Triplets express scholarship thanks
Dear SPJST, We would like to thank you for the $1,000 scholarships that each of us received. We were awarded the Leadership Grant, Freshman Scholarship, and the Otto Hanus Scholarship. By being triplets, paying for college is a struggle. This money will help us to further our education and make our college experience more enjoyable. We are able to attend Tarrant County Community College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and University of Texas at Arlington. Thank you again for your generosity, and we ask that you keep us in your prayers as we enter this new chapter of our lives. Thank you, Katie, Gena, and Tommy Weeks Lodge 183, Arlington —SPJST—
Texas Czech Genealogy Society conveys gratitude
Thank you. These two words although powerful seem inadequate to express the gratitude and appreciation to SPJST for the one-time contribution to the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) in the amount of $10,000 in recognition for our assistance with the Věstník Archiving Project. We know that without the support of each of you this recognition could not have happened. We are particularly thankful to the following people: Brian Vanicek, Supreme Lodge President; the SPJST Board of Directors; Melanie Zavodny, Věstník Editor/Director of Communication; the members of the Finance and Publication Committees; and last, but not least to the Delegates of the 31st SPJST Convention who approved the recommendation. It means a lot to us to be recognized for doing something we deeply believe in. As you are aware, TCGS has long been an active supporter of SPJST and its activities. Upon our founding, our first project was to become involved with the library, and as Friends of the SPJST Library, we began to inventory the vast holdings which it contains. When TCGS became aware of the
Věstník Archiving Project, the importance was quickly recognized and, when approached, TCGS readily accepted the project. Under the guidance of Melanie, the plan to scan all the Věstníks and place them online is nearing a reality. Final editing is currently underway. It is anticipated that the Věstníks will soon be online and available for research. This is an accomplishment to be proud, of and TCGS is proud to have been a part of it. Again, on behalf of all the TCGS volunteers involved in making this project a reality, we thank you for the recognition. Your contribution will allow TCGS to continue in its efforts to accomplish its goal of being a genealogical society founded by Czech genealogists dedicated to helping everyone with their Czech genealogy. Sincerely, Charlene Hurta, President Texas Czech Genealogical Society —SPJST—
Looking Back 70 Years
Hello, My name is Randy Coufal of Lodge 47, Seaton. I was looking through some old stuff that belonged to my grandparents, and I found it to be very interesting. I wasn’t sure if you were looking for stuff like this to publish or not, but I still want to share it with others. It is about Czech immigrants coming to Texas and becoming Americans and fighting to defend the United States of America. I enjoy reading through the Věstník and seeing articles of history from Czechs who helped build our communities.
From May 1942 Mr. and Mrs. John Coufal of Seaton, Texas, were honored at the “I’m An American” Program. They were recognized for giving six of their sons to the U.S. Army and was said to hold or share the national record in this respect. Another son was also ready to enlist. John Coufal and his wife Olga Ludmila (Marek) were both descendants of Czechoslovakia immigrants who came to settle in Texas -parents arriving at Galveston, Texas, and settling in Industry, Texas. John and Olga later moved to Bell County. Attached are copies of the actual newspaper clippings in 1942.
The six Coufals listed during World War II are:
William H. Coufal - private first class with the 680th quartermaster company at the Salt Lake City air base;
John L. Coufal - private in anti-tank company of 358th infantry of 90th division at Camp Barkeley, Texas; Julius A. Coufal - private first class, Battery B. 131st field artillery, 36th division, at Camp Blanding, Florida;
Henry J. Coufal - private, Company B, 27th signal corps battalion, Camp Bowie, Texas;
Frank E. Coufal - private, Company L, 358th infantry, Camp Barkeley;
Louis J. Coufal - Company K, 126th infantry, New York City.
