SPJST Camp Fun Youth club members from across the state are reporting fun and
great camp experiences this summer at district camps being held at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm. The first two camp pictures came in recently from chaperone John Vrla and son Jonathan of Lodge 130, Dallas who attended District Three camp.
They shared a photo of “Mama Bessie” at camp and stated they were all having a great time. DYC Bessie Petr is serving her 60th year as a leader in the SPJST Youth Program this year.
District Three camp also celebrated the Vestnik’s 100th birthday and SPJST’s 115th birthday in 2012. Thanks, District Three, for recognizing these important milestones! More camp photos will be featured in the SPJST Youth Spectacular to be published in the fall.

Wish y’all were here! Everyone needs to come see Praha — it’s beautiful! We’ve been at the Sokol Slet - 150 years of Sokol in CZ! Very exciting and moving!” Sounds like they had a wonderful trip. Utility bill payment scam
A new identity theft scam that is sweeping the country claims that Americans can get federal financial assistance to help cover the cost of their utility bills. Using in-person solicitations, social media, flyers, phone calls and text messages, scammers are contacting customers and claiming that a new federal program established by the Obama Administration is providing free utility bill payment credits or applying payments on customers’ behalf. To benefit from the purported program, utility customers are told they must provide their Social Security and bank routing numbers. Victims who provide their sensitive personal information are given a so-called “Federal Reserve bank routing number” to pay their utility bills. Customers are led to believe that their utility bill will be paid if they use this routing number and insert their Social Security number as the bank account number. In reality, there is no such program, no federal money and no payments ever applied to the customers’ accounts. Customers who use the fraudulent bank routing number are still responsible for their utility bills and must make payments on their own. To avoid falling for this scam, Texas utility customers should consider three tips:
• Never provide Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or bank account information to anyone who requests it during an unsolicited phone call or in-home visit.
• If someone calls claiming to represent the local utility company and demands immediate payment or personal information, call recipients should hang up the phone and call the customer service number on their utility bill. Texans should never give in to high pressure calls seeking personal information.
• Texans should never allow anyone into their homes to check electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless an appointment has been scheduled or a utility problem has been reported. Anytime a utility employee arrives at a residence, the occupant should require that the employee produce proper identification. —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy
The members of Lodge Karel Jonaš, No. 28, East Bernard, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of LEONA MATILDA PUSTKA VINCIK, age 95, who died Saturday, April 28, 2012. Visitation was Monday evening, April 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Chapel at Davis Greenlawn Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was held Tuesday, May 1 at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg. Leona Vincik Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Leona Matilda Pustka Vincik was born in Schulenburg, Texas, on September 28, 1916. Her parents were Rudolph Pustka and Matilda Hluchan Pustka. She was the second of eight children - five boys and three girls Theodore, Rudy, Dan, George, Johnnie, Leona, Geraldine, and Joyce. She grew up the oldest because Theodore had died in infancy. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard for 73 years. She would have been 96 on September 28. Mom’s father was the public weigher in Schulenburg at the time of her birth so she was not born on a farm, but after moving to Yoakum and then Shiner, she did grow up on the farm. That might explain why she loved gardening so much. She went to school through the ninth grade, until she was needed to help her parents with the farm work and raising/rearing her younger siblings. She was an excellent student and loved school particularly St. Ludmila’s Academy which, at the time, was a boarding school for high school
girls in Shiner. She loved the Sisters (Nuns) that taught at the Academy and seriously considered becoming one of them. She often mentioned how disappointed she was to have to leave before finishing. Later in life, she also took business courses and completed secretarial training. She grew up working hard, but also enjoyed other activities - reading, visiting neighbors and friends, quilting, playing dominoes, and going to local dances where she met Dad (Joe Frank Vincik). They dated for two years and were married on October 8, 1935. They left Shiner, moving first to Beasly where their first child Margie was born on August 8, 1938. In 1939, they moved to Jackson County where she helped Dad farm over 500 acres - corn, milo, and primarily cotton. They had several sharecroppers helping with such a large effort. While there, she and dad made several lifelong friendships through their local church community. Although they hated to leave Jackson County, Mom was pregnant with Betty and the country was on the verge of war. Dad expected to serve, and so they moved back to Fort Bend County so that Mom could be near her parents. Betty was born on December 30,1942. Because Dad farmed on such a large scale, he was considered more important for the war effort to continue raising crops. He also had two small children and another coming soon. L.J. was born February 3, 1946. During the war, both Mom and Dad served their country with “Homeland Air Surveillance.” They took turns with others in the community watching the skies with binoculars for any signs of enemy aircraft. In 1949, the Vincik family of five moved to Rosenberg, where Dad worked as a tractor mechanic and Mom was busy raising her young children. On October 4, 1950, Ronnie was born completing the family with two girls and two boys, all approximately four years apart having been born in the years 1938, 1942, 1946, and 1950. During most of the 1950s, Mom worked full-time as a homemaker and part-time as a seamstress and saleslady. She worked in a shoe store, a five-and-dime store, a dry goods store, and also sold Avon products all while raising four children. And, of course, when Dad started farming again in 1959, she was always helping him. Throughout most of her life, she sewed her own clothes as well as the of the rest of the family as we were growing up. She was a good-looking
