all my life. You name it, and I’ve had it, but I’ve always managed to get well, and on that note, I leave you. Fraternally yours, Hilda Burtis —SPJST—

Districts Two, Four Camp July 26 to 29 at Cooper Farm

Dear Districts Two and Four Campers, We will survive another great year at  Cooper  Farm!    Be  ready  to  “survive” the challenges that will be set for your group. Districts  Two  and  Four  members will close out the 2012 SPJST youth camping year with our camp beginning on Thursday, July 26 at 11 a.m. We look forward to another great year together.  There  is  much  in  store  to “survive”  this  year,  and  you  won’t want to miss out. Please arrive no earlier  than  10:45  a.m.  Parents,  leave your camper and their belongings at the pavilion on the right as you enter the  camp  grounds.  This  will  be  the registration area. All medicines are to be left with Camp Nurses Becky and Ginger. Camping grounds will be off limits until we all go as a group.

Very Important! All campers need to wear their pool swimsuits under their clothes to camp. Prior to going to the cabins, a required swim test will be given to all campers. Also, keep your towel out.  This year, all  girls’  swimsuits  must  be  a  onepiece or a tank-kini.  You will be asked to wear a tee-shirt over your swimsuit if this rule is not followed. The above ruling was agreed upon by the District Two leaders and assistants at our annual District Two training  class.  Each  camper—boys  and girls—needs to bring two swimsuits, one for the pool and the other for the lake and blob. Girls, you may want to bring an extra pair of shorts to wear if you plan on blobbing. The blob is fantastic. The Leaders-in-Training (LITs) loved it. Here are the plans:

11 a.m. •  Registration at the pavilion. All medications,  over-the-counter  included,  must  be  turned  in  to  Nurse Becky/Ginger. Medication must be in the  original  bottle  with  only  the amount of medication needed for the camping period. Medication in bags cannot be accepted. •  Campers will be called to the pool for a mandatory swim test. •  Checking of all bags. •  Parents must take home all cell phones, sim cards, and any electronic devices which include iPods and MP3 players. This is for campers and LITs. If a camper has any of the above, par-

ents will receive a phone call. Please do not bring any expensive clothing. SPJST will not be responsible for any lost  or  damaged  items. All  cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone. No food or drinks are allowed in the cabins. Things to Bring r 3 towels and 3 washcloths

r Twin sheet set and light cover, pillow r Toiletries: soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. r 3 changes of underclothes

r 2 swimsuits—1 for the pool and 1 for the pond (For younger campers, please make a note which is to be for the  pond/pool.  The  chaperone  will make sure they are kept separate. We want to be sure to keep the pool clean and clear.) r Beach towel

r 3 changes of clothes

r 2  pair  tennis  shoes  or  closed-toe shoes.    All  campers  and  LITs  must wear these at all times.  Flip-flops are to be worn only to the pool. r Sunscreen

r Flashlight

r Bag for dirty clothes

A suggestion made which chaperones really enjoyed last year for the younger campers—Place one day of clothing in a marked plastic bag. This helps  in  getting  ready  in  the  early morning. Try to mark all clothing and belongings to be sure it comes home. Here  are  some  activities  that  are planned: Survivor challenges, swimming, high/low ropes course, boating, tubing  at  the  lake,  blobbing  at  the pond, paddleboats, kayaking, fishing (camp  will  have  the  gear),  BB guns/rifle range/archery, horseshoes, games by the LITs, dancing, karaoke, scavenger hunt, hayride, and so much more. The only other thing I can think of to bring is a lot of energy and a great attitude for a lot of fun. One thing to hope for is enough time to do all the activities which are planned. We  promise  2012  SPJST  Camp will be the best!

If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call or email. Again, thank you for allowing us to spend quality time with your youth. Every SPJST youth is special in his or her own way, and many memories are made  each  year  at  camp.  And,  this year will be no exception. A big thank you to all the chaperones who are taking time away from home  and  work  to  make  sure  our campers have a safe and a fun experience.  We can’t wait to see you on at camp on July 26!  Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor Beverly Teplicek District Four Youth Counselor Lynette Talasek Donna Vanecek District Two Assistant DYCs —SPJST—