Two other brothers also served for our country after this recognition. They are: Joe Lee Coufal - served in the army
Alvin F. Coufal - PFC U.S. Army in the Korean War. ***

The program will be at 3 p.m. and will be for all Bell County, with a special invitation to the enlisted men on duty here to take part. and Mrs. Coufal will be the highlight of the event, emblematic as it is of the contributions of all parents to the armed services of their country and to the fight of the United Nations against the Axis. The six men, all enlisted men in the United States Army, are stationed in all parts of the United States. Some special memento of recognition will be presented Mr. and Mrs. Coufal at the program. Those who came to America from foreign lands and those who have recently became American citizens in age agreed that “the chosen people are those who live in America,” in an “I Am An American Day” program presented before a large crowd in the city auditorium Sunday afternoon. It was Mrs. Selig Hendler, of Lithuanian-Jewish extraction, one of the five nationalities represented on the program, who said that Americans are the chosen people. Mr. and Mrs. John Coufal of Seaton, who have given six of their sons to the U.S. army and who were said by Master of Ceremonies Mayor H.B. Mason to hold or share the national record in this respect, were honored on the program. Mrs. Coufal was presented a six-year service pin, and Mr. Coufal a pipe set. “We have six boys in the army and one more ready to go,” they said. —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle
Ennis Sewing Circle met on July 12, 2012. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, and I arrived at 9 a.m. to set up tables and chairs. We had to set up lots of tables and chairs this time as we had our elephant sale and show and tell. There were five full tables of sale items and two with show-and-tell. Everyone displayed their items. Thanks to all for having them priced. We had such nice, cute things. There was lots of material from Bessie Laznovsky and Clara Miller. Thanks to them both. You just couldn’t help but pick up things as everything was really nice, and it was such fun. At 11 a.m., President Dorothy announced the sale would begin. There were several items I had my eye on, but someone else got to them first. I still found lots of things — some toys for great-granddaughter Sarah who I keep two days a week. Thanks, everyone, for making our elephant sale a big success. I want to send a big thank you to Lydia Alholm and Frances Matthews from Fort Worth for the many items that they sent for the sale. It was so sweet of you both. Chances were being sold on the little quilt from the Czech Republic donated by Joe Kostak, several items donated from the Czech Republic by Libbie Vrla, and items donated by Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Prachyl, and Joyce Ehrenberger. We had 12 beautiful items. Thank you all. Georgia Holy and Dorothy Booth were in charge of the raffle tickets. Winners were Vickie Vlk, Irene Prachyl, Bertha Podhrasky, Geraldine Valek, Elene Eggers, Dorothy Prachyl, Joyce Ehrenberger, Margaret Martinek, and Lil Kosarek. Several members won twice, but it was all on the up and up. President Dorothy led us in prayer. As we were not quilting, we let birthday celebrant Vickie Vlk be first in line for lunch. We had a delicious lunch — chicken and dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and just about anything else you could think of. Thank you, all, for the food, set up, and clean up. President Dorothy called the meeting to order. We had 24 members and seven guests — Alene Eggers, Barbara Phipps, DeLany Laznovsky, Margie Hamilton, Jerry Zmolek, Joe Ehrenberger, and Julius Podhrasky. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for Ruth Ehrenberger and Bill Slovak. Secretary Margaret read the minutes of our last meeting and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report for Dorothy Bobalek who was not present. Both

were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora read the birthday celebrants for July — Dorothy Bobalek, Joan Strunc, Dorothy Valek, and Victoria Vlk. We wish those not present a happy birthday. We sang to Victoria Vlk. Eleanora thanked Libbie Vrla and Irene Prachyl for donating cards for our Circle’s use. Eleanora also announced Vickie Kohn’s new address. Vickie is now residing at Sterling House in DeSota. Bertha Podhrasky announced that the Heritage Day Festival in the African American Museum at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas will be held on October 7. Everyone is invited. They always need help and will be selling ads for their program book. Our Circle will purchase an ad as always. It was good to see Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek. Jerry talked about the beautiful Veterans’ Memorial that has been erected in Ennis which he worked on a lot. It is really nice. If you are ever in Ennis, look it up and stop to see it. As Margaret Martinek had to leave early, we let Ginny Svehlak show her show-and-tell item as it was something for Margaret. Some time back, Margaret and family were cleaning out the home of her mother-in-law Annie Martinek. Annie was past 100 years old when she passed away. There was this little old doll dressed in lace that had turned gray, and the doll was falling apart. Margaret just couldn’t throw it away. She asked Ginny if she could do something with it. Remember, Ginny dressed these little dolls for our church bazaar. She ripped the lace off the doll, washed it, it didn’t fall apart, bought a new doll, and dressed it. I wish you could have seen it. It turned out so very pretty. Before I forget, last month, I wrote that Georgia Holy attended the wed-