woman with pretty blue eyes. She was always impeccably dressed with coordinated clothes and jewelry that were appropriate for the occasion. By example, she and dad certainly taught their children a healthy work ethic and a faith based way of life, but also showed them that there was a time for play. Particularly in the winter months, after the harvest was over, they enjoyed recreation, dancing, church and social activities, and, of course, playing dominoes. Although Dad was the domino “pro” in the family, Mom was quite good as well. We are so glad that she was still playing dominoes just two days before she passed away. Throughout her life, Mom maintained her strong faith and participated in church activities. She also insisted that her children grow up understanding the importance of living in a Christian home. She firmly believed that a family that prayed together stayed together. With Dad’s backing, she was definitely the family leader when it came to our faith. She sent us to the old Catholic school on 8th Street, and we prayed the rosary as a family at home very often. Mom saw to it that we attended Mass every Sunday, all Holy Days, and every other “optional” observance like Stations of the Cross, and blessing of the throats on St. Blaise Day, marching on Christ the King Sunday, as well as fasting and abstinence times. She was active in the Catholic Daughters and KJZT, having served as an officer in both organizations. She also served in the Altar Society and participated in many religious study groups. At the church bazaars, you could always find Mom working in the kitchen areas, and she and Dad donated many bales of cotton to the bazaar auctions. Mom was also famous for her home-baked kolaches and pastries that she donated to the bazaars and to our family reunions. No one made better kolaches than Mom. After you tasted hers, any others, though quite good and highly touted, just didn’t quite measure up. After Dad retired in 1976 because of arthritis, he and Mom enjoyed working at home making improvements and gardening - continuing to use their green thumbs. She liked to travel around the state with Dad and their close friends, most of whom have preceded her in death. She also enjoyed dancing as long as she could. In recent years, as her age progressed and restricted her ability to travel, she still insisted on attending every family reunion. She looked for-

ward to the reunions so much that her passing just the day before this year’s reunion was a real shock to us. We know that she would have preferred to live just a little longer but that she was ready to accept God’s will. In recent years, she could always be heard ending a prayer asking God to grant us a happy death. We should all be so lucky to end in our sleep at a ripe old age, and we certainly know that it was no coincidence that God granted her request. Mom was preceded in death by her parents Rudolf and Matilda; brothers Theodore, Rudy, Dan, and George; son Ronnie; grandson Brian; son-inlaw Frank David. She still has three original family survivors - sisters Geraldine and Joyce; and brother Johnnie. Mom’s legacy includes four children and their spouses; 13 grandchildren and their spouses; 23 great-grandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren. Mom passed away very peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning and received the last rights by Father William Bartniski on April 28 at Cambridge Assisted Living in Rosenberg. And she is now waiting for us to join her in eternal glory with the Lord. She was a kind, loving, and caring wife and mother and will be dearly missed. But she taught us well, and we can rejoice knowing that she had a long and happy life. As we often heard her say at other funerals, hers is behind her - ours is still to come. And we all know that she worked all her life for the reward in heaven that she most certainly deserves and is enjoying now. We love you, Mother. May you rest in peace. Wonderful Mother
God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old; He made her smile of the sunshine, And He molded her heart of pure gold; In her eyes He placed bright shining stars, In her cheeks fair roses you see; God made a wonderful mother, And He gave that dear mother to me. District Three Campers Stargaze at ENC
At District Three Camp, we really enjoyed getting to stargaze at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm in Waldeck, Texas. The Colorado Valley Dark Sky Explorers from La Grange brought out three large telescopes and an awesome green laser to reveal some beautiful sights in the Cooper Farm night sky. We got a close up look at Saturn, learned about Scorpius and Orion, how to stop light pollution, saw a star that had exploded centuries ago, and even saw craters on the moon! Stargazing is something us city people really don’t get to do, so when
we were given the chance, we were amazed at what we saw. The next day, several of the campers made thank you cards to send to the gentlemen who shared their time with us. After they received the package of cards from us, they sent us a thank you - for our thank you’s! Stargazing was just one of the fun things we got to do in our four days at camp. “survive” this year, and you won’t want to miss out. Please arrive no earlier than 10:45 a.m. Parents, leave your camper and their belongings at the pavilion on the right as you enter the camp grounds. This will be the registration area. All medicines are to be left with Camp Nurses Becky and Ginger. Camping grounds will be off limits until we all go as a group.