ding of her granddaughter in Fredericksburg. Well, it wasn’t her granddaughter. It was Georgia’s sister’s granddaughter. Sorry, I can’t get anything right anymore. We are so happy two of our new guests joined our Circle. Alene Eggers was introduced by Irene Prachyl and Dorothy Kudrna introduced Barbara Phipps. I hope you both enjoy attending as much as we all do. Bertha Podhrasky brought a most delicious poppyseed cake for lunch and even brought the recipe for it. Thanks, Bertha. Pat Fowler was absent. She and husband Van were celebrating their 33rd wedding anniversary and were going out together for lunch. How nice. We wish you many more anniversaries. Georgia Wensowitch called that morning if I would pick up her rolls for our lunch. She had planned to come,
but wasn’t feeling good that morning. Get better soon. Libbie Vrla reported that Olga Pechak had planned to attend our meeting to see our Christmas quilt. She donated the top and bottom for it. She wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t make it. We wish her a speedy recovery. In August, we will quilt for Victoria Vlk. I was at her house one day, and she showed me the first quilt she had quilted. It was made from the shirts of her husband Stanley — a butterfly pattern. The ways she finished it off, it was beautiful. President Dorothy thanked all for coming, helping in any way, bringing and buying items, the food, set up and clean up, and Jerry for taking out the trash. Dorothy Kudrna made a motion that we adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Libbie Vrla.
Show-and-Tell One of our new members Mary Zabojnik had many beautiful items for show-and-tell. I hope I can get it all correct. When Mary was 20 years old and first married, her husband was in the service stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. She met a lady friend there who taught her how to crochet. Now that Mary is retired, she is crocheting all the time. She has made two afghans and two vests. She said the vests are really warm to wear in the winter. She is now crocheting for her grandchildren and future great-grandchildren. She has crocheted 12 blankets, and I don’t know how many booties, caps, and mittens. They are in her cedar chest. Mary said she probably won’t be here at that time, but her children and grandchildren could tell her great-grandchildren about the items their great-grandmother made for them. The

colors were all soft and different. They were really pretty. Mary had pictures to show of her grandchildren. They are all beautiful and smart. I can see why she is so proud of them. First, she has McKenzie and Treavor Inman - they belong to Deanna and Larry Inman. They live in Coppell. McKenzie is at San Marcus college studying to be a second grade teacher, and this summer is teaching swimming lessons. Treavor is a senior at Coppell High School, playing select baseball and is really good. He hopes to earn a baseball scholarship to college. Lindsay and Tyler Zabojnik belong to Mark and Donna Zabojnik who also live in Coppell. Lindsay graduated from Coppell High School and received a full two-year softball scholarship to Navarro College. I didn’t ask Mary if she went to any of her games. I know how exciting that can be. This fall, Lindsay will attend North Texas State in Denton and will major in art. She will leave softball behind. Tyler is playing select baseball this summer and will be a senior at Coppell this fall. Logan and Morgan Zabojnik belong to Glenn and Julie Zabojnik. They started school at St. John Catholic School in Ennis. When it closed, they transferred to St. Joseph Catholic School in Waxahachie. Logan is in sixth grade, and Morgan is in the second grade. has a lot to do with that. Marie Vrla showed a wedding gift she received when she married in 1955 and worked at AT&T telephone. It was an unusual porcelain doll with small candy dish on top of her head and napkin holder all around that made a full skirt. I have never seen anything like that before; a beautiful, pink crystal basket that the late Mrs. Pavelka gave her one time she and her mother were visiting; a rare, antique burgundy bottle that was 80 years old. It was shaped like an important person, maybe Washington or Lincoln, somebody like that. Marie said it was never opened and dried up many years ago. Joyce Ehrenberger had an old, white, top bed sheet with crocheting around it. It was given to Joe Ehrenberger by Mrs. Zavorka who passed away in 1953. Joyce didn’t know what to do with it. Someone suggested she write a story about it and donate it to the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. Dorothy Prachyl had a darling, little wooden box that her grandmother got from her friend as a remembrance before leaving Czechoslovakia and coming to America in 1894. This is really old. I figured it out - at least 118 years or older. Bertha Podhrasky had two candle holders she made in PTA when her boys were in school. It was made out of safety pins and beads. Georgia Holy showed a beautiful crystal pitcher that her mother-in-law (Mrs. Novy then) got from her boyfriend Mr. Holy when she graduated from high school. It was really pretty. She also had two homemade bonnets like we all used to wear when working in the field. One was large and one was small. We all remember those days. Ann Clagett showed her beautiful

sunflower quilt she made for herself from material given to her by Bessie Laznovsky. We were glad Bessie was there to see it. Irene Prachyl had an unusual chicken pitcher that came from Italy. Back in the 1700s, two families were feuding all the time and back then all raised chickens. One night, one family decided to go over and hurt or do something bad to the other family. When they got there, the chickens got spooked and woke up the family, and they were saved from any harm. This family decided to have something made to commemorate this occasion being saved from harm. The pitcher is a sign of good luck and protection. It is given as a wedding gift, and wine is served from it. She had a wire gadget and asked if anyone knew what it was. None of us knew. It was a toast holder from England; a turkey bowl from Turkey; a darling little tray given to Irene by Dee Cass. Remember, Dee owned the Fashion Dress Shop many years ago. Irene used to help Dee with her banking needs. They used it on their dresser for bobby pins. One year, Irene’s daughter Sheryl when in school was supposed to bring something 100 years old - I guess for show- and-tell. Sheryl went to her Grandma Prachyl for something that old. She gave her this plate and said it was from Prussia. Prussia is not a country any more. When taking the plate back to Grandma Prachyl, she told Sheryl to keep it. Libbie Vrla brought a big, beautiful wedding picture of our grandparents Frank and Marie Hejny Patril. Grandpaw was the only boy in the family, but had five sisters. Grandmaw’s brother Frank Hejny used to live in that little house on Sokol property and was caretaker. Grandmaw’s sister Annie Hejny was married to Mr. Vytopil, a Sokol member and shoe repair man, in Ennis. She was his first wife before passing. Libbie also showed a big shopping bag bought at a store like Wal-Mart or KMart in the Czech Republic on one of her trips. She told the story how she asked the sales clerk in Czech what she wanted. It was funny. The bag had animals on it; and a big group picture of the Sokol Fort Worth 100th anniversary. This was truly a wonderful, fun day. Thank you, all, for everything, the sale items you brought and bought, the show-and-tell items, and the wonderful stories. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. We were glad to have our two new members — Barbara and Alene. We will meet August 9, will quilt, have lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. Stay cool and see you. Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth
The morning was off to a slow start, and it looked as if everybody might decide to stay home. However, as it got closer to our meeting start time, the room filled with 51 members and guests. We were blessed to have Gloria Farek and Lorinda Manasco back after recuperating from their health difficulties. And, as usual Gloria made the cutest favors for us. Using candy, she made an American flag for everyone. I just wish I had taken a picture of it before I ate mine; it was so patriotic. Our thanks went out to her for her thoughtfulness and for the unusual treats she always comes up with. In addition, Willie Mae Becan had all of her children and a great-grandchild attending. They pretty well filled up one table, and she was so happy to have them with her. Wow! We ended up with a good-size group after all. President Marlene Bass began the meeting by leading the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Vice President Theretta Praslicka then read “Let Me Be a Blessing” and offered a