Very Important! All campers need to wear their pool swimsuits under their clothes to camp. Prior to going to the cabins, a required swim test will be given to all campers. Also, keep your towel out. This year, all girls’ swimsuits must be a onepiece or a tank-kini. You will be asked to wear a tee-shirt over your swimsuit if this rule is not followed. The above ruling was agreed upon by the District Two leaders and assistants at our annual District Two training class. Each camper—boys and girls—needs to bring two swimsuits, one for the pool and the other for the lake and blob. Girls, you may want to bring an extra pair of shorts to wear if you plan on blobbing. The blob is fantastic. The Leaders-in-Training (LITs) loved it. Here are the plans:
11 a.m. • Registration at the pavilion. All medications, over-the-counter included, must be turned in to Nurse Becky/Ginger. Medication must be in the original bottle with only the amount of medication needed for the camping period. Medication in bags cannot be accepted. • Campers will be called to the pool for a mandatory swim test. • Checking of all bags. • Parents must take home all cell phones, sim cards, and any electronic devices which include iPods and MP3 players. This is for campers and LITs. If a camper has any of the above, parents will receive a phone call. Please do not bring any expensive clothing. SPJST will not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. All cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone. No food or drinks are allowed in the cabins.
Things to Bring r 3 towels and 3 washcloths r Twin sheet set and light cover, pillow r Toiletries: soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. r 3 changes of underclothes
r 2 swimsuits—1 for the pool and 1 for the pond (For younger campers, please make a note which is to be for the pond/pool. The chaperone will make sure they are kept separate. We want to be sure to keep the pool clean and clear.)
r Beach towel r 3 changes of clothes r 2 pair tennis shoes or closed-toe shoes. All campers and LITs must wear these at all times. Flip-flops are to be worn only to the pool. r Sunscreen r Flashlight r Bag for dirty clothes
A suggestion made which chaperones really enjoyed last year for the younger campers—Place one day of clothing in a marked plastic bag. This helps in getting ready in the early morning. Try to mark all clothing and belongings to be sure it comes home. Here are some activities that are planned: Survivor challenges, swimming, high/low ropes course, boating, tubing at the lake, blobbing at the pond, paddleboats, kayaking, fishing (camp will have the gear), BB guns/rifle range/archery, horseshoes, games by the LITs, dancing, karaoke, scavenger hunt, hayride, and so much more. The only other thing I can think of to bring is a lot of energy and a great attitude for a lot of fun. One thing to hope for is enough time to do all the activities which are planned. We promise 2012 SPJST Camp will be the best! If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call or email. Again, thank you for allowing us to spend quality time with your youth. Every SPJST youth is special in his or her own way, and many memories are made each year at camp. And, this year will be no exception. A big thank you to all the chaperones who are taking time away from home and work to make sure our campers have a safe and a fun experience. We can’t wait to see you on at camp on July 26! Pořádek Thoughts for Today
Zvykni si ukládati své věci na jisté místo, abys, když jich potrebuješ, snadno je mohl nalézti. Tím uspořís sobě a jiným mnohé mrzutosti, uchráníš se mnohé škody, přijdeš všude v pravý čas a vyhneš se mnohe výčitce, ano i trestu ze strany rodičů a učitelů svých. Zanechej všech marných hádek. • Letters to Bibbie •
Editor’s Note: This article is one of a series of “Letters to Bibbie,” written by Ivo Marek to his distant relative, Vickie (Bibbie) Cooper of Granger, Texas. Ivo and his parents live in Chocen, Czech Republic. Ivo is an engineer by profession and an accomplished weaver and textile artist. In addition, his hobbies are gardening, cooking, and fine-tuning his English.
Dear Bibbie, Not long ago, my parents and I were on a trip to a memorial park with a beautiful rose glade (Růžového paloučku) not far from our domicile. It was a nice spring, sunny day. The gate was open, and we were their unique visitors. Roses had a rush of first green leaves after winter; forgetme-nots and violas bloomed in the grass; and birds chirped in the top of trees. The roses are so-called “gallic roses.” It is not possible to replant