prayer. President Marlene welcomed our guests for the day and had them to stand to be recognized. We are always so pleased to have guests and family members join in the fun. Secretary Joan read the minutes, which were approved. She also read a thank you note from Gloria Farek and a thank you letter for the $100 donation given to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. Treasurer Pauline Morbitzer gave a financial update on expenses incurred this past month. Mary Ann Gibson, Lisa Juran, and Bobby Shropshire (whom I volunteered) were busy, busy in the kitchen. Our thanks to each of them for the nice selection of meats along with their hard work. Lunch was very good and bountiful. Members with birthdays in July were recognized and serenaded. There were 10 in all, and we missed singing to those who were not there. Those honored were Kathy Ormsbee, Jennifer Miller, Theretta Praslicka, and Sandy Celusiniak. Again, we asked each of them to share something personal. Kathy Ormsbee stated that she retired from the old Winn Dixie grocery chain and has been a member for
Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station Members Tour TCGS Veterans’ Wall
During their recent visit to the SPJST Home Office, members of Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station took time to tour the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Czech Veterans’ Wall of Honor. Lodge members, from left, front, are Secretary-Treasurer Charles Munday, Jim Wentrcek, Jaime Wentrcek, Larry Wentrcek, and First Vice President Albert Scasta. Accompanying lodge members on their tour were back, from left, State Youth Director Frank Horak and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. The Wall of Honor pays tribute to all Czech men and women who have served, or are currently serving in the US military, the military of the Czech Republic or the former Czech Lands. If you have a Czech family member or friend who wore the uniform of his country, and his photo has not yet been submitted for the Wall, please send the photo to John Gantt, 3807 Kelli Lane, Bryan, Texas 77802 or email to john.gantt@gmail.com
about 10 years. Sandy Celusiniak is a friend of Janet Basham and started coming with her. Jennifer Miller is Willie Mae Becan’s daughter and only gets to come in the summertime. She is a teacher, and she usually brings Mattie, Willie Mae’s great-granddaughter, with her. Mattie is so well behaved, and we enjoy having that little one around. Then, there was Theretta Praslicka. She retired in 2000 from Bell, and she and Frank have been dancing at the hall for 60 years. She shared a cute story about how much they loved to dance beginning in their pre-marriage years. Sundays were for church. However, Sunday evenings after church, she and Frank would sneak off to the hall to dance the rest of the night away. She said that her mother would have died had she known what she was doing. That’s a great story if ever we heard one. Joyce Tesar announced dance times and schedule changes for the hall. There were quite a few changes, and I’ll not list them for fear of getting something wrong. For more details, please check Lodge Activities in the back of the Vestnik or you may call the hall for details. Our ladies of the Circle are so generous, and we very much appreciate their big hearts. Prizes donated and to be won were a set of placemats, pedicure set, roll of nickels, couple of candles, bag, bottle of wine, hand therapy set, a $5 bill, bath set, tatted picture from Czechoslovakia, and a ceramic box. Congratulations to those who were lucky enough to win a goodie. Vice President Theretta had a couple of cute stories to share, after which the meeting concluded with the blessing for lunch. Bingo followed, and I won something—finally! Until next month, Joan Shropshire, Secretary —SPJST—

Our July meeting was a swim party held at Betty’s house. The pool was filled with members and guests. We took a break for our meeting and distributed certificates and awards. We also discussed camp, the peanut butter and jelly summer charity project, upcoming State YAD as well as plans for an outing to the Mesquite Rodeo. Camp was a really big hit this year. I understand everyone had a wonderful time even though the rain scared off the hay ride. I heard that everyone enjoyed the zip line, archery, and especially fun at the lake. I hope to be able to go with y’all next year. I’ve been putting my photo album together and wanted to share these photos (see page 17) with you. At this year’s National Polka Festival, my son Jake and his wife Jessica won the annual dance contest so they were crowned king and queen. It was so much fun to be a part of their weekend going from one hall to another. At the KC, it was a treat to run into 1966 SPJST State Queen Frances Jo Kudrna Bardwell. Her parents, Joe and Frances Kudrna, were very active with the lodge for many years. We enjoyed reminiscing with Frances Jo and her family. State YAD is just around the corner, and I look forward to seeing everyone again. Our lodge is representing District Three with a king and queen Queen Reagan Langer and King Dustin Motley. We are representing our district with first place talent Austen Holland and Reagan Langer as well as several first place arts and crafts along with the lodge poster. I am so proud of all of you. Lodge 88, Houston youth: camp was really fun!
Dear Members, We went to camp last week with Districts Six and Seven. I liked going to the lake and riding on the boat and floats, the canoes, and crafts the best. I liked seeing my Leader-in-Training friends from the other districts. Next year, I hope I can be in a group with Luke or Sarah. I can’t wait until next year. Camp was really fun! Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club: Summer Fun at District Two Swim Party
Lodge 87, Temple attended the District Two Swim Party held at Walker Pool in Temple. All the youth who attended had a blast. They each liked doing different things. Some enjoyed the diving board, and some enjoyed the water slide. A few brave ones attempted the water rock wall. All the adults enjoyed just chillin’ in the water.

Lodge 130, Dallas Back-to-school youth: awesome party ideas District Three camp Back-to-school season is on My name is Jonathan Vrla from Lodge 130, Dallas. I returned from District Three Summer Camp, and it was awesome. There were high ropes, a lake, snow cones, and awesome cabins. There were nice people and nice adults. Thank you, SPJST, for letting me go to camp. I had lots of fun. We celebrated the birthday of SPJST and the Věstník, and Mama Bessie’s 60th year leading the youth. Thank you, Mama Bessie. the horizon, and many students and parents are either loving or loathing the idea of starting a new school year. For some, a party to commemorate the new school year and the end of summer is customary. Hosting a fun event for the soon-to-be students is one way to make the most of vacation time. Go with a theme. Maybe the theme is rulers and text books, ABCs, or science, and it can run through the decorations used, the games played, the food served, and many other aspects of the event. Consider a science experiment inspired volcano cake that is oozing strawberry jam. Include some educational games. Some students experience educational backsliding during summer vacation. That is why many schools have summer reading lists that educators feel promote lesson reinforcement for the coming school year. With this in mind, plan activities around concepts children learned in school. Think about math problem relay races, art projects, reading a story and reenacting it in a play form, or science experiments using solar energy.
Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club Hosts Snow Cone Booth
Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club hosted a snow cone booth at “Meet You at the Square” in downtown Rowena on Saturday, July 7, 2012. Several members drove around in a golf cart and sold snow cones to cookoff participants.
Host a campout reading marathon. Encourage guests to bring sleeping bags and favorite books to a campout under the stars. Most of the time can be spent reading while breaks can be devoted to exercising, making campout snacks or telling campfire stories. Rent out a fun bus or truck. Since many students will be spending a good deal of time on a school bus once the new school year commences, tie into those jaunts to school by renting the services of a game bus or truck. Some vendors will park their vehicles in front of the house for an hour or more, allowing children to climb inside and enjoy themselves on play equipment or compete in video game competitions inside specialized gaming trucks.

Plan a group event at the beach. Spending time seaside can be educational and enjoyable at the same time. Enlist the help of a few chaperones and set up an area on the beach where kids can play and explore the wonders of nature around them. Pack picnictype snacks or ask attendees to bring items themselves. Plan a trip to the school. Afterward, meet at a pizzeria to enjoy some slices and soda. Host a classic pool party. Of course, some kids want to commemorate the end of summer vacation by enjoying the pool one last time. Have a classic pool party and barbecue in the yard for everyone to enjoy. —SPJST—

Příslovce - The Adverb
,
Adverbs express quantitative, qualitative, relational, or circumstantial determinations, such as notions of place, time, manner, cause, result, or purpose.
Some adverbs are used to modify the sentence as a whole and not any certain word, like: snad–perhaps; ovšem– of course.
Adverbs are simple, relative (“connective”) or interrogative. They are derived from other parts of speech – nouns, adjectives, pronouns, or verbs. Examples: dům–doma (at home), domů (home) důl–dole, dolů (downstairs) veselý (merry)–vesele (merrily) dlouhý–dlouho (for a long time) česky–český; anglický–anglicky kdo (who) kde (where) zde (here) všude (everywhere — place) kdy (when) tehdy (at that time) vždy (always) - time jak (how) tak (so) nějak (somehow)

A word about the suffixes –ejší and – eji (ěji):
The suffix –ejší a –ější are adjective endings: rychlejší, pravidelnější, zdravější.
For adjectives ending in –ký, –eký, – oký, these endings are dropped and –ší is added to the stem so that s and z become š and ž, so: široký–širší blízký–bližší
and the suffix čí is added in a small group of adjectives so: leh-ký – lehčí hezký – hezčí měkký – měkčí
